Book Description

Nothing lights up a room like flowers. Whether it's baby's breath draped on a table at a wedding reception, clusters of daffodils in small pots scattered throughout a living room or a bucket of sunflowers on a picnic table, a strategically placed bouquet has the power to create a mood and make us feel special. Unfortunately, most of us don't know how to display flowers properly, and they often end up clumsily thrown together in a vase.

In A Passion for Flowers, Carolyne Roehm teaches readers how to create arrangements that set off a flower's natural beauty. She discusses the overall features of dozens of the most popular flowers and helps readers understand how these elements relate to each other. Though the book is filled with ideas for brightening holidays and special occasions, Roehm stresses that the magic of flowers should be enjoyed year-round. Organized by season to profile the blossoms as they come into their glory, bouquet "recipes" with step-by-step instructions are sprinkled throughout along with special care instructions for more sensitive blooms. Sections detailing containers, conditioning flowers and elements of floral design are included at the end of the book. A Passion for Flowers features 250 breathtaking photographs and is a treasure trove of knowledge and inspiration that will help readers stop and smell the roses every day.

Just so lovely that my four year old granddaughter could not resist opening this book. Better still, she carefully turns the pages and studies each flower....now she gets flower lessons on each visit.

True passion begins early! Another flower lover is born!

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Gift for the Lover of Beauty.......2001-05-26

Carolyne Roehm demonstrates her exquisite taste from the very first page of this lavish book. Organized by season, each chapter celebrates the beauty of all sorts of blossoms in stunning arrangements. These arrangements are lush and full and show an artist's mastery of texture and extraordinary combination of color. The photos are reminiscent of the sumptuousness of the movie, The Age of Innocence, with lovely gilded gold, crystal and porcelain containers. The photography truly is breathtaking and includes not only close ups of the bouquets but also glimpses of elegantly set dining tables, gorgeously furnished rooms and spacious gardens. Her prose is poetry, but also practical in the sections on containers, elements of style and basics. A better book on flower arranging couldn't possibly exist.

5 out of 5 stars **Fantastic Photos**.......2001-05-04

This book is a joy- the vibrant photos actually helped me through the long Pennsylvania winter. Lots of great tips on arrangements- from colors and containers. I envy Roehme's budget for entertaining!

5 out of 5 stars Incredible photography of the most beautiful flowers.......2000-12-30

The flowers depicted in this book gave their lives for a truly noble cause and have been honored appropriately by the photographer. Quite simply they were displayed and photographed in the most beautiful fashion possible. Perhaps the key word there is fashion -- Carolyn Roehm has the experience and eye for fashion, having been a former designer, and that experience may be what enabled her to display the flowers in a way that truly does them justice. I coveted this book for a long while, having seen it in a bookstore, and couldn't get it out of my mind. Now that I own it, I consider myself very fortunate indeed. The book is divided into the four seasons. Particularly strong are the photos depicting the flowers prevalent in Fall and Spring. The smoky greens, yellows, oranges, reds, and browns of the Fall months's foliage manage to look festive and lovely despite their representing the waining of life until the Spring. The photos of lilacs and daffodils in the section on Spring make one hopeful for the end of winter and make one realize why all that shivering is eventually worthwhile. I loved this book and recommend it heartily for anyone who loves pretty flowers and doesn't particularly have any special horticultural knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Breathtaking........2000-11-05

This book was given to me as a birthday gift, and I am still in awe at my good fortune. Not only is the floral design breathtaking, Ms. Roehm gives excellent design tips on color, which vase to use, what flowers work best with each other, and on conditioning flowers whether they be cut from your own garden or purchased through a wholesale flower market.

The title of this book is so perfect, as it is truly about flowers and style, and it's well worth the price.

