Book Description
The inspiring true story of two great friends, a baby hippo named Owen and a 130-yr-old giant tortoise named Mzee (Mm-ZAY). When Owen was stranded after the Dec 2004 tsunami, villagers in Kenya worked tirelessly to rescue him. Then, to everyone's amazement, the orphan hippo and the elderly tortoise adopted each other. Now they are inseparable, swimming, eating, and playing together. Adorable photos e-mailed from friend to friend quickly made them worldwide celebrities. Here is a joyous reminder that in times of trouble, friendship is stronger than the differences that too often pull us apart.

Beautiful pictures and a moving story.......2007-10-01
This excellent account of the true story of Owen and Mzee will delight any young reader. The beautiful pictures of the animals and the park are perfectly complemented by the easy-to-read text making this book a wonderful story-time resource. Though young readers may be saddened when Owen loses his mother, his adoption by Mzee will soothe any lingering concerns while teaching a powerful lesson about acceptance. This book would be an inspiring addition to any family library.
I like this book.......2007-09-08
I bought this book for my four year old neice. It is a great story of friendship with the added bonus of being a true story. There are a lot of great photos in the book and my neice really enjoyed talking about the pictures and she added some details to the book just my commenting on what she could see in the pictures. I think this is a good purchase.
Great Book for Both Kids and Adults.......2007-08-31
Such a cute book and sent in mint condition. I would recommend this book for both children and adults.
Wonderful.......2007-08-01
What a sweet story. This book makes a great gift.It is excellent for adults to share with children.
Best Book About Love for Kids.......2007-07-21
This book is beyond heartwarming...my eyes brim with tears nearly everytime I read this remarkable story about dear Owen and sweet Mzee. My girls have been inspired by this story to not just let something be...get involved if you think it's right and not to judge a situation, to think "outside the box" and see how brilliant mother-nature is! This is a survival story and WE LOVE IT! Buy it, NOW!

The thinking's not fuzzy in these board books, but the animals certainly are. Sandra Boynton's familiar furry creatures introduce simple concepts in this bright collection of four books, replete with clever line drawings. In Horns and Toes and In Between, three horned monsters teach the parts of the body in rhyme: "...and we have a fuzzy TUMMY that we all like to pat / and a little BELLY BUTTON in the middle of that." The Going to Bed Book gets a Noah's Ark of animals organized for bed: "They hang their towels on the wall / and find pajamas, big and small." Opposites is just that: cute animals "high and low / fast and slow / heavy and light / day and night." In the rhyming reader But Not the Hippopotamus, a hippo finds himself on the outs as "a cat and two rats are trying on hats. / But not the hippopotamus. / A moose and a goose together have juice. / But not the hippopotamus." Rest assured the hippo finds love at the end. (Baby to preschool) --Claire Dederer

Boyton Rocks!.......2007-09-24
Sandra Boyton books are always a big hit at our house-she writes some terrific children's books that all kids seem to love!
4 great books.......2007-09-03
The Going to Bed book is my son's favorite of all time and all of the books' clever sing-song rhymes make even adult readers smile- like when they all go up to exercise after they've bathed and brushed their teeth.
Pick and Choose your Boyntons.......2007-09-03
Sadly, not only our toddler (18 mos) but we parents, as readers, were disappointed in this Boynton collection, Although the title of "Greatest Hits" implied that these books were among children's favorites. We have found this not to be true. While reading the books aloud they do not have the lyrical magic of other Boynton's like "Hippos Go Berserk," "Snuggle Puppy," "Barnyard Dance, " or "Moo, Baa, La La La!." Sandra Boynton has the gift of creating language and drawings that touch children's imaginations. These books aren't the best examples of that talent. Buy Boynton, but buy other books instead of her Greatest Hits, Vol. II.
Boynton's Books.......2007-07-16
I bought these books and a 'horned'stuffed animal for a baby shower gift. I like to give books for little ones. They don't out grow them right away. Always been a fan of this author. Very funny and cute pictures.
Love this set!.......2007-03-29
I purchased this set for my 10 month old daughter. They are sturdy board books, beautifully illustrated with fun, rhythmic text. The hippo book is our absolute favorite. Highly recommended!!
Book Description
In this exciting follow-up to OWEN & MZEE, the New York Times bestselling story about an orphaned baby hippo named Owen and the 130-year-old giant turtle, Mzee, Craig Hatkoff explores the language of love, friendship, and nurturance that these two incredible creatures share with one another. This book traces their first year together, including their adorable playful ways and the unique "language" that they have developed.
Customer Reviews:
Lovely true tale .......2007-08-25
We purchased this book for our four-year-old avid book lover. While the book gives way to much info to keep a four-year-old's attention (unless they really love books), the photos are amazing and it is easy to shorten the relatable information until the child is old enough to appreciate it. Great book for reading/looking through just before going to a zoo.
Owen & Mzee a Wonderful Book.......2007-08-24
I got this book for my 4 year old niece. As an animal lover, I knew she would be charmed, but I didn't expect the adults to be so enthralled. Everyone who picks up this book gets caught up in the story and pictures. Thank you.
a marvelous story and book.......2007-08-23
The story and pictures are terrific, and the story of these unusual friends is beautifully told. A super book to own.
A lovely story kids will find involving........2007-07-10
Isabella Hatkoff, Craig Hatkoff and Dr. Paula Kahumbu's OWEN & MZEE: THE LANGUAGE OF FRIENDSHIP provides a sequel to the true story of a unique friendship between a land tortoise and a baby hippo. Photos by Peter Greste explore a special friendship in text and color images, making for a lovely story kids will find involving.
Nice one.......2007-06-02
We have enjoyed reading this book about the unusual friendship between an orphaned baby hippo and a crusty old tortoise.
The quality of the paper used and the large photo-illustrations are appealing.
The story is delightful and raises many questions, some of which are answered. It both invites the reader to marvel at the mysteries that exist in nature, and educates the reader a little about the animals concerned and conservation in general.

