If you believe in and love stories of redemption, Some Kind of Different As Me is a must. If you know someone who does not believe in redemption or who is struggling to find it, give them this book and encourage their reading it.

This engaging book was given to me by my brother-in-law who, like me, grew up in the pre-segregated South working with black acquaintances who we liked because they did our menial work and our bidding. This story helped me to realize, in a new and fresh way, the bondage they were in. The account helped me realize the desperate position of poverty and the plight of one without education.

This is a true story of Ron Hall and Denver Moore, the two extremes of our society, who found friendship and God's gift of forgiveness, grace, and fulfillment in life through a lady named Debbie.

Denver was a sharecropper in Louisiana who escaped virtual enslavement on a freight train to Fort Worth, Texas where, without skills, he became a vagrant on the streets of that city. Alcohol, drugs, and 10 years in prison hardened him to a solitary, untrusting, antisocial street person without identity or hope.

Ron was a wealthy, self-sufficient, international art dealer who began to serve food once a week in a local mission at the insistence of his wife, Debbie, who had a strong social conscience. His first service was done just to please his wife and his involvement inflicted great wounds to his sensibilities. He was surprised to find himself intrigued to get to know the most distant the of the homeless that they served. After months of trauma without success, Ron finally gets Denver to agree to have coffee with him.

At that meeting Denver asks Ron a peculiar question. "There's something I heard about white folks that bothers me, and it has to do with fishin." "I heard that when white folks go fishin they do something called `catch and release'." "That really bothers me", Denver goes on to say, " I just can't figure it out. Cause when colored folks go fishin, we are really proud of what we catch and we take it and show it off to everybody that'll look. Then we eat what we catch. So it really bothers me that white folks would go to all that trouble to catch a fish, then when they done caught it, just throw it back in the water." "So, Mr. Ron, it occurred to me: If you is fishin for a friend you just gon'catch and release, then I ain't got no desire to be your friend." Suddenly his eyes gentled and he spoke more softly than before: But if you is looking for a real friend, then I'll be one. Forever." (pg. 106)

Their friendship does grow and in remarkable ways they help one another overcome great tragedy. As they face these trials together, you see them grow spiritually and truly become the Body of Christ. Redemption comes to both as they find blessing in serving instead of judging. They have different backgrounds, different opportunities but they both come to expressed the love of Christ. As Denver says, "He is our hope".

I know, it's THE Hunter S. Thompson book. It would be like having the gall to write a review for the Grapes of Wrath or Slaughterhouse Five and think you'd be doing anything other than blabbing just to see your own words on a computer screen.

That said, read this book this instant. Whatever good anyone's ever said about this book, it's twenty times better. I read it in two sittings and only stopped myself from reading it again because it was a library book and had to be returned.

The late HST's gift for gonzo, that strange mix of fiction and nonfiction, is ultimately realized in this book. Reality is seamlessly mixed with a bizarre fantasy world of sentient reptiles and split personality through the medium of hard drugs that serve to clarify (and sometimes amplify) a violent and twisted town in a strange time.

This book will have you laughing hysterically at parts, so don't read it around other people unless you're okay with passing it to them. This book will have you cringing at the brutality of human nature at points, so have your wits about you.

I really can't say anything else, other than that this book must be purchased and read this very instant if you haven't already done so.

¨Fear and Loathing¨ is a great ride for sure. A drug-addled, hilarious, disturbing romp through Las Vegas in search of the American Dream. Thompson is definitely a skilled writer and an outlaw and this stuff comes through in this book. I don't want to shrug this work off by any means, but I definately prefer his other work, such as ¨The Great Shark Hunt,¨ because it truly brings out Thompson's outlook on the world, his hatred of wealth, power and greed, etc. This book is fun, but Thompson is definitely capable of more depth and thought. While this work might be what gave him his big break, he definitely went on to better things.

The lost highway of the American Dream.

I wasn't old enough to remember much from the late 60's early 70's let alone the political aspects of Nixon's presidency or the drug culture of the time, so this review won't have any profound social or political commentary, except that comparisons can well be made to the drug culture of today, and it is glaringly apparent that not much has changed.

