Book Description

Written by Stu Maschwitz, co-founder of the Orphanage (the legendary guerrilla visual effects studio responsible for amazing and award-winning effects in such movies as Sin City, The Day After Tomorrow, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), this book is a must-have for all those budding filmmakers and students who want to produce action movies with visual effects but don't have Hollywood budgets. The Orphanage was created by three twenty-something visual effects veterans who wanted to make their own feature films and discovered they could do this by utilizing home computers, off the shelf software, and approaching things artistically. This guide details exactly how to do this: from planning and selecting the necessary cameras, software, and equipment, to creating specific special effects (including gunfire, Kung Fu fighting, car chases, dismemberment, and more) to editing and mixing sound and music. Its mantra is that the best, low-budget action moviemakers must visualize the end product first in order to reverse-engineer the least expensive way to get there. Readers will learn how to integrate visual effects into every aspect of filmmaking--before filming, during filming and with "in camera" shots, and with computers in postproduction. Throughout the book, the author makes specific references to and uses popular action movies (both low and big-budget) as detailed examples--including El Mariachi, La Femme Nikita, Die Hard, and Terminator 2.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for Indie Filmmakers.......2007-10-03

The DV Rebel Guide, by Stu Maschwitz, formerly a member of Industrial Light And Magic, explains in easily understandable, yet highly technical language, exactly how to create astounding visual effects using the kinds of cameras, computers, and software available to ordinary people. A Spielbergian budget is NOT required. In addition to his information, he offers many links to other websites of technical expertise and training,

You may be making a little family drama, rather than a shoot-'em-up, but the techniques in this book will increase your palette of possibilities. In other words, every indie movie maker can benefit from this book. It's essential reading, period. No one else has published anything like it.

Maschwitz assumes throughout that you are not an idiot or a dummy. Scores of color photos show exactly how every technique is done. He also runs an on-line forum; he and other digital rebels (some of whom are exceedingly experienced and clearly top pros) will help you through the rough patches.

Get this book, go out and make movies better than anything you thought you could do.

5 out of 5 stars This is got the TRICKS!!!.......2007-09-23

Awesome book. My friends and I make ugly videos as a hobby and we've tried many things... but this book has some balls to the wall tricks. The guy is not a scaredy cat about shooting videos with minimal resources and lets you know how to make the most with what you've got. Also has great instructions on how to build your own stuff and pull crazy stunts. Grease up your baby, this is gonna have you running to your video camera with ideas as soon as you open it up!

5 out of 5 stars love it.......2007-08-27

I've done video production professionally for several years and picked up some of these tricks from simple trial and error. What I love is how well Stu connects the techniques in this referrence and compares them to equivalent effects on film. And its not just informative, its enjoyable to read.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in making their videos stand out or looking to up their production value without spending a lot of money.

5 out of 5 stars Love this book.......2007-08-19

I have read a lot of film making books and this is easily the most useful and informative. Anyone trying to make a film on their own needs to have this book!

Book Description

This comprehensive and engaging introduction to visual culture provides an overview of a range of theories about how we understand visual media and how we use images to express ourselves, to communicate, to experience pleasure, and to learn. Using over 175 illustrations, Professors Sturken and Cartwright examine how images - paintings, prints, photographs, film, television, video, advertisements, news images, the Internet, digital images, and science images - gain meaning in different cultural arenas, from art and commerce to science and the law, how they travel globally and in distinct cultures, and how they are an integral and important aspect of our lives. These images are analyzed in relation to a range of cultural and representational issues (desire, power, the gaze, bodies, sexuality, ethnicity) and methodologies (semiotics, marxism, psychoanalysis, feminism, postcolonial theory). Practices of Looking provides an explanation of the fundamentals of these theories while presenting visual examples of how they function. Central concepts such as ideology, the concept of the spectator, the role of reproduction in visual culture, the mass media and the public sphere, consumer culture, and postmodernism, among others, are explained in depth and in accessible, informative language. Marita Sturken and Lisa Cartwright provide the best introductory book for students coming to the study of visual culture for the first time. Truly interdisciplinary, this book aims to be the key text for courses across a range of disciplines including media and film studies, art history, photography, and communication media.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best books about visual culture.......2007-09-21

The authors of this book very clearly articulate the considerable factors of the visual culture in mass media and visual art. Not only the pictures cited in the texts are also quite helpful to better understand the details of description, but also more importantly this book provides knowledgeable contents and information enabling readers to be aware of the significant roles of visual culture and how it is embedded in our lives, influencing the whole culture, society, industry and other many impacts of social forces.

5 out of 5 stars excellent!.......2007-02-26

This is an excellent book for anyone interested in media studies. The language is simple and articulate. The authors provide plenty of visual evidence in each chapter. If you enjoy reading about popular culture, even advertising strategies- this is the book for you.

