    The original American satirist

Cracked on the head by a crowbar in nineteenth-century Connecticut, Hank Morgan wakes to find himself in King Arthur's England. Branded by Twain's aptitude for broad comedy and biting social satire, the grim truths of Twain's Camelot-fear, injustice, ignorance-resound as clearly now as when it was written

It was in Warwick Castle that I came across the curious stranger whom I am going to talk about. He attracted me by three things: his candid simplicity, his marvelous familiarity with ancient armor, and the restfulness of his company - for he did all the talking. We fell together, as modest people will, in the tail of the herd that was being shown through, and he at once began to say things which interested me. As he talked along, softly, pleasantly, flowingly, he seemed to drift away imperceptibly out of this world and time, and into some remote era and old forgotten country; and so he gradually wove such a spell about me that I seemed to move among the specters and shadows and dust and mold of a gray antiquity, holding speech with a relic of it! Exactly as I would speak of my nearest personal friends or enemies, or my most familiar neighbors, he spoke of Sir Bedivere, Sir Bors de Ganis, Sir Launcelot of the Lake, Sir Galahad, and all the other great names of the Table Round - and how old, old, unspeakably old and faded and dry and musty and ancient he came to look as he went on! Presently he turned to me and said, just as one might speak of the weather, or any other common matter -

"You know about transmigration of souls; do you know about transposition of epochs - and bodies?"

I said I had not heard of it. He was so little inter ested - just as when people speak of the weather - that he did not notice whether I made him any answer or not. There was half a moment of silence, imme diately interrupted by the droning voice of the salaried cicerone:...

4 out of 5 stars Progress: Modernization or Destruction?.......2007-10-01

This novel tells the story of Hank Morgan, a 19th century engineer from Hartford, Connecticut who through a strange turn of events finds himself in the 66h century England of King Arthur. He is almost immediately captured by a knight upon his arrival in the 6th century and taken to Camelot where he learns he is to be executed in a couple days time. Using his superior modern wit to escape the situation, hank sets out on a grand process of introducing 19th century technology, know-how, education, and values to Arthur's realm.

The novel is filled with many humorous moments as is apt with other fiction from Twain but there is also a distinct dark side to the story that becomes ever more apparent. The impact of the past with the present (at least at the time of writing) results in the dismantling of the romantic view of the past while simultaneously reveals the faults in the belief of scientific and social progress. The England of Arthur is depicted as one where the people, although not generally subjected to the institution of slavery, are for all purposes the equivalent of slaves. The `freemen' of the day have no rights whatsoever and are subject to the whims of a nobility whose only entitlement to rule is blueness of their blood. The Church is similarly depicted as repressing force against the mass of humanity. The protagonist Hank struggles endlessly to awaken in the people a sense of social justice and outrage at being treated as dirt by their noble lords. He is constantly frustrated in his attempts though and concludes that the level of indoctrination is so deep in the people that only large structural changes and the rise of a new generation will provide the seeds for a revolution to overturn the existing order.

Hank Methodically sets out to accomplish just such a revolution by starting clandestine centers of education and industry, all the while keeping an eye on the Church so as not to have his program disrupted. With the introduction of modern technology and education, `progress' moves along at a steady pace. But with all the advances to society also comes the capacity to disrupt and destroy as much if not more. In seeking to replace the controlling ideology of the Church, Hank inadvertently sets up a rival ideology that demands the complete submission of the people as well.

Twain's criticisms of the 19th century become all the more apparent when applied against the backdrop of an age unrecognizable to ours. It is rather amazing that the problems he confronts, free market capitalism, mechanization of war, political ideologies, confidence in a historical progression towards a better society, would all come to the fore in the 20th century as pressing questions confronting a world with the ever growing capacity to destroy itself. The novel stays true to Twain's pessimism concerning his day and the `damned human race' ends with a truly terrifying scene. All good novels have to concern themselves with themes that go deeper than the mere story that they tell. Twain certainly does not disappoint with this effort.

