A Fun Read!.......2007-08-09
This is a great series for children and adults alike. I started reading it to see if it would be a good book for my classroom and ended up reading them all for my own enjoyment!
The entire series so far has been a captivating indulgence!.......2007-08-03
Each book in the series makes an excellent bed time story- or daytime too!
Just like the fairy-tales many of the characters are based upon, this book will put children of all ages, ESPECIALLY younger ones in awe!
Im 12, and the series so far has been delightfully satisfying to me.
When ever I need a break form a heavy, and intence (but veryveryvery good) book such as Harry Potter, The Sisters Grimm books are much appreciated!
My point is, The Sisters Grimm books are quick reads, but excellent reads as well.
Such fun!.......2007-08-02
The Grimm sisters, their grandmother Relda, Puck and Mr. Hamstead (one of the Three Little Pigs) are off to New York City! Puck is very sick from his injury at the end of the third book of this series, and the Grimm gang need to find their way into the Faerie kingdom in order to find his fairy family who can help heal Puck. They arrive at their destination, but soon everything is mayhem when a murder occurs, and the Grimm detective sisters Sabrina and Daphne are once more thrown into the search for a criminal. Meanwhile, Sabrina is re-thinking if she even wants to be a fairy-tale detective and live such a wild, dangerous life.
I have only read the third and now fourth of The Sisters Grimm books, but really ought to go back and read the first two. They are such pure, unadulterated fun! Fast-paced, thrilling plots and a unique writing style make them enjoyable for all ages. And since I love anything to do with fairy-tales, reading these books filled with characters and creatures from all sorts of classic tales is nothing short of a blast. If you are a fan of light-hearted mysteries and mixed-up fairy-tales, make sure not to miss this series.
An Okay Read.......2007-07-28
I will admit disappointment up front. After reading the previous books in the series I was looking forward to see what Buckley had in store but in Once Upon A Crime he seems to be running out of some "fairy tale juice." In this edition, the Grimms leave Ferryport to bring their fairy friend Puck to New York City - where the fairy kingdom is located - and have to solve the death of king Oberon. Not a bad idea and a definite Shakespearean influence but very quickly the book seemed to incorporate poor reflections of otherwise good movies. However, on the more positive side Buckley continued to tighten parts of his story line and an interesting split between the stories extends his character development. It's an enjoyable read and I still very much look forward to the next novel in the series.
Delightful story that all ages will enjoy.......2007-07-17
Eleven-year-old Sabrina Grimm and her seven-year-old sister, Daphne, are descendents of the famous Brothers Grimm. The two children have had numerous exciting adventures (that were often dangerous) since coming to live in Ferryport Landing with Granny Relda.
Daphne is thrilled with her status as a fairy-tale detective, but Sabrina just wants to be normal. She finds living in a town with fairy-tale characters filled with danger--and it's just not her `cup of tea.'
But further adventures await Sabrina and Daphne. Puck has been injured and may die if he isn't sent to Faerie to be saved. The two sisters, Granny Relda, her side-kick Canis (the Big Bad Wolf) and Mr. Hamstead travel to Faerie (New York City) to save Puck.
While in New York, Puck's father, Oberon, is murdered and the Grimm sisters must find out who killed him and how much danger Faerie really is in. Along the way they meet Scrooge and Tiny Tim, the seven dwarfs, fairy godfathers, the pirates of Wall Street and of course, the evil Ms. Smirt from child welfare. And the sisters discover a really big secret about their mother, Veronica.
Once Upon a Crime is the fourth book in the Grimm Sisters series by Michael Buckley. It's a delightful story that children, teens and adults will enjoy. I love that Mr. Buckley returned to the sister's home (New York) in this book. It made for an exciting change. But I'm also looking forward to the return to Ferryport Landing. Perhaps in the fifth book?
Armchair Interviews says: The Sister Grimm series is a winner!