For history buffs or gardeners who enjoy more than just digging in the dirt, Tulipomania presents a fascinating look at the tulip frenzy that took place in Holland in the mid-1600s. Beginning as gifts given among the wealthy and educated folk of Europe and Asia, the tulip rapidly became a source of incredible financial gain--similar to today's Internet start-up companies or Beanie Baby collections. Stories of craftsmen discontinuing their trade and focusing on raising tulips for public auction, where they sold for prices comparable to that of a manor house, are astonishing. Poets, moralists, businessmen--it seems everyone was involved at some level.

Lack of regulation and poor quality control were just a couple of the details that led to the abrupt crash in February 1637. Tulipomania was the original market bust--people were ruined, debts went unpaid. It was a disaster similar to the stock-market crash of 1929. A brief resurrection of the mania occurred 65 years later in Istanbul, and while it was not the financial obsession Holland experienced, it led to the creation of standards in flower shape and increased the development of new types. You don't need to be obsessed to enjoy this book--an interest in tulips, history, and the futures market ensures that this will be a remarkable read. --Jill Lightner

Book Description

In the 1630s, visitors to the prosperous trading cities of the Netherlands couldn't help but notice that thousands of normally sober, hardworking Dutch citizens from every walk of life were caught up in an extraordinary frenzy of buying and selling. The object of this unprecedented speculation was the tulip, a delicate and exotic Eastern import that had bewitched horticulturists, noblemen, and tavern owners alike. For almost a year rare bulbs changed hands for incredible and ever-increasing sums, until single flowers were being sold for more than the cost of a house.

Historians would come to call it tulipomania. It was the first futures market in history, and like so many of the ones that would follow, it crashed spectacularly, plunging speculators and investors into economic ruin and despair.

This is the history of the tulip, from its origins on the barren, windswept steppes of central Asia to its place of honor in the lush imperial gardens of Constantinople, to its starring moment as the most coveted--and beautiful--commodity in Europe. Historian Mike Dash vividly narrates the story of this amazing flower and the colorful cast of characters--Turkish sultans, Yugoslav soldiers, French botanists, and Dutch tavern keepers--who were centuries apart historically and worlds apart culturally, but who all had one thing in common: tulipomania.

5 out of 5 stars A Single Flower and the Dutch Golden Age.......2007-02-24

In 1562, most of the first tulip bulbs ever to enter Holland were mistaken for a type of onion and were promptly roasted and eaten. The few that were actually planted in the ground popped up the following spring, to the utter astonishment of Dutchmen (and -women). But it took almost another century for the flowers to drive them crazy.

Why would pious, hard-working Calvinist merchants spend fortunes (few won, most lost) on a flower? The story of Holland's infatuation with tulips in the 1630s is as much a story of the temperate Dutch merchants' uncomfortableness with their own wealth. (The Catholics--they could flaunt their money. Calvinists--they had to repress it.)

The Dutch East India Company was founded in 1602. After a few decades of Dutch ships plying distant seas and returning home laden with exotic goods, the merchants with a stake in the game became staggeringly wealthy. Yet even with their newfound wealth, they were still Calvinists: severe and restrained. They didn't decorate themselves (like those Catholics), so they decorated their surroundings. And what to buy with all that wealth? How about a commissioned portrait of wife and kids (looking severe and restrained)? Check. Nice house? Check. Manicured garden behind house? Check. And to fill that garden?

An exotic flower, first introduced from the Orient, became the object of a national obsession. Entire markets were created just to trade tulips, and the markets were soon swamped with speculators. It was the first-ever futures market. At the height of the tulip-mania, in 1636 and 1637, single bulbs could be sold for 3,000 guilders: enough to buy you one ship, eight pigs, four oxen, sundry other animals, a year's worth of food (good food, mind you), a set of clothes, some furniture and some nice silver cutlery to boot.

So why the tulip? Perhaps it was the Calvinist equivalent of the five-carat diamond ring: an acceptable treasure, neither flashy nor ostentatious, but delicate and natural, created by God. (And perhaps the fact that it bloomed only a few weeks every year meant the neighbors couldn't accuse you of constantly showing off your wealth--another sign of God's own temperance.)