    4 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-31

This book is amusing in some of the same ways that Captain Stormfield
is amusing. A modern man of the time is placed in a different, strange,
setting, and gets to make humorous observations about the natives,
    locals, functionaries and authority figures.

Here, the device is time travel, plonking a 19th century American in the middle of a fantasy version of King Arthur's court.

    1 out of 5 stars Leftist propoganda.......2007-07-23

I had to read this book for a college class and at first I thought...oh cool, a time travel story. This book was anything but. It's nothing more than a 400 page rant about how evil wealthy people are, in contrast to the inherent goodness of the oppressed poor. He stereotypes shamelessly throughout this book. And despite the fact that both the narrator and people who read this book seem to assert that this tale is set in the 6th century it absolutely is not. You did not have castles, titled lords and ladies, a powerful Roman Catholic church, and French sounding names in 6th century Britain! Had Mr. Twain been more balanced in his writing and more historically factual I personally would have found this book a great deal more readable. A story about someone in the 19th century transported to a time and place where Britons and Anglo-Saxons were fighting for control of the land would have been even more fascinating. As it stands, anyone looking for a time travel story is going to get little more than a meandering, endless, and plotless leftwing spiel.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Clashing of Cultures.......2007-06-30

Hank Morgan is a typical Connecticut resident living in the late eighteen-hundreds. He is a clever foreman and loves the technology of his time. One day while at work, Hank is hit with a crowbar and knocked out. When he is finally revived, he finds himself in Camelot in the year 528. Things seem pretty bleak for Hank, who is immediately taken prisoner by a knight and sentenced to die. He uses the knowledge that a solar eclipse is due in order to gain a reputation as a powerful magician, more powerful even than Merlin.

Hank quickly adjusts to his position as adviser to King Arthur, and uses his expertise in the areas of science and engineering whenever he sees an opportunity. Soon all of Camelot is connected by telephones and telegraphs, trains are beginning to be built, and knights travel the countryside on bicycles. Hank introduces American systems of money and has plans to turn Camelot into a democracy after Arthur's death.

But Hank has enemies, including Merlin and the church. These enemies are powerful and capitalize on the superstitions of the people living in Camelot.

This was a very clever book, highlighting some of the weaknesses of a Medieval society, and the things a modern capitalist might do to improve them. Parts of it were slow, but it is a very old book, written in a different style than today's stories, so that is understandable.

5 out of 5 stars Waaaay ahead of his time.......2007-04-14

I remember I loved reading Tom Sawyer when I was a kid and I continued reading him in college. So when I started reading this, I had high expectations - not disappointed. This story is waaaaay ahead of its time in terms of morality and the social order. There's also a subdued hilarity that sometimes isn't so subdued as the main character will voice criticism or state his views on a wide variety of subjects. Twain wrote this in 1899 but it sounds like something you would hear from someone a 100 years later. It could just be timeless. Do yourself a favor and read this book because its highly entertaining, very humorous, and definitely an excellent read.

    2 out of 5 stars I was disappointed........2007-01-09

Connecticut 24/7 was a disappointment to me. The cover proclaims ,
"Amazing Photographs of An Extraordinaty State". I found that approx. 50%
of the photographs did not give someone a "view" of Connecticut , but instead were somewhat "generic" in what they portrayed.
"a child reading a book in bed","a baby looking out a house window",
"children in art class","dogs in the back of a car","a man in a bathroom"
Photos such as these , did not serve to enhance my visual perception of
what Connecticut looks like. Do not get me wrong , "all" the photos are
indeed beautiful. It is just that I expected a book of photos of the
State of Connecticut, to have each photograph show a scence that was
    "unique" to Connecicut.

