A popular book over sixty years ago, it is now being reissued with original illustrations. A serious book about decorating that does not take itself too seriously.
Customer Reviews:
A focus on how to have a good time decorating .......2007-02-28
This isn't another book about the history of decorating nor even how to design an interior, but a focus on how to have a good time decorating - which sets DECORATING IS FUN! HOW TO BE YOUR OWN DECORATOR apart as much today as when it originally appeared in 1939 on the even of the second world war. The title's been out of print for over sixty years and is reissued here with its original illustrations, making for a serious and informative title any serious home decoration library needs.

Amazon.com
This is not simply a useful and informative book about the innumerable uses for good old baking soda, saving tons of money, and in the process not harming the environment. It is also entertaining and sometimes downright funny--it would be a great gift for anyone, including yourself. I expect that Vicki Lansky had a blast putting this book together, and her enthusiasm is evident in the text.

Fun!.......2007-09-10
Definitely an entertaining book, though I was actually pretty amazed what that awful-flavored powder will do! My bathrooms have never been so sparkly clean.
Great stocking stuffer sort of book. Fun for the relatives/friends that have everything.
Infinite Uses for Baking Soda.......2007-04-04
Who needs a million different products for laundry, gardening, cooking, or pet care? All you need is baking soda.
Good things come in small books..........2007-03-08
Some info is repeated from the vinegar book. Good tips, would recommend.
So much Baking Soda, so little time!.......2007-01-11
This is a great little book, full of environmentally nifty little tips. It's handy to leave on the kitchen book shelf. Timely shipping.
Home Product Pre-Pleasantville.......2007-01-10
Remember when Arm & Hammer was high on our grocery list?
Down memory lane with all the old household advise for using Baking Soda in cooking, laundry, gardening, dental care, grooming, pet care and a few new ones, for use in our vehicle, while camping, and as play projects. I'm reminded again, there really is no need to spend so many dollars on oil based products with 'grab me' names and colorful packaging. Just keeping on hand Baking Soda, vinegar, ammonia, lemon juice, peroxide and clorax - can do it all.
The book is well laid out with a cartoon on the first page of each section. Easy to read big print, lots of bullets, a dark font heading for each area of tips... Tips from making your own low acid coffee to, making dirty windows sparkle or, clean your suade skirt.
This is one book I wish each chapter included a pull-out laminated chart that I could slip into places like the laundry, medicine cabinet or kitchen drawer.
Book Description
The timeless and collectible classic on entertaining-at last back in print!
Dorothy Draper (1889-1969), like her contemporaries Diana Vreeland and Elsie de Wolfe, became an icon of stylish living through her interior decorating and many books.
Originally published in 1941, Entertaining Is Fun! is one of Draper's most delightful creations, hailed in the original flap copy of the book as "neither a cookbook nor a book of etiquette, but a vivacious and inspiring book on home entertaining." With its charming retro package, this book teaches you how to host the most fabulous dinner parties, holiday meals, and weddings, and also makes a great gift!
Customer Reviews:
Entertaining is Fun!: How to Be a Popular Hostess.......2007-06-08
What a wonderful book. I enjoy looking at it again and again. Great ideas from years ago that can still be used today!
Entertaining is Fun!.......2006-11-02
Dorothy Draper was known for her sense of style in both decorating and entertaining. Although this book was written in the mid-1900s the entertaining suggestions are timeless. The book itself is fun with its typical 1950s illustrations and speech. This is a book that is fun to use to while away an afternoon.
Charming!.......2005-11-09
This book is wonderful. I just love Draper's tone and conversational way of writing. She offers ideas for all budgets and lifestyles. Charmingly retro, with plenty of good advice for today's hostesses. I could not put it down.
THE housewarming gift for gay men.......2005-05-01
Not as important or famous as Draper's "Decorating is Fun," but her 1941 "Entertaining" book is still amusing, deserving a spot on your coffee table next to an old 1940s Emily Post Etiquette book (when is somone gonna get wise and issue reprints of THOSE?).
Among the highlights is a full list of what every well-appointed home cannot do without, just in case an unexpected guest drops by ("a charming tea set," "a good hall mirror," and "a big metal bell with a lovely tone, to call people in from the garden for games or meals..."), and how to throw a dinner party--1940s style.
Fascinating book. In no time you'll be providing crisp stationery, fresh flowers, 700-thread-count sheets and a luggage stand for your weekend guests...and really, aren't those the "family values" that matter most?
A fun & inspirational read.......2004-11-08
If you're looking for some new ideas, as well as a peek into entertaining during the 1940's, you'll find a lot to enjoy in this reprint of Dorothy Draper's charming guide to entertaining. With an emphasis on simple, unpretentious planning, I think it was quite ahead of its time. This might make a good hostess gift!