Borne from actual questions asked by her own daughters, journalist Maria Shriver's What's Heaven? is a gentle narrative following the conversations that pass between a mother and a young daughter in the days immediately following the death of the child's special great-grandmother. Initially, young Kate's concern is with the obvious change in her mother. Quickly, one question leads to another.
Kate asked, "Mommy, why are you so sad?" Her mom looked at her and said, "My grandma, your great-grandma, has died and gone to Heaven." Kate thought about this for a moment. "Then she asked, "Heaven? What's Heaven?"
Shriver, who was raised Catholic, delivers a simple, traditional definition of Heaven that is rich in imagery but never overembroidered . Heaven, she writes, "is a beautiful place up in the sky, where no one is sick, where no one is mean or unhappy. It's a place beyond the moon, the stars, and the clouds.... Heaven isn't a place you can see.... It's somewhere you believe in." As the funeral approaches and Kate's questions become more pragmatic ("How will she breathe in the box?... Why did Great-grandma look so different?") her mother slowly and clearly introduces the concept of body versus soul, explaining that Great-grandma's best and brightest traits will live on forever in the people she loved. It's hard for Kate to grasp, but by book's end, when she's calling up into the sky to her Great-grandma, it is clear Kate understands. "I know you are up there, and if you can hear me, I want you to know that even though you are no longer here, your spirit will always be alive in me." Generously illustrated with Sandra Speidel's full-size pastel drawings of the characters, the sky, angels, and family photographs, this is a book that can comfortably be read in one sitting. Not that it will only be read once: it's got instant-classic written all over it. (Ages 5 and older) --Jean Lenihan

A special thank you to the author........2007-01-25
In 1999 my husband was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. We received the book from one of our Hospice workers and he read it to his girls (then 7 & 9). This became a very special book for the girls during he last few months of life and for several months after his death. It is probably one of the best explanations of heaven I had heard and I grew up in a very strict Catholic household. Thank you Maria Shriver for this book. I highly recommend it to anyone that has to explain dying to a child.
Very usefull!.......2007-01-13
Found the book usefull in giving direction to parents, grandparents as to how to gently explain the end of this life to a child.
What's Heaven? What a comfort!.......2007-01-09
Well, it's been 7 years since my dad passed away from cancer. My daughter was 3 at the time and we all had a very hard time. This book was given to us by someone at our church. It has sure helped us all, not just my daughter but all of us. Now if we know of anyone who is going through this, we get this book!
Thank you for this wonderful book. We will cherish it forever!
Special thought for a sad time........2006-11-13
I really liked Maria Shriver book, "What's Heaven", I would recommend it for any family that is grieving a loss.
very comforting for my 4 year old.......2006-03-27
This book was very comforting to my 4 year old after the death of her great grandmother. No, it does not go into religious beliefs. Yes, there are some far fetched things in the book like animals being seperated by a white picket fence, but for very young children, the most important thing is that they are comforted and not scared about what happens to a loved one after they die. This book accomplishes that.

It was within the pages of Richard Peck's Newbery Honor-winning A Long Way from Chicago that Mary Alice and Grandma Dowdel first made their captivating debut. Now they're back for more astonishing, laugh-out-loud adventures when fifteen-year-old Mary Alice moves in with her spicy grandmother for the year. Expect moonlit schemes, romances both foiled and founded, and a whole parade of fools made to suffer in unusual (and always hilarious) ways. Ages 9-12. Hardcover - 130 pages

