Book Description

How do the arts stack up as a major discipline? What is their effect on the brain, learning, and human development? How might schools best implement and assess an arts program?? Eric Jensen answers these questions C and more C in this book. To push for higher standards of learning, many policymakers are eliminating arts programs. To Jensen, that's a mistake.

This book presents the definitive case, based on what we know about the brain and learning, for making arts a core part of the basic curriculum and thoughtfully integrating them into every subject. Separate chapters address musical, visual, and kinesthetic arts in ways that reveal their influence on learning.

What are the effects of a fully implemented arts program? The evidence points to the following:

$ Fewer dropouts $ Higher attendance $ Better team players $ An increased love of learning $ Greater student dignity $ Enhanced creativity $ A more prepared citizen for the workplace of tomorrow $ Greater cultural awareness as a bonus

To Jensen, it's not a matter of choosing, say, the musical arts over the kinesthetic. Rather, ask what kind of art makes sense for what purposes. How much time per day? What kind of music? Should the arts be required? How do we assess arts programs? In answering these real-world questions, Jensen provides dozens of practical, detailed suggestions for incorporating the arts into every classroom.

3 out of 5 stars Educational.......2007-03-07

Well, there was some things in there that were informative, the reading was clear. A bit boring and some what common sense stuff. I guess when I was reading it I felt like I was reading stuff I already knew, yet I never read about before. I don't know... you be the judge.

5 out of 5 stars If Think the Arts don't matter in school? You better think again!.......2006-05-28

If you think the Arts don't matter anymore, I'm here to tell you to THINK again.

As a second grade teacher I find Jensen's work a must-read for every parent and educator. The Arts really do play an important part in education; whether the Arts fall under musical, visual, or in kinesthetic. The Arts will enhances the neurobiological system (Jensen, 2001, p. 116) or the brain, increasing a healthy responsive learning environment to other disciplines/subjects that are outside of the Arts.

Jenson discussed in-depth how each of the three Arts are important and why they should be part of every school's curriculum.

Simply a great book!

4 out of 5 stars A leading path.......2005-10-23

With a sometimes harsh style sometimes subjective, Mr. Jensen provides us with a leading path to make a coherent relation between the brain an it's development and the education in arts. Not very detailed with the ideas and paradigms but effective to motivate our curiosity in the field. With the arts education in the middle of a crucial crisis in the U.S., the "new idea" (for the positivist people) of a direct effect of the arts education in the development of high cognitive skills, provide a solid fundamental for the importance of this matter. At least, is a very serious proposal, well supported by researchers in the field.

I enjoyed this book very much. I kept it on my coffee table and would color in it to relax. Now that each page is colored I have moved it to my bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice!.......2007-06-12

Out of the half dozen coloring books we bought last year this one was our favorite. Every design felt well thought out and was quite fun to color. My only complaint is that there weren't more pictures to color. This is well worth buying if you're looking for a challenge to your coloring skills.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!!! Thanks!!.......2007-01-25

This is a very unusal book,...I think I am going to really enjoy this one!!! Thanks again!!! Arcrystal

5 out of 5 stars Just do it!.......2007-01-13

The book sat around for awhile, the markers I used didn't work well with the paper. Then I started with colored pencils, now I'm addicted!

5 out of 5 stars Love It!.......2006-11-28

I ordered 6 coloring books on the same day, and out of all of them, this one IS my FAVORITE. The designs are more than meaningless geometric shapes. They're really pretty!! And the pages are nice and big, and you can tear them out!! So you don't have to worry about that annoying bump getting in the way when you're trying to color.

MAIN POINT the designs are pretty :) I recommend.

Book Description

This practical resource demonstrates how all clinicians can broaden and enhance their work with children by integrating drawing into therapy. The book enables therapists to address the multidimensional aspects of children's art without resorting to simplistic explanations. Approaching drawing as a springboard for communication and change, Malchiodi offers a wealth of guidelines for understanding the intricate messages embedded in children's drawings and in the art-making process itself. Topics covered include how to assist children in making art, what questions to ask and when, and how to motivate children who are initially resistant to drawing. Assimilating extensive research and clinical experience, the book includes over 100 examples of children's work.

5 out of 5 stars Art and Place Attachment.......2006-11-10

I found this book to be very helpful in understanding the symbolism of children's drawings. I am working on a PhD, with a focus on place attachment and children, and found loads of very useful information in this book for interpreting children's drawings about their homes, communities, etc. I am in the process of reading several books about children's drawings and how to interpret, but have found this one to be one of the most useful to date.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on children's drawings in the last decade.......2002-04-18

Bravo to this author for bringing together a wealth of material on children's drawings in a clear and readable way. Professionals as well as lay people will enjoy this book; I recommend it to parents also. Pictures are marvelous!

