Good book, has great examples and the definitions are not that hard to understand. Ideal for any artist or reader that is interested in ART

5 out of 5 stars Great Guide to the Process of Drawing.......2005-07-19

This book is an excellent resource. It is very clear and the examples are really very helpful. If you are a beginner or an artist of years, there is very much to learn from this book. The text does offer some excercises, but it's greater strength is from the explanation of processes. The book doesn't play out as an analysis of art pieces, but describes the process of creating an expressive and cohesive work in pretty much any style of drawing. It tells you how to practice and what to look for in a subject and in your drawing. This was the textbook we used in my drawing classes and it has been an invaluable resource since then.

This book will help you find ideas and transfer them into your unique art.

4 out of 5 stars well written, well illustrated.......2001-08-17

While giving clear 'how to' instructions for those beginning drawing, this book treats drawing in a much broader way than simply the realistic rendering of the visual world. It's well written and illustrated with works by a good range of contemporary artists. As an art college lecturer I find this book very useful as a resource for both myself and my students.

Book Description

One hundred political cartoons you wanted to see, but weren't allowed to: all were banned for being too hot to handle.

Think you live in a society with a free press? These celebrated cartoonists and illustrators found out otherwise. Whether blasting Bush for his "Bring 'em on!" speech, spanking pedophile priests, questioning capital punishment, debating the disputed 2000 election, or just mocking baseball mascots, they learned that newspapers and magazines increasingly play it safe by suppressing satire.

With censored cartoons, many unpublished, by the likes of Garry Trudeau, Doug Marlette, Paul Conrad, Mike Luckovich, Matt Davies, and Ted Rall (all Pulitzer Prize winners or finalists), as well as unearthed editorial illustrations by Norman Rockwell, Edward Sorel, Anita Kunz, Marshall Arisman, and Steve Brodner, you will find yourself surprised and often shocked by the images themselves—and outraged by the fact that a fearful editor kept you from seeing them. Needed now more than ever because of a neutered press that's more lapdog than watchdog, Killed Cartoons will make you laugh, make you angry, and make you think. 100 illustrations.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Antidote to editorial timidity .......2007-05-30

If you're disheartened by pusillanimous publishers who lack the sand to back up their writers and cartoonists when they come up with controversial material, David Wallis is your man. In his previous work, "Killed: Great Journalism Too Hot To Print," he championed journalists whose articles were decommissioned by their fearful overseers; now in KILLED CARTOONS he's back with a book that does the same for editorial cartoonists. Clever, thoughtful, and brave.

4 out of 5 stars Kartoons that did not see print.......2007-05-13

What a shame these weren't printed. All were to the point, and pertinant.

2 out of 5 stars Wrong choice.......2007-05-13

The Book was good enough it just wasnt quit what I was looking foward to

5 out of 5 stars Funny, but you don't want to laugh.......2007-04-28

I enjoyed KILLED CARTOONS immensely. The work illustrates beautifully why political cartoons are important. (And why they're capable of generating real controversy.) What Wallis understands is that cartoons have a contradictory function. One the one hand they have to amuse the reader, and on the other, they have to upset his/her equilibrium--ideally to the boiling point. Cartoons reach us on a visceral level, which is why I found Wallis' commentary (captions, if you will) a perfect complement to them. Wallis is a witty intelligent and apparently well-informed writer. This book came to me as a gift, I just bought his KILLED: Journalism To Hot to Print, with my own money.

2 out of 5 stars Understand what you're getting.......2007-04-21

For the right audience, I'm sure this is a fine work. I was not the right audience. I wanted a book that presented the cartoons, with perhaps minimal commentary, and let me decide for myself. Instead, this provides pages of commentary and, actually, very few cartoons (94 in its 282 pages - I counted). If you're looking for a treatise on the myth of freedom of the press, using a few cartoons as case studies, then by all means look at this book. Just know what it is you are buying, and know that less than a third of the pages in the book actually show the "Killed Cartoons" that the title promises.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A "must" for any non-native business English learner.......2007-09-06

Although many of the idioms and expressions Ms. Gillett brings to the page are typical in non-business usage, the huge number of idioms and expressions related to American business English (as opposed to British business English--in some cases they are quite different!) is an asset to any student of this subject.
The contents are grouped in chapters by common subject, e.g. Discussing a New Ad Campaign, Motivating A Co-Woker, and Conducting a Performance Review. Learning new idioms and expressions is made simple by an easy-to-read dialog that demonstrates (and can be used with a partner) the usage of each idiom, and then is followed by self- or partnered-checking and review. The accompanying CD clarifies pronunciation, rhythm, and intonation.