2 out of 5 stars Practices of Looking: An Introduction to Visual Culture.......2006-03-25

I actually returned this book after leafing through it. It was a little disappointing and did not have much information other than common sense kind of info. Where was the meat?

4 out of 5 stars Review of Chapter Nine.......2003-09-30

As a class assignment, I closely studied chapter nine of Practices of Looking, and researched several of the listed source materials. This chapter is entitled "The Global Flow of Visual Culture" and deals with the globalization of Western media, primarily in the form of television and the internet. The authors explore such topics as the history of media globalization, its effects on non-western cultures, pros and cons of the internet, and possibilities that new global technologies afford us.
This chapter was well-presented, persuasive, and useful. It offered a cohesive and informative discussion of a broad variety of topics, dealing with each one in satisfactory depth and detail. After researching a few of the listed sources, I found that while some of them seemed to be surplus to the actual chapter content, those that were used were, on the whole, represented accurately and fairly.
I recommend this book to anyone studying visual culture, due to its detailed and informative treatment of this broad and varied topic.

5 out of 5 stars Brief on Practices of Looking (with emphasis on Chapter 8).......2003-04-26

In Practices of Looking, imagery in culture is shown to play on the way we perceive, initiate, and direct ourselves in our daily life. This book, indicates that we rely on imagery to guide us daily. This book explains how imagery is the most relied upon role model of today; basically, due to the fact that it is the most direct measure for a humans consumption of information. It provides input on how imagery sells goods through advertising, how images evoke personal memories, and how images can provide us with scientific data. In Society, Imagery can be found in all areas of the social arena. Influence of imagery is never counted alone in any arena. It is quoted in Practices of Looking "That images are never singular, discrete events, but are informed by a broader set of conditions and factors. The identity of science in correlation with imagery is explained in a wide spectrum of social engagements. Anything in the fine arts, film, television, and advertising, to visual data, can provide insight into the way we see things.

In Practices of Looking, written by Marita Sturken and Lisa Cartwright, mediums of influence and expression for Science and Imagery are identified in Chapter 8, Scientific Looking, Looking at Science. This chapter projects ideas with scientific imagery from the early 19th century to modern day. The chapter opens your eyes to the realization that we are constantly being fed ideas from imaging dealing with any subject matter. Whether the ideas are correct or not, most people today take the information and the images they see very seriously, especially when there are relations to science. Maybe due to the fact that science has proved itself in time, at least this is one opinion written in Practices of Looking; life science is seen as the "truth" and is accepted as objective knowledge due to the fact that doctors have a clearer understanding for the body through their experience. The understanding and the experience of Doctors is covered very thorougly throughout this chapter. It explains how imagery even comes into play in arenas we would never correlate influence from imagery, like (law and medicine). This chapter provides us with archival proof, predictions, perspective for current and past issues, time frames, and also developmental measurements. I found this book to be a great resource for understanding the influence that imagery has upon us in society. It really gives one a great look at the daily impact that imagery plays, and how it effects the publics outlook. I would definately recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about "how art and media plays a role in society".

5 out of 5 stars the gift.......2007-07-22

I bought this as a gift for my sister who is a major Star Wars fan and she absolutely loved it. It was in excellent condition when it arrived and t came on time.

5 out of 5 stars Four-Year-Old's Dream.......2007-05-13

My four-year-old boy talks day and night about Star Wars, even though he's never seen the movies. With a few beginning-to-read books, and this great, comprehensive one, he is a true Star Wars geek (in a good way!). We first saw this book at the library, where my son's eyes just about popped out of his head. It's appropriate for any age, from child to adult, because the information is robust but broken down in small parts on each page, making it suitable for reading small chunks to a kid.

5 out of 5 stars A book for hard core fans and anyone new to Star Wars.......2007-05-08

Some books just have an appealing to die hard fans of the Star Wars universe. If you are new, or happen to be a little overwhelmed; then this is for you! Great insight about places, characters, and a very neat time-line and map that illustrates where every planet is located. This is a formidable add to my collection. I liked how it covered events and characters from the expanded universe, since it gives you an idea about n how many events took place before and after episodes I-VI. The hard-cover depicting Lord Vader is second to none. This book is really a "must have".

May The Force be with us, all.

5 out of 5 stars what every fan needs.......2007-05-07

This is a great source to just go over a timeline of the star wars galaxy span over 25,000 years worth of star wars history from the formation of the Republic to formation of the Galactic Alliance and everything inbetween

As a big fan of Firefly and Serenity this book made the sting of not having anymore new episodes to watch a bit less.
Beautiful drawings, photos, and plenty of behind the scenes information on the characters and settings made this a treasure.