The story of any 'mania' offers insight into the aspirations and anxieties of the culture it affects. And even though Mike Dash's 'Tulipomania' focuses primarily on the short-lived craze for a single flower, it opens a window on the social economics of the Dutch "Golden Age": how Holland's merchant class struggled with its strict faith, its new-found wealth, and its place at the center of a burgeoning world power.

5 out of 5 stars A classic history of a financial mania.......2006-12-08

I read this book years ago - and it's still with me. Observing the stock market, real estate, or gold, I'm reminded of the lessons it imparts.

How often can you say that about a book?

And it was fun to read - if you like histories, of course.

5 out of 5 stars If you love tulips and you don't know why...read this book.......2006-07-16

Tulipomania has been on the market for a few years, and I heard of it quite awhile back and finally got around to reading it. Anyone who loves tulips (and does not know why) needs to read this fascinating book.

While living in Amsterdam (1999-2001) weekly I would buy a bunch of 50 tulips for $10 and split the bunch up with friends, I always had them in my apartment, and only now can I identify which ones I was buying. These same friends also shared with me that during WWII, the Dutch were forced to boil and eat tulip bulbs left in warehouses. That's post-modern history of tulips...their origins in the foothills of the Himalayas was a surprise, as was the biological explanation that it is a virus that causes certain tulips to "break" and change colors from one season to the next. These are the flower bulbs that were worth more than their weight in gold, and fortunes were exchanged over possessing the rarest of the rare.

The history of the Dutch is also wrapped up in this very well-researched and written book. Their "economic mindedness" from the the butcher to the banker explains how many everyday people got caught up in "Tulipomania" by buying and selling shares in rare bulbs. As a tulip bulb usually grows larger during the season, it weighs more when dug up in the fall. The Dutch wagered the weight would be higher, and when sold, the extra weight was their profit.

All mania ends in sadness, and when the market for bulbs collapsed, many were left bankrupt, and tulipmania became, once again, only a rich man's game.

5 out of 5 stars Tulip Time.......2006-06-02

My fiance bought this book for me at Tulip Time 2005 in Holland Michigan. He was born there and spent his whole life there and I have fallen in love with everything Dutch. I just got to start the book a couple of weeks ago but it has been amazing! It conveys everything about the tulip (which I love)! This book is absolutely great!

5 out of 5 stars If you love tulips, read the book.......2006-01-11

I love tulips, so when I heard about this book I had to read it and I am glad that I did! The book focuses on the tulip craze in Holland, which took place between 1637-39. Tulips started out in China and Tibet they migrate to Turkey where they are cultivated during the "Golden Age" of the Ottoman Empire by Sullieman the Great at his Topkopi palace. From Turkey, they make their way aboard a ship to Holland.

Carolus Clusius became the first botanist in the west to do an in depth study of the tulip. As professor of botany in Leiden, he greatly succeeds in his efforts to have the bulbs and seeds cultivated by friends of his. The tulips rare beauty takes Europe by storm; women put them in their cleavage in place of wearing necklaces. As the market increases for tulips all manner of people start to breed them as a `cash crop' and trading in them brokers similar to selling stocks. People from all occupations are selling their trade tools like weavers looms to raise money to breed tulip bulbs. All of this activity causes a feverish market to spark a significant increase in tulip prices. The market really spurs the first futures market, which really trades in promissory notes and not tulip bulbs since they have a definitive growing season and people want to trade in them all year round. These promissory notes allow the euphoria to get out of hand. The market matures to the point to where one growers holdings sells for enough money to support a family of four for over one half of their lifetime. People finally come to their economic senses, money supply and bulbs dry up, and after 2 years of the tulip market being driven at a feverish pitch, it finally goes bust. Of course this causes financial ruin for allot of people. The market stabilizes and Holland becomes the premier growing area for Tulips in the world today.

