This is serious stuff. The most widely used medical text in the world and the hypochondriac's bible, the Merck has the lowdown on the vast expanse of human diseases, disorders and injuries, as well as their symptoms and recommended therapy. It's intended for physicians and medical students, but though the type is tiny and the language technical, the Merck's a valuable volume for anyone with more than a passing interest in bodily ills.

Book Description

The world's most widely used medical reference now features expanded clinical focus on each category of disorder, as well as more specific guidance on patient examinations. The thoroughly revised and updated 18th Edition is packed with essential information on diagnosing and treating medical disorders to help medical professionals deliver the best care to their patients.

This handy, compact guide was written by a team of clinicians for everyday use. Designed for maximum clinical utility, the new Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy makes it easy to find the right information, right when it is needed. It is a must-have for medical students, residents, practicing physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals.

I ordered this book to be shipped to Puerto Rico. Was told that it would be there by 06/25. Still don't have it. According to Amazon's online tracking the book arrived in Puerto Rico yesterday but still has not been delivered. Customer service tells me that it was shipped via ParcelPool. I made an inquiry at ParcelPool and was told that they work "in partnership" with the US Postal Service. The representative told me that the EARLIEST that we will get delivery of this book will be on Thursday!! Explain to me how that is considered 06/25 delivery and how on earth anyone would consider that good customer service!!!!

UPDATE 06/27/07: STILL NO BOOK!!

4 out of 5 stars What about the Gettysburg Address?.......2004-07-30

A gorgeously illustrated, eye-catching text that spans the prehistory and history of the region that we now call the United States. When I was growing up in the 1970s, we had several well regarded books on American history. Yet none had the profusion of colour illustrations on almost every page. Students using this as their first text will not notice it, but the book speaks to substantial advances in the lowering cost of colour printing in 30 years. Of course, we have much more than just eye candy here. The illustrations are well integrated into the textual narrative. The text flows with a well polished grace that should draw in the interest of many students.

The book does not gloss over various bloody aspects of history. Above all, of slavery. There is extensive description of the human cost of the Middle Passage and the subsequent suffering of plantation life. Relations of the settlers with native tribes are frankly discussed. Several massacres of tribes are mentioned. Yet the book is not an anti-American screed. The common theme is that, however imperfect, the US continued to move in an ever upward and progressive manner.

Perhaps the authors could have deigned to include the full text of the Gettysburg Address. A short speech that many consider to be amongst the greatest of American discourses. By contrast, the text has, and quite rightly so, the most memorable excerpts from King's

To eat at Thomas Keller's Napa Valley restaurant, The French Laundry, is to experience a peak culinary experience. In The French Laundry Cookbook, Keller articulates his passions and offers home cooks a means to duplicate the level of perfection that makes him one of the best chefs in the U.S. and, arguably, the world.

This cookbook provides 150 recipes exactly as they are used at Keller's restaurant. It is also his culinary manifesto, in which he shares the unique creative processes that led him to invent Peas and Carrots--a succulent pillow of a lobster paired with pea shoots and creamy ginger-carrot sauce--and other high-wire culinary acts. It offers unimagined experiences, from extracting chlorophyll to use in coloring sauces to a recipe for chocolate cake accompanied by red beet ice cream and a walnut sauce. You are urged to follow Keller's recipes precisely and also to view them as blueprints. To keep them alive, they must be infused with your own commitment to perfection and pleasure, as you define those terms.

Keller's story, shared through the writing of Michael Ruhlman, shows how this chef was both born and made. After winning rave reviews when he was still in his 20s, it took a more experienced chef throwing a knife at him because he did not know how to truss a chicken to open his eyes to the importance of the discipline and techniques of classical French cooking. To acquire these fundamental skills, he apprenticed at eight of the finest restaurants in France.

Grounded in classic technique, Keller's cooking is characterized by traditional marriages of ingredients, assembled in breathtakingly daring new ways, such as Pearls and Oyster, glistening caviar and oysters served on a bed of creamy pearl tapioca. Continually piquing the palate, his meals are a procession of 5 to 10 dishes, all small portions vibrantly composed. For example, Pan Roasted Breast of Squab with Swiss Chard, Seared Foie Gras, and Oven-Dried Black Figs require just three birds to serve six. The result: you are never sated, always stimulated.

