Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

The Thomas à Kempis fan club includes St. Ignatius, Thomas Merton, Thomas More, and even Agatha Christie's Miss Marple. (She reads a chapter of The Imitation of Christ every night before sleep.) Imitation has exerted immense influence on Christian worship, ethics, and church structure, because it gives specific yet broad-minded guidance about the central task of Christian life--learning to live like Jesus. Better to read this book a little here and there, now and then, than to try gobbling it cover to cover. Imitation is no triumph of orderly thinking, but it's a great monument and incentive to deep living. --Michael Joseph Gross

Book Description

The premier line of Classic literature from the greatest Christian authors. The finest in quality and value.

"The Imitation of Christ" is a collection of spiritual sayings on a variety of themes. Thomas a Kempis quoted the Bible most of all--mainly the psalms, the words of Jesus, and the epistles of paul--but he also used quotations from Augustine, Bernard of Calirvaux, and a number of the German mystics, includeing Eckhart, Tauler, Suso, and Ruysbroeck. Because of such a variety of sources, it is difficult to generalize about the book's content; but it is possible to detect a point of view. For Thomas a Kempis, the Christian life consisted chiefly in who we are, not just what we know or believe.

Probably the best spiritual reading I have ever done. Every little chapter has profound relevance to the Christian life.

5 out of 5 stars If only more people read this book.......2007-06-30

I'm not even a Roman Catholic (I'm about as Protestant as you get I suppose) and I still loved this book. Reading it I felt like highlighting or underlining just about every other sentence. This book is filled with deeply profound statements and insights, and has many timeless principals that challenged me to take my walk with God to the next level and to strive towards greater holiness. This book really does show you how to imitate Christ.

In a culture where sin is considered glamorous, the only absolute is that there aren't any, and morality is considered a matter of personal taste this book comes a breath of fresh air. Even hundreds of years later, this book is just as relevant (if not more so) than it was then. As I understand it, a Kempis was writing this book because he felt that the church had become corrupt; well, I'd certainly say that that applies today, with the church becoming more and more like the world every day. Unbelievers are often turned off by hypocrisy and worldliness in the church and, as believers, we are in serious danger of losing our effectiveness. This book helped me recognize areas in my life where I was not conforming my thoughts and actions to God's Word and I think it will help others too. I honestly can't recommend this book enough and think that this book is just what the church needs right now. If I could make all Christians read one book other than the Bible itself it would certainly be this book.

As Paul said, "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God." (Romans 12:2). This is exactly what the church needs right now (in fact, that's what the church ALWAYS needs, but especially now) and that's exactly what this book will show you how to do. Jesus calls us to a radical holiness and a separation from worldliness, and this book will help you glorify Jesus more by imitating Him and to overcome (or at least begin to overcome) worldliness.

If you don't own this book yet, I would recommend doing so. This one is definitely worth buying; I anticipate re-reading my copy over and over again because this book has so much insight. This is the kind of book that you can re-read multiple times and get more (and different) benefits from it each time. This is also a superb, elegant translation that makes the book almost poetic at times and certainly retains the beauty of the text. Strongly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Christian study in discipleship.......2007-05-16

There are so many great works out today on being a true disciple. Yet this is the paradigm on which all subsequent work has been based. Thomas a Kempis here shares the fruits of a life devoted to the spiritual disciplines. It is at times inspiring and always challenging. Meditation on the insight he shares is inspiring. Practicing the life it implies is challenging, some might even say impossible. It is the perfect work for meditation in prayer that leads to a true sense of awe for a God that loves us so much. A good work to which to return from time to time.

5 out of 5 stars nourishing.......2007-01-28

A wonderful book to meditate on and take in slowly. Humility and grace are covered quite well. I understand why this has been an oft-printed book.

5 out of 5 stars uplifting.......2007-01-15

supposedly ranks second only to the bible in terms of number published. easy to pick up and read anytime, even if for only a few minutes. it's from hundreds of years ago, so it's pretty conservative, traditional reading in contrast to some of today's swinging, feel good concepts.

This study was a real blessing to my marriage. My husband and I have been married for 5 years and we still found this very beneficial and quite convicting. It covers important topics such as: personal christian growth, growing in your prayer life together, learning to study the Bible together, understanding how the Holy Spirit works in your lives, becoming diciples of Christ and creating diciples for Christ. I also really liked the workbook format. The study can be done as a couple or with a larger group.

