    Product Description

Like a magic carpet whisking us back in time, quilts stitch our past to the present. They record community and family history by memorializing lost loved ones, welcoming new members to our tribe, smiling upon new marriages or celebrating an anniversary or graduation. Like Judy Howard's previous two Heavenly Patchwork books which won First Places in regional competition, Centennial Stitches inspires and entertains as it transports you into the lives and hearts of pioneer and contemporary women. Rejoice or cry with those who homesteaded Oklahoma's hostile and barren landscape, struggled to survive and nurture their families through the Great Depression and Dust Bowl Days or currently cope with our fast-paced society. These stories will renew your hope and inspire your faith in God. They show how everyday heroines stitch true tales of courage against insurmountable obstacles into heart-warming patchwork. Centennial Stitches tells the larger story of God's faithfulness to sustain, comfort and strengthen women through hardships. Included in this full color, coffee-table gift book are the eighty Oklahoma Centennial Quilt Contest winners, and a sampling of fifty 1800's treasured legacy quilts homesteaders brought with them in covered wagons to bring beauty and comfort to their first sod dug-outs and log cabins. Celebrate Oklahoma's unique history as seen through the eyes of our pioneer women in this full color limited collectors edition of 128 pages. All book profits go to non-profits who provide quilts for orphans, sick babies and victims of disasters--all those most in need of the touch of God's love and comfort quilts represent. Quantity discounts available for fund-raising. See www.HeavenlyPatchwork.com, 405-751-3885

5 out of 5 stars Centennial Stitches and Oklahoma's centennial.......2007-05-23

This book has a collection of color photos of quilts connected with Oklahoma and its history. Some of the quilts presented in this book are as old or older as Oklahoma and some have connections with Oklahoma historical personages. Some of the quilts provide history lessons of the state or of families from Oklahoma. Some of the quilts have stories about the quilts and the makers with the quilt. Some have photos of the creators of them.

There are three parts to this book: Part one is entitled, Oklahoma history stitched in quilts. Part two is of the McCloy's Masterpiece collection which is very colorful. Part three is the Oklahoma centennial quilt contest winners. Winners are of various ages.

There are scripture quotes at the end of each entry description.

There is a table of contents at the front of the book.

The book is very colorful and a great keepsake for the Oklahoma centennial. Oklahomans interested in quilts, Oklahoma history will want to get this book. Quilt lovers too will want this book.

I purchased this book in memory of my deceased Grandmother who was a quilter. She would have loved the book.

Get ready for another 500+ pages of non-stop non-team action! Essential Defenders vol. 2 collects 16 more issues of The Defenders, plus five crossover issues, four giant-size stories, and a Marvel Treasury featuring Howard the Duck. Beginning with a throwaway issue of Giant-Size Defenders 1 (which is mostly reprints anyway), the real Defenders arc starts in issue 15, with the now-settled lineup of Dr. Strange, Valkyrie (except when she's off in search of her identity), Nighthawk, and (usually) Hulk (Silver Surfer being completely gone and the Sub-Mariner almost completely). They face Magneto and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants in their quest to create the ultimate mutant; the Wrecking Crew with the help of Luke Cage, Power Man; and the Sons of the Serpent in an all-out war that swells the non-team roster as never before.

Particularly welcome are the Giant-Size issues, which feature a meeting with the Son of Satan, a confrontation alongside Daredevil with the games-playing Grandmaster, a development in Nighthawk's personal life that leads to a meeting with Yellowjacket and then a faceoff with the Squadron Sinister, and a meeting with the super-cool Guardians of the Galaxy that brings the Defenders to the 30th century to free the human race from the clutches of the Badoon. This 1974-76 run of Defenders was mostly written by Len Wein and Steve Gerber, with the bulk of the pencils by Sal Buscema, and this edition, like all of Marvel's Essentials, is printed in black and white. --David Horiuchi

Essential Defenders Volume II: from the very start (the confrontation with Magneto and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants in issues 15 and 16, by far the best ones there) to the ending (Tapping Tommy and the Maggia goons in issue 30) it's a hit!!! Fine storytelling and artwork (especially by a certain Mr. Buscema), rather interesting characters and the "non-team status" that made this a supergroup different from all the others catch your attention and manage never to lose it. Looking forward to Volume III.