5 out of 5 stars I want one for myself!.......2005-06-30

I purchased this book to give to someone else as a gift -- someone from another country who might like to see a little bit of what life is like here in Connecticut. But now that I've seen it, I'm going to order another for myself. This is the most beautiful book that seems to capture the state we're from perfectly. I truly want to leave it out on my coffee table to look at time and time again and I have NEVER said that about a book in my entire life (except for personal photo albums perhaps).

    Book Description

In his first full-length poetic work, celebrated poetry anthologist Paul B. Janeczko creates a stirring fictional account of the 1944 Hartford circus fire.

One summer afternoon in 1944, hundreds of circus lovers crowded under the big top in Hartford, Connecticut, breathlessly waiting for the show to begin. Minutes later, the event took a horrifying turn when a fire broke out and spread rapidly through the tent, claiming the lives of 167 souls and injuring some 500 more. Sixty years later, Paul B. Janeczko recalls that tragic event by bringing to life some unforgettable voices — from circus performers to seasoned fans, from firefighters and nurses to the little girl known as Little Miss 1565, a child whose body was never claimed. This spare, startling book uses the lyrical power of language to render historical tragedy with a human face, leaving an emotional impact young readers will not soon forget.

    2 out of 5 stars Worlds Afire.......2006-05-25

I am very excited about the new format of books written in poetry, some of my favorites being "Love That Dog" and "Shakespeare Bats Cleanup." However, both of these are fictional stories and the format really DOES NOT work for non-fiction.

The poems feel uninspired and would have been much better expressed in, say, a historical fiction novel. Also, the book offers us no real information about the fire or the circus.

If you would like to get books written in poetry, please check out "Love That Dog" by Sharon Creech or "Shakespeare Bats Cleanup" by Ron Koertge. Don't even bother with this one.

1 out of 5 stars vanity press personified..........2005-04-04

a glaring example of 'vanity press,' this 'author' has compiled thoroughly un-extraordinary prose and passes it off as something of importance and value. This thing was on a 99 cent table at books-a-million. I LOST 99 cents. Just wretched...

    3 out of 5 stars Sally Weissman...the Nurse.......2005-01-27

Paul Janeczko's collection of poems tells the story of the infamous Hartford Circus fire of 1944. From the gradual points of view of performers, parents and anxoius children, Janeczko leads his readers through the excitement of the Big Top event, to the horror and tragedy of the fire. From parents, freaks and photographers, the reader is lead through the terror and confusion of the fire and the anguish of the hospital afterward. The best poem in my opinion was not saved for last. The touching point of view of sally Weissman, the nurse attending the emergency room to which so many victems were rushed is this books most powerful moment.

    4 out of 5 stars Worlds Afire.......2004-05-14

The book Worlds Afire is the best drama book I have ever read but since I'm only 13 I'm sure that there is a lot more better drama books out there I just haven't heard of yet. This book is about "a circus gone bad" as I would say. It is also a true story that is going to haunt my dreams for the rest of my life. That's how good of a picture the book draws for you as you read. As your reading you can just see all the people dying in the torturous flames of the Hartford fire. The book takes place during the circus act of the tigers. The worst thing about the fire is that there is only one escape for all those people to get out of and barely half of them did. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone shape, color or size.

      Book Description

Lois Orswell (1904-1998) was a pioneering collector of abstract expressionist art and modern sculpture. She was notable not only for the quality of her acquisitions but also for her exceptional position as a woman collector at a time when men dominated the art world. Orswell focused her attention on sculpture and drawings, rather than paintings, and her collection features the work of such canonical artists as Kline, de Kooning, Rodin, Calder, Moore, Nevelson, and many others. Of all these artists, none was more important than David Smith -- arguably the greatest American sculptor of the twentieth century -- and the book highlights the close connection between collector and artist.

This handsome volume publishes for the first time the correspondence between Orswell and Smith, which sheds important new light on the sculptor's personality and professional practice. The book also tells the history of the Orswell Collection, which numbers over 340 objects and is housed at the Harvard University Art Museums.

This book is published to coincide with an exhibition at the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, from September 21, 2002 to February 16, 2003.