Book Description

The last four days in the life of Christ are portrayed with extraordinary realism in this deeply moving, visionary account. The Last Supper, Jesus's agony in the garden, his arrest and trial, and his crucifixion and resurrection are described in meticulous detail. Each episode is recorded as an eyewitness account, with dramatic tableaux enacted by characters like Mary, Peter, Pontius Pilate, and Judas, whose emotions and motivations are explored in depth. The author, a German nun, witnessed the events in a vision that lasted over 40 days during the Lenten season of 1823. That vision was transcribed and edited by famed poet Klemens Maria Brentano, and first published in Germany in 1833. Considered one of the great works of Catholic mysticism, The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ has been updated for modern readers as an inspiration not only to Christians, but also to all who seek spiritual guidance.

We recently purchased this set of audio cd's to listen to as a family for lent. We were disappointed when the second cd stopped playing about halfway in. We contacted the company, and they assured us they would send out a replacement right away. Well, it has been a few weeks now and we are still waiting.

The Dolorous Passion is a wonderful tool to deepen your experience of praying the Stations of the Cross. Very powerful!

4 out of 5 stars Revealing and Inspiring.......2007-01-04

This is a wonderful book causing the reader to pause and contemplate the magnitude of the suffering and selflessness of Our Lord Jesus Christ. This is a book that one never "finishes" reading. Like the bible, the reader can return to it for contemplation and meditation.

5 out of 5 stars Mystic, Graphic Retelling of Time's Greatest Moment.......2006-12-17

Jesus Christ's Passion, death, and resurrection is time's defining moment. Its events, retold in all four Gospels, became life's purpose for millions who in turn told it to the world. Each person hearing or reading it would have to accept or reject it, living by that decision. But no one could be the same after knowing it.

That's why Anne Catherine Emmerich's visions of the final 12 hours of Christ's life and love, compelling and powerful as they are, are ultimately ancillary. Scripture accounts are as nourishing as terse: "But these have been written so that you may believe Jesus is the Christ..." But this simple German nun, devoted to the Blessed Sacrament and allowed to vicariously receive some of Christ's mystical pains and wounds, was allowed this chilling, exhausting retelling.

Those aware of "The Passion" as inspiring Mel Gibson's landmark 2003 film, and thinking his film graphic, will learn from this book. Sr. Emmerich's goal, or God's goal through her, was bringing the reader as close to Jesus and Mary's deep, shared love and physical pain as any written work could other than the Gospel. The book is separated into daily meditations of a few pages each (perfect for Lenten devotions), walking deliberately and painfully through Christ's interminable suffering with overpowering detail. It is meant to be over the top, to bring a reader to tears, guilt, amazement, and repentance.

It's for fault of familiarity we cannot read the original Gospels and see the events and characters in as rich detail, with the character motivations Sr. Emmerich provides. But not one word conflicts with the Gospels: Judas, the Pharisees, and Pilate are more villainous for the extra words about them, with Satan the ultimate force of evil in battle with Christ. (Sr. Emmerich's vision of hell, Lucifer's chaining and release date, are frightening for their correlation to World War II and the Holocaust.) Jesus says precious little other than His words from the original Passion.

Emmerich's life, summarized at book's end, shows a woman in love with the Savior she called "my spouse," and who heeded Christ's commandment to love God with her whole soul, strength, and mind. Her visions do not replace the Gospels, nor were intended to. But they place them in a near-cinematic backdrop, with the microscopic precision and drama needed to bring this timeless truth to the most callous reader.

5 out of 5 stars Worth reading.......2006-07-03

I had always wondered about the details of the Passion of Our Lord. Have you ever wondered were the Apostles remained during the days before the Resurrection? where Mary was? Did you know that Mary Magadalene was Lazarus youngest sister?. Besides what is told in the Bible, very little else was known about this time. Anne Catherine Emmerich gives an insight into the Passion that I had never dreamt possible; all of the sudden, that far away time and the all-too-high-to-reach and understand characters of the Passion, come to us as people (without taking away the Divinity of Jesus) with the suffering and reactions of real persons.
This book gives all the detail that one could ever ask for. Of course, as they are personal revelations, one is not obliged to believe in them, but after reading the life of ACE and her other visions, is very hard not to believe in them..... they are incredibly rich in detail and knowledge.
I highly recommend this book. It's great reading and a big boost to our Faith.
Also very worth reading is the life of The Blessed Virgin Mary according to A.C. Emmerich's revelations.

