Book Description
Thank You for Arguing is your master class in the art of persuasion, taught by professors ranging from Bart Simpson to Winston Churchill. The time-tested secrets the book discloses include Cicero’s three-step strategy for moving an audience to actionÑas well as Honest Abe’s Shameless Trick of lowering an audience’s expectations by pretending to be unpolished. But it’s also replete with contemporary techniques such as politicians’ use of “code” language to appeal to specific groups and an eye-opening assortment of popular-culture dodges, including:
The Eddie Haskell Ploy
Eminem’s Rules of Decorum
The Belushi Paradigm
Stalin’s Timing Secret
The Yoda Technique
Whether you’re an inveterate lover of language books or just want to win a lot more anger-free arguments on the page, at the podium, or over a beer, Thank You for Arguing is for you. Written by one of today’s most popular online language mavens, it’s warm, witty, erudite, and truly enlightening. It not only teaches you how to recognize a paralipsis and a chiasmus when you hear them, but also how to wield such handy and persuasive weapons the next time you really, really want to get your own way.

An Excellent Book for The Writer or Public Speaker.......2007-09-16
I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Public Speaking or persuasive writing. Heinrichs keeps his readers interested in everything he has to say through the use of real-world and pop culture references. Random bits of information in the margins keep every page interesting and well worth your time.
Good but a lot of information.......2007-07-30
This is a great book if you like the subject matter. But don't think you are going to walk away ready to put all this into practice in your next public address or debate with a recalcitrant teen. Keep in mind the author's subtle point that the book effectively represents a summary session on a discipline that is thousands of years old. Not that you won't have fun trying it out though.
Excellent read.......2007-07-13
This is an excellent work and I highly recommend it. I just completed a class in composition and rhetoric at college and this should have been the text book. It is funny but highly informational at the same time.
Remedial Rhetoric.......2007-07-04
I enjoyed the book so much that I signed up to received regular emails illustrating "figures" of speech, as they are used popular media. Jay Heinrichs presents the fundamentals of rhetorics in an unpretentious and transparent manner. A lot of information is presented, and I have come to regret, like Heinrichs, that rhetoric is not taught in schools. I would have benefited from having learned these concepts in grade school. Having been persuaded the power of these techniques, I did get a little bored with the ending, where he makes a case that a rhetorically-trained society would be a more democratic one. While I enjoyed the book tremendously, I didn't give it a "5" because I felt the production of the book was poor. I had to send back my first one because it was defective (missing 30 pages), and the layout of the pages looks like it was done by a high-schooler. Also, I thought the conclusion a bit anticlimactic.
Great introduction to persuasion.......2007-05-30
Jay has written a thoroughly enjoyable book that is not only informative, but funny. Many of the concepts Jay writes about I feel I was following naturally, but never saw written down so succinctly. It is good to know that other people enjoy the useful form of argument, the art of rhetoric, still. I feel that most people I meet these days shy away from a good old fashioned debate, just for the intellectual fun of it! My Italian wife was born and raised in this rhetorical way, and this book reminded me how lucky I am to be with someone who can argue, without fighting.

"Nick Naylor had been called many things since becoming chief spokesman for the Academy of Tobacco Studies. But until now no one had actually compared him to Satan." They might as well have, though. "Gucci Goebbels," "yuppie Mephistopheles," and "death merchant" are just a few endearments Naylor has earned himself as the tobacco lobby's premier spin doctor. The hero of Thank You for Smoking does of course have his fans. His arguments against the neo-puritanical antismoking trends of the '90s have made him a repeat guest on Larry King, and the granddaddy of Winston-Salem wants him to be the anointed heir. Still, his newfound notoriety has unleashed a deluge of death threats.
Christopher Buckley's satirical gift shines in this hilarious look at the ironies of "personal freedom" and the unbearable smugness of political correctness. Bracing in its cynicism, Thank You for Smoking is a delightful meander off the beaten path of mainstream American ethics. And despite his hypertension-inducing, slander-splattered, morally bankrupt behavior--which leads one Larry King listener to describe him as "lower than whale crap"--you'll find yourself rooting for smoking's mass enabler. --Rebekah Warren
Book Description
Nobody blows smoke like Nick Naylor. He’s a spokesman for the Academy of Tobacco Studies–in other words, a flack for cigarette companies, paid to promote their product on talk and news shows. The problem? He’s so good at his job, so effortlessly unethical, that he’s become a target for both anti-tobacco terrorists and for the FBI. In a country where half the people want to outlaw pleasure and the other want to sell you a disease, what will become of the original Puff Daddy?

