Book Description

A must-have for designers, not to mention that quirky group in love with type for type’s sake (you know who you are), Typology is the most visually dynamic compendium of typefaces on the market. Steven Heller and Louise Fili, two of the most admired and respected designers working today, cover everything from the classic elegance of the late 19th century to the fractured hypermedia of today. Organized by historical era and country of origin, each section introduces the culture and aesthetic of the period, discusses how individual styles developed, and offers insights into the artistry of key typographers and foundries. Expertly assembled and thoughtfully written, no other book encompasses this wealth of type styles in historical context. Its pages are profusely illustrated with hundreds of complete alphabets, and such original artifacts as typesheets, catalogs, broadsides, posters, and many other primary source examples. In all, Typology is the long-awaited type encyclopedia destined to be a standard reference work for years to come.

3 out of 5 stars Not to be taken too seriously.......2007-08-04

This book is unfortunately popular in many Typology and Type and Image courses. This was a required read in one of my early core classes.

The book is mediocre all around. The beginning chapters give the reader a crash course in type through the ages, while the later chapters, commenting on the current age, are heavily opinionated and overwhelmingly biased. It is difficult to take in information while the authors allow their personal tastes and preferences to slip through so regularly.

While I suppose this book is fine for a student who is just looking to pass a quiz, or an individual who wants to dapple in typographic history to impress their friends, it isn't a resource to be taken very seriously. The book does a fairly good job in explaining the history of type setting from hot metal to the digital age and the spread of styles through different European countries but anyone truly interested in expanding their knowledge on the subject should look towards another source.

Design wise this book also lacks. While it offers a fair amount of full color large examples from each era the page set up is rather confusing and disjointed. The first page of every chapter has extremely leaded, open kerned type and an awkward image smack dab in the middle of the page. Since the text is not set in columns you must read through the image and across the page. Not too easy on the eyes since the type is so open.

This shouldn't be hailed as an excellent type resource. It is a decent illustration of various type styles explained in layman's terms.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book for any designer.......2007-02-19

I purchased this book as a text book for a Type and Image class, and I was pleased all around with the book. Not only is it well-produced with great, full-color images, thick pages and a flexible yet durable cover; it is well written giving the reader a good background in type and graphic design from the Victorian era right up to and including the digital age. After reading this book, I am much more knowledgeable of designer's names, type faces they created, aesthetics and theories of design. The book is divided into chapters based on design movements such as Victorian, Art Nouveau, Dada, Avant Garde and Commercial Modernism allowing the reader to find specifically what they want. Within each chapter, they talk about how these movements affected design in different regions of the world, and they touch on major products and designers of each era and region.

This is a great book for any design student or professional to have in their library. Great content and the perfect reference book to have on hand. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book with Great Insight.......2007-02-07

I have read many type books in my career, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The examples and historic value are insightful, thoughtful, and well illustrated by examples of each movement.
I bought this book and used it several times as references for my class. This is a wonderful book, easy to read, and I would recommend this book to anyone studying graphic design.

This book stands out and I would bought this book twice because I lost the first one.

1 out of 5 stars A typographic abomination.......2005-12-18

It's pretty clear that the other reviewers of this book share the authors' fascination with type as a design element rather than as a means of communication.

If it were only a matter of taste, however, I'd be able to shrug it off. In fact, the authors display in the design of the text of this book their indifference -- or hostility -- to what most typographers regard as good type design for readability.

The Introduction, and the intros to each section, are set in what appears to be about 14/28 on a 7-inch measure -- far too long for comfortable reading, even with that much leading.

Worse, given such a generous measure, the text is still spaced abominably -- e.g., page 10, where a hyphen break leaves two letters from "typehouses" at the beginning of a line. Even the spacing in the narrow columns that accompany the illustrations in each section is atrocious; for people who are so concerned with the way type looks, they seem totally unconscious of the way that spacing affects color.

In many places, it's clear that the text was padded (with circumlocutions) to fit the space allotted to it on a page, and in others it appears that the spacing was adjusted to fill out the page. I won't even mention the typos...

