Expected More Content.......2007-09-07
1. For a novice mosaic artist, the encyclopedic format of techniques might be frustrating. As a resource book, it seems the user would be better served if the info was organized according to categories & sequentially, rather than alphabetically.
2. A more experienced mosaic artist will expect a great deal more content in a book entitled "encyclopedia". I would be willing to pay more for a seriously comprehensive book on this subject.
3. More historical references, with photos of ancient mosaics, would be a logical addition. There were references to these, but only a few examples. In one case, a highly descriptive reference is made to a Roman mosaic of a woman, but no photo? Photos of ancient mosaics are great sources of inspiration for projects.
4.Some of the references to ceramic tile are misleading. This book isn't meant to be a tile encyclopedia, but we should use the correct terms for the tiles used in mosaic art work. For instance; beginning on Types of Tesserae page 28, the mosaic tesserae that are identified throughout the book as Unglazed Ceramic & Glazed Ceramic, are, in fact, Unglazed Porcelain Ceramic and Glazed Porcelain Ceramic, respectively. On the same page, Glazed Ceramic Tile is identified correctly. This could create confusion to those unfamiliar with types of tile and their intended use.
There is a big difference between Porcelain Tile and Ceramic Tile.
Porcelain tile is composed of the same basic elements (clay) as ceramic tile, but has added minerals and slightly different production methods that make it much more dense & durable than ceramic tile. Porcelain tile is produced unglazed or glazed; and is generally used for high traffic and exterior applications because of its durability.
Generally speaking, ceramic tile is made of clay and it is almost always glazed - the "body" of ceramic tile just isn't usually sturdy enough or attractive enough to be left un-glazed. Glazed tiles are often decorative and can be handpainted with glazes, resulting in an endless variety of available designs & colors.
There are misleading statements with regard to the stain resistance of ceramic tile. Glazed Ceramic Tile does not stain (that's one point of the impervious glass glaze), unless the glazed surface is seriously compromised in some manner by age or wear. In this case, staining agents could migrate beneath the glaze through fractures in the glaze and cause staining under the glaze.
Unglazed porcelain mosaic tiles can stain if left unsealed, because they are not protected by a kiln fired glass glaze.
Perhaps some of the confusion is related to cultural differences between the American English and British English languages. British & American terminology on the subject of tile does seem to differ slightly. An American reader could misinterpret.
Always research the tile you plan to use for your projects, especially on commissioned projects. Don't rely on craft "how to" books for your information. Ask the dealer/distributor or manufacturer for product specifications and ask what the features & limitations are for the tile - areas of concern: frost resistance (exterior), water absorption (pools/spas), glazed or unglazed (dirt & oil resistance). This information is available in product brochures and on mfr websites - look for technical data.
5. There is an over abundance of projects using glass - perhaps the authors favorite medium.
6. Photos of finished projects (making templates, etc) in addition to the small step by step photos, would be very useful to help visualize the objective of the project.
Encyclopedia of Mosaic Techniques review.......2007-03-28
This book is one that should be on the shelf of any and all mosaic artists. More likely, they will be found in use on desktops and workshops. From some basic history of mosaic art to actual technique and fundamental information for creating your own mosaic masterpiece, this book has it all. I loved the many images that were inspirational and informative. Overall, I loved this book and would recommend to artists interested in mosaic.
Best Basic Mosaic Manual.......2006-07-31
I found this book to be an excellent primer for the person getting started in mosaics. The various techniques are well illustrated with easy to understand text. I found the designs interesting, colorful, and the type I could put to use. All of this is laid out in a spiral bound book that lays flat for easy reading and reference. I own several books on mosaics, but this one is my favorite.
Very Pleased.......2006-02-25
Shipment got here quick and its everything I had hoped it would be plus more... very happy
OK.......2005-09-06
This is a comprehensive book on mosaic techniques with lots of good detail. I was looking for something that would give me ideas for everyday projects rather than instruction on how to lay floor tile, tiling outdoors, etc. Good book for what it aims at--just not what I was looking for.