Grandma Dowdel's back! She's just as feisty and terrifying and goodhearted as she was in Richard Peck's A Long Way from Chicago, and every bit as funny. In the first book, a Newbery Honor winner, Grandma's rampages were seen through the eyes of her grandson Joey, who, with his sister, Mary Alice, was sent down from Chicago for a week every summer to visit. But now it's 1937 and Joey has gone off to work for the Civilian Conservation Corps, while 15-year-old Mary Alice has to go stay with Grandma alone--for a whole year, maybe longer. From the very first moment when she arrives at the depot clutching her Philco portable radio and her cat, Bootsie, Mary Alice knows it won't be easy. And it's not. She has to sleep alone in the attic, attend a hick town school where in spite of her worn-out coat she's "the rich girl from Chicago," and be an accomplice in Grandma's outrageous schemes to run the town her own way--and do good while nobody's looking. But being Grandma's sidekick is always interesting, and by the end of the year, Mary Alice has grown to see the formidable love in the heart of her formidable Grandma.
Peck is at his best with these hilarious stories that rest solidly within the American literary tradition of Mark Twain and Bret Harte. Teachers will cherish them as great read-alouds, and older teens will gain historical perspective from this lively picture of the depression years in small-town America. (Ages 12 and older) --Patty Campbell
Customer Reviews:
wonderful story, great performance.......2007-08-31
We loved this story and the reader, Lois Smith, did a fabulous job. Her voice was perfect for the part and the story itself was just charming. Richard Peck is an exceptional author, creating a very believable (fictional) memoir of a girl growing up in Illinois during the depression, told in the first person. The character of Grandma Dowdel is someone you just grow to love, even though at first she seems most unlovable. A wonderful book to listen to as a family.
Book Review of A Year Down Younder.......2007-06-16
This was an exciting and amusing look at a very sad time in the life of many people in America. The recession of 1937 was difficult for the Dowdel family. Times were so hard that the Dowdels could not afford to keep their two children. Mary Alice was sent to live with grandma for a year. Coming from Chicagao to a rural community was quite an adjustment. Grandma made the story captivating since she was such a different sort of person. Much humor was woven into the plot.
A Year Down Yonder.......2007-06-12
When Mary Alice steps off the train from Chicago, she feels likes she's at the end of the world. Rural Louisiana and gruff old Grandma Dowdel are a big change for this fifteen-year-old. The Depression has caused this upheaval in her life, and she must figure out a way to survive the year. It doesn't take long, however, for Mary Alice to start seeing another side of Grandma. Life turns out to be much less drear than Mary Alice imagined as she observes and then joins in on Grandma's witty and poignant escapades to right the wrongs in their community.
Excellent, Excellent Book.......2007-06-12
I'm a gifted student going into my freshmen year and an avid reader, and I have been reading "A Year Down Yonder" and "A Long Way From Chicago" at least three times every summer since I was in fifth grade. I highly reccomend this book to anyone at any age, and it dissapoints me that they lable it as a book for children ages 9 - 12 because I believe anyone can enjoy it.
A Year Down Yonder -.......2007-05-02
I am a 6th grader snd in my class we had to pick a award winning book, i picked A Year Down Yonder. I will tell you a little about the book and maybe you will read this book too.
Mary-Alice is a 15 year old rich girl from Chicago who moved to a small farm town because of the recession in 1937. She is outspoken and well educated. But the real struggle is dealing with her out of the ordinary Grandmother. The book, A Year Down Yonder by Richard Peck tells the story of the pair of mix matched family members learning to understand each other.
This realistic fiction book is about Mary-Alice and her Grandma. Mary Alice has many unexpected adventures with her grandmother throughout the book.
Mary Alice is not accepted by the kids at the small school. She is befriended by a shy local girl, Ina Rae. Although they are very different they become good friends.
Mary Alice shares many interesting situations with her Grandmother and slowly learns to appreciate the quality of life that she can have outside of the city. She eventually marries a local boy named Royce. Do you think she will stay in this hick town or move back to the city?
I think the theme of this book is not to judge a place or person before getting to know it. Mary-Alice started out not liking her Grandmother's small town but in the end enjoyed her life there and met her future husband there too.
I would recommend this book if you like humor.

This Roald Dahl classic tells the scary, funny and imaginative tale of a seven-year-old boy who has a run-in with some real-life witches! "In fairy tales witches always wear silly black hats and black cloaks and they ride on broomsticks. But this is not a fairy tale. This is about REAL WITCHES. REAL WITCHES dress in ordinary clothes and look very much like ordinary women. They live in ordinary houses and they work in ordinary jobs. That is why they are so hard to catch." Witches, as our hero learns, hate children. With the help of a friend and his somewhat-magical grandmother, our hero tries to expose the witches before they dispose of him. Ages 7-12.

Several others have already told you.......2007-08-17
What some PEOPLE do not seem to understand this is a FANTASY book. Its not saying real witches are like this. I went through and read all the 1 star comments and felt like I was going to be sick. I guess these men and women do not understand a book to be FANTASY. "Oh its so horrible it gives a wrong depiction on witches" Yada Yada Yada. Get over yourselves.... ITS A FICTION BOOK!!!!
Funny situations and an amazing plot, Review by EC, age 11.......2007-08-10
The Witches has funny situations and an amazing and adventurous plot. It is about witches that hate children so much that they will work terrifying spells to get rid of them. The main character, a nine-year old boy, and his grandmother must figure out how to destroy the Grand High Witch and all of the other witches. His plan is almost foiled when he is turned into a mouse. Now the challenge is to overcome his difficulty and try his hardest to defeat the witches.

