Book Description
The Nuts and Bolts of Organic Chemistry will help readers change their learning habits so they can master the Organic Chemistry course. This text is designed for readers to use early in the course before they dive too far into a traditional textbook. It prepares readers to think about and use the fundamental concepts; it develops in readers the right mindset for learning organic chemistry. This brief book shows readers that understanding fundamental concepts is absolutely essential for success, and helps them develop a good feel for how to apply those concepts to many different situations. The text helps convince readers that brute memorization is not the right way to approach the course; instead, they should master fundamental concepts and important reaction mechanisms. By following the same philosophy as those who write the MCAT exams, Karty focuses on improving readers’ thinking ability and powers of logical deduction.
KEY TOPICS: Why do most students struggle in Organic Chemistry?, Lewis dot structures and the chemical bond, Molecular geometry and dipole moments, Isomerism, Charge Stability — Charge is bad!, Reaction Mechanisms — electron rich to electron poor, Intermolecular forces, Sn1/Sn2/E1/E2 Reactions: The whole story.
For all readers interested in understanding the fundamentals of organic chemistry.
Customer Reviews:
Very disappointed.......2007-09-06
This book has obviously been of tremendous help to many readers, but I found myself becoming more confused about Organic Chemistry than when I started reading. I felt overwhelmed by a great deal of information that didn't seem to tie back to the Org class I'm currently taking. Perhaps my learning style is just different from others who posted. Or maybe this is a book that should be read over the summer ahead of the school year, when there's plenty of time to reread sections that the student doesn't understand on the first pass.
With a full-blown headache, I'm packing this book up and returning it.
The only reason that I didn't go with one star is that Dr. Karty writes well, which is always appreciated.
Prepare or Review.......2007-08-19
Great for any chemistry student to review gen chem and prepare for Organic. Covers an understanding of operating mechanisms in place of memorizing loads of information. A key to chemistry success.
Well written, thorough, and perfect for students.......2007-06-30
I've read many chemistry texts that were poorly written or lacked foresight when trying to address students' probable questions. This text, surprisingly, did a good job of addressing all my questions as I had them. The author clearly knows his field and at the same time understand where students make mistakes -- and provides answers at the appropriate places.
In addition, this text is actually written in a way that is readable. The author presents clear and useful examples. The problems at the end of each chapter provide a good place to try out the concepts introduced in preceding sections. I highly recommend this text for anyone looking to understand organic chemistry instead of just memorizing it.
Insightful and understandable. A good book to lay an incredibly firm foundation........2007-05-31
This book is wounderful. Joel Karty writes this book with an air of friendliness and assurance to the reader that he or she can indeed succeed in the feared course of Organic Chemistry. Karty does not try to intimidate the reader with intense scientific lingo, but rather puts things in more general terms in order to let a firm foundation be set such that those general terms can one day be easily translated into those scientific words. He also provides great analogies for concepts that will forever stick with the reader.
Most in this book can stand alone. However, the chapter on isomerism can be difficult without a molecular modeling set. It is recommended that the reader obtain one.
It should be noted that this book is designed to be read BEFORE your year-long course has begun.
A must have!!
A WAY to LEARN (not memorize) Organic Chemistry.......2007-04-19
I am a College Professor in Biology and I simply cannot tell you how many of my students consider Organic Chemistry to be the make-or-break course heading toward their degree. With stacks of note cards each with an organic chemical reaction neatly upon it so go most students in their quest to 'study' organic chemistry-and that means one thing, memorize. Guess what? They hate the course, and more often than not do miserably. I simply can't tell you how many students change their entire life plans all because of this course. There is a better way.
Organic and for that matter most science classes are puzzles, if you think about them that way. What Karty does in this book is give students the tools to approach organic from that perspective. I was fotunate as an undergraduate to 'discover' a similar paradigm to study organic chemistry which I then used it as a way to appoach almost all my science courses (ok, I did have to do some memorizing). I have to say it really helped make me a true scientists. Learning how to approach and think about a reaction is the key to mastering this topic which is EXACTLY what he passes along.
I would highly recommend this book to those students who are actually trying to become scientists (not just exam-crammers) and those who are looking for a better way to learn organic. There simply is no other book that I have seen that does it as well as "The Nuts and Bolts of Organic Chemistry". I tip my hat to Dr. Karty for developing and offering such a valuable resource.

