Poor snapshots.......2007-02-13
Wow, what a dissapointment - it hardly captures the magic of Burning Man. With only a couple exceptions, the photos in this book are middling to poor. Most of the pictures of people are of the back of their heads. The pictures of art and vehicles are often framed poorly or feature distracting shadows. The night pictures are blurry and amateurish. There are a lot of great burning man photos out there (see the burning man website); I find it hard to believe this got published and even sanctioned with (a generic) blurb by Larry Harvey.

Having attended Burning Man twice (in 2003 and 2005), and having connected to the amazing experience that it represents for the mind and the body, I am glad to see a book that is capable of capturing most of the images that trigger our senses. Good any time of the day ... it's best alongside your breakfast, helping you carrying the 'burn every day' philosophy throughout your day and evening.

by Barbara Traub convey the special and unique personality of the annual
Burning Man Festival. They also convey the humanity, sense of community
and the unique artistic sensibilities of the participants. The photographs
are excellent in their own right and are a sensitive mixture of color and
black and white. There are several pictures of nude women and men, which are real tributes to human beauty. Also, toward the end of the book, many of the photographs portray surrealistic images that only an expert photographer like Barbara Traub would be capable of. This book is well
worth the investment, not only for those interested in Burning Man, but also
those interested in photography that is spectacular.

amazing illustration.......2006-11-10
I was not aware that I was buying an Illustrated or Graphic novel when I purchased this. I was greatly pleased at the illustration to go along with the story. I had read The Wood Boy in the Legends Series but to add the illustrations made it come to live. As for the Burning Man, reading this graphic novel urged me to read more of Tad Williams also. I would highly recommend this.
Falls apart, horrible production value.......2006-04-27
This book is half good. Half of the Wood Boy story is really well illustrated, then the second half is drawn by some amateur. Same thing with the second story, the first half looks like the artist took his time to craft a lovely visual, then the second half it looks super-rushed, and half-assed.
Then the production value, filler pages flood the middle of the book advertising another series. ADVERTISTING. In a GRAPHIC NOVEL. Then at the end of the book you get a bunch of low resolution sketches that look like they were taken off a website at 72dpi.
Whoever ran the production and editing on this book should be kicked out of the comic book world until they have a clue how to put a decent book together.
Wonderful Adaptation of Two Novellas.......2006-04-17
This graphic novel combines two stories that were adapted from two stories that originally appeared in Robert Silverberg's mammoth anthology LEGENDS in 1998.
This graphic novel collects:
Raymond E. Feist's THE WOOD BOY (a Midkemia story) and Tad Williams's THE BURNING MAN (a Memory, Sorrow and Thorn story).
I think that the WOOD BOY actually improves the story, because it adds visual depth to an otherwise rather lame tale. I have not read the story in a long time, but I remember that it was rather average. But the adaptation was very good and I am looking forward to MAGICIAN.
I think BURNING MAN must have been much more diffcult to adapt because it does not have a lot of outward action, but rather a lot of introspection. A lot hinges on atmosphere rather than plot. But I enjoyed the adaption quite a bit. It was very faithful to the text, but also added a couple of lines of dialogue here and there to make the story livelier. I think that worked rather well.
One little caveat though. When Sulis finally asks the Burning Man his question that he so desires to ask, the answer of the Burning Man is left out and the action resumes with the attack of Tellarin. Is that the point where the other two artists took over from Brett Booth? That was an odd moment, and I think that something is missing there.
But it is a nice book. The characters looked "right" enough to me and I would definitely like to see more of them.
Unfortunately, the Dabel Brothers have currently no other Tad Williams projects in the works (as far as I know), but I hope that that will change soon.
Meanwhile, I am looking forward to MAGICIAN, RED PROPHET and THE SWORN SWORD.
Short but very good........2006-03-03
This "comic" is very good, it has a nice story, very much like other Fiest works (you know, a few fights and near death experiences, throw in a token bit of magic and royalty) and the graphics in this book are amazing.
Personally I felt that they could have been sold seperately so collectors only get the authors work they want, but both stories are good.
Besides that it is very short, takes under 10 minutes to read.