Freaky-looking clowns, yikes.......2005-10-05
I just had to say that when I read the other review that said the clowns in here were too scary looking, I chuckled-- until I took a look at the book myself and saw them! Today I was in B&N and saw this book, and I must say those freaky clowns on each page ruin this book. I love these I Spy books, but although I don't get scared by clowns, I do wish they chose a set of cute little clowns instead. Try the Spooky House I Spy book-- so cute and fun!!
Not for me!.......2005-01-08
For those people acquainted with I Spy books, you know that there is one item that appears on each picture page. Unfortunately, in the Fun House book, the recurring item is a pair of clown-dolls. Call me crazy, but those clowns are downright freaky and they frightened me! They are peering out at you from all sorts of the places and they gave me the creeps. I had intended to give this book as a gift to my 8-year-old son, but couldn't follow through. I just couldn't handle those clowns and didn't know how my kids would react. Again, maybe it's just me, but I can't recommend this book. Sorry if you think I'm a wimp, but if there are others like me, I wouldn't buy this book for your kids.
I recommend I Spy Fantasy and I Spy School Days.
Thanks.

Book Description
Decorating with Funky Shui encourages you to dig out all those wild and crazy pieces you've been hiding. So c'mon, gather up all those snow globes and let the disco ball sparkle in your living room. Let your rooms tell people who you really are-if you dare.Your home should be a reflection of your own personality, not a hodgepodge of mass-produced whatnots from a "big-box" chain retail store. Inspired by the popular Chinese art of feng shui, this lighthearted book takes you through the "Fun-damentals," the four directions to make your house yours, all yours: Find the playful center of the room: It can be a random garage-sale treasure, that cool mannequin you didn't think you could find a place for, or the tarnished tuba you inherited from Grandpa. That one goofy, unusual, or chic conversation piece can become the star of your room. Brighten up with color: Not everything has to match your boring beige sofa. Rooms without color lack flavor. Enlighten up: Fun, dynamic lighting can brighten a room in more ways than one. Candles add coziness; Christmas lights sparkle year-round. A string of hot-pepper lights can spice up a cool room. Abundance through abundance: The souvenirs you pick up during road trips. Your collection of vintage milk-bottle caps. All the Pez dispensers you can't bear to part with. If you've got 'em, flaunt 'em. Artfully display your collections-whatever they may be-to show them off.Decorating with Funky Shui encourages you to stretch your imagination to find a style that's uniquely you.
Customer Reviews:
Screw Feng Shui!.......2006-07-07
Are you tired of all those decorating books (and shows) that insist we must rid ourselves of all our treasured items that we've spent so much time collecting? I know I am. I've tried the whole feng shui thing and it just doesn't fit my personality. I'm through trying to fit the mold of some organized, bland, neat freak. It's just not going to happen. This is a lighthearted book with some really great photos. It's not meant to be a "real" decorating book, I think. It just reminds us to have fun with our beloved stuff. Lots of wide open space might be great for energy flow, but for some people, like me, the emptiness just leaves a cold feeling. If you feel the same way, then this is the book for you.
Funky, yes -- practical, no.......2004-11-17
Decorating with Funky Shui is a fun book, no doubt. It's fun to read and look at, and I was thoroughly entertained by the kitsch and the collectibles. But I have to say that beyond the few good ideas in the book, it's not a very practical decorating strategy for families with babies, small children, or rambunctious pets.
I love the idea that you can decorate with stuff you accumulate and can't toss out, but I can't see myself collecting so much stuff in clusters and having to dust my decor. Imagine the intricate work involved! And with pets, forget it.
In theory a great, fun book. In reality, only if you're single or not sharing a space and have the patience to clean all these objects and spaces.
funny as heck!.......2004-08-14
This book should be featured in the Humor section as well as the Home Decor section - it's that funny. A wonderful blend of wit and vision - beautiful to look at, and with chuckles on every page. Great to keep around on your coffee table for guests to browse, or to give as gifts to friends who always have a lot of stuff around. A must!
Decorating with Funky Shui.......2004-07-27
The antidote to unhappiness-Decorating with Funky Shui.
This is a jewel of a book, as beautiful as it is funny. I love all the tongue in cheek tips. For your bedroom: "A single white rose bud in a glass vase represents chastity--so you don't have to." It's a humorous look at making your house a home that really represents who you are and how you like to live. Since reading it I've taken out several of my collections that were under the bed and in the closet (like Kitty & Jennifer recommend) and displayed them as beautiful objets d'art in my home. I'm feeling better already--and I bet I'll be happier this year just because I can find stuff. If you know a friend who needs more fun and less work or has clutter instead of collections (don't we all) buy this book for them today. Highly recommended!
Heavily invested in fun.......2004-07-22
I loved this book! It is well written, fun and funny to read. I was happy to have suggestions for what to do with my extensive "lady bug" collectibles. Now I have them prominently displayed in a variety of areas throughout the house. I love the idea of not following traditional decorating rules. The pictures were great - colorful and creative! I especially enjoyed the "have a nice day" photos. The cookie jar reminded me of the exact one from my Mother's kitchen. Keep writing ladies!

