Book Description
The quality of expressiveness--an outcry of the human soul against the mechanization of life--runs like a red scar through the entire history of modern art and up to the present day. If expressionism is associated first and foremost with the German contribution to Modernism, evoking the artists associated with Die Brcke (Kirchner, Heckel and Nolde) and Der Blaue Reiter (Marc and Kandinsky), but also the Austrian Schiele and Kokoshka, and the Parisian fauves, it nevertheless goes further. Beginning with the fathers of expressionism, Gauguin, van Gogh and Munch, the most important inspirations for a movement laden with emotions and endowed with the furor of rebellion, the red scar bleeds through the expressive tendencies of the interwar artists (Beckmann, Soutine and Picasso) and the postwar artists (Dubuffet, de Kooning and Bacon), and all the way to neo-expressionism (Baselitz, Lpertz, Lassnig) and 80s neo-fauvism (Clemente, Basquiat and Disler), ending with Louise Bourgeois and Bruce Nauman. In accompanying essays, philosopher and art historian Donald Kuspit sets out to trace the meaning of the term "expressive"; curator Markus Brderlin explores expressionism by looking backwards from neo-expressionism; and numerous short texts round off the exploration by focusing on individual works of art.

Another equisite title to accompany a Fondation Beyeler exhibition!.......2005-08-16
The color reproductions are excellent, detailed text is easily read without flipping back and forth between pages, the scholarship is fine, and the book makes an excellent addition to current thoughts on expressionism. Plus, Amazon.com's discounts on fine art books are truly important in helping one build a great art library!

This beautiful volume ffers revelatory insights into the nature of Schiele's genius, while clarifying his vision and artistic impulses.
Customer Reviews:
an amazing book.......2007-01-12
Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates Egon Schiele, especially his drawings. The absolute gem in this volume is an essay "My journey with Egon Schiele" by his friend the collector Heinrich Benesch, which offers many wonderful insights into Schiele's personality.
Book Description
Austrian Expressionist Egon Schiele produced a prolific body of work before his early death at the age of twenty-eight in 1918. The oeuvre is comprised of a few hundred oil paintings and thousands of drawings and watercolors.
Schiele's oils have often been reproduced and are well recognized. However, limited access to the fragile works on paper and dispersion among several collections have made for an unbalanced representation of his work as a draftsman.
This book assembles drawings and watercolors from public and private collections and reproduces work from every year of the artist's career, beginning with the juvenilia and early academic studies. The focus means that work that is rarely reproduced is represented extensively, providing a unique opportunity to study the rapid artistic development of Schiele over the course of his brief twelve-year career.
The book is organized chronologically and divided into year-by-year sections. Each section includes a text that discusses the major events in Schiele's life and the interrelation between the artist's drawing and developments in his oil painting. Features a previously unpublished Schiele watercolor and several works that have never been reproduced in color. Over 350 color illustrations.