Considering the climate of the time: Nixon's presidency, the war in Vietnam, and the country's young men succumbing to the draft, it was no wonder that an entire generation wanted something more, for this was not the American Dream they had been sold. And for some, the only way to drown out the hypocrisy gnawing at your brain is to give your brain an escape. Expand your mind, as that might be the only part of you that is truly free. Whatever it takes to get you directly out of your head -- the higher the better. This story chronicles a journey utterly devoid of restraint and reason as these two men, Raoul Duke and Dr. Gonzo, and their trunk full of felonies set themselves loose upon Las Vegas -- the last vestige of the American Dream. However, their idea of the American Dream is not how most of us would understand it, but somehow, through the fog of hallucinatory metaphor, we can actually see and feel what the main characters are searching for so desperately.

All that aside, even if the 60's culture is beyond your age group, Thompson's writing is worth the read -- Brilliant, sarcastic, and frighteningly funny: Bars seething with has-been lounge lizards, tearing the patrons to shreds, blood soaked tacky hotel rooms, police car chases, kidnapping, gambling, excess, and debauchery ... not to mention the Narcotics Convention. The dialog is brilliant. Harrowing experiences abound; it is amazing that the two main characters make it out of Vegas alive.

Definitely a wild ride for all.

I want to go to New York to see this museum. This book was incredible and I loved the style of writing and the way the story unfolded letting each character have their own voice. I loved the notes at the end from the author. I really could tell she loved these characters and did care about their ever after. Every child should read this book. Wait, every adult should read this book!

Do you like adventure, mystery and fun? Well then this is the book for you. It is about a girl named Claudia (11), and her brother, Jamie(9); they decided to run away to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They worked together which helped them to survive many days and nights in the museum. I learned that you should work together no matter who it is you are working with; your brother, your sister, a friend, or even Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler! Twelve year old Claudia Kincaid, is bored with her life - being an "A" student all the time, not having a big allowance, and having to deal with being the only girl and oldest of all her brothers. So, she decides to change things a bit to make them exciting. She takes all her allowance, her brother's allowance, her brother (Jamie) and a trumpet and violin case and heads off on an enjoyable, fun adventure to the Metropolitan Museum of art in New York City. There, they take tours everyday, sleep in queens' beds and do whatever they please while being careful not to get caught. One day, they uncover a beautiful, exquisite statue of an angel. As they get to know more about this angel, they find out that it is a mystery. No one knows who actually created this angel. Claudia is determined to find out who the artist is. But will she ever figure it out without getting caught?

This book was full of adventure, and filled determination and concentration. I really enjoyed this book because I felt like I was in the story with the characters through their good and bad times. Konigsburg makes this story become so realistic, it comes to life.

I recommend this book for anyone who loves a good adventure. The plot and setting of Konigsburg's book makes it an incredible, thrilling quest that I am sure you will enjoy! I know I enjoyed it!

E.L. Konigsburg wrote, From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, a Newberry children or teens book. The book is about two children running away from their house and staying at the Metropolitan Museums of Art. The obstacles they go through to live independently include regrets from going anyway. It reminds you how much you care about your parents. While at the museum the kids find a mysterious puzzle that has clues that to an unexpected conclusion. There are no weaknesses in this book. I read this book because my Aunt is the author. I am not saying this book is good because I am related to the Author but because it is a fantastic and interesting novel. I totally recommend this book to anyone. There is also other books of hers that have won Newberry medals. A movie has been made to go with the book if you are more of a movie kind of guy.

This book was fun to read. I was able to identify with both characters - especially having grown-up in Detroit. But the couple definitely got a little bit too "holier than thou" at the end with all the Bible thumping.

In all fairness, the couple warned the reader that they were only giving their opinion of what's important in marriage - and that the reader could take it or leave it. If you like J. California Cooper there's a good chance you'll like this book also.