What's to eat? The Milk-Free, Egg-Free, Nut-Free Food Allergy Cookbook.......2007-09-11
My grand daughter is allergic to all dairy products and tree nuts. I did not know what to fix her for meals or desserts. This book really tells me all kinds of food available for anyone who are allergic to above mentioned. It is not difficult to prepare all recipes on this book . I am glad I found this cook book. Thanks to the author.
Very good cookbook for those with food allergies.......2007-05-15
This book has a ton of recipes. I've only tried a few, but they were each very good. My 2 year old son is allergic to eggs, milk and peanuts so this seemed like the perfect cookbook for us. The only problem is that he's at a very picky age right now, so most of these recipes he won't have anything to do with at this time. Some desserts and cookies are all I've made so far that he'll eat. I think as the years go by we'll get a lot more use out of this book.
Wonderful Book!.......2007-05-13
This cookbook is absolutely fantastic! It's so nice to have a cookbook that suits my daughter's dietary restrictions exactly, without having to substitute this or that. So far, I've tried only a handful of recipes, mostly cakes and cookies, but all were easy to make and delicious! Highly recommended!
Helpful for an Allergic Family.......2007-05-10
This cookbook has been helpful when looking for ideas to serve my family and guests.
BEST ALLERGY COOKBOOK!.......2007-04-12
This cookbook has made such a difference in my life! I am an allergy mom that was in desperate need to feed my son who has severe egg and peanut allergies. It is so nice to have such a variety of foods, dinner, breakfast, snack, desserts, etc that my sons can enjoy that are completely safe. And totally yummy! This Cookbook is the best out there!

How to Buy and Sell Apartment Buildings
ASIN: 0974876593 |
Book Description
Investing in apartment properties is made simple in this comprehensive resource for prospective buyers on how to make smart decisions about real estate and reach financial independence. Instructions, sample cases, worksheets, and real-life examples illustrate how to find and buy good property. An introduction to the real estate market for novices complements sophisticated discussions of finding value-added properties, determining market rent, obtaining a mortgage, refinancing, and selling. The expert advice presented offers an analytical approach to assuring predictable and successful investment in an often uncertain market.
Customer Reviews:
Probably The Best Book On This Subject.......2007-03-10
I have read and own numerous books on real estate investment and found this one to be one of the most concise and detailed books on apartment house investing on the market. I really don't understand what a previous reviewer meant by that it was a total loss. I found it to be detailed and informative. It literally takes you by the hand leads into investing on a property. I will be following the author's advice and begin investing in small apartment properties. If you are seeking true financial independence, you would be wise to purchase this book and not the crap promoted on late night t.v.
Worth The Investment.......2006-05-07
This is one of four books on purchasing and managing real estate that we purchased. Although pricey due to availability in hardback only, for those such as us that are first time buyers of commercial real estate, the data, clarity of thought and information will likely prove very valuable. It is a quick read that provides the basic tenets of buying multi-family units. The financial elements are fairly simplistic; hence we purchased an additional book that delves into the intricacies of purchasing and financing multi-family units.
Best I've Found Thus Far.......2006-02-25
Of the three books I've read on investing in multi-family real estate, this is by far the best. The author does a good job of walking the reader through from start to finish the purchase of a representative property. In the appendix the author provides several very easy to understand and useful financial analysis templates which can easily be recreated in Excel or any other spreadsheet program.
The Real Estate Recipe: Make Millions by Buying Small Apartment Properties in Your Spare Time.......2006-02-06
I found the book to be a very concise (Nuts & Bolts) and logical approach to buying small apartment properties from someone who obviously knows the process. He gives you all the tools needed to anaylise, purchase, manage and project profits. The forms in the book are easily accessed at the publisher's website www.dnapress.com for downloading. I'm closing on a 7 unit property in less than 2 weeks. Thanks Brian!

Book Description
This lively, practical book offers a complete guide to doing cognitive therapy with children and adolescents. Within a clear-cut theoretical framework, the authors describe how to adapt cognitive therapy principles and procedures to the unique needs of children with a variety of presenting problems. The book starts with the fundamentals, demonstrating a systematic yet flexible approach to case conceptualization and treatment planning. Detailed guidelines are then presented to help the clinician introduce cognitive therapy to children and families; identify problems, feelings, and thoughts; craft Socratic dialogues; design homework assignments; and implement a range of traditional and creative interventions. Concluding chapters focus explicitly on techniques for managing depression, anxiety, and disruptive behavior in youth. Devoting special attention to cultural diversity issues, the book is filled with illustrative case examples and session vignettes. Included are many useful reproducible worksheets and forms.
Customer Reviews:
very useful book; exactly what i needed.......2007-03-14
Really good book. Esseential resource for all clinicians
Excellent Learning Tool.......2007-03-04
I'm still working my way through the book; but what I like is that its an easy read and you can incorporate it in to practice as you are going along. Its an excellent way to learn specific ways to use Cognitive Therapy with both children and adolescents. They do a good job of disinguishing between the two, which is important when you work with the two age groups. If you like specific techniques, and easy to follow explanations this is a worth while book.
Well done!.......2005-08-19
This book came in a timely manner and is in the condition I expected. No complaints.
Followthrough of Promises.......2005-07-20
This book is ideal for anyone with some knowledge about psychology. It provides some general information regarding cognitive-behavioral theory, but it does so in almost a "need to know" format; as the book goes through the outline of how to conduct a session according to the cognitive-behavioral formati, it explains the rational behind the design in a clear and intelligent way. A great supplement to a Master's level education.
Review.......2005-07-19
This is an excellent description of CBT and its application to work with children. A nice combination of concrete strategies and more theoretical discussion of CBT. Great for both trainees and more seasoned clinicians.