Super Fun.......2007-09-01
I bought this book for my husband to read to our 7 month old daughter because he gets so bored with traditional children's books. We also own other Boynton books and we have all of them memorized. I think it is important to teach children that reading is fun. If you have fun reading it, they will catch on.
great baby book.......2007-06-27
one of my one yr. old grandson's favorite books! what better review than that?
Cute but not great.......2007-05-21
I really enjoy several of Sandra Boynton's books. I and my daughter love Pajama Time, Snuggle Puppy, and Barnyard Dance. We like a few others like this one. My only complaint for this book is that it shows imodesty. I want my children to dress modestly and though these are hippos who really don't wear any clothes. Children, especially young ones don't recognize that.
oh so fun for all babes.......2007-05-19
I sent this to my grand daughter who was not even one yet, and little wee ones love rhyme and goofy phrases and with the colorful pics, it was a huge hit as were the others I sent by Sandray Boynton, what a delight and such fun to share the joy and laughter of a babe

Love Sandra Boynton.......2007-08-20
In my eyes and the eyes of my kiddos (age 14 & 37 months) Sandra Boynton can do no wrong. And this book just adds to her great collection. The book is easy to read, colorful, and a lot of fun.
Funny little book.......2007-08-12
This book is funny and cute, and my daughter (24 mons)and I love it. She likes all the animals, and I like the humor. When reading it, you can get very silly and just have fun with it.
A guaranteed favorite for you & someone special!.......2007-07-10
This is one of the first books I purchased for my niece, who will be 2 next month. This book has brought such joy! Paige associates me with this book, and she brings it to me to read at every visit. We read this book hundreds of times in the rocker when she was an infant. The sing-song rhyme was comforting, and she knows my special way of reading this to her. Now the fun part is listening to her say hippopotamus! (pee oh paw a muss :) Her copy is so beat up, but we wouldn't have it any other way! It is well worn like a favorite blanket, and has given me many wonderful evenings with Paige!
how did someone find a rhyme for hippopotamus?.......2007-05-09
That's the answer you're looking forward to as you bounce along with the rhymes of this books. It's fun and sweet, and I don't mind reading it over and over and over...
But not the two year old..........2007-04-09
My two year old shut the book as I was reading and refused to listen. I found this shocking because Boynton's books are usually a hit with my twins. He did bring it to his sister a day or two later and listened 1/2 through...so maybe the two year old...

