good for fans.......2006-06-10
I love Batman the Animated Series. When I heard of this book, I immeadietly bought it. You'll data on every character from the series and what episodes they first appeared in. Some of the pictures are photo shots from the series. Great for Batman fans.
batman guide.......2006-03-19
my three year old son loves this book he wants to know who all the characters are and he loves to tell them back to you. this book has been wonderful!!
Good for kids.......2004-07-13
I grew up watching this series, and fell in love with Batman because of it. The moment I saw a preview of the pages for Nightwing and Harley Quinn (my favorite characters) I rushed to order this. However, I was a bit disappointed. I'm used to the "Ultimate Guide to ---" Books and was expecting this book to be just as detailed. It is very thin, and not very specific. This book is great for people and kids who know very little about the series and want to get acquainted. For true fans, its not even necessary. Only major characters are covered. I would have been more impressed if a character like Rupert Thorne's accomplice Candace would have gotten a page. I don't see why not, she appeared in multiple episodes. However, in this book, Rupert himself only get a paragraph on the "Other Villians" page. An episode guide would have also been nice. The most you get here is a list of where each major character first appeared. I hope a more detailed book will appear in the future.

Ideas and inspiration for fans of manga and American-style comics
Christopher Hart is the top-selling cartoon and drawing author of all time
American comics once dominated the world. Now the balance of power is changing, as anime (Japanese animation) and manga (Japanese comics) have exploded into the mainstream of American culture. Drawing Cutting Edge Fusion is the first-ever tutorial that shows how to draw American-style comics with a manga influence. With this book, artists learn to assimilate Japanese aesthetics into new-look comics: how to turn supermuscular bodies leaner and more athletic; how to make facial features more angular and elegant; how to draw hair in up-to-the-minute spiked or long styles. This dynamic fusion of cultures brings together exciting storytelling ande sophisticated design. Now artists can capture the best of East and West with Drawing Cutting Edge Fusion.

A fun book for fans of both.......2007-08-24
For starters, this is written by Christopher Hart, so it's probably one of your best options if you are interested in the subject of the book...
This book is great for fans of both manga and graphic novels; it goes into how the two genres differ (fusion vs graphic novel) and also the different styles in the fusion style (cartoon vs comic). Also gives huge amounts of character concepts and ideas; a fantastic buy for those who like both styles (not recommended for those who are fans of one and hate the other)
christopher hart does it again!.......2007-08-24
Like all of Christopher Hart's "cutting edge" comic and other cartooning instruction books, "Cutting Edge Fusion" is clear, concise, informative, and just plain enjoyable..i personally own several of his books, and every one of them has helped me fine-tune my artistic abilities and keep up with the changing styles of modern cartoons and comic styles...this book, like all his others, are well worth every penny!
Good book.......2006-10-27
This is the better of the Hart books: good solid information into a genre of comics/animation full of mis-conceptions.
I personally think Fusion style marries the best of these two styles. Anyone wanted to create a comic would be wise to adopt THIS style and make it your own.
As with most of the Chris Hart books the sections on who how construct panels and tell stories w/ pictures is EXTREME helpful.
Excellent way to learn about the fusion drawingstyle .........2006-03-23
Pro- looks cool, great illustrations, clearly written, basically has the stuff I was looking for. Excellent addition to my other books, most of which are from Christopher Hart, and this one is as good as he usually makes them. Excellent way to learn about the fusion drawingstyle .
Con- I want more, what else can i say?
Cheers
Good Art Book, Few Caveats.......2006-03-05
Chris Hart's books are hit or miss, but this is one of his better ones. If you're interested in drawing "Fusion Style" comics, a style pioneered by Rob Liefeld than this book is for you. Like most Hart books, this book is filled by illustrations from various artists with Hart providing an occasional illustration. While I like his books, I find Hart's style is poor. Thankfully, illustrations drawn by the author are kept to a minimum.
The Good: Some good fusion style faces. From all angles this time. Thanks! More turnarounds including 'generic ones.' Excellent
The bad: Why oh why did hart have to draw the muscle charts? This illustration is very poor, and one of the worst in the book. Also, whoever drew the female figure on page 29, did not draw it in fusion style. Pages 22-33 were really bad, and just did not do the book justice. Since these were key proportion illos I was disappointed.
Overall, if drawing "Fusion" is your bag, you can't go wrong with adding this to your collection.

