Knitting Enhancement.......2007-04-12
Great book!
Well written, well described, really nice ideas.
Highly recommended.
Knitting on the Edge: Ribs, Ruffles, Lace, Fringes, Floral, Points & Picots: The Essential Collection of 350 Decorateive Borders.......2007-02-06
It's OK. I bought it, but could have lived without it. The sections include: Introduction, Texture, Size, Notes, Ribs, Ruffles, Lace, Fringes, Flora, Points & Picots, Patterns, Stitches, Abbreviations, Techniques, Acknowledgments, & Recourses.
This is an excellent book for beginner or intermediate knitters. Experienced knitters would have already used many of these ideas in their self-designed knitted project. It's a nice reference book for them.
Where are the corrections????.......2006-12-18
There are many mistakes in this book...and it is poorly written. Patterns should be more clear. One person stated she couldn't find any errors...well I beg to differ with you, so far every pattern I've started has errors and have not been able to complete either project because of them. what is up with P1 P5...????? why not p6????? I do not understand that and have never seen it before....crazy
Inspiring book to use as a springboard for your knitting imagination.......2006-12-09
After much deliberation, I decided to buy the three Nicky Epstein books in this series (On the Edge, Over the Edge, Beyond the Edge). Each of these books are just gorgeous, filled with color illustrations of each border or design on glossy pages. In essence, I'll be reviewing all three of the books together, but focusing on this one since I'm currently doing a border from it.
While I'd heard of Nicky Epstein (if you're into knitting, I don't see how you couldn't!), I waited about a year before buying her books, and I'm glad I did. I needed the time to become a better knitter. I consider myself an advanced beginner or an intermediate knitter, and I don't think these are books for beginners. For one thing, they're not meant to be pattern books. There are very few patterns included in them (and the ones that are there are pretty scary looking! When I was first learning to knit I would have given up, because they're very complex-looking). The author assumes that her audience would know how to do some of the more advanced stitches used in her border patterns, and that they would also have some experience under their belt to figure out how to use her borders in bigger projects like sweaters or blankets or whatever.
That being said, I'm taking a star off because it's really hard to find errata for this book on the internet. I had to do some searching before I found a scant two or three corrections on the Vogue Knitting website. I spent two days working and reworking a specific border (the Serendipity, p.83) before I realized that the numbers the author had listed for how many stitches the pattern worked over were wrong. As I continued in the pattern, I found other number errors in it. When I looked for corrections, I couldn't find any for that specific pattern. Since I know this book has been out for a while, I would hope that all the pattern errors would have been worked out in later printings. Other than that, a great book and totally worth the money.
Some mistakes not the fault of the author........2006-09-12
Sometimes not being able to work a pattern doesn't mean the book has a mistake. For instance, p.139 "Butterfly" does not have different numbers of stitches on each row. Notice that "Embossed Hearts" on the same page ends each row differently worded than does "Butterfly." If not read carefully, "Butterfly" would seem to say do the repeat as many times as required, then knit #. But it says to "end last rep k#." So the last repeat of each row ends with a different number of knit stitches than the other repeats in the row. I counted it out and it works.
I also checked several more throughout the book in response to another review that said the first row always required more stitches than were cast-on. In the couple dozen that I checked, none were wrong.
I understand this book has errors. But we must not be blind to our own and instead blame the author.

Customer Reviews:
The way movies SHOULD NOT be........2003-12-30
This book may help you in the format of a script but little else. I am disgusted by the materials that are used in this book as examples for a film script. If this is the normal way movies are made than I guess I am off the wall. I am really ashamed to call myself a filmmaker and be associated with such vile evils. There are many other ways to learn script formatting, just look for it in software form. If you want to write a film that will damage our societies moral standards and cause our nation to go into further more turmoil, this book is for you. Yet if you want our society to become a place where our lives reflect good and Godly attributes, then by all means don't even consider this book!
a good book for starters.......2000-08-07
if your a begining screenwriter and want to understand the basics of screenwriting, you shouol pick this up.I'ts not the best book for starters but it helps a lot.it pretty much teaches you the basics like format, structure, charater, and dialogue. It also has exercises for you to work on as you go along but i would recommend reading the book first and then going back to do the exercises.there are dozen's of screenwriting books out there and this ranks as an ok one.there are better ones out there.
A handy reference for those interested in movies........2000-01-01
I remember growing up as a kid wanting to go to Hollywood, Write a movie script and make millions. If only I had read Screenwriting 101, I might have been able to succeed.
This book will show you, in an easy to understand and almost lighthearted way, the steps to becoming a great screenwriter. You have to make sure you have something to take notes with as you read along.
The author includes scribble exercises scattered throughout the book, this requires you to write what you are thinking at that time. Since this book is made to use over again your responses will change - have the eraser handy! Written by someone who has worked on 2 number 1 box office hits only add to an already great book. Whether you want Hollywood to notice you or your local theater group this book will certainly come in handy.
Lucid, pragmatic, and entertaining primer on screenwriting........1999-09-08
Terrific book. A lucid, pragmatic and entertaining primer on screenwriting, as valuable for veterans as it is for newcomers. Hicks has been there, in the Hollywood trenches, and knows what he's talking about. Having been in those same trenches myself, I wish I'd had this informative guide to provide helpful hints and straight talk about the craft of writing films.
If you want to write a successful screenplay, read this book.......1999-08-31
I love this book. I am a working screenwriter with ten films to my credit, including two Number One hits. If this book had been available when I started my career, I would have been able to save myself a ton of headaches and heartaches. Neill Hicks has done a huge favor to screenwriters everywhere with this new book. I find his approach to be extremely sensible and realistic...IF you are interested in writing a solidly crafted screenplay that has the highest potential for getting sold--and made.

