Book Description

Incisive analyses of mass media – including such forms as talk shows, MTV, the Internet, soap operas, television sitcoms, dramatic series, pornography, and advertising—enable this provocative new edition of Gender, Race and Class in Media to engage students in critical mass media scholarship. Issues of power related to gender, race, and class are integrated into a wide range of articles examining the economic and cultural implications of mass media as institutions, including the political economy of media production, textual analysis, and media consumption.

Ten new, original essays are included in this text, along with compelling previously published articles and book chapters by both established media scholars and new voices in the field. Together with new section introductions by Gail Dines and Jean Humez, the readings provide a solid yet accessible critical introduction to mass media studies.

Features:

Original essaysand important reprinted articlesfrom renowned scholars comprise this comprehensive and diverse volume . Work in cultural studies and queer theory is made accessible to undergraduate students . Extensive bibliography and media resources encourage conscientious activism. Race is examined throughout the text rather than treated in a separate chapter.

New to the Second Edition:

  1. Expanded coverage of "queer" representations in mass media
  2. New section introductions provide readers with a guide for each section
  3. New section on the violence debates and a new section on the Internet
  4. Two sections devoted to consumerism, marketing, and advertising

Recommended for courses in mass media, feminist theory, race, class, and gender, and social theory in the Sociology, Communication, and Women’s Studies disciplines. Also recommended as a general reference title for scholars and anyone interested in the representation of race, class, and gender in the media.

3 out of 5 stars Wow... are we not spellchecking or editing books anymore??.......2007-06-21

First, let me say that the premise of each article was great for a 400- or 500-level college course and prompted many heated discussions.

But, along the lines of the other reviewer... how are we to take it seriously when we come across dozens of grammatical errors, missing words (the most prevalent error) and punctuation disasters? It read as though the articles were submitted, read by a third-grader and then stuffed hurriedly into the book for publication. A quick read by the "editors" would have found the vast majority of errors.

This is not something isolated, for 3 out of the 4 textbooks I have been assigned this summer session have dozens (yes, "dozens") of grammatical, typographical and punctuation disasters -- books well into their 2nd, 4th and 7th editions. No wonder kids graduating college habitually spell "too" as "to."

Fix the errors before you print the third edition!

2 out of 5 stars Fair information, edited by a twit........2004-02-15

I could not finish reading the book, because I could not take the authors seriously. The many misspellings and mechanical errors were far to distracting. This text is a worthy example of how NOT to write a book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resourse for post-modern media theory........1999-09-14

As the media becomes one of the most dominant means by which we frame our social reality, it becomes crucial for each of us to understand how media can become a mean to someone's own end. An excellent treatment of hegemony and dominant/ prefered readings. This should be a required text in all communication/ social science programs. But it ain't bad readin' for anyone else who consumes media either, namely you!

5 out of 5 stars Media, stereotypes, white ideologies, marginalization........1999-01-11

An excellent reader explaining the media's role in perpetrating common stereotypes of historically marginalized people. Includes analysis of advertising, sexual representation, TV and music. An excellent textbook for cultural studies.

4 out of 5 stars best text reader ever for my communication major.......1998-12-06

broad and complete view point on the issues that face college critics in media fields. Most comprehensive text I have been required to buy with my major. Would highly recommend to other prof.s

Book Description

In a refreshingly honest investigation of the true nature of love, don Miguel Ruiz brings to light the commonly held fallacies and misplaced expectations about love that permeate most relationships. In the tradition of Carlos Castaneda, he uses inspirational stories to impart the wisdom of three fundamental Toltec masteries (Awareness, Transformation, and Love). The themes explored include the Toltec wisdom of the heart, the track of love, and the war of control.

Book Description

Relationship expert Regena Thomashauer teaches the lost "womanly arts" of identifying your desires, having fun no matter where you are, knowing sensual pleasure, befriending your inner bitch, flirting (in a way that makes your day, not just his), and more -- because making pleasure your priority can actually help you reach your goals. So if you need a refresher course in fun -- and you know you do -- come to Mama.

