5 out of 5 stars Nice follow up to Behind the Wheel Spanish I.......2007-06-27

Behind the Wheel Spanish I blew me away. I'm an intermediate to advanced Spanish speaker with a big gringo accent. The Level I was so amazing that this Level II program didn't impress as much. Still, the practical application of this program is solid. The variety of words and verb conjugations presented is outstanding. Overall this program is still definitely a 5 star rating.

5 out of 5 stars Best Spanish Learning Program Ever!.......2007-05-17

This is an awesome product! I have both Behind the Wheel Spanish I and II and they have helped me learn so much Spanish! I am so much more confident to speak Spanish with native Spanish speakers because of these c.d.'s. They're interesting and the simple way they explain Spanish grammar and sentence structure is amazing. I teach English as Second Language and I'm learning how to teach English better using their simple and effective approach!

4 out of 5 stars Works pretty well.......2007-01-12

For the most part, this was beginning/intermediate. The male voice was great, but the female voice sometimes spoke to fast and didn't enunciate and I couldn't understand, not even if I went back. I've picked up a great deal, however, and the repetition is necessary.

4 out of 5 stars CDs are great.......2007-01-09

The only problem I have had with these tapes is that the seem to have a skip or something and I didn't notice it until I got to it (the 3rd or 4th CD in the set). By then it was really too late to return them. However, for the most part I don't have a lot of problems with them and I do like the lessons.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Vocabulary Builder for the Intermediate to Low Advanced Student.......2006-04-02

As the editor of the Learning Spanish Products Reviews (LearningSpanishProductsReviews) site, one of my responsibilities is to review learning-Spanish resources that are listed on Amazon. I am also a native Spanish speaker and a professional private Spanish instructor.

Like Learn In Your Car Spanish, Behind the Wheel Spanish 2 is a course that allows the user to learn while driving or performing another activity. However, I undoubtedly prefer this course over Learn In Your Car Spanish for several reasons. First of all, each CD begins with a 'pronunciation guide" to assist the student in proper pronunciation. Secondly, the CDs also have numerous short stories or short dialogs that are read by a native speaker. By listening to these short stories or short dialogs, the student is able to quickly improve her listening comprehension. Thirdly, the narrator instructed the native speaker to explain to the student when words varied from one country to another. One example, the native speaker told the word for "bus station" as it is said in most of Latin America as well as Mexico.

Lastly, the native speakers vary the speed of their speech. You will hear the native speakers speak at a pace slightly slower than normal speech so that you can emulate the native speaker and develop proper pronunciation. But you will also hear the native speakers speak at normal speed to improve your listening comprehension and to also prepare you for actual conversation.

Another positive point to this course is that you will learn a huge amount of vocabulary. If you are an intermediate to low advanced student and you are looking to expand your vocabulary, Behind the Wheel Spanish Level 2 will leave you quite pleased with the vocabulary that you have learned.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent survey of western history.......2003-12-13

Civilization in The West is a superb text. Written by an outstanding group of historians the book is highly readable and contains a wealth of information. The suggestions for additional reading at the end of each chapter are invaluable and list the key texts for any time period. Finally, the colorful illustrations and photographs brilliantly compliment the text. This book is a definite buy for anyone interested in a general guide to western civilization.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely a college text!.......2002-07-30

I enjoyed this text during my history class very much because it was so in depth. The hundreds of famous paintings alone make this book worthwhile, but it reads very much like a college text. Don't get me wrong -- I came to love history through taking this class, and the book was a large part of that. You must have a high level of literacy and some previous knowledge of history to read this book very easily. NO DETAILS ARE LEFT OUT!!! The book is fabulous and I would recommend it to any level anyways.

4 out of 5 stars Good textbook, not nearly as bad as some i have had to read.......2001-10-18

The book had lots of info and was easy to understand. It covered all of the most important aspects of western civilizations. Anyone who complains that it was hard to read is an ... I would consider myself smart but i am by no means a rocket scientist and i found this book easy to read and enjoyable. It provided lots of information about certain interesting aspects of different civilizations cultures that would appeal to anyone who whould sign up for a history course.