Witches, witches everywhere.......2007-05-22
Roald Dahl is the author of many enchanting books for young readers. Some of his best of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," "Matilda," and "The BFG." Although "The Witches" isn't his best work, it is a fun story about a seven year old boy who finds himself in a hotel full of witches and not jus any witches mind you but witches trying to turn children into mice. To save everyone, the boy has to get stop the witches and get ride of their formula that turns children into mice. A wonderful book to read.
I Got A Spell On You!!!.......2007-04-30
"Run...The witches, their coming." A story about witches riding on brooms and zapping people with wands is what you would expect when you hear a book title like this The Witches by Roald Dahl. But this fiction book Illustrated by Quentin Blake is more interesting. This story is about a seven year old boy who finds himself in a hotel full of witches trying to turn children into mice. He has to get rid of the witches and their formula that turns children into mice. Will this boy be able to escape or will he be turned into a tiny mouse? Can he help save the children and demolish these repugnant witches, or will he fall into the witches trap and become a mouse?
A boy the age of seven is traveling with his grandmother from Norway. He is now traveling to England just to find that he is surrounded by witches. Not the kind of witches with black cloaks, broom sticks, and pointy black hats: these witches dress like normal people, and have real jobs, and wear mask to hide there hideous faces. That's why it's hard to tell them apart from ordinary people. With a friend and his magical grandmother's help, he will go on a mission to try to get rid of these witches before they get rid of him! The most appealing ...part is that the witches are staying in the same hotel as him, and no one knows if he will be able to succeed. The witches have annual witch conventions. The reason I like this book is that it gets you excited; you never know what will happen next unless you keep reading. This book is fun, scary, and dramatic all at the same time and you won't be able to put the book down. I think this because it is like a cat and mouse chase and you think the witches will catch the boy, then the boy just escapes and it is like a fun maze.
This book reminds me of the movie Harry Potter because of the mentioning of witches. This book can teach you about how you should never judge people by how they look or what they wear because they can have a totally different side to them. Do you think he will make it, or not?
I would definitely recommend this book to others because it can be fun for children and adults to read. Once they start reading The Witches, they will never be able to stop. It can teach children to never talk to strangers. This book is for any one that can read, but will be best for children ages of 7 to adults. The Witches is so amazing that it won the Whitbread Children's Book Award in 1983.
The Witches.......2007-02-18
The Witches is a fantasy story by Roald Dahl where this average boy gets turned into a mouse at the annual witch meeting being held at a hotel in England. After the boy's parents died, he travels from Norway to England with his grandmother. The boy meets up with a gang of witches that aren't scary, but they do have a big secret and a very special formula to turn children into mice. The repugnant witches' plan is to buy a candy store to entice children. Children are not the witches' favorite type of people.
The boy and his grandmother want revenge on these witches. This involves some drastic measures that include the hotel kitchen, a humongous pot of soup and some formula. The metamorphosis of the witches will make you want to cheer for the boy and his magnificently brave plan.
I would recommend this book to many other people because it is a great adventure and you won't want to stop reading it. This is a wonderful book to read.

My students loved it.......2007-07-01
I was a little aprehensive at first reading this book to 4th graders, but they absolutely loved it! Before we opened the book, we talked about what genre it might be. We reviewed this prediction after reading a couple chapters. We talked about Fantasy and the elements. I think kids are pretty smart and know that this is not something they should make and give to someone else. We didn't have any problems.
They loved drawing pictures of each step and then summarizing it with a friend. This book allows for great visualizations and even some connections. Kids love mixing things together.
I definitely recommend this book to children 9 years and older. It is really not for lower elementary if you want them to really understand the book.
George's Marvelous Medicine .......2007-06-15
This book is a bout a young boy named George he is home alone with his grandma, because his parents were away. George is a very hipper active child and his grandma is nothing besides a grouch. George's Marvelous Medicine.......2006-11-16
I read the book George's Marvelous Medicine. The book is about a kid named George and he has a grumpy old grandma so he decides to make her a new medicine. So he got a big stew pot to make his grandma a new medicine. He goes around the house to get ingredients anything he could find to put in the pot. He takes the pot back to the kitchen to boil the things. After she had some of it seemed like she was going to blow up. She just kept growing from the medicine and finally her head went through the roof. It looks like the kick of the medicine made her nicer instead of grouchy.
So after I read the book it was awesome. I recommend this book to anyone parents or kids. I think it was one of the best books I ever read.