How dull, to be one hippo all alone... until the one calls two other hippos on the phone. Soon three more hippos are at the door, bringing along another four. Before the night is through, a houseful of hippos (and one beast) has joined the one hippo for a boisterous bash.
All through the hippo night,
Hippos play with great delight.
But at the hippo break of day,
The hippos all must go away.
In clusters of nine, eight, seven, six, and so on, the hippos depart, finally leaving the one hippo "alone once more, [missing] the other forty-four."
The well-loved Sandra Boynton wrote this tribute to silliness in 1977, inspiring generations of the very young to learn to count. Lively, cute new illustrations complement this edition, with big numbers (one through nine, and nine through one) boldly placed on the corner of each page. The sturdy board book will withstand lots of eager counting fingers, and maybe even a berserk hippo or two. Boynton's familiar style can be seen in scads of other delightfully nonsensical titles, including Barnyard Dance! and Moo, Baa, La La La!. (Ages 3 to 7) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
Here is the classic Boynton counting story in a sturdy, board book version.
Perfect for travel time, bedtime, or
PARTY TIME!

Fun fun fun..........2007-09-08
I was so upset when my wife got rid of Hippos Go Berserk! that I had to get another copy. This one isn't the cute little hard-board version you might find in a children's store, but still, it's a fun story with delightful pictures. (I recall the episode on "ER" where one of the docs, to put her kid to sleep, had to recite the story to her kid over the phone--it was really charming.)
The best counting book ever.......2007-02-12
I read this to my son so many times when he was little that I memorized it. I'm so happy to see it reprinted.
My son goes berserk over "Hippos Go Berserk".......2007-02-04
A charming story about one rather bored hippo, who calls two hippos on the phone, inviting them over. As you can imagine, word spreads and soon, 44 hippos (including worker hippos and guest hippos -- both invited and unvited) are frolicking at this improptu house party. My 10 month old son squeals with glee at the sight of the climactic middle page of hippos going berserk (conditioned, in no small part, by my wife and my merriment and rejoicing at this page). The second half of the book is something of a letdown, as workers and guests depart by various and sundry modes of transport including stagecoach and hot air balloon, until finally the central hippo is alone once more contemplating his telephone.
Boynton is the best.......2007-01-04
Sandra Boynton is one of my favorite children's authors. The stories are simple and amusing. I am always amazed at how she can create conflict, memorable characters, and educational concepts in the space of a baby's board book. I always look for one of her books for baby gifts. I bought "Hippos Go Berserk" with my favorite "But Not the Hippopotamus" to give to the newest baby in our circle of friends. With one sentence per page and charming illustrations, Boynton creates a completely lovable hippopotamus with friends who keep dropping in until there are just too many; and then they start going home until finally the hippopotamus is alone again...and relieved. "Hippos Go Berserk" is a fun escape from boring counting books. If you want to buy books you AND your baby will enjoy, start your own Boynton collection with this one.
Hippos Go Berserk...comparing old and new.......2006-10-26
We're very fond of Boynton in our house and added this board book to our library after checking the original hardcover out of the library several times. The drawings have been updated, and in some cases changed entirely (e.g., 2 hippos on the phone has 2 hippos sitting on a couch together instead of in two different rooms of a cutaway house view). For the most part these updates are fine, although in some cases we happen to prefer the original drawing. In a few cases, however, we regret the alteration of details found in the original where if one looks carefully all of the hippos who arrive may be accounted for departing: the beast who arrives with the 6 hippos leaves with 9 and the four hippos who arrive wearing party hats are accounted for with the six distressed hippos and the three who say "Good day". The addition of large numbers in the corners of the pages is fine, although I wish the final page had a 44 in the corner.
Overall, Hippos Go Berserk remains rollicking good fun - short, silly and rhyming, perfect for babies and toddlers.