2 out of 5 stars This text book is very dull........2000-12-13

This book is used as a MEH textbook for sophomores in my highschool. My friends and i found this book to be very dull and boring. It contains a lot of information but the way it is presented is not in an interesting manner, rather in a dull way. This book has no bold words which makes it difficult for us to read. I believe it was chapter 17 or 18 that the beginning was very interesting but suddenly it became boring. I think history is interesting but the way that this book teaches it to you is very uninteresting. I don't suggest this book for any highschool student. Everyday when we get our history assignment i dread to read this book because it is so boring.

2 out of 5 stars Civilization in the West, by Kishlansky, Geary, O'Brien.......2000-02-24

This book is a cornucopia of detail. It is undeniably the most detailed of any textbook on the subject. Unfortunately, this otherwise useful textbook suffers from poor if not outright negligent editing. Some paragraphs are virtually incomprensible. The text reads as if the individual authors took turns writing sentences. The concept of topic sentences and paragraphs expressing discrete subjects seems to have been lost on the authors as well as the editors.

Book Description

With the political history of the nation as its organizational framework, American Destiny: Narrative of a Nation describes the development and growth of the United States as the product of the myriad actions, ideas, and forces of the immense variety of individuals and groups who together comprise the American people.

In richly detailed prose, the book examines the political, social, economic, and cultural developments that have shaped this country. This elegantly written, high-quality text offers a low-price alternative to traditional U.S. history survey textbooks.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not a great text for learning.......2007-04-27

(1.5 stars) This was required for AMH2020 and the teacher agreed - it isn't among the best texts. The authors' over-stylized narrations miss their mark and the valuable points become lost. Furthermore, it's sporatic in its presentation and often only glimpses certain important events. All in all, not recommended if avoidable.

2 out of 5 stars Very Biased.......2006-11-23

Very biased American History textbook. Narrative style often makes it possible for the authors to hide certain controversies from the reader, or to introduce only one side of the story. This narrative definitely comes from the word "narrow". Do not recommend.

      Book Description

This book, the result of an international collaborative project, provides a new quantitative view of the wartime economic experiences of six great powers: the UK, the United States, Germany, Italy, Japan and the USSR. A chapter is devoted to each country, while the introductory chapter presents a comparative overview. It aims to provide a text of statistical reference for those interested in international and comparative economic history, the history of World War II, the history of economic policy, and comparative economic systems.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars macroeconomic overview of major combatants.......1998-12-31

This book is a very learned overview of the macro-economic factors affecting the WWII war economies of major combatants. A certain degree of acquaintance with economic monetary theory is advisable. The fact that it includes all the major players is valuable (any article on Italy's war efforts is always welcome!), but the emphasis some of the articles give to econometric treatment is, frankly, irrelevant to understanding most of the war effort, especially when one is talking of survival. The book also tries to analyse how wartime experience helped shape the post war economy, a field in which it it quite successful. It is worth noting, by the way, that generally speaking all the authors seem to agree that wartime investment in capital formation and technical training schemes paid off for the vanquished, whilst in the case of the USSR, the amount of war destruction and the political predominance of the "industrial-military complex" led, ultimately, to economic stagnation.

Advisable for anyone with a serious interest in wartime economics.

      Book Description

Contents. In an age of exaggeration and hype, when words like "great," "famous," and "legendary" are often used to describe the ordinary and slightly-above-average, it is difficult to describe the truly special. Further, when so much has been written about a subject, it is hard to find fresh perspectives and new ways to approach it.

With Vanguard of the Crusade, author Mark Bando has accomplished just these things. Through decades of painstakingly collecting and verifying first-hand accounts of some of the fiercest fighting in the European Theater, he has illuminated the personal experiences of the members of this truly and justly famous American airborne division. From their baptism of fire in the advance echelon of Operation Overlord, to capturing the first objectives of Operation Market-Garden, and defiantly holding the key crossroads at Bastogne during the German Ardennes Offensive, the exploits of the "Screaming Eagles" are expertly recounted in this heavily-illustrated single volume.