Unfortunately for these authors, I had recently bought and read "The Complete Manual of Typography" by James Felici and "Thinking With Type" by Ellen Lupton, both of which are real books on typography that are eminently readable -- and practice what they preach. The Felici book, in particular, is a treasure.

Jan Tschichold, one of the leaders of Die Neue Typografie, ultimeately recanted and became one of the masters of classical typography. The authors of "Typology" should follow his example, and you should not buy this book if you're anything but a graphic designer who's looking for ways to use type that have nothing to do with actually reading it.

Because this is not a book to be read: it's a book to be looked at. If I'd had the opportunity to preview it in detail, I'd never have wasted the money; and the chances that I'll ever open it are slim to none, while the Felici book I mentioned earlier will be at my side whenever I set type.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable.......2004-05-12

This book, which is a close cousin of Heller's and Fili's Deco/Modern series ("Deco Type", "French Modern", "Deco Espana", etc.), is not just a book of fonts. It has plenty of those, and in complete form, so you can use them, but the emphasis is on excellent graphic design and how distinctive, intelligently-used fonts feature in it. This is made vivid with lots of illustration (much of it in color) and lots of text, which is informative, insightful, and very analytical. This is an essential reference and educational tool: students should consider it a small investment, and I can't imagine a professional designer being without it around the office.

The emphasis is rightly placed on early to mid-twentieth century design, but the book is fairly comprehensive, with enough of the Victorian Era and the Digital Age to justify its subtitle.

The book itself is a nicely-bound softcover with thick pages and good, clear reproduction.

5 out of 5 stars Literally Amazing for the Price.......2007-06-08

I'm a collector of tarot decks and so I have quiiiite a few of them under my belt. I ordered this one on recommendation of a friend, and really didn't expect much out of a deck set that was under $25 with the book, box and all. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Victorian Romantic Tarot is a rare breed indeed, delivering far more than its blurb promises.

The cards are fantastic. This husband and wife team are the reigning King and Queen of the collage. They have taken some gorgeous images from turn of the century wood cuts and parlayed them into an astonishingly readable deck of tarot that nearly follows the Rider-Waite/Smith interpretation schema. The book is also well written and easy to read and follow, giving not only tips about card reading, but also a mini art history lesson with the relating of the birth of the deck.

I would highly recommend this deck for anyone interested in the Tarot. Newbies and old-hands alike will find much to be treasured here.

      5 out of 5 stars A Vibrant Tarot Deck--My Favorite.......2007-05-14

As a professional reader with over a dozen tarot decks, I have used the Victorian Romantic Tarot non-stop since receiving it. The depth and intesity of the colors, along with the Victorian era artistry drew me in and I haven't turned back (prior to this deck, The Golden Tarot by Kat Black was my favorite).
In readings I find the images stimulating: there is little traditional adherence to the Waite symbols, especially in the Minor Arcana--in fact, hardly any cups, swords, wands or pentacles appear in the minor pips at all. Instead the people tell the story--a complaining child who appears not to be satisfied with his playmates is depicted in the Five of Swords; a troop of stage performers entertains a crowd in the Four of Wands--this non-traditional perspective expanded the card meanings for me.
The Major Arcana is stunning: I adore the depiction of the Devil as a winged, mythical woman bearing flowers and jewels with a smile, and the Star is one of the most beautiful I've seen.
I would recommend this deck for those beyond the beginner level---enjoy it!

4 out of 5 stars The Victorian Romantic Tarot.......2007-03-12

The Victorian Romantic Tarot is a beautiful deck considering the pictures came from actual paintings. The minor arcana has often not the usual indications of the card you are used to seeing and that gives you a little freedom in the reading of the card which is unique and different. The four stars does not reflect what I think of the deck at all; it reflects the material that the cards are made of that did disappoint. They are thinner and do stick together making it hard to fan them out.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderfull deck, it flows!.......2006-12-24

I just received my Victorian Romantic tarot , and was so thrill.
The packaging was nice. The cards are very beautiful, somewhat unusual and intriguing at first, a little different from what one expect, but very close from the Rider-Waite interpretation. It is very hard to describe.

At first, I didn't dare to use them. This is the first deck that gave me this strange feeling, but after a few days, I just can't leave them alone. And I love them.

