Botanical illustration.......2007-05-12
This is an in depth clear book about the process of botanical illustration. Well written and great pictures. Recommend highly!

One of the best resources.......2006-11-10
Not only is the author a super artist, rendering her illustrations with fine, exacting detail, but she's also creative in the way she frames the subject. She also provides excellent and extremely helpful, easy-to-do (inexpensive) instructions on setting up a studio/supplies, etc. I love it.
Great book!.......2001-08-29
I am very pleased with Botanical Illustration in Watercolor
by Eleanor B. Wunderlich. It is a beautifully illustrated book both in presentation and in demos. It combines both worlds of wc and botanical illustration in a clear and precise manor. I would highly recommend this book for both beginner and serious botanical illustrator and/or for a good reference book for your art library. It is a very pleasing book just to browse through.
Absolutely the BEST BOOK on botanical illustration.......2001-04-30
This is the best book on botanical illustration I have found. It is suitable for all levels including complete beginners like myself. Although some artistic talent is certainly an asset, closely following the instructions here will come as close as possible to teaching virtually anyone to paint. From drawing to painting, it offers everything you need to create your own beautiful botanical artwork.
The book starts out by helping you choose a subject with practical advice on fruits, vegetables, flowers, mushrooms, bulbs, roots, trees, ferns, vines and more. Then, creating a space to work in and selecting materials from brushes to paper is covered. I love the many excellent tips on mixing colors.
The next section focuses on the many aspects of drawing including setting up a still life, planning the picture and transferring your drawing to watercolor paper. There are detailed step-by-step instructions for drawing a huge variety of botanical subjects including orchids, tulips and foxgloves. I really liked how the author discusses the various shapes of flowers such as round, teacup and tubular and then shows you how to block them out.
The final section covers the painting process. Along with numerous step-by-step demonstrations on painting botanicals there are hints on correcting mistakes, protecting your paper and tips on painting white flowers. Creating the initial washes, adding shadows, shading, layering and highlighting are included as well. To finish your artwork the author gives advice on matting, framing, exhibiting and selling your artwork.
The finished illustrations throughout the book are so beautiful. Each one has information on the kind of paper they are painted on, size and title.
Best book on the subject and beautiful, too.......2001-03-23
Not only is this a comprehensive guide to painting botanical subjects, but the book is just gorgeous.
Drawings and paintings of wild flowers and fruits bring out their beauty in ways photographs cannot. So this book is a really good resource if you like to sketch and hike, or if you garden and want to make a beautiful record of what you see. This is also a great resource if you are getting into journal writing and want to put in pictures of plants and flowers (many people keep a garden record journal, for example.)
The instructions are very good, from how to draw and sketch plants to choices of color. There are good examples to copy to learn the technique. I don't think there is a better book on this subject, nor a more beautiful book.
This is a book to love and cherish.......1999-10-23
Since I started learning botanical illustrating I have seen many books on the subject but few have held me spellbound like this one. The intelligence, helpfulness and sensitivity of the instructions would make it a book worth having on their own, but the glorious illustrations will keep you referrring to the book again and again. Their complexity and detail will hold you enthralled.
Book Description
Siriol Sherlock’s techniques for capturing flowers and plants are beautifully simple—yet they yield remarkable results that earned her the 2005 Artists Choice Award. More than 150 stunning fine-art illustrations of both finished works and key stages of the painting appear throughout this exquisite guide, illuminating the instructions. All the various materials are covered, along with traditional and experimental techniques for painting wet-on-wet, capturing color and form, and adding finishing touches. Examine the details that go into depicting foliage and fruit, flowers in context, single stems, multistem arrangements, and even leaves and branches. The flowers bursting forth in beauty on the page range from tropical blossoms to a brilliant poppy.

