Book Description
At the heart of this pioneering study - the result of exhaustive comparative research in Russian, European and American collections - is an illustrated catalogue which provides detailed descriptions of each work in the context of the artist's career and the broader artistic developments of the age. The condition, provenance, and previous location of the works are also detailed.
The catalogue is introduced by three essays: The Russian Avant-Garde, the Hungarian Avant-Garde, and the history of the collecting of Russian Avant-Garde art. The volume concludes with artists' biographies, bibliographical information, a glossary and index.
A catalogue of 59 works, written by two of the most eminent scholars in the field.

Mediterranean Architecture At Its Finest.......2006-02-05
I love these elegant books put out by Acanthus Press. This book has vivid period black and white images of great american homes in the Mediterranean style. This is a reprint of a book first realized in the 20's. The images and text really make one appreciate the craftmanship and grace of the era. They really don't build buildings. like this anymore, whether they be for residential or commercial use. If you have any interest in wondeful period images, or singular craftmanship, then you will love this book.
Primarily southern CA architecture........2005-08-15
This was a good coffee table book. Or, if you're interested in the "Mediterranean" look that would be more precisely refered to as "spanish revival" or "Santa Barbara" this is a great example of the architecture of southern CA in the earlier part of the last century. A very popular and good looking style. Only thing, for a style reference it could have used more floor plans of the homes.
Shadows on Stucco Walls.......2001-03-17
I find this book a compelling record of a style and period of architecture I love. This is a reprint of a 1929 book, the period black & white photos and drawings are well realized and reveal a lot detail. There are also plans shown for most of the houses illustrated
We would all benefit if architects, developers, landscape architects who are doing contemporary versions of Mediterranean Architecture would spend time studying these images. There is such a fine use of solid and void, plays of light shadow on extensive planar surfaces, and restrained but effective (and sometimes whimsical) use of ornament. Hey, this is not a difficult architecture, or particularly expensive to realize, but can be truly sublime and fully appropriate for Southern California where I live. This book has a lot to tell us designers about how to get it right.
Spanish American at its finest........2001-03-14
This book covers some of the best California and Florida residential architecture of the early 20th century. The photos are great and the plans are incredible. The new introduction shows the house built by the author's grandmother in the 1920s. What a life style! I highly recommend this classy reprint.

Good read and study of planning history!.......1999-08-18
My university is using this book as a text as part of our study of Planning History. It is a very good read and is unlike a textbook. Outlines planning history from 1880 to 1980.

Book Description
Carter Wiseman presents an original, readable, and literate overview of the major figures, influential movements, and landmark buildings that have defined American architecture over the past hundred years. In a survey that is "as good . . . as anyone is likely to write . . . accurate in its facts, wise and fair in its judgments"(New York Times), he focuses to a large extent on architecture's makers--the commanding figures who by force of personality and sheer artistic ability indelibly influenced its progress: Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, Philip Johnson, I. M. Pei, Robert Venturi, Louis Kahn, Frank Gehry. The triumph of modernism; the growth of architectural preservation; the eclipse of the practical arts by money, theory, and abstraction; and the uncertain future of architecture in a country that celebrates both individualism and community are just some of the issues addressed in this highly praised work. Originally published in hardcover under the title Shaping a Nation.

For students of architecture and highly recommended.......2001-02-15
Twentieth-Century American Architecture: The Buildings And Their Makers surveys the major figures, influential movements, and landmark buildings that have identified and defined the American architecture over the past century. Carter Wiseman's informative text is enhanced with photographs as he focuses on the architects whose personalities and abilities indelibly influenced architectural progress. These figures range from Louis Sullivan Frank Lloyd Wright, and Philip Johnson, to I.M. Pei, Robert Venturi, and Louis Kahan. Twentieth-Century American Architecture is an impressive, authoritative, narrative history that is "must" reading for students of architecture, and highly recommended, accessible reading for the non-specialist general reader with an interest in the development of American architectural trends and the men behind them.