Sure the cards are beautiful, very beautiful and frankly very more striking than the scan on the net. The printing is very well done, sharp and crisp, the cards are flexible and thin, some complain, but it is very fine for me and they seem resistant enough. And they are easy to mix.

The deck is really striking, and I am very thrill with it. It was love at first sight and I know that this love will last. I would buy it again! And again n gold!

By the way, I love so much these pictures that I ordered a regular kit from Amazon just to get the book and the descriptions of the sources and inspiration!.

I just received my secon Victorian Romantic tarot, I loved so much the deck thaht I wanted the book. And once again I am trilled.

The packaging was nice, just that I would have enjoy a little cardboard box to keep the deck after. Beside that, the cards are very beautiful, somewhat unusual and intriguing at first, a little different from what one expect, but very close from the Rider-Waite interpretation. It is very hard to describe.

I'm using the Longman Anthology of the Romantics and their Contemporaries (3d edition) for the first time in my 3d-year Romantics course (enrolment 88 and counting!) -- I would like to thank the editors for doing a fantastic job -- the introductory essay (pp. 3-29) is truly unparallelled for clarity, scope, and intelligence -- absolutely filled to the brim with great, challenging ideas. The headnotes provide a meaningful, detailed historical background. Excellent, well annotated selections -- the notes are great too -- not condescending, not entirely ruled by the editors' obsessions, finely articulated. What a sane, sensible, well balanced, erudite anthology! Congratulations and thank you !

2 out of 5 stars Not very good.......2003-12-04

I'm not a huge fan of Medieval literature, and perhaps this book is to blame. I think I've been spoiled by the Norton and Bevington anthologies I've used in other classes, because this was truly a let-down. If you're a prof looking for a good book to use for class, have your students spend the extra twenty-spot and get a Norton.

      Book Description

"He was a man who often was incapable of conducting himself properly in the most elementary social interactions. His only continuing contacts with women were limited to his mother, nieces, and housekeepers. He was a man who knew the power of money and desired it, but refused to work for it, preferring to live off the sweat of his family and long-suffering friends, whom he often insulted even as they paid his bills."--from the book

This, then, was Oliver Heaviside, a pioneer of modern electrical theory. Born into a low social class of Victorian England and dying in poverty as a recluse, Heaviside (in between) made advances in mathematics, by introducing the operational calculus; in physics, where he formulated the modern-day expressions of Maxwell's Laws of electromagnetism; and in electrical engineering, through his duplex equations. This acclaimed biography is the only one devoted to Oliver Heaviside. Now available in paperback with a new preface by the author, it will appeal to historians of technology and science, as well as to scientists and engineers who wish to learn more about this remarkable man.

This book has a nice mix of scientific history and mathematical information. It's not just pages of equations, but they are there to help explain the concepts. Also the tech notes are great for those of us who like to see how it all works out. I would recommend this book to engineers, scientists, mathematicians, or just people who enjoy a little history of science and technology. Heaviside is quite an interesting person.

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing..........2003-10-03

I am very interested in the history of sex. That is one course I'd like to teach after I get my PhD. This book just took me back a little further into sexual history. I was surprised at how old some sexual terms and parts of the body are. I was also surprised with certain actions the characters performed. Today, many of these sexual acts are fully accepted. However, I would have figured the Victorians would have been uptight even in sex. A major misconception.

Finally I'm finding out one poem is even older than I thought. "This is my pistol, this is my gun. This one's for fighting, this one's for fun." I'm trying to find erotica and sexual information even older now. It'll be funny to see just how old that poem might be.

4 out of 5 stars Not for the faint at heart.......2003-08-15

I studied the true Victorian Era for 2+ years and am still intrigued with books relating to the ways of that time. Finally mustering enough nerve to read something provocative, I purchased this book. Lets just say it is exceptionally capable of "stirring" one.

      4 out of 5 stars Victorian Tales.......2002-03-07

Stories are well written by known authors. Many people might love this book. I am not one of them, however.

5 out of 5 stars Erotica at its Best.......2001-06-13

If you want real erotica instead of the so-called erotica of today, then this is the book for you. Steamy, steamy, steamy!