Book Description
A classic in the field of sustainable gardening, HOW TO GROW MORE VEGETABLES shows how to produce a beautiful organic garden with minimal watering and care, whether it's just a few tomatoes in a tiny backyard or enough food to feed a family of four on less than half an acre. Updated with the latest biointensive tips and techniques, this is an essential reference for gardeners of all skill levels seeking to grow some or all of their own food.
Customer Reviews:
A good book with surplus pages.......2007-08-16
This is a definitive guide to the Bio- Intensive method of growing vegetables. It is well written, and you can see that a lot of time and effort are behind the concepts presented here.
Two things bother me; There`s an almost 100- page bibliography included in the book!? Couldn`t it have been put up on a website or something, instead of just making the book (look) bigger and thicker? The second issue is that I find it always a bit irritating when a lot of equipment or systems get mentioned in a book, but to get their specifics or plans you must buy another book. Maybe the plans for the U- bar or for the mini- greenhouse could have fitted on those bibliography pages?
Anyways, the four stars is for the part where the actual system gets described.
It's not easy, but it's brilliant and could save the world.......2007-05-22
I am impressed at how many people misunderstand the purpose of this book. It's not just a gardening book. It lays out a comprehensive guide to growing the most food you can on the least amount of land in the most sustainable way -- meaning the way that is, on an ongoing basis into perpetuity, most healthy both for your family, your land, and the wider world. All those things are connected, and maintaining the connection is part of what the book and authors are all about.
The title means what it says, and they tell you exactly how to do it, basing their recommendations on the work of the organization that publishes the book, Ecology Action. They have been growing experimental gardens and conducting detailed research over the past 35 years. In succeeding editions of "How to Grow More Vegetables" they summarize their continuing research for those interested in personally benefiting from their methods and discoveries.
Some may object to the excruciatingly detailed charts and plans. Some of us find them a godsend. Regardless of what we think of them, they are the outgrowth of years of research and are intended to help, not just backyard gardeners in the US, but people in Kenya, India, Russia, Mexico, and other places around the world, whose lives and livelihoods, not to mention the health of their environment, may depend on maximizing their yields while minimizing their purchased inputs and water usage.
The central fact underlying this method is this: the only way to achieve the highest sustainable yields is to build and feed your soil, and the only way to build your soil without taking away fertility from someone else's soil (through purchased inputs such as compost, fertilizer, etc.) is to make and use your own compost. This book explains why, and shows you how. It works.
Though we are still shielded from it in the US, the world is facing a potentially devastating loss of agricultural fertility due to a combination of squandered topsoil (lost through both development and abuse by chemicals and poor tillage practices), water shortages, and soaring prices and reduced availability of fossil fuels (which power the farm equipment, get it to market, and form the basis of most chemical fertilizers). Years ago, Ecology Action set out to discover in a rational and scientific way, just how much land and labor it would take to grow the amount of food, properly balanced for calories and nutrition, required by one person for one year. Could a family of four truly feed itself from a 1200 square foot garden if it had to, or wanted to? How much work and water would it take? How much fertilizer would they have to buy? Could they grow their own fertilizer? What tools would they need? What about fiber for clothing? Building materials? Animal feed?
The "How to Grow More Vegetables" books answer those questions, and much, much more. As the years go by, (and with each succeeding food contamination scandal) more of us, even in the US, are realizing just how important those questions are. You may not need or want all the information in this book. But it is all there, and nowhere else that I am aware of, for those who do want it.
This book could save the world, if only the world would pay attention. But it will also show you how to grow fabulous, tasty vegetables with less water, less work, less weeding, less money.
Are you into numbers?.......2007-05-12
I like John Jeavons and his book is very useful. However, I'm not into calculating and figuring every square inch in the garden with tables/charts. I enjoy growing for the freedom of spirit it provides. This book although very useful, feels very constrictive. Not to mention EVERY page has at least 5 mentions of "Grow Biointensive". I felt like a was reading a long drawn out advertisement. Enough John, say it in the intro and then leave us alone to enjoy the book. If we weren't interested in your method we wouldn't be reading your book.
This is a great book.......2007-05-04
I had an earlier edition of this book that I used as an introduction to high intensity gardening. I love the book because gives technical information on such things as soil pH, soil preparation, plant spacing, and crop yields. It probably is not a book for people that do not enjoy the technical aspects of gardening; those wanting only a quick fix approach. I have ordered the 7th edition.
You don't have to be a fanatic to love this book.......2007-04-07
I just bought this 2006 update of Jeavons's book and have had enough time to study it. I have used an earlier edition for the past ten years. I have other books on gardening, a lot of them, but this one is an invaluable resource, soon dog-eared, softened around the edges and muddied in real use. It stays in the potting shed, not on a bookshelf in the house. It is loaded with reference information, charts, plans and illustrations in addition to its extensive written information and instruction. Use just a tenth of it and you will improve your garden and its output.
My wife and I don't have a lot of space, yet we have found the information in the book invaluable for maximizing the space we do have. We're just into our new house now, and there hasn't been time to start gardening here, but at our previous residence we followed Jeavons's guidelines in gardening two beds of 20 by 3-1/2 feet each and harvesting year-round a fabulous quantity and variety of produce from it, every bit as disease free, healthy and flavorful as he claims. We are going to do the same thing here at the new place, as soon as possible, but this time we are going to follow his suggestions for planting fruit trees and berry vines in the garden, too. Some of those are already in.
The negative comments in some previous reviews puzzle me, because their writers seem to dismiss the book without first having put any of its information to actual use. Note that I neither know nor have any connection to the author, or anyone connected to him, so I have no reason to support his book except its value in my experience. Read my other reviews and you will see that I do not hesitate to criticize a book, or even to condemn it, where it is appropriate.
That said, I highly recommend owning and studying this book to anyone interested in gardening and eating well. You don't have to follow it slavishly. We don't, but it has repaid our efforts many times over with the visual pleasure of a dazzling, bounteous little garden that is almost as lush and decorative as a well-designed, complex floral border or a beautiful quilt, one that surprises and charms visitors and neighbors while consistently loading our table with the most delicious, nutritious vegetables anyone could desire--with extra produce to trade or give away. Read it with an open mind; it will profit you well.