The 200 photographs by Deborah Jones include more than just beauty shots: they show how to prepare various dishes; how Keller, shown stroking a whole salmon, respects his ingredients; and how the perfection of baby fava beans still nestled in the downy lining of their succulent pod, or the seduction of an abundance of fresh caviar, calls out the best from the chef. --Dana Jacobi

    Book Description

Thomas Keller, chef/proprieter of the French Laundry in the Napa Valley—"the most exciting place to eat in the United States," wrote Ruth Reichl in The New York Times—is a wizard, a purist, a man obsessed with getting it right. And this, his first cookbook, is every bit as satisfying as a French Laundry meal itself: a series of small, impeccable, highly refined, intensely focused courses.

Most dazzling is how simple Keller's methods are: squeegeeing the moisture from the skin on fish so it sautées beautifully; poaching eggs in a deep pot of water for perfect shape; the initial steeping in the shell that makes cooking raw lobster out of the shell a cinch; using vinegar as a flavor enhancer; the repeated washing of bones for stock for the cleanest, clearest tastes.

From innovative soup techniques, to the proper way to cook green vegetables, to secrets of great fish cookery, to the creation of breathtaking desserts; from beurre monté to foie gras au torchon, to a wild and thoroughly unexpected take on coffee and doughnuts, The French Laundry Cookbook captures, through recipes, essays, profiles, and extraordinary photography, one of America's great restaurants, its great chef, and the food that makes both unique.

One hundred and fifty superlative recipes are exact recipes from the French Laundry kitchen—no shortcuts have been taken, no critical steps ignored, all have been thoroughly tested in home kitchens. If you can't get to the French Laundry, you can now re-create at home the very experience the Wine Spectator described as "as close to dining perfection as it gets."

    5 out of 5 stars A treatise on perfection ... {just don't try this at home}.......2007-08-20

The easiest way to put this book into it's unique perspective is with an amusing metaphor. This is the sort of book that hardcore foodies and regular line chefs alike read in the same way that a horny teenage boy will oogle a drop-dead gorgeous penthouse centerfold ... the essential experience is one of vicarious (but maddeningly indirect) communion with utterly impractical & unnattainable perfection.

The recipes that Thomas Keller creates & serves at The French Laundry in Napa Valley California (which is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest restaurant experiences in America) simply cannot be made at home, or even in 95% of most restaurants, without the aid of a top-flight fully staffed "brigade system" of supporting chefs, along with a commitment to using nothing but the absolute best and freshest high-end ingredients available, without regard to labor or cost.

The average chef, hardcore or not, simply doesnt keep (for example) a speed rack of 12 varieties of freshly made herb oils, 12-15 varieties of freshly made and perfectly clarified and reduced demi-glaces of assorted wild game, veal, beef, and lobster on hand ... and that's just for sauce bases and garnishes. Even the simpler recipes with relatively few ingredients are all difficult, if not impossible to make, without 'brigade' support, because the ingredients required aren't commonly available (or are of insufficient quality/freshness), and require skills and/or time commitments that are beyond one's ability, impractical, or both. And even if you DO succeed in making a given dish, the essence of 'amuse bouche' is to enjoy only a tiny portion (a mere 1-2 bites) before palate fatigue can mute the expience.

Like I said ... most home chefs arent going to expend copious manhours making a dish that you're only supposed to have 1-2 worshipful tastes of.

So, this is a book that you read because you want to commune, in some small way, with the mindset and spirit of the man who authored it ... and Thomas Keller is all about the quest for brief moments of sublime perfection. He will stop at nothing to attain the perfect taste experience. That's what "amuse bouche" (small 1 bite appetizers) are all about.

It's a humbling experience to buy and avariciously savor, from cover to cover, an entire cookbook, and STILL know that it's unlikey that you'd ever be able to do justice to even a tiny handful of the recipes described within.

Very highly recommended ... but also wildly impractical for most home cooks.

5 out of 5 stars Thomas Keller - French Laundry.......2007-08-15

i have not cooked much from keller's books, but i am not going to review them from that perspective; i will assume that the results of his cooking practises are good, and focus more on his methods.

i have noticed that, even in the more acclaimed cookbooks, by the big names, recipes are either very sloppily executed by the chef, or they have left out steps or details from the recipe in the book. this is fine some of the time, because not everything can, or needs to be, included in a cookbook recipe. however, i have found that it is by including certain details that an author helps a reader to actually learn how to cook, and not just to follow recipes. even if the author does not present them as a clear set of general rules, specific examples still allow further cooking principles to be derived, and over time it they get the reader thinking about refining and developing their methods. the examples of good principles can be found in every one of keller's recipes, not so much as general methods from first glance, but as specific examples that point to the general method. then there are the "importance of" sections, where keller makes more of an effort to formalize a certain element he believes is important - case in point is his stellar section on stocks (though for me, Richard Olney's stock instructions in "The French Menu Cookbook" are the best of any in book form). keller seems to take traditional or classical starting points, and refine or elaborate on them according to his philosophy; he seems to do things properly, and does not skimp for time, money, diets, or effort required. other authors who write similarily to keller in this respect are Richard Olney and Paul Bertolli; Jeremiah Towers, Judy Rodgers, and Michel Richards also have good books in this respect.
i would recommend keller for those who enjoy the prospects of refined cooking done through well developed methodology.

