Book Description
“Comprehensive, thoughtful, and well-organized . . . an excellent guide to searching, evaluating, organizing, and reporting the results of information syntheses.”
--CANADIAN JOURNAL OF PUBLIC HEALTH
As healthcare policy and practice turn toward the use of evidence-based medicine, there is a heightened need for resources that cover the process of research synthesis for the purpose of healthcare outcome improvement.
Healthcare Informatics and Information Synthesis integrates the conceptual and procedural dimensions of research synthesis in each of the five stages of the process to produce step-by-step instructions for clinically applicable research syntheses. Explicit instructions are given for tasks ranging from computing a kappa to aggregating effect sizes. The authors provide seven detailed meta-analytic examples that cover a variety of data types, ranging from mean differences to odds ratios, allowing the reader to replicate the results exactly.
The book includes a compendium of Internet sources and addresses as well as several ready-to-use forms to assist the reader in the administrative process of conducting a review.
Personnel in all healthcare domains, including practitioners, researchers, quality improvement professionals, educators, administrators, students, and consumer information writers will find this an invaluable resource.

Book Description
Spectacular reproductions of Turner's works, set in the context of the artist's themes, ventures, and journeys in England and Europe.
J. M. W. Turner is one of the most famousand most mysteriousof artists. His paintings are among the masterpieces of Western art, and the range of his work and the originality of his technique make him a giant. He kept his private life a secret, and his contradictory personality, his love of mystification, and his revolutionary manner of painting all fascinated his contemporaries and still arouse our curiosity today.
Andrew Wilton's knowledge and enthusiasm uniquely qualify him to introduce us to the artist's life, and he concentrates here on original sources: Turner's writings, in the form of letters, notes, and verse; impressions recorded by his contemporaries; and reviews of his exhibited works. A comprehensive illustrated chronology covers Turner's travels, exhibitions, and projects, and includes portraits of his friends and patrons, views of places with which he was associated, and works by other artists who played a crucial role in forming his style and thought.
Revised and updated edition
Now with color illustrations throughout (200 illustrations total, 150 in color)
Forty-four works are new to the book
Includes a recently discovered watercolor

Terrific Introduction to J.M.W. Turner.......2007-04-15
I checked this book out at my local library. It is so good, I'm going to buy it. While I knew who Turner was and had seen one or two reproductions of his work in books about other, later artists, I had seen little of his work and knew nothing about him before reading this book. It has been an absolutely wonderful introduction and has spurred me to look for more about Turner's art. There are something like 168 reproductions of oil paintings, watercolors, and drawings; most of them are large and in color; all of them are outstanding. I have looked at them in awe. The great landscape painter is himself a marvel. His prodigious talent revealed itself very early (by age 11 at least) and was recognized by his father, a London barber. He hung his son's paintings in the window of his barbershop with prices attached. Thus, Turner was a professional from childhood. In as much he was blessed with a reasonably long, healthy, and extremely productive life as well as extraordinary creativity which increased, rather than decreased with age, Turner left the world with a huge treasure-trove of great art. Stylistically it spans the period from the Old Masters of the seventeen century to the Expressionists, and in my view, towards the end of his career, it verges on Abstract Expressionism.
This book is a biography of the artist as he was perceived during his life. Thus, it is filled with an abundance of quotations from contemporary sources, which serves to make Turner a very real and likeable, though very prickly, man. However, the emphasis is on the pictures. Wilton is a Turner scholar. His discussion is well-informed, without being pedantic or impenetrably academic. He has appended lists of the contents of Turner's house/studio and the contents of his library, which were made after his death, a bibliography, and an index of the pictures included in the book, which identifies their locations.
Fantastic Art Book.......2007-03-03
Excellent reproductions that will knock your socks off. Also, interesting read.

Book Description
The English romantic painter J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) is known and admired for portraying the transcendent power and turbulence of nature in his paintings of landscapes and storms at sea. But, as William S. Rodner's beautifully illustrated book makes clear, Turner also drew inspiration from the sweeping new forces of the Industrial Revolution that were to transform Britain and the world during his lifetime.
Rodner considers Turner's paintings of machine subjects as invaluable visual sources for understanding the impact of the Industrial Revolution. He assesses the full range of Turner's industrial art and the context of its creation, examining particular facets of Turner's concern with industrialism. Such paintings as Rain, Steam, and Speed and Snow Storm: Steamboat off a Harbour's Mouth reveal the confidence and the anxiety associated with the period's wrenching social and economic transformations. Machines and workshops became sophisticated metaphors for human aspiration and weakness.
Turner's industrial paintings were consistent with the larger themes that influenced his art, and in depicting the contest between steam power and environmental forces, he is unerring in his belief that nature always emerges triumphant.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely a Must Book on Turner and 19th Century Art.......2006-09-23
Rodner's book was one of several top books from many thousands I went through in a long hegira through a college library with immense holdings in Art History. His immaculate chronology pulls back the curtain on what Turner experienced as the steam engine began its historical ascendancy in the first half of the 19th century. Even if you are very familiar with the works of Turner, this book will bring you far closer to the distinction and sensitivity of Turner's complex understanding of modernism. Many of Turner's paintings can be seen in the context of not only his travels, but how remarkably astute he was to the constantly changing pictorial impact of the industrial revolution. Further, as Rodner shows in a model of balanced intellectual enquiry, Turner recreates himself as artist as he engages History itself.
An all around great book and an outstanding eye-opener for students as well as Turner specialists.