4 out of 5 stars More fun with Marvel's non-team.......2007-04-22

In the Marvel Universe, the big three superhero teams are the Fantastic Four, the Avengers (including various incarnations like West Coast Avengers) and the X-Men (with related teams X-Force, Excalibur, etc.). There were other teams also, and of those, my favorite has always been the Defenders, the "non-team" that had its heyday in the 1970s and `80s and is probably the biggest second-tier team (the Champions and Infinity Watch are definitely less memorable).

Essential Defenders Volume 2 begins to really give the team its identity. In previous issues, it featured several heavy hitters (the Silver Surfer, Sub-Mariner, Hulk and Dr. Strange), all of whom were not team players. Eventually, as this volume kicks in, the Silver Surfer and Sub-Mariner have gone their separate ways and have been replaced by Valkyrie and Nighthawk. It's these new heroes who help give the team more character. Also, this volume features the beginning of Steve Gerber's writing run; Gerber, also the creative force behind Howard the Duck, would give the Defenders a little bit of an off-beat quality (although, admittedly, this happens more in later issues).

In this set, the Defenders take on several big villains like Magneto, the Enchantress and the Badoon, along with lesser know villains like the Sons of the Serpent and Tapping Tommy. There are plenty of guest heroes too, including Son of Satan, Luke Cage, Spiderman, the Human Torch, the Thing, Daredevil and the Guardians of the Galaxy.

While it might be too much to say that this is really great writing and art, most of the material is at least good and it's all fun reading. For another look at what made Marvel entertaining thirty years ago, this is a good book to pick up.

5 out of 5 stars A lighthouse in social science.......2001-04-05

This book begins with a dilemma around a group of men, caught in a cave by falling rocks. Starved of food they have to decide whether cannibalism would be acceptable. Douglas argues that there is no universal solution to this dilemma and that the different possible outcomes depend on the instituional relationships among the individuals.

Mary Douglas admits in the early chapters of the text that this is the book she should have written first. Many of her earlier books, including Purity and Danger and Natural Symbols attracted critical acclaim but failed to make her theoretical orientations explicit. Her approach is in a minority position in contemporary social science and is informed by the sociology of Durkheim as practiced in anthropology in the first half of this century.

As with all of her books, HIT is a great pleasure to read and she illuminates critical academic concerns with in a voice that is engaging. The book was written as a response to Olson's 'Logic of Action' and so focuses on demonstrating the contrary position that collective action does have rational foundations.

This is a short text which serves as a useful introduction. It is impossible to understand the breadth of Douglas' profound insights without also reading 'Implicit Meanings', 'Purity and Danger' and 'Risk and Blame'.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent and Comprehensive Resource.......2007-08-01

Anyone familiar with special education or child mental health knows how few real "tools" there are in the box to deal with children who are emotionally disturbed and/or behaviorally disordered. This book provides the reader with some extremely HELPFUL approaches, and is highly recommended.

First, the book provides an overview of the "conflict cycle," one that rightfully places the adult in the transaction between the child in crisis, and his/her social environment. It provides a perspective on helping that is practical, and rarely seen in the professional literature. It helps adults understand what to do -- and what not to do -- when a child is agitated, upset, angry or explosive.

Second, the book provides an in-depth description of Life Space Crisis Intervention (LSCI) in its various manifestations. It locates LSCI within the conflict cycle, and gives the reader solid techniques for helping a troubled child come to terms with his or her distorted thoughts and maladaptive emotional and behavioral reactions. It does not hold out LSCI as a panacea or as "THE ANSWER." Rather, the authors communicate their understanding of the fact that working with troubled children and youth involves commitment, concerted effort, and that in helping, one size never fits all.

In the opinion of this reviewer, this book belongs on the shelves of all aspiring and practicing teachers, educational administrators, psychologists, social workers, nurses and psychiatrists who work with ED/BD children, as well as in the hands of line staff in agencies and residences for such children.

