Book Description
Fetishes are carvings believed to have a spirit within, which can help the owner if used properly and respectfully. They may be used for hunting, the diagnosis and cure of disease, initiations, war, gambling, propagation, spells, and good fortune and usually bear the resemblance of an animal. Frank Hamilton Cushing's classic book is incorporated in this expanded 9" x 12" version, annotated by Mark Bahti, who provides supplemental text on Zuni life and art. Full-color photographs show modern fetish art by the Zunis, with commentary explaining the cultural significance of the works.

Wonderful Primer in Zuni Fetishes.......2002-10-24
Expanding upon early impressions of Zuni fetishes, this book contrasts the reprinted text the Second Annual Report of the Bureau of Ethnology (published in 188), with annotations by noted art historian and author Mark Bahti.
Book Description
These tiny, exquisite "charm stones" make up some of the most popularand most collectedNative American art in the country. Zuni Fetishes and Carvings offers the most complete guide to these appealing objects on the market today.
How can fetishes help us in our daily lives? What does the bear represent? The frog? The eagle? What powers do they contain? In this deluxe, newly combined and updated volume, noted Indian trader Kent McManis explains the different types of fetishes with special emphasis on the two major traditional groups: the protective/healing group and the hunting group. He describes the many materials that Zuni artists work with today and introduces many skilled carvers, from those who have worked in this field for many years to relative newcomers. With over 160 photos of fetishes in full color and newly updated family trees for the carvers, this volume comprises the best general reference on the subject ever available for collectors.

Almost Complete.......2007-07-06
Contains a great deal of information about the Zuni carvers and their carvings, but does not get quite far enough.
excellent book with LOTS of photos by knowledgable author.......2005-09-09
Zuni fetish carvings are fascinating and addicting. This new book by Kent McManis, who owns Grey Dog Trading Company, combines two earlier books into an expanded version with even more pictures of the carvings.
I didn't see much new information in this expanded edition but it does have more photos than the earlier volumes combined. If you have the two earlier books, you probably don't need this new one unless you just like to look at pictures of the fetish carvings.
Book Description
Kent McManis has written a welcome sequel to his immensely popular book that covered the essentials of animal fetish carvings. Now he leads us further into this fascinating and expanding art form. VOLUME II: THE MATERIALS AND THE CARVERS describes the many materials that Zuni artists work with today and discusses eleven more carving families. As McManis' many readers have come to expect, the book is loaded with photographs of contemporary fetishes by the best Zuni carvers, from the traditional white healing bears carved out of alabaster to a lapis lazuli mountain lion for deer hunting. The whimsical and innovative are also included, such as a Picasso marble dinosaur and a stained glass mole.

Great, but not as good as the first volume........2001-10-28
This is a book that collectors should have. As a beginner, I did not find it as interesting as the first volume. But it is well worth the money. If you could only have volume one or two, I would say get the first. But because they are both such inexpensive book, you should have both around. They are both well indexed. I found information about every carver that I was looking for listed in the index of either this or the first book.
A Valuable Sequel For Beginner or Experienced Collector.......2000-07-30
In this valuable sequel to Volume I, McManus provides additional information and understanding of this unique art. There is no one better qualified to discuss these wonderful creations and their contemporary carvers. The author does so in a fashion that will fascinate and educate both the novice and experienced collector. One can only hope that McManus will continue with this exceptional series.
The handiest of guides.......2000-07-04
This handy little volume packs a lot in its pages. If you have been collecting and want to move beyond the "oh isn't this pretty" stage and know more about the pieces you have and the ones you are selecting, this is the volume for you. McManis clearly and concisely discusses the wide range of materials used in carving (from pipestone and turquoise to jet and glass) and the main carving families. The volume is filled with pictures that are modern (not recycled 70s and 80s photos as in some other books) and gloriously clear. This book is a companion to McManis' A Guide to Zuni Fetishes: Volume I: The Animals and the Carvers and the two work well together. Those new to fetishes (and collector's interested in a solid reference text) will want volume I to complete their education on this wonderful art form.
Book Description
The Zuni have traditionally used small stone carvings of animal figures as power objects and mediators between themselves and the spirit world. Any object that has special meaning can be used as a fetish. In this fascinating, informative, and beautifully illustrated guide to the fetishes of the Zuni people of New Mexico, Hal Zina Bennett explores key principles of Native American spirituality and how early Zuni teachings can benefit us all today. He provides an excellent guide to Zuni traditions and an intriguing picture of their early life, along with detailed instructions for using fetishes for mediation, reflection, and insight in modern life. He describes key fetish figures, including the Guardian of the Six Regions, their legendary meanings, and the personal qualities each figure can support and help its owner develop.
In explaining the nature of fetishes and the psychological and spiritual benefits that we can gain from their use, Bennett provides illuminating cross-cultural comparisons, stimulating exercises, and journaling opportunities.

