This book does a great job of going over almost all the facets of starting and airbrushing. One of the most complete books I've seen.

5 out of 5 stars great info.......2007-01-16

I gave this book to my husband along with a new airbrush & it's been a great help to him, includes info that even the airbrush didn't company give.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Excellence!!.......2005-09-08

The "Ultimate Airbrush Handbook" is exactly what it's title says is! No hyperbole in the title. It covers all aspects of airbrushing, useful to everyone, including newbies like myself. Well worth the money spent!

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Airbrush Handbook.......2005-07-21

Excellent. As the title states the "ultimate". Should be the first book purchased, borrowed or stolen for the enthusiast.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2005-04-22

I've read other "how to airbrush" books, but this one is the best.
There is something for everyone from beginner (me) to advanced airbrushers.
From masking to freehand airbrushing.

Easy and simple to understand.
Once I received it and started reading it,I couldn't put it down.
So many things I thought I knew, but the book set me straight.

Other people on web forums had recommended this book, wish I had done it sooner.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Cool, but a little bit extreme..........2006-05-24

If you like custom painting, you'll find several -other- nice books about the theme. This is not the only I've got about car painting and custom painting, but in fact, is not the one I like the most...

Even if it contains nice step-by-step procedures, and goes with most of the painting proceses you may want to know, is not a great font of inspiration -for me-. It is most like a airbrushing book, that goes even in painting things that I would never paint on cars... and really hate to see on cars...

Craig Fraser is surely a very good airbrush painter, but if you are looking for some custom painting, without getting your car out of mind, I'd suggest rather to buy "how to paint flames" or "pinstripping masters"... maybe also "advanced custom painting technics", but not this book.

All in all, it is not a bad book, is just not the kind of information I like to have on my library.

5 out of 5 stars greate book.......2005-09-14

lots of step by step examples. nice guiding. not an indepth guide for choosing and using auto-colors.

5 out of 5 stars A very good book!.......2004-02-10

I've never airbrushed before I got this book, but I feel like I have a head-start after reading it. It explains things very well, like the may types of automotive paint, and demonstrates the use of stencils and freehand sheilds. He even has a computer that he can make designs with! I always thought everything was done freehand. He also explains and demonstrates how to highlight and very effective use of shading and shadows. He even shows how to do a carbon fiber effect. Very cool! I highly recommend this book. Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Imagination peaker.......2002-10-23

This book is one of the best. It motivates a person to paint-paint-paint. This book has great tips, illustrations, directions and good common-sense.

5 out of 5 stars Cheap Tricks for Cheap!!!.......2001-08-04

This is one of the best books of it's kind! I absolutely love this book! I've been a fan of Craig Fraser and Jon Kosmoski for years, and they(mostly Craig) have done a wonderful job compiling information and demonstrating various techniques in the field of automotive airbrushing. Though focused mainly on the automotive genre, these techniques can be used in any field of airbrushing!! Craig is one of a kind, and he has been a tremendous mentor to many, and a terrific teacher to "airheads" everywhere. For the price of the book, you will get priceless information! It's well written, informative, and loaded with the coolest tips and tricks!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-07-19

This book is great for beginers and good for someone a little further along. It gives you most airbrush tricks that you'l need to paint whatever you want to paint.

5 out of 5 stars If you only buy one airbrush book, this is the one!.......2006-06-07

I hate to gush but this is, imho, the single best book on airbrushing that I've seen. It covers technique from beginner to advanced. The instructions are straight forward. I suppose they could seem boring if you're an advanced artist. Since I learn from even a rehash of what I already new, I wasn't bored.

Unlike other reviewers, I wasn't disappointed because it doesn't cover painting motorcycles or helmets. The title is fairly straightforward and a good clue to what the book covers. If you're only interested in painting motorcycles, try How to Custom Paint Graphics here on Amazon.

If on the other hand, you see an airbrush as another tool in expressing yourself through art, get this book. Vero is a master at solidifying visualization. He introduced the use of shields and the book contains a template for his design for one of the most versatile shields around.

When you aren't using it for reference, I recommend putting it on the coffee table. People who drop by my apartment are instantly drawn to the cover which features an illustration of Vero's "Study of a Girl". Instant conversation starter!

