mildly confrontational.......2007-01-10
I first read this book 15 years, or so, ago in my doctors office. I searched for months to find a copy for myself, and finally found one in a small bookstore in Solvang, CA. I came across it recently and decided to purchase 3 more copies to give to friends and relatives, if I could FIND 3 copies anywhere. This book is a gem. I was happy to pass it on to others.
Excellent!.......2006-02-25
Many short, powerful and thought provoking statements. Beautiful illustrations. I'd suggest it to anyone.
This book is worth its weight in gold!.......2000-04-27
ILLUMINATIONS is 96 pages of inspired, joyous, loving insights. Each page contains a postage stamp sized abstract illustration accompanying a poetic affirmation which is only one or two sentences in length. This may not seem like much, but I just adore this book for its simple directness! I keep this book near where I work, and give myself a treat by simply opening it to some random page -- it's better than getting a fortune from a fortune cookie! As I do that right now, I read, "It's easier to pretend that you don't know what to do than to do what you need to do. You know what to do."
Wonderful thoughts for meditation and self acceptance........1999-03-30
This little book is chock-full of spiritual reminders and thoughts for meaningful meditations. It is geared toward working on self acceptance in a busy, demanding world. The artwork in it inspires the eye, while the words inspire the soul.
This book changed my life..........1998-03-28
I think I have given away a couple dozen copies of this book to people I care about. On the surface, that may sound a bit obsessive, but with it's simple subtle phrases, it changed my life. It walks you through remembering all the things that most of us desire and wish to have in our lives. The emphasis is on love, kindness, joy, and treating everyone with respect and compassion, most especially ourselves.

Like the medieval illuminated manuscripts that inspire them, the ornate and celebratory creations of Adam Rhine will instill a sense of divine majesty in all who behold Hebrew Illuminations.

Mandala Miracles.......2007-04-29
"Looking at the letters as the expressions of creation can bring us back to the creation, to G-d's dream and vision of the world that was intended to be, to the purpose of creation, and to our own seemingly unlimited potential for human creativity." ~ Rabbi David Zeller
Adam Rhine's beautifully illustrated alphabet originates from ballpoint sketches that turn into warm watercolor expressions that seem to be an ever-changing mandala miracle. His fascination with calligraphy and interest in infusing his work with the energy of color takes his black-and-white pen drawing into new realms. Here he paints and tells the story of each letter. When discussing "Beit" we see a drawing and also read:
"Having a solid foundation, the letter beit represents a house or home. Each of us can be a home for the divine and a source of blessings to the world, making it a true home for the Divine."
As you contemplate each holy letter in this book you can gain a deeper sense of purpose in the way letters are arranged to produce deeper meanings in words.
"Chai, the world for `life,' is spelled with a chet and yud. This combination unites the presence of G-d (represented by the yud) to our existence in time (chet)."
The drawings themselves are alive with meaning and beauty. I love the drawing "Ahava" because two hearts are incorporated into the picture to produce a stained-glass effect. The "Tikkun Olam" painting would be beautiful framed.
~The Rebecca Review
Beautiful Hebrew Calander.......2007-01-22
This calander is extraordinary. Beautiful drawings, vibrant colors, what a gem. I will have to frame some of the photos after the year is gone. They are true treasures!
Judaica calendar.......2007-01-09
This calendar can be used as a work of art-Adam Rhine's artwork is unique and very creative. I highly reccommend it!
A Stupendously Beautiful Book.......2006-11-07
Adam Rhine's Hebrew Illuminations is a stupendously beautiful book. Rhine, a professional artist since 1991 and a member of the American Guild of Judaic Art, has put together a coffee table book of illustrations of both the letters of the Hebrew alphabet and a variety of Stars of David (i.e., 6-pointed or Jewish stars).
From the coloring to the fine graphic detail, these hand-drawn letters andstars unflinchingly reveal the magic that is at the core of Hebrew and Jewish written expression. As Rabbi David Zeller says in the book's forward:
"It is indeed illuminating to see how far the Hebrew letters have traveled around the world and into the cosmos. It is a wonder how they have inspired people of many religions, traditions, cultures, and professions. What is this fascination with these strange shapes - the ancient, timeless, Hebrew letters?... As you contemplate these letters now, go beyond the identified letter and its 'sub-atomic' letter particles. Allow your imagination to soar and take you through the portals of these glyphs to the worlds beyond them....
"This is the nature of the contemplative process: we open ourselves to the stimulus - here, the bold and richly colorful illuminations of the Hebrew alphabet - and our inner being supplies the rest, taking us to previously unimagined universes within. The potential of art rooted in the sacred is to take us on a sacred journey on which we discover our own unique relationship to the source of life."
Each letter occupies its own over-sized page, and facing it is a description of the letter along with commentary written by Rhine. Relevant prayers and sayings, in Hebrew, are also sprinkled throughout the book.
After theletters of the Hebrew alphabet come the Stars of David, and these are truly visionary and breathtaking in both their conception and execution. If you are Jewish, or know someone who is Jewish, or are just interested in things relating to the core of the Western esoteric tradition, then this book is a must-have. I truly feel lucky to have a copy to hold in my hands and to show my friends. Children love the beautiful images as well.
Marvalous.......2006-10-02
Absolutely wonderful. Adam does a great job on the Hebrew aleph-bet. Good, accurate discriptions with the numerical value as well. What I am most enamored with are his Magen Davids. They are beautiful, artistic and classically suited to each season and phase of Jewish life. Good Job Adam!