Terrific for begiining fabric beader.......2007-09-23
This is a great reference book for the beginning beader. The techniques are clear and concise and the authors photos of her work are terrific.
Inspiring.......2007-08-31
This book was a real inspiration for me to try free-form bead embroidery. The information on supplies and techniques is helpful, but I found the pictures of her work were the most valuable part of the book, giving me all sorts of ideas to try in my own beading.
Some might think this book is only a showcase of one beader's work, and it is, but that is what makes it useful.
Disappointed.......2007-05-30
I was disappointed in this book. The cover is deceiving. Not my taste at all. the service was excellent though.
Great book.......2006-11-04
Good diagrams of the various stitches. Delicious eye candy. It seemed to be mostly for standalone pieces. Not too many garment samples.
Great addition.......2006-08-31
This book was more along the lines I was looking for in fabric beading. Instructions were clear, pictures beautiful and had lots of detail. I will enjoy using this book.

price finder.......2007-09-27
I'm always looking for the best price. So while looking at the magazine ABC Distributing, I found this book and The Marvel Encyclopeda for only $16.95. So why would Amazon sell these book for a higher price? Even with tax and shipping the cost was under $40.00 for both. Always shop around before buying from Amazon.
Cant go wrong.......2007-08-17
It being the only DC encyclopedia that I know of in existance you cant go wrong lots and lots of bios but some are amiss and in some instances it could be more discriptive but great for any fan either way
DC Comics Encyclopedia.......2007-08-03

But it happened last summer, at Harbour Island in the Bahamasa reunion of SI Swimsuit Issue covergirls Rachel Hunter, Rebeca Romijn, Daniela Pestova, Ell MacPherson, Yamila Diaz-Rahi, Elsa Benitez, Veronica Varekova and Carolyn Murphy. Presented here for the first time, in a lavish coffee-table volume, are hundreds of images from that spectacular trip to the beacha set of photos so revealing that you will never see them anywhere else.

Some interesting artistic photography interspersed with too-obvious cover-ups.......2007-02-24
"Exposure" presents an expanded compilation of what Sports Illustrated called the "All-Star SI Cover Model Beach Party" in its 2006 Swimsuit Issue. The photo shoot by Raphael Mazzucco took place in the Bahamas, and featured eight past SI swimsuit cover models, the most famous being Elle MacPherson, Rachel Hunter, Rebecca Romijn and Daniela Pestova. Overall it's good photographic work, and every collector of these swimsuit issues will no doubt have favorites among the eight models.
There are over 100 photos, color and b&w, that range from cleverly artistic to "eh, whatever." Many of the photos are taken right from the Swimsuit Issue, but are enlarged to fit the book's not-quite-double the magazine's size. The girls look great and are dressed in various forms of white bikinis (fashion credits listed in the back of the book).
The one glaring problem I found with this compilation (hence the 3 stars) is that what was supposed to look like a fun-filled frolic (au naturel, sort of) on the beach too many times comes across as a bunch of really self-conscious models unsubtly covering themselves up. Perhaps the girls had a contractual agreement not to be photographed bare-chested, or maybe it was SI's unwillingness to be Playboy-ish, but I think there are better ways to limit such exposure without being so pronounced. I could almost hear the photographer: "Okay everybody, hands over your breasts please!" To me, the artistic direction made these photos restrained at best, and just plain goofy at worst. Believe it or not, I would have rated this book a star or two higher had these pictures been left out(!) since the swimsuits are made to bring out the best in a model's figure (right?). Fortunately, many of the remaining images are awesome in terms of the artistry of capturing beauty(ies) and the beach. It's a good book, just not a great one.
Gorgeous Book.......2007-01-12
A gift for my GF - she loved it. Some of her fav models - like Marissa Miller arent here, but the photos are stunning.