Rado Vero is recognized as one of the greatest illustrators who ever lived. Reading his thoughts on airbrush and different ways to create are as invaluable as reading Da Vinci's ideas on creating perspective. It didn't bother me that it was first printed in 1983. Nothing in this book has been outmoded. In fact, many of his ideas, such as use of shields, are now the standard in art schools. I expect it to be equally as valid in 2083.

I have bought multiple copies of this book and given them to friends who are just getting into airbrushing. I expect that I will buy quite a few more before it's over.

5 out of 5 stars If you can only get one book on airbrush..........2005-09-26

... this is the one.

Covers the mechanical stuff more briefly than many, and has a nice section on fixing problems, including straightening a bent needle. Gets briskly on to the =use= of the thing, and runs a series of exercises to help you get the hang of techniques, including learning how to draw freehand. This guy is not hung up on anal-compulsive frisket cutting, but recommends a "universal mask" you can make out of a styrene or metal sheet that will do for a lot of work.

4 out of 5 stars Airbrush:The Complete Studio Handbook.......2005-07-21

Excellent book however as the title states relates mainly to studio applications and technical details. Not really applicable to air brush enthusiasts wanting to style cars or helmets etc.

5 out of 5 stars Best I've seen so far.......2002-10-20

Service was great and the book was awesome. Answered every question I had and taught me things I never thought of.

I own quite a number of books on airbrushing, some very good, some average. This book is without a doubt THE definitive book about ALL aspects on airbrushing. It is an outstanding book in every respect.
It covers more aspects of airbrushing than any other book I have seen, it is superbly produced in full colour and the clarity of text and photography is as good as it gets. Do I sound enthusiastic, you can bet on that. If there was one book that I was restricted to on this subject, I would not hesitate in recomending this book, it is just so good.
I would recomend this book as THE BEST BOOK ON AIRBRUSHING YOU CAN BUY!, you will not be disapointed.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The title should read "Airbrush Techniques for Plastic Model Kits".......2007-05-26

Actually, this book was precisely what I was looking for. I had purchased
and read several of the other airbrush instructional texts and, while they
were great in their own right, they were too generalized for my needs.
Most of them start out with how to choose an airbrush, air supply options,
etc., but then get a little too generalized as I said. They tend to talk
about airbrush techniques as applied to automotive painting, tattoo art,
and what-have-you.

The bottom line is if you are interested in learning airbrushing skills
as they apply to the detailing of plastic model kits, THIS IS THE BOOK
YOU ARE LOOKING FOR. Not only does the author cover the usual subjects
such as airbrush/air source choices, he goes on to ventilation concerns
and solutions, choices of paints and protective coatings, and other
areas.

He also presents several project examples as instructions on conceptual
areas such as modeling vinyl figures, weathering (i.e., making something
look like it's been through real-life wear and tear), as well as all those
little details that transform your kit from an overly detailed toy into a
miniature representation of the real item. I was particularly impressed
by the chapter "Adding Dirt and Rust to a '63 Chevy Impala". Here he
describes some very simple yet convincing method of taking a respectable
model kit and making it look like something that belongs in a junkyard,
right down to the grimy whitewalls and windshield wiper streaks.

For myself and others looking to make such transformations, this book
is gold. For others, it's definitely a bit too specialized and will
definitely disappoint, hence my suggestion for the title change.

4 out of 5 stars Great Info, Projects can help, but most are filler.......2007-05-11

This book helped me alot with my airbrushing skill. I wish he had written more of the general info as well as some beginner lessons. The projects are ok, I would do a coulpe mabey, but they don't help as much as beginner stroke, and shadowing lessons would have. More info on how to(try) do artwork with a single action brush. All in all a great resource.

5 out of 5 stars How to Use an Airbrush.......2007-05-06

While not an exhaustive treatment of the subject, this is a very good reference. The foundation information needed to be successful in selecting and using an airbrush for model work is provided along with a variety of sample projects that demonstrate techniques. I had prior experience with airbrushes when the book was purchased but I did learn some valuable techinques and tips through the book.