5 out of 5 stars Great (and useful) Cookbook.......2007-07-12

This book, like Bouchon, is both a beautiful look at Keller's food and a practical book for producing it. In contrast to the complaints about the
recipes being too complicated, too fussy, etc, I've found that the recipes are challenging but not impossible--if you take the time--and that the technique translates well to all kinds of other cooking. Not weeknight cooking but that's hardly a surprise. The agnolotti are great, the "pot-au-feu" is wonderful, the truffled custards are lovely, and I could go on. Regardless, this is a great book for the kitchen and for the library.

    2 out of 5 stars Very disappointing........2005-05-18

I regularly read great articles from the subscription program of HBR and rely on its contents for great insight into today's business environment.

Unfortunately, the HBR book series make a poor comparison. I have even wonder if HBR is recycling unused, or rejected submissions for these books.

I bought Managing People, Brand managment and Marketing and stopped reading each after just two articles. They were just all a waste of time.

5 out of 5 stars Readable papers on broad topics in management.......2004-07-26

Whether you're just entering people management or have been doing it for years, this book grabs a selection of readable papers on a variety of topics from compensation to handling 'poor performers' to more effective (but non-manipulative!) means of persuasion.

Especially interesting were the two articles on the performance of individuals and the messages -- both explicit and implicit -- that managers give to their reports and how they affect performance. You should definitely give them a read if you think you have an average to poor performer that you're actively working with right now.

5 out of 5 stars HBR Managing People.......2000-04-05

Definitely one of the better books in the series. Discussion of common corporate issues. Provides good solutions. I've read 4 in the series and like this one the most.

    Book Description

Unlike the M&A fever that gripped so many large, publicly held corporations in the 1980s, the mergers and acquisitions activity of the 1990s is primarily centered around small and midsize businesses. But the sale and purchase of these companies present a unique constellation of problems, pitfalls, and challenges that may lead the unprepared buyer or seller to disappointment, difficulty, or even disaster. In this book—the only mergers and acquisitions guide that focuses on small and midsize companies—experts from every profession and specialty related to the sale or acquisition of a business lead buyers and sellers step by step through each phase of the M&A process. Their aim is to help both parties avoid hazards and mistakes and arrive at a fair and mutually profitable arrangement.

Beginning with the basics, the book offers an overview of the market: the size and type of businesses covered; who the buyers and sellers are; why businesses are put up for sale; how to prepare a business for sale; and how to size up a business that is on the market. The book's second section looks at financial and valuation issues, a particularly important area when purchasing companies that are not subject to SEC regulations. Coverage includes normalizing historical financial statements, using financial forecasts, determining real ROI, valuation methods for midsize companies, and determining the value of partial ownerships, intangible assets, and business risk characteristics.

After a detailed examination of legal issues, the book explores the roles of outside professionals in the M&A process, including intermediaries, attorneys, accountants, business appraisers, and machinery and technical appraisers. The book concludes with a look at various ways of structuring the final deal and the pros and cons of each arrangement from both the buyer's and seller's perspectives.

With 36 self-contained chapters that can be read in sequence or consulted independently, Mergers and Acquisitions for Small and Midsize Companies is both a comprehensive M&A tutorial for newcomers to the process and an indispensable reference for professionals involved in any aspect of the buying and selling of small and midsize companies.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Buying and Selling a Business from a Distinguished Group of Recognized Experts

Mergers and Acquisitions Handbook for Small and Midsize Companies is the perfect guide for anyone who is selling a business or hoping to buy one. Each of the nearly 30 contributors is a recognized expert in a particular aspect of the M&A process. These authors explain their topics from the ground up, assuming no previous experience on the part of the reader and addressing the subject from every conceivable angle.

3 out of 5 stars Lots of information, but a bit disjoint.......2005-01-28

I am a business school student and used this book for a project. I found much of the information to be useful, but not very specific. It touches on all the major issues, but does not really go into detail. I guess that is to be expected as you could probably write volumes on each subject.

