Book Description

Ever since anonymous spray-can art began appearing on city walls in New York and Philadelphia in the late 1960s, graffiti has been a ubiquitous presence in the urban landscape, its artists largely unsung heroes. As hip-hop culture spread from America, graffiti became a worldwide phenomenon, emerging in the 1980s as the symbolic artistic language of young people everywhere and one of the most potent influences on youth-oriented marketing and design. With more than 2,000 illustrations by over 150 artists from all over the world and interviews with many of them, this visually arresting book is the most comprehensive survey of graffiti art ever published.

Today's young graffiti artists incorporate a variety of mediums-including stickers, stencils, oils, acrylics, and oil-based chalk-as well as an ever-expanding range of social commentary. This evolution in style and subject matter has earned graffiti the respect of the art world and guaranteed its long-lasting influence on art, graphic design, and style around the world. Great fun for graffiti and pop-culture buffs, the book is also an essential reference work for anyone involved in the visual arts today. AUTHOR BIO: Nicholas Ganz (also known as Keinom, his pen name) is a graffiti artist who has traveled around the world to gather material for this book. He lives in Essen, Germany. Tristan Manco is a graphic artist and director of Bristol-based Tijuana Design. He is the author of Stencil Graffiti and Street Logos.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference.......2007-08-06

I'm an art teacher, and I have this book in my room for ninth graders to look at during "down" time. It is so popular that I have had to repair it with book-binding tape after only two years. Many of the students just enjoy looking at the variety of impressive artwork, and some of them enjoy copying the styles of letters to create their own names or phrases. There are hundreds and hundreds of photos from around the world, showcasing a wide variety of styles. I find it hard to believe that someone could not be impressed with the artwork contained in this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good Gift.......2007-07-14

I bought this book for my sister on her birthday and it's awesome... but some of the art in this book is not as spectacular as I thought it would be. The book is very enjoyable regardless.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Concise, Marvelous Photographs.......2007-06-22

I got just what I wanted from this book; a vivid depiction of some of the best works of graffiti in the entire world. I was certainly not disappointed. The art presented here ranges from simple, stark icons plastered in street signs to massive photorealistic portraits on the sides of enormous buildings, and everything in between.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Pictorial Documentary of Street Art.......2007-06-01

Beautiful, glossy images, with many styles and influences...

4 out of 5 stars ohhh.... but I like those slate grey concrete walls.......2007-04-05

To the previous reviewer:

Quote "It just goes to show how brainwashed everybody is into thinking this act of vandalism is an artform"

Of course you are entitled to your opinion, however the sad thing is that you are actually the one who is brainwashed. I guess it is not your fault that years of conditioning have created a closed mind that is unable to appreciate art in forms other than a nice little square canvas hanging on your living room wall.
Try to remove those blinkers once in a while you may be surprised.

peace

OK, as for the book itself.....
Pros: It covers a good spectrum of street art from many countries and is loaded with thousands of photos, making it a great coffee table book. When you open the book and flick through a few of the glossy pages the quality is obvious you really feel like you got your moneys worth.
Pretty good mix of moonlight pieces and the legal stuff.

Cons: The text is pretty minimal and offers only a brief intro to the artists, but I guess most people will be buying this book for the pictures anyway.
I also thought it could have included some larger format pictures considering the page size, pretty minor complaint tho.

Most people will find it a nice gentle intro in to the world of graf art, others a useful reference.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

4 out of 5 stars A good variety of talented women.......2007-03-21

A really good selection of women involved in the graffiti scene, that documents a portion of each of their work well.
Altho their are a few obvious female writers that are missing from this book, like Misery, Diva or Barbara and Eva 62, the book generally covers a good selection of writers and has some awesome coverage of some of their work!
An awesome book highly recommended!

I grew up on the south side of Chicago during the 80s and had many friends who were "taggers" and got up every chance they got. They had spray-cans, hollowed-out deodorant sticks somehow replaced with ink, fat markers, Griffin, and who knows what else. Though I myself wasnt a graffiti artist or writer or tagger, this book is a great ride down memory lane for those of us who grew up on the streets. For those of us of a certain age, this book, "Subway Art", along with movies like Breakin' I AND II, Beat Street, original hip-hop and old school house music were all of a specific time and place. This book will make you want to break out the Pumas with the fat laces, bring out the tile and start back-spinnin', but it is also one of the the earliest, most definitive and detailed books on graffiti ever.