Making Jewelry.......2007-09-01
This book by Joanna Golberg is excellent. It is very complete from the very basics through step-by-step instructions for doing the projects and it's clear & easy to read text. I'm anxious to start on some of the projects.
novice metalsmith.......2007-03-11
This book is wonderful. The directions are clear. The illustrations and suggestions are excellent. I am very glad to have this book as a reference.
Best in Class.......2006-05-14
This is really the best beginner-intermediate level jewelry making book that I have seen so far. Whereas most instructional books consist mainly of hideous jewelry designs that they demonstrate how to make, this book is a "survey" (of sorts) of the different techniques, with many examples of truly beautiful jewelry that were made with each technique. Inspiring, yet achievable.
If you are a beginner, or would like to extend your skill set, this is really the best bet for the buck.
WONDERFUL!.......2006-05-06
The beauty of this book is that it shows the technique and then shows outstanding artists work using this technique. The best book I have and I have lots.

So many books to choose from.......2007-09-26
I finally made a decision on a book and I am very happy that I chose this one. It has been easy to follow where other sewing books make learning complicated. The patterns were fun and now I have new pillows for my couch and bed and with christams coming up, they'll be perfect gifts. love sewing!.......2007-09-25
I'm learning to sew and have found the most fabulous books. This happens to be my favorite. It's no B.S. Other books I have show how to construct garments but this book is really good at explaining how to do more of the basic sewing skills. I didn't know that there was a certain way of cutting fabric out so that the garment will fit properly. You have to crawl before you can run and this book will get you through crawling and walking and into running. I'm a big fan of Sew Fast Sew Easy. Here are some other books that have been realy helpful:

Highly Recomended.......2007-09-18
My friend who is a fashion designer highly recomended this book to help get me sewing and he was right on with it. This book has been great in helping me get comfortable with my machine and to understand how to read and lay patterns. I enjoyed sewing the projects in this book as well. They weren't too hard to understand and it helped give me the confidence to sew and it wasn't frustrating so I wanted to keep sewing and find new projects to work on. I would recomend this book to anyone that wants a relaxing and easy time learning to sew. I'm also going to check out the Rip It! book too for more tailoring tips and creative project ideas.

What a nice surprise!.......2007-09-11
I recieved a copy of Sew Fast Sew Easy from Amazon on Friday. I'm a patternmaker and I bought the book since it seemed like the best one for my grandaughter. I looked it over and liked what I saw. It's right on with appropriate beginner projects. The goal is to encourage, not discourage their efforts (with projects beyond them) so they'll enjoy creating and keep sewing! The Rip It! book is also a great book for beginner projects.

Book Description
Calligraphy enthusiasts can expand their horizons and augment their repertory of scripts with this detailed excursion into the method of creating beautifully inscribed Chinese characters. Organized into sections, this book presents Chinese characters that embrace a diversity of themes, including peace, happiness, love, long life, and many others. Each of 300 characters is presented with an explanation of its meaning and a note on how it is pronounced. Clear, step-by-step directions show beginning students exactly how to render the series of strokes which, when combined, create each elegant Chinese character. The author lists all necessary tools and materials, which include different kinds of paper, brushes and brush stands, paperweights, ink sticks, and ink stones. A chapter titled Gallery of Chinese Calligraphy presents many examples of traditional and contemporary Chinese calligraphic art from a variety of renowned artists. A glossary defines all items and terms that are cited in the book.
Customer Reviews:
Gets you going in the right direction.......2007-09-28
This is a beautiful book for beginning and intermediate Chinese calligraphy practice. Each character is given stroke by stroke, and there are many helpful hints about the best execution of the strokes. The information is quite good on materials (brushes, papers, inks, inkstones, etc), their proper use, and suppliers. There is even a section at the end about how to paint bamboo and some flowers. The spiral binding is covered by the book's spine, which is nice, because on the bookshelf the spine shows a title, unlike many other spiral-bound books. And the spiral binding allows the book to lay open flat as you practice your characters. I had no idea, though, that it would take so much practice time for one simple stroke to look like it's supposed to. You will definitely develop patience and discipline if you are a Westerner serious about wanting to learn Chinese calligraphy. I haven't seen a better book to get you started, and many of the characters you can learn here are inspirational, like the characters for "Love," "Peace," "Friendship," and so on. When you get good at them, you can make beautiful things to hang on your walls or give to friends. The book shows you the proper method of mounting your work for display. Later, when your brushwork is more refined and you know the order of the strokes, you can look for a more comprehensive book of Chinese characters if you want to write longer, more complex thoughts.
Misleading title.......2007-07-23
The most interesting part of this book is Chapter one: Getting started, which gives information on supplies.
The characters themselves are written in the author's semi-cursive and highly personal style. They are not always legible, at least for the beginner who buys this book. I can't say I find her style very attractive. A printed version of the characters should have been included.
A clearer, much more legible and informative list of characters can be found in "Reading and writing Chinese", by William McNaughton and Li Ying. Stroke order is also included.
I don't recommend this book.
So, you want to be a doofus..........2007-03-18
So, you want to be a doofus...? Well, this book is for you. I do not know how goofs have asked me for Chinese characters that could be tattooed all over their body, guaranteeing them minimum wage jobs without benefits for their entire lives. Never mind that it is nearly impossible for anyone not fluent in the written language to put together a meaningful phrase that is not total gibberish...or worse! Luckily most folks who are fluent in Chinese are too polite to laugh in their face. So, you don't want a tattoo? This is also a good reference book for calligraphers who merely wish to brighten up an invitation or thank you or for a student to add a bit of dash to a Chinese culture poster. Also, a good acquisition for public libraries. Folks who enjoy abusing their skin may also enjoy "Gothic and Old English Alphabets: 100 Complete Fonts" by Dan X. Solo.