Personally, I think both Feist's Wood Boy and Williams' Burning Man are told better in the text version. While the art does add some definition to some parts of the story, and it is kind of nice to put faces and expressions to the names in the stories, I think it is obvious that these stories were not meant for the comic book format. By breaking up the writing into small bubbles, and relying on the artist for so much of the feel of the story, a lot of the original magic is lost. This is not to blame either the artists (who couldn't have done a better job in my opinion) or the writers. I just think it is hard to bring a novella such as those found in the Legends Anthology to the comic book format.
The Wood Boy is the tale of a small boy in the realm of Feist's Riftwar Saga that lives in a town taken by the Tsurani. As he learns to cope with living as a slave, and as he falls in love with his lord's daughter, the 'wood boy' begins to feel resigned to his fate under his new masters. When one of his only friends betrays his own and kidnaps(?) the lord's daughter, the boy finds himself setting out on a dangerous journey with nothing to loose and nowhere to go. The story ends as a promise for more to come.
In The Burning Man, a lonely girl named Breda is confused by nearly everything that has happened in her life. When she finds out that her cold acting stepfather has captured a witch and seems to be planning on hurting her, Breda goes stealth and witnesses her lover betraying his master. (Interesting both of these stories revolve around unexpected betrayals). This story is told in a narrative form with a much older Breda speaking to the reader of a time long past and includes much more text boxes providing some extra background and setting info.
Still a quick and fun read with really great art, but not a replacement for the original stories.

For someone who would like to but cannot attend Burning Man it is fun to read. I did not go to Woodstock either. (Too pregnant.)

The story of a truly unique American arts festival.......2006-01-03
Burning Man is the arts/creativity/freedom/whatever festival held every September in the Nevada desert.
It started in 1980s San Francisco, in part as a reaction to Ronald Reagan's America. A man named Larry Harvey and some friends gathered on a San Francisco nude beach to burn a wooden effigy of a man (for no especially good reason). The event was "adopted" by various California punk and arts groups, like the L.A. Cacophony Society, and soon grew too big for the nude beach. A home was found deep in the Nevada desert, miles from the nearest civilization.
It is a huge, empty, desolate place, described by one person as living inside an ashtray. The wind blows constantly, sometimes up to 100 miles an hour, and within seconds, everything and everyone is coated with the same gray dust. Permits are required from the Bureau of Land Management, the official owner of the land, and from the local county governments, not always an easy process. As the attendance at Burning Man has grown over the years, from a few hundred people to, presently, 30,000 people, changes have been needed in the organizational structure of the festival. An LLC was formed to take care of the financial recordkeeping, which, for several years in the 1990s, was loose, to say the least. An unofficial police force was formed, to peacefully resolve disputes and to supplement the actual police force, there to keep things from getting too out of hand. Actual zoning has taken place, including the laying out of streets.
At Burning Man, self-reliance is expected by all participants, which includes bringing your own water. Everyone is expected to participate in some sort of art project; spectators are discouraged. "Art" does not mean a painting that is hung on a wall, but some sort of large, interactive creation that people can touch and feel, usually involving fire.
For those with any sort of familiarity about Burning Man, this book does a fine job at getting behind the scenes. For those who have never heard of it, read this story of a truly unique American arts festival. Either way, this is very much recommended.

I went to Burning Man for the first time after reading this book and it was exactly like the author said! It ruined the surprise and I went there totally prepared. He must be stopped from spreading such accurate, detailed descriptions of this mysterious event.
The best BM book ever, and guide to networking subcultures.......2004-10-23
This is by far the best book on Burning Man to come out for those interested in the history, economy, politics and detailed life stories behind the event. I hear that there are more detailed studies of the event coming out in the next year or two. I hope this book inspires more people, especially academicians, to keep thinking about this global cultural phenomenon seriously.
What I found especially useful about this book is that the stories therein constitute a case history for subcultural networking and community building. If you are interested in building synaptic networks between subcultures, this book could be a powerful guide.
This book illustrates the power of synchronicity and simple friendship. If Larry Harvey and Mary Graubarger had not come to San Francisco, had Larry not met Mary at Baker Beach, had the Cacophony Society not discovered Harvey's beach burn, would any of this have happened?
Though much of what came together may have been accident (or destiny), it is clear from the book that Larry Harvey is a true subcultural Faustian (in Howard Bloom's [Global Brain] sense). Without Harvey's leadership, and subtle and intuitive grasp of the nascent unconscious symbolic substratum that he had uncovered, the spiderweb of networks and relationships that followed his work probably would never have developed into anything close to the Burning Man we know and love. In short, it takes leadership and luck to build community.
This book is more than a book about Burning Man. It is a manual to building communities of cultural creatives everywhere.

