Outstanding Resource!.......2005-07-20
Though I've been a middle school coach for the past 12 years, I still am interested in getting new ideas to get my young actors/ actresses more involved with the drama process. I also taught a 3 week long Creative Drama class this summer with 3rd-5th graders and the many sound ideas in this book gave me a wealth of activities to choose from.
Whether you're a first time Drama Coach or a long in the tooth coach like me, this book is a MUST BUY! I particularly like how the authors used "famous actor" quotes to help back up the many acting activities in this book. I love the chapter entitled "Rehearsals with Heart" because this idea of treating young actors as people with talents to share comes shining through in EACH chapter! The "Leader's Guide" (near the end of the book) lays out a 10 session "suggested" guide for the novice or the veteran drama person to follow (wonderful idea!)
In a nutshell, THIS BOOK ROCKS and I've now got even MORE ideas to use with my kids when the spring production rolls around this year!
Well Done!
Ralph :)
Lenka puts actions into words.......2001-10-03
I read this book after receiving it at a conference that Lenka Peterson spoke at. In reading the book, I realized that she had put most of the information covered in an 8-hour session plus enough to fill another week of 8-hour sessions. The book truly takes actions and in-person teaching lessons and makes them readily available to anyone anywhere.
Helping Young People Discover Theater.......1999-08-19
In this wonderful new book, Lenka Peterson and Dan O'Connor draw on more that 30 years of experience to reveal how to teach and direct plays with children. Their sophisticated yet accessible guide covers everything form the basics of acting to mounting and staging a production. It includes plenty of child-friendly sample scenes and relaxation techniques for kids. Perfect for established children's theater groups as well as churches, schools and camps, Kids Take the Stage shows how we can help kids realize their creative potential...and, in the process, create a new generation of theater lovers.

Bravo!.......1999-08-15
This is a magical book, full of exercises and anecdotes that teach children to celebrate what they have to offer as potential artists, but mainly as human beings. I recommend it to anyone who wants to introduce children to acting and the theater. It is joyful, rewarding, wise and a lot of fun to read. Bravo/Brava!

Product Description
Shakespeare was, as Caesar says of Cassius, "a great observer," able to see and depict patterns of events and character. He understood how politics is shaped by the clash of men with various colorings of self-interest and idealism, how violence breeds violence, how fragile human beings create masks and disguises for protection, how schemers do the same for advancement, how love can grow out of hate and hate out of love.
Dare anyone say that these insights are irrelevant to living in the real world? For many in an older generation, the Bible and the Collected Shakespeare were the two indispensable books, and thus their sense of life and history was shaped by the best and best-told stories. And they were the wiser for it.
Literature abstracts from the complex events of life (just as we all do in everyday life) and can reveal patterns that are like the patterns of events in the real world. Studying literature can give us sensitivity to those patterns. This sensitivity to the rhythm of life is closely connected with what the Bible calls wisdom.

My kids love Shakespeare!.......2004-10-28
And one of the reasons for that is this book, Brightest Heaven of Invention. It is a wonderful guide to read along with your next Shakespeare play. It explains the scenes from a unique perspective--a must-have book for Shakespeare fans! Mr. Leithart, we're waiting for the next book in this series.
eye-opening.......2000-06-14
I appreciated this book for its Christian perspective on a few of my favorite Shakespeare plays. The author explored not only the plots, but also the characters' relationships to Christ. The author made insightful parallels and comparisons between the characters and Christ and His church. I also appreciated the critiques of some of the film versions of the plays. I heartily recommend this eye-opening book!

Teatro a hit with elementary students.......2000-05-19
Teatro is a wonderful collage of Hispanic stories from the Southwest. Although said to be written for middle school and up, elementary school students will enjoy reading about another culture's collection of stories. It is very clearly written and enjoyable to all. Gives a good taste multiculturalism!
Book Description
With over two hundred dramatic situations, this volume is by far the most extensive sourcebook available for nurturing young actors' improvisational work. The range is vast. Sandra Caruso includes everything from beloved classics to folk and fairy tales to modern realism and contemporary stories, facilitating improvisational work of equal variety. Additionally, the book structures situations in such a way that children work in greater depth than theatre games usually require. Teachers, parents, directors, and producers can focus on actors' development, helping children release interesting and unexpected shades of characterization and uncover unexplored psychological depths.
While many books on creative drama are geared to a younger age group, this book is divided into two volumes to address a broad range of students, from childhood to adolescence. The material has increasing degrees of complexity and can be used with any young actor, whatever his or her level of experience.

Brings you inside the characters.......2001-08-17
This book was excellent. It really makes you think and go inside the character. It would be a perfect total of five stars if it had more improvisation ideas for one person. Other than that, it great. I really liked it, and if you take a drama class, I recommend you bring it with you for the whole class to share--but make sure nobody tries to [take] it!

Desperate? Need a scene? Get something else..........2002-12-05
"Relevant" is the wrong word to describe this book. I would describe it more as "stereotypical" if I were creating the title. The scenes are all about the self-centered, hormone-driven, culture-obsessed teen that exists only in extreme conditions. If you really need a scene and want to show your audience what "today's shallow teen" would be like, use this book. I suggest you find something with more depth and meaning. This might as well be titled "Deranged Perspectives: Stereotypical Scenes for the Stereotypical Teen" by Mary "I should have majored in something else" Krell-Oishi. Sorry, Mary. I wish I kept the receipt.