AMAZING DRAWING BOOK.......2007-04-17
Sorry for the caps but this book is a gem. combined with fantasy cartooning youll be drawing anatomonically correct characters. My drawing skills went up drastically and it shows you basic anatomony so you know how the skull forms making for realistic heads and bodies. If you are looking for cartoony realistic characters this book is for you.
Great book for beginning to intermediate artists.......2007-01-09
This is a terrific book for the beginning artist or the intermediate artist who wants more techniques. It offers simple routes to successful cartooning by outlining a few different character types, expressions, and actions. It's fun to read, fun to look at, and easy to follow. It also invites you back into the book for return studies when working on a project, so it never gets old.
A treasure for the beginner or more experienced........2006-10-24
I recently changed my at style from manga-inspired to more "traditional" techniques. I first picked up Mr.Caldwell's Fantasy!Cartooning (another recommended purchase) and the techniques were so helpful and informative, I immediately looked up his other books.
Don't let the title fool you- this book offers more than just straight action techniques. There are a lot of basic methods that really boost your style, such as using body structure to portray personality, etc.
I don't think this is a book for total beginners or someone who doesn't know at least a little bit about anatomy and structure, but the language of the book is easy to follow and very informative.
Even more experienced artists can learn something from Mr. Caldwell. I've been cartooning (off and on) for over 20 years and I found myself experiencing a second renaissance after reading this great book. After a year-long personal slump I feel like an artist again and it's thanks to Mr. Caldwell.
great book - great style.......2005-07-17
Ive always loved the semi-cartoony style of artists like Ryan Dunlavey and Ben Caldwell. I always wanted to learn how to draw this way. when i saw this book on amazon, i was amazed at how lucky I was to find it! once i got It, i started using it right away. it was a great book and i learned ssssooooo much from it that i wouldve otherwise never known. this book improved the quality of my drawings so much more than i couldve imagined and i bet it can to the same to yours.
I bought two!.......2005-07-07
Yep. It's that good.
Ben's style is infectious.
This would be in my top 5 how-to-draw books that I keep close by on my drawing desk.
I respect the advice passed on in these pages. His breakdown instruction on heads, figures, faces, women etc is second to none!
He is a master of his art. I would definitely buy another one as a gift for a budding cartoonist or even an established cartoonist.
This is one of those books you wish you had when you were first learning to draw cartoons.
I highly recommend it.

Superman in Disguise.......2007-09-12
My 5 year old son loves Superman and loves this book. He loves to peruse the pages, picking out his favorite characters and sections. This is a fun book for younger kids and not nearly as dark as the DC comic Ultimate Guide.
great for fans.......2006-06-10
Fans of the animated series will like this book. It's has info data on every character from the series, good artwork and even photo shots from the series. Being a fan of Superman, other fans may like this book.
Superman Guide --great intro for series........2003-06-23
Being a fan of the Superman animated series, I was thrilled to see some a new book come out on this well-written show.
Regrettably, after a measly 52 episodes, WB decided not to produce any more episodes, and just last year DC also decided not to produce any more comics written in the Superman--Animated Series style.
This text is much more kid friendly than Mr. McCloud's other DC Books on the regular DC DK books (Batman, having a few strong illustrations that might be a bit much for the younger crowd).
I was rather surprised at the smaller size of the text, but loved the well-chosen illustrations and text, culled from both the series and short-lived comic book.
An excellent guide to the series, which hopefully can get some more kids and viewers into the show which will be replayed on the Cartoon Network.
I hope Mr. McCloud can continue to do books on Batman Beyond and in a few years, the Justice League (when that particular series has accumulated more episodes).
Still, I wish a few more pages could have included an episode guide to the series, and to the comic book done in that style
Heartily recommend.
Sincerely,
JThree