Download Description

"The irrepressible founder of a hugely popular ""school for goddesses"" shows you how celebrating your sensuality can help you achieve your dreams. You've heard the saying ""Do what you love, and the money will follow."" Mama Gena takes that sentiment one step further, and exhorts women to do what they love because everything will follow -- success, romance, wealth, fulfillment. Profiled everywhere from The New York Times to The Conan O'Brien Show, relationship expert Regena Thomashauer (a.k.a. Mama Gena) urges women to learn this simple principle: self-indulgence is the key to self-empowerment. But in order to pursue pleasure, one must know pleasure. Believe it or not, most women can't pinpoint what really makes them happy. After all, are women ever taught to celebrate their appetites, whether it's for chocolate ice cream or a more entertaining sex life? In her ""School of Womanly Arts,"" Mama Gena transforms ordinary women into glowing Sister Goddesses -- women fully in tune with the mystical, creative power of their sensuality -- and teaches them how to use their creative power to build the life they want. She explains the lost art of giving in to desires (even if it's just for a new lipstick), seeking fun and plea-sure at home and at work, and navigating the world using feminine power instead of patriarchal rules. This is pleasure boot camp, and be forewarned, the exercises are tough: assignments include flirting for fun, flexing your intuition, buying yourself presents, bragging about your accomplishments, and much more. Sister Goddesses report magical results: they get job offers, fall in love, find new possibilities and passions. Mama Gena's School of Womanly Arts will help readers across the country recognize and unleash their full feminine potential -- and have a great time doing it.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic on Man/Woman Relationships and Pleasure.......2007-08-29

I love Moma Gena's attitudes about having more fun and pleasure for both the man and the woman. What happens outside the bedroom clearly translates into the bedroom. This book is one of my favorites!

5 out of 5 stars Changed my life.......2007-08-28

I didn't know what to expect when I read this book, but I heard Christine Northrup mention it in her recent talk and decided to check it out. I wish I had this book when I was twenty, it would have saved me a lot of tears over lost loves-and guilt when it comes to dating several men. But its never too late to read this.. Almost 30 years later I'm learning what every mother should be teaching their daughters. Mama Gena gives out exercises-some aren't surprising, but one in particular was well worth buying the book-she refers to it as Bitte et Chat and it really changes the way the world responds to you..Her book gave me the courage to asked a guy to dinner-something I was taught never to do-he was pretty surprised as we had formally talked for months. His first personal question to me was "What do you like to do for fun" after reading her book I now recognize the significance of his question and now know this guy has potential.

5 out of 5 stars A warm and wonderful book.......2007-08-23

The world can be cold, but Mama Gena is warm. Her book is like a cup of hot chocolate and and injection of womanly wisdom from a grand eccentric aunt. This is a little treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Mama Gena's School of Womanly Arts.......2007-06-08

It's about time, ladies. Awesome, outrageous, and funny as heck. Over due information and advice.

5 out of 5 stars Mama Gena's School of Womanly Arts: Using the Power of Pleasure to Have Your Way with the World.......2007-04-11

What a hoot! Too bad my own mother didn't teach me these principles. I could have saved money on books, workshops, and therapy. Fun info!

      • Includes 269 rare images

      •  Composed by one of the world’s foremost scholars of the Kama Sutra and Indian art

The erotic sentiments described in the Hindu love classic the Kama Sutra constitute the most famous work on sex ever created. Written almost 2,000 years ago, the Kama Sutra deals with all aspects of sexual life, including the principles and techniques of sexual pleasure and how to best achieve ecstatic expression of life’s beauty.

In this complete and illustrated guide Lance Dane accompanies the Kama Sutra text with 269 illustrations and great works of art that encompass coins, palm leaf manuscripts, sculptures, ancient toys, jewelry, architecture, ivory combs, birch bark, cloth, paintings, frescoes, and scrolls. Gathered from museums and private collections around the world—as well as the author’s own collection of over 300,000 photographs—these rare images clearly illustrate all 64 sexual positions and the erotic instructions set forth in the Kama Sutra. The result is a dazzling and sensuous reading experience through which the teachings of the Kama Sutra spring to life.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2007-07-26

This is the exact form of the Kama Sutra that I have been looking for. It is illustrated with original Indian artwork. It is an abridged version of the Kama Sutra text but it has the sections that most individuals are most often interested in, the ones on sex. It is not a book that is all about sex but has a large part about relationships and gives some good insight into the Indian culture.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent information on sex and relationships.......2005-07-12

The Kama Sutra has a huge reputation based on only one of its five sections. The positions would be Part 2 and only one chapter of the ten in that section. Most books with Kama Sutra in the title are just going to be some porn structured around that chapter. The entire book is not so much useful in describing the physics of sex as for describing the psychology of sex. (It is good for physical stuff too. At one point it gives a method to get to the G-spot with the fingers, so I have to give Indian medicine props there.)