Interesting Points .......2007-04-17
This book is interesting but I also just finished reading "Kiss Theory Good Bye" by Bob Prosen on leadership and management just published and it is also a very actionable and timely book.
The thing I did like about 'nuts-n-bolts' is the Top Ten lists in each chapter, in particular "the top ten communication tools" were very good.

Book Description
Arigorous analysis of dramatic studies on therapeutic power of nutrition has led Dr. Oscar H. Franco and a team of acclaimed researchers to determine that substituting certain foods in place of the leading medical "cocktail" for preventing cardiovascular disease yields identical benefits. As reported in the British Medical Journal, they concluded that daily consumption of seven specific foods could result, on average, in an increase in total life expectancy of 6.6 years for men and 4.8 years for women.
Dr. Ralph Felder, a physician and a master-trained chef, has now taken these groundbreaking studies out of the laboratory and put them into the kitchen. Using his inspired yet easy-toprepare recipes and creative menu plans, along with a few simple lifestyle guidelines, anyone can add healthy years to his or her life, enjoy-with few restrictions-a wide range of delicious and satisfying foods, and lose weight safely and easily, while indulging in goodies like chocolate and nuts.

bonus years diet.......2007-06-23
My daughter bought this book for me after reading about it in Oprah magazine. Dosing food like doctors dose pills. A great idea. Dr. Felder gives us menus for an entire month and that makes it so easy to follow this diet. The recipes are great. He is a chef and knows his stuff! My husband loves chocolate so his new favorite dessert is the chocolate risotto pudding. I love the stuffed french toast. I just saw Dr. Felder on tv and as he says "this is a diet we cal live with."
The Bonus Years.......2007-06-20
I own many cookbooks but this is absolutely one of my favorites. I love the healthy aspects of this book. I appreciate all of the research put into it---delicious dishes based on science, but wow do I thoroughly enjoy the recipes. Dr. Felder's Chefs hat shines through here. I love the pan-grilled salmon with frisee salad lyonnaise--excellent!! The black bean chili is delicious and the crab salad with creamy dressing is the best. Another favorite is the salmon with shanghi red sauce. What a grerat combination, a MD and Chef. No wonder this book is so good.
The Bonus Years Diet.......2007-06-08
An incredibly useful and informative book. At last something about lifestyle which makes sense and is fun at the same time. I congratulate the author for making such complex stuff so understandable.
Right on with good nutrition except for fruits and veggies.......2007-04-20
Overall this book is a wonderful picture of how one should eat. My family and I are pretty healthy eaters already but I just had my third baby and trying to loose the last few pounds. So after I saw this book in the O magazine I picked it up and loved it. I can't put it down. The recipes are so yummy. My husband loves garlic so this fits in perfectly with our lifestyle. The only thing that I would comment on is, for being a pretty new book, it sure is not up to date on the correct serving for fruits and vegetables. Back in 2004 they uped the recommended servings from 5-10 to 7-13. Big difference. I mean if you aren't eating your fruits and veggies already then going from none to 5 is a great start. But for those of us who already are eating the recommended servings this was kind of sad that that's all that the book recommended. But I still love the book and would recommend it to anyone just ad that major key factor.

Book Description
