Creativity is one of the great mysteries of life. Everyone may possess it to some degree, but why do some people seem completely in touch with their creative powers while others struggle to connect with it at all? How do you unlock your creative potential--or maximize it, if you're already utilizing some level of it? This inspirational book--meant primarily for painters but full of sage advice for other types of artists and crafters, too--teaches how to release your muse by exploring the basics of the language of art and by applying the Zen principles of blending body, mind, and spirit and of following an intuitive rather than purely logical approach. The author's own lyrical, vividly colored paintings (as well as works by other artists) complement her highly readable discussions of self-awareness, instinct, mandalas, harmony, and mindfulness, as both important general concepts and as they pertain to landscape, still life, and figural art. In short, she teaches you how to know yourself as a creator, and to recognize that "creative vision really is your natural birthright" and that "art has something to offer everyone ... as a means of self-knowledge." --Amy Handy

Blow Away!!!!.......2007-05-22
I have recently started doing watercolor paintings since I retired and was lent this book by my teacher. I had to buy it as soon as I opened it. The paintings are absolutely splendid. I think that they are what watercolors should be. And the text sets a mind frame that will enhance any budding artist down the path to great work.
A great way to Watercolor painting Ideas.......2006-08-21
A must to read to start your own ideas on Watercolor painting, using the Zen method.
Strong art - weaker philosophy.......2004-09-17
I like Carbonetti's art and this book is full of it. For that reason it is worth buying. She also succeeds in showing the mental aspects of creative art. However, her seeing of Zen is not so successful. She also wrote books like "The Tao of Watercolor" and "The Yoga of Drawing". I would prefer if she simply explained her own position without packaging it into so many commercialy attractive titles.
elegantdesign.co.nz Book Review.......2004-02-29
The book was very logical yet had many creative aspects. I would recommend it for a mid-range painter.
this book is wonderful.......1999-02-17
for so long art has been has jeanne put it, "left Brained" very logical, in an attempt to teach art so everyone can understand it. but what these artists, teachers, are forgetting is that creativty is a mystery. art is about feelings. even if the piece is very abstract, its still trying to in a sense "say" something. this book gave me a voice on how to explain myself as an artist to teachers who i have had who lean toward a logical kind of art that has shape but no feeling, and does not allow for differeces in style. i love this book, i plan to go into art education and this well definitely be a reference

Book Description
W. Anthony Sheppard considers a wide-ranging constellation of important musical works in this fascinating exploration of ritualized performance in twentieth-century music. Revealing Masks uncovers the range of political, didactic, and aesthetic intents that inspired the creators of modernist music theater. Sheppard is especially interested in the use of the "exotic" in techniques of masking and stylization, identifying Japanese Noh, medieval Christian drama, and ancient Greek theater as the most prominent exotic models for the creation of "total theater."
Drawing on an extraordinarily diverse--and in some instances, little-known--range of music theater pieces, Sheppard cites the work of Igor Stravinsky, Benjamin Britten, Arthur Honegger, Peter Maxwell Davies, Harry Partch, and Leonard Bernstein, as well as Andrew Lloyd Webber and Madonna. Artists in literature, theater, and dance--such as William Butler Yeats, Paul Claudel, Bertolt Brecht, Isadora Duncan, Ida Rubenstein, and Edward Gordon Craig--also play a significant role in this study.
Sheppard poses challenging questions that will interest readers beyond those in the field of music scholarship. For example, what is the effect on the audience and the performers of depersonalizing ritual elements? Does borrowing from foreign cultures inevitably amount to a kind of predatory appropriation? Revealing Masks shows that compositional concerns and cultural themes manifested in music theater are central to the history of twentieth-century Euro-American music, drama, and dance.

A New Perspective.......2002-01-22
Dr. Mindell has provided an interesting and inclusive model for leadership that takes into account many levels of individual and group psychology. This book goes far beyond, or should I say far deeper, than most of the "pop" nonsense on leadership.