I can't get enough FIREFLY stuff. Very well done book covering everything you might have missed the ten times you watched SERENITY, the movie! God, how I miss watching new FIREFLY episodes! Sure wish someone would come to their senses and realize that FIREFLY was - and still is - WAY ahead of MOST new series that keep popping up on TV. BEST TV I have ever watched. BRING THEM BACK!

5 out of 5 stars A MUST for any Firefly/Serenity Fan.......2007-05-26

Great book, visually beautiful book, just wish I could have gotten it in hardback. Joss Whedon fell a bit short on the opening, but made up for it on all the extra's added to the book. For those that loved the movie, the script covers a few short seens that had to be cut, and covers the English translations of all the Chinese inserts. Well put together. A must for any fan of the series or the movie. Unfortunately, I could only give this 5 stars.

Excellent! More thorough than you can imagine... if you have any interest in the universe of Firefly/Serenity, this book is the only place you'll find in depth explanations of the history and workings of the 'Verse.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars GETTING TWO LOVERS TOGETHER.......2007-06-07

Sasahara and Ogiue have been eyeing each other for months now but neither have a strong enough personality to come out in the open with their feelings. So it's up to the other two girls, Saki and Ohno, to bring the aspiring couple together. Their methods are sometimes subtle, like getting Sasahara to care for Ogiue when she's sick, and not so subtle, like when they suggest the two should go out on a date. But Ogiue is holding a dark secret related to her yaoi fantasies. Years ago when she was in school she actually drove the boy she had a crush on from their school because of drawings she did with him in compromising positions with another boy. Now she's afraid she'll drive Sasahara away as well when he finds out she's been doing yaoi doujinshi starring him and Madarame!

Volume 8 was a nice change of pace for Genshiken. While it still had a huge anime and manga flavor to it, this book was really a nice little romance story about two people who care for each other, but don't have the guts to tell each other without a little urging. The flashbacks to Ogiue's past serve to enlighten us a lot about her character and are bittersweet and sad without being sentimental. The art is gorgeous and detailed in a cutish adult manner. So far there have not been any dud volumes in Kio Shimoku's masterpiece of otaku culture and friendship.

5 out of 5 stars Genshiken is good.......2007-05-08

This is the only manga i'm still following, i've falling totally in love with all the characters & can't wait to see what happens next for Kanji & Ogiue, they are the perfect couple! The extras weren't as awesome as the previous volumes, but that can take nothing away from the book as a whole. And watch the second season of the Genshiken anime if you know what's good for you!!!

5 out of 5 stars Ogiue Takes Center Stage.......2007-04-05

In this 8th volume of the manga, Ogiue-san gets a big focus with Sasahara having a major part to play as well. The volume begins with a flashback to Ogiue in junior high school. We get to see how she was into yaoi doujinshi and manga back then. However, her works featured a male classmate that liked her, causing him to quit school. Ohno and Saki work to get Ogiue hooked up with Sasahara. Sasahara confesses his feelings for Ogiue which leads her to face what happened in the past since she's done yaoi art featuring Sasahara. After all, if they are going to date, he'll have to know about this. Meanwhile, Ogiue's attempt to get a boot at a doujinshi event is rejected, but when Genshiken does its spring membership drive, some girls from the manga club stop by as one is interested in doing doujinshi work with Ogiue.

I tried to be careful of doing any real spoilers. That said, I found this to be a very powerful volume. Ogiue gets more character development than any of the other characters in my opinion. We get to see why she acts the way she does and the personal struggles she has with herself, especially since she does yaoi works. Even though it caused someone great pain, she can't help but continue and now that could cause Sasahara pain if he learns the truth, and he could leave her. I found myself feeling the emotions of what Ogiue was going through.

Sasahara and Ogiue becoming a couple is very sweet. I really like how this is playing out and we'll see how Shimoku-sensei continues things in the 9th and final volume of the series. They really make a good couple and even though there are two other couples attached to Genshiken, Sasahara and Ogiue get a lot more work done with them.

Bottom line: I learned more about yaoi doujinshi/manga than I EVER wanted to know. Still, as a vehicle to carry the story, it works very well. This is a more serious volume than previous ones, but it may be the best of the lot yet. As such, 5-stars!

4 out of 5 stars How do you best get two people together..........2007-03-27

...despite one's irrational hatred of herself and the other's stifling hesitation complex out of concern for everyone's feelings?

The answer: get'em drunk.