Expanding significantly on the author's previous work, Vanguard of the Crusade includes dozens of previously unpublished, rare photos as well as significantly enhanced versions of photos which have appeared in some of his works before. Historians, buffs, reenactors, and collectors alike will be fascinated by the extensive new sections about airborne equipment and parachutists' uniforms, as well as the all-new special feature segments about the major German formations defeated by the 101st in its campaigns in France, Holland, and Belgium. Ten brand new, highly-detailed maps based directly on primary source documents also support the text, which, like Bando's previous works, draws heavily on vividly-recounted, authentic anecdotes gleaned from the airborne veterans themselves.

Significance More than any of the other combatant forces in the Second World War, the US Army standardized its divisions' organization, training, and doctrine. This allowed unparalleled flexibility of employment and a consistency of battlefield performance rivaled by the tactical forces of no other army. Airborne divisions, on the other hand, were the closest thing the US Army had to specially trained and organized "assault" units, designed specifically for striking behind enemy lines and holding key terrain while isolated and cut off.

The 101st Airborne Division thus required and attracted a special kind of soldier, of whom unusual-and deadly-demands were made routinely, in training as well as combat. By chronicling the Division's combat experience through the eyes and in the words of its soldiers themselves, Vanguard of the Crusade provides priceless insights into what made this division so distinctive and the traditions it built so worthy. Perhaps one of their own, Private First Class Tex McMorries, put it best, "The best and toughest of the paratroopers were cold, fearless killers, who went to great extremes to kill the enemy." Vanguard of the Crusade is their story.

Told without a shred of sentimentality, but with an implicit and profound respect for the paratroopers and glidermen who wore the Screaming Eagle patch, the book captures the spirit and the deeds of the Division which, from Normandy to Holland to the Ardennes, was the vanguard-and a bulwark-of the Crusade in Europe.

5 out of 5 stars Trailing the Vanguard.......2005-08-03

I obtained a copy of this book to aid my understanding of the common soldiers' actions and thoughts while touring these battlefields. I found it to be a valuable tool in tracing the actions of the past. Bando has done a credible job in collecting and providing context to the wealth of information gleaned from the veterans and collected in this volume. Richly illustrated, it is deserving of a spot on any WWII buffs bookshelf. Aberjona Press is to be congratulated on providing this updated version based on Mark Bando's earlier works.

5 out of 5 stars Honor to the Eagle.......2005-07-26

Mark Bando has done an outstanding piece of work in his "Vanguard of the Crusade: The 101st Airborne Division in WWII."

I have read copies of this and some of his earlier work and find "Vanguard" an impressive fusion of, and significant addition to it. What's more, the author's sense of dynamic and his attention to detail reflect mastery of the subject material and reflect great honor upon the many, many superb accomplishments of the 101st Airborne Division in World War II. Bando rates a 'thumbs up' in my mind.

I was surprised at recent rating remarks that were quite critical of this book and of its publisher. I have read both of Bando's earlier works leading to "Vanguard" and believe "Vanguard" is much more than a paste-together: both as seen from detail to information and attention to detail in preparation, photos, and printing.

What the eye sees, is what it sees. In my opinion, comparison of earlier Bando publication photos shows the "Vanguard" publisher worked diligently to ensure best possible renditions - and a lot of new data - are in the book. Deterioration of the quality of archived or private photo records nearly 60 years old is inevitable. The "Vanguard" publisher, in my opinion, did his best to obtain pictures of high quality - and that might intrigue the reader, spurring him/her on to the next pages and revelations.

In the Amazon description of "Vanguard" there are plain words saying it is an improvement/expansion that draws on Bando's earlier works, with more detail, more maps, more data.

I believe the author-publisher team has created an exceptional new recounting of glory, grimaces, and ghosts of war. Hats off to Mark Bando and the Aberjona Press!

5 out of 5 stars THE Encyclopedia of the 101st. Airborne Division in WWII.......2004-07-28

Vanguard is the most comprehensively researched work between two covers of the Screaming Eagles in WWII, from (A)ddeville to (Z)ell am See. It's the perfect mix between a scholarly presentation of the facts, and human interest war stories as told through the words of the men who were in the "dress rehearsal" for the Hollywood productions. Bando is not a cheerleader, so don't expect a spin on the facts. He's a retired policeman, an investigator/researcher and a reporter of events. He often leaves the answers to questions of right or wrong to the reader. You get the report of what happened as seen through the eyes of the men who pulled the triggers and lived through experiences that many of them still think about daily.