This is seriously one of the coolest books I've ever seen in my life. I've never been to Burning Man (wouldn't want to), but these pictures are AMAZING. It might have been worth enduring desert discomfort dust storms and camping just to see the 2996 "Uchronia" structure-- wow.

This is one of the best audiobooks I have ever listened to. It had characters that kept my interest. The storyline was fast paced and never boring. The reader was superb. I highly recommend. I will listen to this more than once. This book is a keeper in my book.
A capitivating mystery.......2003-07-08
Young and arrogrant, Peter Hale was sent to a back-woods town for a lesson in humility after fumbling a major case for his father. Driven from his life of priviledge where nothing but the finest would do ~~ Peter takes on another case and this time, learns a lesson about human nature. He took on a case of a mentally-retarded man who is accused of killing a young college co-ed. This same man was also caught just a few weeks prior as a peeping tom at the local college. This man is also a brother-in-law of Peter's former college classmate ~~ another reason why Peter took on the case.
This book is full of twists and turns that Margolin is famous for ~~ and his writing captivates your attention from beginning to the end. Margolin shows human nature at its worst and shows it at its best ~~ and though you thought you have it all figured out ~~ he surprises you again. It's a fun and fast legal thriller ~~ perfect for summer reading. I had a blast reading this book and so did everyone who I loaned this book to!

The burning man gets burned.......2003-04-21
Reading a book was usually challenging for me to do, I could never get myself motivated and ready to read a book such as The Burning Man. This book took a few pages for me to get into it, but after a while I found myself not being able to put it down.The book was a well-written murder mystery, with many different twists in it.
It starts out with Peter being a lawyer in a big time company, which is his dad's law firm. After an incident with his father, Peter thinks he can win the case for his dad's client. Soon after that though his father disowns him in a way. After the stunt he pulled his dad basically disowned him. Peter's first couple nights that he was in the small town of Whitaker were lonely; he wanted a woman around so he tried to meet a few girls since he was in the college town. He finally got to meet with whom he would be working.
His name was Amos Geary, but soon he left him when he met his friend Steve who was a lawyer in the small town also. Peter got a chance to erase his past when he was offered a case that involved a murder suspect. The murder suspect was Gary; he was the son-in-law of Steve. Gary was also mentally handicapped. For some reason Steve wanted Peter to take over this case, which shows why later in the book. Gary was the only suspect, which seemed to be strange at the time. With Steve's wife Donna helping Peter on the case it seemed to open up different leads in the book. With two drug addicts who show up through out the book it seems they could be involved with the murder. Steve was trying to get a big loan for apartments, which would serve as a place for people to stay if they were to represent the Olympics. When plans fall through with the loan, and also new evidence appears it makes for a twist like you could never believe. Though out the story Peter and everyone involved with helping Gary wasn't sure if Gary's brain could think of such a thing as this. In a small town like Whitaker it showed that secrets between high people may pay off in the beginning but with a small atmosphere things will leak out.
The experience I had with this book was good; in other books I could just have put them down and not worried about it. But, this book was different having many different plots to each character made the book more interesting and suspenseful. With many different characters it was hard to keep track of who was who. The author though made a back round for every character and a description of them that helped in the realistic aspect of the book. This was a realistic book I thought for being a fiction book. The case was real and what happens though out the book with people and what they end up doing just seems it could happen anywhere. The language was good at points with swearing happening at the high points in the book, it seemed to fit what would be said in a real situation. This book along with being a murder mystery and a legal thriller, it also had kind of a love story between it. The nice thing about the love aspect of it, it keeps you thinking till the end of the story when it all comes together. All the points in the book don't tie together right away which makes it a good thriller.
If you like books that keep you on the edge of your seat, and keep you wondering though out the book this is the book for you. If you are someone who reads books and tries to figure out the ending before you get there this is definitely the book for you. This will leave you guessing the whole time. I recommend this book to anyone who just wants a good book to read. Take it from me I don't read much and I wanted to read the whole thing. That should give a hint on how good this book is.
HOT STUFF.......2003-02-15
One has to admire Margolin's ability to take standard characters and situations and mold them into engrossing, suspenseful thrillers. "The Burning Man" is a good example. We meet a spoiled, egocentric, self-centered lawyer named Peter Hale who botches a case for his stricken father, who is so upset with him he fires him from his law firm, disinherits him and ships him off to the boonies of Oregon (guess every state has their own boonies)to work as a public defender. His new boss, Amos Geary, immediately dislikes him, and Peter ends up handling the defense of a mentally retarded man accused of the horrible slaying of a college co-ed. Mixed in with this are a couple of druggies, Christopher Mammon and Kevin Booth. Add a career-minded, unethical female prosecutor, Becky O'Shay, and things heat up. Not to mention Peter's friend, Steve Mancini, and his new wife, Donna, who happens to be the accused's sister. Whew!
At any rate, the plot moves along well, and there are several surprising revelations in the book. And yes, Peter, does become a better man after going through this mess!
Highly enjoyable entertainment.
And I think the title is pretty obvious once the book is ended.