Satire at its best.......2007-07-21
In the daily melodramas of Washington life--at least the stock versions offered by the hometown paper and the network news--the plots are predictable and the characters easy to read. We have good guys (public-interest lawyers, environmentalists, idealistic congressmen calling for an "expanded federal role"), and we have bad guys (pro-lifers, Second Amendment enthusiasts, people with Pentagon contracts). And then we have the really, really bad guys: the publicists, talking heads, and spinmeisters of the Tobacco Institute, the infamous lobbying arm of the tobacco industry.
Watching one of these poor souls bob and weave on MacNeil-Lehrer, or grimace through a grilling on the morning shows, you can't help wondering: What's it like to be so openly hated, so contemptuously disbelieved, as the fellow who drags himself from bed each morning to defend a product only slightly more popular than Thalidomide? Does his mom hate him, too? Does his wife believe him when he explains why he's late for dinner? Do the kids mind when the Discovery channel compares dad to Himmler? Has he never thought of chucking it all for an easier job--say, writing jokes for Elie Wiesel?
Not all of those human questions are specifically asked and answered by Christopher Buckley in Thank You for Smoking, his new satirical novel; actually, none of them is. But Mr. Buckley has set for himself the large task of entering that rarefied circle of PR hell where the tobacco spokesman resides, to give him flesh and depth, to show with some sympathy his inner life, to share his pain. And then to kill him off. Or almost kill him off.
Our hero is Nick Naylor, chief spokesman for the Academy of Tobacco Studies (for which read: the Tobacco Institute). Like many spokesfolk, Nick is a journalist who failed upward. As a local Washington TV reporter he made the mistake one evening of announcing to a live television audience that the President had, in fact, died, when he had, in fact, not. For that minor error he was removed from the trade of journalism and entered the trade of public relations, where inaccuracy is more highly prized. The pay is better, too.
Nick's job of ceaseless prevarication does not especially trouble him. And Mr. Buckley records his dissembling with such precision, and such relish, that we won't be especially bothered by it, either. Here, to take one of his riffs at random, is Nick pleading for a ceasefire in the smoking wars, with Katie Couric (one of many media stars who make cameos in the novel): "Well, Katie, you can't spell tolerance without the t in tobacco. Our position all along has been, we understand there are people who care strongly about smoking. We're saying, Let's work together on this. Let's get some dialogue going. This is a big country, a great country, and there's plenty of room in it for smoking and nonsmoking areas."
The patter is worthy of Elmer Gantry or Professor Harold Hill. Like them, too, Nick is a bottomless fount of information. Did you know that smoking prevents Parkinson's disease? Scientific data suggest that it does. And smoking reduces the incidence of carpal-tunnel syndrome, since smokers take more frequent breaks from their computer keyboards. At the same time, bans on smoking in the workplace have led to an alarming rise in pneumonia, from thrusting smokers into the elements merely because they've chosen to enjoy a pleasurable recreational activity enjoyed by forty million other Americans.
In thus defending the right to smoke, Nick is cheered on by the MOD Squad--a small luncheon group that takes its name from its members' reputations as Merchants of Death. Charter members are Bobby Jay, of "SAFETY, the Society for the Advancement of Firearms and Effective Training of Youth, formerly NRTBAC, the National Right to Bear Arms Committee," and Polly of the "Moderation Council, formerly the National Association for Alcoholic Beverages."
I do not doubt that in the vast chow dens of Washington, some equivalent of the MOD Squad actually exists. "Their guests had come from such groups as the Society for the Humane Treatment of Calves, representing the veal industry, the Friends of Dolphins, formerly the Pacific Tuna Fishermen's Association, the American Highway Safety Association, representing triple-trailer truckers, the Land Enrichment Foundation, formerly the Coalition for the Responsible Disposal of Radioactive Waste, and others."
What brings this sad band of brothers and sisters together is their shared fate: to defend, for pay, the quotidian pleasures and practices of American life against the assaults of a new, aggressive, and spectacularly priggish political culture. But the MOD Squad's solidarity is sorely tested when the going gets even tougher, as it does when a band of anti-smoking zealots (or so it seems) kidnaps Nick and attempts to terminate him with extreme prejudice, by plastering him with (what else?) nicotine patches. From here the plot accelerates; I won't spoil your pleasure by telling you where it leads, except to say that you'll be amazed at where you end up.
Thank You for Smoking is at once a mystery, a political drama, and a knowing social satire of the first rank.
It's a dicey combination, and I can't think of another contemporary American novelist who could pull it off with such dexterity and high spirits. Mr. Buckley's ear for the cant of bureaucracy and publicity is pitch-perfect, and his rendering of the essential absurdity of so much of Washington life is unsparing but always humane. Christopher Buckley's Washington is much more entertaining than the stock version, and, I'm sorry to say, much more believable.
Thank You for Smoking.......2007-04-15
This is an entertaining film, worth watching. My main comment is that while called a satire, it serves as a very powerful public relations piece for the tobacco industry. Deep down, I think that tobacco money or influence was a big part of the reason why the film was made. If not, it is an unfortunate coincidence that the film is a strong criticism for anti-smoking activists and a strong justification for what the tobacco industry has done. And even worse, the film implies that the tobacco industry has been tamed by law suits and regulations, while in truth, the economic strength of the industry is greater than ever. While the film indicated that the "bad guys" have been punished, in fact, the industry boomed after the tobacco settlement. And the audience comes to love the man who advocates "trying yourself", "not being told what to do", and "choice" for a product that continues to increase nicotine in cigarettes even as it pretends to warn people of the dangers. As a film, this is very good. As a propaganda piece, it is a real work of art. Watch it and notice how you feel at the end. Who do you like? Who do you ridicule? If the film is done well, those feelings have been crafted by the story. The film is a real success, but I am sorry that this is the success that is sought. This is a film that promotes the tobacco industry.
very smart book........2007-03-19
this book is an incredibly good, slap in your face kind of book. the humor is so on and sophisticated that one would have to be insane not to like this book. the first thing i am going to say is that the the book ends way differently from the movie. if you have the time to read the book first, please do so. the story carried very well and i never really lost interest (like i do with most other books). the book really does hit the nail on the head with the portayal of special interest groups and how their hands are almost always in politics. the story was very well thought out and the plot was incredibly enjoyable. a very good book indeed.
Smarmy, Trite, Dated.......2007-03-16
There's nothing clever, insightful or entertaining about this novel. It's regurgitated College Republican pabulum that won't appeal to any intelligent person over the age of 22. The characters are two-dimensional cardboard cliches of DC reporters, lobbyists, and politicians along the lines of "Bullworth." Cynical adolescent smarm that will only intrigue those with the most rudimentary knowledge or education regarding politics.
Funny, clever, brilliant satire!.......2007-02-21
I picked this up recently because I read and enjoyed excerpts of Florence of Arabia in Atlantic a while back (and still have it on my to-read list, which is ridiculously long). I also had heard of the film, but didn't know it was based on a book or that Buckley wrote it.
What a well-crafted satire! I smirked, snorted, giggled, and laughed my way through. I appreciated the fine writing, even if it did get a little precious at times.
The main character, Nick Naylor, spokesman for the euphemistically named Academy of Tobacco Sciences (otherwise known as the tobacco lobby) is a spinmeister of epic talent. He seems more interested in the art of the spin than the actual views. He almost always shakes off any qualms he has about debunking the dangers of tobacco. He's sneaky and manipulative, and cynical. And yet I liked him and his other lobbyist friends somehow. And when things really start getting interesting, and it's not clear who Nick can trust, I actually found myself rooting for the guy.
But mostly I rooted for this hysterical sendup of the politics of public opinion. I can't wait to see the movie, and I can't wait to read more from C Buckley!