A Matter of Degree is a true story and the definitive account of a renowned fire investigator and the nine-year mission of the heart that led to the discovery of arson and political conspiracy in the 1944 Ringling circus fire, an American tragedy equal in scope to the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. LT. RICK DAVEY's internationally publicized re-investigation of the celebrated case resolved all of the mysteries swirling around the suspicious blaze that destroyed the Ringling circus and killed 168 people--including a beautiful but unknown 8-year-old girl who was known for 50 years as "Little Miss 1565."

5 out of 5 stars Great historical account of a sad day in American history........2007-05-13

As a Professor of Fire Science I am constantly seeking out books having to do with great historical fires in American. These books are to be used as course research papers by my students and typically are not available via the library network. I trust many of my students are buying their copies from Amazon.com a name that can be trusted.

1 out of 5 stars Classic 15 minutes of fame.......2005-04-04

for non writers who manipulate everything to suit their conceptions. the FACTS completely debunk this book. Thankfully, these men will fade; the true mysteries remain unanswered waiting, perhaps, for someone without personal gain to cull through, define and present. What a nasty book.

      3 out of 5 stars Fascinating, but..........2004-03-27

I hope no one was paid to EDIT this book (I can't believe anyone did.) Facts mentioned in passing in the first half, are "astonishing" when discovered by investigator Davey in the second half. And author Massey is WAY too attached to the word "ironically" (and he bats around .500 when it comes to applying it correctly.) But I'm glad I read it, as I've been interested in the story since seeing a reproduction of a newspaper front page showing Emmett Kelly helping to fight the fire.
I wonder if another book will someday deal with another "lost victim" who's mentioned briefly... the one supposedly carried into a hospital by his uncle... (I think I'll go get "The Circus Fire" for now.)

1 out of 5 stars REVISIONIST HISTORY OF THE WORST KIND.......2002-09-21

This book is poorly written, yet the subject is fascinating. The love Rick Davey has for himself often brings the narrative to an abrupt halt. But the worst part is that Mr. Davey is so intent on finding a solution to the mystery of Little Miss 1565 and proving himself to be a wonderful investigator that he twists the facts to make them fit his theory. I didn't discover this until I read another book on the Hartford Fire. Mr. Davey pronounces the identity of the the mysterious little girl. What he doesn't mention is that dental records disprove his identification. This really is revisionist history of the worst kind because a family was caused to suffer to assauge Mr. Davey's ego. If you are interested in this story, I recommend reading The Circus Fire by Stewart O'Nan. It is better investigated, written and much more comprehensive. It also has the merits of being much more factual than this book.

As some 9,000 people watched the Wallendas begin their high-wire act on July 6, 1944, a fire started on the sidewall of the big top at the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. The tent had been waterproofed with a mixture of 6,000 gallons of white gasoline and 18,000 pounds of paraffin; common practice for circuses at the time. In minutes, the entire tent was engulfed in flames. In the rush for the exits, people were trampled and burned--some beyond recognition. In the end, 167 were dead and 487 injured, of whom 140 required hospitalization. The city of Hartford, Connecticut, would never be the same. Stewart O'Nan brings his storytelling ability to the tragedy of The Circus Fire.

Several survivors said the one thing they will never forget about the circus fire as long as they live is the sound of the animals as they burned alive. But there were no animals.

O'Nan interviewed dozens of witnesses and examined police reports, newspaper accounts, and court documents while researching the fire. The result is an engrossing--though agonizingly painful--account of the great fire and its aftermath. He probes the tragedy's enduring mysteries--How did the fire start? Who are the unidentified victims? Who is Little Miss 1565?--and offers up conclusions of his own. He also provides remarkable vignettes of panic, heroism, and grief: Merle Evans and the band playing "The Stars and Stripes Forever," the circus disaster march, over and over; Bill Curlee, standing atop the wild animal chute throwing trapped children to safety; the Cote sisters, who made it home safely then broke down when asked why they were back so early. O'Nan tells their stories with compassion--albeit with a slight tendency toward the macabre.