This is a good book to learn about tulips during this time in history. It is an enjoyable easy read.

This sumptuously illustrated volume by Peter Beales will be the definitive guide to gardening with roses for years to come.

4 out of 5 stars A love affair with roses.......2005-04-15

Peter Beales is one of the most recognized names in the rose world and his previous book "Classic Roses" is still one of the best reference books for roses on the market. His latest, "Passion for Roses" is not a reference book but a good introduction to roses. In the first chapter, Beales writes about how his love affair with roses began and how it has progressed since he first discovered them as a teenager working in a nursery. He has traveled the world photographing roses and many of them are included here. He also remembers some of the most memorable gardens he has visted.

Subsequent chapters describe the different types of roses (species, old roses, modern roses, climbing roses, ramblers and scramblers, etc.) The last section of the book is an encyclopedic directory of roses mentioned in the book. The photographs are lovely and this is a beautiful book to browse through. However, if you are just looking for reference information about individual roses, then you would want to buy his "Classic Roses" instead.

1 out of 5 stars Wow...is this a Palmer? Awful..........2004-03-31

My mother told me how bad this book was, but I just couldn't imagine...it's Diana Palmer, so what did she mean??? I picked it up and at first...not bad...not great...but not awful as she deemed it. Then about 30 or so pages in, wow...it was awful and I wasn't even into half the book.
It went from 'okay' to downright stupid. The characters were so off the wall I had a hard time believing it was the same book. Unreal situations and off the wall fights and arguments brought the story to a new low.

New York Interior Designer Jennifer King moves out to GA after an illness leaves her incapable of going back to her former job. There she meets a cowboy who offers her a job in Texas on his ranch after doing some temp secretary work for him.
She was warned about Rett Culhane, with good cause. He was big and strong and very intimidating. And not to mention very ornery...very orney.(not so much ornery but a jackass IMO)
Being such a soft hearted person, jenny knows there has to be a reason he is such a miserable person. He must have a secret. She becomes determined to find out but to hide what she used to be from him since she is everything he despises.(you know, an independent woman with a college education)

Sorry to be so blunt, but that is the gist of it. He hates her for being educated and having a job and life before moving out there. It makes no sense. They fight and leave one another and they just seem to go about their lives and then come back together and she doesnt really think much of his weird reaction. The fights come clearly out of nowhere and I found it amazing that she was even interested in him. He is a brute and I was confused because this was supposed to be in the 80's. Well past women's lib.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and relaxing.......2000-11-15

I am a big fan of Diana Palmer. This was a pretty good book though I think not one of her best. I completely respected the strength of the main character, Jennifer, as she strived to get back on her feet again and become the career woman she once was. And at the beginng, I loved Rett, the main male chracter, but as the story went on, I start to disrespect Rett because he was self centered and almost cruel. By the end, however, watching him grovel was fabulous. The book itself seemed to be missing something, though, as if the author was side tracked or in a hurry or something. I dunno. I guess I was a little disappointed in Rett. However, this book was still a nice, relaxing novel with spirited characters.

4 out of 5 stars A Definite Crowd Pleaser.......2000-07-21

Actually 4 1/2 stars!

The story is about Jenny, a 23 year old woman, who is hired to play housekeeper/typist to a 35 year old ranch man in Texas named Everett. Everett hates city women because he was disillusioned by a past love, but he falls for Jenny. Unknowingly to Everett, Jenny used to be a New York City top interior designer before coming to Texas and embodies everything which he despises in a woman. Diana Palmer's writing style is well-rounded and flowing. I never felt lost or bored. The story is funny, sentimental, and the situations are real life ones.

But sometimes some of the lines were a little corny. I also think that Everett crossed the line to the point of being cruel and hateful. In a way, I understand why he would feel anger towards her. I applauded Jenny for taking a stand against him and making him grovel at her feet. I think it would have been better if the story had been longer only so that Everett would have had enough time to make it up to Jenny for his stupidity.