Or, at least, get one of them drunk, as the Genshiken girls ply Ogiue with copious amounts of alcohol to get her lips loose enough confess as to just why she hates all otaku. So drunk, if fact, that Sasahara is forced to watch over her (and her massive hangover) the next morning. The dominant story this volume covers Ogiue and Sasahara's massive do we/don't we conversation, lasting several meetings and days and ends with "Pit-Viper" Madarame wondering why he is the last to know things yet again. The last chapter introduces a few new side characters in the form of three female members of the Manga Club, who know Ogiue, showing off a few more fandom character types not already present in the Genshiken.

The art is the standard fare with quite a good bit of blush tones to go around... with good reason. Some of Ogiue's freakout panels are just priceless and, if I had the money, I'd pay for the originals to have them mounted, framed, and on display in my home.

The story and flow pleases, with just a few nitpicks here and there I had concerning Ogiues suicide dream/fantasy where it's hard to figure out what actually happened, what she wished happened, or whether it's all in her head.

I recommend a buy, especially if you've been on pins and needles over the whole Ogiue/Sasahara romance arc, but in terms of general fandom slice-of-life storytelling, this is one of the weaker volumes.

Watch the Star Wars trilogy enough times and you'll find yourself straining to catch all the little details. Not the subtle plot points (Darth is Luke's dad, check; Luke and Leia are brother and sister, check), but all the cool gear and gadgets that keep flashing in front of the camera. Like what are those pointy things on Boba Fett's kneepads? And what's with all that ammo on Chewie's bandolier? And does an Imperial Probe really need that many legs? Finally, we've got some answers.

David West Reynolds, a boyish Ph.D. in archaeology who looks like he just rode in on the last Bantha, has catalogued the artifacts and inhabitants of the Star Wars universe with the same clinical thoroughness one typically reserves for studying Mesopotamia. His oversized, eye-pleasing picture book is packed with scrutinizing photos of actual props and characters from the movies, complete with systematic, scientific labels. And Reynolds's friendly, pseudo-academic style seamlessly blends new information with old. (In the Sand People description, you can't help but hear Alec Guinness's voice when Reynolds reveals that "Sand People ride in single file to hide their numbers.") In a few instances, the book shines an embarrassing light on the movies (Max Rebo is clearly no alien lifeform, just a poofy, blue elephant muppet), but the countless close-ups of thermal detonators, imperial blasters, and gaffi sticks more than make up the difference. --Paul Hughes

4 out of 5 stars Great pictures........2007-09-07

I have 2 little boys who love Star Wars. I like the pictures in this book. The words are too advanced for small children but I try to ad lib. My boys love to look at the pictures.

4 out of 5 stars The Visual Dictionary of Star Wars.......2007-08-13

I bought this book and the complete guide for the entire saga. I was more impressed with this book than the other. This book was missing atleast the one character I was looking for Niem (Sullustan) that flew the Falcon with Lando in 6. So I looked him up on the internet and found his info readily availble on some star wars website. I was hoping that they would atleast list the name and race for ever character shown, but they don't.

1 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2007-03-22

This book was just what we needed. My five-year-old son has developed a sudden interest for Star Wars, and since he's too young to watch the films, this book was perfect for him. Excellent pictures, everything is well explained, all the major points of interest are covered.

5 out of 5 stars Very informative!.......2007-02-08

This was one of my very first Star Wars books and I half credit it with my burgeoning interest in the expanded Star Wars universe.
Includes great pictures and information such as what those little knobs on Darth Vader's chestplate are for to what exactly Salacious Crumb (that little Kowakian monkey lizard that works for Jabba the Hutt) does! If you have no idea what I'm talking about, then read this book!
Great for the enthusiast, beginner/amateur/expert and all!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect gift for my 10 year old son.......2007-01-02

I bought this book as a gift for my 10 year old son who is a serious Star Wars buff. He told me he likes it because it has a lot of information about the characters, weapons, vehicles and technology.

Alan Fletcher's The Art of Looking Sideways is an absolutely extraordinary and inexhaustible "guide to visual awareness," a virtually indescribable concoction of anecdotes, quotes, images, and bizarre facts that offers a wonderfully twisted vision of the chaos of modern life. Fletcher is a renowned designer and art director, and the joy of The Art of Looking Sideways lies in its beautiful design. Loosely arranged in 72 chapters with titles like "Colour," "Noise," "Chance," "Camouflage," and "Handedness," Fletcher's book, which he describes as "a journey without a destination," is "a collection of shards" that captures the sensory overload of a world that simply contains too much information. In one typical section, entitled "Civilization," the reader encounters six Polish flags designed to represent the world, a photograph of an anthropomorphic handbag, Buzz Aldrin's boot print on the moon, drawings of Stone Age pebbles, a painting of "Ireland--as seen from Wales," and a dizzying array of quotations and snippets of information, including the wise words of Marcus Aurelius, Stephen Jay, and Gandhi's comment, "Western civilization? I think it would be a good idea." Fletcher's mastery of design mixes type, space, fonts, alphabets, color, and layout combined with a "jackdaw" eye for the strange and profound to produce a stunning book that cannot be read, but only experienced. --Jerry Brotton, Amazon.co.uk

Book Description

The ultimate guide to visual awareness. Compiled over decades by one of today's most brilliant graphic designers, this is a panoply of curious facts, visual puns, anecdotes, serious science, insights, images, jokes, memories and reflections, with 700 illustrations and quotes from over 1000+ writers.