Book Description
A hope-filled book that reaches into the human heart and encourages the reader to approach painful inner darkness as a help rather than a hindrance for personal growth.
Customer Reviews:
Inspirational and encouraging for those expeiencing depression.......2007-06-02
I ordered an extra coy of this little book. I like having it on hand if I chance to learn a friend
is suffering from post-partum or similar depression. Joyce Rupp writes so personally...you come away feeling
so uplifted.
A book of hope.......2007-01-04
Joyce Rupp knows how to get to the heart of any issue about which she writes. This book helps the reader see how even in the darkest of times, God is present, shedding His light and His presence, whether we are aware of it or not.
I have given this book away many times. It is concise, clear, and filled with hope.
Very perceptive to the human condition; particularly grief!.......2000-01-26
I thought Sr. Rupp's book was very helpful in getting me to face up to what grief was. My sister-in-law recently lost a daughter via murder and I needed to know how to comfort someone in that stage (and also myself and other family members). She has great insight into compassion and tenderness for those suffering this tragedy. The book goes into timely suggestions and great prayers for anyone suffering loss of ANY kind! I truly found this book SUPERB!
Rupp explores the darkness without God and it's normal........1999-05-13
Joyce Rupp has her usual grace when people are in the midst of darkness/depression and feel very far away from God. Rupp explains that this darkness we encounter is normal and can and does bring us closer to God. When we feel the light of God is minimal to non-existent, we somehow manage to hold unto hope to find the long lost joy in our God who is present and embracing is in some manner. Her examples give hope and are accurate to give us hope if we are in the midst of a dark journey. Finding the darkness areas aid us in our relationship with God and to be expected.