Book Description
Both professional and student illustrators of action and fantasy art can take the guesswork out of rendering extreme anatomy and dynamic action poses with help from this valuable reference source. It presents more than 600 detailed color photos of live models, and represents a wide range of physiques, postures, and poses that can be incorporated in fantasy scenarios. The book's accompanying CD-ROM contains all of the book's posed images, allowing illustrators to swipe them directly and paste them into their own computer art projects. The book also instructs on rendering realistic effects to the illustrated textures of flesh, hair, clothing, and metal objects, as well as advice on adding highlights, backlights, and shadows. Here is a valuable reference source that belongs in every illustrator's personal library. All images are copyright free.
Customer Reviews:
Great for figure reference .......2007-09-11
I really enjoyed this book. I actually downloaded the images onto my computer and use them as poses to draw from in the slide show format. Coupled with "The Natural Way to draw" this book really helps me out and gives me a "safe" place to learn away from the limelight, which is important to me.
This images are good and very well done and give you some really good costume studies (as well as drapery studies) on top of basic anatomy and muscle drawing.
Overall, a very good piece of work.
my review.......2007-07-04
This book is a welcome addition to any cartoonist or illustrator's photo reference file as it includes physical and ethnical types different from the usual stereotypical idealized caucasians. On the other hand, it isn't as systematic, varied or consistent in its poses and points-of-view as the Illustrator's Reference Manuals or the Posefile series of books.
Cliche Central.......2007-01-23
The 'Fantasy' of the title is, unfortunately, the heavily-stereotyped 'thud and blunder' style fantasy of Conan the Barbarian, Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser and other such hackneyed, outdated types.
The figures shown are Barbarian warrior, Warrior woman, Evil Sorceress, Fairy, etc. And they are all quite absurd.
The book also includes little tidbits of information about costume and weapons, like this pearl of wisdom: "The nock is the part of the bow that the arrow rests on." Uh, yeah?
Combine this with poses titled "Bring forth tidings", "Arise, my liege" and the like, you soon realise this isn't a particularly well-done piece of work.
As for the CD, the images are huge - making them very difficult to work with.
This book isn't completely useless, but there are surely better things to spend your money on.
Great for beginner fantasy artists!!.......2007-01-09
If you are new to the fantasy art genre or are looking for a great quick reference for figure drawing, this is the book. It gives a diverse selection of different body types, sizes and looks, as well as a good smattering of accesories, close-ups and clothing...
Not extreme or dynamic, but still has some good parts.......2007-01-03
Unfortunately, this book did not live up to my expectations. Overall, it was uninspiring to me, especially in creating my own characters. As a reference photo book, it fails because the poses are not extreme and dynamic as promised. It also seems to try to reach beyond its scope with a section on painting and many comments on characters beyond anatomy and costume.
Pros:
- "Anatomical studies" show each character type in only shorts (or shorts and sports bra for women) so you know what the body looks like in some poses.
- Summary of character wardrobe
- Poses of characters in wardrobe may help in drawing clothing -- depicting folds, how certain material hangs, etc.
- As another review mentioned, an overweight man ("cleric" and "norseman" types) and a small person ("warrior dwarf" type) are shown here, and both are helpful.
- Captions in the book often direct you to details (how material is bunching up a certain way, how a shoulder strap hangs off the body in a certain pose) or notes about anatomy ("legs need to be placed apart because they will have to bend to compensate for the weight of the ax")
- Section of close-up facial expressions (male and female)
- Although brief, there are also some photos of hand detail, including props like rings & bracelets, and accessory details -- boots, belts, jewelry
- Spiral binding allows the book to lay flat (although when you're drawing, you'll probably print images from the CD instead)
Cons:
- Uninteresting poses. This is the sale-killer for me. Although the book says the photos depict "extreme anatomy and dynamic action poses" I found the poses to be too plain. There was no "extreme" posing where the body is in extreme angles -- lunging, jumping, twisting. Instead, someone is standing still with their arms raised and feet spread, but there is no action happening. You can tell because there is a lack of tense muscles.
- The back of the book has a section on painting characters that seems out of place. This is a photo reference book, not a painting book. Unless you already know about painting with acrylics, this section is useless.
- Some captions have irrelevant comments. In a caption of a photo showing a happy "warrior prince" face, it notes, "All characters should be able to feel elation and happiness."
Summary: although a few poses are good, don't expect most of them to be "extreme" or "dynamic." Note that this is not an instruction book on learning anatomy, and you should have at least a basic understanding of human anatomy to use this book well.
Books that I would recommend for beginning artists:
- Human Anatomy Made Amazingly Easy by Christopher Hart
- Drawing the Living Figure by Joseph Sheppard
- Dynamic Figure Drawing by Burne Hogarth (great for flow of action)
- Perspective! For Comic Book Artists by David Chelsea
- Dynamic Wrinkles and Drapery: Solutions for Drawing the Clothed Figure by Burne Hogarth
- Action Anatomy: For Gamers, Animators, and Digital Artists by Takashi Iijima
Book Description

