Book Description
Judy Chicago's masterpiece The Dinner Party is a monumental work of art conceived as a symbolic history of women in Western civilization. Strategically countering the traditional erasure of women's achievements, this epic installation honours 1038 iconic, mythical, archetypal and historical women. This, the most definitive book to be published on Chicago's masterwork, reveals more fully than ever before the art and the artist's expanded research into the rich history embodied in the installation. In lively contextualizing sections, Chicago discusses the creative genesis of The Dinner Party, the technical processes involved, and the work's early - often hostile - reception by the art world, and its subsequent preservation and permanent exhibition.
A magnificently produced book and the ultimate source on an iconic work that is taught in art history and women's studies courses around the world
Profusely illustrated throughout with documentary images and new photography that displays the work in detail
Publication coincides with the release of Gail Levin's major biography, Becoming Judy Chicago, followed by the opening in March 2007 of the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, Brooklyn Museum, New York, permanent home of The Dinner Party

THE DINNER PARTY.......2007-06-12
THIS IS A COMPREHENSIVE AND BEAUTIFULLY PRESENTED VOLUME ABOUT A COMPLEX AND HIGHLY ORIGINAL WORK OF ART.
An excellent, illustrated guide to the art of Judy Chicago........2007-05-19
The Dinner Party: From Creation to Reservation offers up an excellent, illustrated guide to the art of Judy Chicago. All other books documenting her DINNER PARTY are all out of print, but even when they were available, none offered such an extensive, full-color treatment as does THE DINNER PARTY: FROM CREATION TO RESERVATION. Documentary photos follow its creation and an essay by Judy Chicago surveys the history of women, the collaborative effort involved, and the history of the work's exhibition. Perfect for college-level art libraries; especially those with some works on Judy Chicago already in their holdings.

Super Entertaining Ideas.......2007-04-17
I've been entertaining for over 20 years for family and friends and was looking for some new ideas. I tried some of the recipes in this book for my last Christmas party and they were a huge success. I can't wait to try some of the other seasonal ideas in this book.
This cookbook exists to make you look good.......2006-08-21
Although I have never done an entire menu from this book, every recipe I've tried from here has been delicious, super-easy and perfect, and I've tried several for my dinner parties. The desserts, especially, are delicious, impressive and simple.
I love how the menus are all arranged seasonally, taking advantage of appropriate ingredients and cooking methods. Stick to the season you're in, and you can't go wrong. The author's suggestions for making a party special are fun to read, too. Admittedly, I am from San Francisco, and so is she, so she mentions foods and places that are near and dear to my heart. Her food sensibilities are right up my alley.
If you're a Saveur reader, a couple of these menus will look familiar, as they are from articles she's written for them (the Gnafrons and the Old Stoves Dinner).
i love this book.......2006-07-25
Simple Soirees is my new favorite cookbook. In December I lugged it to New Zealand to bring as gift to our hostess. After she opened it; I snuck it off to my room to read at night. It distinguishes itself by being the first cookbook that I have read cover to cover. It read like a novel. We spent the rest of our stay making many of the dishes. Our favorite was the whole fish wrapped in herbs for Christmas Eve...it was extraordinary. My daughter and I have made several of the sweet things together like the heavenly fragrant geranium ice cream and the lavander and cardamom cookies. Everything we have made has turned out delicious.
I think Peggy Knickerbocker is a genuis. It is not only my favorite cookbook, but it is my favorite gift to give as well.
Great ideas--delicious food.......2006-04-06
Lovely ideas, encouraging, and full of do-able advice.
And notice on the flap of the book--NO author's face, only a photo of lovely legs. Hmm, little ego and lots of advice--Cheers.
inspiring & easy to use.......2005-12-06
I like to have people over for dinner but I'm never sure what makes a good menu. This book takes the worry out of entertaining. The tone is accessible and reassuring, the recipes are great and not hard to follow. Now I feel confident enough to mix and match some of the menus and I know everything will come out alright. The photos and design are gorgeous so it's a good gift book, too.

A treasure to savor the enjoyment of living in his prose!.......1999-09-27
Like the other two Hadamuscin books that I own, this one is a treasure to read and look at. He makes a person feel enwrapped by the warmth of good times, whether in a large party, an intimate dinner or with the traditions of America and family.
It is his descriptions that I treasure and some of the recipes, though not all that I have tried work for me.
Splendid photographs as well.
Food that brings you home to mom!.......1999-03-27
Even if I didn't like to cook, this book would tempt me to try some of Mr. Hadamuscin's recipes. They are written in a clear manner, and the photographs are outstanding. Mr. Hadamuscin's recipes are a tribute to food, family and home. I've made many of his treats, and I have never been disappointed. His recipes are presented in a format such as "An Old Salem Pumpkin Supper", or "A Comforting Supper", where the entire menu is presented. All the thinking is done for you! I have many of his books, and look forward to any future publications.