3 out of 5 stars you just gotta love it.......2001-05-22

I just couldn't stop reading this book, by the more I read I discovered more secret wishes in my soal, you just gotta love it.

      Book Description

The traditional image of the Victorian woman presents her as strait-laced and prudish, her clothing an outward sign of her sexual repression and exploitation. This situation supposedly persisted until the Women's Rights Movement and World War I forced the world to acknowledge that women were
liberated individuals with legs. Yet Valerie steele demonstrates that eroticism formed the basis for the Victorian ideal of feminine beauty and fashion--indeed, that the concepts of beauty and fashion are essentially erotic. She shows that, far from being passive "sex objects," Victorian women,
like their modern counterparts, themselves chose to emulate an erotic ideal as an aspect of their own self-fulfillment. Even the notorious corset was neither fetishistic nor an unhealthy instrument of torture, she argues, although its comlex and ambivalent sexual symbolism aroused controversy.
Fashion and Eroticism shows how the New Look of "sexy" modern naturally from within the pre-war world of fashion and not as part of an intifashion movement.
Steele's conclusions are based on prodigious documentary evidence, including visual and material research, in costume collections in the United States, Great Britain, Europe, and even Japan. Fashiona and Eroticism is not only a radical revision of the Conventional understanding of Victorian
fashion; it is a major contribution to the histyory of women and sexuality.
      About the Author:
Valerie steele received her Ph.D. from Yale University in 1983, and was the 1984 First Ladies' Fellow at the Division of Costume, National Museum of American History, the Smithsonian Institution.

5 out of 5 stars Quoted from inside cover:.......2002-01-15

In this fascinating new study, Valerie Steele shows how eroticism formed the basis of the Victorian ideal of feminine beauty and fashion, indeed, how the very concepts of beauty and fashion are in essence erotic. Far from being passive sex objects, Victorian women, like their modern counterparts, chose to emulate an erotic ideal as an aspect of their own self fulfillment and were not merely presenting themselves as men wanted to see them.

Fashion And Eroticism is not only a radical revision of our conventional understanding of Victorian fashion; it is also a major contribution to the history of women and sexuality. Steele offers a powerful and convincing new interpretation of the Victorian woman, who has traditionally been presented as strait-laced and prudish, her clothing an outward sign of her sexual repression and exploitation. Steele shows that the Victorians were, in fact, well aware that women had legs. Even the notorious corset was neither fetishistic nor an unhealthy instrument of torture, although its complex and ambivalent sexual symbolism aroused controversy.

Steele explodes the myth that progress triumphed over fashion. She explains how the twentieth century look of sexy, healthy beauty evolved from within the prewar world of fashion, and not as part of an anti fashion or dress reform movement. Her conclusions are based on prodigious documentary, visual, and material research (including the study of costume collections in the United States, great Britain, Europe, and even Japan), set within a sophisticated interpretive framework. Her use of psychoanalytic theory to explain the connection between fashion and eroticism is both lucid and persuasive, and her discussion of eroticism is sensible and precise, a far cry from the usual prurient and anecdotal histories of sexuality. Fashion And Eroticism approaches its subject from the perspective of the most recent work in womenýs history and concluded that fashion and feminism are by no means irreconcilable.

Valerie Steele received her Ph.D. in history from Yale University in 1983, and was the 1984 First Ladies Fellow at the Smithsonian Institution.

Once there was a little girl--an orphaned African princess--who narrowly escaped death by human sacrifice in a West African village in 1850. A British sea captain named Frederick E. Forbes saved her life by talking King Gezo of Dahomey into giving the girl to Queen Victoria of England as a gift: "She would be a present from the King of the blacks to the Queen of the Whites." As impossible as this tale sounds, it is a true one. Award-winning author Walter Dean Myers--piecing together her story from letters he found in a rare book and ephemera shop in London--paints a hauntingly detached portrait of the small African princess whom the heroic captain named Sarah Forbes Bonetta.