ANIME & GAME CHARACTERS, Vol. 3 shows how to bring to life common and everyday mannerisms, ranging from impulsive expressions, cuteness, and to looks of surprise. Learning to draw these will enable you to double the charm of your characters.
Customer Reviews:
A must have.......2006-11-28
I must say, I really enjoyed this book. I love how the book displays the body in different views and in different positions. This is especially useful when you can't draw a character from a certain sitting position. For those who are a little concerned about nudity, don't worry. There is some nudity, but it's mostly the guys. I really wouldn't call it nudity though, since they do not draw the nipples on the females at all. It's merely a silhouette of the naked form. Other than that, this book is a must have. It really shows daily activities (like the book suggests)it also has some activities like karaoke. I wouldn't call that a daily activity, but that pose can come in handy if one wishes to draw a karaoke scene in their manga.
Wow..................................2005-11-24
This book is so good it's scary it teaches stuff from poses to move ment step by step so you can get it really easyly. At first I was terrible at drawing movement so every piture I drew was a charater standing but then I got this book at the libray. And now I know how to draw people jumping running and much more. Very helpful and useful it should have ten stars. Cool as it gets the person who made this book worked for Studio Ghibli!

A book worth your money.......2004-11-23
Ozawa does a wonderful job again! He inititally starts the book on drawing your character using perspective giving a numerous amount of pointers and examples. Then giving basic action poses (walking, running, sitting, standing, laying down, etc) and going into variations of those actions by using multiple examples of characters. A typical example page consists of a stick figure in a particular pose, a block figure, and the actual finished character in the same pose. Front and back, or other view of the pose is common and he even gives pointers and tips of details to look out for.
Besides teaching you how to draw real believable characters, this book is an excellent edition that you may later use as a reference book for poses. Like his earlier books, Ozawa covers nudity tastefully and this book can be used by young artists without fear. A book well worth the money, imo.
Another excellent book.......2004-02-27
The third book in the series picks up right after the last with perspective. The first chapter is dedicated to it, and provides many great tips. It then moves on to basic character movements such as walking, running, sitting, sleeping, and much more. From there it even goes into greater detail by showing you variations of the previously mentioned movements, and a lot of them. After all, no two people are made the same. This is a great book for any artist period who wants to learn the different poses of the body.
teaches how to draw movement.......2004-01-27
I started off drawing a book by Burne Hogarth that taught me how to draw human anatomy. It was a great book and I felt as if I could draw anything after learning how to draw the muscles and the body in general. What I learned was that I couldn't whatsoever. I would try to draw someone walking using my own logic on what a person walking should look like and I would fail miserably. This book is great for anyone who has trouble drawing a person sitting, running or doing any lifelike pose realisticly. This is the only book that I know of at the moment that teaches how to draw people that are WEARING clothes and actually doing something that people do in every day life.
Book Description
An enemy is creeping up on the hero, when the hero suddenly does a half-spin and sends him flying with a back roundhouse kick! Then the hero jumps up and on the way down delivers a punch to the enemy. Action scenes are the highpoints of a story. This book selects action and movements often used in popular combat games and explains these motions to allow you to master drawing them quickly starting out by tracing and, later, to draw your own original character performing.
Customer Reviews:
Good book........2007-01-19
What I like about this book is that it has many angles for a fight style. It offers hints on small details that would make your characters look alive. I recommend that you go checking out this book first at your local library before you buy it because you might not like it. This book only shows fight moves not actual battles between two characters. It is a book for intermediate artist who has mastered some drawing skills. This book is a good reference book because if you drew a character and it look "weird" there are hints in this book that will help you fix the "weirdness."
An excellent book for the *animation* of battle scenes.......2006-02-06
If you view this book as just a drawing book, then I can understand some of the negative reviews.
For example, one of the reviewers complained that the author spent too much time on the drawings for a side kick. And that reviewer was absolutely right.
The reason is: this is really an ANIMATION book. And all those "redundant" drawings that the author is spending time on are the Key Frames and Passing Frames that are ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL for creating great animations.
For example, take Macromedia Flash, draw in those key and passing frames. Then draw in the inbetweens, and you have FANTASTIC animated action sequences. I know, because I've done it!
Viewed as an animation book, this is THE DEFINITVE BOOK for martial-arts, anime animation.
Buy the Animator's Survival Kit by Richard Williams, along with this book and you will have a complete course on anime animation.
For the Future Animator or Game Artist.......2004-11-23
If you've gotten Ozawa's other books, then you already know how detailed his books get! This volume is no different and goes a step further by showing you actions in progress such as showing you each movement of a person walking. Then he shows you how to do the same action but at different angles and foreshortening. There's so much info in here that it'll take you awhile to digest all the information in it. It's stacked full of drawings and side notes!
There are quite a lot of action moves in this book, specifically hand-to-hand combat. No instructions on drawing weapons even though the cover shows them.
Quite unlike Martials Arts & Combat Sports and Illustrating Battles editions, this book prep you to think in 3 dimensions and animation-type movement. If you're set on making animations and video games in the future, this book is the best way to learn spatial relations and seeing your characters more than just one or two-dimensionally.
If you're into making manga, getting this book won't hurt at all but you're probably better off getting the Illustrating Battles or Martials Arts & Combat Sports book initially.
Like his other editions, this book is young-reader friendly and covers nudity well using block, wire, and wooden model figures.
Ugh!.......2004-08-26
When I first got this book it looked like it would help me with martial arts and japanese moves. Boy was I wrong. The very fact that this is japanese animation would make the reader ASSUME this was japanese Battling. Instead, I got HUGE Bozos, throwing punches and absolutely no martial arts. In this book, Tadashi was so busy showing the angles of just one kick, that he has absolutely NO variety WHATSOEVER! I'm serious, just one move takes him up to four pages to get his point across. Do yourself a favor and skip Volume 4 MASTERING BATTLE AND ACTION MOVES in Tadashi's work.
not as good as id hoped.......2004-05-16
after getting the first three volumes of this series i admit to being a bit over-expectant of this volume. not to mention i am also guilty of judging it by its cover. as usual it starts off with some useful information about movement or anything it could be covering in this book, which i like very much and has very useful tips. however towards the part of the book where it begins to have illustrations of kicks and punches and stuff, i was utterly disapointed. the cover suggests that the book contains something on sword fighting or knife-fighting, or graceful battles, but was completly off. the battles in this book are like street fights, something i was totally not interested in. All it has is overly-masculine people throwing elbow jabs and drop kicks. there is an even distribution of girls and boys in this book, but none of them seem to be at all related to the kind of battles on the cover or back page. i suggest before buying this book you understand it will NOT give that many battle moves. it never even touches upon knives or swords. and pretty much the only action moves are people going from a walk to a run.