The Art of Looking Sideways is a primer in visual intelligence, an exploration of the workings of the eye, the hand, the brain and the imagination. It is an inexhaustible mine of anecdotes, quotations, images, curious facts and useless information, oddities, serious science, jokes, memories all concerned with the interplay between the verbal and the visual, and the limitless resources of the human mind. Loosely arranged in 72 'chapters', all this material is presented in a wonderfully inventive series of pages that are themselves masterly demonstrations of the expressive use of type, space, colour and imagery.

This book does not set out to teach lessons, but it is full of wisdom and insights collected from all over the world. Describing himself as a 'visual jackdaw', master designer Alan Fletcher has distilled a lifetime of experience and reflection into a brilliantly witty and inimitable exploration of such subjects as perception, colour, pattern, proportion, paradox, illusion, language, alphabets, words, letters, ideas, creativity, culture, style, aesthetics and value.

The Art of Looking Sideways is the ultimate guide to visual awareness, a magical compilation that will entertain and inspire all those who enjoy the interplay between word and image, and who relish the odd and the unexpected.

5 out of 5 stars The Master's view.......2007-07-22

The effect of Alan's work cannot be measured. Many generations of graphic designers around the globe could consider, even if it sounds irreverent, that the influence of his thinking exceeds that of his graphic works. Or, maybe, they are a part of the same view. I had the joy of working with (for) him surrounded by the mystic of a company where innovative values, methodology, and productive manner form a paradigm largely imitated, but never equalled.

The Art of looking Sideways is a real haemorrhage of precious stories, quotes and unique images taken from mankind's (and his) visual memory and it is a treasure not to be lost. The delicious, nonconformist, iconoclastic words and style create labyrinths and paths that merge with the contents in such a way that interaction is continuous and surprising. Each page is a different world. A reveal. Every page could be the last and we would close the book with a smile. Yet there is always another, even more exciting than the previous one.
We have always dreamt of this book. It really seems this work has been around for ever, not just now. Being timeless, plural, and with an enormous and generous vision becomes a milestone of design and its long history. (Could it also be a milestone in the history of every book?). This book had to exist.

Years of hard work, search, analysis, compilations, trips, references, treasons, stories, memories, fantasies and thoughts give way to this book with the most delicate and human sense of humour. A book lightened by a smile of genuine wisdom, that of somebody who has learnt everything from deep practice and tells it with the asceticism and the greatness of great folks. He mentions every day stuff, things that less sagacious views would have missed. As a street encyclopaedia he is saying, as Macedonio Fernandez once said "not everything is wakefulness when eyes are opened."
It is not a history of design, not even close. Nor an essay on semiotics. Nor a book on the theory of shapes. Nor a random encyclopaedia. It is nothing that could be explained in editorial terms. It is a book for designers, scientists, housewives, doctors, astronauts, children and adults, a book for everybody. You just need an open mind and to sit back and experience the difference between seeing and looking. As Jeremy Myerson says on his review, "I think Alan wrote this book for me". I believe we all feel the same. We all sense we had something to do with this piece of work, something that involves us, because it involves everybody. And everything. We all believe it has been dedicated to us.
Alan said: "This book is about many things that I have never been taught".

5 out of 5 stars My "Giant Book".......2007-07-20

This has to be one of the most amazing books I have ever read / seen / encountered. First, although I have read every word of this amazing text, I cannot say that one reads it as much as experiences it. I received it from my amazingly perceptive and wise wife for Christmas of 2006, and I took it to the relatives' house that day. All day, while everyone else was playing Rummikube and watching football, I was browsing through my "giant book."
The design is gorgeous, with fascinating fonts and colors and layouts on every page. The content is an adventure, with information on everything from Salvadore Dali to ancient runes, to the power of an elephant's trunk. There is an amazing "shadow motorcycle" on page 48 which you must see to believe, and there's a photo of a faded cardboard box that the author found to be interesting.
When I finally finished it, I closed it sadly and told my wife that I'd read every word and studied every image in the "giant book." She asked, "What will you do now?"
"Read it again, of course," I replied.
When I was considering a birthday present for my 29 year old son who is a web designer for an advertising firm, this was my first and only thought. He liked it so much that he brought it to his workplace and told his colleagues to dip into it when they needed inspiration. They did, and they love it too.
Get this book. It will change your life! (A little).