Let's say you're a typical low-paid working stiff. You've sailed small boats all your life, you've saved a little money--you're finally ready for a real cruising boat. You drop in on Tadd, your friendly neighborhood yacht broker, who is more than happy to sell you that brand-new Trickledown 32 for only $90,000, plus a few optional extras like anchors, sails, cushions, a compass, instruments--stuff like that; say, $115,000 ready to sail.
"One hundred and fifteen thousand . . . dollars?"
"Not to worry," says Tadd. "Only 20% down and 10 years of easy payments and you're off into the sunset. Let's see, that's $23,000 down and, at 10% interest, only $1,215.79 per month--plus insurance of course. Send me a postcard from Tahiti."
"How much per month? That's half my salary! Don't you have anything in my price range?"
Tadd glances conspicuously at his Rolex, sighing, and points to a characterless Clorox jog with a spindly mast--a hyperthyroid daysailer with bunks for the seven dwarfs; NOT what you had in mind!
And then you see it, in the back of the yard, varnish hanging in strips off weather-beaten trim, rigging frayed, sails ripped and stained, dank interior with dangling wires and scurrying anonymous inhabitants. But underneath all the squalor you see the lines of a real cruising boat--a sturdy hull with a sprightly sheer from the pen of a Philip Rhodes or a Tom Gillmer--a fiberglass boat built back when craftsmanship still meant something.
You remember when you bought your house--it looked a lot like this boat, and you and your all-thumbs husband managed to breathe life into it over time, painting, papering, spackling--lots of spackling. This boat has possibilities.
"How much?" you ask.
"You're kidding, right?" says Tadd, flicking a bit of cobweb from his spotless Breton Reds. "Take it for, say, $8,000?"
Sold.
Well, now you've got it home, but Bob and Norm aren't there every weekend to help guide you through this restoration. Where to turn?
Turn to This Old Boat. Don Casey, co-author of Sensible Cruising: The Thoreau Approach, assumes you know nothing--not even how to use tools--and leads you methodically and good-naturedly through every step of turning a cast-off fiberglass boat into a real show-stopper, including the simplest and most comlete explanation yet of sailmaking--the sailor's darkest and most expensive art. Casey's step-by-step drawings guide you through a simple project--laying up a fiberglass instrument case, for example--then show you how to apply those skills to something more ambitious--like building a new hatch.
With this book and the best buyer's market in boating history, you can send Tadd that postcard from Tahiti--and have money to spare.
Can't afford that brand-new boat?
Take advantage of the best buyer's market in boating history. Turn a rundown production boat into a first-class yacht with This Old Boat.
Whether you are skilled or unskilled, whether you like sail or powerboats, here is everything you need to:
- Find the right boat at the right price
- Map out a logical, affordable renovation plan
- Work with fiberglass--everything from minor cosmetics to major structural repairs
- Renovate rigging, winches, engines, and other mechanical systems
- Work with wood, canvas, and plastic
- Change the interior from a cramped, dingy dormitory to a light, spacious livable home
- Repair and modernize the electrical, plumbing, and refrigeration systems
- Add a stunning, mirror-like finish
- Make your own dodgers, sail covers, and SAILS--and much more!
"Casey's intelligent, practical advice covers just about everything, and his style is just what the doctor ordered for anyone daft enough to want to fix up an old boat."--Southern Boating
"A great book for anyone on the water."--Maine Coastal News