5 out of 5 stars If you Thought Mel Gibson's Movie was Touching, Read This!.......2006-06-30

I can't think of the last book that I'd read that has moved me emotionally as much as this book. I had heard about this being at least part inspiration for the movie and so I got this soon after watching it. The incredible amount of detail that Blessed Anne Emmerich describes truly brings to life the sufferings and torments of Jesus to the point that you can almost feel the pain and tortures just by reading this. It is impossible to not feel some remorse and sympathy for Jesus when you read this and for me, it made me ponder and contemplate more deeply the meaning and the great depths of God's love to undergo all this for all of us. This is clearly one of the best books I have ever read period. Highly recommended for all Christians and anyone interested in the Passion of the Christ.

Book Description

The spiritual classic by à Kempis, the second most widely read spiritual book after the Bible, has had an astonishing impact on the spiritual lives of countless saints, peasants, and popes for centuries. Even today, the soul-searching words of the fifteenth-century cleric Thomas à Kempis continue to resonate, unbounded by time or geography. Drawing on the Bible, the Fathers of the early Church and medieval mysticism, his four-part treatise shrugs off the allure of the material world, blending beauty and bluntness in a supremely spiritual call-to-arms. This beautiful translation by Ronald Knox and Michael Oakley is considered by many teachers, writers, and readers to be the best English translation ever, and one that greatly enhances the life-changing insights of Thomas à Kempis. Illustrated.

5 out of 5 stars Listening with the Heart.......2007-01-11

"Want to know the best advice I ever heard?" asked Larry King, in an interview published today in Canada's National Post newspaper: "I never learned ANYTHING while I was talking." 50 years experience at the interviewer's microphone and Larry's best advice comes down to one word. "Listen!"

Coincidentally (or maybe not!) I picked up this just-received book, sent to me by a dear friend who recalled my reviewing an earlier published edition of this same "Ronald Knox translation." And it literally it fell open to these words,

"By all means ask questions, but LISTEN to what holy writers have to tell you . . . often enough, (when we hear) Holy Scripture, we are distracted by mere curiosity; we want to seize upon some point and argue about it, when we ought to (listen) and move on."

I flipped open "The Imitation" just now and my eyes (lately fixated on my newest pride and joy were these: (p 32 under the heading, "ABOUT SELF-CONFIDENCE, AND HOW TO GET RID OF SELF-CONCEIT")

"It is nonsense to depend for your happiness on created things (and) why all this self-importance? Do not boast of riches, if you happen to possess them . . . nor about the important friends you have; boast rather of God's friendship.

"Do not give yourself airs, if you have physical strength or beauty; it only takes a spell of illness to waste the one, or mar the other. Do not be self-satisfied about your own skill or cleverness; God is hard to satisfy, and it is from him that they come, all these gifts of nature.

"He reads our thoughts, and will only think the worse of you, if you think yourself better than other people. Even your good actions must not be a source of pride to you: If you have any good qualities to show for yourself, credit your neighbor with even better qualities: that is the way to be humble.

"To be humble is to enjoy undisturbed peace of mind, while the proud heart is swept with gusts of envy and resentment."

----

Seven years ago (on my birthday actually) I wrote my very first review for Amazon.com -- for an earlier re-print of this same translation. This latest version, from Ignatius Press of San Francisco, is far-and-away the most beautiful and features cover art by Andrea Solario (1480-1540) from the "Galleria Borghese, Rome" -- painted about a century after Thomas a Kempis produced his "Imitation." Inside artwork includes some marvelous, same-period woodcuts by Albrecht Durer.

----

In his (2005) FOREWARD to this new edition, psychologist and priest Benedict Groeschel (seen by millions on his "Sunday Night Live" TV show on EWTN) recalls stealing his first copy of the "Imitation" from the public library in his Caldwell NJ hometown - slipping it into his schoolbag intending to return it "to its rightful place on the shelf, in two weeks time, the ordinary period for a book loan in those days."

"The title suggested to my 12-year-old mind that this must be a story about someone who pretended to be Jesus. I went and sat by a window . . . the spring sun (shining) on the oak table, I can still see my blue-sweatered arm around the book as I began to read:

"'Vanity of Vanities - all is vanity except to love God and serve him alone.' At that moment I was electrified, and I sat there reading page after page . . . . for two hours, mesmerized by the book!"