Making Watercolors.......2001-09-23
Harrison defines and employs standard language used in identifying watercolor effects. She also identifies watercolor usages and materials and is consistent in this regard. Her illustrative material is literally a survey of the watercolor world, with no histrionics, from abstraction to the tightest realism. It is a beautiful book and gratifyingly complete. She has no 'method' to push. With her insistence on planning as the key to realizing one's concept, she leaves the reader in peace to enjoy the experience the book offers of seeing how accomplished watercolorists plan their work.
The index is excellent. I will admit disappointment that Harrison touches only lightly on the qualities of now very expensive materials that would enable one to make useful choices. Her remarks on paper by type and maker I find useful and I wish this knowledgeable woman had given the reader more insights on other materials.
Almost half of this book is a reprint of a previous edition........2001-02-14
Some years ago I purchased the previous edition of this book and found it very useful. When I saw what appeared like a new edition of this book I decided to purchase it. On the cover it is marked REVISED AND UPDATED. The techniques are described well and most are new material but Part 2 - Themes is exactly the same as the first edition and this was very disappointing and will make me think carefully about purchasing a book unless I can view it in a bookshop.
Not my favorite book however.......2001-01-29
You might find it useful. If you can only have a few watercolor books, and you are short on technical experience, this might be just the thing for you. But if you are looking for a lot of creative inspiration rather than technique, this isn't so useful. I wasn't inspired by the contents, but the techniques are certainly ones that I do use.
A book that shows how to master the art of watercolor.......1999-12-01
I was requested by my editors to write the introduction to the Brazilian edition of this book and immediately accepted, because, unlike o most books on art techniques, Hazel Harrison concentrates on demonstrating how to master all the resources and effects that watercolor offers, without implying that there is any preferable way in which to paint. The techniques are clearly explained and well illustrated and, in the second part of the book, she includes many examples of how different artists used the effects described in the first part to interpret various subjects. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to master the art of watercolor.

Growing Bonsai: A practical encyclopedia...........2007-09-21
On the surface this book seems to have 600 photos of trees but it repeats toward the back many of the same trees over and over. Also I hope you can read what appears to be Dutch because the first 19 pages are in that language and then the rest of the book is English! Definately a book for the dilatante or coffee table casual reader.
Beautiful as well as essential.......2007-01-07
This is a visually beautiful book that is even more valuable for its contents. A must have if you want to be inspired by beautifully photographed examples of classic trees, along with guidelines for how to begin to create trees in those style. You need to have this book if for no other reason than for the inspiration that it offers.

A kimono and evening gown guide worth owning.......2007-05-30
As you all may know, this book is pretty much like the other three how to draw manga costume encyclopedia books, but each of them have their own theme of course. Inside this volume they give you some examples of how to correctly draw kimono's and evening wear. This book is comprised of two chapters, but I would have to say that they talk more on the kimono's than the gown section in this book. That can be a good thing, and it can also be a bad thing. I personally liked the kimono part in this book than the gown part. That is the whole reason I bought this book, because of the kimono part in here. The gown part in the second chapter is good too, but it seems to show a good bit of wedding shots than evening wear. They even give an example of two people dancing, which can be a plus if you need a ref shot for your manga. Basically this book is teaching you etiquette in both outfits, how to wear them, and how to correctly draw the outfits. The contents of this book includes:
Chapter one Kimono:
A day in a kimono: Female character
A day in a kimono: Male character