Twenty Things I Like about Enumeration: My Book of Lists.......2001-01-11
1) I can tell tell the world "why I am a Superior Being" (for two pages!).
2) I can also "vent" for two pages... and then "move on."
3) I can draw thought balloons for the tie-wearing cat or Yorick's skull.
4) I can celebrate "great days" or whine about things that went wrong.
5) I can grow by doing what I've always been afraid to try.
6) I can count my blessings and set goals to bless others: perform acts of kindness (random and otherwise), send thank-you notes, choose gifts, extend dinner invitations...
7) I can experience new things, like listening to European pop music or tasting Ethiopian cuisine--and maybe find something to add to "my favorite foods."
8) I can be spiritual by recording favorite scriptures.
9) I can make memories with my family "now" or "while I still can."
10) I can brainstorm improvements to my home... and work... and health... and environment.
11) I can log my debts (monetary and otherwise).
12) I can name the pet dragon or the one-horned dinner guest or the hunchback's flying contraption.
13) I can invent my own lists.
14) I can sift the trivial from what really matters.
15) I can doodle for posterity (but mostly for myself) and search for the right word and be surprised by a forgotten memory.
16) I can discover what I want to change about myself...
17) ... and what I want to keep just the way it is--at least for now.
18) I can find out my favorite quotations include things my grandmother used to say.
19) I can fill up one journal and start another.
20) I can recall all these things next year, and the year after that, and the year after that, because I've written them down.

Customer Reviews:
Imagination is beautiful........2007-08-21
Alright. I admit it. Now I'm addicted. It's fabulous once you get going. The Personal Illumination books aren't what I expected. I realized that they were journal books, but I thought it was a journal supplement instead of an actual journal. Basically you plaster anything you want to anywhere in the journal. James C. Christenson helps your ideas get flowing, and from there on it's you. Very fun. I wish though that it was more of a full-blown book. I have tons to say.
Your Creative Journal--The Ultimate Interactivity.......2001-01-09
Add to your "card catalog." That's the premise of the first volume in the "Personal Illuminations" series. Full of words and pictures designed as springboards to the imagination, this little journal delights as it teaches that everyone--not just "artists, writers, and other 'creative' types"--has the potential for creativity. Christensen provides the reader with tools to get more deeply involved in everyday (and not-so-everyday) life.
We may see ourselves in Christensen's fun and thought-provoking illustrations of fish out of water, burdensome attire, impractical mechanisms, and imperfect angels; but then the artist invites us to collaborate with him--to "write, scribble, sketch, paint, draw, scribble, scratch, mark, or paste" on the pages. If we respond to his invitation, we will certainly end up with a unique treasure.
But suggested activities go beyond the pages of the book. He also wants us to travel different roads, ask questions of family members, enjoy nature, observe architecture ("the boxes people come in"), combine the "cards" of our life in new ways, remember loved ones, visit museums, and use our senses (there are six!) to experience what we are, what we have been, and what we might become.
The journals in the "Personal Illuminations" series are books with a mission: to help us discover ourselves and inspire us to participate in our world. As a language teacher, I appreciate Christensen's rich, clear writing and effective use of quotations. Both visually and verbally stimulating, Christensen's books are consistently a worthwhile investment.
Book Description
Illuminations captures the questions of people on paths of faith. It asks how these questions in turn influenced their beliefs--a story the contributors tell in painting, photography, poetry, and short prose. It purposefully excludes descriptions of religious beliefs, rituals, practices, and discussions of their merits, with the understanding that empathy--and eventually peace--is created when we ask questions, rather than take a position and prescribe answers. And it is precisely when we are struggling with doubt and asking ourselves questions about life's joys, crises, and concerns that we open ourselves to deeper discovery.
With 180 contributors from forty-two countries representing diverse cultures, faiths, and spiritual perspectives, Illuminations has more than 100 full-color photos and pieces of art, including pieces by Marianne Williamson, Julia Cameron, award-winning artist Marcus Antonius Jensen, Nobel Laureate Desmond Tutu, and spiritual leaders Dharmachari Maitreyabandhu and ShantiMayi. An enjoyable text, a gift with depth and heart, Illuminations is a quiet book of subtle, colorful splendor.
"Illuminations merges art and spirituality into an elegant and moving collection of profound beauty. This book is a physical blessing to all who are fortunate enough to view it."
--Arielle Ford, founding partner of The Spiritual Cinema Circle
"Illuminations helps the reader move past understanding to empathy, which is the way to peace."
--Jody Williams, 1997 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate
"An important book, Illuminations allows all of us to deepen our connections with one another through the profound questions that live in every faith, every culture, and every heart. This is a book that affirms the inner dependence and interdependence of out time."
--Lynne Twist, author of The Soul of Money