Moving, saddening, gruesome--yet car-crash compelling--The Circus Fire is a gripping read. Highly recommended. --Sunny Delaney

      Book Description

The acclaimed author of A Prayer for the Dying brings all his narrative gifts to bear on this gripping account of tragedy and heroism-the great Hartford circus fire of 1944.

Halfway through a midsummer afternoon performance, Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus's big top caught fire. The tent had been waterproofed with a mixture of paraffin and gasoline; in seconds it was burning out of control, and more than 8,000 people were trapped inside. Drawing on interviews with hundreds of survivors, O'Nan skillfully re-creates the horrific events and illuminates the psychological oddities of human behavior under stress: the mad scramble for the exits; the hero who tossed dozens of children to safety before being trampled to death.

Brilliantly constructed and exceptionally moving, The Circus Fire is history at its most compelling.

      1 out of 5 stars The Big Top...No, A Big Flop.......2007-02-17

This is a really horrific story with details that the faint of heart won't want to read about but O'Nan does a terrible job of weaving together the many different stories of survivors and those who worked to sort out the chaos after the fire.

His style of writing is awkward unnatural and clumsy. He adds confusing tid-bits related to the story that seem to have no purpose but to further confuse the reader. There were a lot of people to keep track of and I found it difficult to do.

I almost felt like he was speaking in a different language sometimes because his style of writing was just so unnatural. I often found myself wondering what was being said, almost like he was using slang that I'm not familiar with. And sometimes making reference to things that really needed further explanation, like referencing the fact that the town would not be celebrating the anniversary of Tom Thumb's arrival.

I thought the story was compelling and has all the ingredients for a really great book but this isn't a great book. If you want to read it loan it from the library save your money for Eric Larson's The Devil in the White City. I love to think about the book Larson would have written about the big top circus fire of '44.

If you want to read something by Stuart O'Nan try A Prayer For the Dying it's a dark story but very well written.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT MEMOIR OF THE CIRCUS FIRE.......2007-01-25

I read this book and I really enjoyed it. A poignant, memorable, sad, moving and touching story of one of the most tragic events in the state of CT. I enjoyed all the old pictures, the stories, and the memories in this book about the fire. It told of the aftermath also. It was well written and Mr O' NAN spend a lot of time researching material for this great book. If anyone wants to read about this event, then this is the book for you. I bought this in hardcover also for keeps. I enjoyed this book immensely since I am a history buff. It also told about Little Miss 1565, and the trial. Mr. O'Nan goes into great depth about this subject making it easy to understand.

4 out of 5 stars 'Just The Facts' style is a strength.......2007-01-15

I never read any of O'Nan's fiction, so this is my first encounter with his writing style. The Great Circus Fire is the kind of story that most writers would embellish to pull at the heart strings....they would bastardize it in an Oprah kind of way. O'Nan, to his credit, lets the human drama flow from the facts of the story itself. This is what makes The Circus Fire one of the top 10 books I've read in the past 5 years.

I agree with some of the other reviewers that at times the narrative is cluttered by the seemingly endless cast of characters. However, I didn't find it that hard to follow the narrative as O'Nan did a great job of bringing each individual into contrast with the others.

PS: I also listened to the audio version. It was extrememly well done with Dick Hill doing an exceptional great narration.

      5 out of 5 stars Frighteningly Flammable!.......2006-12-04

This is an absolutely compelling account of the disastrous Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey circus fire in Hartford Connecticut on July 6, 1944: "The tent had been waterproofed with a mixture of 6,000 gallons of white gasoline and 18,000 pounds of paraffin; common practice for circuses at the time. In minutes, the entire tent was engulfed in flames. In the rush for the exits, people were trampled and burned--some beyond recognition. In the end, 167 were dead and 487 injured, of whom 140 required hospitalization." The details are at times ghastly and extremely sad, and O'Nan's writing is such that he places you directly in the tent, with the fiery canvas raining down on all sides. Highly recommended!