3 out of 5 stars sounds cooler than it is.......2007-05-12

I guess because this is such a huge book, they had to print on cheap, thin paper or else it would have weighed 100 pounds. It kind of took away from the designs however . The paper is a little thicker than newsprint. I also didn't see why it had to to be sooo honkin' big. I get the idea that you open the book at random and are exposed to different ideas and designs. I just thought it could have had a bit of editing as I found many of the designs and ideas repetitive. There is some interesting stuff here no doubt, but I was just not bowled over.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book!.......2007-03-11

This is one of those delicious finds that can reenergize any designer who's bored and needs a kick.

5 out of 5 stars The book is full of ideas waiting to be created by you........2007-03-08

I buy books at random, not by selection. I look at something on the shelf and decided if it's inspiring to have. The Art of Looking Sideways is just that, the perspective is left up to the reader. You can flip through its randomness and find something that will spark your imagination and creativity. The book is so big that every time I look through it, I always find something new to read, enjoy, and ponder.

Like any art book, this ISN'T for everyone. This is for someone that can respect anything that's everything created by and made out of nothing. If you want to be intrigued, or just want something interesting to read, this is the book.

A thousand years from now, someone might find a dusty collection of DK's Star Wars titles buried in a library vault and wonder at the ancient strife, fashions, and droids of this unusual, unmarked era in history. For one who didn't know this was a series of film characters and situations being analyzed and explained, it would be an extremely believable history resource. For those who do know, it's a fantastic reference guide for all things Star Wars. David West Reynolds's impressive scientific writing style renders this "visual dictionary" a veritable bible of intergalactic information related to Attack of the Clones, the second prequel to the original Star Wars trilogy. The most intricate details of the characters, creatures, and equipment of the film are revealed in crisp, annotated photographs and authoritative text. We see, close-up, the meltproof Ceramoid mesh of a scouter's pack; the traditional Ansata pattern on Jedi Jocasta Nu's tunic, symbolizing knowledge and learning; and the alarming features of Poggle the Lesser, ruler of the Stalgasin hive colony of Geonosians. Star Wars fans and future anthropologists alike will be wowed. (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

Star Wars: Episode II -- The Saga Continues... Marks the return of fan-favorite Dr. David West Reynolds as author, whose background as a professor of archaeology and deep knowledge of Star Wars informs the "pseudo-scientific" writing style that has become the hallmark of DK's Star Wars titles. Highlights the new array of characters, including: Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Padme Amidala, Mace Windu, Count Dooku, also the young Boba Fett, plus new bounty hunters, battle droids, clone troopers and some major new species.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for the Star Wars fans.......2006-03-13

My son and his friends are big Star Wars fans. They are all between the ages of 5-8. They loved this book. They really enjoyed finding out all the details in the movie. While my son watches the movies he looks up and reads about the movie. It is a great book. Lots of fun...

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Book.......2005-07-08

This book is very informative and it gives a lot of background information on characters that many star wars fans wouldn't know about. I am a HUGE star wars fan and this book is not a waste of money. There is a lot about Coruscant and the droid foundries of Geonosis. I learnt alot from this book, and it is ideal for any star wars fan's library.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable.......2003-12-25

For a Star Wars Fan, it is a must. However, as I described in the other books of this series, it has missing the starships pictures, but is is not a major problem, since the book depicts all hardware and aliens that appear in the film.

5 out of 5 stars My Padmae, Haven't You Grown........2003-09-11

The Visual Dictionary of Ep2 once again gives us a more detailed review of the charcters from Ep1 and the arrival of new stars such as Jango Fett and his young cloned son, Boba.

However the best parts of this book is the development of Obi wan, Annikan, and of course the accidental [physcial] symbol of the new Star Wars generation, Padmae Amidala, executed in purfect form by Natalie Hershlag-Portman. Her now famous white combat suit is complemented by her other eyepopping outfits...Very nice.

A must for those who are keeping a library on this epic tail.

1 out of 5 stars Star Wars Episoce II: Attack of the Clones -- The Visual Dic.......2003-03-06

Actually my son loved the book but it fell apart as did all the similar Star Wars books. (He is not hard on books, our pop-up books all survived his early years intact.) I bought a copy for the library at my son's elementary school and that one fell apart too. These books are to expensive to have the binding be so shoddy.