Book Description
Early one morning, a little bear found a little box.
He looked inside. Then he exclaimed,
Why, it's the greatest thing ever! Mouse will love this.
Bear's friends aren't so sure of his newfound treasure, however. That's not so great, says Monkey. I've seen those before, says Owl. And by the time Bear finds Mouse, his own doubts have grown. But Mouse has the last say when he looks inside the little box. It is the greatest thing ever, he tells his friend. Thank you, Bear.
Part mystery, part fable, this deceptively simple story of true friendship is perfect for the very youngest reader. It is sure to tug at your heart.

Thank You Greg Foley!.......2007-08-08
Thank You Bear is one of the sweetest books you'll ever find. Though a children's book, its message makes it perfect for any age.
Wonderful little book.......2007-05-06
I thought about purchasing the book because my grandson is called Bear and the illustrations are simple and lovely. Then I read it. Wow.
Powerful message and oooohhh so simple. Eloquent book of few words.
Delightful Story, Beautifully Drawn.......2007-04-07
With its refreshing, pared down style and a simple but deeply resonant message, Thank You Bear is a delight for children as well as the grown-ups in their lives. Touching on important themes like generosity, diversity and self-doubt, it is ultimately a beautiful tale of friendship and the depths of the heart. A Must for your child's collection; one to keep and pass on. My children adore it.
Lovely book with a nice lesson.......2007-03-25
Thank You Bear teaches the timeless lesson that we should be happy with what we have, and not be concerned with what other people tell us we need. It tells this lesson, but not in a pedantic way. The story is simple and fun, and the illustrations and characters are wonderfully appealing. My kids, 8 and 4, both loved it!