I highly recommend this text to all--native or non-native speakers of English--who want to fast-track themselves into usage of the American business vernacular.

My qualifications to review this book? I teach this subject, among others, at UCSC Extension.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book for improving business English.......2006-06-29

I used this book and CD system with my students, a group of adults in an ESL class at a community college. They really enjoyed it! They found the dialogues interesting and realistic. The idioms in this book are excellent. The exercises are helpful too, and we appreciated being able to go to the publisher's website (Language Success Press) and getting supplementary exercises for this book for free.

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate instructive guide to the hundreds of expressions and idioms heard at the workplace daily.......2006-03-09

Enhanced with the addition of an audio CD, Speak Business Like An American is the ultimate instructive guide to the hundreds of expressions and idioms heard at the workplace daily. Amy Gillet's provides the language student wanting to gain fluency in doing business in the American marketplace with consistent, easy to use constructs that are accurate, appropriate, and effective. Speak Business English Like An American is very highly recommended for those new to the business workplace and in need of being able to communicate fluently in standard American English.

5 out of 5 stars Great information........2006-12-09

For someone totally new to encaustic, this book is great! I am interested in encaustic painting and this book gave me tons of technical information regarding materials--wax, pigments, brushes, heat guns, etc. Additionally, it shows many different expressions in encaustic art: abstract paintings, representational paintings, sculptures....This book does not teach one HOW to paint, rather it highlights the materials and examples of encaustic works. This is a very informative, enjoyable book.

5 out of 5 stars Great place to start exploring.......2006-06-15

This is a great introduction to the medium. I've painted with acrylics for a few years and wanted to experiment with encaustic. Mattera gives a simple but thorough overview of encaustic. After reading this book I felt I had the basic knowledge I needed to start and it has continued to guide and inspire my exploration. I definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in painting with wax.

5 out of 5 stars The Art of Encaustic Painting.......2006-02-06

I think the book is really great. It's not one of those books that takes you steep by steep through the proces of Encaustic painting but gigves you just a enought to venture out on your own. It's a book that I go back to quite offen to get my creative juices going.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book for Fascinating Art Medium.......2006-01-16

Joanne Mattera has written a comprehensive volume about my favorite medium, encaustic painting. She details the history of the art, as well as current artists using the medium. Perfect for beginners in encaustic, as complete instructions on melting, mixing, fusing, tools, safety issues, as well as how to build substrates, are given.

5 out of 5 stars The Art of Encaustic Painting.......2005-09-04

Very informative and inspirational.
As a novice artist it really put me into the perspective of
experimenting with encaustic in the near future.

Book Description

No other volume has ever presented such a diverse and captivating collection of contemporary animal-themed ceramics. Juried by distinguished artist and educator Joe Bova, this magnificent gallery includes pieces from an international group of artists; the beautifully crafted works range from the representational to the abstract, from artful realism to provocative surrealism (including animal-human hybrids). Ann Marais’ image of a waterfowl painted onto a porcelain dish has a restrained, Asian quality. Sharkus’ painted and smoke-fired stoneware turtle could easily be mistaken for the living creature. Bova provides astute and illuminating commentary overall, with selected artists’ notes.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars 500 animals in clay.......2007-08-28

Without being able to review the book beforehand, I was disappointed that the figures were so very complex. I had hoped that judging from the cover bunny that they may match my elementary start at sculping simple clay figures.

5 out of 5 stars Not zoology 101...........2007-08-26

I work in ceramic materials, and this book has to be right beside 500 figures as my 2 very favorite books from lark. I am not bothered by the lack of technical information, usually if one has been working in ceramics for a while, it is pretty easy to see what the artist used, and the book does provide descriptions in glazing methods and clay bodies!
Mostly, I found this book a hoot in seeing how other artist view critters, the artistic interpretation is amazing, and often very humorous! Again, I took my copy to the shared studio I work in, and everyone was spellbound at the variety of works...My copy is getting a bit dusy now...I might order a second one, and give my old one to the studio library...

5 out of 5 stars Great inspirational book.......2007-05-20

As a potter, I love books like this just as much as those with more technical information. I turn to them over and over when the muse is taking a little siesta. Tons of great ideas here for everyone, no matter what your style.

5 out of 5 stars 500 Animals in Clay: Contemporary Expressions of the Animal Form.......2007-01-15

Like all the 500 Lark books this one has beautiful photographs and lots of inspiration. If you are an animal lover, and ceramist, like I am you will love it. I would like a little more information about how the pieces are created, but that is rarely the case with these books - still well worth the price.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Facial Expressions.......2007-09-29

This is a wonderful resource for artists. It offers a variety of models with a wide range of expressions. I Highly reccommend it.