----

As for the translation? Is it really the best-ever? I stand by my thoughts of seven years ago:

"I have several translations of the Imitation but I keep coming back to this one. I believe many readers will find this translation 'flows' better than the others, written as it is in a warm, gentle and accessible style by a master translator and communicator, Monsignor Ronald Knox. A convert to Catholicism who produced an acclaimed Latin-to-English translation of the Bible, Knox completed the first 30 or so chapters of the Imitation before his death in 1957. He wrote to Michael Oakley, two months before his passing: "If I die without finishing my translation, please tell my executors that you are to finish it." The younger Latin scholar did a splendid, seamless job of completing Knox's superb translation of what was--until this century--the second most widely read book in the world. What a delight that this version is once again available, [50 years] after its first publication. If you purchase only one copy of the Imitation in your lifetime, make it this one."

5 out of 5 stars And now for something different...........2006-11-05

Going into the details of questions of authorship (did Thomas a Kempis actually write this, or did he translate it, et cetera) is not quite as important to me as the import of the message and how it is phrased.

The Imitation of Christ is essentially a minor treatise, but a better and more helpful description might be personal record and observance, on how to realize the Christ within. It has the conversational style, rendered in lovely prose by Knox (and for the sections left uncompleted after his death, Oakley), which can successfully draw the reader into a conversation with the author about his own spiritual and personal development.

It is not like reading the Beattitudes or the Ten Commandments, where instructions or broad pronouncements are supposed to be self-evidently obvious to the reader, who is assumed to be earnest in his quest for understanding. Instead, it is like discussing one's personal life, one's very serious doubts and concerns about one's conduct and inner life with an ardent, energetic and thoughtful monk.

It is a book to ponder over and indeed, non-Christians and Christians, the areligious and religious, alike can benefit from actively thinking about some of the arguments Kempis makes about, say, criticizing others when so much work still needs to be done on oneself (nothing less than a pithy expatiation on casting the first stone!). Indeed, the first great modern proponent of Vedanta, Yoga, and Hinduism, Swami Vivekananda, said that while he loved and read many different works from all sorts of cultures, the two he always carried with him were the Bhagavad Gita and The Imitation of Christ. Quite an endorsement, considering that Protestants and Catholics alike have gained so much from it from all these centuries.

5 out of 5 stars a spiritual classic.......2006-08-05

I first read this book early in my spiritual journey. Then, a decade later I pulled it out and read it again. Each time it impacted me deeply, powerfully.

I find it amazing that a monk (the author might not have been Thomas a' Kempis, we don't know for sure) was able to write a book that has resonated with Christians and non-Christians, Protestants and Catholics, seekers and believers for more than 500 years.

Some people say it's the second best-selling book of all time (trailing only the Bible). I'm not sure. But I do know that it has helped a lot of people just like me discover how to follow and imitate the greatest person to ever live.

Book Description

The Church is in a season of profound change. The process is sometimes so bewildering and painful that we don't know which way is up or down! Here's a book that separates truth from feelings and explains the elements involved in transition. Its prophetic revelation and deep insight will challenge your "church" mind-sets and give your heart much food for thought. This book is a must-read for all who want to know what is happening in the Church today!

Download Description

The Church is in a season of profound change. The birth pangs of transition are changing the order of 'what is' into a Church that can do the will of God in the midst of a difficult environment. By nature, labor produces a violent change from the old to the new, and it has left some churches broken and bewildered. We must discern between the work of the enemy and the work of the Holy Spirit. In essence, transition forms the rite of passage from one dimension of the Spirit to another. This book details the elements of that changing process.

5 out of 5 stars Everything of Graham's is awesome!!.......2007-07-07

This is another awesome piece by Graham Cooke. When you have read much and listened much, you start to see the subtle little not-yet dealt-with areas in a ministry. Even in the midst of a good anointing. Very few have allowed God to break them such that these are unobservable. For me, Graham is one of these. Always refreshing. Always imputing grace. Truth that builds up. It is not strange that so many love to hear him speak.

What is God's vision for His church? Are we building fancy auditoriums expecting God to do the light-show? Or are we one of those who have made a loving God feel unwelcome in our most holy and honorable services?
Money, titles, offices, positions, head-counts, revenues, building programs, TV cameras..etc...etc..etc
One thing is for sure. If God, who so loves us, that He gave His only begotten Son for us, does not find 'loving Him' as our one and only focus, He will look for someone else who will. And He will find them! But not in us.
Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.
God bless brother Graham Cooke.