I would reccomend this book as an introduction to M&A, but it is not to be used as a reference for each specific area.

Also, the book is written by several authors with different styles. That means that there is often overlap in the things that they talk about and no consistency in writing styles. Not a horrible thing, but at times a bit distracting.

Who would have ever guessed that dental disease could have such a signifigant part in so many illnesses? For far to long denistry and the rest of medicine have been totally seperate fields. What is going on in your mouth is seen as having little relavance to the disease conditions going on the in the rest of the body. For to long dental school training has focused on saving your teeth at any cost.

"The Roots of Disease: Connecting Denistry and Medicine" was written by two men. One of these men is a dentist and the other a cadiologist. For over a decade these two health care professionals have witnessed that the removal and complete healing of infected dental sites can often result in the total healing (or at least vast improvement) of other diseases in the body.

Have you ever been told that root canals harbor bacteria that infect the rest of your body causing diseae? That this is also true of sites where wisdom teeth have been improperly removed? I wasn't able to regain my health until my dental issues were dealt with. I no longer have a stressed out immune system and the constant candida albicans that this reulted in.

This well written, thorough look at the health problems affeted by oral infection is a must read for anyone interested in obtaining optimal health.

Tom Levy graduated from Johns Hopkins University, studied and taught medicine at Tulane, and then, to paraphrase his words, actually began to think about what he was doing.

This book, written together with Dr. Kulacz, a former instructor at NYU, is his critique of dentistry. When I brought it to the attention of my dentist, a great dentist in his own right, he was very grateful for the ideas in it, and agreed that Levy and Kulacz's contention that painkillers that contain noradrenalin retard wound healing, and that you have to manually curette (scrape) out the mess under bad root canals made absolute sense. Using a drill produces sufficient heat to kill more bone.)

Anyone with an inordinate interest in critiques of dental science - small crowd that we may be - does well to purchase this book.

5 out of 5 stars Thank God for this book!.......2005-07-21

Thank God for this book and Dr.Kulacz! A M.D. from the Cleveland Clinic told me about Dr.Kulacz and this book. When reading this book about some of the other patients I thought I was reading about myself. This book is as truthful as it gets about root canals , dental materials and proper procedures about extractions. This book is a must read for the people that suspect that their teeth may be one of the culprits to their health issues. Of course after reading this book I would think most sensible people would not take drastic action as to extract their own teeth ,as one person posted. I would love to stand outside of every dentist office and pass out this book to patients that are about to get a root canal. This book opens your eyes to the other side of root canals that your dentist will not tell you before the procedure. By the way your natural teeth are not better if they are giving you pain and lowering your immune system. You must read this book if you are searching for the truth about your teeth problems. Dr.Kulacz has integrity and morals which is what you would expect from any doctor. If I could I would rate this book higher than a five.

5 out of 5 stars Vital information for your health.......2004-11-12

I have not only read this book, but have also been a patient of Dr. Kulacz. Unfortunately, many detractors choose wishful thinking over verifiable, scientific fact. They pay for their ongoing denial with health troubles. Nobody wants to lose any teeth, but if the alternative is long term devastating health problems, the loss of a tooth is a small price to pay. I was in this category with both root canals and the related dental infections and they badly affected my health. Once removed I felt noticeably better. To further prove the case, the extracted tooth was sent to a lab for testing and the results confirmed serious infection. Study the subject and look at the evidnce and you will agree with me. Read all the related books as the evidence is overwhelming. Find one of the very few dentists around the country experienced in this protocol. PS, Most dentists know virtually nothing about any of this. It is therefore your health and your responsibility.

1 out of 5 stars Provacative and inflammatory.......2004-05-07

It seems that after reading this book one would be inclined to take drastic action, like extracting thier OWN valuable teeth. Teeth need root canal treatment beacause they are infected in the first place. Most of the time, the infection is totally removed (85-95%). Yes there are instances where this infection is resolved, in which case extraction may be needed. Yes after extraction there may be bacteria left behind so what then....extract your whole jaw???? (did some one forget to mention that we have an immune system that has been dealing with bacteria, fungi and viruses for long before dentistry was around). Okay so our jaw is removed and some of the naturally occuring bacteris on our skin (yes our skin is not sterile) gets into the wound. Then what, ask for a decapitation? This seems to be the line of though given by the aurthor/s and it is totaly irrational.