All in all this book is the perfect kimono/ gown guide. I really enjoy this book, and it is very helpful when it comes down to the kimono sections. If you are having some trouble with kimono designs/ drawing the kimono and principles, then this book is so for you!! If you also need some help toward evening wear, then this book benefits as the double package!!! This book is also kid friendly due to this book having nude free scenes in it, but, I don't recommend this book for kids or anyone who is a beginner. Since this book really doesn't give you step-by-step guides on actually drawing the kimono's or evening wear. I do recommend this book for those who are intermediate to advance. Anyway, buy this book, it worth your time and money. Add it to your HTDM arsenal today!!
Customer Reviews:
Not that good.......2007-03-12
This book has good tips on color pencil drawing but it lacks on detailed information for truly beginners. Wrong orthography is a problem on this book. It is not worth more than the sales price.
Expand your pencils.......2006-07-09
I have been using Prismacolor pencils for many years and over that time, developed my own techniques, but I found the ideas and examples in this book to be great. I have been dabbling in the techniques I learned in this book and combined some of them with my own. Drawing some things had always been a struggle for me to get "just right," but after seeing some of the detailed examples, I now do them without thought. My favorite discovery in this book was learning to get rid of or hide my mistakes instead of my previous method of just scraping the entire project and starting over.
As for the reviews about the art work, well, they didn't bother me. I wasn't buying a book of art, I was buying a technique book and I found the drawings inside to do a good job of showing off each technique. I also enjoyed that the artwork was taken from various artists because it gave a better sampling of what is possible.
As a recreational sketcher, my husband also enjoyed browsing this book and playing with some of the ideas. Even his notepad doodles now show some signs of the shading and erasing effects that he picked up in this book. So, you don't have to be a serious artist to get something out of this book.
I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to get the most out of their pencils or explore new coloring techniques.
Encyclopedia of Color Pencils.......2006-02-21
I like the book a lot, it will be of great use to me,both for learning and a good source of reference.
I Returned Book.......2005-06-10
The drawings in this book were amaturistic, if not childish.
Not the quality I expected.
Ugh.......2001-07-17
I really didnt find this book helpful at all..For one thing for the most part, she didnt use her own art, and when she did it was discouraging because it wasnt very good(just my opinion, maybe its just her style) I dont think she showed the techniques well, she explains it to a degree, but anyone who has read anything on colored pencil could write a book like hers, she writes about a technique and show other artists work to show it, and it just isnt helpful at all, I wouldnt recommend this book at all.

Customer Reviews:
Encyclopedia--yes, but organized? no.........2006-10-30
This book is very rich in techniques for all kinds of pastel work, from ink and wash with pastel overlay to oil pastel. Many artists' works are featured, and there are plenty of demos on how the work was done. Plus there is a beginning section on various stroke techniques and the effect of colored stocks on how pastel looks applied.
My beef with this book is that it is not particularly organized. So if you are interested in oil pastel, you have to sift through 20 index entries where oil pastel is just mentioned in passing to where it is demonstrated in full.
Still, there is a huge variety in this book, so there is bound to be something to appeal to any artist, no matter what their technique or style.
This book is a treasure.......2005-08-31
This is one of the best art books I have found. The author teaches a lot in a few words. (Have you ever opened an art book, and turned to a subject, only to ask "Is that all they are going to say?") Part 1 is Techniques. Part 2 is Themes. Part 2 breaks general subjects like Landscape, Environment, and The Figure, down to teach you about Seasons, Space and Distance, Industrial Settings, Mood and Atmosphere, Standing Figures, Groups of People, Figures in a Setting, Full-length Portraits, Pattern in Still Life, etc. Even though each section is only a few paragraphs, I learned more than I thought I would. Each section also has several artworks with a paragraph explaining what the artist did.
This book shows a wider variety of illustrative styles than most I've seen. I found I could take a new subject, and flip through it until I found the style I thought would best represent it. It is full of color, good teaching, and variety.
Tremendous shame this book has gone out of print.......2000-04-01
As a professional artist working with pastel, I find this book to be an ongoing source of inspiration and reminders of alternative ways of 'doing' pastels. When I get stuck in a rut, or feel 'stale', browsing this book is one of my favorite ways to get rolling again. With the growing popularity of pastels as an artistic medium, this book truly should be re-issued.
I looked for it for several months locally, then placed my order through Amazon.com. It took six months, but the wait was well worth it! Thank you, Amazon.com!

A trove of ideas and inspiration for beginners and experts alike, this comprehensive volume presents essential information on materials, equipment, planning, finishing, display, and care.
Customer Reviews:
Very Informative.......2005-08-12
I disagree with the previous review. I think this book does a good job of explaining things that beginners need to know. I especially liked the introduction/history of needlework and the many color photographs included. The book discusses materials and equipment needed to start stitching and gives clear instructions with visual aids in how to do the various stitches. It also talks a bit about designing your own work, and finishes as well as caring for your work once it's completed. This is a good resource!
Ok but not super.......2003-10-22
It's a mixed bag book. It's really not for beginners though ti shows lots of stitches and how to make them because it does not have attendant information
about making a project. I'd recommend instead as a beginner book Jo Verso's
book and once you've finished that you may be interested in some of Betty's techniques. If this is your first book you will be disappointed.