Don't be deceived.......2007-05-11
This is a great book but it is the paperback version of ISBN 071348862X. The picture on the cover is different, but otherwise it is the same book.
I read a review which indicated this was a new book by Siriol Sherlock and was very disappointed.
A great reference for artists........2006-03-09
Very precise, beautiful colorations. A great addition to my artist's reference library.
Excellent introduction to the subject.......2005-12-17
This is a first class book. There are clear illustrations on various aspects of the art and several projects that can be followed. I would recommend this book to a non-beginner as I am sure that if you had no experience the techniques she uses would be a little daunting.
Book Description
"Elemental" is the perfect word to describe George Olson's watercolor drawings of the plants of the tallgrass prairie. Delicately precise yet filled with vigor and color, they present the prairie in its individual elements and--taken as a group that celebrates the hues and textures of tallgrass wildflowers and grasses--in its seasonal abundance. In The Elemental Prairie, the combination of George Olson's luminous drawings and John Madson's eloquent essay "The Running Country" encourages us to look at the prairie world with newly appreciative eyes. For some years Olson has focused almost exclusively on the grasses and wildflowers of the North American prairie, meticulously reproducing their elemental structures and colors while--proving once again that art can both imitate and enhance nature--emphasizing their magical loveliness. By painting certain species in their winter and summer "plumages," he reveals the plants' stark wintry framework as well as their more glorious warm-weather beauty. The Elemental Prairie presents sixty glowing images of tallgrass plants, from the familiar purple coneflower and black-eyed susan to the less-often-seen rattlesnake master and compass plant. Together Olson and Madson, two dedicated prairie restorationists, one using images and the other using words, create a living prairie in all its brilliance.

A beauty all its own.......2007-01-19
When we moved for my spouse's career from upstate New York to the edge of the prairie on the western side of Illinois, I cried all the way from the airport upon seeing what looked to be flat desolation. Over the five years we lived in Galesburg, Illinois, I came to learn and understand the prairie and to appreciate its exquisite beauty. George Olson's stunning watercolors and John Madson's essay transfer that beauty to the print medium. It a treasured book in our home, especially since our departure from the prairie, and one we have given as gifts to those friends who have also had to leave the prairie.

The most important legacy of the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II is the Mira calligraphiae monumenta, a manuscript comprised of illuminated pages of calligraphy. Around 1561 a master calligrapher wrote the text as proof of his preeminence among scribes. After his death, a master illustrator was employed to illuminate his writing, and the outcome is a rare combination of words and images in small-scale drawings--considered one of the wonders of Renaissance Europe. This book culls different plates from the collection that are each unique, consisting of lavishly executed text in Roman and Hebrew letters accompanied by realistic and detailed drawings of plants, animals, and insects.
Book Description
The court of Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II produced nothing more amazing than the Mira calligraphiae monumenta, a brilliant demonstration of two arts--calligraphy and miniature painting. The project began when Rudolf's predecessor, Ferdinand I, commissioned master calligrapher Georg Bocskay to
create a model book of calligraphy. A preeminent scribe, Bocskay assembled a vast selection of contemporary and historic scripts.
Years later, at Rudolf's behest, miniaturist Joris Hoefnagel filled the spaces on each manuscript page with insects, fruits, flowers, and other botanical images. The combination of word and illustration is rare and, on its tiny scale, constitutes one of the marvels of the Central European
Renaissance.
Nature Illuminated reproduces forty-one pages from the original codex. Those who love and collect beautiful books will be endlessly fascinated by Hoefnagel's imagery and invention. The accompanying commentary identifies and explains the details of Hoefnagel's exquisitely crafted
illuminations.

Thank you Emperor Rudolf II .......2007-01-15
Years ago, when I was primary school (1960)2nd class student our teacher made us a special note -book: Everybody wrote an alphabet and every friend painted them whith natural ornament. I remember that years. This book is illuminated us with conservative knowledge. It's a pattern for humans and for our child. Ewerything in the world can place in same frame. Thank you Emperor Rudolf II and AMAZON.
A teaser but great none the less........2006-02-23
I have never seen such an amazing compilation of manuscripts and calligraphic examples. I was blown away. The only problem is that the dang pages are so small!! It seems like some detail is lost. This is a big problem for anyone who wants to master some the writing techniques. The Mira calligraphea is the same dang size so no help there either. If anyone knows where I can find larger views please let me know!!!! vinson.gracia@gmail.com
Gorgeous artwork!.......2005-03-04
This is a great book for those who appreciate beauty in nature. I find that just paging through the gorgeous artwork of natural objects and flowing calligraphy is very soothing. The book is smaller than I expected but its content does not disappoint. Makes a wonderful gift for special friends. I bought my copy for myself but I might buy others in future as gifts for friends.
Medieval Butterflies, Sea Shells, Plants = #41 Manuscripts.......2002-05-29
If you want to see colorful manuscipts that show a varity of medieval insects, plants, flowers, fruit, sea shells, initials, designs, and even a few animals, then this is the book for you. There are 41 full color manuscripts to choose from. At the end of the book, are discriptions of each manuscript, listing the medieval name for each. Example: The identifications of specimens proceed from top to bottom and from left to right. Common names have been provided whenever possible. In the case of the insect identifications, British English common names have been used, since most of the specimens represented do not exist in the United States. Where a different American common name is known, it has been included following the British Name, seperated by a slash. The names of higher taxonomic groups (families and orders) have been printed in roman type, while genus and spicies names appear in italics.Folio 1 Rotunda script in "trace letters"Vinca minor L,: Common periwinkleMalus domestica Borkh,:Common appleLacerta(?):LizardFolio 5 Antiqua scriptMatthiola incana (L.) A beautiful little book.......2002-04-13
"Nature Illuminated" is wonderful collection of illuminated manuscripts from the Getty's extensive holdings. Perusing these pages shows that the chasm between (representative) art and science is really not so great.