Great for Ideas.......2007-08-24
This book is GREAT for getting ideas; the anatomy parts are not anything particularly spectacular, but it's great for getting ideas and concepts going, as well as what to DO with these ideas. I recommend it for those who like fantasy and/or the 'Magical Girl' genre

An Outstanding book that teach you how to draw cartons in detail. I bought it for an 8 years old girl, she likes it too. (but, it seems a little bit hard for her) However, I borrowed the book and draw once and find out it's a great book. I highly recommend for teenagers who love Japanes Cartoon.

Another amazing book from Christopher Hart!.......2007-05-23
I am a big fan of Christopher Hart and his work. His books are the best manga tutorial books I have come across.
This one is no exception. The drawing are gorgeous, the instruction is easy to understand for beginners and is still useful for advanced manga artists who want to learn new techniques.
It has everything from cute chibis to the transformation of a regular girl to a magical girl. (step by step instruction)
My favorite is the cute little mascots which are also transformed into magical mascots.
This is worth every penny!

A book you should own as an aspiring comic book artist.......2002-12-20
I didn't buy this book here because I was lucky to find it here in the Philippines. I found this book almost complete in its goal to teach its readers to become comic book artists. The book could have been 100% complete if it had a few pages on muscle structure (male and female), more pointers on drawing hands, foreshortening the human body and coloring. Despite these, I still rate it 5 stars.
One particular chapter that I believe stood out was the chapter on Clothing and Drapery. Learn the principles Tom outlined here and you will be able to draw clothing and drapery from memory.
It's not the only book you should buy if you want to draw comics but it definitely is a must-own book. I also bought Stan Lee and John Buscema's "How to Draw Comics - The Marvel Way" from the same bookstore. I haven't finished reading it yet because I'm already practicing breakdowns (posing your character using basic shapes prior to filling them in with muscles and covering them with clothes or costumes) as Tom suggested we do for at least a week or better months or a year (what a perfectionist, ey?).
It has EVERYTHING!.......2002-08-07
I've read this book many times and it has the most info I've seen in a book on how to create comics, by far. It even goes so far to include instructions on drawing clothing! Tom Alvarez gives a two page lesson on the compostion of a comic page, explains different techniques of the inking job, and even gives dimensions of a typical comic book pencilling page with instructions to size it down! There are also many tips he throws in at the end of every chapter to help you get going in every aspect. Like watching some dramatic movies and studying angles to re-drawing an existing comic book. Extremely detailed! No regrets! A must-have for artists!
THIS BOOK ROCKED!.......1999-12-23
This book showed me everything I needed to know about drawing fantasy and adventure comics. I enjoyed the books informative value and its comments by other artists. I now know how to draw cartoon characters with skill and prescision. Thank you, Amazon!