This Old Boat.......2006-07-22
Covers everything from dings to diesels. A must read for apprentice boatsmiths. This reading gives you the confidence and knowledge to fix up & repair most every defect in your used boat.
Before you buy that old boat - READ THIS BOOK!.......2006-04-02
This book is entertaining to read and really is an eye opener as to what you're getting yourself into re wooden boats. Really is a prmer on the topic or Wooden Boats 101 - when you are done reading it you'll know your up to the task or not.
Absolutely a MUST for your boat -- you need this book........2005-07-14
You're familiar of course with the numerous lists of necessary books to have aboard your boat. Boat Owner's comes to mind by Nigel Calder as one. HOWEVER, I believe you will find more useful information within the 408 pages. Also, it's book size (won't be a pain to store aboard) will be welcome.
The boring stuff (he tells you how to prioritize) -- some may need to hear/see safety first, and structure/bilge pumps et al. I could understand the reasoning but it wasn't real useful to me. His organizational check-lists will help folks actually plan chronology and FINISH the jobs.
The best part though was the step by step, well-illustrated how-to's. Everything I could want/need to know was covered, including how to read my electric meter, how much insulation the refrigerator needs, how much heat loss to expect in various sized boxes, how to plan for power needs, and a logic as to what we really need/can use/and WILL WORK aboard.
It's not a be-all/end-all book but it's very very good and well worth space aboard. You'll still need your shop books (for your engine, head, pumps, etc.) but with this gem you'll understand the why as well as the how to do repairs.
Even canvas repair is covered. Don't tell anyone, but it's not genius material. You can do it yourself and save big bucks. Mostly though, it's a book of instructions for repairs/improvements and "gosh, that'd be nice" type of things. If you don't know already, you'll learn step-by-step how to Fiberglas, how to make sails, how to fix wiring, WHEN TO HIRE EXPERTS, and more.
Even at retail price $35, it's well worth it, though of course I'd suggest saving $$ and buying used.
Not complete.......2001-05-26
I found that the book lacked certain basic information. for example: when restoring an old boat, one must typically contend with transporting the boat (perhaps mention of trailer, and cradle designs), or de-masting and storage, removing the multi-layers of antifoulant paint, correct the grazing of the gelcoat. For the interiour, one may decide to substitute teak for mahogany, white oak, etc, but there is no mention of altenate woods for cabinetry and interior work. For the deck anti-skid, how can you mold parts of the missing anti-skid, if you dont want to use threadmaster M. I just found the book a little bit less than basic.
I wish there were 10 stars! It should be on everyones shelf........2001-02-05
I don't know where to begin thanking Casey and recommending him at the same time. A feeble attempt follows:
This is the MOST valuable of my 80 or 90 boatbuilding books, hands-down. It doesn't matter what construction material you are using, or what your level of expertise. At the very least, it is a fun, witty, and motivating book. Even if you come out of it with no more knowledge than when you started (I guarantee that will not happen), it will give you the necessary wisdom and motivation to stay the course. It was the first 'boat building' book I ever purchased, and it alone motivated me to stop dreaming about a boat, and to start building/rebuilding one. And it was to this book I turned whenever a project was frustrating (this is almost daily, for the uninitiated--and he explains this, too). It was also the book I used as a primary reference, and it served me very well in the rebuilding of two medium-sized boats. It has since served me equally well in the building of boats from plans, though you will need more than he offers for this (that does not mean instead of this, but in addition to his book, another will be necessary).
Whether you are going to build a boat from scratch, or you are going to refurbish an older boat (he makes a hard sell), this book MUST be read. If you have only one book on your shelf pertaining to the construction/reconstruction/maintenance, this should be it. You will never forget it, and you will recommend it to others as strongly as I am to you. Your boat will feel naked without it.