I've seen many celebrity marriages put in the spot-light as the "perfect union". They mostly breakup just like everyone else. I really hope and pray that Angela and Courtney stay together and continue living as a happy, loving husband, wife, and family.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Dr. Thompson made the list of inspirational scribes when I polled in a recent writing workshop, and why not? Back in a spiffy Modern Library edition, replete with additional essays, I find in this iconographic work that HST both invoked--and provoked--an era that was not so much the '60s proper, but rather the mean, shadow-filled death of that time, which is still playing out. Thank God Thompson was there to explode the myth of "objective" journalism and help pave the way for the pens and voices that followed.

Disclaimer: I am now in my mid 50's and realize what Thompson writes about and some of us lived probably isn't the best thing for society. That said every time I read this (at least 15 times in the past 35 years) I laugh until the tears pour down my face. Is this Pulitzer Prize material? Hardly. If you are looking for heavy plots good character development etc. look elsewhere. A warning, if you are so anal you can't see the humour in serious drug crazed humor don't read this (and why in God's name would you pooh?). I've also found that it doesn't cross generations all that well maybe because youngsters can't believe there was ever such a time. I have given this book to many friends, the young ones don't seem to get it. In closing this is a hilariously funny light book that will always be on my favorites list, but don't bother if you think drug humour should be banned. Just join the DEA and kill some innocent 88 year old black woman in the name of saving us from our selves

I first read this book after finding it on the bargain table at my college bookstore. I have read it several times since then, and have shared it with friends and students. From the first bizarre line to the last, it was hard to stop laughing. It is one of the unusual class of novels that truly enables you too look through another man's eyes, distorted as that vision may be. Admittedly, this is perhaps not for those who have never enjoyed being not sober. Still, if you are open minded, it is an amusing and enjoyable read.

I can't believe they actually made this into a movie. What crap!

Okay, I bought this just to see what the fuss was about. Stories of a guy getting doped up and drunk is not entertaining. Maybe because I've been around enough drunks and druggies growing up that I fail to see the humor. The fact that he was allowed to write books and have them published is shocking. Thompson was laughing all the way to the bank, or drug dealer, in his case. I've seen people do drugs to write better songs or paint better paintings, but to do drugs and then write about doing drugs, geez where's the talent in that? His talent was actually living to write about his trips and then getting some publishing house to give him money for writting his stories.

I believe people read it because of one of two reasons: 1) Like me, curious about why everyone finds him so interesting and talented; or 2) To experience what it is like to be drugged out without taking the actual drugs.

That title's not just the kickoff of the book but the state of the book itself. It's fast... really fast. I'm a slow reader and I cleared it in a couple sittings. That also suggests how engaging it is. There's something utterly captivating about what a shameless romp through Vegas these men have and I loved every sentence of it. Part of me is jealous of the drug addled adventure, part of me is revolted. In any case, I'm glad someone did it and they one upped that by sharing their story with the world. Thanks, Dr. Thompson.

The point of Stallabrass's Art Incorporated is to highlight the inextricable connection between contemporary art and the global market. He challenges the longstanding assumption that art exists in a realm untouched by the tedium and materialism of mainstream culture. The premise of his claims is that it is a myth that artists are uninfected by the vulgar concerns of economy and enjoy unfettered expressive possibilities. This "zone of freedom" as he calls it, is just a romantic façade for a mechanism of production that is primarily motivated and governed by the ebb and flow of capital.
The cause of this phenomenon is the "neoliberal" culture that emerged after the cold war. Even if Stallabrass's final argument is contested, it has to be acknowledged that a shift toward a free, global market has had an enormous impact on economy and culture and that it will undoubtedly have had effects on the art world as well. Stallabrass attacks art world insiders such as gallery owners and biennale organizers as the primary perpetuators of this phenomenon. He portrays them not as individuals but as a single, unified, money-minded entity. Despite this gross generalization, Stallabrass transcends vague, hypothetical evidence by citing several convincing instances of unsavory practices of high-profile art world beuroucrats. Included in this criticism is an identification of biennial supporters that often include major and minor corporations as in the Liverpool Biennial, or the conformity to global values as was the case in the Istanbul and Havana Biennials. Stallabrass successfully names the uneasy feeling that seems a ubiquitous accompaniment to such events: that they exist not only because of, but for art and corporate insiders of the highest rank.
Stallabrass goes as far as to say that art can be seen as simply a sub-department of larger corporate functioning. The art world caters to and supplements economy in an attempt to at least ride in the wake of the inevitable direction the global market plows its way toward. The art world is compelled to constantly compete alongside corporate interests, although through an often demented and rarefied version, with the increasingly advanced spectacle that mass culture offers. This is an easy conclusion to come to in light of the practice Stallabrass describes of artists submitting to gallery owners' demands for them to reconstruct expressly anti-consummerist works in order to make them more sellable. Solid arguments such as these though, lose some credibility when juxtaposed with such dogmatic and extreme assertions such as--"art may be imagined as consumerism's dreaming, playfully recombining the elements of mass culture in promiscuous assemblages, and along the way happening upon items of use."
Art Incorporated on the whole cannot be dismissed as cynical bad-mouthing but is an unhappy yet fairly accurate depiction of art world politics. It is true that Stallabrass can turn off readers by his broad generalizations, such as attributing a single characterization to an entire decade of artwork, but this is ultimately forgivable when considered as a necessity for the sake of argument. Art Incorporated is an essential text for anyone involved in the fine arts, if only as a point to be deliberated upon and measured against one's own experience of and participation in the art world.