5 out of 5 stars How to Use an Airbrush .......2007-01-19

good explanation, easy to understand and the quality of the book he is excellent

3 out of 5 stars More About How to Paint A Model.......2006-09-20

This is an excellent book but the title is a bit deceptive. It spends a little bit of time at the beginning describing airbrushes but does not go into much depth. There is not much on how to select a great tool. Instead it details techniques for painting models. In this, it does a very good job.

I bought this book because I wanted to learn about airbrushing for painting model railroad cars and structures but I know absolutely nothing about them. I still know very little. I did learn some fascinating ways to paint model cars, airplanes and figurines, though.

If you want to learn techniques for doing the actual painting, especially on hobby models, this is a great book. Its illustrations are lavish and clear as are the explanations. If, on the other hand, you want to learn about the brush itself in terms of choosing one and maintaining it, look elsewhere.

Book Description

Airbrush painting is an art like any other, requiring talent and skill; but it is also a technology that, more than other art forms, calls for technical mastery of equipment used in the process. JoAnn Bortles, one of the top airbrush artists in the United States, has developed a teaching curriculum for mastering both the technology and techniques needed to be a successful airbrush artistan approach that frees her students to develop their own airbrush art. How to Master Airbrush Painting Techniques presents this curriculum in a logical, step-by-step fashion. Along with guiding readers through a series of projects, Bortles also provides the knowledge needed for developing projects. Not only does her book explain what to do in a clear, easy-to-follow manner, it explains why.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best Airbrush/Custom Painting Book.......2007-07-08

This would have to be the best book I've read about custom painting and airbrushing on cars/bikes. The book is great for the beginner (like me) who wants to know about airbrushes, suitable paints, and the techniques to start creating a custom paint job.

5 out of 5 stars How To Master Airbrush Painting Techniques .......2007-02-02

Very comprehensive. I felt the author was having a personal casual discussion with me about what I wanted to learn instead of just documenting technical information and techniques. Teaching painting techniques in writing must be a tough task, but I think the author did a good job.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a great buy!.......2007-01-19

I'll start off by saying I keep picking up this book over and over. The Troubleshooting chapter is so detailed. It covers nearly every problem I have ever had with an airbrush. I have other airbrush books and none of them have this much "fix it" info. That one chapter has saved me so much time and stress.
The rest of the book is great also. One of the learning chapters has a really fun exercise that was so easy but gave me really cool results.
The book is very easy to follow and the examples in the book can be applied to almost any airbrush project. She uses a common sense approach that takes away the complications that come up when I'm trying to learn a new technique.
And unlike my other airbrush books, it has lots of photos. The example chapters have many photos that cover each little step.
It also tells how to get great ideas to airbrush.
And I really appricated the way she also tells how to deal with how to not get discouraged when things go wrong. How to deal with the stress that comes from trying to be be artistic.
I have another of JoAnn's books and while I enjoyed that one, I like this one better.
It is also a large book with nearly 200 pages. I feel this book was a great buy.

This authoritative analysis examines thirty key paintings in detail, from 1860 to the end of the century. The artists - from Coubet to Pissaro and Toulouse-Latrec - represent almost every aspect of the Impressionist movement. A full discussion of how paint and color effects are achieved as well as the artists' training, availability of materials, and the influence of photography are discussed. Includes over 200 color illustrations.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Unusual Depth and Accessibility.......2004-08-30

This is an excellent overview of impressionist painting as well as a good introduction to painting methodology in a particular historical context. The author provides the reader with a basis for really understanding the aesthetic agenda of the impressionists by explaining the context in which it developed; traditional academic painting, material changes in the artist's media, the influence of photography, political undercurrents and broader social change, as well as the character of each individual painter.

But it's the illustrations that really make this book useful, engaging you both through ideas and concrete examples of their application. Great for the painter, fans of impressionism, or anyone wanting to understand the visual arts.

5 out of 5 stars Very detailed and inspiring.......2004-07-08

There seem to be so many books on the techniques of the old Masters, but it's very difficult to find books on actual painting techniques of the Impressionists. This book discusses this topic in extreme detail. Small sections of paintings are magnified with arrows pointing to specific areas, describing how they were probably done and with which paint colors.

As a context to the primary subject matter, you also get a fair amount of art history. This part I found interesting as well.