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2000-03-08

I have recently completed the book in question and found it extremely helpful. It provided the basics that I can build on to understand children's drawings and perhaps children in general. I,at least have a fundamental idea of what to look for and how to interpret what is presented to me by a child. This book will not make one an over night expert on children's drawing (that takes time) but it does provide simple and understandable direction.

It was cheap and brand new!

4 out of 5 stars good overview for beginners.......2000-07-04

boyd does a nice job of providing solid overviews of major crises that impact the lives of children, such as abuse, illness, divorce. however, the book doesn't provide in-depth coverage of any individual topic. for those just starting out, the book gives a good general idea of assessment, treatment planning, and some specific techniques for use with this population. however, for those with more advanced skills, the book falls short of providing information that will enhance practice. an excellent grad school textbook, or for those who lack experience with this population. the book does provide good tools for use in assessment, and does cover the assessment process in depth. the chapter on childhood bereavement is particularly good.

4 out of 5 stars good overview for new professionals.......2000-06-30

good general overview of how to treat children whove experienced a crisis. the material on assessment is very helpful and detailed. each chapter is writen by an expert in a particular area of childhood crisis. since the book covers so many potential sources of trauma, there isn't really as much in-depth coverage of each topic as i would've liked to see. the book seems to be geared more to entry level professionals than to those experienced in dealing with childhood crisis and trauma.

I purchased this book while in grad school because I had a difficult time developing my own ideas. I have to say that I still reference this book when I need a quick activity. Although the activities are designed for chlldren I have had great results tailoring them for adults and older adults. This can be a good basic resource to build on.

5 out of 5 stars A great companion.......2006-06-13

This book is a great companion to my psychotherapy treatment planner. Although I have worked in social service for many years I was new to clinical work with children and adolescents. The activities in this book helped the children that I work with open right up about their therapeutic issues, and gave great ideas of how to address them in a non-threatening way.

Excellent book! I am a doctoral student in Clinical Psychology just starting to work with children. This book is full of good ideas.

I have used this book for over two years now. The book comes with many great ideas for therapeutic interventions. However, many of the exercises suggest that you refer to certain stories or activity sheets that are not in this book. (You must purchase an additional book to use with this one.) I would have preferred if this book had clearly stated on the cover that it needs to be in conjunction with another one. I still have not found the other book that this one refers to!

Book Description

In this groundbreaking look at the future of education, game scientist David Williamson Shaffer offers a new and powerful way of looking at school, technology, and even thinking itself: a new model of education for a high-tech, digital world of global competition. How Computer Games Help Children Learn looks at how particular video and computer games can help teach our children and students to think like doctors, lawyers, engineers, urban planners, journalists, and other professionals. In the process, new "smart games" will give them the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in a changing world.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Concept of Games; needs more research.......2007-03-25

David Shaffer proposes here that we educate children by having them do the things adults do--only by simulating them in game form. This is an idea I haven't run across before, and I think it may have real merit.

I have a nine-year-old son who attends public school. His school spends a lot of money and effort on computer learning, but I have been frankly underwhelmed by the results. The educational software I've seen doesn't strike me as much of an advance over flash cards--just a lot more expensive. I consider myself generally a skeptic on the whole subject of computers in the classroom.

Shaffer's point is that not just any learning software will have educational benefits. The software must be a serious attempt to simulate the sort of tasks that adults do, such as running a business or designing a building. Shaffer calls these epistemic games. Shaffer's descriptions of some of these games do sound interesting, and he provides some evidence that children learn a lot from them. Shaffer's research seems to have dealt mainly with teenagers; his evidence for the benefits of these games seems much less solid for younger children.

I can't say that I'm convinced that computers in the classroom are worth the costs, but after reading Shaffer's book I'm willing to at least consider the idea. Shaffer may indeed have something here that could be a significant step forward in education.

That said, Shaffer's research strikes me as very preliminary. His studies involved only a few kids, who were far from randomly selected. The teachers were hand-picked, highly motivated, and interested in the subject they were teaching. The ratio of teachers to students was high, and the teachers put in a lot of effort. The kids were followed up for only a short time. This is a long way from being proof that the epistemic game concept works. In my opinion, it's very unlikely that conditions this favorable for learning could be maintained for large numbers of children for a long period at reasonable cost. Teachers putting in that kind of effort burn out quickly. Would epistemic games work with ordinary kids being taught by an ordinary teacher? Who knows? If this sounds like I'm being a bit of a sourpuss, the fact is that the history of education is absolutely replete with "reforms" that worked well with a few kids and a select group of teachers, but failed to improve education in the long term. American schools today are in very sad shape. Much of the blame for that goes to well-meaning educational reforms that were implemented too hastily, without evidence that they really improved educational outcomes for most children.