Example 2. You get a scratch on your arm and yes bacteria get in, the skin heals over and traps the bacteria....what would the aurthor suggest...an amputation of your arm? Or doest he think he can pluck out microscopic bacteria (that are too small for see) with tweezers. Non-sense.

Our body parts are valuable, we have an immune system that fights bacteria and heals wounds/infections. We have marvelous doctors and dentists that can help the body beat these problems..so we can keep our body parts. Natural teeth are better that articfical anything.

THOR: THE ETERNALS SAGA collects Thor Annual #7 and Thor #283 - 291, presenting a classic Marvel Comics story from a time when they knew how to make them big without making them stupid. A heavy-duty tale so vast, it needs two trade paperbacks to tell! Writer Roy Thomas pulls out all the stops on this one, as Thor learns of a forgotten chapter in his pre-Donald Blake life. About 1000 years ago, Thor met the Eternals on Earth in the land that would one day become Mexico. Their shared adventures revealed to him the secret ancestry of the human race and the Eternals' connections to the corrupt Deviants and god-like Celestials; however, in order to keep Thor from interfering with the arrival of the third Celestial host on Earth, the Eternal Valkin made Thor forget the episode and return to Asgard. Now, Thor's memories have been awakened by Mimir of Asgard, and when he returns to Earth to search for the remnants of the Eternals, he runs smack into the middle of the fourth host of Celestials! It is time to begin the 50-year judgment of mankind, but Thor isn't one to wait that long. He wants the Celestials to leave, and this time around, the Eternals are only too eager to help him... or are they?

Honestly, I don't see how Marvel could have crammed any more into this book, and what's even more astounding is that this is only half of the story! It has everything a classic Marvel fan could want, and even those of you who only have an interest in more recent comics, or even strictly DC, could benefit from reading it, as it provides excellent perspective on the relationships between the Asgardians, Greek Gods, & Celestials, as well as humans, Eternals, and Deviants. Roy Thomas gets a big thumbs-up for constructing a tale of this scope while keeping it easy to follow, and it ties in amazingly well to both past and (at the time) current storylines. The art is amazingly consistent throughout, even though it switches between Walt Simonson, John Buscema, Keith Pollard, and Arvell Jones - these guys keep the spirit of Jack Kirby's creations alive with their powerful illustrations.

I only wish Marvel could craft more tales like this these days, but it seems they have neither the ambition nor the talent. Oh well... as long as they keep reprinting them, I'll keep buying them.

    Book Description

Astronaut Tom Jones had trained for years for one climactic moment: his first step through an airlock into the vast nothingness of space. What neither he nor anyone else had counted on was a door that refused to open. But that is the nature of space flight (as recent experience tragically proves) -- anything can, and sometimes does, go wrong. Fully aware of the possibility of disaster, astronauts still dare to venture to the edge of the cosmos in search of knowledge and adventure. Sky Walking is the story of one of those brave explorers. Jones spent eleven years in the NASA astronaut program, making four trips into space. He ultimately spent fifty-two days orbiting Earth, including more than nineteen hours outside during extravehicular activity -- that is, sky walking. Jones's readers get the inside story, written with a lyrical pen, on life in the new century with NASA, the space shuttle, and the International Space Station.

They'll read about the shock and thrill of liftoff, find out how strange it was for a former Cold Warrior to find himself working hand-in-hand with his former rivals, the Russians, and get a vicarious feel for the overwhelming experience of a walk in space -- orbiting Earth at more than 17,000 miles per hour, 200 miles up, with only a spacesuit separating Jones from oblivion.

1 out of 5 stars Makes space flight dull and boring.......2007-04-10

Not the Right Stuff for me.
The writing is wordy, attempts to be profound and "educated" at every turn, and fails.

His single most dramatic story, the stuck hatch, is anti-climatic.

His second most dramatic story: too much air getting into the food packets.

There is very little "inside scoop" here, as NASA is portrayed as all glorious, and almost perfect. Yet we know, and see demonstrated on a regular basis, that the opposite is true.

Find this locally if you can, and browse through it first to see if its the right stuff for you.

5 out of 5 stars A memoir by one of the "new breed" of astronauts.......2007-03-01

There are many excellent books written by and about the Right Stuff astronauts who flew during the earlier days of the space program. However, until recently, there has been a nearly total lack of books by and about the shuttle astronauts who fly now. For better or worse, today's space program is as different from the program of the early days as the shuttle is different from the Apollo capsules. And today's astronauts are different, too.