Book Description
This is the true story of two great friends: a baby hippo named Owen and a giant tortoise named Mzee. In December 2004 a frightened young hippo, separated from his family by the devastating tsunami in Southeast Asia, adopted an 130-year-old tortoise as his "mother." And the tortoise remarkably accepted the baby hippo as his own. Owen and Mzee are now inseparable and their story has captured hearts everywhere. With bold photographs from the original book and new simple, sweet text, Owen and Mzee is perfect for young children and families.
Customer Reviews:
LOVE THIS BOOK.......2007-05-13
This is a wonderful book for young children about friendship. It uses two animals for the story line which gets the children hooked automatically. Great way to talk about what it is to be a good friend.
Looks like they slapped this together in 15 minutes.......2007-04-26
The two stars are a gimme for how cute this story is, but blech, who put this book together? The pictures look like they were snapped with a dirty Instamatic from a mile away, and the colors are totally off (most have the faded, browned-out look of my photos from the 70's, and a few are wildly over-saturated, with poor Owen looking like a sunburnt pig). Okay, so my kid doesn't care, but the adults who made this book should.
Too Simple.......2007-03-05
Note that this book is the simplified version for babies and toddlers. It is NOT the more complex book (with the green cover) that is for older children. In my mind, there are too FEW words, even for a baby book. Also, the pictures are not very clear, often fuzzy. But it is cute to look at.
A Must Have Book for Everyone Who Has A Heart.......2007-02-16
This book will touch you in so many ways. I believe it will touch everyone who can understand the vocabulary, which would be as a read aloud all the way down to 4 yr. old, and if a parent wanted to paraphrase, probably down to 2 years old. The pictures really also tell the story, they are all real photos. It is a true story . The relationship developed between these 2 creatures is actually like a miracle. No one would ever ever have predicted that it could or would happen, so I think it gives a real heart message that there always is hope, the world has lots of good still in it (like when they worked so hard to save Owen). It says that on this planet, there is someone or something you can have a very loving relationship with that will make your life so special and it might be something or someone you could never imagine in your wildest dreams. HOpe is eternal because of love.
A happy surprise--A useful tool.......2007-02-06
Reptiles and mammals are not suppose to develop friendships, so I thought, but here it is, beautifully, amazingly described in the narrative and photos. A wonderful teaching tool for parents. I recommend that children under the age of 5 hear and see the pictures about once per month. As the child matures, the parent should draw out a happy discussion about the circumstances of Owen and then Mzee and then their union of friendship. Inspiring the imagination of young children will pay great dividends because the brain is rapidly growing in early childhood and craves sensory input and being used to set up important circuits (synapses). There can be unexpected parent-child bonding using this tool. There are more superb sermons in this book than many will see or hear in a decade.
Book Description
Set during the devastating tsunami of 2004, MAMA is the touching true story of a baby hippo that was separated from his mother when the wave hit. After struggling alone for several days, the baby was rescued by Kenyan wildlife officers and brought to live in an animal refuge. There, all by himself, he adopted a new "mother"--that just happened to be a 130-year-old giant male tortoise. And they've been inseparable ever since.
Although MAMA takes place against the backdrop of a terrible human tragedy, at the heart of this story is a moving and original tale of adoption--and of finding love and companionship in the least likely of circumstances.
Includes an author's note.
Customer Reviews:
Maybe I'm hormonal..........2007-05-20
...but every time I read this book I get teary eyed. Of course I use the word "read" loosely as there are only two words in the whole book: mama & baby.
I found this book after reading Owen and Mzee (Isabella Hatkoff) which was a short non-fiction book with photographs detailing the remarkable story of a baby hippo that lost his mom in the 2004 tsunami; he is later rescued and sent to a zoo where he is "adopted" by a giant 130 year old tortoise.
This picture book attempts to condense that incredible story in a handful of pages that are illustrated with simple and homely images using only the word "mama" to move the story line along. (There is also an author's note at the end which explains more about the true story.)
It's a pretty bold concept but I think it works. I'm still not a very big fan of the illustrations and the story is troubling but as a book it really does resonate for me and honestly I wouldn't change a thing about it. It's perfectly imperfect.
There are lots of reviewers that will argue it's a scary book thematically, but I think it's also very touching. I probably wouldn't recommend it to everyone but it's certainly one of the most moving picture books I've happened across.
I think this book may also find a welcoming home on the bookshelves of children who have themselves been misplaced from their parents and adopted by surrogates...or anyone who has tragically lost something and found it again in the unlikeliest of places.
Essentially it's a story of trauma and loss and hope and love. It's a story about life.
Sometimes Momma's are lost and baby's are placed gently in others care.......2006-11-02
To understand this book it helps to have a child placed in your classroom who has lost her momma. In my room this year is a sweet little one who lost her young momma at two. She has at 6 been placed into my hands and no day goes by that I don't feel the dissonance of realization of what this loss means for this little one. It's not easy being different than the other children, but its far worse when others cannot accept and process and care about this-preferring to "never ever speak" of such things. That's a real rejection of the experience of loss. This story is one of a baby hippo told in pictures...hippo baby goes in the world following mama, losing momma to a tsunami and then finding an old tortoise to call mama. As the journey is told through the pictures we feel the bonds of mother and child, the sadness of this tragedy, the honoring of the tragedy, the way the baby is able to go on through the disaster and be loved by another as the love of mom, our first love, is transformed into the love of a friend. This is a refugee story. In the end it is my belief we are all refugees, all searching for mother love, all looking for acceptance and love. This is a story to tell of that life journey. Absolutely poetic, absolutely charming. Children will relate, feel , learn if this is presented with love and context.....
Scary for little ones.......2006-10-19
My 1st grader said it best: "Cute pictures, but scary story!" She had tears in her eyes as she realized the Mama was gone and the baby was alone. He gets a new mama when he's rescued, but the ghostly outline of his lost mother is present on the last page. However, sometimes bad things do happen and for a parent who is interested in introducing the concept of death or losing a parent in some way, this book could be helpful. As an everyday bedtime story thought, I would say skip it. Could really worry some children.
Winter At Her Absolute Best.......2006-06-16
As a children's book librarian, I've been following Jeanette Winter's books for many years, and I have always been struck by how child-friendly they are. They are books written and illustrated for children, not for adults, and this is what makes them such welcome additions to any children's book library. With MAMA, we have the ultimate example of this. In life, even in a child's life, difficult things happen. Tsunamis happen. Hurricanes happen. Divorce happens. Rather than being told such things aren't real, children need to deal them, to process them, and in a way that provides comfort. And so it is that Winter, as a children's book author, fearlessly, and with the utmost of grace, tackles a difficult thing that really did happen, ultimately providing much hope and joy. Bravo, Ms. Winter!
A PERFECT Picture Book.......2006-06-16
This is perhaps the most beautiful and perfect picture book I have ever read. Using just two words throughout the entire text, brilliant author/illustrator Jeanette Winter conveys the most basic of all human emotions: the bond between a mother and child. This most universal of subjects is something every child will understand -- and not just understand, but feel. And with the beautiful, equally minimal illustrations depicting the big, blue ocean, this book is certain to put every child, and every parent, in a trance -- from beginning to end. And the ending is ultimately a very happy, life-affirming, love-affirming one -- that will leave most readers with a big smile tempered with tears, like the sunshine that follows, say, a tsunami.