Care and working with Zuni Fetish.......2007-01-29
I highly recomend this book. For those seeking to understand and work with their beautiful fetish. To grow with them and through the use of them. Thankyou
A really good resource!.......2006-10-21
This is a unique book. It combines history and lore about fetishes, tiny stone carved animals, with modern spiritual practices to create a modern paradigm.
Bennett is careful to remind us that what he is teaching is NOT necessarily Zuni tradition, but is inspired by it, and he cites some good sources. His interpretation is practical and spiritual all at once, and is quite accessible by modern pagans.
The author goes over the background of fetishes, emphasizes that they are not merely decorative, and explains the ways that he and others of non-Zuni background use the fetish spirits in evderyday life. He then has a dictionary of tradition-inspired lore about eat fetish, though he does suggest throughout the book consulting the individual fetishes themselves.
A lot of the material may be 101 to those of you who have done a lot of animal magic, particularly that dealing with fetishes and other ritual spirit houses. However, it's a great book to start out with, and also worth a read even if you've some experience. Veyr thorough and well-written, and a unique take on animal totemism.
Well Researched Yet Useful In Everyday Life.......2004-03-06
I found this book both fascinating and useful. The author offers a way to bring the ancient tools of animal fetishes into our modern lives, with thorough research and stories from the people who were his teachers. Several anecdotes from his contacts with modern Zunis tell how they continue to use these traditions in their lives--even when living modern lives in the cities. He also draws from anthropological research of Frank Hamilton Cushing, a rather amazing character in his own right, who made his home with the Zunis back in the 1800s. There's a dramatic story, told by a Zuni hunter, about early hunts when the hunter prayed for the spirit of the animal he was hunting, and upon the animal's death shared its last breaths with it. There's a tender story about a Zuni mother, still living by the old ways on the Zuni reservation, who uses her festishes to help her daughter, a nurse in the city, deal with the death of a friend. This well done and respectful book is nicely illustrated with the line drawings of Timothy White, publisher of Shaman's Drum magazine. Its greatest contribution may be that it teaches us ways to honor our sacred relationships with all creatures. This is particularly important today when we need to take much better care of the diverse creatures who help to foster the wellbeing of our planet.
Good info for meditating with your fetish.......2001-05-27
Hal Zina Bennett has written a very interesting book about using fetishes for meditation and guidance, accessing inner knowing. My only real objection to his book is that it purports to explain how the Zunis use fetishes and what the Zunis believe about animals. There is no evidence to support those claims, in my opinion and my 14 years of working with Zuni fetish carvers. The ideas are his own and seem sound and useful. If only he had not claimed to interpret what Zunis believe, a common failing of non-Zunis when writing about the religious, social, and spiritual beliefs of these wonderful people.
A must have for those seeking knowledge of fetishes!.......2000-09-26
This book is well written and helps fetish collectors to understand the history behind fetishes as well as explaining the meanings of each "animal". The reader learns how to put these powerful pieces to good use for him/herself. The information is usable for everyday life and today's society. Even those without fetishes can gather useful information to assist in gaining control over one's thoughts, actions and meditations. Highly recommend this book to all!

Book Description
Zuni pueblo in western New Mexico is renowned for its small carved stone animal figurines, or fetishes. A fetish is an object, natural or manmade, in which a spirit is thought to reside and which can be used to effect either good or evil. According to legend, when a man finds a rock that resembles an animal, he has in his possession one of the original animals turned to stone by the children of the Sun Father. Such a fetish has the soul or breath of the animal inside.
In recent years the market demand for fetishes from Zuni has spurred an increase in the number of carvers. Published in 1995 and now available from UNM Press, The Fetish Carvers of Zuni studies both the history of fetishes and Zuni's major contemporary fetish carvers, their art, aesthetics, and business.