We follow her charmed but unlucky life as the Queen's protégée through a succession of British middle-class households, beginning with the Forbes home. Because of her celebrated association and frequent visits with the Queen, Sarah grows up in an unusual position of privilege, education, and celebrity. On the flip side, she is keenly aware that her decisions are not her own, and as a rescued orphan under the Queen's protection, her life's path is dictated by those acting in what they perceive to be her best interests. It is hard not to feel that it was cruel of her protectors to wrench her (more than once in her life) from the adopted family she adores, and eventually to encourage her to marry a West African businessman whom she clearly stated she could never love, and who would take her away from her adopted country. As the epilogue states, "She was both unfortunate in her losses, and fortunate that those losses were not greater.... She seemed to find a measure of comfort wherever she was, but was destined to be apart from the world in which she lived." This story, rich with historic prints, photographs, newspaper clippings, excerpts from Queen Victoria's diary, and Sarah's letters, is both fascinating and tragic. We have Myers to thank for rescuing this fine woman again--this time from the forgotten shelf of a London bookstore. (Ages 11 and older)

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and easy to read........2006-07-13

My son had to pick two books off of a large list to read over the summer for school. After reading the other reviews of this book, we picked it. It was a wonderful choice. The book was very interesting, fast paced, well written and easy to read. I read it in 3 hours, and my son was able to read in in a few nights without any complaints of boredom.

      5 out of 5 stars Why Isn't Hollywood Calling???.......2001-09-08

If any literary giant needs to have his work adapted to film, it is Myers. As one of the premier writers of fiction for juveniles, the author has added another significant piece to his long line of classics. This one tells the story of a little-known African princess who comes under the wing of England's legendary Queen Victoria.

Not only does the book reveal the horrors of the African slave trade, the atrocities that some tyrants inflict on their enemies, and the class system that pervades much of a "civilized" society, it is a marvelous tale of a girl who overcomes such obstacles and becomes the darling of English society.

Although Sarah's life is brief, it is a memorable one as the character grows from frightened child to a loving mother.
I am recommending that all my students read this book as well as others by Myers. Now, if only someone in "Tinsel Town" would discover this fine author.

I'd much rather see his stories on the big screen than any about a teenaged wizard.

      3 out of 5 stars Good book!.......2001-02-18

I think this is a very well written book. I think that Walter Dean Myers is an amazing writer and that it is great he found this fantastic girl that many have never heard of.

      5 out of 5 stars What I Think!.......2001-02-07

The book, At Her Majesty's Request was the most wonderful book I've read because it tells the story of how Sarah Bonetta overcomed so many problems. First w/ the horror of watching her parents being killed, and then almost being sacrificed by the slave holders because of who she was and where she lived. Then when she was saved by a white man whom she couldn't even understand becase she spoke a different language. And then soon after that she learned how to speak english and then she became friends w/ the Queen of England, Queen Victoria. So the book to me was very heart-warming and I hope you love the book too! Go Wells Wolverines!

4 out of 5 stars Poignant and Unlikely Story of African Princess.......2000-08-14

"At Her Majesty's Request: An African Princess in Victorian England" tells the life story of Sarah Forbes Bonetta, who was born an African Egbado princess, captured by rival Dohamans and taken to Dahomey to be murdered in a ritual sacrifice, rescued and adopted by a British naval captain, taken to England and presented to Queen Victoria, and raised under the Queen's protection in England and Sierra Leone. This handsome book is a very fine biography for young readers; it includes many excerpts from Sarah's letters and the Queen's diaries, as well as historic illustrations. Relevant information about 19th century West Africa and Britain (e.g., the Dahomey empire, the slave trade and British actions to end it, Christian missions in Africa, Sierra Leone, the British class system, women's place in society, etc.) is well presented. Although Sarah's story is interesting because of its uniqueness, much about the lives of ordinary 19th century West Africans and Europeans can be learned here. Despite the fact that there is little material concerning Sarah's life, the author has done a fine job and readers interested in Africa should be glad he did. The book contains a useful bibliography which includes "Dahomey and the Dahomans" (1851) by Frederick E. Forbes (the captain who rescued and adopted Sarah).

19th century Dahomey is also the setting of "The Viceroy of Ouidah" by Bruce Chatwin.