The simple path to great dinner party memories.......2004-07-17
I love this cookbook and have used it for years to throw small themed dinner parties. The recipes are all simple, healthy and quick, and there'll be no shortage of food with the robust menus it provides. The decorating ideas are inexpensive, easily obtainable, and fun, and each theme even comes with a short list of mood music recommendations to create a completely themed atmosphere. Perfection!
The book breaks down step-by-step how to put each themed party together, so that it has two added benefits: One, each theme's menu can be easily broken down and assigned to different guests for "pot luck" parties (for example, one person brings the bread, the other brings the theme dessert, another brings a CD, etc.) Two, it has such a wide variety of ideas, and the ideas are so flexible, that there's plenty of room to be creative. If you don't like the theme's dessert, you can find another recipe on the Internet easily and the "spirit" of the idea is kept intact.
User-friendly, thorough and flexible, this is the only resource for themed dinner parties I'll ever anticipate needing. Whether you're having 3 or 30 people over, dinner parties never need be boring or stuffy again - the ideas in this book are sure to delight and impress your guests and make your life a LOT easier.
Perfect addition to any cookbook collection.......2003-09-26
Karen Brown's book offers a terrific format for throwing parties. The recipes are easy to follow and delicious. I like the fact that the ingredients are common so you aren't searching various specialty stores to complete the ingredient list. The themes are spread out throughout the year so it's easy to plan a party at the drop of a hat. Not only does this book have lots of recipes, it goes into everything from suggested invitations, appropriate music and decorating ideas. My only complaint is no pictures. I admit I'm a fan of the glossy books and like to see the author's interpretation of what was said versus my ideas. However, the book is so well done that I think you will refer to it over and over like I have.
Easy And Delicious Ideas For Your Own Perfect Dinner Party!.......2002-10-29
Karen Brown's third cookbook is a winner, with 21 themed and ethnic special events, from Superbowl Parties, Romance Dinners for Two, Academy Award Dinners, Backyard Barbecues to Italian Feats and New Orleans-style cuisine.
The recipes are simple for the most part, and usually feature easily obtainable ingredients. Each recipe features numbered steps which are not difficult for the cook with even average cooking skills.
Some of the delectable recipes include Pesto Cheesecake, Butternut Squash Soup, Potato and Vegetable Salad, Spareribs, Watermelon Sorbet, Caramel Brownies and the easiest Chocolate Truffle recipe I've ever seen!
Along with recipes, the author gives clever ideas for invitations, place settings, centerpieces and other decorating ideas, as well as recommended beverages and even the sort of music that would work best with your own special bash.
This light-hearted, yet elegant cookbook is highly recommended, and the glossy stain-resistant cover of this over-sized softbound book is likewise appreciated, as one of the little details that will having you "wow" lucky guests with your own special events.
Straightforward, Easy & Delicious.......2001-11-04
I normally wouldn't have the time or really care to right a review but I felt I owed it to the author. I am an Executive Chef and often do private dinner parties. Most cookbooks I am ususally satisfied with 25% of the recipes but I have tried about half so far and every single one is fabulous! I like that they are simple and give great decor ideas as well. I only wish there were more menus to choose from. Just my two-cents.
Wonderful book! Five-star rating!.......1999-07-10
Had everything I needed with step-by-step guide--menus with recipes, inexpensive centerpiece tips and decorating ideas, even background music selections! I've tried two of the dinners so far: Southwest theme with fish and mango salsa with a quick black bean and corn salad, and the roast pork loin with cherry relish and praline cheesecake menu, and am going to try more. Highly recommended!

