5 out of 5 stars Superb resource book.......2007-05-03

I had this series of books before - loaned them out at work and never got them back (go figure!). Happy to have found them again here.

2 out of 5 stars Even company money could be spent more effectively.......2003-06-17

For any medium to advanced trainer, group leader, or presenter, this book does not raise any new methods of improving audience participation. In fact, the "cheese" factor is enough to choke even the most discriminating mouse.

Having said that, if you're a beginner with little to no background in or exposure to group training, then this book may help give you a little head start to realize how to engage an audience through active participation.

It's only because of the potential to aide a beginner that I rated this a 2. Otherwise, it's sitting with a lone star.

4 out of 5 stars Decent.......2001-07-25

I was expecting more. But it certainly lived up to its title. Maybe my expectations were a little to hight.

I have yet to try any of the examples yet, but I am certainly waiting to try.

2 out of 5 stars It's not that great........2000-01-30

This book wasn't that great. There were VERY few ideas that I would use. I wouldn't recommend buying this book.

4 out of 5 stars Great for any Organizational leader!.......1999-01-25

I used a bunch of ideas from this book for my position in a student organization. A definite must for programs on dry material. It never hurts to have an ace up your sleeve, and this book is it!

4 out of 5 stars Too Much a Duplicate of the TV Show.......2002-04-17

I like to watch both the TV show and "Arthur" chapter books and normally I enjoy the chapter books for adding in funny and interesting details that don't really fit into the short time-frame of the TV show. I give this four stars for a well-written portrayal of what happened on the TV show, but there really isn't that much of the extra stuff. Also, it's not as humorous as some of the other stories.

4 out of 5 stars A pretty good book.......2001-11-18

This Arthur book is kind of boring, but it has a unique storyline. The plot goes smoothly, and the characters are believeable in the way they handle the situation. So if you like Arthur books, this is one of the best books that all kids will enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars not for kindergartners.......2000-04-28

The book had a good story line. I was trying to introduce my kindergartener to chapter books. She's at a 2nd grade reading level and I wanted to raise her vocabulary level. She remebered the show that goes with the book. She liked the book but said she didn't understand alot of the words, and she didn't have the patience to read the book all in one sitting. Definitely this book is for the older child who has more patience.

Book Description

Is it possible for a company to grow its revenues and profits by 10 percent or more for at least ten consecutive years, not counting acquisitions? That's an incredibly high bar for growth and profitability, one that 99.99 percent of American companies can't meet— including the famous ones that routinely land on magazine covers.

Management expert Jason Jennings screened 100,000 companies to identify nine little- known firms that have delivered stellar performance for a full decade or more, despite the ups and downs of the economy. And, as he reveals in his new book, these superstars have a lot in common despite their wide range of industries, which includes software, food services, medical supplies, and sporting goods.

It turns out that the best long-term performers all combine the strengths of a big organization with the hunger of a start-up. They build excellent relationships with their customers, suppliers, workers, and shareholders. They groom future leaders at all levels. They balance their short-term goals with their long-term visions. And they teach their managers to get their hands dirty.

Jennings did extensive interviews at his nine featured companies to find out exactly how they consistently increase revenue and profits without using manipulation or gimmickry. He reveals their unique approach to leadership and shows how any company, no matter what size or industry, can benefit from following their examples.

Think Big, Act Small may be the most powerful management book since Good to Great and Execution.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-08-23

I loved this book. It's an easy, enjoyable read, and very rich in information on how companies we know and love have made it through difficult times and the habits and beliefs they live on a day-to-day basis. Very interesting and insightful. I plan to re-read it in case I missed anything the first go-round.