5 out of 5 stars Not for the religious or stagnant.......2006-08-01

I could not believe this was written in 1999. Graham is truly a prophet for this season. This work is easy to read and deals with a lot of the churchy junk that has hindered the church in past and today. The confusion one would get is to try to read a work that is written from freedom when the mind is instilled with tradition and religious strongholds. The chapters on transition and character were excellent. I must say Graham has taken his experience and unfolded it apostolically and prophetically to a generation that is tired of being entertained, consoled, compromised, hoodwinked, conned and kept from the simplicity of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Thank you for a message that is refreshing, intriging, mind changing and illuminating.

5 out of 5 stars This book can be life changing!.......2006-02-22

This particular book helped explain so many things that have gone on and are going on in my life. What excitement you can have when you understand the processes of transition and the symptoms! It really allowed me to comprehend moments of confusion and frustration in a positive light. Unbelieveably helpful. Four other friends got the book at the same time and it is a blast to understand what each other is talking about when we discuss the book...

5 out of 5 stars Graham is the real Deal.......2005-12-09

Graham Cooke is a real man of God. He has ups and downs. He has issues just like the rest of us. But he is a prophet. He hears from God and he helps others hear from God.

No matter what format he used for his communication it would be worthwhile for you to read or listen and follow. I have met Graham and he is a great guy and a tremendous man of God.

1 out of 5 stars lack of clarity.......2005-02-05

I have a feeling if I was able to sit down and talk with Graham, I might agree with him more than I think. Unfortunately this book is one of the most poorly written and badly edited pieces of literature that I've seen in a long time. I found a lot of things that are so generically obvious that they shouldn't have taken up the entire chapters that were used to state them, several things that I might agree with if I could get through the lingo-laden, spiritual sales talk enough to understand what he meant, many things that just didn't make since at all not to mention complete contradictions of prior statements within the book, and some things that are outright questionable. He might have some good points in his personal vision, but unfortunately this book is such a mess that none of them are communicated.

Book Description

A sense of comfortable familiarity with the Savior can cloud people’s vision–and even prevent them from drawing closer to Jesus as he really is. His titles and descriptions are heard so often that it’s easy to miss the impact of their true meaning. Even the name Jesus is so well known that it has lost much of its power in believers’ lives.

But now Jesus Revealed reintroduces readers to the true Son of God, helping them see him with clear vision, so that they can love him more fully and follow him more completely Readers will be surprised and delighted as they get to know the Jesus whose face is clearly revealed through the titles God gave him and the names used for him by his earliest followers.

In these pages, readers will encounter a Jesus who surprises and unsettles, who comforts and empowers, in astonishingly authentic ways. Each chapter focuses on one aspect of Jesus’ identity–such as Rabbi, Son of Man, Light of the World. As pastor and scholar Mark Roberts explores what’s behind each of these titles, he brings insight into the theological and historical meanings, and then relates them to life today.

Readers will travel back to first-century Palestine, meet the God-man we know as Jesus, and experience a soul-changing encounter with him. Because to know him is to love him.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A humbling and inspiring book.......2007-08-14

I learned of Mark D. Roberts when reading his response to Christopher Hitchens' screed against God. It prompted me to want to read more from Dr. Roberts, and I started with this. It is a humble book that examines Jesus' roles in our lives: as rabbi, prophet, the Holy One of God, the Son of Man, the Messiah, the Savior, the Lord, the son of God, the word of God and the Light of the World. Each role is discussed thoroughly, yet in a tone that is as conversational as your favorite pastor. It should inspire Christians to know Jesus more, and love Him more deeply.

5 out of 5 stars A great read on Jesus.......2003-07-03

Today's growing interest in all things spiritual has resulted in all kinds of books about Jesus--many of which are simply wrong. This book corrects errors, not so much by attacking them specifically as by carefully showing the reader the many dimensions of who this amazing person Jesus is. The topic is deep and the author is a brilliant scholar so one should expect to be dazzled. You will, but in the end I found it is the subject--Jesus--who dazzles most brightly.

Dr. Mark Roberts has systematically set out who Jesus is, presenting the best scholarship in this well-footnoted book. And he does this in a way that interlaces serious theological insights with captivatingly folksy illustrations--a conversation with his little daughter reveals deep theological truths. We are lead through detailed aspects of the many-faceted Jesus, yet the teaching is easy to follow.