Customer Reviews:
Loved the play.......2000-10-11
No, I haven't read the book. I saw the play put on by The Shakespeare Theater in Washington. Tessa Auberjonois was an absolute darling in the title role; you couldn't help but feel glad for Margery's odd-but-happy ending.
If Wycherley was no Shakespeare, he did this sort of play better than the Bard. Nothing is quotable, the characters are one dimensional and only the "China" scene got real laughs. But Wycherley did a neat and nasty take on Restoration mores and made it enjoyable, too.
Wycherley: a man, a genius.......1999-05-11
Far from being a silly comedy, The Country Wife is a work aimed at lashing Seventeenth Century loose morals. We laugh, of course, but through the alluring yet disturbing character of Horner, we perceive that something must be done if Restoration society wants to survive.
Wicherley presents us with unhappy wives and brutal or indifferent husbands who are utlimately fooled by Horner, the man who knows how to exploit the misery produced by mercenary unions. Poor Margery Pinchwife, the heroine of the piece, eventually brings tears in our eyes when we realize that she shall never be free from a violent man that considers marriage a cheaper substitute for keeping a mistress. Margery is the victim of both her husband and her careless lover. She is looking for love, but she keeps on coming across men who are interested in sex only. They can see her body; they can't see her delicate, naif soul.
However, Whycherley (who, we must remember, was the spiritual son of the great moralists Graciàn, Larochefoucault and so on, whose maxims are easily detected in the whole bulk of Wycherley's works) is able to see a way out in the honest, disintrested love between Alithea, Margery's brilliant sister-in-law, and Harcourt, Horner's dashing best friend. (these characters' names symbolize the perfection of their union: her name means "truth", while his name is significantly "Frank".)
This comedy is at its best when performed; however, it is well worth reading, especially if you have a lively imagination. don't miss the notorious "china scene": fifteen minutes of laughter that will make your sides ache.
Be careful: The Country Wife merely "looks" like a stupid, shallow comedy, but it is in fact a deep reflection on society, marriage and, why not?, even the situation of Seventeenth-Century English women.
This is a brilliant Restoration Comedy........1999-03-12
I recently reread this play for the third time and taught it in a British Literature survey at the University of Texas. Not only do I find it more entertaining and more brilliant with every reading, but I was shocked to find that the vast majority of my students really enjoyed it and preferred Wycherley to Shakespeare. If you want a smart, hilarious, and dark comedy that plumbs the depths of jealousy and sexual possession, this is a must-read play. If you're easily offended or have a hard time following complicated plots and catching bawdy puns, you'll certainly want to avoid it.
Witty yet ultimately shallow.......1999-03-09
I have to study this play for my 'A'-levels, and would like to inform readers that this play is NOT worth reading. It is filled to bursting with sexual innuendo and crude, cheap jokes. There are main issues that could be brought out, such as deception, relationships and the function of society, but Wycherley fails to ever reach any firm moral standing on any of these points. The play is ultimately hollow of its concepts and is certainly not worth the effort.
A pointed satire -- well worth reading........1998-12-15
TCW is worth your effort, particularly if you enjoy a good laugh

Invaluable resource for drama teachers!.......2000-06-21
I was delighted with the wealth of information based on real life experience. Ms Poisson does not merely throw out theory, she delivers proven techniques and usable ideas for the individual teaching or contemplating teaching drama on the high school level. After taking this book out of the public library and reading it, I knew that I would have to own it because it will be an invaluable resource throught my teaching career!

An illuminating work and a great handbook.......2007-03-28
This a a refreshing, true hands on gathering of information, just chuck full of great exercises for bringing out the best in those affected by Asperger's Syndrome. Martinovich shares her in depth knowledge very freely, with a keen understanding of what makes these individuals tick, and then follows with terrific activities that are well thought out, truly creative, and actually fun! Therapists, counselors, parents and individuals with Aspergers traits are fortunate to benefit from the brilliance that has brought this comprehensive enlightenment of very workable tools together in such an intelligent and pleasurable way. The book will become an indispensible handbook referred to and used time and time again. Judy's creative spirit is quite remarkable, and her point is that creative effort is the cornerstone for working with this remarkable population. I am a parent of a child with Asperger's, and I wish every teacher and therapist can be sparked with the enthusiasm and energy that Judy has to share. I am grateful for this wonderful work, and the processes in this book will greatly enhance therapist's or counselors experience in working with those who present Asperger's traits.
A Great Resource.......2006-02-12
As a person with Asperger syndrome, this book won brownie points with me straight off when it says in the intro. "The Asperger perspective is just as valid as the non-Asperger perspective". I found the approach described here refreshing and interesting and I wish that I could have gone somewhere to take part in these sorts of activities when I was an adolescent... they actually sound like they would have been quite fun as well as helpful. I'm not a teacher, or a social worker, or a psychologist, and I don't know what you would be looking for in a book like this, but it seems to me like it has got loads of well thought out and explained activities, so I would be surprised if it were to disappoint.