Not worth the paper it's written on.......2007-07-14
i'm really getting tired of all the books being published about Selena's death. Even more than 10 years on, people are still cashing in on it and writing about it and it seems to me to be the same story rehashed time and time again.
Don't get me wrong, i love Selena, i think she was an amazing artist, but this book does not do justice to her memory. The author claims that she knows a 'secret' about Selena, that Selena kept a diary and only the author knows what it contains.
She spends the whole book making reference to this while not actually telling us what that 'secret' is. Now, it's been a long time since i've read this 'book' (and i have no desire to again), but i remember the author seemed to sympathise with Yolanda. What the hell is that about? If it wasn't for Yolanda's crazy, selfish act Selena would still be alive, instead of being written about in a cringingly bad account of her life in which the author seems more sympathetic towards the murderer than the victim.
I'm embaressed to say I read this...........2007-07-05
This book is awful...what is this woman even talking about she's like a rambling idiot...oh and there's no secret.
Complete bull.......2006-08-19
When I read this book I thought it was really misleading. It was a plot to make everyone feel sorry for Yolanda. The truth is there is no secret. Yolanda is a lier. No one should feel sorry for her . If she wasn't so busy busselying money from everybodys business she would have know that she would get confronted and eventually fired. She had before inbussled money and it was settled quietly. Ms. Arrass did this book completly wrong and I must say I am disappointed to know that she beleives everything Yolanda says. Selena didn't have an affair with anyone. She wasn't going to hurt herself in anyway because she cares about her family, friends, and fans. She was in love with her husband so why in the world would she cheat on him. She never had a plastic surgeon so that was an evident lie anyway. Yolanda had absoulte no excuse for shooting selena. Yolanda got upset because she knew she had no escape from the truth. There was no way she could get out of being in front of Selena and she tried everything to get out of the situation at that moment and the only way she could do that was to kill or injure selena at that moment. SO THE SECRET IS THERE IS NO SECRET.
Self-Serving Journalism at it's Peak.......2006-02-27
I avoided buying this book years ago simply because I'd already read another review that said the "secret" was not disclosed. Now, I felt prepared to handle that and what I read was a "look at how great my show and I are!" book. She's apparently more able to be manipulated than she'd like to admit, because for some reason she believes an awful lot of what Saldivar told her; things that common sense don't dictate to be true. She states in her book that her show "Primer Impacto" has been criticized for "smacking of sensationalism" and now I know why - and I've never seen the show! "Between the lines" she insinuates that Selena was having an affair with her plastic surgeon and was about to move to Mexico and that that's why Yolanda shot her - to prevent her from causing harm to herself. PUHLEEZ!!!! I couldn't rate this book with negative stars, but if I could've that's what this book would've gotten from me.
Selena Story.......2005-08-02
It was good to know things about Selena Tragic Death Story I wasn't aware.

SURPRISE, SURPRISE.......2007-05-10
I was surprised at this book in Marilyn's own words. This interview was only a few weeks before her death. The pictures were amazing and beautiful. She did not seem at all depressed and was looking forward to the future. Makes you wonder if she was murdered. Surely seems that way after I read the book and looked at those pictures. It almost seems to say "see I want to live" and little did she know that her life was in danger! Poor Marilyn. I hope wherever she is, she knows that some people believe that she did not kill herself. And I hope she is at peace.
Always love Miss. Monroe.......2007-03-25
This book is unique in that it comes from George Barris's last days spent with her. I love the photos because they are candid not posed. This bok also includes the last photo ever taken of her. I'm on my way to own almost every Marilyn book and Im am pleased with this one.
Norma Jean the woman you thought you knew........2006-08-26
I have to say that it is just amazing how after 44 years Marilyn Monroe is still considerd one of the most beautiful women to ever live. After seeing the photographs of Marilyn Monroe taken by Mr. Barris in this book I am not suprised that people are still captivated with the beauty of Marilyn Monroe. The pictures of Marilyn in this book are amazing and beautiful. Marilyn shows her true character in the most natural looking pictures I have ever seen of her. Each picture tells a story and shows you the woman Marilyn really was. Marilyn truely was a naturally beautiful woman and it shows in this book. This great book also lets you read and learn about the real person Marilyn Monroe was in her own words. Marilyn tells her life story in this book, taking you through her young years as Norma Jean to her Hollywood life as Marilyn Monroe. When you are reading this book it is very interesting to hear Marilyn talk about her life in her own words. Marilyn takes you along her life journey through the pages in this book. The only sad thing is when you are reading this book you wish Marilyn's life story would continue past the inevitable days of Marilyn's death on August 4-5,1962. I alreadly knew Marilyn was going to die before reading but it really made me sad because after reading this book it makes you feel like you actually knew Marilyn personally. That just goes to show how well written this book is. I have to say Mr. Barris you have done a great job writing this excellant book. Marilyn would truely have been happy with this book. Whether you are a Marilyn Monroe fan or you are just curious about this iconic Hollywood actress this book will definitely be intresting to read. Before I read this book I thought Marilyn Monroe was all Hollywood glitz and glamour. After reading this book however I found that Marilyn was a sweet down to earth woman who just wanted to be loved. I only hope Marilyn made it into heaven, because in her life most of the people that said they loved her and called themselves her friend only used and betrayed Marilyn. I hope that one day Marilyn's death will finally be proven as murder and this case of wrong doing can be closed so Marilyn can finally rest in peace.
A Touching Tribute to Marilyn.......2006-06-09
This was indeed a touching tribute. I felt very connected to Marilyn while reading her stories. The photos were just as gorgeous. I could have gone without George Barris' interjections as they usually just repeated what Marilyn said. But it was his book and she was apparently his friend, so I suppose he deserves some spotlight too.
Add this to your Monroe collections! It's a definite keeper.
"Terriffic, excellent and up close and personal look at the legend!".......2006-02-06
When this book was released, I did not know, that one day I would be the proud owner of numerous items that are shown in this book (like the orange Pucci, pants, and the white hooded bathingrobe, which was the LAST PIECE Monroe would wear alive{stated by her housekeeper Eunice Murray in her book!}), and which are worn by Marilyn Monroe. I bought them at Christie's in'99; an auction which was also attended by Mr. Robert W. Otto, who claims to have so many private items of Marilyn Monroe, and because they are PRIVATE he has no pictures of all the "junk" he is displaying(like so called Marilyn Monroe's hair rollers with hair attached - which are REALLY made in 1974 - 12 years after MM's tragic death!)This is a huge scandal & fraud! Look at this book, Mr. Otto! The items are ALL private items! And they were offered at Christie's! Why did you not buy ONE item there and now claim to have such an extensive and real collection, when you have not ONE photo of MM wearing any of your "personal items!" This book is so important, as George Barris (I met him several times in recent years during the memorial service for Miss Monroe each August 5th) really loved Marilyn, and that reflects in his photos! MM really seemed to have fun taking these amazing shuts. I do not agree that he took the LAST shot ever of MM, as also Bert Stern claims. Those were actually taken by Allan Grant! This book really is a must for any starting collector and also for the collector who claims to have "one of the biggest collection of MM memorabilia"! Maybe on MM dolls, plates, paper cut outs, wines, books about MM and magazines...?!
Thank you so much Mr. Barris, for such an important, and intersting piece, for the authentication of my MM treasures, in the puzzle that is called: Marilyn Monroe!