Book Description

A major change has taken place at dance clubs worldwide: the advent of the VJ. Once the term referred to the video jockey who introduced music videos on MTV, but now it defines an artist who creates and mixes video, live and synced to music, in clubs or at concerts. This book is an in-depth look at the artists at the forefront of this amazing audio-visual experience. The book combines how-to, showcase and reference elements, opening with a series of articles on contextual and historical issues. The central section showcases the work of a wide selection of international VJs, and the last chapter covers equipment (hardware and software) and typical stage set-ups (explaining equipment, the use of space, how to create an environment to suit an audience, and more) along with supplementary guidelines and tips on how to master a performance.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars stunning insightful book.......2007-07-22

Just finished reading this book and have to say its amazing.

very insightful cross section of the Vj community. Much to be learnt about the wide range of VJs out there.

It has a good mix between articles on specific issues, looking at the world of VJs, and technical articles explaining how established VJs have their setup.

The DVD has been produced to a very high standard, and like the book lots of informative content is on it.

The book looks beautiful with all the UV pages, and so much design work has gone into it.

anyone who has not got this book yet is missing out big time, recommended to the highest degree.

5 out of 5 stars Show Pony for the VJ scene.......2007-03-23

This book was several years in the making, and I admire the dedication of those involved in getting it to print.

Unfortunately, that means that in such a rapidly-moving field, it's a bit out of date. Several of the acts featured have disappeared off the radar by now, and there are some quite glaring omissions - such as the EyeWash DVDs, Resolume software (currently used by around a third of the world's top VJ's) and uh... PC's. This wouldn't bother me as much if not for the tagline on the back cover which touts 'full details of the hardware and software available for VJing are provided'. I'd suggest that 'examples of hardware and software available for Mac-based VJing are provided'.

If you get the impression that you need a pair of Mac Powerbooks to VJ from the setups and info given in this book, don't worry - that's not the case. The scene featured in this book is just one aspect of international VJ Culture, and it's been curated from a particularly Mac perspective.

It's a graphic-design triumph - you couldn't ask for more beautiful, slick presentation. The background of Faulkner and other members of D-Fuse as print-based graphic designers with decades of experience between them really shows. Personally, I find the layering and shiny panels a bit distracting and hard to read at one sitting, and I feel like I should put on gloves every time I pick it up as the slightest touch leaves great grubby fingerprints on some of the shinier pages. But it's a stunning, jaw-dropping book, which is just what the scene needed.

To be honest, I don't see this as a book to read so much as to show-off. VJing is a very visual artform, so what better way to communicate what it's all about than in gorgeous, awe-inspiring imagery? Even if it's a bit of a struggle to actually sit and read it cover-to-cover, it's the PERFECT coffee-table book. You couldn't ask for a better showcase for potential clients, newbie wannabes or... well... your Mum... to show what VJing is and why you're dedicating yourself to it despite the bad pay, the expensive equipment, the long hours, etc etc.

A friend of ours runs a Band House, where touring members of bands stay when they're performing in her town. She's a VJ, and so in a good position to plug 'have you thought about using visuals?' on a daily basis. She said this book's been the perfect way to do that - she just leaves a copy lying around and the muso's thumb through it over their breakfast.

The DVD is a huge improvement over that provided with Spinrad's 'the VJ Book'. There's a load of great material on it, and most of it's of an equivalent standard to the imagery in the book - the glamour, high-end of the VJ scene. Positively wow-worthy, and the most impressive DVD collection of live VJing I've seen to date. Some of my favourite parts though were cut very short - eg just a minute or two long - and then there's the bizarrely out of place inclusion of long swathes of content by Elliott Earls, most of which has little to do with the VJ scene - eg a long mockumentary called the Saranay Hotel. Given that there was so much other great VJ content that could have gone on there, I can't work out why Earls' doco was included. It's got nothing to do with VJing or audio-visual art, and the quality is so vastly different to everything else on the DVD.

Like Spinrad's VJ Book before it, I've bought multiple copies of this book/DVD to give away whenever I can afford it. I take a copy to meetings with new clients, and I lend copies to newbie VJs that come along to our Plug n Play nights. The real problem is keeping a copy for myself, as everyone wants to take it home.

The VJ scene is really still very young - maybe equivalent to the DJ scene of two or three decades ago - and we need some impressive look-at-me Superstar VJ's to get the public to take notice, so that the rest of us can get on with doing what we do with hopefully a bit more attention being paid to what's going on behind the scenes on the screens.

I think this book is probably the single biggest factor so far in that process of getting the public to take notice. It's a lush, visually stunning celebration of a new phenomenon. Thanks so much to Faulkner and the rest of D-Fuse for giving this to the scene. Every VJ should own a copy. Or three.

5 out of 5 stars Speechless.......2007-02-28

I was contacted by D-Fuse for an interview for a book a few months ago. I am a VJ as well and I was expecting some sort of paper bag book when it came out. I got it yesterday, a day after my birthday in fact and I have never seen a book (if you can call it just that) with so much detail and so much artistic value.