Thunder Cake.......2007-05-12
This is a wonderful book ! My grandaughter's teacher had the kids read it in class. I made a thunder cake and took it in for the class when they were done. The receipe is in the back of the book. They loved it and it was a lot of fun. Also, a good book for children afraid of thunder storms. I highly recommend it.
Thundercake.......2006-04-23
I Love This Book! I read it to my Toddler daycare class and they were so into this book. It held their attention. Now when they hear thunder they want to make a thundercake.
Thundercake.......2006-01-12
Patricia Polacco did a wonderful job on this book! The illustrations were very helpful to teach the setting of a story. This was also an educational link to teach along with weather. My students loved this book and comprehended it very well because each student was very interested in the story line. I would suggest to any elementary teacher to integrate this book within their literature or science lesson in some sort of way.
Ariella Saltzman.......2005-11-15
I love Patricia Polacco's books, especially this one. I enjoyed this book immensely. She writes about herself as a little girl, visiting her grandmother in Michigan. As a little girl, Polacco was terrified of thunderstorms. In this book, she recalls her times with her grandmother, Babushka. Through her detailed description of her time spent with her Babushka, the reader feels as if he/she is walking along side Polacco as a little girl and her grandmother, right before a storm. The reader is cheering Polacco on, as her grandmother helps her get over her fears of the storm.
Through Polacco's strong vocabulary, she describes the extent of the thunderstorm. She uses words such as bellowed and sultry, which are great words to teach children. Polacco shows the reader a loving relationship between granddaughter and grandmother. Children can relate to both being afraid of something and have a close relationship with a grandmother. This loving book is made even better with Polacco's fun illustrations. The faces of the characters are so detailed, that it is easy for a reader to see how the character is feeling without even reading the words.
I would recommend all of Patricia Polacco's books, but this one is one of my favorites. Many kids are afraid of thunderstorms and this book is a great book to help children overcome their fears of thunder, or any other fear.
Mom's best friend.......2005-11-10
Our daughter was petrified of all loud noises, especially thunder. We found this book and it became her favorite. Every approaching storm she would go get her book. We even made the cake several times. It was delicious! This book helped her thru some very scary stuff and she always smiled when we finished. For parents of thunder-scared children, I highly recommend it.

Book Description
A third installment in this much-talked-about new series of mysteries set in a modern-day fairy-tale community
The sisters Grimm, intrepid detectives of fairy-tale crime, come face to face with their parents' kidnappers, the mysterious organization of Everafters who call themselves The Scarlet Hand. One of them turns out to be the world's most famous fairy-tale character and the other an unstoppable killing-machine known as the Jabberwocky. Without Mr. Canis (aka The Big Bad Wolf) fighting at their side, the girls have little hope that they'll be reunited with their mother and father. That is until their long-lost Uncle Jake returns home with stories of a weapon, now destroyed, that can kill the Jabberwocky. The girls must find the pieces so the deadly blade can be reforged, and in the process butt heads with some of the most powerful Everafters in Ferryport Landing. Will the sisters Grimm save the day?
"Adventure, laughs, and surprises kept me eagerly turning the pages." --R.L Stine, author of the Goosebump series