Best Resource for Zuni Fetishes.......2006-11-22
I've been collecting the carvings of the Zuni for some years now and have found this book to be the most valuable and useful source for information not only on the carvers, but on the meaning of their creations. It is an excellent introduction to the carvers, but I also find the family trees very helpful. I keep track of the carvers whose work I have in my collection and this book is the only one I've found that helps me to do that. It is also as honest a guide to this culture and the carvers as you will find. It is very difficult to keep up with the carvers and their families, but this book is as helpful a source as you will find.
With personal testimonies of modern Zuni fetish carvers.......2002-09-08
Now in a newly revised and updated edition, The Fetish Carvers Of Zuni is collaboratively written by Marian Rodee (Curator of Southwestern Ethnology, Maxwell Museum of Anthropology, University of New Mexico) and James Ostler (Pueblo of Zuni Arts and Crafts) and offers a thoughtful, fascinating, and informative look at the Zuni Native American tradition and art form of carving fetishes. 103 halftones and 94 color photographs profusely illustrate the history of fetish carving, works of art, and its practice today. Personal testimonies of modern Zuni fetish carvers as well as scholarly appraisals of this art form round out this book about a unique and fascinating Native American art form. The Fetish Carvers Of Zuni is a welcome and much appreciated contribution to Native American Studies reference collections and supplemental reading lists.
The Fetish Cavers of Zuni - worth the effort.......2001-12-28
This book is worth the effort it usually takes to track down. It is well written, easy to read (lots of white space and illustrations). Now we just need for them to write another volume, it's been a while since this was written, and the Zuni fetish world is always evolving.
A must have resource for the fetish collector........1997-06-30
When collecting Native American fetish carvings, one important factor in determining a piece's value is the availability of the artist's name. This book provides the only source I've ever seen into the lives and work of modern Zuni carvers. It includes several family trees which show how the particular styles of carving were passed down through families. I have found this book to be a great resource and a fascinating view of these peoples lives

A Must Have.......2001-10-28
This is a must have book for beginner or established Fetish collectors. It is a great, quick resource. I did not get as much out of the second volume, but this one is a must have.
Outstanding Resource.......2000-07-30
This book, together with its successor volume, is the ultimate reference guide for the beginning or experienced collector. The author, who is probably the pre-eminent authority on the subject, provides clear, valuable information encompassing various segments of this remarkable art and contemporary artists. If you own or are considering purchasing these intriguing carvings, this little book (and the accompanying Volume II) should be your bible.
Outstanding Resource.......2000-07-30
This little book (together with Volume II) is the most valuable reference guide on the market today for either the beginning or experienced collector. The author, probably the leading authority on the subject, provides clear, useful information, encompassing various segments of the art and artists, necessary for the understanding and purchase of these remarkable objects. The two books are a joy to read and own.
Excellent introduction to the world of Zuni fetish carvings.......1999-03-11
An excellent guidebook of the wide variety of Zuni fetishes carvings available today. McManis goes into some painstaking detail of Zuni cosmology in the introduction, then gives details on each of the animals that are frequently carved now in Zuni, and finishes the silm volume with a discussion of four Zuni carving families accompanied by genealogical tables and a list of active carvers as of 1998. Photographs are extremely well done, however, there are no close up details of fetishes, given that there are families like the Cheamas and the Kaamasees now producing extraordinarily detailed and lifelike "non-traditional" fetishes. A must have reference for anyone beginning or enhancing a collection of these fascinating carvings. Volume #2 covers the extensive range of materials used and details additional family groupings.
A well-rounded introduction to a unique form of artistry.......1998-07-11
I'm a very, very new collector, so I don't know how applicable my comments would be for experienced collectors. But from the perspective of someone fairly new to, but interested in, Zuni fetishes, this is a marvelous little book. It's full of crystal clear, gorgeous, detailed photos on wonderful paper and just the right amount and variety (for me) of well-written information to whet one's appetite for this fascinating topic.
Book Description
When is a fetish not a fetish? Find out in this celebration of the most misunderstood genre of Southwestern Indian carvings. From Beast Gods to Directional Guardian Spirits, this book explores the magic and mystery behind the charismatic, mostly stone, animal figures or fetishes skillfully carved by artists from the Southwestern Pueblos. Enthusiasts will delight in the hundreds of full-color photographs. Pictures and text highlight the impressive variety of forms, materials, and traditional and contemporary styles available to collectors. This book discusses the symbolic meanings associated with these figures and explains how they are "borrowed" for use by members of non-Native American cultures. A price guide is included to help collectors orient themselves to current market values.
Customer Reviews:
An informative book for the beginning or advanced collector........1999-08-01
This would be an excellent starter book for anyone interested in learning about fetish carvings, or collecting them. Ms. Whittle not only discusses the different types of animals carved and what they mean in the traditional Zuni sense, but also talks about the carvers and the materials they use. There are color pictures on nearly every page, each giving the kind of animal represented, the carver, materials used in the piece, and a price guide as well, which is useful if one is just starting a collection! Besides the Zuni, there are other Native peoples of the Southwestern US who make fetishes for sale, such as the Navajo and Isleta, and Ms. Whittle includes some of their works as well.
Book Description
Bright clear photographs and concise descriptions of the collectible carvings of the Zuni people fill the pages of this essential guide. The badgers, bears, birds, and other creatures of the natural world, carved by Zuni artists for more than a millenium, are explained along with the relation to their living counterparts.