Van Gogh, a man worth getting to know........2006-12-19
In his early years as an artist, Vincent Van Gogh vividly related his concept of art to his brother Theo in two separate letters from July of 1882, numbered 218 and 221. In this book of Vincent's letters, translated by W.H. Auden, these letters can be more carefully read than if I were to paraphrase or quote bits and pieces here. His letters are a portal into the mind of a great artist and a misunderstood man. While there are more complete books of Van Goghs writings available, this collection gets to the core of Vincent as a man and as an artist.
Vincent was not some wacko who cut off part of his ear and shot himself from insanity, he was rather, a deeply caring man, a genius who observed life so far over the heads of the so-called art experts that they could not see his vision. I did not become a lover of Vincent's art work until after I had read this book of his letters and was able to see more clearly what he was conveying on canvas. I have admired Auden as a poet for many years and this translation of his is far more readable than other translations I have read since. For anyone who has ever admired Van Gogh's paintings, this book is a must read, but for anyone who has seen them and not appreceiated his perception of the world, read this book and you will change your mind and your heart as well. You might even come to understand and love this great man's artwork. JJ
An excellent selection of letters.......2006-10-20
The British poet WH Auden has compiled a wonderful selection from Van Gogh's letters. Auden makes his selection..."What," I asked myself, "is the single most important fact about Von Gogh?" To that there seemed only one answer - "That he painted pictures". Hence the selection focuses on those letters which contain his reflections on the art of painting and the problems of being a painter. Other letters, eg to his father and brother, are included as they throw light upon Van Gogh's career as a painter. Also included are descriptions of VG by his acquaintances, 40 illustrations and a brief biography by his nephew. Of interest to artists as well as admirers of Van Gogh's works.

Book Description
This is the catalog for an exhibition of ninety nineteenth-century photographs drawn primarily from the world-class collection of Michael G. Wilson. Included are the starkly beautiful photographs of Sergeant James McDonald's surveys of Palestine and Jerusalem; recently discovered photographs by Ernest Benecke; and the rare photographs by Maxime Du Camp taken in 1850 as he traveled with Flaubert.
With the invention of photography and the increasing popularity of travel in the mid-nineteenth century, the Holy Land became one of the most photographed places on earth. Interest in Jerusalem and Palestine was particularly pronounced in England, partly because of England's need to control its routes to the riches of India, but also because of Britain's cultural identification with the people and lands of the Bible. Imperial ambition and deeply ingrained cultural associations resulted in a surge of photographic activity in Palestine. McDonald's photographs from surveys of Jerusalem and the Sinai epitomize the dual imperatives of Bible and Empire.
Photography provided a new standard for authenticity in pictorial representations. Early photographs were considered the ultimate bearers of "reality" at a time when viewers had not yet lost their naïve faith in the objective accuracy of photography. Throughout the last half of the nineteenth century, the Holy Land drew legions of photographers: amateurs recording a stop on the Grand Tour, academics pursuing archaeological theories, military surveyors--all trying to capture the truthfulness of a land that had enormous spiritual, emotional, and political connotations for most of the Western world. What they saw, and how they saw it, are the themes of this beautifully recorded collection.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful reproduction.......1998-08-02
This catalog of a traveling exhibition beautifully reproduces nearly 100 early photographs, most of Jerusalem and its environs, others of the Sinai Peninsula. The accompanying text puts the photographs in historical context, and discusses the ways in which the choices and treatments of subject reflect both the technological and ideological choices of the photographers. --Aramco World