I started doing graff back in the late 90's; I was 14 at the time and to be honest with you; like all great writers we were all toy's at one time but has time went by and we got better with our skills, we all have read this book at one time or another. On with the book review.
This book is just simply AMAZING...you have old school pieces from the Godfather of Graffiti: SEEN, BLADE (which he has painted 5,000 trains during the golden age of the MTA in NYC; since I saw the graffiti scene on the trains at the tender age of six and seven in NYC, I was simply amazed at that age on how people could sneak in at night and do this with spray-paint but I digress), LADY PINK, and the list goes on. If your just starting out in graffit, this is a great book on to connect letters, bubble letter's, block's, and some old school color schemes, though I would not call it the Bible of Graffiti, it is pretty darn close to it. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK CHANGED MY LIFE FOR A WHILE BUT NOW I'M 34.......2006-07-01

Subway Art. What can I say? This, Style Wars, Beat Street, Break Dance... they all had their influence on me (& a whole generation) back in the day.

Hip Hop isn't what it used to be, though. Most of what we hear these days is mixed up with R'n'B, commercialised, repackaged and shipped for your dissatisfaction. If you ask me... when it comes to Hip Hop, stick with the old school.

I was brought up in Melbourne, Australia, and did quite a bit of graffiti there during the 1980s. Melbourne had plenty of weird & wonderful characters who were into graff back then. The vast majority have gone their separate ways. But there's always the rare psycho who's still bombing (I'm not referring to the younger generation - but to old school dudes who are still around). There's also those who got into graphic art and made a career for themselves out of graff.

I recommend checking out some of the original Vaughn Bode cartoons for yourself through a simple Google search.

Additional to this, I recommend Getting Up: Subway Graffitti in New York" by Craig Castleman. It has some pictures of trains and so on, but it is more for the reader. A copy was stolen from a local library near me - go figure.

And if you're ever in NYC... Check out the Hall of Fame. It's located on the corner of 106th Street and Park Avenue.

Book Description

A special two-book set exclusively available to Amazon.com customers: the bestselling book on the fascinating world of graffiti art, and its new companion volume dedicated to the most talented female graffiti artists from around the world.

With more than 2,000 illustrations by over 150 artists from all over the world and interviews with many of them, Graffiti World is the most comprehensive survey of graffiti art ever published. Today's young graffiti artists incorporate a variety of mediums—including stickers, stencils, oils, acrylics, and oil-based chalk—as well as an ever-expanding range of social commentary. This evolution in style and subject matter has earned graffiti the respect of the art world and guaranteed its long-lasting influence on art, graphic design, and style around the world. Great fun for graffiti and pop-culture buffs, the book is also an essential reference work for anyone involved in the visual arts today.

From the author of the enormously successful Graffiti World comes this spectacular follow-up celebrating the contributions of women to contemporary graffiti and street art, Graffiti Women.

Female writers have always been in the forefront of the graffiti movement, though often shunted to the sidelines by their male counterparts. I ordered these books a few months ago and I am bitter to find out how much the price went down. I think these books are worth more. This is such a bargain. It contains great collection of street art. I am proud to have these books in my collection. If you have any interest in street art, don't hesitate to get it- especially at this price! I'm thinking about getting another set so I can give it to friends as gifts.