Book Description
Twenty-five years ago, Herb Kelleher reinvented air travel when he founded Southwest Airlines, where the planes are painted like killer whales, a typical company maxim is "Hire people with a sense of humor," and in-flight meals are never served--just sixty million bags of peanuts a year. By sidestepping "reengineering," "total quality management," and other management philosophies and employing its own brand of business success, Kelleher's airline has turned a profit for twenty-four consecutive years and seen its stock soar 300 percent since 1990.
Today, Southwest is the safest airline in the world and ranks number one in the industry for service, on-time performance, and lowest employee turnover rate; and Fortune magazine has twice ranked Southwest one of the ten best companies to work for in America. How do they do it?
With unlimited access to the people and inside documents of Southwest Airlines, authors Kevin and Jackie Freiberg share the secrets behind the greatest success story in commercial aviation. Read it and discover how to transfer the Southwest inspiration to your own business and personal life.
Customer Reviews:
Such a great story, everyone should read it. Especially anyone interested in business........2007-09-21
Yeah, this is a business book, but it is a lot more of value and is a lot more fun than most of them. Get it, read it, think about it, and enjoy it. The title has multiple meanings. It refers to Southwest's policy of giving its short haul passengers a bag of peanuts instead of meals (they give out tens of millions of bags each year). Those bags of nuts also stand for Southwest's healthy obsession with keeping their costs down so they can keep their fares low. And "Nuts!" also refers to the founders of the company starting a low cost airline in Texas in the age of regulated airlines (do you remember that time) and their radical approach to carrying passengers. Basically, outside of safety and maintenance, whatever the big airlines did, Southwest did it just about the opposite way.
Where the big airlines used the hub and spoke to fly more full flights, Southwest chose point-to-point and a 10-15 minutes turn around time to keep the planes in the air. Where the big airlines encouraged uniforms and professionalism, Southwest went with hotpants and outrageous behavior (now they use khaki shorts, but the personality of the flight attendants is more like a stand up routine). Instead of meals, peanuts. Instead of assigned seats, you pick it on board. Instead of the multi-part printed ticket, you get a paper receipt with the words "THIS IS A TICKET" printed on it. There is a LOT more just like this.
Learning from Herb Kelleher's approach to business and his actually being able to make money in the airline business is fascinating stuff. A great read because Kevin & Jackie Freiberg not only write well, they know how to organize the material to make it especially valuable to us. Just terrific. Strongly recommended to everyone because it is such an interesting story.

NUTS!.......2007-07-30
This book is a must read for anyone in the business world. Herb's theories and ideas should be mirrored by anyone in or out of the airline industry.
Employees come first.......2007-07-08
This book has now been in print for 11 years but is still a valuable read. As most people spend more waking hours at work and the field to find highly qualified people becomes more competitive, a successful company will create an environment that is flat, allows the employees to grow, challenge and enjoy coming to work.
I did find the book a little long and verbose on praises. If you do find the beginning a little long and are lacking the time, do not miss out on the last 3 chapters. Although commonsense it lays out how it is within SWA
Leaders leading Leaders

2. Focus on things you can control
3. Be prepared
4. Sharpen your political skills
5. Love people into action
6. Listen for more than you hear
Leadership from the inside out

Go Nuts
1. Find a purpose you're crazy about
2. Make your life and work an adventure
3. Believe in people and they will believe in themselves
4. Don't take yourself too seriously
5. Dare to Dream
6. Be Yourself
7. Dare to be different
8. Pursue love before techniques
9. Choose service over self-interest
It will be interesting to see how the story plays out from 2007 with even greater pressure on oil prices, and with potential changes relating to Herbert D. Kelleher as Chairman of the Board at the age of 75; and, also Colleen C. Barrett as President, Secretary, Director at the age of 62.
In the end, you have to give credit to the company that keeps the employees as priority #1 and still manages to take its stock from about US$9 in 1998 to about US$ 15 in 2007. It seems the shareholders are not overly concerned. And as the book notes itself, there is no lone ranger at SWA. Leadership is fostered within the organization.
"Nuts" but then it expains the real success. Worth reading.......2007-02-04
You probably don't have to be a Southwest fan to enjoy this book but it helps. It just adds insight and confirms what you already now. Try to change a reservation or cancel one and you quickly find out this company is different. Chapters 19, Customers Come Second, and Chapter 20 Employees come first may as much as anything go to the heart of their message.
Backing their employees, empowering them, and a real loyalty to them is demonstrated in example after example. The lessons the pilots learned working as ramp agents would apply to any industry and even though what they did isn't unique it fits so well into the overall story that it is exciting to revisit the method of bringing a team together.
The book reminds me of Jim Collins book, "Good to Great" and "Built to Last". Those books seem to show ways to change a company and to make them into great ones. "Nuts" is about a company that has been great right from the beginning. Rather than concentrating on fixing things is shows how the company created itself.
This book was given to me. I hadn't read a business book in a while. I wasn't looking for a rally to success and was a little hesitant. People who believe in what they are doing and want to do the right things for the right reasons have a good message and this is worth reading just for the example it presents and it's message.
The official story behind a great airline.......2006-12-20
Southwest is the darling of the airline industry. This is the story of how three people formed an airline from an idea on a cocktail napkin. This covers the legal aspects of flying as well as the success of southwest by empowering their employees. It has the great Herb Keller stories along the way. If you are interested in studying the airline industry this is a must read to gain a perspective of one of the most profitable and successful airlines that has truly carved a niche for itself.