The five sections are as follows:
Part 1 - Describes how to be attractive. You should bathe before you will be meeting the opposite sex and do something to get your breath smelling better. Also clean your apartment. People call it ritual, but it is excellent advice on not being a slob. For women it gives a listing of the 64 arts which will let you be the favorite in the harem. They are fun. Who wouldn't love a woman who does yoga, can inlay a marble table and knows how to design and build irrigation systems? Much more fun to try to be than the Proverbs 31 woman, but on the other hand kind of a strange laundry list of talents.
Part 2 - The positions, hugging, kissing, scratching and oral. Size of the man and the woman and which positions are better to even thing out in that regard.
Part 3 - How to negotiate an arranged marriage (not so useful now). How to devirginize your bride. You won't be sexing her until about two weeks into the marriage. Its all about gaining her trust and her being comfortable so she won't have hang ups about men, and sadly it doesn't apply to most marriages or devirginizations today.
Part 4 - Handling your harem. How the harem women should treat one another and how to keep them one big happy family.
Part 5 - Other men's wives/concubines and how to sneak around with them.
Part 6 - Courtesans. Kind of like etiquette for prostitutes, except courtesans aren't prostitutes. For example there is some etiquette on how to handle the courtesan living with you and your wives.
Part 7 - Being a hottie. How to make some aprodisiacs and some nice little tricks. This section is probably better advice for the sex life than the positions in that the anatomy is here.

I highly recommend the Kama Sutra but not to people who are looking for the book by reputation as sex sex sex. The book is very much about sex, but more about the whole world of etiquette surrounding male female relations. Virgin marriages (virgin women anyway) are taken for granted and one whole section is about devirginizing the woman AFTER THE MARRIAGE. The advice is very good because it tells how to go about building relationships not how to have one night stands.

Get this book to study and think about and view it as relationship advice and not physical sex advice. So much of the book is about communication and is dead on that it is no wonder it is a classic and likewise shows how important communication is to good sex. In terms of this specific translation, just go for a modern translation of the whole book. A picture book of the positions is not the Kama Sutra and the Richard Burton translation is very stilted. This translation works and pictures are reproductions of Indian art not photos of models, so they are less likely to contribute to dissatisfaction or distance with the partner. As with all sexy books avoid used copies.

      1 out of 5 stars Inept adaptation.......2005-01-22

The Sanskrit translations are innacurate,Deities mis-identified,& images poorly reproduced, oftentimes inexcusably blurry.
Of the vast storehouse of India's absolutely beautiful erotic art, only the worst, most primitive & poorly executed examples are displayed in this book.

3 out of 5 stars Good historical info.......2004-01-29

This book is good for historical and artistic content. However, if you are looking for something more modern that will show you actual poses, don't get this book.

4 out of 5 stars The Complete Illustrated Kama Sutra - Lance Dane.......2004-01-02

Of the versions available in bookstores, this one I thought to be most comprehensive in content. The graphics are reproductions of original art and not real life couples - which is a relief, and pleasing to the eye.

The presentation falls short in that the book - for it's size - has print too bold, and the graphics are intimidating. But for a person who is looking for a good Kama Sutra to own - for it's artistic and historic significance - this one will work out just great.

"Voluptuous Panic is simultaneously appalling and thrilling, repellent and seductive, grotesque and gorgeous-not a typical coffee table book. It would go better with absinthe drunk from a human skull."-Gary Meyer, Clean Sheets

When Voluptuous Panic: The Erotic World of Weimar Berlin first appeared in the fall of 2000, it inspired wide acclaim and multiple printings. Anticipating the expanded edition, Feral House placed Voluptuous Panic out of print, and for the past year buyers paid as much as $460 to online dealers for a used copy.

This sourcebook of hundreds of rare visual delights from pre-Nazi, Cabaret-period "Babylon on the Spree" has the distinction of being praised both by scholars and avatars of contemporary culture, inspiring hip clubgoers, filmmakers, gay historians, graphic designers, and musicians like the Dresden Dolls and Marilyn Manson.

Voluptuous Panic's expanded edition includes the new illustrated chapter, "Sex Magic and the Occult," documenting German pagan cults and their bizarre erotic rituals, including instructions for entering into the "Sexual Fourth Dimension." The deluxe hardcover edition also includes sensational accounts of hypno-erotic cabaret acts, Berlin Fetish prostitution ("The Boot Girl Visit"), gay life ("A Wild-Boy Initiation!"), descriptions and illustrations of Aleister Crowley's Berlin OTO Secret Society, and sex crime ("the Curious Career and Untimely Death of Fritz Ulbrich").