5 out of 5 stars Two Great Books for One Great Price.......2007-04-28

First of all, the total cost of these books at retail value is $65, and they're being offered together for $20. Any bargain that good is worth a look at the very least. But I would be willing to buy both these books at list price or even higher, and there are many reasons why. Let's start with Graffiti World.
Graffiti World is the most all-around, full-circle comprehensive book on graffiti I have ever laid my eyes on. Every image is bursting with detail and gives clues as to the style of both the region and the artist. Many people have said that it does not cover every artist, and leaves ones completely out from the past, but the fact of the matter is that graffiti evolves at such a rate because of the fact that it is constantly being covered over and taken down. There is less reference the further you look into the past and as a result the art form evolves at an astonishing rate. This is the primary reason that artists from older generations are not mentioned; few of their works remain and to take pictures from another source would just be making someone pay for images they could have obtained otherwise.
There are a few debatable incongruencies with the history of graffiti, such as Ganz implying that it started in New York at the same time as Philadelphia, when it actually started in Philadelphia first and then moved on to New York.
What I love about the book is that it doesn't just showcase the artists, it hand picks the most influential and unique that are known the most throughout the world and shows their specific style and also commonalities in the region in which they produce their art. It also shows people who came from another field into graffiti or people who were into graffiti at one point but are now in a different field of art or design. Most of the readers who flip through this book will recognize some of the names, a few will recognize most of the names, but I doubt there are many who will recognize all of the names, and that's what makes it so great.
Graffiti Women is a vital book in showcasing the talent of graffiti all over the world because moreso than many other forms, the gender divide has created individual styles that are very distinctive. Also, just as with males, specific people have created styles which are like none other, most famously Swoon, who was actually a co-author of the book, and uses the medium of paper in Brooklyn as well as London, Berlin and other areas.
In short, the two books are vital because they look at every aspect of the art form-all mediums, all regions, all artists, abstract artists and even artists that could be classified as minimalistic. It looks at the world of graffiti as a whole and then breaks it down to show how each part became the style it is known for now. It analyzes every artist, every region. It opens up an underground world for the public to see.

5 out of 5 stars Open the door.......2007-02-11

I was always interested in street art but had only really been exposed to a small amount of it. These books gave me path into this world. Upon deciding to buy these books I was concerned that it would be an annual of the same bombing you might see fresh on the side of the train tracks, however I was pleasantly surprised to find that It depicted a vast array of work with theme of the medium not just the style.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Inspiring.......2007-01-19

This is the new face of street art and in particular the new face of a growing movement among female street artists. This book will inspire you and also give you a new perspective on graffiti, street art, and art in general. If you have teenagers, this is a great way to show them that art does not have to be in a gallery to touch it's viewers. These books are truly inspiring and provacative.

Book Description

In Soul Graffiti   Mark Scandrette—writer, poet, and leader in the Emergent church movement—uses vivid stories of his own life and the lives of the many people he has encountered in his home in the Mission District of San Francisco to explore what “good news of God” might mean for our particular time and place. He seeks to answer the central question:

“How can we be about making a life in the way of Jesus?” Soul Graffiti is a simple and lyrical exploration of the essential message of Jesus as it relates to the experiences of contemporary spiritual seekers. He integrates theological insight with awareness of human psychology, culture, and daily life. Written to appeal to the sensibilities of those who inhabit a post-Christendom milieu, Mark Scandrette’s deepest hope is to give readers greater motivation for, and a fuller sense of what it means to make a life in, the way of Jesus.

5 out of 5 stars A practical and thought-provoking book........2007-09-17

Mark's book is both practical and entertaining. His stories ground the ideas of God's Kingdom in real terms and show the adventure of a life lived in pursuit of God's heart for people. I've done a quick read-through, but I expect to go through the book again more slowly--with other people, I hope-- taking time to process his suggested topics for discussion and to implement his experiments in Kingdom living.

5 out of 5 stars Soul Graffiti is a gentle book, one that I was sad to finish........2007-07-06

There is a word that you rarely hear nowadays - gentle. Our times seem to call out people & things that are bold, that are fierce, that can do things that get noticed. You can see this fierce world raging in urban streets, in popular media and (sadly) in many communities of faith.

Mark Scandrette is gentle - in a way that pulls people into his story and in the process a much bigger story. FMark, his wife Lisa and their kids Hailey, Noah or Isaiah live in the Mission District of San Francisco. To say they live there is not enough - they inhale all that this area has to offer, they are colorful portraits in the multi-color mural that is constantly being painted in the Mission. Mark has helped foster seven, a community of people, living in SF, aiming to "collaborate with the Creator in bringing about greater wholeness and love into the world". As a community they have committed to 7 vows: Creativity, Prayer, Community, Service, Obedience, Simplicity and Love.