The ideal book for the intended audience.......2007-07-21
This books was exactly what I was looking for. I do work on Victorian houses and this book puts everything in perspective. I can now tell what woodwork belongs in what house and not guess anymore. I can explain to customers what they have or had in their house and give a brief history behind their mill work. After reading this book you will be able to act as an authority on restoration work. When giving bids or discussing potential jobs with a client I can speak confidently and sell my services much more effectively. If you work on old houses the knowledge you will gain in this book will set you apart from the average modern day carpenter. The price is small compared to the education you will get from this book. If you love Victorian woodwork as I do, this book is a must have. It would take 20 other carefully selected books and numerous hours of research to arrive at the same depth of understanding of historic mill work as this book gives you in one long afternoon of reading. This author saved me a lot of time and confusion by producing such a book; my personal thanks!
Highly informative reference.......2005-10-17
Reading other reviews, I'm not sure why we have the overall impression that highly specialized references such as this should be bargain basement priced - the costs of writing and producing a book such as this are not inconsiderable, so I feel compelled to defend the author and publisher in that respect.
That being said, I'm perhaps the ideal customer for this book in that my home - former military quarters - was built in 1910 and re-fitted by the military at least twice during its life. Trying to figure out what is original and what is retrofitted is very challenging and this book provides an excellent guide for my purposes.
If you want pure gratification from a text with lots of color pictures you should know this is not a coffee table book, likewise, it is not a catalog. Nevertheless, I think the serious restoration-minded reader will be very satisfied, as I am.
A Little Disappointing.......2005-06-28
Like several other reviewers, I found the book to be overpriced. The book provided neither extensive and in depth narrative history NOR extensive patterns. ...and I don't believe there was one color photograph to be found. Don't buy it until you've had it in your hands.
From the author.......2005-03-07
As you try and make a decision about this book I wanted to give an explanation as the author. I noticed the reviews above and wanted to clarify the purpose of the book. I don't want you to spend $70 dollars on a book that doesn't help.
First, if you are looking for an old millwork catalog, this may not be your book. I wrote this book for architects trying to specify the correct doors, windows and moldings for historic buildings. I wrote this book for homeowners trying to figure out the millwork in their home and the subtle differences that take place during each architectural period. I wrote this book for contractors trying to restore an historic building with the proper details.
1870-1940 is a unique 70 year period in which there are numerous architectural changes that effect the moldings and millwork details of a building.
This book was written to help clarify how historic millwork was produced, who the major players were, how architectual and stylistic differences revealed themselves in the moldings and millwork of the home. I have broken out chapters by topic like windows or doors and then traced the changes in these products from 1870 to 1940. Hopefully, by reading this book you will be able to easily distinguish; a Victorian 5 panel door from an Arts and Crafts 2 panel, understand when colonades were popular and how they change, identify a Queen Anne sash, and recognize Victorian millwork from others.
I hope this helps you get a clear picture of what you are buying.
Thanks
Brent Hull
PS. I had to rate the book in order to submit this review.
Over Priced & Better References.......2004-02-09
This book is quite overpriced relative to similar books. Better titles are available from Dover (Universal Millwork Catalog), Lee Valley (Home Interiors of the 1920s), Linden Publishing (Modern Practical Joinery), Fredionia (Modern Carpentry) that cover the information and provide more information at about 1/3 to 1/4 the price for each book. It looks like that many examples are out of these books commonly available. Furthermore, this book has relatively few examples for each catagory. Before you spend the money on this book, check it out from your library or have them get it through interlibrary loan along with the other books mentioned.

The Formation of Chinese Civilization: An Archaeological Perspective
ASIN: 0300096348 |
Book Description
This richly illustrated book is the first to introduce and discuss the most important archaeological discoveries in China during the entire twentieth century. The two-volume set draws on Chinese archaeological fieldwork to address cross-disciplinary topics in archaeology, art history, epigraphy, history, and religion.
Chinese archaeology has provided materials that are prompting scholars to reconstruct or rewrite China’s history from the prehistoric period through the Imperial dynasties. New Perspectives on China’s Past is a compendium of this breakthrough research and the global scholarship that surrounds it. With some six hundred illustrations, glossary, index, and extensive bibliography, this work will be a standard reference on Chinese archaeology in the twentieth century.