Another delightful addition to this series.......2007-09-06
(Available in hardcover and paperback)
Sabrina and Daphne Grimm have had several narrow escapes from the evil organization, The Scarlet Hand, that is holding their parents hostage. The girls are hot on the trail of the organization when they meet Uncle Jake (another relative they didn't know they had). It seems Ferryport Landing residents don't remember him either. That's because Granny Relda made sure (with a little help from magic) everyone would forget him after he inadvertently was involved in an insane Little Red Riding Hood escaping from the asylum with a Jabberwocky.
If Sabrina and Daphne are to rescue their parents, they must rely on help from Uncle Jake and even Puck (who drives the girls crazy most of the time). But things get a little muddled when it is discovered that Little Red Riding Hood is bent on recreating her own lost family. That means that Grandma Relda and the family dog, Elvis, are in peril.
The novel is filled with appearances by many favorite fairy-tale characters. Prince Charming and the Queen of Hearts compete in a mayoral election; Snow White is angry with her former love; Canis (The Big Bad Wolf) may have met an unfortunate end; and Rip Van Winkle will make you smile. As for the other cameo appearances, you'll have to read the book to meet them.
And of course, questions are left unanswered for the next installment of The Sisters Grimm. Will Puck get to Faerie in time? Will Sabrina and Daphne's parents wake up from their forced slumber? Who is the head of The Scarlet Hand organization? Will Grandma Relda and Elvis be safe?
The next book will be released December 2007, so the wait won't be too long.
The Sisters Grimm series is a delight. It is in my opinion as good as Harry Potter. It's a fast read and filled with quirky characters and situations that are so much fun.
Armchair Interviews says: Highly recommended.
The Problem Child (The Sisters Grimm Book 3).......2007-07-17
This book was as exciting and then some as the others and I can't wait to read book 4
Review by a 4th grader.......2007-07-14
This is a great, excitement-filled adventure book that everyone should have a chance to read. I liked the ending, the fat cranky Ariel Mermaid, and the many surprises through the book. I DO hope the series ends because I can't wait to find out what will happen next, and the suspense is killing me! :)
Great Read!.......2007-06-30
The third book in the series picks up at the cliff hanger The Unusual Suspect leaves us at. In this book of the series Little Red Riding Hood is a certified loonie and with her "kitten" the Jabberwocky she wreaks havoc on Ferryport. A mysterious and magic using uncle shows up and the girls continue their quest to find their parents. Buckley in some ways has further developed his wit and incorporates an "anti-drug" theme through issues of the eldest Grimm, Sabrina, becoming addicted to magic. As much as I enjoyed this book Buckley has fallen prey to the problems that develop with reintroducing the story: a lot of description is very repetitive and retelling the plot is rather tedious (i.e. Baby Sitter's Club anyone?) and I found myself scanning through much of this. Otherwise, once again I give kudos to Buckley for intertwining fairy tales, folklore, and myths in an engaging way as well as picking certain themes to specifically target children.
Real Page- turner.......2007-05-19
I read this book at a sleepover when my friends began to start a pillow fight. I think the fact that it took me a little less than an hour proves that it's just impossible to put down.
The constant cliff-hangers make it addictive- I was constantly telling myself "I'll stop at the end of this chapter"- After the fifth time I said this, I realized I would just have to read to the end.
Buckley's style of writing reminds me of J.K. Rowling (Harry Potter) and "Lemoney Snicket" (Series of Unfortunate Events). I love how he deals with Sabrina's addiction. That- and Puck and Sabrina's actions. *grins cheekily*
I won't say anything else about the story, but I will mention that it involes a Queen of Hearts and a mermaid that's not so little. There's not as much to think about, unlike the other two. In The Unusual Suspect, you've got lots to think about, but in this one, there isn't much. Still, it's just as good.
6/5 stars, and for anyonee who loves this book as much as me read the authors mentioned above. :)

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Promises!.......2007-06-08
This book does an amazing job of making the connection between a grandmother and her grandchild. It's wonderful to make these promises and have my granddaughter realize that when we do these things that promises are being kept. It's a book to read over and over and over as the grandchildren never tire of hearing the promises made to them.
A treasure.......2007-01-09
Any time a grandparent can pass thoughts and love along in words a treasure is created. I think my sister-in-law will love this book. She has more than one grandchild so it can be kept at Grandma's for both of the little ones or more can be purchased if she wants to personalize them.
Grandmother's Book of Promises.......2006-11-04
This book was perfect when I had my first grandchild. I know my daughter & grandson will treasure it forever.
You should be aware..........2004-12-28
I'm a soon to be parent and I ordered this book for my mother. I either did not read the reviews or the description of the book close enough, and was not aware that the book had religious references. I knew I ordered the wrong book when the first page mentioned "the Lord". Other references included "praising God" with your grandmother and Jesus' birth on Christmas. Don't get me wrong, I'm not putting down this book because of it's religious nature, personally - it's not for me, but people should be aware of its contents.
I'm sure that many people find this a beautiful book and I'm not doubting that, I'm just saying that it may not be suitable for certain families.
A Gem of a Book!.......2004-04-19
This is a wonderful storybook that's a "must have" for Grandmothers everywhere. The illustrations are nice and story is charming. It makes a nice gift for yourself or for any grandparent you know. This book is a true gem! Debbie Farmer, parenting author, 'Don't Put Lipstick on the Cat'