Julian Stallabrass in Art Incorporated provides the reader with an account of contemporary art and its struggle for autonomy against the forces of neo-liberalism. This force can be seen in the hybridization and homogenization of current art caused by what Stallabrass identified in his writing as "the market". He also addresses the use of art as a commodity by investors, corporations, and governments. In his opinion these forces undermine art's autonomy, which he believes is a necessary and key feature of art's existence. Stallabrass gives a informative overview of the current historical context for art today. Most of this book focuses on examples of the negative effect this neo-liberalism is having on contemporary art. It is Stallabrass' goal to raise the reader's awareness of this issue, though he does little in the way of suggesting a course of action to address the problem.

Stallabrass draws from diverse examples to highlight these factors some of which I identified with as they developed my thinking. I am now certainly more prone to question the motives and the creative freedom in contemporary art as whole and in what is displayed in such diverse venues as art periodicals, galleries and museums, government funded programs, and especially biennale events. One compelling argument raised was the influence of the sponsor on the content of an event evidenced in biennales. Biennales are created to aid in the growth of a cities economy and acts as a status symbol. In making the biennale the most profitable, the curators cater to their rich visitors and therefore the art becomes a recipient of the homogenizing forces of globalization. (39) Stallabrass points to how in the Johannesburg Biennial the local artists selected were limited to those that were more western friendly, which in affect isolated not only the local artists, but also the much of the native audience. The work exhibited was more in the form of `post-conceptual art' using high tech media not accessible to the local artist. The biennale could have been profitable for the nation however the art being shown seemed to be commoditized to draw a crowd. It was not effective because the work was not what is actually occurring within the art scene of any culture, but instead represented a hybrid global product. In cases where local art is being exhibited, for instance in Cuba, (62) work that is low tech and more primitive appears to draw a larger economic interest and therefore that is what is being brought into the US. The artist's work has to meet the US market's expectation of what it thinks would be produced globally. In this way what may seem to be a positive result of globalization creating a market for native art may in actuality be a symptom of its negative affect on art. These points are well documented with these and other examples, however little commentary is offered on how to deal with these forces.

Meanwhile other arguments seemed contradictory to each other and were not fitting to the topic being discussed making parts of the book confusing and distracting. Stallabrass' recommendation for a reaction to these forces is to exploit them. One example that left me puzzled was that of the art corporation etoy, which used their Digital Hijack project to steer web users away from search engines to a site created by etoy, which greeted the viewer with a disturbing message (192). By this example, I was left wondering what does a hacker's interruption of a search engine have to do with art and what did it do to help preserver art's precious autonomy, which Stallabrass effectively informs us is under attack.

This book can be recommended for its value in identifying of an issue, namely the effect of a neo-liberal based market on contemporary art, but it should not be looked to for answers of what one should do about it. Another way to say this is that Stallabrass accomplishes his goal of raising the issue and stimulating thought, while mainly leaving it to us the reader to determine how we will respond to the situation and keep art autonomous.

