Essential for all educators of children with PDD.......2001-12-11
This book provides clear, easy to use strategies for teaching and communicating with children on the autism spectrum. The author's contend that behavioral problems exhibited by children with autism are most often the result of frustration that comes from their inability to communicate effectively. Behavioral problems can be successfuly addressed by focusing on what the child is trying to communicate. Rationale for the strategies suggested is provided. I recommend this book for educators and parents.
Easy to implement methods for enhancing play skills.......2000-02-23
There are so many books on autism and not all are applicable to our family's situation. I tend to read a library copy before purchasing. When it came time to return this book, I decided that this was one for our personal library. It's easy to read and I will refer to it over and over. Methods are easy to understand and implement. As a parent of an autistic child, it's one of the few books I've felt that will be invaluable.
Fabulous book for anyone working with children with autism.......1999-03-14
This book is a wonderful resource for learning how to approach children with autism. It is very easy to read and deals with a variety of different methods that can be used to deal with just about any level on the autistic spectrum. As a speech therapist working with variety of children with autism, I continually return to this resource to help plan my assessments and intervention. It is an excellent resource that addresses communication, play, pragmatics, parent desires, and self-control at a variety of levels. The chapters that deal with specific areas, such as enhancing social communicative interactions, often provide you with the necessary paperwork for assessment and/or intervention in the appendix. This is a must buy book! I would highly recommend this book to anyone working with children with autism.
Most useful book if you are working with a child with Autism.......1998-08-24
This is the best book to own if you are working with a child with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder(ASD). It is amazing how much the editors fit into this little book. The overall philosophy of the book is towards an eclectic approach to ASD. It presents many different ideas from different people, all of which could be added to a program, method, approach for a particular child. If you are dogmatic about one method, this is not the book for you. The book starts out with several chapters looking into what we know about autism, a Temple Grandin chapter on what it is like to have autism and a Charles Hart chapter on what parents want (required reading for educators!). Then there are chapters on enhancing communication in nonverbal children, echolalic, and verbal children. These chapter are by Prizant, Rydell, Twachtman . Then there are a bunch of chapters on strategies for social stuff. Carol Gray wrote one chapter on social stories. This book is readable, full of ideas. I hope the authors plan to keep the book fresh with a new edition in a few years. As a parent of a child with ASD, I own two copies, and lend out the second to others who work with my son.

Book Description
From the founder and director of the Lab School in Washington, D.C., this enlightening book provides an alternative method for teaching academic subjects to students with disabilities - the arts. Educators, art teachers and therapists, learning disability specialists, recreation leaders, and parents will discover how to infuse academic material and life skills into arts activities in order to help exceptional students learn. Through interviews with Lab School teacher-artists, readers will get step-by-step instructions for a variety of projects that enable students to see science in woodwork, find geometry in sculpture, learn vocabulary through theater, and study math through music. Case examples illustrate that this innovative approach builds on students' individual strengths and interests and raises their self-esteem - and that all children will learn and be uplifted through the power of art.

Best first read for parents of smart school failures........2001-02-12
Complete history and philosophy of a unique school in Washington, DC The Lab School of Washington, dedicated to the creative education of intelligent disabled students. Most likely a model for all schools in the future. Smith started using the arts to teach difficult students long before the research was there to back her up, then built a living educational laboratory to test her concepts. Should be a useful first-step book for anxious partents of "different" learners, and beginning special education teachers. Also contains some useful and simple lesson plans designed by the artist-teachers of the Lab School, that address particular manifestations of common learning disabilites.

A must for all who work in children's theatre!.......2002-05-11
Sally Bailey's book was truly magnificent. it is up to date and well researched. She has a deep understanding of children's needs especially in the world of theatre. I work every day with children with disabilities, I also run theatre and workshops for these great kids and Sally Bailey's book is a must for us all. Her information is also brilliant in that she has obtained her information from her many years experience of running her own theatre classes. I would also recommend it for parents and teachers with children with Special needs/disabilities, she has found ways to make our children laugh and have fun. She writes with such easy clarity for us all to understand. Well done, Sally on a truly marvellous book! Is there another to come??
A must have for anyone interested in Drama or Special Ed........2000-02-25
This book is informative and contains lots of creative ideas for working with Special needs students. Many of the games and techniques I have used in my non-special education drama classes and rehearsals as well. I read "Wings to Fly" over and over and it continues to inspire me. I recommed it to anyone who is interested in working in the Dramatic Arts.
WINGS TO FLY by Sally Bailey.......2000-02-05
This exceptional book is a MUST for anyone who shares the creative arts with students from elementary through high school, those with and without special needs! Sally Bailey not only includes an overview of developmental and physical disabilities, but goes on to cover pertinent issues for any drama or creative arts class; e.g., using drama as a tool to teach other subjects, mainstreaming, behavior management, class composition, working with other personnel, and other basic adaptations for classroom use. She goes on to cover creative drama and improvisational acting classes, puppetry, developing original scripts for performance and specific lesson plans and activities that work educationally and recreationally.
In addition, Sally includes excellent sources of information from books to national organizations on disability, drama, and theatre; as well as a complete checklist for making your facility, staff attitudes, and program barrier-free.
WINGS TO FLY "will teach you how to approach adapting activities and programming to specific situations and individuals, so that you can begin to problem-solve on your own."
Theatre Arts Comes to Everyone.......2000-02-02
This seminal work by Sally Bailey includes a clear understanding of the practical aspects of facilitating drama therapy for children and young adults with special needs. Ms. Bailey's experience at the Bethesda Academy Special Needs program adds depth to her understanding of both physical and cognitive difficulties faced when working with these clients. Her fine background as a playwright, director, and drama therapist permeate the entire book. She offers many practical theatre games that can be used by a variety of populations, as well. Few books in this field address the needs as clearly and articulately as Ms. Bailey.
Wings to Fly: Bringing Theatre Arts to Students..........1997-08-22
The author writes about the education of special needs students at the Bethesda Academy of Performing Arts. This book is not just for special education teachers - because of mainstreamed students, and those with learning disabilities being diagnosed more frequently than in the past, most teachers have a percentage of special needs students in their classroom. The author writes descriptions of common and rare disabilities, and how their needs can be met in theatre classes. In addition, most of the excellent lesson plans, games and ideas can be used with all students. There are appendices with resource group addresses and building accessibility guidelines

Ballin's "The Deaf Mute Howls" Truly a Deaf Classic.......2000-06-21
Albert Ballin's _The Deaf Mute Howls_ has been rightly rescuedfrom obscurity by Gallaudet University Press. Balllin offers usvaluable insight into the Deaf community of the 1930s. As a utopian thinker, Ballin argued that all people, deaf and hearing, should learn sign language, in order to end the isolation of deaf people in a hearing world. This was a powerful "howl" indeed in the '30s, a time when oral education had succeeded in banishing sign language from schools for the deaf completely. Ballin reveals the discontent bubbling in the Deaf community in this difficult period, and his book remains an important one today for anyone interested in Deaf history. Doug Baynton's introduction to this new edition is also quite useful.
