Book Description
Provocative and vital, this groundbreaking book delves into the complex world of female desire and discovers that, sadly, women often want to be wanted rather than to be fully engaged with life.
Instead of being able to know what they really want or who they really are, women have been conditioned to accept images -- the good daughter, the nice friend, the ideal boss, the perfect mother -- to define themselves through reflections from others. As a result, self-direction, self-determination, and self-confidence are undermined from adolescence through old age. A double bind comes to surround female desire: a woman is damned as "the bitch" if she is direct and self-determining; but she is confused and indirect if she plays the Object of Desire.
Dr. Young-Eisendrath shows us how to break out of this double bind so that we can encounter the challenges of choice and responsibility for our own desires. She wisely uses mythological and personal stories to help us take control of our sexual, relational, material, and spiritual lives. If you feel confused, resentful, or trapped in a life that does not seem to be fully yours, then you can find a clear path to your true self, once and for all, with the help of
Women and Desire.
Customer Reviews:
Is Feminism the F Word?.......2003-11-18
I assign this book to students in my psychology seminar. These students at a women's college tell me that they find Women and Desire to be thought provoking, interesting, even helpful. I noticed a column in Newsweek by Anna Quindlen in October. She argued that women today still need the F word feminism because society hasn't changed as much as we like to tell ourselves. It appears that the need for books such as this one by Polly Young-Eisendrath continues to be valid.
Very academic.......2002-02-20
The information in this book is very academic in nature, but still provides some insight into the paradox many women feel about desire, "wanting to be wanted," and wanting to be successful. I wouldn't call it "eye-opening," but a focused work.
Good Perspective Adjustment.......2002-01-23
The title of this book spoke volumes to me before I even cracked the cover. Reading about her perspective that women want to be wanted rather than fully know was right on target for me and because of the new found perspective, I felt released from the need of "wanting to be wanted." I resist some of her claims as to WHY women do this - from my point of view, she spends a little too much time blaming society, culture, men. I think the WHY is important to know, but I wanted to see the book focus a bit more on what women can DO about it. In general, the book more than serves its purpose to raise the issue and bring awareness to it. Overall, excellent, thought-provoking book.
Changed My Life.......2000-12-30
In the first 23 pages, this book changed my life. She hit the nail on the head, so to speak about the crux of my biggest subconscious issue, being the object of desire. This book is a must for all women and definitely for men who want to know and understand women more fully. This book opened me up to the knowledge that I am not irreparably broken, and that coming into my own power is still well within my reach. Thank you! Thank you!
An essential for those who have lived for others.......1999-12-10
Young-Eisendrath brilliantly opens the reader's eyes to the female's struggle for an identity in a patriarchal society. Fables, intertwined magnificently throughout each core concept, act as examples of the concocted lives women cling to and men (and women) perpetuate. I identified strongly with the author's comparison of being the "subject of one's own desire" versus being the "object of another's desire." Reading this book, I realized how both women and men are forced to act in a stereotypical drama. Men - aggressors, emotional corpses, breadwinners, dominators. Women - weaklings, dependents, passivists, bitches. Neither role is healthy, nor genuine. Young-Eisendrath has tackled one side of the problem. Who will take on the other?

Lackluster...........2007-05-17
I keep trying to like Emma Holly's stuff but am not having much success. The frist EH book I read was The Prince of Ice which was pretty interesting. So I thought I would try Demon's Daughter(ho hum). Then I wanted to give her another shot because she had done such a good job with Prince of Ice and bought Beyond Desire - snooze.
The books both lacked true passion, true fire in the story itself. Not saying that she doesn't write an arousing bedroom scene, but outside of the bedroom scenes the books lacked "life". The stories were boring. They dragged. The characters lacked depth. They were basically corny. Perhaps it's simply her Victorian era stories that I find so lackluster but I don't think that I will be attempting any more EH books unless they're from the library. (Well..maybe if she writes a sequel to Prince of Ice) I would suggest Virginia Henley if you like a sensual historical romance with depth and grit.