During the Renaissance, the boundary between art and science was not as clearly drawn as it is in the information age. One of the key functions of science in da Vinci's day was to accurately and elegantly depict the denizens of the natural world, and nowhere did the scientist-artists shine more than in botanical studies. The Clutius Botanical Watercolors offers a glimpse into the world of 16th-century naturalists, who spent much time "botanizing." This particularly gorgeous collection of original (but unsigned) drawings and watercolors was owned by Theodorus Clutius, a Netherlands pharmacist, and they were used to instruct budding scientists and physicians at Leiden University.
These plant studies are exquisitely detailed and delicately colored, retaining both usefulness and beauty. Every needle on the pine bough is painstakingly rendered. Each pea leaf, tendril, and flower is accurate and dainty. Each plant in the pleasure garden, the kitchen garden, and the wild is drawn and tinted to perfection. This book is a joy to leaf through for botanists, artists, and fans of Renaissance naturalists. --Therese Littleton
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely Gorgeous!.......2006-06-06
This is a tall book about 12.5 inches (32 cm tall and 24 cm wide) and contains excellent quality presentations of the botanical prints of the collector Clutius [artist(s)unknown]. So you see on each white page an aged parchment that contains the botanical watercolor. The parchments are set on each page with about a one-inch surrounding border of the white background page. All the parchments are very old so their edges are a bit uneven here and there indicating their age and their true paper-making origin. No machine churned out perfect sheets back then. The watercolors themselves are absolutely exquisite and their skilled presentation by the author makes you feel like you are actually paging through the actual collection. She chose 142 watercolors from the collection of 1,800. The artist(s) may be unknown but their skill would have guaranteed them widespread fame today if they had autographed their works. I am a modest collector of botanical books and I just feel so peaceful and content paging through them. This is my favorite book. Even at Amazon's $45 price tag, which I did not pay, I consider this book worth it. Barely, but still worth it! And I am a real skinflint so I don't say this lightly! If you love botanical books, you will treasure this one.

Using the famous full-color paintings of Mary Vaux Walcott as illustrations, this tiny gem of a book depicts 400 wildflowers and plants from all over the country. Some were chosen for their beauty or rareness, others because they are old (and familiar) friends. Either way, Walcott's exquisite paintings capture the delicacy and diversity of America's flowering plants. Wildflowers of America also provides an index with distinguishing characteristics to aid in identification, making this the perfect pocket companion for hikes and nature walks.

LUSCIOUS BOOK.......2007-04-22
An absolute must for the naturalist and artist both. Comprehensive descriptions tell you everything germane about each of dozens of those "weeds" you think you know and will learn to love. The full color full page illustrations of every single plant are knockouts!
What a gorgeous book!.......2000-08-17
Having been totally enthralled by an exhibit of Anna Vojtech's paintings at an art gallery I visited back east, I was excited to learn that she had published this book of reproductions of her work. My husband is an amateur naturalist, and when I told him about the book he was eager to see it because of Ghillean Prance, a famous botanist and extremely interesting writer. So we ordered it.
This book is amazing! The reproductions are so beautiful and rich, and a few of the plants are portrayed in more than one season, so you can see the changes they go through as the seasons progress. The colors are perfect and you practically feel like you're sitting there in the woods with the artist while she paints a lily or trillium. The detail of the paintings (and even more so when you see them in person in a gallery!) is remarkable, intricate, highly skilled -- she's just a really gifted watercolor artist!
Ghillean Prance writes just the sort of text that makes these pictures feel so alive. He discusses some cultural or medicinal uses of the plants, or some folklore behind them, or something else really interesting that comes as a revelation. Dr. Prance is so knowledgable, he makes me want to become a naturalist.
Highly recommended for naturalists, gardeners, art enthusiasts, people interested in plant folklore, and anyone who just enjoys flowers.
Book Description
The distinguishing feature of this book of 12 flower subjects is that it illustrates in detail each stage of the painting process, from pencil drawing and shading through each successive watercolor coat to final touches.