Julian Stallabrass tries to capture the art world from the advent of neoliberalism in the 1940's. Moving internationally, the art world is forced to embrace consumerist culture. Culture wars between the political right and the left, the merging of fine art and mass produced materials (that of kitsch), and the beginning of art forms such as installation art has all had profound effects on the movement of the art market.

Stallabrass approaches these issues very broadly and expects his audience to view it as an overview of topics to research more closely. Stallabrass jumps right in to relating artists to the art world but does not provide any foundation for what neoliberalism is in context to the globalized art market. I suggest to do some research first on that term. In short however, neoliberalism pertains to the privatization of the art market i.e .: the corporations. This foundation is free in some respects but the consumer and the artist always need to be thinking about who is funding them and therefore, censoring themselves. Stallabrass talks about privatization in length and stresses it's dismal effects in the art world.

One topic that worldwide privatization has affected is biennials. Reaching out to struggling countries runs the risk of being ill received such as in South Africa (38). Overall, the outreach into other countries pushes western ideals instead of embracing the culture of the land. This may just mean that these countries are not ready for an elitist cultural arena. The interesting aspect of this dialogue, however, was the idea that artists in struggling countries are dealing with issues that can jump through history. The extreme social differences in terms of wealth might very well produce some of the most interesting work. Instead of dealing with petty ironies and pure aesthetic conditions, the artist in a struggling country might have more to say.

Another effect of privatization was brought up describing Tracey Emin's work in chapter 4: uses and prices of art. Stallabrass compares her work to that of a robot that spits out predictable work.

"Such artists as brands are again allegorical figures that, like robots, deliver particular and predictable behavior along with other outputs (145)." Corporate sponsorship of exhibitions is a danger because it leads to less radical thought and content. If museums create themselves with restrictions including branding themselves in color, text, and style, the likelihood of the exhibitions to be extremely dry is much greater. Stallabrass also mentions Damien Hirst 'Absolut Hirst' add that backs up his claim that advertising and corporations might filter too much of the "art" out of the art (133).

Stallabrass's observations are sarcastic and quite apocalyptic. Free expression is a luxury from the past. It is impossible now to make artwork that is free from the burden of the art world. One can take talking points and further research from Stallabrass and choose whether or not to leave the doomsday feeling behind.

Stallabrass's Art Incorporated is an in depth and wordy portrayal of the inner workings and politics involved with the contemporary art world. It must be said that the reader should already hold a significant understanding of art history as a whole to appreciate what Stallabrass discusses.


Art Incorporated is a short overview focusing mostly on the economic and political effects and relations that occurs between the art world and the rest of society. Stallabrass, at great length, explores the effects of large corporation sponsorship of art world endeavors, and the effects it has on artistic autonomy. Art must meet the demands and/or limitations set by the presenters. When the presenters happen to be big business there are aspects that would hinder the artist's freedom of expression as to not sully the brand name of the sponsor. While presenting further examples and explanations of this goings on, Stallabrass relates the influence of globalization and the further comodification of the art world.

Art Incorporated also focuses on global politics and how the art world is an active participant in our globalization. These goings on have their positive and negative aspects, which Stallabrass seeks to unearth. In the text he touches on controversial subjects that occur in the art world that have unforeseen consequences on things outside itself.

The book explores the effects of globalization on the art world. Biennials are a very stylish event for the wealthy globetrotter and Stallabrass is the first to point out that this is whom they are for. While taking the guise of a culture enhancer for the host city, Stallabrass exposes the shortcomings. He presents many examples of the sacred biennial acting in a colonialist manor, only allowing in things deemed acceptable by the western (buyers) standards.

While Stallabrass is effective in his presentation of highly relevant conditions of the contemporary art world, he fails to make amends with what he sees as a very dire situation. However, this may not be entirely out of line. Stallabrass absolutely presents an apocalyptic vision of the art world, but makes a good argument to back up his opinions. The proposals that Stallabrass presents as possible ways to side step our flawed art world systems are far from adequate do to his anarchic perspective. His suggestions involve destruction of art, as well as free art over the internet, both of which solve the problem in a very narrow manor. Still, solutions to revive art's dyeing or dead freedom are escaping everyone, not just Stallabrass. His analysis may leave the reader with a stark and hopeless view of art's autonomy and freedom of expression, but this may in fact be the case.