Amazing.......2007-05-07
As an owner of many art books, this one is in the top 20 favorites just because of the quality of the item. The quality of the reproductions, the number of reproductions and the price cannot be beat. This publisher has really put out some nice art books. Lets hope there is more to come!
A unique book.......2007-04-07
This is a book that gives the reader a unique opportunity to discover Schiele's art through his works on paper (which, in my opinion, convey a much better idea of the importance of this artist than his paintings). There is a lightness in these works, and, at the same time an urge to express the uneasiness, the anguish that the artist feels towards the outside world, that is very well shown in the book, through countless high-quality reproductions. The text is very sensible and written by the leading authority on Egon Schiele.
Highly recommended.
Shows Schiele's Progression as an Artist.......2006-01-31
There are three things that I liked about this book: (1) great art well reproduced. The colors are well saturated and vibrant. (2) Each section begins with a brief history of the artist's life and points out how his work changed (or didn't) during that period in his life. (3) There are enough illustrations so that you can truly observe his progression and maturation as an artist.
Schiele was clearly enamored by the human figure and he captured its allure and beauty as few have. This is an excellent art book that is also well priced. Highly recommended.
Egon Shiele: the book to own if you only want one.......2004-10-09
Jane Kallir (also the author of Egon Schiele's 'catalogue raisonne' -- usually a HUGE expensive book which includes a picture of every known available representation of an artist's work) says 'Since completing the catalogue raisonne, I have always yearned to combine the story of Schiele's life and his artistic development into a single book'. And wow, what a beautiful job she has done.
This book begins with some of the earliest pictures of Egon's art (when he was about 16 and drawing trains) and ends with a picture of his wife (12 years later -- drawn not long before both she and Schiele died during the flu epidemic which swept the globe following World War I).
What makes this book extraordinary is the showcase of over 300 excellent color reproductions of Schiele's art shown in chronological order and Kallir's insightful commentary on the 'nuances of Schiele's stylistic development during each 12 month period'.
To paraphrase the author (again), this is Schiele's unique 'coming of age' story -- 'in these works, we watch Schiele literally grow up, almost day by day -- an artist with the technical virtuosity to express those experiences as they were happening'.
And to sum up, I borrowed this book from the library and found the book so awesome that I ordered my own copy from amazon.com before I finished reading it -- and now that I have finished reading the book, I'm taking the time to say, this is the most unique (and moving) art book (I'm guessing I've read 200) I've ever read.
494 pages of slick paper, small print, outstanding pictures.......2004-08-17
Drawings can be interesting when they are just bits and pieces, and the rest of the picture is left to the imagination, as colored crayon and charcoal on a rough tan piece of paper (40.2 x 29.7 cm. Kallir D. 344) shows mainly a face and hand appearing on the left side of page 62 far above striped trousers in `Man with headband and Hand on Cheek (Self-Portrait) 1909.' A tiny patch of blue marks the edge of the sleeve just below the hand, and another tiny patch of blue is at the end of the outline of the other sleeve, just in front of the trousers, but the lines between the patches are faint, don't intersect, and imply that his stomach was flat as a board.
Some interesting paper that is slightly more yellow and larger isn't big enough to show the top of his hair, his left hand, or anything below his hips in `Self-Portrait with Arm Twisting Above Head 1910' on pages 4 and 111. One of my favorite Egon Schiele paintings, `Self-Portrait with Hand to Cheek 1910' is shown on page 115. He is pulling his cheek down so hard on one side that his other ear sticks out. Another favorite is `Schiele, Drawing a Nude Model Before a Mirror 1910' on page 135 which clearly shows the model's eyes watching herself in the mirror, while the artist's eyes, looking at himself, are so dark it seems like he can see you. For a drawing done with a pencil, it establishes a perspective that shows great depth, even if one of the model's arms is missing where it approaches the edge of the paper or failed to line up with the rest of the picture.
The picture on the cover is similar to many in the book; a few extra lines and colors don't stay within the outline. `The Artist's Sister-in-Law in Striped Dress, Seated 1917' on page 402 shows stripes over her shoulders and running out from her hips, but the area around her hands is mainly blank. The color of the paper works well for her chin and neck, and the darker paper on page 403, on which she is `Covering Mouth with Hands 1917' is a nice comparison, in which Schiele had a different angle to attempt to capture the chaos in her hair.
The author of this book knows a lot about the art and life of Egon Schiele and the artists that he associated with. The chronological order of the pictures does emphasize the sequence, but almost everything falls in the years 1907 to 1918, and his subjects didn't vary much. `The Truth Unveiled 1913' on page 265 could be called a portrait of the artist contemplating his hands, or you didn't expect me to name this for the woman hiding behind me, did you? I might like these paintings more than I should because I appreciate certain events in the life of the artist, who was so frail that he did not get sent to basic training and guard duty for the great war until June 27, 1915 (p. 326). When he had sick leave in Vienna, he painted a portrait of his wife (p. 327). He changed. `As documented in his work from 1914-15, the transition between these two worlds had been extraordinarily painful for the artist. . . . Like all young boys, he had to grow up.' (p. 328).
Book Description
An intimate look at the erotic studies and paintings of a controversial artist whose works continues to provoke even today.
Schiele's fiercely drawn lines and confrontational compositions command our attention. His erotic art, most of all, evokes feelings of discomfort, titillation, curiosity, and even repulsion, and yet bears testimony to his talent and passion. This beautifully crafted collection of erotic masterpieces showcases the themes Schiele wove into all of his work: a fascination with the human psyche and sexuality, a desire to destroy the conservative facade of moral righteousness and expose the inner truth. Designed to resemble an artist's sketchbook, this book offers viewers a chance to gain a better understanding of the technique and vision of this revolutionary painter.