Two of Her Best in One Book.......2006-03-24
I loved this book mainly because it has two great stories in one book, although they were published earlier (2001 & 2002). Beyond Innocence about a brother, Earl of Greystowe falls in love with the woman he has found for is younger gay brother.
Beyond Seduction, my favorite, where a very independent young woman poses nude for a notorious artist against her very strict fathers orders. The most erotic and sensual of the two.
Romantic, erotic and sexual defines both stories. Too hot for the faint of heart!
Two Stories in One Book!.......2006-02-16
"Beyond Desire" is a book that includes the full-length stories "Beyond Innocence" and "Beyond Seduction." There is nothing new added to these two titillating reads accept they can now be found under the same book cover.
"Beyond Innocence" is the story of Florence Fairleigh. She finds herself in London looking for the one man that can bring her the things she needs such as companionship. Instead she finds herself trapped in a game of sorts by Edward Burbrooke. Edward will do what he must to protect his younger brother Freddie...even if that means allowing the one woman who has touched his heart and soul marry his brother. Will these two find a happy ending or will Florence realize she has lost more then her heart but her innocence as well?
"Beyond Seduction" is the story of Marry Vance. Merry is an independent woman who agrees to pose for Nicolas Craven. This notorious man is an equally notorious artist. Merry has no idea that Nicolas has plans for the Victorian beauty. But is Nicolas ready for the way Merry makes him feel? Maybe he is about to find out what happens when his heart is engaged.
These are two of Ms. Holly's better efforts and it's nice to have them in one book. These are both full-length stories. If you have already read these two stories be forewarned there is nothing new between the pages. Ms. Holly is one of the better authors in this genre and one that I highly recommend.

Will it? Can Shane give up the one thing he and every other Elliott in the running for the TOP CEO spot desires for the sake of love? Will he? The mystery is revealed in the DECEMBER 2006 - #1765 issue. TO FIND OUT THE ANSWERS, YOU MUST READ THE BOOK! DON'T BE LEFT IN THE DARK AS TO WHO GETS THE SPOT AND AS TO WHETHER SHANE GIVES IN TO HIS HEART'S DESIRE.
Beyond The Boardroom is the finale to the awe inspiring Elliott clan and the many lives they have touched and affected along the way. I really enjoyed all of the stories and the way the writers, one after the other, followed along and let the readers know what is happening and what transpired before. Every book can stand along, but it is much more rewarding when read as a series. The writers are to be commended for giving the readers another story of family life and the issues of every day matters. Good reading!

Book Description
During an era in which the cultural world is obsessed with issues of globalization, postcolonialism, and reparations of historical guilt, the implicit aspect of desire is almost never assessed--until now. Beyond Desire focuses on a desiring dialect between the broad "idea" of Africa, on one hand, and Europe on the other. As a starting point for this book, the essayists asked a series of poignant questions: What happens when different cultures meet, and can that meeting be meaningful? How are attitudes--rather than identities--constructed through appropriation or projection in imagery and visualization? How, in the domain of clothing, for example, does the wearing but also the possession of a certain type of clothing or accessory function as a compensatory strategy for certain failures of society, politics, or development? And, is fashion possibly the site for the negotiation of social relationships, local institutions, and transnational connections? Beyond Desire showcases fashion by designers like Christian Dior and John Galliano, and includes fashion photography, African studio photography, art, and documentary stills. In these pages, European fashion designers show how they have adopted the embellishments, scarifications, colors, and textiles of the Masai tribe, and combined them with elements of Western haute couture. Here, fashion creates fantasy onto which qualities such as seduction, eroticism, exuberance--and desire--are projected. And while the random mixing of ethnic and contemporary elements confirms the clicha of "the other," the radical outcome is both strange and beautiful.