I read this book for hours at a time and was thoroughly fascinated and inspired. If you love the Impressionists and (especially) if you are a painter yourself, you will really appreciate this book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A popular standard in learning to draw heads from memory..........2006-09-17

...for beginners & intermediates in ability. It's 32 pages taken from several of his original books- easily my favorite Loomis collection!

In recent decades there have been 3 main teachers in learning to draw heads from memory. For cube-based construction we have George Bridgman. For ball/sphere-based construction we have Andrew Loomis. And for oval/ellipse-based construction, we have the famous teacher of the Dynamic Drawing series- comicbook artist Burne Hogarth. Many of today's Japanese animation & comicbook instructionals are using these very same principles, along with some of the teachings by the Famous Artists School. My current interest is in oval & cube-based construction, but it's Loomis' famous *ball/sphere-based* construction here that many people consider to be the BEST. All artists, from beginners to even professionals(!), could easily benefit in learning these 3 popular standards.
In any case, this is a great work *in pencil* on heads of all kinds. All popular aspects of construction are covered: men, women, children, teens, elderly, fashion-models, proportions, rythmic lines, planes, anatomy, bone structure, simple lines & shapes, perspective, common actions, expressions, clear line drawings, and even full-blown tonal studies (whew!). That's a lot in just 32 pages. It's all done in a classic mid-20th century style, similar to Jack Hamm's excellent Drawing The Head And Figure. My favorite pages here are p.26, p.27, and p.30, because these are his clearest & most detailed pure line drawings- exceedingly great to copy & learn from. A tremendous help for anyone interested in learning to draw from memory- get this great book today!

P.S. ...just so you know: this reviews page is shared by 2 Loomis books. The 1st is his slim & tall, 32-page Walter Foster paperback collection currently entitled Drawing: The Head (HT197). This HT197 guide was also known as Heads/2. My review is for this Walter Foster collection. The 2nd book this reviews page is linked to is Loomis' original hardcover called Drawing the Head and Hands; a full-blown book- more than 32 pages. At this writing, this 2nd book is out of print. The real reason these 2 books share these reviews is that the shorter, Walter Foster collection takes a few pages from several books, including pages from this full-blown Drawing the Head and Hands.
As I understand it, Loomis actually *created* ball/sphere-based construction for heads, printed in Fun With A Pencil circa 1939- and I see no evidence to contradict this. And today it's one of the most popular methods around. His books being out of print confuses many! That's why I give this 5 stars: instead of slamming Walter Foster's publications for their lack of completeness, we should thank them for keeping Loomis' name alive(!). If it weren't for this Drawing: The Head collection, I might never have given his Figure Drawing For All It's Worth a chance. Now I have both- thank goodness!

1 out of 5 stars walter foster publishing ruins what they touch.......2002-06-14

I held Andrew Loomis's books in the highest esteem. Then walter foster came along and decided to cut cost by publishing every third page and discarding everything in between. Think this statement is absurd! Compare Andrew Loomis's books BEFORE and AFTER walter foster got his hands on them.

4 out of 5 stars bringing the diffucult within reach.......2002-04-29

The human body is the hardest thing to sketch, and of its parts, the head and hands are most intimidating. Loomis found a way to bring these challenges into the realm of the achievable for amateurs, with a text that, while a bit old fashioned in style, feeds the drawing brain.
As a bonus, Loomis'own pieces, particularly the finished sketches, are deeply satiafying to view. To be sure, the style is genre-past, but the evocation is sweet, recent, and wholly American. One can see in the sketched heads the tender, yearbook faces of our parents now aged or departed.

5 out of 5 stars A very, very good book!!!.......2001-02-23

"Drawing Heads" by Andrew Loomis is a very thorough and comprehensive book that has amazingly been crammed into under 70 pages.

There is no waste whatsoever in any of the pages. The illustrations are beautiful and it contains simplified, easy to understand approaches to drawing the head as well as basic anatomy and facial planes. Also contained are the proportions for small children, babies and teens.

It would have to be the best book on drawing the head i have come across and is at a bargain price. It is a "must have" for anyone serious about learning how to draw the head.

5 out of 5 stars Best book in the world!!.......2000-09-13

I've owned this book for quite some time now,but the only thing is that it's a translated chinese version of it & the translatiton was done very badly.Still with the well drawn images,I was able to learn everything on drawing of the head & hands. It's a great book & everyone should at least flip over the book to see how faces should be drawn well.Sorry for those who wants this book,I'll never sell it away(May be after I've got the english version of it).