It is an experience that cannot be described. But this book does an excellent job of trying. By including people the the Tuna Guys (and not just the craziness), you get a glimpse of what makes the place magic.

There is nothing out there that captures the experience of Burning Man better
than this book. With its inventive graphics and many pictures, and a very well written account by the author, it seems this book was created for both veterans and the merely curious.

Finish this delightful and philosophical "page-turner" and you'll walk away with the next best thing to being there. If you've never been, perhaps now you'll finally head straight for the Playa. If you've been once or many times, Pendell's work offers such refreshingly complete insight into this massive experience that this reader was reawakened from his slumber in the default world and transported Home once again. More than just nostalgia-maintenance for Burners, however, this book provides a good socio-cultural analysis of Burning Man, allowing anyone a very real entryway into understanding what makes this art happening so special in today's times.

The Burning Man Festival is a weeklong spasm of radical self-expression held annually just before Labor Day since 1986. In late August 2003, more than 33,000 participants converged in Nevada's Black Rock Desert for this counterculture event staged as an experiment in temporary community.
The participants gather to rid themselves of the conventional structures of their life and to "sample" the alternatives in hundreds of theme camps. The climax of the festival comes when attendees erupt into cheers and applause at the burning of a forty-foot-tall human effigy described as "part pre-technological idol and part post-technological puppet."
AfterBurn contributor Erik Davis writes of the festival, "Ironic and blasphemous, intoxicated and lewd, Burning Man's ADD theater of the absurd might even be said to embody the slap-happy nihilism of postmodern culture itself."
CounterCulture series editor David Farber summarizes the significance of the event: "[Burning Man is] spiritual discovery, utopian experiment, artistic spectacle, participatory democracy, do-it-yourself anarchism, and communitarian adventure." I'm pleased to see that academia is now starting to look to subcultural doings as they happen, instead of invoking the fond nostalgia that the Beatniks inspired. The ability to digest and deconstruct the events that take place in this otherworldly space is much to be commended, and I think that by doing so the authors of these various articles may be tapping in to something most of their colleagues shy away from. The articles themselves are intriguing and scholarly, but never lose sight of their subject. I would love to see more editions of this book as the event (and the world around it - the context) changes and grows!
Smell the playa dust..........2006-03-31
in these pages? Read this book and you will. Tho the author comments that this book was a composite of many different burning an festivals, te undercurrent feels strangely like one which puts you there in the middle of things.
There are a few details which, if you've been there, are a little flaky, and the book gets off to kind of a slow start (ergo the 4 stars) but as you bury yourself in this read (and it's one read that, if you're at all a burner, you will end up burying yourself in) you will be amazed... engrossed... wind blown... with a lot of little surprises thrown in that you don't expect, even all the way at the end.
There is another thing, tho... if you've never been to Black Rock City, and wonder what all the hubbub is about, ad you want to know if that ticket's worth it... and what it's getting you into... this book will give you a fairly good idea. Of course, your experience is your own... but, like I said in the beginning... read this, and you can almost smell the playa dust in these pages...

Reflections on the Reflections of Burning Man.......2005-10-27
Prior to reading this excellent sophisticated introduction to Burning Man, I had dismissed this event as shamanism and tantra for amateurs. However, these well written, knowledgeable, and at times quite learned articles, have convinced me that Burning Man allows for the creation of authentic rituals that are rife with both transformative and aesthetic epiphanies. Moreover, it appears that Burning Man has largely not yet been" recouped" (to the use Guy Debord's term) by bourgeois capitualist society, and thereby succeeds where its predecessors, the Surrealists and Situationists, left off. Next year, instead of visiting the Himalayas or Mongolia for my taste of the (w)holy other, I will just go to Burning Man.