beautiful,sweet story.......2007-02-09
Loved this book I also wanted to slap their heads together especially Marcus. I can understand his dilemma his es wife really worked a number on him that made have too much pride that he felt bought and stupidly walked and left the best thing that ever happened to him and Amy. Of course things work out in the end but I loved the characters in this book. Luke the supporting brother, rooting for the heroine Amanda, Amy the lovely daughter and Marcus the handsome hero - it took the knocks of life to teach him real beauty in a woman. He admitted the old rich Marcus would not ahve even looked at her (he loved them, fair and willowy in this fickle days). Many of our brothers are like that sad to say....
Absolutely Fantastic!!!!.......2003-01-05
I borrowed this book from a friend to read during my lunch break and I could not put it down. It was well written and I felt as though I knew the characters at the end. I especially liked Amy.
Amanda and Marcus were both believable characters and their journey to love was very touching. I am definitely going to get a copy to add to my collection.
Keep up the good work Ms. Forster
Beyond Desire - Psychology For Love.......2001-04-02
Ms. Forster helps readers to understand the battle of the sexes. Beyond desire helped me to challege rejection in a positive way. I would have given up if faced with the conflicts Kate and Luke faced. Challenges in love regarding something you want can bring negative feelings and a defeatist attitude. Ms. Forster helped me not to take it all so personally. I learned to deal better with all the "Jessyes" in the world. Don't let them ruffle your feathers. I read about feelings that I have and felt better knowing that I was not "weird" for feeling I have when in the battle of love. Maybe too insecure. Ms. Forster, Thank you. Your book was a lesson in psychology. It was my first read but will not be my last.
Good, Good, Good, and Good!.......2000-04-20
Ms Forster has done it again. Loved this book to death. Love how Amanda brought that stick in the mud, uptight Marcus to his knees. That's right girlfriend, make him beg! Much love to a great author, please keep up the good work!
My first Romance Novel.......1999-12-01
Beyond Desire was my first encounter with romance. What a wonderful choice. Since that time I have everything Ms. Forester writes. She is such a skilled author. You are never disappointed when you purchase any of her work. I loved the characters in this book. I really was impressed with Amy the little girl. She seemed to seal the relationship with Marcus and Amanda. Amanda was a very intelligent woman with alot going for her. Marcus was smart, but he was really stubborn. I loved his brother too. Can't wait for his story.

Hot! Hot! Hot! .......2005-12-11
This is the most sexy book I have ever read! Hot romance fans will absolutely adore this desert tale of sex and passion.
Prim Alexandra and rugged adventurer Ryder Culhane have every kind of sex you can possibly imagine. They are out to recover a pair of priceless bracelets that Alexandra's archaeologist father dug up long ago. Unfortunately, Alexandra's spoiled and sexy little sister Allegra has fallen completely under the spell of evil foreign collector Dzmura -- and it looks like he has the bracelets! Journeying to Persia to confront him, Alexandra is separated from her rugged Ryder and falls into the clutches of the evil Dzmura herself. But when her intense training in the arts of pleasure turns Alexandra into a willing slave herself, can even Ryder save her in time?
Only three words can truly describe this sexy romance.
Hot, hot, hot!
Not a favorite..........2003-12-31
Well, let me start by saying that Thea Devine is a wonderful author, but this book just didn't do it for me. It was a difficult read, a lot of twists and turns including the main two characters hating each others, in my opinion, that's not a good combination in a erotic novel. The character of Alexandra was extremely annoying, every word she spoke was irritating, because of her actions the love scenes with the character of Ryder were always a dud, the part of the hero (Ryder Culhane) were actually decent, he's everything you want to read about in a erotic novel, but the way the character of Alexandra was developed, it ruined a novel that had very good potential.