Overall, though, Shaffer's book is interesting and well worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars innovative play.......2007-01-25

In this book, Shaffer takes the conversation about games and their relevance to society in general, and for children's learning in particular, to a new level. In a world where standardized thinking is rapidly being encapsulated in machines or outsourced, he says, education ought to be about providing young people with opportunities to learn innovative ways of thinking.

Which is where computer games come in: these games "are significant because they let us think in new ways" (p.191).

While touring a variety of video and other games, the book is centrally concerned with a new kind of game called an "epistemic game." In these games, players physically take on professional roles, like that of an engineer or architect, and use computers (and mentors/peers) to identify and solve problems - to think - like professionals.

In each of its six chapters, the book explores a specific epistemic game, such as Digital Zoo (about engineering), through a particular professional dimension, such as the specific "Knowlege" or "Values" of an engineer. (Promising commercial games are discussed along similar lines at the end of each chapter as well.) As a result, the book moves easily back and forth between personal stories and impressive studies, helping readers connect solid research on game playing with important learning theories.

This book is a must read for anyone interested in games, learning, and compelling visions for how to transform education.

5 out of 5 stars A better way to teach today's kids... and then some........2007-01-11

Dr. Shaffer aims high and really hits the mark. Most recent, successful books about learning and video games go for the seasoned computer aficionado (me), or the rank computer newbie (my husband). Rarely do they target both. Shaffer's topics are deep and wide, but his language is fluid and unassuming; as a result, both audiences will find useful chunks of knowledge that resonate.

It is not hard to understand why todays twelve-year-olds would rather play SIMS or DOOM than finish their math homework. Shaffer (and his excellent team of graduate students) makes a very compelling case for why those experiences need not be mutually exclusive. In fact, if the games in the book become more the standard in U.S. schools, there might indeed be hope for our kids in the world-wide digital market after all.

Book Description

The painful and baffling mystery as to why some obvisiouly brightchildren do not begin talking until long after the "normal" time isexplored in this book through personal experiences and the findings ofscientific research. The author's own experiences as the father of sucha child led to the information of a group of more than fifty sets ofparents of similar children. The anguish and frustration of these parentsas they try to cope with children who do not talk and institutions thatdo not understand them is a remarkable and moving human story.Fortunately, some of these children turn out to have not only normalintelligence but even outstanding abilities, especially in highlyanalytical fields such as mathmetics and computers. These fascinatingstories of late-talking children and the remarkable families from whichthey come are followed by explorations of scientific research that throwlight on unusual development patterns.

Praise forLate-Talking Children

"For parents ofchildren with language problems, Thomas Sowell combines a compassionatefirst-person account with sound, clearheaded advice. And it is all donein Sowell's style: indefatigably researched, sharply reasoned, andbeautifully written."
--Steve Pinker, Professor and Director of theCenter for Cognitive Neuroscience at MIT, and author of The LanguageInstitute and How the Mind Works

"Written with uncommonclarity, compassion, and common sense, Late-Talking Childrengives parents the understanding, the confidence and the fortitude tostand up and to fight for what is best for their child."
--Sally E.Shaywitz, M.D., Professor of Pediatrics, Yale University School ofMedicine; Co-Director, Yale Center fot he Study of Learning andAttention

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Dr. Sowell.......2007-07-09

Dr. Sowell has done all parents a tremendous service, but this book is especially helpful for those parents who are questionning their child's development. He reminds us that "every child is different." We've all heard that expression used to catch the vagaries of the development process, but you'll never realize how hollow it can ring until some childcare type tells you that they think your child may be developmentally delayed. This book helps deal with the certainty that your child *is* different and puts it in perspective. It should be read along with the followup book "The Einstein Syndrome."

After two years of self-study in this area, I still found a great deal to learn in these books. Most of all, I found a lot of hope and perspective regarding kids that don't sit up and elocute at 18 months.

The best advice in this book: take your children with you everywhere, expose them to everything possible. When they're ready to communicate, you'll have lots to talk about. My son is still working his way along, but we've made great progress, as others have, by letting him have some space and grow at his own pace.

Another great idea reinforced by this book: Don't assume that your child doesn't understand or is behind because they don't speak. I've seen childcare "professionals" that make this mistake every day.

