Acrylic Landscape Painting Techniques.......2006-07-31
I like the book. I like the way Hugh Greer paints and I would like to go out and do likewise. The beginning starts out with full explanation - then he gives you ways to use what he wants to teach you - but he does it with very complicated examples and not much explanation. He skips a lot of steps. I am still trying some of his ideas and hope that I can learn them because I really like his results. This book is much, much more helpful if you get his DVDs, he has three -first is very basic, but the next two go a long way to explaining some of the steps he left out.

Somewhat Lacking.......2003-03-03
I bought this book hoping it would give me basic information on color mixing, brush technique and composition. It did not. The book has some beautiful examples of the author's art but gives very little information as to how he got there. It is not a step-by-step instruction book. Mr. Greer does not tell how to handle the acrylic medium as for as how to mix and apply the paint to get various results. If you are a beginning landscape painter looking for basic instruction in acrylic painting techniques, buy another book. If you have the basics down pretty well then this book may be for you. The author is a good landscape painter but not the greatest teacher.

The book could use a bit more detail in the instructions. If you've seen his show(s), or had some art instruction, you'll have a better understanding of the technique and what he's talking about & be fine. Someone starting from scratch may have a few questions, but will be able to figure it out or contact Jerry on his web site. Photos are clear. The paintings he's demonstrating in the book are chosen from TV or DVD's/videos he has available. I'd suggest buying the books & DVD's together as they are a great compliment to each other. Jerry is an accomplished artist and a wonderful teacher. There's always something to learn from him and he's always willing to share the tricks of the trade to help make his students better artists.

This is a great beginners book that gradually exposes you to painting techniques. Its amazing what you can do with this book. I recommend it highly!

After watching Jerry Yarnell's TV show a few times on PBS, they stopped showing it. I wanted more from Mr. Yarnell and found he has written several books. The books are clear and informative and the pictorials are great.

I am a big Jerry Yarnell fan. He is an excellent teacher and it really shows in his instructional books. I had the good fortune to attend one of his workshops, and really learned a lot. I expect to be able to continue to learn from these books.
From what I can tell, the books do not have to be followed in a specific order. I have the first four volumes in the series. What I plan to do is to work on the techniques presented in this first volume and at that point, I'll just pick paintings from his other books that I like.
The paintings are selected to help you develop specific techniques that will be of good general use and he gives step by step instructions and includes color photographs of the paintings at each stage to give you an idea of what each step should look like.
He gives instructions for mixing the colors required at each step too. He doesn't give an exact formula for the colors since brands and grades of paints vary so much. What he does do is to give you the colors and a relative idea of how much to use of each. You then can develop your eye by mixing until the color looks right. It doesn't take long to figure it out and it is much better for developing your color mixing skills than a rote formula.
Jerry also uses a limited number of colors in his palette. This really help with developing you color mixing skills too. He tell you what brushes you need and how to use them as well.
If there is another set of instructional books that is better than these, I haven't found them.
If you go to his web site [...] and click on Books, you can see slide shows of the paintings that are taught in each book. This will give you a better feel for which ones you want to try.

I have many how to paint books and Dorothy Dent's are my favorite. This book includes 5 lessons in acrylic and 5 lessons in oils and her step-by-step instructions are very clear and easy to follow. She also includes exact colors to use which would be helpful to the beginner artist. I have recreated all of her pictures with surprising success. She also includes templates you can enlarge to transfer the image to your canvas. I would highly recommend this book and her other acrylic "Realistic Landscapes" step-by-step book.

A very straght forward and very simple to understand book on perspective. Sure there are more complex and detailed books on this subject on the market, many of which are on my book shelf, but this one is great for beginners and intermediate painters. His video on perspective makes a nice companion to this book.

Acrylics Made Fun!.......2006-12-27
I have every one of Brenda's instruction books and I've enjoyed each and every one. It is my opinion that this is her finest book to date.
I have been a painting teacher for over twenty-five years and I have found her books to be a great way to help those students wanting to learn about acrylics. While acrylic painting can be intimidating to some, I have found that Brenda's techniques using Clear Blend, White Blend and Slow Blend not only give the painter the 'extra' time they would like but it also makes it all nearly 'goof proof'. The step-by-step paint along lessons take you through the learning process in an easy to follow manner. I would suggest this or any of her past books if you are interested in learning a new painting method. Also, Brenda even encourages the begining student to go ahead and use the bottle acrylics if they don't want to buy all new supplies for a painting medium they may or may not enjoy. Once you find that you too enjoy using acrylics you can then move toward a product with a heavier pigment.
This North Light Book publication has 112 pages with over 163 colored photos to help you along the way plus 10 pages of patterns.