Mel Gordon is professor of Theater at University of California, Berkeley, and also the author of Erik Jan Hanussen: Hitler's Jewish Clairvoyant (Feral House), and The Grand Guignol: Theatre of Fear and Terror (DaCapo).

5 out of 5 stars Voluptuous Panic by Mel Gordon.......2007-07-06

Excellent book, which had lots of information regarding Berlin, Germany in the wild 20s. I only wish there was more in depth material to read and more photo's. Especially interesting was the "Occult" section, which could have had a more in depth coverage, but I'm not complaining. Dietrich Eckhart, who belonged to a number of Occult Societies introduced Hitler to Ernst Rohm The Criminal Elements or crime section was also heady. Overall, well put together and very interesting. I think including the individuals and activies of some subversive groups in Berlin at the time would have been helpful in understanding the rise of Naziasm in the 20's. I understand there were a number of "White Russian" exiles that supported Hitler's cause.

      4 out of 5 stars explosive!.......2007-05-11

voluptuous panic is a great title. it's an even greater resource of smut, art nudes, photos of cabaret artists from weimar berlin.

      and there's text, too!

if someone is going to do 'cabaret' send them here for ideas for set decorations, costume ideas and makeup tips for the kit-kat girls. then look at what others did with information like this because this should be one of the primary sources in re-enlivining that crazy, mad and very short period.

4 out of 5 stars a horrifying and unprecedented view of pre-nazi berlin.......2007-03-18

I suppose there is the inherent interest and entertainment of antique hardcore erotica for some people, which this book provides, but the things depicted (photographically) and described in this book may completely alter your view of the past.

I guess it is known that Berlin, prior to the rise of the nazis, was a decadant, burlesque place. But the variety and pervasiveness... and SEVERITY of this is not commonly known. In this book you will see gay nomadic boy scouts, theatrical spanking machines, nudist priests, gleefuly incestuous families (depicted in lifestyle journals for apparent mass consumption) and manuals of dentist chair molestation. It really is shocking - and all the more when you recognize these images as decisively in the past, and apparently NORMAL for this time period.

I used to look through this book whenever i went to this bookstore in 2000-2001, mostly browsing and skimming. It made a lasting impression and i have never been able to find similar information elsewhere. According to some of the reviews I've read, the author makes an unsubstantiated claim/conclusion that this period ended not because of social outrage or exhaustion, but because of particular economic and political circumstances. But for myself, foreign to this place and time (and culture), it completely changes my picture of germany, world war ii and modernity. Apparently there were sprawling nihilist fiends BEFORE mankind was confronted with the possability of nuclear annihilation.

I personally consider this a "coffee table book", albeit for S&M yuppies. It is way too flashy and consumable for research purposes. (I would hesitate to site it as a source for any paper.) However, as far as I can tell, it is one of the only accessable documentations of ...something I can't believe I've never heard of.

5 out of 5 stars Weimar Berlin Is *ALIVE* and Electric!.......2006-07-26

This *is* the most comprehensive book about Weimar Berlin on the market. Full of never before seen pictures, illustrations, and information, this book is what any Deco era enthusiast needs. Mel Gordon's text is anything but dry, stuffy, or overly scholarly as these books can tend to be. No, instead, his enthusiasm and interests spill onto each page, electrify in a sence with his tell-tale approach and overwhelming details about Pre-War Weimar Berlin's enigmatic history. If Neo-Weimar studies are your cup of tea, then this book is the "on the rocks", "straight up", cold hard shot of gin! I recomend the 5th Edition (2006 Version) hardback that includes the original 2 sections that are omitted in the first few before it. The replaced sections are wonderful and if you've seen the book before, you will be quick to notice that Gordon has added *more* pictures and has corrected the color on the illustrations and paintings. In short, Mr. Gordon's work is quite simply the *ONLY* work out there worth reading about this subject. A UC Berkeley professor, accomplished writer of several books, and former New York Actor's Studio alumni how can one argue that his writings and lectures are not the most dead on and most effective out there? See him lecture, read his work, and keep tabs on this history agent provocateur; he is the future of our unique artistic and often risqué past. - Amanda Campa (of The Art Deco Society Of California)

5 out of 5 stars Picture book for very decadent children.......2002-08-11

In glorious black-and-white pictures and color plates, Mel Gordon illustrates the splendour that was Weimar Berlin. This book is necessary for any uppity later generations who thought they came up with nightlife, sex and provocation.