Mike Mullane was the first of the shuttle astronauts to write about his experiences in his book Riding Rockets. However, Mullane was a member of the group that made the transition from the Apollo program to the shuttle program, and the tone of his book is almost wistful; he clearly wanted to be one of the Right Stuff guys-- and he means guys-- but he ended up being a shuttle technician.

Sky Walking is a memoir by a very different sort of astronaut. Tom Jones was very young during the "glory days" of the space program, so he has no Right Stuff preconceptions about astronauts as death-defying heroes. Rather, he is an Air Force Academy graduate who flew B-52s, earned a PhD in planetary sciences, and became a dedicated, professional shuttle program technician. That could have made for a dull, technical book if it weren't for his intellect and, more importantly, his powers of observation and ability to reflect on what he experienced.

Jones flew four shuttle missions and took three space walks on his final mission, which was dedicated to construction on the International Space Station. His accounts of what space walks are like-- and of the hundreds of hours of training that precedes each one-- are first rate. His descriptions of the ISS and of the issues surrounding its planning, funding, and construction are excellent. I don't know of any other insider's book that deals with the ISS in such detail or with such authority. This is because Jones was an administrator in the ISS program between his third and fourth shuttle flights.

The subtitle says that this is "an astronaut's memoir," and that's exactly what it is. Jones takes us trough his selection as an astronaut, his general training, his years of waiting for flights, his training for those flights, and the flights themselves. There is considerable technical information in the book, but Jones does an excellent job of clarifying it for non-experts. The real focus is on Jones himself-- what he sees, thinks, and feels about what's happening to him.

This is an outstanding book. It answers the two basic questions many of us have always had: "What's it REALLY like to fly in space?" and "What are those people REALLY like?" I thoroughly enjoyed Sky Walking, and I recommend it most highly.

5 out of 5 stars The Next Best Thing to Traveling to Space Yourself.......2006-12-19

Sky Walking is the best account of the experience of space that I have ever read. It takes you deep into the physical and emotional sensations of space travel where you the reader experience what astronauts experience right down to the mundane task trying to locate an item that has floated away in the cabin or trying to use an exercise bike with zero gravity. Tom Jones is an articulate writer capable of constructing wonderful imagery and some choice metaphors about every aspect of space travel from training to launch to rentry. His descriptions of his space walks and working aboard the International Space Station are particularly memorable. Jones is also not afraid to render an opinion about this America's commitment to space what can and should be done to maintain NASA as a shining symbol of American capability. I highly recommend this book to anyone with a curiosity about what space travel is really like.

5 out of 5 stars Sky Walking Reaches High on Many Accounts.......2006-12-17

This is a highly readable and expertly written account by Tom Jones about his astronaut career.
He writes from his heart, and has clearly thought a lot about how to effectively communicate his experiences.
His use of imagery puts this book in the realm of literature, though it is definitely non-fiction.
A must for your Christmas list if you are or once were an aspiring astronaut, an aspiring writer of topics related to space and technology or just interested in knowing what it is like up there. It is a great read; I laughed, I cried, learned something about space, space policy and history, and was amazed by it all!

5 out of 5 stars Another great astronaut biography.......2006-12-16

"Sky Walking" is the second space shuttle astronaut biography I have read after Mike Mullane's "Riding Rockets". I enjoyed both books a lot but they are very different in style. Mike Mullane's book concentrates mostly on humorous anecdotes from his astronaut career (although there are serious parts) whereas Tom Jones has more of the detail involved in astronaut training and I would have to say that if you want to know the fine details about being an astronaut, get this book. I haven't seen anything better in this regard.

Tom Jones started his astronaut career in 1990, just about the time when Mike Mullane was winding down (he was in the 1978 astronaut class) so the two books cover virtually the whole Space Shuttle era. Tom eventually flew four missions, the last being the outfitting of the Destiny laboratory on ISS in 2001. As the title suggests, there is a lot about space walking but Tom didn't get to do any until the last mission. He was scheduled to do a spacewalk on STS-80 but, as described in the first chapter, the airlock wouldn't open.

The book is simply packed with detail on mission training and the space walk training in the NASA WETF and NBL training facilities is described so well that your body almost starts to ache in sympathy. Being an astronaut is definitely not an easy job. As you would expect, there are numerous anecdotes throughout, one of my favourites being Story Musgrave staying on the Shuttle flight deck during the STS-80 re-entry so he could video it. Certainly a man with the right stuff.

If you just want to get an overview of astronaut training rather than the full detail I would probably recommend Mike Mullane's book ahead of this one. There isn't as much humor in "Sky Walking" either but it's still worth five stars.