But the Jesus the author presents is not found solely in facts. Rather, as the title suggests, Mark provides information so you can know someone who will capture your heart and your mind. And challenge you to a life radically different from today's culture, one in harmony with God's plan for a more abundant life.

Other than the New Testament, I can't recommend a better read today by which to know Jesus better.

5 out of 5 stars A great help for understanding Jesus.......2003-06-10

Considering this book was written by a guy who got his undergrad B.A. in philosophy and religion at Harvard and a Phd. in New Testament at Harvard, you'd think that this would be a liberal perspective on Jesus. However, this is a very inspiring look at Jesus, his claims, and his purpose through the eyes of an evangelical preacher and scholar. In addition to some profound points, he also brings out the simple points that we often overlook, and he does so in a fresh manner. While this isn't a ground-breaking account of Jesus, it is a much needed one for those of us who want to understand the Jesus who lives today and not just the "historical" Jesus.

This slim volume is vintage Buechner. Six short chapters provide a gentle challenge to meditation for those who are grieving or suffering life's distresses.

4 out of 5 stars Buechner's Jesus.......2006-11-10

Frederick Beuchner seldom dissapoints. This is true of this delightfully poetic view of Jesus' life. Based on some of the more famous pictures of Jesus by various artists, the paper back edition, while handy to have and easily portable lacks the charm of the larger hard cover original edition which contains reproductions of the art work. Typical of Buechner's immently readable style, this book delights the senses while deepening the faith.

5 out of 5 stars HIS SIMPLEST YET.......2006-01-07

Following TELLING SECRETS, this is definitely relief! Reading this biographical material as being heavier. More often his sermons surely lend a hint to his uniquely human, more emotional approach to stories of The Nativity, Ministry, Last Supper, Crucifixion, and Resurrection are quotations of his faith and theology. In the Intro to THE FACES of JESUS Fred begins "He set his face to go to Jerusalem..." One other statement of Fred Buechner's Theology comes in Resurrection, he includes words of a hymn spoken by Jesus at Acts of John. I am deeply impressed by this most mature, fascinating creation of Fredrick Buechner! Retired Chaplain Fred W Hood

5 out of 5 stars The Old, Old Stories Filled Out with Deeper Insight.......2005-09-21

Most of us learned the old, old stories of the Bible as children from our parents or in Sunday school. If we still attend church, the critical few are repeated on an annual basis. And the common scripture readings again cover these moments.

In this book these stories are again repeated. But this time they are combined with a historical view that helps to present a more human view of Jesus, one where we might can view what the man had to go through. In the section on the crucifixion for instance, he talks of how this was a Roman punishment. He adds understanding to the whipping administered beforehand. The Mel Gibson showed this most graphically. But the author points out that the condemned often died under this preliminary punishment, thus being spared the greater one to follow.

Of the crucifixion itself, the whole thing was designed to be as cruel as possible. Death often took two or three days to occur. Jesus was 'fortunate' in surviving only a few hours. And remember that in John, the people involved didn't want the event to continue so the soldiers were instructed to break the legs of the three on the crosses. This put all the weight on the arms and caused suffication to occur quickly.

This little book provides a view that fills in background information to those told in the Bible

5 out of 5 stars An experience of wonder.......2005-08-26

If occasionally you find that the stories of Jesus found in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John have become so familiar they fall flat, this book will help you experience the wonder of reading them again as if for the first time.

The faces of Jesus, his "ways of being and being seen" are illuminated in six chapters: Annunciation, Nativity, Ministry, Last Supper, Crucifixon, and Resurrection.

The focus of the faces of Jesus is that whatever else he may have been, he was a man once and had a "man's face, a human face."