      4 out of 5 stars Moving Account.......2006-03-28

On the afternoon of July 6, 1944, a fire broke out during a performance of the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus in Hartford, Connecticut. The circus tent had been waterproofed with gasoline and paraffin and the fire spread quickly with 167 people (mostly women and children) ultimately dying and many others horribly burned. "The Circus fire" details the events leading up to the fire (although the worst, this was not the first fire to hit the circus), the fire itself and the ensuing panic, and the aftermath of the fire, up until 1999. There are accounts from victims of the fire, the firefighters, circus performers, and neighbors that helped out, as well as many pictures that show the horrible results of the fire. The book follows several survivors through their recovery and how they are doing years after the fire.

"The Circus Fire" is a well-written and well-researched book. Stewart O'Nan is a gifted writer and his description of the fire and the frantic attempts of the circusgoers to escape are written so that the reader can picture what is happening as they read the book. In fact, he described it so well that I had to put the book aside at times because I was having nightmares about the fire. His description of the confusion after the fire as parents searched frantically for their missing children and how neighbors and strangers pitched in to help is equally moving (and unsettling at times as some neighbors actually charged a fee for the victims to use their phones). He mentions Little Miss 1565 who died in the fire and was never identified despite the fact that her face was barely burnt (O'Nan successfully debunks the theory that Little Miss 1565 was Eleanor Cook). Her story will haunt the reader as will the story of Raymond Erickson who was taken to a hospital and whose clothes were found there but his body was never located. Also moving is the story of how the survivors dealt with the aftermath of the fire; many had nightmares years after the fire.

The only problem I had with the book is that it switched from person to person and it was often hard to keep track of who was who, especially when there were long gaps between their story. I wish there had been a list of victims at the back of the book or at least a list of the fate of the people specifically mentioned in the book.

"The Circus Fire" is a moving account of a real life tragedy.

          Book Description

In Carriages and Clocks, Corsets and Locks, the editors and contributors trace the rise and fall of New Haven, Connecticut, as an industrial city. While New Haven's story is typical of many thriving cities during the American Industrial Revolution--fascinating to preservationists, urban and landscape historians, architects, industrial archaeologists, and community historians--it is atypical as well. Most American industrial cities relied on the manufacture of a single product, but New Haven diversified, fabricating over one hundred assorted manufactured goods at the turn of the twentieth century. In a remarkable feat of historical continuity, Carriages and Clocks, Corsets and Locks explores the origins, preservation, reclamation, and reuse of the extant industrial sites and firmly iterates a unique sense of place for modern citizens of this post-industrial city. Five scholarly narrative essays interpret specific sites, and detailed historical profiles are included for sixteen selected industrial sites located on or near New Haven's harbor, including the Quinnipiac Brewery and the Candee Rubber Company. More than one hundred historically significant illustrations depict historical and modern views of sites, the products manufactured there, and New Haven's working people. Maps and tables illustrate the progress of the city's urban development from the seventeenth through the mid-twentieth centuries. Based on primary source material including land and fire department records, city directories, newspaper articles, maps, and personal accounts, this book is the culmination of the Industrial Heritage Project of the New Haven Preservation Trust's mission to evaluate and document the city's historic industrial sites and to produce educational and advocacy programs for preservation efforts.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource - Beautiful Book.......2005-02-08

When this book arrived it was a surprise how big it is, and how beautifully made. The pages are large, 12 by 11 inches, and there are lots of illustrations and photos. The information is extensive. It is very well organized, and each section has a good bibliography after it to facilitate further research. Whether you are interested in the New Haven area, particular areas of industry such as clockmaking or carriage manufacturers, workplaces in the proceeding centuries, or urban planning and development, you will find interesting and useful information in this book.