I love stories of Texas ranches and strong men and women. I highly recommend this book and definitely look forward to reading more of Diana Palmer's books, eagerly.

5 out of 5 stars Another good one by Palmer.......2000-06-29

I really liked this story. If you like Diana Palmer books, you'll love it. Jenny and Rett have problems (of course) because his ranch isn't doing very well and then he finds out she is a big city woman who can make a lot more money than him. But it all works out in the end (of course)!

A Passion for Daylilies: The Flowers & the People
By Sydney Eddison

They're not just orange and yellow anymore. And the people
who have created them and collect them are people you would like as neighbors.

Among the hundreds of gardening books I have read there are few that truly deserve the tittle, "Absolutely wonderful -- a great read." Sydney Eddison has never written anything but great, educational books that are good reads.

However, her daylily book is not just about Hemerocallis, it includes information about the people involved with daylilies, some history of the plant and how it has evolved. Did you know that the modern, hybrid daylily is essentially an American bred flower? Or did you know that most of the hybridizers have been - and still are - backyard hybridizers. Very few of them have had any training in botany.

While enjoying your read, you will want to meet and converse with the people in Sydney's book. After you finish it, do not be surprised if you end up looking for a local "Hemaholic" or Daylily Collector to find out how you can enjoy the beauty of the flower and the camaraderie of those involved with daylilies.

How could the book be improved? A publisher should sign her to write a new and larger book. My second choice would be a reprint of this book with at least a hundred pages of additional material.

If you can find a copy of this out of print book, buy it. It has become one of the most sought after gardening books.

The first 68 pages, however, gives us anot-so-brief overview on the history of ribbonry in fashion ....We're also treated to beautiful photos of the author's work, whereI've discovered her love for the combination of pink and green.... but as the title of this book states _A PASSION for Ribbonry_,perhaps the purpose of this book was to talk about the author'sdevotion to ribbons and ribbonwork.

The rest of the book dealsmostly with flowers, and I find the instructions to be very clear, with clear photos illustrating each step. I like Ms. Nitschke'sinstructions; I first encountered her in Threads Magazine, in herarticle on cockades. There is also a quilt featuring the flowers onthe quilt blocks. There are also brief instructions on other ribbontreatments, specifically gathering and pleating.

Would I buy anotherbook by this author? Probably. Would I refer to this book often?Again, probably. I really like the creative possibilities she showsutilizing the ribbon flowers, and the instructions are clear andsimple.

    5 out of 5 stars A Passion for Ribbonry.......2000-04-23

I think this is a wonderful book. I have most of the books on ribbon flowers and each one has something to offer that the other doesn't have. The instructions are very good and easy to follow. Camela gets into ribbon folding techniques that are not in the other books and I find that very interesting and useful in decorating. She gives directions for more unusual flowers and these are very nice to use in mixed floral bouquets. This beautiful book is a must for any one that loves to do ribbon flowers.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful feast for the eyes........1999-11-06

This is a wonderful book, I do not care if all history is correct, I have received many hours of enjoyment just looking at the wonderful pictures and the flowers I made went together quickly and the directions were easy to follow. That is why I buy this type of book.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful photographs and very interesting.......1999-07-16

I enjoyed this book thoroughly. Of all the ribbon books I own this one is the one I love to make flowers from. I will buy the other books by Ms.Nitschke.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous book and easy directions!.......1998-11-06

Ribbon flowers are just fascinating to me. I have seen quite a few books on the subject, but my favorite is "A Passion for Ribbonry". Camela has included beautiful flowers and concise directions. I have completed several of the flowers (starting with the cabochon rose) and have found the directions complete and easy to follow. I am very pleased with the natural look of all the flowers. Some of the other ribbon books produce flowers which look crushed and old, but not this one! Plus, she doesn't confuse you with formulas. I would highly recommend "A Passion for Ribbonry" for a beginner or a more experienced sewer. Way to go Camela! Great job!