5 out of 5 stars Compelling analysis of event and film.......2006-04-12

I saw Fr. John Bartunek (the author) give a presentation on The Passion of Christ (event and film) last night to a surprisingly packed (who knew so many people would show up on a Tuesday night to discuss a two-year old film?) university campus church auditorium of over 500 people (students and community members). His presentation, like his book, gives a fascinating and compelling account of the theology and symbolism that went into the making of Mel Gibson's film. The presentation was electrifying; the book is no less moving and thought-provoking. For example, there's a very short scene in the film when, in the midst of the horrific flogging of Christ, the camera turns to what appears to be a shot of a young mother with her infant child in the crowd. As the camera moves in on them, however, we find that the woman is not beautiful, but very odd and sinister, and the baby almost inhuman, as we see when it turns its head to give the viewer an evil smile. The symbolism: The woman represents the devil and the child his handiwork. Gibson takes an iconoclastic image of Beauty (Madonna and Child) and turns it into Evil (devil and inhuman offspring). The point:
Evil is not immediately identifiable as starkly evil; rather, evil is simply beauty that has become distorted and false. It tempts us into thinking it is one thing, when in fact it is quite something else. The significance, twofold: to illustrate the devil's role in the suffering and death of Christ and, perhaps more importantly, to show that when Christ is at his weakest (including in modern society), the devil gains a foothold. Interesting tidbit: Gibson used a beautiful actress as the devil, had her head and eyebrows shaved, and used makeup to turn her into something very un-beautiful. And this was only one 20-second scene! The examples go on and on. As a liberal-minded Catholic unhappy with the "culture wars" surrounding so many issues today, I was pleased to see that this film had no agenda other than to relate the Gospel story with the major theme being Christ's love for all humanity, including not only us simple sinners but also those who beat, mock, and kill him, in various ways. It's an invigorating story and makes the book well worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Get this one.......2005-10-16

Inside the Passion is a behind the scenes peek at how the movie was made. It explains why certain things were shown and is surprisingly useful as a meditation tool.

A lot of folks flipped out because they thought the scourging and crucifixion scenes were too strong. The book explains why Mel Gibson and his team decided that they were not going to sanitize the Passion the way other movies had in the past.

Some folks nitpicked becuase Gibson and the team decided to have Jesus speak Latin to Pilate but the book shows that they made this decision for pretty sensible reasons: 1. The Romans had been in Palestine for 40 years. In Gallilee, which was heavily gentile by that time, a smart person must have been roughly familiar with Latin if for no other reason than that it was important to know how high to jump when a Roman soldier demanded that you do so. 2. Jesus was God. He could've spoken in any language He chose when He decided to speak to Pilate's ignorance.

Finally, the great strength of this book is that it so closely follows the movie step by step that even if you never saw the film after reading the book you will understand it. This is an excellent work and I plan to buy more copies as gifts.

5 out of 5 stars Explanation of the Passion for everyone .......2005-09-06

This book is written so clearly that almost anyone should have no trouble understanding the way Father John Bartunek, a Legionary of Christ (Roman Catholic Religious Order), clarifies the different aspects of Christ's Passion as is portrayed by Mel Gibson in his movie. Father John spent time on the set, watching as Mel filmed this great epic and has not only interesting insights into the filming of the movie, but also clarifies the main points, as well as details of the entire Passion of Our Lord, Jesus Christ. The movie is well worth rewatching ... as you read Inside the Passion and you will see it in a new light every time. Our Lord's Passion speaks to each of us individually, touching our hearts anew and calling us to a real Love, that comes from Christ Himself. This is a great book and a great gift for anyone at any stage in their faith.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book!.......2005-07-20

This book is actual written by John Bartunek. He is a priest with wonderful insites. He speant a great deal of time on the set when it was being filmed and during the editing. This is a great companion to the movie.
I Loved this book so much I bought a copy for my mother and myself as well- and I will probably being buying them for a few people I know this year (just before) Easter.
I Hope that he writes more books in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Intimate with Christ and Mel.......2005-07-11

I bought this book for my Dad, but opened it up last night and couldn't put it down. The book is only 186 pages, but it's not a quick read. It makes you think. It brings up insights I never thought about, Mel Gibson's 12 years of meditating on Christ's Passion have born a lot of fruits. Read it for yourself.

Dr. Stevens tells stories from the mission field of Tenwik Hospital in Africa. His stories are riveting, but they are used as illustrations of spiritual truths. This book has deepened my compassion for them and helped me focus on what my purpose is in life. I highly recommend it to anyone in the health care field. It's principles are broad enough that those outside of the medical field will also find it refreshing.

I began to read this book out of duty: I am a pastor and a massage therapist, I have an interest in the spirituality of healing, and I try to keep up with what's written on the subject. Much of it is dreadful. Twenty pages into this book, and I was hooked. It has wonderfully icky medical stories. It has spiritual insights (from a style of spirituality very different from my own). It has a flavor of humble honesty. It has very funny moments. I was surprised: I love it. I'm buying a stack for presents.