Bando's decades of personal interviews and research have become his trademark. There are no research assistants or hastily pumped out books to coincide with the anniversary of a well-known invasion or battle. When he writes something that isn't attributed to another author, you can be sure that it was the result of 40 years of personal research that included and continues to include traveling the country speaking to individual veterans, attending everything from company to division reunions, and regular trips to the National Archives and the battlefields of Europe, whether he's armed with a notebook, camera or metal detector. I'm never surprised when I read a quality book by another author (Richard Killblane and Jake McNiece's "Filthy Thirteen" for instance) and see Bando's name in the footnotes or bibliography.

"Vanguard" turns the spotlight over to the guys who weren't portrayed by Hollywood's A list in the movies. Men like Lt. William Russo, who could do with an 81mm mortar what a sniper could do with a scoped rifle, only to much more dramatic effect on the hapless target.

I wish I had the time to go through "Vanguard" like Manny, with my maps out, especially the ones published with Bando's 2-part article in "Armchair General" magazine, but the anecdotes on virtually every page of the book are enough to keep me turning the pages. They're stories you haven't heard before, whether the story is humorous such as when Jack Womer of "Filthy Thirteen" fame speaks of Winston Churchill urinating on his boots while he hid in a hay pile after a practice jump, or riveting like the story of one-man army Charles Santarsiero, or Joe Beyrle, who spent more combat time with a Russian armor unit after multiple escapes from German POW camps than he did with US troops. Vanguard also answers the question: "Can one paratrooper shoot 3 SS men with one round from his M-1?" The answer, of course, is "yes", and Leo Gillis did it.

If you like history more than Hollywood, and want the most accurate information available on the 101st. ABD in WWII, buy this book. Better yet, buy this one together with "101st Airborne: The Screaming Eagles at Normandy". Some authors dedicate their careers to what they know, and others to what they can sell quickly. This author knows what he's talking about.

5 out of 5 stars The Rolls Royce of US Army Airborne Books.......2004-07-26

Had there been a Nobel Prize for military history books Mark Bando's Vanguard of the Crusade would be nominated...and ought to win. It is crystal clear to me that the research behind this book is close to a life-time of hard work (I am an author myself). The text is stunning both in content and style. And the number of not only unpublished but also amazing photographs is awesome. In contrast to many other divisional histories you'll also learn from this book about the enemies that the division fought - in great detail. If ever there was and will be an absolute must book for US Army airborne veterans, family and buffs - this is it.

5 out of 5 stars Brothers in Arms, Men of Courage and Integrity, and Vanguard.......2004-04-18

Vanguard of the Crusade: The 101st Airborne Division in World War II by Mark Bando is a truly special chronicle of the 101st Airborne from its time in wait in England prior to the invasion of the Continent to the end of the war and disbanding of the Division. Vanguard stands as a tribute to those who fought with the Screaming Eagles, whether they survived the war or not.

Bando has sculpted his prose from hundreds of interviews and personal diaries (although expressly forbade in combat zones!) of 101st veterans. With often only snippets of information from any single source, Bando has been able to piece together an engaging history of combat of one of the most elite forces the Allies assembled during the Second World War. Where possible Bando has reproduced the words of the veterans verbatim within the context of larger discussions lending a feel of authenticity that many other works do not achieve. Vanguard is not written in the flowery novelette style of so many authors (e.g., Ambrose) and as such may be a "difficult" read for many less interested in historical events minus the Hollywood feel. Yet, having said that, anyone interested in how the 101st earned its reputation should not be deterred from tackling this book. It's a wonderful collection of memories and writings that is weaved into a nearly seamless single story of the Division from England 1943 to late 45 in occupied Germany. If you want HISTORY - untainted and without opinions based on hindsight of 60 years - this is it. Bando and the Editorial staff at Aberjona Press have done an incredible job checking, re-checking and verifying information and this fact alone makes this a wonderful piece of historical writing. One other subtle yet VERY effective editorial trick has been to italicize German unit names. In this way it is always clear who is who without knowing all units by heart.