5 out of 5 stars 10 successful companies explain what makes them great........2007-05-30

The book covers the study of 10 companies that have had an increase in revenue and profit of 10%, or more, for 10 consecutive years. There are many similarities with "Good to Great", however, this book deals with smaller companies and the leader at the helm is written about in more detail than "Good to Great". Like any great book on leadership and business you will find that the key to greatness is, you guessed it, FUNDAMENTALS. I particularly enjoyed the study of Koch Industries. Mr. Charles Koch guiding principles are outlined well in this book and I believe they are worth studying and implementing. They certainly have produced incredible results for his business conglomerate. Overall this book was well written and I was able to get some great nuggets of practical information from all 10 of the companies studied. I really enjoyed it, and got enough out of it to give it the 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Stories of Business Practices, Culture, & Philosophy of Nine Successful Companies.......2007-01-20

This is a great business practice/philosophy book. It doesn't throw numbers at you or tell you how to hit your quarterly target. Instead, the stories of nine culturally healthy and monetarily profitable companies are told. The format is interviews with the company leaders and other key players. Jennings expounds on the interviews and builds similarities among the companies. For instance, these companies don't acquire customers or clientèle, they build communities and fans.

The stories are inspiring because they truly start from the beginning. For example, Dick Cabela purchased fishing flies in Chicago for only pennies apiece. When he returned home to the Midwest, he put an ad in a sportsmen magazine and the orders started to roll in. He and his wife filled orders on the kitchen table and their first warehouse was the shed in the backyard. Today, Cabela's is one of the largest outdoors specialty merchandisers/retailers in the US, grosses more than $1.5B, and their stores are considered tourist attractions.

One more story: Charles O'Reilly and his son Chub worked at an automotive parts store for years. Charles was let go at the age of 72 and Chub was transferred out of state by some higher-ups, as I like to call them. So Charles decided to open a competing store. Chub was a cofounder and they also hired 10 employees from their competitors under one condition, "anyone joining the new company had to make an investment and become and owner."

These companies don't make big 5-10 year plans, instead they focus on today through next year and sometimes two years ahead. They claim making big plans never work because trends, business, technology, etc. change too often and you lose site of the fundamentals and current goals and neglect suppliers (partners) and customers (the community). Additionally, resources are wasted trying to achieve something that might never be. However, they do focus on being extremely adaptable; ready to refocus the entire company or invent new businesses in short notice.

Bottom line, all the stories and lessons are inspiring and invaluable. Considerable focus is placed on the cultures of these companies. Basically, they don't worry about making money and acquiring customers. They concentrate on building a healthy culture, make sure employees are happy, and provide solutions to problems; gaining wealth and customers is only an axiomatic consequence.

The nine companies interviewed are PETCO, Koch Industries, Sonic, Cabela's, Medline Industries, O'Reilly Automotive, Dot Foods, SAS Institute, Strayer Education. The companies presented have grown revenues by at least 10% for 10 consecutive years.

4 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-01-10

This book reminds us to set aside our own egos when managing a business or a department. It is a quick read with a clear message. I would recommend that all senior managers and those who aspire to be a senior manager read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Model Organizations, Outstanding Leadership.......2007-01-09

What stands out about this Think Big, Act Small is that the ten companies the author highlights are not only model organizations and true to their mission, they also have the benefit of outstanding leadership. What struck me, especially in light of the culture of the rock star CEO is that for the most part, those who lead these organizations wants no part of that star mystique. Instead, they are interested in building organizations that stay true to their employees, their partners, and ultimately, to their customers.

KnightofGod spoke about some of the common sense lessons, that surprisingly enough are not as common place as you would think. I think that's the crux of how these companies operate. They adopt a common sense approach to their business, placing little bets along the way, quietly go about building their reputation, and where I think most companies truly fall short, give their employees a sense of ownership, either emotionally or by giving them a piece of the company.

For the CEO's that think a part of their job is to be on CNBC, it certainly is refreshing to read about executives who to a certain extent shun the spotlight. Not only are they averse to being on stage, they also shun the trappings of CEO-life. It is in stark contrast to the stories we have all read about.

Jenning's lays out ten "Building Blocks" to think big, but act small. In each of his ten cases, to one degree or another, these building blocks were a cornerstone or some component to their success. He also provides the reader with an evaluation to determine where their companies fall in a "The Quad," or the four types of companies (TSAS, TSAB, TBAB, TBAS - See Robet Morris' excellent review for further details).