Stallabrass's rhetoric may be enigmatic especially to those with little background in the subject. Stallabrass's prose, often laden with unnecessary verbiage, works against his objective to clearly communicate his viewpoints. This is not to say that there are no good points. There are many very valuable and interesting concepts presented in the text.

The Keynesian model of Government funding is becoming less prevalent and presents an opposite attitude. Stallabrass talks about this issue in length.

If you every had any thoughts on what the South was like pre 1964, then this certainly is the book for you. Ms O'Connor packs us in and takes us for a long journey into the South. What do we see along the way? Greed, ignorance, hatred under the guise of religion, and even cold bloodied murder. None of the stories come off as preachy, nor are the characters people that we would be drawn to or run from. They are in fact versions of people that we have know in our lives and see every day.
What we see is a glimpse of their core what motivates them. The stories show us that we are a products of our enviornment and the risks of being consumed by it.

O'Connor is one of my three favorite Southern writers, along with Carson McCullers and William Faulkner. I just love all that gothy/dark humor, the grotesque characters with their own unique beauty twisted with the ugliness of pride, involved in complex and deformed situations, the bizarre and twisted obsession with Christianity into a warped sense of morality. O'Connor's stories mainly focus on female protagonists that lose a grip on their power over their world, fall from grace and pride, mostly due to shady male figures. She spins fascinating and tragic, yet beautiful tales with a poetic, real style with the third-person limited perspective. Besides Good Country People, my favorite story in this collection was A Temple of the Holy Ghost and A Late Encounter with the Enemy. Excellent short stories from an amazing author. Grade: A

This is probably one of the best collections of short stories out there. Nobody did short stories better. Written fifty years ago, sure, but reading and re-reading these stories over the years, I have to say that O'Connor was one of the best short story writers of the past century, hands down.

I don't care if it's southern gothic or grotesque or whatever O'Connor is labeled in Academia, or whatever her place in literary history may be, or if some readers disagree and find her stories boring or depressing (sigh); these stories are so effortlessly masterful, and when you read an O'Connor story, it's like hearing a unique singer's voice, Johnny Cash or Otis Redding: you know it's O'Connor the second you start the story. Each one begins at just the right moment, the dialogue and characters and situations are so REAL, despite the outward absurdity of them, she convinces you through her rendering, that these events happened.

Think of it her as the reality TV of the fiction world, as horrible as that may sound. Her characters don't "act" and aren't pawned into position, they are real, and they speak realistically, they behave realistically, and the stories are told in such a way that you feel you aren't reading a story at all, but imagining the same dream she had when she wrote them. She never betrays her characters, never condescends or makes fun of them, and her metaphors, BTW, are the best their were ("her face was as broad and innocent as a cabbage"); the way she dropped into a story, pieced out the characters, how she developed tension and situations that often yield tragic circumstances, her language...well, she does it so convincingly, and I am not one easily convinced.

O'Connor was the genuine article, and this book is the evidence of her indisputible greatness. It's been said that O'Connor claimed she wrote all these stories as parables, and I think when you read them you'll see (and what many people have trouble with) is that her stories do have a picaresque quality to them, and the characters at times do seem like stock southern characters. But its how well she knows these characters, how she protrays them that makes them so memorable. She rose to fame being one of the voices of the South - and perhaps some of the book is therefore dated and not as cutting edge as it was then. But it has endured, on the strength and appeal of the stories.

Is O'Connor for everyone? Heck no. But I guarantee you - guarantee you - if you read one of her stories, even if you don't like it, it'll haunt you for years, you'll remember all the little moments as if you'd dreamt them yourself. And you'll come back, whether by accident or purposefully, and you'll re-read the story, and it'll mess you up. She's THAT good.

Flannery O'Connor is one of great American writers of the 20th century, a Southern Gothic stylist of the first order. She won the National Book Award for the posthumous 1972 collection, 'The Complete Stories'.