Turner in His Time, Revised and Updated Edition
ASIN: 0198600259 |
Book Description
The first ever authoritative guide to Turner and all aspects of his art J. M. W. Turner is generally acknowledged not only as Britain's greatest painter, but as one of the finest and most original of all landscape painters. His long life and exceptionally large and varied oeuvre has created a body of art, and accompanying literature and primary sources, that are daunting and often inaccessible to the scholar and Turner enthusiast alike. The Oxford Companion to J. M. W. Turner, the first reference work devoted entirely to this artist, is an authoritative guide to every aspect of Turner's life, his art, his reception past and present, and the cultural, social, and political context in which he worked. Written by a team of the foremost Turner scholars in the world, the Companion presents the very latest information available, in a form that is both easy to use and enjoyable to read. Over 760 alphabetical entries offer * the fullest possible accounts of the private and public life of this baffling and secretive man - his family and friends, his mistresses and children; his interests and travels, patrons and associates, his will and bequest * details of his working methods; his stylistic development; the artists who influenced and inspired him, and those whom he influenced in turn; pupils and assistants; exhibitions during his lifetime, and the prices paid for his pictures * full coverage of the subjects and topographies depicted in his art, from Walter Scott's country house at Abbotsford to his panoramic views of Zurich * over 100 entries on the most important individual works and groups of works-oils, watercolours, and engravings, both exhibited and unexhibited * contextual coverage of contemporary artists, literary influences, political events and the issues of his day, from slavery to the Sublime * a complete account of past and modern Turner scholarship, and of important exhibitions, public and private collections, dealers and the market for his art today WITH: EXQUISITE COLOUR PLATES; CHRONOLOGY OF HIS LIFE AND TIMES; EXTENSIVE BIBLIOGRAPHY; LISTING OF PUBLIC COLLECTIONS WITH WORKS BY TURNER
Customer Reviews:
Lives up to its title.......2004-01-14
Although certain Oxford Companions have been flawed -- that to "Film" had a lot of errors; and in my minority opinion that to "English Literature" wastes far too much space on tangential matters -- most are informative, authoritative, and endlessly browsable. This new Companion to Turner belongs among them. With all the detail it offers about Turner, it's a substantial work and one that will only appeal to those who already have one or more collections of his works; it's understandable that this volume does not duplicate these; if it did, its weight and size (and unwieldiness) and price would rocket.
My only disappointment so far is admittedly peripheral: why does such a scholarly (and expensive) volume not come in the black (or immensely dark blue) cloth that OUP gives to most of its hardbacks?
WORDY AND FEW PAINTINGS.......2003-07-26
Maybe I am silly but if you are going to call a book a companion on a painter you should have plenty of paintings from each of the periods in his/her life to share with the reader. This book is primarily sound even exciting scholarship with a paltry amount of paintings.
If you are taking a graduate course in art history it is right on target however if you are madly in love with the art of this giant go elsewhere for your pleasure.

Book Description
This collection of Turner's art is one of the most representative of his watercolors and drawings and shows why he was considered the greatest artist of his time.
Customer Reviews:
Eyes innocence!.......2005-12-28
In last instance, the final purpose may be resumed in this superb statement of Goethe, extracted from his Theory of the colors: "If the totality of the colors offers itself from outside of the eye, that will produce it pleasure, due it will have as a real fact, the sum of its own activity."
Sixty years of untiring effort. More that nineteen thousand of drawings and sketches,. The impressive journey that would lead him through his very personal painting. Turner possessed that supreme rank, manifested itself as a driving force that altered the visual perception, that allowed him to establish a direct access to the visible character of the nature and in the meantime to understand , from a new perspective the singularity of his pictorial work. Precisely, these hues of painting, the suggested vision through the gradation or juxtaposition of the colors, presupposes and active spectator, confronted with these curious contrasts of tonality and kaleidoscopic spell in its countless facets.
Turner has always been one of my supreme icons of the painting. When you visit London don' t forget in your personal agenda, Tate Gallery and the National Gallery.
But in the meantime, this book will give you the minimum facets of this hyper skilled painter. An immortal name among the greatest colossus of the visual arts.
Run away! Run away!.......2003-06-03
This book is basically unreadable. Impenetrable metaphysical terminology is used in dense, convoluted sentences to convey abstruse theories of meaning (at least I think that's what it is) in such a way as to be completely and utterly opaque. Half the time I didn't know what the guy was talking about, and I have a degree in this stuff and belong to Mensa. If you're interested in Turner, you'd do better to look elsewhere.
Some good reproductions though, and if you're just interested in the pictures, the price is right. Hence the two stars; the text would be zero, since it's useless.