Ultimately, Think Big, Act Small, is a great book on how ten companies did things their own way, shunning the advice of investment bankers and the demands of wall street. In most cases it gave each company the liberty to do what they thought was best for them, their partners and their companies. And in each case, the beneficiary has been the client.

I highly recommend Think Big, Act Small. If you are a commuter like me, reading this book is time well spent as you wait for your stop.

Book Description

An overweight teen is sure that she’s the weakest link in her high-powered family - until her handsome, athletic, star-student brother has a shocking fall from grace.

Fifteen-year-old Virginia Shreves has a larger-than-average body and a plus-size inferiority complex. She lives on the Web, snarfs junk food, and follows the "Fat Girl Code of Conduct." Her stuttering best friend has just moved to Walla Walla (of all places). Her new companion, Froggy Welsh the Fourth (real name), has just succeeded in getting his hand up her shirt, and she lives in fear that he’ll look underneath. Then there are the other Shreves: Mom, the successful psychologist and exercise fiend; Dad, a top executive who ogles thin women on TV; and older siblings Anaïs and rugby god Byron, both of them slim and brilliant. Delete Virginia, and the Shreves would be a picture-perfect family. Or so she’s convinced. And then a shocking phone call changes everything.

With irreverent humor, insight, and surprising gravity, Carolyn Mackler creates an endearingly blunt heroine whose story will speak to every teen who struggles with family expectations - and serve as a welcome reminder that the most impressive achievement is to be true to yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Not a Self-Help Guide, But Still Super Inspirational.......2007-07-28

I just finished this book, and I couldn't put it down. It is not an action-thriller or crime story. Instead, it's a realistic story told from a to-the-point perspective. Virginia Shreves is "not FAT fat. Just chubby fat." Her family is full of perfect brunettes (and skinny ones, FYI), so she's always been the oddball. But that's what you have to love about her. She's so real.

I could completely relate to this story, because I had problems with weight, too. Reading the dieting tips Virginia came up with made me laugh and think. The book is basically about a girl who is heavier than your average teen, and who has a hard time fitting in with her own family.

I never read anything by Carolyn Mackler before, except for a story in a magazine, but after reading The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things, I'm looking forward to picking up another book by her. Reading about Virginia's struggles to find some confidence made me realize that "fat" is not a bad thing. As long as you are healthy (and not making yourself vomit in a toilet) and happy with yourself, it's all good.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Candid Teen Fiction.......2007-03-30

Virginia Shreves feels like the blonde, overweight exception to her perfectly fit, brunette family. Her mother is a beautiful adolescent psychologist, her father rarely around but equally successful, and her brother is the big man on campus at Columbia University. Virginia lives by her laugh-out-loud hilarious Fat Girl Code of Conduct, and has recently started an awkward romantic relationship with class reject Froggy. Virginia's perceptions change as she realizes her family dynamic isn't as simple as she thought. Her mom unfairly criticizes Virginia for being overweight, and her brother's social status is ruined by a campus scandal. Said scandal and Virginia's language when dealing with issues in her life make this book more appropriate for mature teen readers, but this book is a wonderfully funny, realistic portrayal of high school life of an overweight female teen trying to lose weight for all the wrong reasons.

5 out of 5 stars The earth, my butt and other big round things.......2007-03-27

The book "The earth, my butt, and other big round things" is about a teenage girl named Virginia whoes parents don't appriciate her very much because they think she's overweight. Throughout the book, many things happen to Virginia such as her friend living in Walla Walla for a year. Also, she decides to change her style by dying her hair purple and getting an eyebrow ring. In her family, a lot of things are going on with her brother. Overall, Virginia is going through many teenage things throughout this book.

There were many good parts in this book. My favorite part was when Virginia goes on the airplane to go visit her friend Shannon and gets her eyebrow pierced. This was a very funny part.

I would definately recommend this book to a lot of people. I would say that this was a girls book. You would like it if you like books about teenagers problems. This was my favorite book I've read in a while and I would say you would probably like it. There were many funny parts in it. Overall, this is a very good book for teenage girls to read.