Fails to deliver .......2007-07-15
There is so much to like in this cookbook! The concept of entire seasonal menus put together for you, with notes on each recipe about what can be done ahead and when, plus wine suggestions is brilliant, right? Everything is laid out for you, and the recipes are fun and adventuresome. Unfortunately, however, too many of Landis' recipes end up being much more time-consuming than she would have you believe. I cooked three of the full menus for guests, and each time found myself really stressed out--exactly contrary to the main premise of the book! I would add that I am a very experienced home cook; I can't imagine how this would go for a novice. In addition, there are more than a few things that sound good but aren't: take the deviled eggs with guacamole, for instance. The avocado turns grayish-green in this combination. You can imagine how unappetizing this looks. In sum, this is a book that I really wanted to like and which contains some individual "keeper" recipes. It is quite flawed, however, and ultimately disappoints.
Cookbook.......2007-07-08
There are no pictures in this book but the tips and the make ahead directions make it worth it. Then there's the wine suggestions...
Delectably Inspiring.......2007-03-30
Dinner parties are usually a lot of fun - for the guests. For the cook, however, entertaining can be a non-stop cook-a-thon with little time to socialize. New York Times recipe taster Denise Landis understand this. After all, she once ran into someone and didn't remember that the woman had been a guest in her home.
That's why Landis put together 40 menus, divided by seasons, for dinner parties of eight people. Filled with easy favorites like deviled eggs (made with guacamole) and baked apples (seasoned with Amaretto), "Dinner for Eight" will also tempt the more intrepid cook with dishes like Scotian Lobster Chowder and Lemon Ginger Crepes. Delectably inspiring. I only wish there were more photos.

Entertaining has just gotten easier!.......2004-01-15
I bought this book after seeing the author on a local cooking show. I am so impressed with the layout, pictures and plans...it's just what I've been waiting for as a cook. She lays out in detail a menu and what you are doing with the food 3 days ahead of the party, 2 days, etc up until the day of the dinner party. It really takes the stress out of having people over for a fine meal.
Elegant but easy!.......2003-10-24
My family has been fortunate enough to be guests at the Dearth table on more than one occasion. Carol is a terrific cook and teacher. Her book is the result of many years of studying, experimenting and teaching. She has designed her book to be used year round, and has made planning a dinner party easy from start to finish. All you have to do is invite your guests, pick a menu, follow her Master Work Plan and relax. You almost feel like she has done the bulk of the work for you!! P.S. The food presentation in the photos is beautiful and makes you hungry just to look at it.
Delicious recipes and great explanations.......2003-10-20
I have made several of Carol's recipes and they were easy to make and oh so delicious--especially the Molten Chocolate Cakes! Yum!!
Carol's sidebars are very imformative. Her explanations make so much sense and are therefore easy to remember.
This book makes entertaining easy and less stressful because Carol takes you by the hand and guides you all the way through. I would recommend Cooking Class to anyone who enjoys cooking.

Can't find the book.......2000-09-07
Even though I have rated this book, I have never read it. Why? Well its for the simple fact that I can't find it anywhere. I know that it is out of print but I need it for a class and also for the fact that I want it . Iv heard so many interesting things about The dinner Party. I hope to share this not just with my classmates but with my mom and in the far, far future when I decide to have kids, I would like to share it with my little girl. so hopefuly whom ever reads my review (so to speak) it will be listened to and the people who need the book will have it as well and the people who want it.
A Must-Have for Women and for Men Who Appreciate Them.......1999-07-19
A triumph! A long-awaited celebration of truth about all womankind! A must-have for all women. and for men who truly appreciate their worth! Every female in the world should read this book cover-to cover and rejoice. A rare and beautiful work of art--second only to The Dinner Party exhibit itself. I am going to give this book to my daughter, friends of varying ethnic backgrounds, and several lesbian friends. How often do you find a book that speaks to the entire human race about the valuable contributions of the so-called "weaker sex"? Now we must all work to get The Dinner Party exhibit traveling, as it was originally intended to do, so that we can all personally stand in awe at this altar to all Eve's daughters!
Wonderful.......1999-06-21
What could be more thrilling than a genius like Judy Chicago as she challenges assumptions and traditions with her own brilliant and harrowingly moving depiction of Womyn's struggles. Truly enthralling, and, as another reviewer noted, a threat to the white male agendas of patriarchy. Give this book to all your friends!
Powerful and Empowering.......1998-04-09
"Dinner Party" is one of the all-time great works of feminist art, and although it proved too threatening to males, especially the white males of congress, it is art which MUST be witnessed by all young women. I applaud the other reviewers who have distributed this great book to other women.
A Must Have!.......1998-03-08
'The Dinner Party' is notable - not only for its beautiful art - but also for its amazing synopsis of women in history. If you are looking for a summary of the multitude of contributions by women, GET THE BOOK. The art is beautiful, stiking, and magical, the text is equally compelling. Especially recommended for art history, women's studies, etc

Readers are encouraged to understand why they like different flavors, for optimum pairing of the two........2006-11-07
There's over a thousand wines and a thousand cheeses in the world with many possible taste combinations: if you want to take the guesswork out of the process, be sure WINE & CHEESE PAIRING GUIDE: YOUR EXCITING SEARCH FOR WOW! COMBINATIONS is close at hand. It doesn't just recommend specific pairings - though this is included amply in a series of charts - but provides a formula for wine and cheese separately which encourages personal assessment and taste development. Readers are encouraged to understand why they like different flavors, for optimum pairing of the two.