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTE NECESSITY!.......2007-09-19

I just recently started creating a webcomic and I never could have done it without this book. The expressions range from highly exaggerated to more subtle and, I promise you, will work for almost any expression you want to create. Also, many expressions are shot at multiple angles, making it much easier for me to create the exact image I am thinking of. Perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for drawing comics.......2007-08-23

I'd used this book often when drawing my manga. However do note that the facial expressions are mostly very exaggerated. When drawing my characters talking or just a gentle smile, I could not find reference from there.I'd to use a mirror. I hope there's a volume two with two people interacting with each other and different camera angles.

4 out of 5 stars Ummm a little disappointing great book.......2007-07-16

I think it's the only book right now which has addressed reference material for facial expressions. It's really useful, but professionals may get disappointed with the quality of some pictures and blurriness. It's not that all pictures are bad quality, but when you have such an amazing reference you ought to expect a lot and that's where this book is disappointing. But for sure this book will be useful for all beginners and probably higher level artists. For this price don't hesitate to buy if you really want a reference for facial expressions. Some people may not like the quality of the paper, but I think you should also consider the price.

4 out of 5 stars good drawing book.......2007-07-05

i thought the book was something different from what i ordered. but i guess its good for artists

5 out of 5 stars iI cannot put down that book!!!.......2007-03-25

I have bought this book as an introduction to altered books and since then I cannot put it down. It is true that people who are experienced in the art of altering books may find it a little limited. But Bev Brazelton is such a talented artist! It is a yummy book for the eyes!
The book itself is devided is different parts showing different techniques from the most elementary ones to the more elaborated ones.
    I truly recommand this book.
    It is so inspiring!

    4 out of 5 stars Good beginner hands-on book.......2007-02-19

I've done almost no altered-book work, and I've done a bit more collage. I took this book out of the library as part of some research into paper art techniques.

This book's organization is straightforward. Brazelton starts by explaining the basic materials and supplies used, in an organized and detailed fashion, and then teaches one specific technique at a time. This method seems good for people who know very little about the art and like to learn by working hands-on with a specific set of instructions. The author is very encouraging.

A couple of minor criticisms: My enjoyment of the book was marred a bit because I just don't like the author's artistic style very much. I also found it irritating that Brazelton used the same basic approach over and over (multiple layers of color washes) on each segment. I wish the author had added at least a few photos of other artist's works so I could see some other ways to approach altered books.

    5 out of 5 stars Nice.......2007-02-16

This book is an awesome purchase for someone interested in learning about altered books. Detailed, good examples, techniques. Good choice.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great List of Words.......2007-10-01

This book contains many lists of words in an organized way for helping writers choose the right phrase or word for transitioning thoughts in writing. An excellent resource.

    5 out of 5 stars A handy, easy-to-use daily reference.......2007-07-20

Transition words and phrases are one of the areas where writers often get into ruts -- but not after you add this handy little reference to your desk! The book contains word lists based on the content of the transition, which, along with a thumb-tab page design, makes it easy to find an alternative phrasing. And if you often write articles or other materials that present quotes from sources, the book is worth the price just for its list of substitutes for the word "said." I know this is a reference I will use daily.

    5 out of 5 stars a handy tool.......2006-01-23

I've used this guide since 1990, when I came across a copy in a Honolulu bookstore. How nice to see it's available through Amazon. I recommend it highly to other professional writers. Students will find it useful, too.

5 out of 5 stars Enthusiastically recommended reference for writers........2002-03-29

A Writer's Guide To Transitional Words And Expressions by Victor Pellegrino is a very specific and highly useful reference for writers of all ages and skill levels, ranging from novelists to journalists. It is quite simply a collection of lists of English words and phrases. Each list is offered as an effective verbal transition mechanism for authors seeking the best phrase "To Indicate Time Order," "To Indicate a Sequence," "To Emphasize or Intensify," "To Substitute for 'Said'" and a dozen other lists. Perhaps most useful is A Writer's Guide To Transitional Words' unusual format layout, which makes an index tab for each list instantly visible upon opening to any page - which in turn makes finding the list one wants to consult a supremely quick and easy process. A Writer's Guide To Transitional Words is an enthusiastically recommended reference for professional writers of all walks, since the type of phrases it presents are not ones that are quite so easily gleaned from a common thesaurus. Also highly recommended is Victor Pellegrino's companion book A Writer's Guide To Using Eight Methods Of Transition.