Of Mark's many gifts, hospitality is a strong strand. His life/work seems like one grand, floating party - shifting from locale to locale, with celebrants weaving in and out. In the hospitality that the Scandrettes embody, drag queens sip red wine with Fuller grads, gallery owners bunk up in the small but warm Scandrette living room with recovering pastors. In the '30s & '40s in NYC, they'd call these floating crap games: dice games which is moved from place to place to evade the authorities. Mark uses art & conversation, rather than dice, but the vibe is the same: if this is not what heaven is like, it will do until we get there.

For me, much of the emerging church phenomenon fits a bus terminal metaphor - a passing point where all types of people wait for their next connection, finding safety & solace from fellow travellers. Some times the bus terminal is noisy & chaotic, other times it is as quiet as a convent. In my experience of this phenomenon, Mark mans the Traveller's Aid table, with his lovable grin & hipster hat or hair do. The table is usually a card table that Mark found discarded some where on Valencia, there are scraps of food from meals in progress, music and art scattered all about.

Images Mark wrote Soul Graffiti from his experiences at that rickety old table. It is brimming with stories of people who float in and out of life. It's rare that someone can capture their essence in a book - even more rare when at the end of 272 pages, you find that you've fallen deeper in love with that person, more in love with the you you've re-discovered, even more in love with God & Jesus and (even) church.

Soul Graffiti is a gentle book, one that I was sad to finish. Mark Scandrette is a gentle presence in my life & thousands of other folks - I can't wait for next walk we have & the next chapters he writes.

5 out of 5 stars Amen.......2007-06-18

Emergent folks often talk about following Jesus or living in the way of Jesus, but rarely is this phrase followed by story after story of a life in process of Christo-transformation. If you want to hear some of these stories and be challenged by them then go get Mark Scandrette's new book `Soul Graffiti.' The book is organized into four parts that follow the initial teaching of Jesus in gospel of Mark and the though Scandrette does occasionally give direct theological reflection, the book itself is story driven and oh so compelling. When you get done you will either be fired up that someone in the First World is actually identifiably Christian, which gives you hope for yourself or be irritated that you read a book that ended up challenging you to the core. Or both. Scandrette is a luring story-teller which enables his family and community in San Fran to untame Jesus and the gospel for the reader. He mentions taking the risk of being offended by Jesus and his teachings and his stories reveal to us just how offended we need to get, but also how rewarding a life on the way of Jesus can be. If you want to be encouraged, challenged, and have a stack of super sweet stories to bring up next time some one asks what following Jesus looks like the get it, read it, and do it.

5 out of 5 stars Making a life in the way.......2007-05-30

I was with some friends this weekend who were inspired by the The Shaping of Things to Come by Michael Frost and Alan Hirsch. They are longing for concrete examples of people who are living out the journey of apprenticeship to Jesus in a holistic way. They have been draw to many writers in the emerging church but have struggled to find the place where the ideas meet the practicality of their own lives. Mark's book is filled with stores and examples that are engaging and inspiring. I think this is the book that will help them take their next step.

5 out of 5 stars "Soul Graffiti", a curious poem of hope.......2007-05-23

who should read this book? nobody. nobody should need to. we should all be cooking grand meals for our friends and discussing the implications of one thing or another, only to wake up the next morning and engage in some frighteningly intimate and dangerous acts of humanity and justice. then to dance, then to weep, then to walk, then to sit on the front porch and wait for the next story to come by and see if it is a story for us to listen to, or a story we are to make come true.

but we don't really do those things, do we. i think maybe this book shows a way, a glimpse, of courage, hope, of light. they are in there, in the stories and in the life mark is reaching for. it's not a textbook, everything mark does and writes about is so deeply contextual that it is immediately obvious that living even 2 miles from mark would result in a radically different set of stories. but it is more like a poem, which is true when it is written, and true in a different way as it is read.