4 out of 5 stars Fat Girl Code of Conduct.......2007-03-11

There is really nothing wrong with being larger than average. Comprehending this is not something Virginia Shreves is able to do. On top of that, she is in denial, refusing to look in a mirror. Once she finally comes to grips with the fact that being overweight isn't something she wants, she decides to drop the pounds. Sadly, nothing is working. After weeks of hating herself, Virginia realizes that her problem isn't so much her weight as her self esteem. Once she grasps this concept, not only does her self respect go up, but she does things (like kickboxing) to actually change herself. So, in the end, everything works out all right.
Normally, Virginia stays comfortably in her penthouse apartment in NYC. She loves it there because you can easily walk to anything you want or need. But when her best friend Shannon (who just moved to Walla Walla, Washington) invites her to spend Thanksgiving with their family in Seattle, Virginia just can't refuse.
Once in Seattle, Virginia's outlook on herself begin to drastically change. She and Shannon decide to do something outrageous for Thanksgiving, and agree on both piercing something. While Shannon gets her tongue done, Virginia settles for her eyebrow. Turning out to be a real turning point for Virginia's new look, everyone (including Virginia, of course) absolutely adores her eyebrow ring.

5 out of 5 stars The three little pigs with a twist.......2007-08-06

My son had to have this book. Just from looking at the cover one time! And once we had it in the house, it has become the forever read book. It's illustrations by Helen Oxenbury are amazing and the story will delight children of all ages. It's not scary but it does make you think a bit. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Here's one for the Wolves.......2007-07-30

I bought this book as a gift for the younger daughter of a friend. Since I had ordered Harry Potter for her sister, I wanted her to have something too. It turned out to be one terrific gift in many ways. As a parent and teacher, I would never give a book to a child without checking it first for suitability. I found the story delightful -- warmhearted and humorous. "And the moral of the story is . . . " even better than the original.
The best part for me was that the wolves, those so unfairly maligned family animals, are the Good Guys.
And oh yes, she loved it.

The three Little Wolves and The Big Bad Pig
By Eugene Trivizas

Once three little wolves got some bricks and made a house. But then the big bad pig came along and used a siedgehammer to make the house fall down.So the wolves asked a beaver with concrete for some and made a house.Next the pig came to the house and made it fall down. Then the rinno gave the wolves strong stuff to make a house with.Finlly the pig came and te house fell down and the wolves got some flowersand made a house and the pig came smelled the flowers and was good.
The theme of this book is stick together because the wolves don't go on different trails. The message is don't leave your family behind because the wolves don't leave each other behind. The gerne is fantasy fiction because wolves can not talk.I reccommed this book to my mom because she wants to make a strong house.
I like this book because the charactors different then the other three little pig books.I think the pig and the wolves were dran well because they were detaled.I like how the wolves were determaned to make a strong house.I liked the unacspeced events when the pig made the house fall down.

The three little wolves
And the
Big bad pig
by Eugene Trivizas and Helen Oxenbury

Once a momma wolf told her young it was time to live somewhere else but together. Soon they built their house of bricks; soon the big bad pig showed up he smashed the house with a sludge hammer luckily they all got away. They built two more houses one. The three little wolves built one more house hoping to not let it go to waist and it didn't. When the pig come to the next house of flowers he turned to a good guy because the flowers were nice and refreshing
The theme of this book is responsibility because the three little pigs need to look after each other and that is responsibility. The message of this book is to use your time wisely because the first three houses were not thought out and didn't have much time used on it. The genre of this book is fantasy fiction or fairy tale because animals can't talk. I reccomend this book to people who don't take their time because it could wreck or get messed up.
I liked this book because it has well detailed illustrations. They make the book seem real. I also liked the unpredictable and dangerous weapons. I loved the way the author switched the characters around by making the pig bad and the wolves good. I also liked the way there were many different event like how the pig turns good when the pigs build a house of flowers. I liked how the wolves made so many creative houses epically the one made of concrete.

    Big Mouth

No I did not. I did not, I did not. I did not say those things, and I did not plan those things. Won't It anyone believe me?

    Ugly Girl

All right, Ugly Girl made a mistake. I'd told my mom what I'd heard in the cafeteria, and she'd told Dad. Evidently. I'd thought for sure they would want me to speak up for the truth.