I throughly enjoyed this book and it opened my eyes to the simplicity of this art.

      1 out of 5 stars LAME.......2006-03-07

Do not buy this book. Unless you need to be able to laugh about your inability to "talk dirty" with your partner. This book was a complete and total waste of time and money.

4 out of 5 stars Tell it like it is!.......2002-10-23

I admire this author's willingness to explore the taboo subject of dirty talk, no matter how embarrassing and finicky it may seem to some people. I found myself nodding in agreement at society's timid approach to verbal stimulation during intimacy. The Fine Art of Erotic Talk is a great beginner's guidebook on how to express yourself verbally in bed. I was duly impressed with this book.

3 out of 5 stars Great for beginners........1999-07-10

This book gives a very good starting point for couples who are new at erotic talk. Those readers who have already tried this form of communication should probably pass on this selection. It's definitely a beginner's manual.

      5 out of 5 stars If you're a verbal type, this book's for you!.......1999-04-06

I think the author could probably get me off just by talking to me. What a wonderful thing that is!

Before I got to this book, I was initiated into the realm of auditory pleasure through phone sex with women I'd met in chat rooms. That went shockingly well for me. It taught me a lot about honesty.

      I treasure this book.

        Book Description

This debate-style reader is designed to introduce students to controversies in gender studies. The readings, which represent the arguments of leading psychologists and other social commentators, reflect a variety of viewpoints and have been selected for their liveliness and substance and because of their value in a debate framework. Students will be exposed to a rich, exciting, and emotionally and politically charged body of theory, research, and practice. TAKING SIDES: GENDER, containing 20 issues organized into six parts, presents hotly debated issues in contemporary scholarly and public discourse. Students will actively develop critical thinking skills by analyzing opposing viewpoints and reach considered judgments. The issues will challenge students to consider what is sex, what is gender, and when is either relevant, and why. They will discover that what might appear to be binary, biologically based distinction is so much more.

An Instructor's Manual accompanies the book. For each issue, the following have been provided: a synopsis of each author's position on the issue, teaching suggestions, and multiple-choice and essay questions. The teaching hints consist of suggestions for generating class discussion around the themes raised by the clashing essays.

2 out of 5 stars Not the book for me.......2007-09-18

I didn't like the book. I had to read it for class. It was interesting to read, but she put so much facts in there that I couldn't remember everything that she said. It needs to be more oraganized and maybe less man biased like the other two men said. Before bashing me or my review, I'm a woman.

Edit: I put two stars, but I meant one, I changed my mind.

        1 out of 5 stars Propaganda.......2006-06-24

While I don't doubt the author's intentions weren't honestly good, the prescence of society influenced bias is ever present.

Just to point out a lone example from the first chapter, "In general, African American women are more assertive than European American women, and African American men tend to be more communal than White men".

Notice how she cares to use extensive titles for women and African American men, but when she discusses European American males we are merely "White" males. So much for an unbiased presentaton :)

1 out of 5 stars Man Haters handbook.......2004-07-18

Julia Wood takes every chance she can to insult and denigrate men. In fact, the only men she will acknowledge in a positive way are those who have distinctly "feminine" traits. Many feminists may find this refreshing and validating, but it does little to foster better communication or interaction with members of the opposite sex. Wood is guilty of the same spiteful attacks on men that she portrays as happening to women.

        5 out of 5 stars A Great, Non-Stereotypical Feminist Book.......2004-04-27

Having read way too many textbooks in my academic career, I feel pretty confident saying that this is one of the best. The author presented the material (some of it difficult to swallow) in a straight-forward way, interjecting much-needed humor here and there. Many different viewpoints are addressed, and comments from other students, from a wide variety of walks of life are included, giving the reader exposure to a wide variety of thoughts and opinions.
The text reads quickly, and a lot of territory is covered. The author addresses everything from the various 'waves' of feminism to media coverage and violence. There is a lot of material in the book, and if it is read with an open mind, I don't see how the reader can help but be moved and possibly changed. There is no one that this book won't relate to - everyone has a gender.

4 out of 5 stars Gendered Lives is a good read.......2004-04-22

I was assigned this book for my Gender, Race and Class class but I enjoyed it so much that I am not selling it back! I found standpoint theory helpful as I try to figure out where I stand in the world of feminism. As a minority, I liked reading about different cultures. So many textbooks are White. But this one wasn't. It was refreshing.