As dazzling as the art it celebrates, the book is packed with 1,000 full-color illustrations and features in-depth interviews with more than 125 train artists and "writers." Hundreds of never-before-seen photographs span the style's evolution, while the authoritative text from an all-star team of authors provides unprecedented perspective, including the first-ever written history of "monikers," the precursors of graffiti, developed by hobos and rail workers to communicate en route. Bound to surprise graffiti artists, graphic designers, and urban culture buffs alike, this book will inspire anyone who has ever been interested in graffiti.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars More traditional than one might think.......2007-08-17

The subject is well researched, although rail cars are not totally unique to graffiti, which seems to be a human tradition since the first caveman scratched out the image of a beast on the wall of his cave. History buffs study graffiti along the Oregon Trail in places like Independence Rock in Wyoming. Graffiti is personification. What I find amazing is that so many "artist" have so much time, and resources to supply great quantities of paint to do this illegal form of art. Obviously several hours go into one masterpiece at some point, would expect detection by authorities. I have a little difficulty with the smallness of the writing. Otherwise, I find it interesting

4 out of 5 stars if you like freights, this is the book for you.......2007-07-29

look at who it was done by,that should be enuff to tell you its dope, with out the hundreds of tiop shelf photos,in this book waiting for you to drewl over,a excellent book, the only reason why i didnt give it 5 strats is gets a bit to much of the same thing towards the end,but being such a thick book,it will have you hooked for a while...

1 out of 5 stars It's Not even worth $5.99----.......2007-05-30

First off----this book is too small (size-wise) and has far too many pages.
The author would have been better off making the book bigger and cutting alot of the boring filler stuff about trains. Some of the pictures are so small it is difficult to even read the pieces.
The page layout is crammed and rather amateur looking.
Most of the train info makes for a boring read, but that is what happens when a Non - artist writes a book about art.
Train graffiti is not even that interesting to look at- most of it is basic and quick.
The Cover shot is such a basic piece, unimpressive at best---
A few of the top to bottoms look really nice, but are crammed into small pages because the book is so tiny.....
If the price gets down to $1.99, buy it and cut the pictures out, scan them, enlarge them and then make your own picture book. You will finally be able to see the detail and it will probably be a better layout........hahahaha

4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-05-17

I feel like this product is pretty self-explanatory. If you want a high-quality book including lots of great pictures and funny, personal first-person accounts, then this is the book for you. If not, then I really don't know why you'd want a book entitle Freight Train Graffiti. Delivers exactly as expected!

5 out of 5 stars train writing 101.......2007-02-18

this book is amazing! it goes from the history of the railroad, to the hobo era, to the roots of tagging, to modern day enhanced writings that are beautiful! the accounts from real train writers are enlightening and entertaining. i would recommend this book to anyone who wants a diversified coffee table book, or someone that wants to learn more about this art. and, yes, it IS art. YOU try to use spray paint as a medium, its not that easy.

Book Description

This book is the most extensive contribution to our understanding of the graffiti subculture to date. Using insights from ethnographic research conducted in London and New York, this book explores the varying ways young men use graffiti to construct masculinity, claim power, and establish independence from the institutions which define, and often limit, them as young people. Forging a link between subcultural practice and identity construction, this book will be essential reading for anyone interested in new understandings of youth and their subcultures.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Review of Graffiti Subculture.......2005-04-13

Allow me to be the first voice of dissent--while this is a thoroughly researched ethnography, the analysis was myopic and simply not intensive enough. My primary disapointment in this book was the author's failure to account for graffiti itself--as a language, as text, as communication. So little has been written on this subject, but Mcdonald spends only the smallest amount of time discussing the way that graffiti "performs". Of course, you say, she is a sociologist, and this is a subcultural study. But Mcdonald spends a great deal of this book focusing on masculine/feminine identity and graffiti art as a way to "perform" masculinity or femininity, through exclusion and inclusion. Graffiti is contextualized as an expression of anomie and disenfranchisement, and the illegal nature is brought to the forefront. But this could easily have been a book about gang members in London, as very little in this book would have been different. So much can be written about the way urban youth mediate themselves, and why. This book just does not account for communication and, in focusing on its subjects, neglects the very interfaces and connections that allow them to communicate and differentiate. Finally, the greatest weakness of this book is that it makes NO attempt to historicize graffiti. It's as if graffiti first appeared in the 80's out of a cultural vacuum. Without any sort of historical context, the hobby discussed in this volume means very, very little. Like other dissertations written for public consumption, the book spends a great deal of time recounting the history of 20th century criticism, which will make you tap your foot and roll your eyes if you've heard all of this before. I enjoy the approach--ethnography is a very important methodology, first person narration and personal anecdotes are too often absent from academic work (but becoming more popular in recent years)and the author's insistence that her subjects review and revise her work in the footnotes is very endearing, and perhaps revolutionary. I just wish that this book had actually discussed graffiti--how do we understand subjects without understanding their symbolic order?