    3 out of 5 stars O.K textbook.......2007-04-03

This book was required for a course. Shipped quickly but was damaged from amazon. Amazon did issue a small refund becaue I kept it. The chapters are somewhat tedious, however it covers a lot of information about crisis interventions.

    Book Description

From its trademark row houses to Benjamin Henry Latrobe's landmark Cathedral (now Basilica) of the Assumption, Baltimore architecture can rightly claim to be as eclectic, exciting, and inspiring as that of any American city. Many of its important buildings figure prominently in the oeuvres of leading American architects: Latrobe, Robert Mills, Maximilien Godefroy, Richard Upjohn, Stanford White, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe among them. Yet Baltimore's distinctive urban environment also owes much to the achievements of local talents, including Robert Cary Long Sr. and Jr., John Rudolph Niernsee and James Crawford Neilson, E. Francis Baldwin and Josias Pennington, Laurence Hall Fowler, Alexander Cochran -- not to mention generations of skilled craftsmen and builders.

Baltimore's architecture rewards close study, and in The Architecture of Baltimore contributors and editors Mary Ellen Hayward and Frank R. Shivers, Jr., have brought together an impressive group of scholars, writers, and critics to provide a fresh account of the city's architectural history. The narrative begins by looking at eighteenth-century Georgian buildings that reflect the grandeur of the style, goes on to the prosperous port city's Federal-period achievements, including many country houses with their delicate details, then proceeds to Baltimore's monumental contributions to early nineteenth-century American neoclassical design. Romantic stylings follow, with excursions into the Greek and Gothic Revivals, and the popular Italianate-mode for town and country houses, the soaring spires of churches, and the classical dignity of public spaces like the Peabody Library. Later in the nineteenth century a picturesque eclecticism produced such monuments as the Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad's Mount Royal Station, as well as intriguing changes to the city's versatile row houses. Contributors discuss the evolution of industrial buildings and the growth of the city's architectural profession. The Architecture of Baltimore also addresses the arrival of modernism in Charm City, examines the origins and challenges of historic preservation, and assesses the Baltimore renaissance of the period 1955-2000, which saw the construction of Charles Center, Harborplace, and the sports complex at Camden Yards.

Here at last we have a comprehensive guide to Baltimore's architectural heritage -- lost and still-standing alike. Illustrated with nearly 600 photographs, architectural plans, maps, and details, this impressive work of scholarship also offers an engaging narrative of the history of Baltimore itself -- its men and women of all stations, its taste and traditional preferences, its good choices and lamentable ones, and its built environment as a social and cultural chronicle.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Eye of the Independent.......2001-05-19

She called herself one of the Independents. The world remembers her as the Impressionist who painted "The Boating Party," the choice for a first-class U.S. postage stamp and one of the most widely reproduced paintings. She was behind America's first purchase of Impressionist art: a Degas painting. In fact, friend and mentor Edgar Degas advised her on the farther window light and floor for "Little Girl in an Armchair" and praised "Girl Arranging her Hair," the Japanese woodblock print inspired "Bath," and "Mother and Boy."

The book's first plate, "The Bacchante," lets viewers know what MARY CASSATT: PAINTINGS AND PRINTS were all about: women communicating with others and hinting at states of mind behind beautifully lighted and shaded fabrics, such as "Woman with a Red Zinnia"; flesh, such as the swiftly scribbled modeling to "Mother, Young Daughter and Son"; and furnishings, such as the Opera House banquette and chandelier ovals taking up the ovals from the figure and reflected figure of her sister "Lydia Leaning on her Arms, Seated in a Loge." Art critic and historian Frank Getlein backs his well-written text with 72 well-chosen plates. His book and Griselda Pollock's MARY CASSATT: PAINTER OF MODERN WOMEN give the perfect examples for Michel Melot's THE IMPRESSIONIST PRINT, Paul Smith's IMPRESSIONISM, Gary Tinterow's ORIGINS OF IMPRESSIONISM, and Helene Barbara Weinberg et al's AMERICAN IMPRESSIONISM AND REALISM.