Book Description
Despite the abundance of lifestyle books on the market, none meet the entertaining needs of busy young adults. Many have both financial and personal independence, and along with this come the expectation to maintain, decorate, and entertain - all of the things their parents did - with far less time. It’s Just a Dinner Party simplifies and demystifies the art of throwing a dinner party and debunks the impossible standard and craft-focus aesthetic set by Martha Stewart and other style mavens. These twenty-something professional reveal straightforward and simple techniques for party planning, relaxed etiquette, bar and menu basics, and even a few reliable recipes for any occasion. Additionally, this book is uniquely couple-focused, rather than homemaker-focused; its essence is a "guest-centric" approach that stresses simplicity, grace, and a refreshingly genuine hospitality. Includes recipes for dining and cocktail, easy and elegant table settings, invitations, and entertainment tips.
Customer Reviews:
It's just insulting!.......2004-07-20
I am rating this book a 0. The book is a complete waste of ink (and film - the photos appears to have been taken by an elementary school graduate of photography). It's written by a couple of unsophisticated authors who really don't know how to throw a party, but pretend they do. Every sentence is an insult and the tone of the book is haughty, obnoxious, and goofy. How many times do I need to reminded to throw out the thrash after the party? Or better yet, on some pages, before the party??? Next time I decide to waste money on a book, it will on a Martha Stewart publication sans insults and corny jokes.
I would give this book to an enemy just to torture them.
written by Captain Obvious.......2004-07-19
Who are these people, and why do they think they have something to teach me about style?? Other than stating the obvious about entertaining, this is basically a book about how fabulous these unsophisticated people think they are. The material would have been more appropriate for their personal webpage than a book people pay good money for. And apparently they were personally slighted by Martha at some point!
Unsophisticated and annoying!.......2003-05-12
The authors mistakenly believe the reader would be interested in ad nauseum details of their personal partying! Nothing new or inspired in this tiny book.
Simple, Encouraging and Likeable.......2002-05-03
I like this book very much.
I find its message of relaxing and enjoying entertaining while treating your guests well to be encouraging, positive, and hard to find fault with.
The basics covered are helpful and while sure, some is just common sense, I know far too many people who let common sense fly directly out the window when it comes to entertaining! (Honestly, I can't count how many invitations I've received that are missing vital information or have vague dress instructions... Or how many times I've had to introduce myself to other guests, or witnessed hosts panic over spilled red wine...) -- Basic, common sense advice may seem pedantic or even unnecessary to some, but I think common sense never goes out of style and is perfectly appropriate in this type of primer.
I found the writing style pleasant and encouraging and like the simple photos mostly of people (although the paper quality is fairly low so the photos look a little grainy ....
On the whole, I appreciate this book, the basics it covers and its encouraging, refreshing message. It's especially ideal for anyone nervous about or new to entertaining. This book shares the basics of entertaining while encouraging readers to have fun, be kind and embrace their own personal style.
A GREAT BASIC BOOK ON ENTERTAINING.......2002-05-02
I just bought this great, little book and I LOVE it! It is a great starter book for people who are uncomfortable about entertaining in their own homes/apartments. Obviously, this is not for the experienced entertainer.
The recipes are super and easy to make. Again, they are great for the beginning cook. Easy to follow and with simple instructions - just the thing for a bridal shower gift.
The authors make the tone of the book light, happy and a pleasant experience - just as they want your dinner party to be. I feel that it is a good primer for anyone who is unsure about giving a party - dinner, cocktails, outdoor...whatever.
The jokes are just that ... jokes. With such a light hand, they make the prep, actual giving and clean up into an easy job. The central idea - GUESTCENTRIC entertaining - is one that everyone needs to keep in mind. I love that concept - that your guests are coming to your house to enjoy your company and are not going to judge you by your food prep, centerpiece or decor! That's what friends are for. Think about it - if your guests are going to judge you - then perhaps you need new friends!
Those readers who are interested in a book that will supply BASIC information on entertaining in humorous language and easy to read/follow format will find that this is a little gem and easily worth the price!