5 out of 5 stars First-rate exploration of the world of the graffiti writer.......2004-12-11

I couldn't recommend this book more highly to anybody with a serious interest in the lives and values of graffiti writers. The book is undeniably scholarly in tone, but is written in a clear and lucid manner which makes it accessible to anybody with an interest in the subject. Furthermore, Macdonald's effective discussion of her methodologies and the assumptions underlying her work make the book invaluable for anybody who wishes to look at a variety of subcultures, not just graffiti.

Even if you don't believe the blurb (or this review), believe the pages of glowing appraisals from graffiti writers that fill the back of the book. This is, in itself, a considerable achievment, and testifies to the high regard in which Macdonald's work is held by her subjects. If more writers bothered to check their work with the people they write about, this type of book would be held in higher regard outside the world of academia.

5 out of 5 stars amazing insight.......2001-07-26

I myself have conducted extensive research on the subject and have found Nancy's book to be the most comprehensive study to date on the graffiti subculture. How a researcher can get so close to the essense of a very difficult subculture to penetrate is beyond me. An immensely interesting read, and a resource for study into any youth subcultural activity.

5 out of 5 stars WRITING ON WRITING.......2001-07-25

THOUGHTS:

At last! A sensible rational book on the graffiti sub-culture. This book presents established sociological schools of thought uniquely re-interpreted in a reader-friendly down to earth methodology. Should be compulsary reading for any student of Culture or Sociology, or indeed anyone with an interest in this controversial artform.I think it would be enlightening reading for those who continue to make political mileage about the deviance of graffiti , and force them to examine the roots and different branches of the sub-culture. I only wish I'd owned it at the beginning of my degree course but will be fully utilising it in my last year of essays. It is rare to read a book which balances academic strength with such clarity on the little studied role of female participants of sub-cultures.

5 out of 5 stars Unique and compelling.......2001-07-25

Taking a different approach to the graffiti subject is not something I would usually recommend - most authors that have tried to write about graf and the surrounding culture produce forgettable books often ridiculed by graf writers. And if you don't appeal to the people you're writing about, where's the decency in that? Nancy Macdonald has totally blown any preconceptions you might have about her approach to this subject - she looks at the culture from the perspective of an outsider looking in, but successfully involves the people she is writing about. Genuine quotes from writers (not just any writers, but respected and admired writers) prove that Macdonald carried out the necessary research to write an incredible book on the ideas and psychology behind graffiti. Although the content is generally text, the selection of photos are well chosen and effective at backing up the writing.

To cap off an already-essential book, Macdonald had the courtesy to hand the book back to the writers who contributed and helped. Their comments (in the back of the book) only enforce that this book is accurate and genuine - and for that alone, Macdonald should be applauded.

For anyone interested in graffiti - whether it's reading quotes about yard missions, or wanting to know the reasons behind why people write on trains and walls - this book is vital reading.

LA finally has a voice immortalized in print. After 20+ years of bombing, tagging, running, gunning and stunning, Los Angeles is beginning to see its history actually recorded. This first effort by a pair of LA sons -- including none other than the notorious WISKone from WCA -- is an ambitious and thorough first effort. Sure there are typos and some people will critique the inclusion or exclusion of a few heads, but come on . . . this is a bold and brave undertaking. The book is massive, full of colorful pieces you might not even remember even if you saw them the first time around. and instead of inserted narrative and opinions, it's a first person verbatim of memories from the artists that lived the life during the first wave (1983-1988). Artists, murals, writers and yards have come and gone, so this archive will fast become an essential part of our history. And thank god somebody had the balls and the commitment to finally do it.