Book Description
The meaning of portraiture in the egocentric and erotic culture of Vienna at the end of the Hapsburg Empire frames Alessandra Comini's definitive, lavishly illustrated study of the art of Egon Schiele (1890-1918), first published in 1975 and now available in paperback with a new preface and updated bibliography. Comini analyzes Schiele's work in the context of Viennese Expressionism, rising existential consciousness, and the unique ambiance of Vienna. The human figure forms the most compelling motif in Schiele's oeuvre, which is comprised of hundreds of oils and thousands of drawings. Numerous self-portraits record emotional states, reflect major stylistic changes, and provide a brilliant focus for this examination of his art and his life.
Customer Reviews:
Perhaps the finest source of information on Egon Schiele.......2006-02-05
Alessandra Comini has published more books and catalogues on the art and life of Austrian artist Egon Schiele than any other writer. The personal favorite of this reader has been the succinct but intensely informative and visually documented 1976 volume simply titled EGON SCHIELE, but sadly that is out of print. But those who are absorbed by the idiosyncratic work of the artist of both bizarre life and bizarre paintings may rest assured that this large volume contains not only most of the information Comini has contributed tot he world literature, but also adds the bonus of a very close examination of the Portraits.
For Schiele nearly all of his paintings (with the possible exception of his gorgeously bleak landscapes) were portraits, whether named as such or no. But Schiele's eye was focused on the raw psyche Freud was unveiling and his preoccupation with the sensual, the erotic, and the dark dies of this subjects is what makes them unique. Schiele was a tortured man, not only from his own strident personal issues, but also form the public response to his art. An outcast, he never stopped painting the prepubescent girls he entertained in his studio, nor did he ever tire of his self portraits, works that range from the most savagely aroused eroticism to the frightened eyes of a man at odds with the art world and indeed with the world at large.
Comini suffuses this superb array of reproductions of Schiele's genius with straight forward, authoritative, non-judgmental and even adoration writing. The symbols and body gestures of his models are investigated and examined and explained. Comini is an art scholar but she writes with a style that reads like a novel. For those looking for a definitive basis of work on the art of Egon Schiele this volume is a fine starting point. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, February 06
Book Description
Egon Schiele (1890-1918) was one of the most influential and popular painters to emerge from the cultural ferment that characterized Vienna at the turn of the century. Yet despite the appreciation of his art, the "real" Egon Schiele has remained elusive. This biography, first published together with Abrams' catalogue raisonné of Schiele's work, offers fascinating insights into the artist's brief and sometimes troubled life.
Basing her text chiefly on firsthand sources, many of them previously unpublished, Schiele expert Jane Kallir provides a vibrant account of the artist's childhood and early adulthood, his turbulent encounters with Vienna's patron class, his sexual escapades and imprisonment on a morals charge, his ultimately disappointing marriage, and his premature death at the age of 28. Interwoven with the story of the artist's life is a balanced presentation of his art-the mature and relatively placid pieces together with the turbulent Expressionist work-lavishly illustrated with 94 full-color illustrations and 107 duotone plates. Printed on extra-fine paper with extraordinary reproductions, this beautiful volume stands as the definitive biography of Schiele the man and the artist.
Customer Reviews:
The definite sum on Egon Schiele.......2007-04-07
If, like me, you like Egon Schiele, this is the definite work on this great artist. Jane Kallir, through her gallery Saint Etienne, has been the leading authority on Schiele in the United States for many years, and her text is an irreplaceable contribution to the understanding of his oeuvre. As far as I know, this is the best book available on the artist and, unless you have a Schiele drawing hanging over your bed, or a painting by him hanging in your living room, there is no better way to enter his world than to open and savor this wonderful art book.
Beautiful.......2004-01-17
Great buy--Just trust me. If you like his work--you will have much to indulge in. Ah Schiele--the original tortured artist--"In the name of art I will endure to the end!"
Book Description
Breathtaking paintings and drawings from the Neue Galerie New York, which holds the largest collection of works by Egon Schiele in any American public museum, are included in this sumptuously illustrated book.
Austrian Expressionist painter Egon Schiele was one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century. While his explicit nudes and self-portraits created controversy in Europe and America, his skill as a draftsman and his artistic passion are unquestionable. In addition to presenting superb reproductions of more than 150 paintings and drawings in the collection, this monograph traces the history of Schiele's reception in the American art world. It offers fascinating background information concerning Schiele collectors, promoters, critics, and followers, as well as the exhibitions, public acquisitions, publications, and other projects relating to the artist that have taken place in the United States. Essays pertaining to Schiele's life in Austria, the lost Schiele collections, and the censorship of the artist during and after his lifetime round out this stunning volume.
Customer Reviews:
Absolute Eye Candy.......2006-04-19
If you are buying this book because you are an artist or an art student and you really like Egon's art...you are going to love this book! The quality of the illustrations are excellent. They are large and the color is perfect. If you want eye candy more than something to read, again this book is perfect. I thought the book contained just enough text to make you knowledgeable but left lots of room for really nice photographic material.

Customer Reviews:
Black and White?.......2007-03-03
This book is great for the $7 price, just let me preface with that remark. The book is also of a pretty good size.
On the downside, and this is a big one for me- There are more than just drawings in this book. Many of the works are drawings with Gouache and Watercolor, and are still printed in black and white. While all the works print up okay in black and white, with little loss as to the line work, the fact that the originals are in color makes me a little sad.
If you are interested at all in any more than the line quality of Schiele's works, get one of the more expensive collections of his works, which include color plates.
cheap........1999-01-18
dover art library books are a great way to get copies of master drawings...cheap. all prints are in b/w and print quailty isn't the best...but for the price they are a great unprecious alternative to the glove wearing 60$ art book.