DEFINITIVE PRODUCTION.......2006-05-05
(1) Description of the books: Two volumes totalling 1000 large format pages printed on high quality thick (? too thick -- see below) paper and fully replete with hundreds and hundreds of photos, maps, diagrams and a very fine text. Some photos are in black and white because of their age; most are in wonderful color. Also is included an extensive glossary of Chinese characters, very extensive bibliography (unfortunately, many/most in Chinese),
and a complete index with which I find its greatest fault (again see below).
(2) Content: The first volume consists of more subjective discussions of many subjects of art, history, archeology/anthropology, religion, and a broader picture of these subjects'
relationship to the rest of the world.
The second volume is a chronologic (chapter by chapter) description of 74 areas to be discussed.
(3) Faults: It is admitted in the introduction that to save space (and weight! -- about 5 pounds each), the bibliography to both volumes is only at the end of the FIRST volume. I have never previously experienced, in a two volume production, (rarely, but then customarily at the end of the second volume [but same inconvenience]) this cumbersome practice. So this is my major fault (more below when I analyze one portion). A minor fault is no description of the qualifications, positions, or publications of the authors -- except one elaborate one on the end paper of Mr/Mrs/Ms X. Yang, the "editor and principal author". Perhaps if the high quality and heavy paper had been a tad lighter, there could have been a separate biblography for volume 1, at its end, and likewise the one for volume 2 at its end.
(4) Analysis of one section: I have chosen that of the mausoleum and necropolis of Qin Shihuangdi (the "terra-cotta army) since this is probably the area most readers are acquainted with.
The discussion in the first volume discusses, among other matters, the possibility (author = 'probability') of western influences and its 'isolation', i.e., no previous or subsequent influences of this 'eighth wonder of the world" -- as one author states. This was most interesting, particularly (to me), since I have not seen any book later than 25 years ago on Chinese archeology+ (surely there are more recent articles in magazines and journals, 99% of which are in Chinese!)
The second volume deals with the same subject in the usual (but very fine) and descriptive manner. Here is an example of this frustrating 'bibliography' problem: On page 229 of v. 2, discussing this same subject, is, at the end: Bibliography: "Shihuangling 1975, 1978, 2001, and 2001b; . . . " Now, to check these, one must lay aside this 5 pound volume 2, and resurrect the 5 pound volume 1, to find this reference. Good luck!
Summary" This is a set which is definitive and probably will not be equalled or ??surpassed in a hundred years -- at least, probably not in English.
It is expensive to many; however the quality in every aspect is worth the money. If you can afford it, and this subject is of sufficient interest to you to spend this money, it is a MUST -- particularly, since (at least, to my knowledge) there is no one (smaller) volume covering recent knowledge -- even without the photos and extras offered in this monumental production.

Book Description
In 1946 Ove Arup, a leading engineer of the twentieth century, founded a firm of consulting engineers that brought to fruition such iconic structures as the Sydney Opera House, the Olympic Village in Beijing, London’s Millennium Bridge, the Beaubourg Centre in Paris, the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, and Kansai Airport in Japan among many others. Devoted to a “commonsense” reform of engineering and architectural practice, Arup (1895-1988) pioneered the way for modern architects and engineers to collaborate successfully and responsibly on large projects. This is the first biography of the great and versatile engineer, complete with some 80 historic photographs that have never been published before.
Peter Jones, the first researcher to have full access to the vast private Arup archives, tells the complete story of Ove Arup’s extraordinary life, his social, aesthetic, and environmental concerns, and his practical contributions during a period of political and technological upheaval. Jones also offers a revelatory new account of the Sydney Opera House and the character of those involved in its complex construction.

Book Description
Hypnotic flowering vines, black-and-white Op Art odysseys, and seas of patriotic warships are just some of the beautiful, strange, and fantastic patterns that have adorned the walls of homes the world over. In the tradition of best-seller Fabulous Fabrics of the 50s, this home decor reference book entertains while it inspires with flawless reproductions of 150 classic and unique wallpapers; many of which are drawn from the collections of the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution. Covering every decade of the century, Off the Wall celebrates robust pattern and detail in all their manifestations. Lively text and captions help to capture the designers, trends, and world events relevant to each piece, and the broader evolution of the genre, from a 1948 mural of rural America, replete with plump livestock and ripening fields, to the boldly colored abstractions produced in the 1950s by Herman Miller for MOMA. A useful resource for collectors, designers, decorators, and artists, Off the Wall is a colorful and captivating tribute to a widely appreciated medium.

wall papers design.......2007-05-09
this book is very useful for all kinds of designers. wall papers are very modern today as well as they were in the past.
today we use wall papers every where in every possibale space even in fashion stores, coffe shops and not only at houses.
this book gives us a review on the 20th century and which we can find very modern again today.
Not so wonderful.......2006-03-10
I dont think this book of wall paper pictures collection reflects the beauty, width and depth of the wallpaper design in 20th century. I have seen (and used) much better, detailed, artistic and representative examples myself.
All of the examples are from the 1920-60 period. Nothing after 1960. The book doesnt include any of the glamorous examples either. Another negative thing is all of the examples look like they are printed patterns, they give no idea about the texture, embossing and the paper type used.
If you are into the history of wallpapers this book may give you information but not much inspiring for graphic designers.
I wouldnt have bought it if i had the chance to see more pages because what you see at the Amazon.com "seach inside" feature is all this book about, same style, same not so good examples all through the book.