Illuminations.......2007-02-02
A book to slowly taste--word by word. Bask in glorious graphics; savor the thick paper; turn only a page a day to make it last!
The best gift book ever! Give it to your Self........2007-01-10
I gave this book to all my good friends for Christmas. Every one of them, and they are an eclectic group, loves it. This is a book to be savoured like a fine wine. Each time you pick it up, you discover something new and wonderful. I find a favorite poem or photograph or essay or quotation every time I look at it. There are so many jewels here, so much accumulated talent. The editiors, Jennifer McMahon and Mark Tompkins, have truly given all of us who are lucky enough to encounter this book a gift to be treasured for many years. If you haven't been lucky enough to have been given this book, buy one for yourself today. You will love it!
A Gem of a Collection.......2006-12-30
I was delighted and fortunate to discover "Illuminations" through the publication
of one of my poems. It is a gem of a collection, encompassing all faiths and beliefs,
very spiritual and uplifting, filled with beautiful and inspiring pictures, a work of art
in itself. It is at the same time meditation, essay, poetry, and will even spur
your creativity. I was blessed to be part of it and recommend it as an opportunity
for communion with the self.
Helene Cardona, author of The Astonished Universe
Eye Opening and Uplifting.......2006-12-04
This book is a real treasure. It's a wonderful compilation of art and personal stories from people who are looking for greater spiritual meaning in their lives. Rather than preaching, it has people share their experiences from around the globe about their spiritual journey. It reminded me how alike we all are and validated some of my own inner reflections. I highly recommend this book.
A Stunning Collection.......2006-11-28
This is a marvelous collection filled with fresh and original graphics, poetry and prose dealing with struggles and successes along the spiritual path.
Disclosure first, though. I'm one of the contributors with two poems included. I've never been so stunned, however, by a finished product that included my work. The beauty of this book's production, the dozens of fine photos and paintings and the sincere sentiments expressed in the poetry and prose, compelled me to spread the word.
"Illuminations" is a very special book, in which spiritual seekers from around the world portray their struggles, their failures, their discoveries. It is packed with surprises and treasures.

A book of her own.......2001-02-12
Living in Utah, I have become accustomed to seeing James Christensen's art all about me. When I stumbled on this journal, it gave me a chance to combine two of my passions, his art and journal keeping. This hardbound book is just the place to record innermost thoughts. Accompanied, sometimes stimulated, by whimsical illustrations, my thoughts find a home on the pages. The binding is sturdy (but not ungainly looking), and the pages are of good quality paper...very important for a book that gets daily use. A journal to keep and savor.

Small and Deep.......2005-08-16
I've had this little book for a number of years, and everytime I pull it off the shelf I am reminded that important truths do not have to be packaged with fluff. This is a dear, short, helpful pocket companion, that I have a mind to send in the mail to someone who's trying to find their sea legs....The price of a card, but full of help and wisdom.

A delight!.......2001-02-12
I don't know if it is the illustration of the haughty princess on the cover, or the quotes and prompts in this journal that make it my favorite of the four Christensen softcover journals. It is the book that triggered the most personal introspection. The book is filled with whimsey and inspiration and is a delight to keep on hand. This is a must have (or must give)for anyone who loves art and journal keeping.

Gentle and refreshing.......2001-04-08
Discouragement is not a major psychological condition, yet few people would not admit to experiencing it from time to time. In this small volume, counselor and spiritual director Kathleen Fischer discusses several different causes for discouragement, offers both hope and suggestions for resolution, and includes well-chosen Scripture readings or prayers. A deceptively simple and refreshing book, one to return to again and again.