Book Description
Fragility was a solid piece of work. But despite her sturdy exterior, Fragility was fragile. Anything and everything hurt her feelings. In the most benign compliment, Fragility heard an insult. Fragility's friends stop speaking to her for fear of another fit, but Rudy, a very rude bully, has other ideas. In the face of real insults, will Fragility finally learn to take a compliment?
Customer Reviews:
Hurty Feelings is a treasure!.......2007-09-24
We recently checked this book out of the library. I was not familiar with Helen Lester and Lynn Munsinger, but my 5 year old (and I) loved this book on the first read. The illustrations are delightful. The best part is the wonderful drama that can be injected while reading. My daughter loves all the great weeping and wailing that Fragility performs (she is a bit of a drama queen, eh?). Not only is it fun to read, it also has wonderful life lessons, such as: learning to like yourself, accepting compliments graciously, and even dealing with bullies (Rudy the bully ends up in a weeping pile himself, and he actually learns some lessons too).
I'm here today to purchase this book and any other Lester/Munsinger books I can find.
Feelings.......2007-07-14
I find that my 4 year old granddaughter really responds well to Helen Lester and Lynn Munsinger, as do I. Which made this a perfect one for talking about the feelings of her 2 year old brother.
Wonderful children's book author.......2007-06-14
Everything by Helen Lester is a pleasure to read to children, and have children read to you. The illustrations are always delightful as well.
do you have hurty feelings?.......2005-07-31
Fragility is a hippo who is very insecure. Her friends give her nice compliment but she always takes them as insults. Fragility cries all the time and her friends start to avoid her. Things change for Fragility one day when she decides to stand up to the neighborhood bully Rudy the elephant. Find out how Fragility turns her life around and learns some important like lessons.
What did you like or not like about the book?
We felt that the book could be used to start various discussions on feelings. Also the topic of bullies could be brought up as well after reading this cute picture book.
Yes. The cover shows a big hippo crying and using up boxes full of tissues.
Itdraws you in and makes you want to read to book to see what is wrong with her.
One of the best children's books of the year.......2004-10-11
This is the story of Fragility, a hippopotamus who, despite her large size, was very fragile emotionally. Even when someone complimented her she managed to reframe it into an insult and was hurt again. So what happens when she is responsible for protecting the goal in the soccer match and the bully of an elephant decides to insult her? You'll have to read the book to get the answer. "Hurty Feelings" is a fun read for children with well-drawn illustrations that are both detailed and humorous, and an excellent message, which makes it a highly recommended read.