Vanguard of the Crusade represents an indispensable source of fuller information that has not been pre-digested for those less patient for the complete story. Two obvious examples come to mind: First, many probably think they know the "story" of the Airborne drop in the Netherlands as part of Operation Market-Garden. However, the story told in the classic (and both well written and factually sound) A Bridge Too Far by Cornelius Ryan is quite "sanitized" and abridged with respect to the actions in which the 101st were involved. Bando does a wonderful job touching on the breadth of the combat situations in which the Screaming Eagles were involved while trying to keep Hell's Highway open. It is probably fair to assume that many people assume that the 101st fought as a single group in relatively small engagement areas during Market-Garden but Bando's text makes it clear that the reality was that of smaller groups spread over greater distances engaged in multiple hit-and-run (generally) battles with both first and second-rate German troops. Few sources (one exception being It Never Snows In September by Robert Kershaw) make this clear. Second, although the Battle of the Bulge is certainly one of the most recognized military actions of the US armed forces, and many know that the 101st Airborne Division played a crucial role, it is unlikely that many understand what the siege on Bastogne really represented in terms of combat. Contrary to "popular" depictions, the month long fierce battles around town of Bastogne were not simply one battle a la the Alamo. Certainly Bastogne was surrounded by the Germans and siege set, but many small Belgian towns like Foy, Bizory, Marvie, Longvilly, and Noville that were situated around Bastogne played a role in its defense and ultimate reversal of battle. It is important to remember not just those who fought from within Bastogne proper, but also those who battled from a distance of yards to a few miles outside Bastogne itself. It was this collective group that earned the Distinguished Unit Citation en masse for their key role in the Battle of the Bulge. Bando dedicates a large portion of his text to these lesser known but not lesser important engagements.

I found Vanguard of the Crusade to be an extremely pleasurable read. I would sit with maps of the various engagements (all the maps presented in the book can be downloaded and printed from: http://aegis-consulting.com/index.html), plot the actions while I moved through the text, and get lost in the hundreds of photographs presented that put a real face on the map coordinates and words. While it is not essential to read Vanguard in this fashion I suggest it, as it is rare that one can so lose oneself so fully in a popular historical text. I give Vanguard a hearty 5 stars for context, presentation and soul!

      3 out of 5 stars Hitler's Greece.......2003-01-16

Overall this is a good book. It is not the most organized book nor the most enthralling in terms of colorful language and storytelling, but informs the reader in a way that makes it hard to quit reading. This book isn't a collection of eyewitness stories, though it has many clips here and there from eyewitnesses. Instead, it tells the story of what the average Greek went through (famine, massacres, deportation, plundering, torture, etc). It deals mainly with the guerilla warfare that took over the whole country. Mazower explains how the different groups (communist, Nazi, Greek royalist, British, etc) dealt with each other. What is surprising is that their was no "good" or "bad" group; all of them made mistakes and did unspeakable things. Mazower seems to write completely unbiasedly and informatively. The only reason this book didn't get five stars is because it is somewhat disorganzed and can be confusing. Those who want to read about Germans and Nazism in Greece may be disappointed. But those who want to learn how the war changed Greece and her people forever will not be let down.

      3 out of 5 stars Idiosyncratic narrative.......2002-03-08

It has long been traditional amongst certain kinds of disconnected intellectual to maintain that the Greek communists were romantic heroes. Much as it is pleasant to create illusions and myths that accord with one's own political prejudices, the slenderest acquaintance with the primary sources makes it completely impossible to believe in this one. We have been unable to conclude otherwise than that, when they were not totally useless, perfidious, and parasitic they were unspeakably barbaric. Now that the cold war is over, there is no longer any vested interest in pretending otherwise. Mr. Mazower's narrative is idiosyncratic and biased.
EAM/ELAS was nothing but a carnivorous plant. EAM/ELAS was planted on Greek soil by the Communist party of Greece (KKE) and the Oxbridge types of SOE. EAM/ELAS was fertilized with British gold sovereigns, and was fed with the corpses of the Greek people who systematically, and very often in a barbarous way, its thugs murdered.