A quick intro to the book: Ryder's introduction and a little bit about his past, Alexandra and her sister, mysterious ancient bracelets, shady characters interested in those bracelets, the kidnapping of Alexandra's sister (Allegra) and the same old story of the girl placed in a Harem, Alexandra and Ryder traveling around the world trying to find her, some answers to previous murders and the bracelets, more murder attemps and accidents everywhere they go, at the same time they're making each other miserable, the main female character is also kidnapped and placed in the harem, sister is obsessed with the kidnapper, (here's when the book loses the reader's interest), the kidnapper takes his victims with a strap on because he cannot hold an erection, somehow his victims love this, the kidnapper disapears (dead?), the sisters are rescued, finally answers to all the mysteries and those stupid bracelets, betrayals by other characters, Alexandra is rejected by Ryder, then the main characters ended together again (the book doesn't explain what made Ryder change his mind).
I recommend other Thea Devine books like "Seductive", "Desire me only", and "Secret Pleasures". Don't make this book your introduction to Mrs Devine, leave this book as a latter read, enjoy her other amazing erotic novels.
Zero.......2003-10-17
This book was difficult to read because the lead charters were boring. I don't understand why both charters couldn't work together to solve the mystery of the bracelets instead of butting heads. Additionally, the love scenes were not interesting there was no fire. I have read other Thea Devine books and I was expecting fire works instead I got a fizzle. I hope Thea Devine next effort is more interesting.
delightful historical tale.......2003-10-02
Late in the nineteenth century while searching for the fabled Zoran in Arabia, Sir Peregrine deLisle dies. Before his death Sir Peregrine hid ancient bracelets in a secret chamber in his English home as he did not trust their neighbor, Dzmura. However, the sly Dzmura gained entrance to Peregrine's home by paying attention to one of the daughters, Allegra.
Called a grave robber because of his uncanny ability to sense lost treasures buried under tons of sand, Ryder Culhane was with Peregrine when he died. He visits Alexandra to inquire about the bracelets, but she is aloof, cold, and nasty as only an English woman can be when she is attracted to a forbidden male. Dzmura works indirectly as he sends Allegra to steal them, which she does.
The thieves flee for Persia. Ryder plans to follow them. Alexandra needs to go after her sibling so she offers the adventurer anything he desires if he will take her with him. As they travel through Europe and eventually Persia, Alexandra and Ryder have many adventures including dynamic ones in makeshift boudoirs as they fall in love.
Known for her erotic romances, Thea Devine provides her fans with a delightful historical tale that has her usual degree of sex to the third X, but inside of an exciting action tale. Alexandra is a courageous soul who will do anything to see her younger sister safe. Though some of locales and timing for the boudoir adventures seem difficult in terms of getting it up (no headaches stop this duo as Ryder can do it in a sandstorm) readers will appreciate Ms. Devine's Persian adventure.

Customer Reviews:
A good read............2007-07-13
This was a very good read for the type of book that it is...there are many women out there who would enjoy it...it is very informative and true to form...not all about sex but rather about women after 50 in general...it is good to know what other women yhink about the second half of their lives....thank you.
A must read for men.......2006-04-05
Men who want to develop or maintain a loving relationship with women over 50 will find this book essential reading. A major strength of the book are the quotations from women who were either interviewed or who participated in group discussions. The quotations have the same poignancy as those in the play, "The Vagina Monologues." Like the play, this book has some feminist perspectives that are annoying but they do not detract from the helpfulness of the book overall. The book also has some great jokes!
Chapter 3 has one of the great jokes but overall it is a downer. The rest of the book is quite up beat so I recommend skipping Chapter 3 until you have read some of the other chapters. Men should not skip Chapter 6 on lesbian relationships since it contains very wise quotations that apply equally to heterosexual relationships.
Of the 400 diverse women who responded to the authors' non-random survey, 57% said they were either passionate or satisfied with their partner as a lover. Only 10% said they were either uninterested or resentful toward their partner. 22% said they currently did not have a partner and 11% did not answer the question. That is very encouraging news. The book provides lots of useful suggestions on how men can help their lovers stay in the passionate or satisfied category.