Great resource!.......2007-02-08
This is a great resource to have for travelling. I love the tabbed setup that makes it easy to get to the section I need. Obviously a lot of thought was put in to making the book (with an amazing amount of info.) as easy to use as possible.
It is obvious that a great deal of thought and experimentation has been put forth in the making of this valuable resource!
After being gf (and other things free) for 5 years, I appreciate the resource as it will make it far more possible for me to visit Italy (and other countries in my future) maintaining my health as much as possible along the way! Well done!
I have dining cards and they work quite well, but the next time I travel, I will be packing this book to take as well, without a doubt!

A Wonderful Resource For Dining Out Gluten Free.......2007-01-25
Eating when you're away from your own home is always a challenge when you are on a special diet.
In "Let's Eat Out!" Koeller and La France have put together an impressive amount of information to make life easier for travelers and people who just want to eat out with family and friends.
I found the book a bit difficult at first because there is just so much content to sort out. It's definitely not a book to digest in one sitting!
I soon realized it really is a combination of broad reference guide and quick reference "cheat sheets." Once that became clear, it was much easier to scan and use the table of contents and index to find specific information. You can choose to just use the quick guides or go to the more detailed explanations.
All in all, the authors cover a very broad topic in an orderly fashion that makes it easy to locate information for a variety of situations. They use 7 common cuisine types, from American Steak and Seafood to Thai, to analyze the issues a diner can expect to face. They offer comments on the ingredients, the way food is prepared and on likely sources of hidden cross contamination.
After you read a couple of these, you begin to see the patterns and it would not be so difficult to apply the same process to another type of food. As they point out, it's all about educating yourself and learning what questions to ask.
Poring through their food/menu analysis, I discovered to my dismay that the item I had been selecting from a fast food restaurant most likely contains hidden gluten that I would not have thought to question. I did wonder why I didn't feel good every time I ate there!
Not only does the book cover information about individual foods, styles of cuisine, and 10 common food allergens, it also provides specific information about travel including contact information for individual airlines and the special diets they provide, contact information for associations and organizations in many parts of the world and even some translation phrases.
I'd recommend "Let's Eat Out!" as a valuable reference book. It's especially useful for those who frequently eat out or travel and even better, those who'd like to eat out more but have hesitated to take the risk. It could open up a whole new world.
The authors deserve the recognition that their book received as a Benjamin Franklin award finalist for 2006 in the Health (Wellness/Nutrition) category.
For gluten intolerance and food sensitivities.......2007-01-20
"Let's Eat Out!" covers a very difficult topic, restaurant dining for people with food allergies and intolerances. For adults who should avoid top allergens due to mild to moderate food allergies and intolerances, this can be a very useful book. I have already referenced it a few times for some restaurant inspiration, outside of my usual Asian selections.
The book itself is stylishly laid out with color-coded chapters, strategically placed photographs, useful charts, and sample menus. It addresses ten of the most common food allergens: dairy, eggs, wheat, gluten (an intolerance), soy, peanuts, tree nuts, corn, fish, and shellfish.
It should be noted, that this book was written with celiac disease, multiple food "sensitivities", and gluten intolerance in mind. It may not be very appropriate for those who have life-threatening food allergies or severe intolerances. This is not to blame the authors. The various styles of food preparation combined with a high risk of cross-contamination in food service kitchens, make this a complicated area to address. Though, as one food allergy mom pointed out to me, the "Allergy-Free" title is a bit deceiving in this respect.
Also, for those who do have true food allergies, this book should not be used as a dining bible, but more as a suggestion based resource for further research and diligence. As someone who lives with a milk protein allergy, I unfortunately noted many errors with respect to the foods listed as "not containing the allergen." Guacamole (often made with sour cream), margarine (frequently contains lactose and/or milk protein), and sausages (many brands contain cheese) were just a few that caused me to raise the red flag. Your own questions and food label reading would still be required when utilizing this book.
Luckily, the authors do relay what questions to ask, and in many different languages. Kim Koeller has traveled extensively while living with multiple food allergies. This is well evidenced by the resources provided, including a multi-lingual phrase section and what seems to be a very useful airline guide. For those most interested in travel, the authors of "Let's Eat Out!" have also produced a "Multi-Lingual Phrase Passport" for food allergies that is pocket-sized. I thought this was a very handy little guide!

I was a little disapointed because many of the allergy graphs show gluten as possible, so that isn't much of a help, since that was already a given. I guess if you are looking for some where to START looking for gluten in your food, then this is a place to start. If you have been doing it for a while, then you really don't need this book....