If you like reading about Hitler, and if you're interested in Greece, then have I got the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars A valuable contribution to modern historical understanding.......2001-05-11

Meticulously researched and thoughtfully written, Mazower's Book is a valuable contribution to our understanding of European history in the first half of the twentieth century, especially during the decade of the 1940s. As the title suggests, this is a work about the German occupation of Greece. The unique character of Greece's political, social and economic structures make the story especially complicated. The suffering of the Greeks during the occupation was particularly intense. The famine that caused many thousands of deaths is a part of the suffering. So were the occupiers' reprisals at resistance activity. The author offers insightful analyses of the work and organization of the resistance, including various Communist groups, to show how and why the communists were able to carry on a civil war against the Athens government once the war was over. In an excellent chapter on the suffering of Jewish Greeks, he details how about fifty thousand Jews -- mostly from Salonika -- were deported to death camps in Poland and elsewhere. Personally, I take some comfort in Mazower's statement on page 159 that, in general, most Orthodox Christian Greeks made a determined effort to save their Jewish compatriots from the invaders by hiding them and providing them with food.

Mazower has recently edited a book of fourteen essays titiled After the War Was Over, exploring the question of how collaborators were dealt with in the years following the occupation. ...

5 out of 5 stars An Historian who Cares........2001-04-15

This book is a favorite in our family as it Describes with a Heart, not only "cold" History, The Occupation of Greece and the Tragedy of Greek Jewry in WW2. There are many books in Israel to be found with personal accounts that have no scientific perspective. They can be boring. On the other hand there are Historians who write about WW2 as a military campaign, ignoring the Human Perspective. Mark Mazower is intelligent enough also to see thru the Political Background. Greece was divided like many countries by "Right-Left". This distorted many peoples views about what was happening. Some people (including some jews) who hated the British or the Communists, Co-operated with the Nazi's. Mark's Book is Historically Scientific, Not Politically Biased, and has enough Personal stories too make this a winner. I would like to read Mark's other books.

      Book Description

War is now an important part of development discourse. Aid agencies have become involved in humanitarian assistance, conflict resolution and the social reconstruction of war-torn societies. This deeply thoughtful book explores the growing merger of development and security. Its author unravels the nature of the new wars - in Africa, the Balkans, Central Asia - and the response of the international community, in particular the new systems of global governance that are emerging as a result.

The breakdown of order is seen as symptomatic of long-term social processes: economic crisis, the social exclusion of wide strata of populations and internal conflict. Instead of the historic goals of modernity, development to reduce inequality, and a central role for the state, we have a neo-medieval situation in which overlapping and fragmented sovereignties confront an increasingly weakened central authority.

The consequences, as Duffield shows, are far-reaching. Development now focuses primarily on the shortcomings of structures within the South. Aid is privatized. A rising level of violence and misery are accepted as normal, and new forms of humanitarian aid intervention, far from solving the problem, accommodate and coexist with this instability and inequality. Pessimistic perhaps, but this book is profound in its insights and pregnant with policy implications.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Serious Thinkers of International Affairs.......2007-01-08

Professor Mark Duffield has done the near impossible, he has given a detailed description and explanation of one of the most complex assemblages ever devised: the post-Cold War, free market/free trade-driven international order. In excruciating detail, professor Duffield explains how the WTO-structured global economic system - what we think of as "globalization" - works to: attenuate state power, deregulate and disrupt traditional economies, create ever-more "complex and opaque forms of transaction and ownership," and essentially restructures international governing bodies to fit into this new world system. Professor Duffield manages to do this with no discernible political "spin." His gaze is unremitting and clear-eyed whether it falls on corrupt third-world governments, U.N. and NGO developmental types, western donor nations, politicians of all stripes, or African and Afghani warlords.
If one wants to understand the underlying forces driving the conflicts extant in today's world and the global community's responses to these crises, there is no better place to start than with professor Duffield's "Global Governance and the New Wars."