The audio-visual art + vj culture is one of those books you need to have in your livingroom for your friend to look up despite its content yet. Tp make it better there is so much information inside, even a graphic on how many VJs are per country.

Is a book compared to those of Frank Lloyd Wight. Is one of those books that make you feel like having one even you do not know what is about. The best thing is that you will learn a lot because of the way all reference are managed. And you know what? I'm on page 160!!!

Really good work regarding content and desing, I am very very impress. I am about to get another one, one to show to the people and another one for me.

5 out of 5 stars A great resource for beginning and established VJs.......2006-12-20

This book is a brilliant piece of art as much as it is a great resource for beginning and established VJs. The presentation of pictures and graphics is stunning, and looking at all of the eyecandy in the book can be inspiring.

This book does a great job of showcasing the best talent in the business in the form of interviews and articles. There are also some really great tips and how-to guides that even the most experienced VJ can learn from. Equipment hardware and software is covered thoroughly and explained in detail.

This is truly a book all VJs should add to their bookcase because it will always serve as a great reference tool as well as entertain and enage you as a casual reader. I highly recommend this book to all VJs and people that have a passion for motion graphics and live performance art.

No matter what you thought of Phantom Menace, you just have to love its visual effects and props. Episode I was absolutely radiant with special effects, making use of some 2,000 of them, dwarfing that of previous Star Wars installments and even the CGI-happy Titanic with its now-paltry 500. And the low-tech effects, the physical props of Star Wars, have always been unbelievably detailed, from Luke's scuffed-up speeder to Vader's slightly dinged-up helmet (don't pretend you didn't notice). Phantom Menace continues this tradition proudly, whether it's with Amidala's baroque headgear or the intricately machined (and deadly) armament on a droideka.

A page-turning droolfest, Episode I: The Visual Dictionary stops the film and zooms in on all this eye candy. As he did with the first trilogy in Star Wars: The Visual Dictionary, author-archaeologist David West Reynolds once again elucidates and itemizes with glee, combining witty, pseudo-scholarly prose with clear movie stills and excellent closeup photos of actual props and characters. Every personality and group of note gets its due in this well-labeled, picture-packed book, from the Jedi High Council to the podrace crowd to the sea monsters of Naboo. Craving a closer look at Maul's double lightsaber? Wish you could tell a Neimoidian's rank by the hat on its head? Need some ideas for filling out your podracer toolkit? This is the book for you. --Paul Hughes

5 out of 5 stars Star Wars! Nothing but Star Wars!.......2006-07-07

This book was interesting. It told of a lot of elements in the Phantom Menace movie like biographies of Anakin, Padme, and Darth Maul. It also went way beyond the movie and talked about things not mentioned in the movie. From shortened biographies on the Jedi Council members to looking inside a battle droid's head, this book has everything any Star Wars fan would ever want. The photography is great and the pictures are labeled showing a lot of the parts of machines and lightsabers. This book is the bomb.

5 out of 5 stars Love It!.......2005-06-23

The Star Wars Episode I- The Visual Dictionary is great. It has amazing facts about Star Wars episode I such as all of the members of the Jedi High Council (which I was amazed to find out that there is another one of Yoda's species on it, and her name is Yaddle, and she is young at 477), the species, name, and personalaty of the Trade Fedration leaders, every last detail of a Battle Droid and Droideka, Queen Amidala's dresses and makeup and the reasons she wears them, the sea monsters of Naboo, Gungan warfare, why Jar Jar was banished, Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, Mace, and Yoda's lightsabers, the Queen's handmaidens, Darth Maul's double-bladed lightsaber and speeder, and much more!

This is a great book and will provide hours of fun for any Star Wars fan (at least, it did (and still does) for me).

5 out of 5 stars Great answers for "Mommy, what's that called?".......2005-05-16

We have a 4 1/2 year old daughter obsessed with the Star Wars girls (Shaak Ti in particular) and this is good because it tells all about the different charachters, places, vehicles and robots of the movie in easy to understand, yet complete language.

Very good for the little Star Wars fan or anyone who would like to go a little deeper, but not THAT deep.

3 out of 5 stars Good information, excellent photos, flimsy binding........2004-12-06

Bought this book along with Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, also by David Reynolds. The pages are falling out of both books. I've had this problem with a few DK books, even the children's books. The older DK books are more sturdy. I give this item only 3 stars, and only because of the content. A book with missing pages doesn't get 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Also a good book.......2003-12-25

This book likewise its similar for the classic Trilogy, is a good buy for a Star Wars Fan. Depicts everything that appears in the movie, except the starships, the only thing I missed, but it is not a major problem.