"A seasoned pro from the world of adult literature turns her keen observer's eye to young-adult realism, with notable success. Honest and penetrating" (Kirkus Reviews). Matt Donaghy has always been a BIG MOUTH. But it's never gotten him in trouble -- until one day when two detectives escort him out of class for questioning. Matt has been accused of threatening to blow up Rocky River High School. Ursula Riggs has always been an UGLY GIRL. A loner with fierce, staring eyes, Ursula has no time for petty high school stuff like friends and dating -- or at least that's what she tells herself. Ursula is content with minding her own business. And she doesn't even really know Matt Donaghy. But Ursula is the only person who knows what Matt really said that day ¿ and she is the only one who can help him. In her first novel for young adults, acclaimed author Joyce Carol Oates has created a provocative and unflinching story of friendship and family, and of loyalty and betrayal. "A thought-provoking, character-driven drama" (Booklist, starred review). "A fast-moving, timely, compelling story" (School Library Journal, starred review).

    5 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised.......2007-04-22

This was my first Oates book so I had no idea what to expect. What I got was a book with very well written characters and a good premise. Both main characters are completely believable and their friendship is described i a very good way. The parts focusing on "Ugly girl" are written in first person and Oates really manages to get the right voice for a teenage girl. Or at least it felt authentic to me, but I'm admittedly not a teenage girl.

The book also has its satirical moments and overall a good understanding of human nature. "Big Mouth and Ugly Girl" is a great read for kids and adults alike.

    4 out of 5 stars B MUG.......2007-04-12

Big Mouth and Ugly Girl is a book about a boy who is allegedly accused of stating that he is going to blow up the school. A girl named Ursula comes to his rescue when she testifies on the behalf that he didn't do it. This boy, Matt, and Ursula develop a special relationship that has its ups and downs throughout this book.
My favorite part of this book is when Ursula and Matt go to a kid's house to see if he took Matt's dog. I think this is a funny part. It shows a whole different side of the characters. I also liked it because the kid that they were "persecuting" had such a smart attitude towards them that it made it funny.
I would recommend this book to a few people. I would recommend it to people who are interested in teen life and drama and maybe people who like relationship stories. Other than that I wouldn't really recommend it. The book was a little slow moving, but once I got to a good part it was hard to put down. Also this book was kind of following the people involved in the plot but not enough about the plot.

This book is about finding out what rumors could lead to. You always have to be careful with what you say, you might endup in a tight squeez like matt donaghy.
What you will find inside this book:
    - respect
    - support
    - rumors
    - truth
    - friendship
    - depression
    - and a change of heart in the characters.
Have fun reading this book :D

2 out of 5 stars Review- Big Mouth and Ugly Girl.......2006-12-20

The book Big mouth and ugly girl" is written by Joyce Carol Oates. It is about a boy (Big Mouth) and a girl (Ugly girl), who go to Rocky River High School. One day, there was a bombthreat and Matt was suddenly involved, only Ursula helps him...

The story beginns with a big mistake. Matt is accused to make a bomb threat in the school cafeteria, but it was only a joke from him. Matt is a big mouth and he has many friends, but then the ting with the bomb thrat happen and he is involved by the others. He is suspended from school and his parents aren't proud of him anymore.
In the time, when he stays at home, he writes e-mails with Ursula. She has a spitted personality, on the one hand she is ugly girl and on the other hand she is Ursula. She has not many friends, but she stands behind Matt.
Matt is very angry about all the people, who believes the rumors , that he would blow up the school. So he sue the school. Therefore he become many problems, actually his dog was kipnepped.
At the end Ursula finds out, who really made the bomb threat. She also rescues Matt, who wnts to comitt suicide. They become very good friends and they are also not involved anymore, because all know currently the truth.
Big mouth and ugly girl have a big developement in their charakter...

I think, that it is a mean book. On the one side, it is interesting to read what happened to the main chrakters, who are very special. On the other side it's often boring, because it happens nothing exciting..
But I think it's a good book for teenagers. Also for reading in school. Sometimes there are many new vocabularys, but you can understand it.