4 out of 5 stars Valuable resource on dyes and fabric paints.......2000-06-03

The name turned me away at first, as I am not dyeing for the theater. That was a mistake. While I don't need the chapters on how to set up a dye shop for a theatre, other information provided in this book is hard to come by elsewhere. Covers fiber reactive dyes, acid dyes, 1:2 metal complex dyes, direct dyes, basic dyes for acrylics, disperse dyes, metallics, textile paints, screen printing, 4 different discharge dyeing pastes, batik, blue printing and brown printing on fabric (or whole garments) using light, marbling, airbrush. Much more thorough treatment of potential hazards than any other dyeing book I've seen. Lists of carcinogenic dyes to avoid. Actual test results of fabric feel and fastness of many different textile paints, each on six different fibers. Good index.

Book Description

A breathtaking showcase of Maxine Gadd’s whimsical, colorful fairy paintings. Her highly detailed work has appeared before in anthologies, but this is the first book dedicated to Gadd alone—and it’s exquisitely produced, bound in rich red cloth and with matte art paper, padded front board, and gilt edges on the pages. What a treat for fans of fantasy art, who have already turned other titles on fairies into bestsellers: very few painters have managed to capture this unseen world so completely. Looking at the pictures—sometimes shimmering, sometimes eerie—you can practically hear boughs creak, leaves rustle, small wings flurry, and voices chatter in a tongue unknown to mortals. Commentary by the ever-popular John Grant, aimed at “believers,” enhances the images.

5 out of 5 stars A Fairy Fantastically Book!!!.......2007-09-12

If you love beautiful depictions of Fairys and Mermaids and other magical creatures you have to have this book! It is not that expensive and 85 % of the pages are absolutely stunning! This book is composed almost entirely of paintings and sketches, so if you are looking for a story you will be disappointed. However, whenever I look for Fairy books I search for ones that are artistically done. So if you are very particular about how Fairys are presented, like I am, you HAVE to get this book now!

5 out of 5 stars Well worth whatever it costs.......2007-08-14

This book is filled with mesmerizing, ethereal beings whose color and expressions are stunningly lifelife, yet remaining most decidedely surreal. Her understanding of anatomy, facial expressions, and even the placement of such things as freckles are superb. The detail is incredibly rich, the colors more so. Her methods, including mixing different media, painting, oils, and colored pencils present fairies, mermaids, etc. in a unique and breathtaking light. Truly superb and inspiring. A must have for anyone who likes art, fairies, or books. A highly recommended buy.

4 out of 5 stars 5 STARS!!! - Very beautiful. Stunning Art!.......2007-08-12

This book has beautiful art in it. It would be a very nice piece in your Faery book collection.

Better still, it would make a great gift for a Faery lover. Its presentation is the best in Faery art books. It comes in a hard matching box, and when you open it you find the most exquisite velvet cover, best I've ever seen on a book. This is followed by page after page of stunning art.

Well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely faerie paintings!.......2007-06-08

I'm a big faery fan so I was delighted to find this pretty book of faery portraits--all are pretty and some are quite impressive artistically. An attractive book and a nice gift for someone who is a fairy collector, especialy if they like the more pretty, girly kind of faeries!

3 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected.......2007-01-23

I do love many of Maxine Gadd's paintings, however the majority of my favorites are not included in this book. The image, "Frost" is included but what a poor reproduction it is in here. You'd be better off ordering a print or the greeting card if you want to revel in this image. I own the greeting card, and it is BEAUTIFUL. They way she paints that platinum hair is breathtaking. I was so disappointed to find my favorite image so poorly reproduced in her book. The image "Frost" appears faded and doesn't justify its beauty at all. Also, "Emeron, Branwyn, Haegeth, Gingerbread House, Toadstool House" to name a few loved works are left out.

I found most of the images to be her more "weird" works. I regret to use this word, however for my taste and for others who adore my book list, I believe you will find this to be true.

Look on Fatara World dot com and order your favorites instead. I hope one day she publishes another book with more of my favorites.