O'Connor sets her stories in the rural South and populates them with flawed, grotesque, and twisted characters - this is not the imagined noble, glorious, and chivalric South, but rather the real South of the poor and middling whites of the 1950's(race is mostly in the background). She catches the nuances of human behavior. Her stories have powerful, unexpected and disturbing endings.

Pick up a story and read just one paragraph and you will be hooked.

"The old woman and her daughter were sitting on their porch when they saw Mr. Shiftlet come up their road for the first time. The old woman slid to the edge of her chair and leaned forward, shading her eyesfrom the piercing sunset with her hand. The daughter could not see far in front of her and continued to play with her fingers. Although the old woman lived in this desolate spot with only her daughter and she had never seen Mr. Shiftlet before, she could tell, even from a distance, that he was a tramp and no one to be afraid of..."

Absolutely the highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars Classic American Fiction Straight from the Bible Belt.......2006-05-17

The ten short stories in this collection are definitely masterpieces. Neither too long or too short, the stories suggest whole worlds, entire lives (and deaths) with just the right number of verbal brushstrokes. Never preachy or self-righteous, they are yet infused with a deep, complex spirituality that seems to consist of an eccentric and compelling hybrid of Roman Catholicism's quiet mysticism and Southern Protestantism's revivalism and rigor. That said, this is not "chicken soup for the soul"...pretty much every story has a dark edge, and in most of them the author gets you with this impending sense of dread that things are going to go to heck in a hand basket, the only question is how (this makes the book awfully hard to put down, by the way). And she has an incredible talent of capturing the rhythms and characteristic expressions of Southern English without too much Mark Twain twang. In short, this is hands down a classic of American literature.

I love this book. If you enjoy cultural trivia you would enjoy this book which is made up of 3-5 paragraph stories. I started reading them to my 10 and 12 year old kids and they love them.

I have both This book and I believe its called More of the rest of the story. To give you an expample of why I loved this book Im going to give you a short preview of one of my favorite storys Im not sure which of the books its in but I liked both books equally

A man was engaged to a woman named Lucy she was the daughter of a Senator Who a President named Ambasador to Spain Lucy Broke off the engagement cause she went with her family History tells his This man killed this president for a different reason and he may have killed this president Anyway But could he have been thinking about Lucy too.

Paul Harvey of couse tells this story better I was trying not to give anything away But this story led me to go buy a book on this particular asassination.

It was a fun book, full of very short storys.

Paul Harvey is a master at condensing the essence of a story into a few short paragraphs. These transcripts of his popular syndicated radio program serve as great models for anyone looking to create intriguing little stories for business presentations and sales letters. Highly recommended.

I read this book about 15 years ago and was delighted to find it on amazon. This is a keeper, one that you can browse through over and over again. It contains stories of little known aspects of the lives of very well known people and is rather like an encyclopaedia based on People magazine. The element of surprise at the end gives a delightful twist to each story.

As Napoleon indicated, History is the lies upon which we've all agreed. There is no such thing as a work of history that doesn't leave some important element out. Partly that's to make history more palatable for a new generation -- who really wants to know about dentistry in the Colonial era when we're reading about George Washington and his false teeth? No matter what the reason, though, once an item is left out of history it tends to disappear permanently.

Unless Paul Harvey Jr. gets his hands on it.

Paul Harvey Jr, who writes the short vignettes for his father's radio show "The Rest of the Story," has a gift for uncovering forgotten facts. Did you know there was another Three Stooges? Did you know Jack Benny was invited to join the Marx Brothers? Did you know one of our Founding Fathers kept his wife chained in the basement because of persistent congenital madness? I hadn't known that.

This book is an incomplete collection of Harvey's vignettes for his father's show. Some are published under the name "Paul Aurendt," and if you can find them, jump on them with both feet. However, this book provides a good primer for the forgotten corners of history, and also allows you to own copies of the vignettes Harvey has made famous over the last 25 years. One can only hope that Harvey's example will inspire more historians to investigate the forgotten corners of history and find what's been otherwise forgotten. I'd buy more of these books if more of them were available.