Customer Reviews:
Very nice detailed pictures, but this is NOT a how to book.......2006-10-05
When I ordered this book I thought it was going to show me some home theatre and home rec rooms and go into some details in how the rooms were created and put together. Instead it is really a coffee table picture book and NOT what the description above says.
I quote:
"Rooms for Fun contains everything consumers need to know to renovate or convert unused space -- whether it's the garage, the basement, or an extra bedroom -- into a room devoted to enjoyment and tailored to their individual tastes and interests. Full-color photographs will inspire, detailed layouts will aid in construction and decoration, and an extensive resource section will help locate manufacturers."
The big blooper is right in the first line. "Everything consumers need to know". Need to know usually implies SOME kind of instruction. I am sorry, but there are NO instructions here whatsoever. There is a small one paragraph blurb that just describes the room. That is it.
In terms of the book itself the pictures are great and it could be a good source of inspiration and it is a really good coffee table book for the home entertainement enthusiast. But due to the poor description above, I was lead to believe it was one thing, when in fact it was another.
At first I was just going to add the book to my coffee table book collection, but then again, I already have plenty books for that purpose. And what I was looking for is a DIY instruction book. So it is going back to Amazon.
Note to Amazon: Sorry guys, but after countless orders and being satisfied with each and every one (mainly due to your superb descriptions), I am a bit surprised at this description and this is the first time I had to return something to you. The description above looks like it was written without someone actually opening and looking into the book. Ok, I will give the benefit of the doubt if you lifted the description from the publisher, then you have my apologies, but for the sake of your future customers and to prevent this from happening again, the description HAS to be changed.
Thank You.

Customer Reviews:
Boredom buster.......2007-03-09
I really enjoyed this book and it's what I turn to whenever I'm having a "blah" moment. The drawings are easy to follow, the writing is short and brief and there are tons of little extras throughout the book (stickers, punch outs, etc). It's more of an activity book than a drawing book and even if you have no interest in drawing, you'll enjoy the wit and whimsy of the words and illustrations. A great buy at the original price, but a fabulous bargin at anything less!
I can guarantee that this fun book can drive your imagination engine into hyper-speed mode!.......2006-10-19
How to Draw a Radish: And Other Fun Things to Do at Work
How to Draw a Cup of Coffee and Other Fun Ideas for Home & Garden
How to Draw a Clam: A Wonderful Vacation Planner
All three books, by Joy Sikorski
I have owned these three wonderful books since the late nineties & have re-visited them many times.
In the field of what I would like to term as 'deliberate doodling', I consider these three books to be the best in the genre. Unlike the common doodles, which seem whimsical, 'deliberate doodling' involves some form of structure & purpose. I am very impressed by what the author has done in the three fun books of hers.
All three fun books are spiral bound, each with almost two hundred pages of inspirational doodling techniques, on top of various other discovery games & paper crafts for professional & personal entertainment. Each is sturdily constructed with two pockets for special projects, organised with ten card-board dividers & yet small enough to fit into your briefcase.
From my personal perspective, they are wonderful toys for grow-ups: playful, instructive & absolutely worthwhile!
The author has actually written another similar book, entitled 'Squeaky Chalk : And Other Fun Things to Draw (And Do) When There's Nothing to Do!' but for some strange reasons, I did not lay my hands on it.
For the benefit of readers, let me share this personal experience of mine: I have combined the 'deliberate doodling' techniques from Joy with the 'rapid viz' techniques from Kurt Hanks, & integrated them into the 'private writing' processes as formulated by Mark Levy in his wonderful book, 'Accidental Genius: Revolutionize Your Thinking Through Private Writing .'
I use what I often like to term as my 'scratch pad', the type artists use, foolscape size, spiral-bound, 100 pages per pad, 100 gms weight, in conjuction with a multi-colour/multi-utility pen from Rotring. At one point in time, (for about 3 years) I used the Bienfang spring-bound note/sketch pads until the only local supplier went out of business unexpectedly.
On many occasions, I have astonished myself by being able to wrestle with the valuable business & life insights from my own seemingly disparate "private writing"/'deliberate doodling'/'rapid viz' pages. The doodles & illustrations often add a perceptive visual dimension to my seemingly random thoughts on paper. My scratch pad is always a visual smorgasbord of relatively heavy text, mystical doodles & logical illustrations (thanks & no thanks to my engineering training!). I have translated many of my valuable insights into pragmatic projects. One of the sideline projects is writing reviews on amazon website.
To all readers: If you really want to use both sides of your powerful brain to generate valuable insights, I can guarantee that these three books can drive your imagination engine into hyper-speed mode.
Delightful surrealist romp.......2006-05-15
I simply love this little book. I found it on clearance and thought "Hey, what can it hurt?" It didn't hurt at all, obviously. I love the whimsical flow and little extras like the herb labels and "postcards." It's also very informative, teaching you how to doodle things like cups of coffee, mice and peanuts, and the ever-honorable peccary. This would make an excellent gift for those who like a little silliness in their everyday life.
A delightful and quick read.......2006-03-09
A delightfully silly and surreal book. I enjoyed the drawing lessons most.
A wonderful book.......2000-07-31
If you are looking for a fun gift look no further! this book is an exellent peice of work from people of all ages! It is fun and creative and never boring! Read it and give it a try!
