THINKING FOR YOURSELF... THE TEXTBOOK.......2005-02-15
I always find it amazing and ironic that there are textbooks teaching you how to think for yourself.
A bit ironic, don't you think?
The Operative Word is "developing" Thinking Skills.......2000-12-14
An excellent book that covers such diverse subjects as critical thinking, observation skills, word usage, communication, facts and reality, inferences, assumptions, opinions, viewpoints, arguments, fallacies, inductive and deductive reasoning, research skills and problem solving. And within each subject is a very well defined and easily understood definition of that subject along with examples of each. The chapter quiz found at the end of each chapter helps to ingrain and reinforce the lesson. The book is insightful and well written. Done with great skill as one is actually able to understand the premise and meaning of each topic/lesson.

Featuring stories by teachers who have successfully used the method, the book shows that first graders as well as high-school students can enjoy this exciting and educational process. Practical guidance for applying the process to any curricular area is provided along with an extensive list of classroom activities.

Parenting Plus.......2006-11-12
I was disappointed in this book. I was looking for a book that would encourage average elementary students to improve their typing skills. Instead I encountered a pyrotechnic display of a very exceptional seven year old's imagination. I wish Adora luck in her fiction writing, but examples of letter writing or report writing would be more helpful to average students. Most of the third and fourth graders at my school do not have the vocabulary to follow Adora's flights of fantasy.
"A child Shall Lead them".......2006-07-11
I am so impressed with the humility, joy and delight of Adora, and the devoted attention her mother gave her. It not only is a book about inspiring other children to put their thoughts into written word, but a grand tool for anyone teaching our youth....Then there is the inspiration of calling all mothers to teach, instruct and inspire their children. I am sharing this book with a couple of teachers. I am 71 years young. I will look forward to seeing where Adora goes in her future. Peggy Lippitt
Great book.......2006-07-08
This book was great, the writting tips were helpful, and the stories were very good. I'd also like to add that the other review made by Leelikah is a bit rediculous. She wrote that Adora's writting was "childish and stupid" however Miss Leelikah must not know much about the author considering she was only SEVEN when she wrote the book! Now I understand you called yourself an aspiring author, and good for you but I'm sure you didn't have any book published when you turned 8! Adora is talented, she was reading chapter books by the time she was 3! Not many people can say that they were able to do that. So before writting a review for the book and calling the author childish and stupid it would probably help if you knew what you were talking about.
Flying Fingers-A Teacher's Viewpoint.......2006-03-18
I have been consistently disappointed in my search for creative writing teaching tools for children. They tend to be condescending or banal, with few fresh ideas. Flying Fingers: Master the Tools of Learning Through the Joy of Writing proves to be an exception. A collection of lively stories by prodigy author Adora Svitak, Flying Fingers includes key vocabulary, creative writing exercises, exercises designed to improve basic writing skills, and an extensive guide for parents and educators. Adora's co-author, Joyce Svitak, has a refreshing stance on education, espousing a strong belief that most children are capable of much better writing-it's just a matter of tapping into their creativity and changing your own perceptions of their potential. For a teacher, this alone is an incredibly uplifting message; backed up by step-by-step directions and innovative exercises, it's a vital strategy.
Flying Fingers-A Great Teaching Tool.......2006-03-18
My children have been much more interested in writing since they saw Adora's appearance on Good Morning America, and I was thrilled that her first book included both stories and writing tips. Pairing the two together gives children a tangible example of what they can achieve, accompanied by tools to help them on their path. Adora's stories are quite humorous and entertaining in and of themselves (even for adult readers), and, with the accompanying `strategies for parents and educators' and `fun exercises for kids' segments, they make great learning tools. Since my children began reading Lemony Snicket, I have been trying to find more stories that include definitions of key vocabulary. The Flying Fingers glossary surpasses anything I have found so far; with words like scurrilous and ribald, Adora's vocabulary selection is lively enough to keep young readers interested.

Science made EASY!.......2001-07-20
This book is simply great. I bought several of Jean Potter's other books so when I found her name on line, I decided to buy this one. It is everything I thougt it would be and MORE! I love art, but never thought the two mixed. This is a book for every kid, teacher and parent!
I never realized how beautiful science can be........2000-06-09
I had never really thought how beautiful and mysterious and colorful and delightful science could be. This book inspires me, a person who has never really liked science all that much. Now I do! And I will pass that on to my kids when we do the Chromatography Art Experiment and separate colors on absorbant paper. Can't wait!
Wonderful way to integrate science and art!.......1999-01-13
What a wonderful and unique approach to science education! This book is jammed full of one-page "art experiments." The key is to use art projects to learn some science principles. Among many of the ideas to learn are dissolving, symmetry, reflecting light, gravity and friction. The only drawback is that the book could benefit from an introduction on the inquiry-based approach to learning...From The Science Spiders(TM) Newsletter.
A great resource book for preschool teachers.......1998-12-05
Like all of Mary Ann Kohl's books, this one is easily readable, with 1 activity listed per page, including pictures of the activity. It provides a reminder that science doesn't only happen at the science table! I often make my student interns choose an activity from this book (or MathArts)as the activities are open ended, process-oriented, and explained step by step. A great resource.
Book Description
This volume brings together the current theoretical interest in reconceptualizing second and foreign language learning from a sociocultural perspective on language and learning, with practical concerns about second and foreign language pedagogy. It presents a set of studies whose focus is on the empirical description of particular practices constructed in classroom interaction that promote the learning of a second or foreign language. The authors examine in detail the processes by which the learning of additional languages is accomplished in the interaction of a variety of classrooms and in a variety of languages. Not only will the findings from the studies reported in this volume help to lay a foundation for the development of a more expansive, sociocultural model of second and foreign language learning, but on a more practical level they will help language educators in creating a set of principles for identifying and sustaining classroom interactional practices that foster additional language development.
The volume is distinguished in three ways:
* Following a Vygotskyan perspective on development, the studies assume that language learning is a fundamentally pragmatic enterprise, intrinsically linked to language use. This breaks from a more traditional understanding of second and foreign language learning, which has viewed learning and use as two distinct phenomena. The importance of classroom interaction to additional language development is foregrounded.
* The investigations reported in this book are distinguished by their methodological approach. Because language learning is assumed to be a situated, context-sensitive, and dynamic process, the studies do not rely on traditional experimental methods for collecting and analyzing data, but rather, they involve primarily the use of ethnographic and discourse analytic methods.
* The studies focus on interactional practices that promote second and foreign language learning. Although a great deal of research has examined first language learning in classrooms from a sociocultural perspective, little has looked at second and foreign language classrooms from such a perspective. Thus there is a strong need for this volume of studies addressing this area of research.
Researchers, teacher educators, and graduate students across the fields of second and foreign language learning, applied linguistics, and language education will find this book informative and relevant. Because of the programmatic implications arising from the studies, it will also appeal to teacher educators and teachers of second and foreign languages from the elementary to the university levels.

Best Way to Learn a Foreign Language.......2004-10-12
Currently I'm reading Alexander of Macedon and the author uses latin phrases the way I use the and it. Learning Latin Through Mythology has helped me make sense out of a lot of the passages. To even get a better grasp of the language get, Amo, Amas, Amat and More by Eugene Ehrlich.