Finally, this book hints at the danger of over-assessing children and the problems of the incentive structures within public schools. I have seen first-hand how problematic the opinions of pseudoprofessionals can be, and how unscientific they are. The second book covers this threat to society in more depth.

This book helped me help my son, and that's the important thing. We are in debt to Dr. Sowell for bringing this issue to light.

3 out of 5 stars Very interesting.......2007-03-09

I thought this was a very interesting book. I really enjoyed the anecdotal information and the stories about his son. Definitely worth reading if you are curious about the topic.

5 out of 5 stars Late Talking Children.......2006-08-27

Excellent book. Empowers parents and honors children. Mr. Sowell's sharing of his own experience and that of others is powerful and useful.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2006-07-27

I read this book because I was so worried about my son. After having 3 daughters, I noticed that my son's speech was delayed. The words "autism", "speech therapy", and other associated words cropped up in the "professionals'" language. When I read this book, it was like I was reading a biography of my son. Now, 3 years later, he's still following the pattern of the kids in this book. His speech is so much better, and I have to laugh because had I taken him to speech therapy, I would have been impressed at how well it must have helped! Some people get very angry towards this author because they say that their children really are autistic and they wasted time by not treating their children after reading this book. If that's the case, then the author isn't talking about their children and he makes that clear in his book. Sowell saved me lots of time, money, and anxiety.

5 out of 5 stars Revisiting Late Talking Children by Thomas Sowell.......2005-12-27

I benefitted enormously from this book. I was amazed at the venom unleashed [by only a few reviewers] on this informative and helpful book, which makes no claims to be based on scientific studies but on anecdotal evidence that fell into the writer's lap because he had to struggle through the anxiety of observing and, yes, testing his own late-talking child. It is not a how-to-book, nor does it attempt to give parents diagnostic tools. The anecdotal approach is helpful because it does not present just the situation of one child, but the predicament of many who fall outside the parameters of the lists that now proliferate in the health care community which pretend to establish rigid parameters of normal development, despite disclaimers to the contrary.

Late Talking Children does not pretend to be a panacea but to offer useful insight into the phenomena to parents who may well become involved with a health care system which is not always parent-, child-, or family-friendly. Kudos to Dr. Sowell.

Book Description

Taking professionals and students step by step through conceptualizing, planning, and implementing an effective early literacy program, this book focuses on preventing reading difficulties and promoting success in at-risk 3- to 5-year-olds. The authors draw on extensive research and many years of influential work in real classrooms. A comprehensive framework is delineated for helping young children construct meaning from different kinds of texts, develop key oral language skills, and learn concepts about print and the alphabet. Ideas for tailoring instruction to the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse learners are accompanied by clear assessment guidelines. The book also offers practical, how-to-do-it suggestions for setting up literacy activities and arranging the classroom environment. Concluding chapters bring the authors' approach to life with vivid depictions of a preschool and a kindergarten classroom in action. Two invaluable appendices provide additional useful resources: reproducible sheets for conducting literacy assessments and a primer on phonics for teachers.

4 out of 5 stars Very good........2007-06-26

I thought this book provided a lot of useful information for someone who is beginning work in this field. I do feel like a great deal of it is targeted more towards preschool than kindergarten, but definitely addresses the needs of "at-risk" students. The assessment suggestions were weak in my opinion, but a good starting point.

I purchased the whole series. At times different forms call for my attention and the additional selection is definitely appreciated. The variety is quite good. They range from simpler to complex, with open spaces which leave room for my own variations. The author's designs seem to create a sacred space in which the individual's own light can shine, even if all they want to do is simply "color" a bit. I would expect this flexibility to make them accessible to people with widely varying skills: children, many disabled persons, the elderly, the imaginative and the gifted artist, as well and most of us who are somewhere in between. Yet they are undemanding so that no one need miss out on the calm center and its healing.

Author, artist, transpersonal psychotherapist and business person all describe what Monique Mandali is, but do not tell you who she is. I've been privileged to meet Monique and I know that she is a seeker traveling her path. Her walking stick is her love for all, especially children. Ms. Mandali offers a series of four coloring books for children and adults. There are three different delights in the original Everyone's Mandala Coloring Book series, each consisting of 22 designs. While the original three books in the series contain designs by the author, the latest (and perhaps greatest) has 25 peace mandalas from children all around the world. The Peace Mandala Coloring Book is very special because the mandalas are designed by children unencumbered by the pressure of adult living. Further, they bring a variety of spiritual as well as geographical cultures to bear.

Monique Mandali has given us something special. Not only do we find drawings to color that can aid in health and serenity...Everyone's Mandala Coloring Book Series is additionally special because they represent the best part of Monique Mandali, her love!