Delightful!.......2006-04-01
I found this book to be well written, informative, and delightful to read. The stories and comments from so many diverse women made this book one for all women to incorporate into their home library and share with friends.
Down to earth.......2006-03-27
Still Sexy opens the doors to the range of possiblities for sex and aging. It's a down-to-earth book, easy to read, useful and well researched.
finally good information.......2006-03-24
This book has changed so many of the assumptions I grew up with. I feel like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders. Plus this is a "fun read" all the while telling the real truth from real women's stories and lives. I think the authors have shown how much they care about the lives of women everywhere by doing the actual research to write this great book. Thanks from all of us!!!

Book Description
For many foreign observers, Brazil still conjures up a collage of exotic images, ranging from the camp antics of Carmen Miranda to the bronzed girl (or boy) from Ipanema moving sensually over the white sands of Rio's beaches. Among these tropical fantasies is that of the uninhibited and licentious Brazilian homosexual, who expresses uncontrolled sexuality during wild Carnival festivities and is welcomed by a society that accepts fluid sexual identity. However, in Beyond Carnival, the first sweeping cultural history of male homosexuality in Brazil, James Green shatters these exotic myths and replaces them with a complex picture of the social obstacles that confront Brazilian homosexuals.
Ranging from the late nineteenth century to the rise of a politicized gay and lesbian rights movement in the 1970s, Green's study focuses on male homosexual subcultures in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. He uncovers the stories of men coping with arrests and street violence, dealing with family restrictions, and resisting both a hostile medical profession and moralizing influences of the Church. Green also describes how these men have created vibrant subcultures with alternative support networks for maintaining romantic and sexual relationships and for surviving in an intolerant social environment. He then goes on to trace how urban parks, plazas, cinemas, and beaches are appropriated for same-sex erotic encounters, bringing us into the world of street cruising, male hustlers, and cross-dressing prostitutes.
Through his creative use of police and medical records, newspapers, literature, newsletters, and extensive interviews, Green has woven a fascinating history, the first of its kind for Latin America, that will set the standard for future works.
"Green brushes aside outworn cultural assumptions about Brazil's queer life to display its full glory, as well as the troubles which homophobia has sent its way. . . . This latest gem in Chicago's 'World of Desire' series offers a shimmering view of queer Brazilian life throughout the 20th century."—Kirkus Reviews

Customer Reviews:
Best intro to emergence & eflorescence of gay Brazil.......2000-05-30
Covering developments between 1890 and 1980, Green's book is the best place to begin to understand the appropriation of public space by gay male Brazilians. Besides seeming to have read everything written by or about male homosexuality in Brazil (his book's apparatus occupies more than a hundred pages), including archived forensic and psychiatric case records, Green draws on seventy life history interviews and a cache of illustrations from across the twentieth century.
Green shows that the gap between representation of rigid (masculine-active) bofe and (feminine-passive and frequently transvestite) bicha roles and how Brazilian males lived their sexualities increased during 1960s, and subsequently has been challenged in public discourse, but that behavior and purportedly universal norms were already noncongruent during the 1930s. Besides cataloging a history of growing bicha pride and steady bofe bashful ambivalence, Green also shows that bicha prominence in carnival is a tradition that is relatively recent, emerging during the 1950s, and suppressed for a few years at the beginning of the 1970s.
Green sensibly stresses the emergence during the 1950s and 60s of first bicha and then gay publications. The American homophile movement then also involved only a few determined individuals and fugitive publications. Rio's famed beaches have been important as places where men of varying economic status who are sexually interested in men meet - and socialize, and develop group consciousness, as well as engineering sexual liaisons. Brazilian gay clubs, bars, and restaurants cluster near beaches with gay enclaves.
Simply the best.......2000-05-14
It's indeed the most important register on brazilian homosexuality ever done. Green is a genius and this book must be read not only by homosexuals, but all kind of people that would like to understand a little about the gay subculture in Brazil. The author is brilliant and deserves our respect.