Book Description
Sometimes life can change in an instant
Martha Boyle and Olive Barstow could have been friends, but they weren't. Weeks after a tragic accident, all that is left are eerie connections between the two girls, former classmates who both kept the same secret without knowing it. Now, even while on vacation at the ocean, Martha can't stop thinking about Olive. Things only get more complicated when Martha begins to like Jimmy Manning, a neighbor boy she used to despise. What is going on? Can life for Martha be the same ever again?
Customer Reviews:
KCS olive's ocean.......2007-10-01
Before Martha Boyle leaves for her traditional summer vacation in Providence, Rhode Island, she receives a paper from Olive Barstow's journal. A girl that went to her school and recently died. The impact of knowing someone who died really makes Martha think about the concept of death. Even graver, Martha's beloved grandmother shows signs of aging.
During her vacation on the ocean she gets to know the Mannings, a family of boys who live near her grandmother. While `helping' the oldest, Jimmy, with his video she develops feelings for him. But later discovers his true colors. Martha encounters a lot of life-changing lessons, but I think the one that stood out to me the most was; don't judge people too quickly. Martha didn't really talk to Olive because she seemed like more of an outcast even though was actually nice. Yet she made friends with Jimmy because she thought he was cute. The meaning of the title Olive's Ocean was because part of Olive's journal entry was her hope to one day visit the ocean.
I thought the pacing of this book was good. I really like the author's craft, Martha and her troubles feel so real. Henkes is very descriptive and I really admire his style. I don't think this story was written in a Christian perspective because if it was, Martha wouldn't so afraid of death if she knew there was heaven. I recommend this book to teens or older readers because they can relate to what Martha's going through the most.
He gets it.......2007-09-10
Kevin Henkes certainly understands kids and how they think. That's apparent from his wonderful offerings for young children such as "Owen" and "Julius, Baby of the World". So I was eager to read his literary offering to the YA crowd. I was not disappointed. Poignant and sensitive is his portrayal of Martha Boyle whose summer is changed after a diary entry is given to her by a dead classmate's mother. Strangely she had made an impact on Olive's last year on this earth, even though Martha cannot recall anything she said or did to make this happen. But, this revelation from a girl her age who was so similar to her in so many ways, caused 12-year-old Martha to suddenly view the world in a different light. Much like a person that has been given only a few months to live, Martha takes bold chances, reaches out emotionally to the people who love her, and becomes all the better for it. The writing here just flows, like cool waters running toward the ocean. It is a delightful insight into families, friends, and the people around you, as seen through the eyes of the remarkable Martha Boyle.
Book review for Olive's Ocean by Kevin Henkes.......2007-08-07
Olive's Ocean is an emotional and captivating book that allows the reader to relate to the characters. I enjoyed reading this book especially because it takes unexpected turns and lets the reader feel as if they are inside the book experiencing what the characters are experiencing. My favorite part of the book was when Martha uses the ocean water to write Olive's name on the ground where Olive once sat. My least favorite part was when Martha was told about the bet made between Jimmy and his brothers that ended up hurting and embarrassing Martha. This was very disappointing to me. I would recommend this book to young adults who enjoy reading fiction books that have emotion and romance in them because these things are found in this book. This book does not have very much adventure, suspense, or mystery so I do not recommend this book to readers who look for these characteristics.
A sequel please.......2007-07-13
A story about a sensitive young girl as she ponders life's mysteries while on vacation at her Grandmother's beach house. It was a joy to read, beautifully written, smart, touching and funny. Engaging characters and writing style that wasted not one word. Martha's intelligence and innocence are a breath of fresh air in children's literature. I recommend for ages 11 to 100.
Olive's Ocean Book Review.......2007-06-20
Olive's Ocean is a book that is based on guilt, regrets and mistakes. Martha never knew Olive but after a tragic car accident takes Olive's life, Martha feels extremely sad and guilty about not knowing her better. These feelings deepen when Olive's mother brings Martha a note from Olive's journal saying that Olive's goal was to become Martha's friend. It also included other hopes and dreams of becoming a writer and seeing an ocean. While on a beach trip, Martha learns many important things about herself and how to overcome life problems. She also learns many life lessons. The book takes many twists and turns. In the end Marths finds a way to come to a peace with Olive's death. I enjoyed reading this book. My favorite part was when Marths brings a glass of sea water from the Atlantic ocean in memory of Olive. My least favorite part was when Olive almost drowned. I would recommend this book to my friends, teens and other young adults. Most people would find this book intresting and enjoy it. I don't recommend this book to people who enjoy intense and suspenful books because Olive's Ocean is not a mystery. It is an emotional book.