Finding the Right Words.......2007-04-20
I liked that the book started out recommending you thank four people a day. That's a good goal, to form a habit of thanking people. She gives lists of special words to jazz up your thank you notes. The book also has sentences ready to insert in your notes. There are lots of sample notes for various occasions.
Most of it seems rather routine, but it may be a life-saver to a new bride faced with umpteen thank you notes to write for all the gifts.
Beyond the standard, social thank yous, it shows sample thank you notes for members of your family. I like the idea of writing a note telling them why they are special in our life.
She made one suggestion that irked me, to start a thank you chain letter. There's a ton of those on the internet and most people find them pretty annoying. Otherwise, the book had good ideas, although none really exceptional. It's just handy to have it all together.
Good concept for a book, but suggestions are a little cheesy.......2007-03-13
I really liked the concept of helping the reader express heartfelt thanks to the people in his/her life. Personally, the authors' suggestions are a little too cheesy for my tastes and I don't see myself actually doing them. The book did make me think of ways that would be a little more reflective of my personal style, though.
it's okay.......2006-12-31
Bought this book recently and was slightly disappointed mainly b/c many of her ideas seem a bit cheesy. A few sugestions even made me wonder if I'd look like a total dork for doing what she recommended. If you lean towards sappy this is your book but for those who aren't, don't waste your money.
disappointed.......2006-07-27
I have a hard time thinking of things to say. This didnt really make it better. It is a nice idea and has some nice examples but it didnt really help me think of ways to say thank you to certain things like a group.
Thanks.......2006-02-05
Very helpful in writing all different kinds of thank you notes, or just how to say thanks in general.

Richard Scarry's Please & thank-you book.......2007-09-22
Richard Scarry's Please and Thank You Book (Pictureback(R))
I originally bought this book for my son and now I'm buying it for my grand son. It is an excellent book, kids love it and it teaches good values. All the Richard Scarry books are excellent! They hold the child's attention and they learn without realizing it. I always enjoyed them as well, they are fun for the adult to read to their children.
An outstanding book on manners for children.......2007-05-13
Our daughters had this book when they were children in the late 70's and it was always one of their favorites; they still talk about it now (late 20's and early 30's). We have just bought a new copy for our recently born grand-daughter and are sure she will love it just as much. Many of our friends are familiar with this book, especially all the 'Pests' so brilliantly portrayed.
"He's the tops.......2007-02-17
I can't get enough Richard Scary books for my grandchildren. The books are pointed to real situations or lessons, and they are written in a manner that doesn't bore the adult to tears. In fact, I used to love going through the original "Best Word Book" before it was revised to be politically correct. Newer versions have lost some of the suble humor (the bear dressed as an Indian holding an ice cream cone for the "i" on the alphabet pages).
Nonetheless, the Scary books are gentle, educative and entertaining. What more could you want?
cute.......2007-01-10
My daughter likes this book a lot, and it is fun to read and look at, though she hasn't yet learned to say please and thank you!
ok but not that great.......2007-01-03
I read it so long ago that I actually forgot why I was not so impressed and I already gave the book away to my grandkids so I actually can't peek at it again. I think I recall not caring for the pictures. The choice of animals were not friendly or pleasant. I usually love Richard's books.

Customer Reviews:
Racism in "Peas and Thank You" I am shocked !.......2007-08-23
I was shocked when I heard it read aloud to my 7 month old daughter. I was like "Whoa, hold on! What did I just hear. Total Racism!". The line, "So when April draws near. Where would you like to be? With a BEAN FROM THE SOUTH? Or a WEST MANOR PEA?". This is so freaking racist. The author's name is Mike Nawrocki btw. The references where obvious and blatant. Horrible!
Oh yeah, no stars should be an option!
GREAT BOOK.......2007-04-15
Okay let me start by saying, who needs the book at this point? Momma has this baby memorized. My daughter has loved this book from probably 6 months on. She eats the book, she always brings this book out first. It's catchy it's got a good message. Good buy you won't be sorry.

Very useful.......2007-05-12
This book had come in handy. I keep it at my desk and refer to it often. It is a great resource and a perfect nudge to write letters that I normally put off.
Extraordinarily Useful and Easy to Use.......2007-02-20
This is a remarkably useful and timeless book --it provides easy to use models for thank you and sympathy notes. I found the author's comments, wit and distinctive voice charming and unique. I am still chuckling at her dedication and the all too true insights she has regarding gifts and how to say something just right when words seem to fail us.
Great Reference - Easy to Use!.......2007-02-14
If you constantly put off writing thank-you notes or sympathy cards, get this book and the task becomes easy. It helps you find the right things to say. This would be a great gift for a bride faced with writing tons of thank-you notes!
Easy Etiquette Notes.......2006-11-10
I love this book! I use it all the time! I even bought 2 so I could have 1 at work!
Too Basic.......2005-12-13
I would not waste my money on this book. If the price would have been $4.00, then it may have been a good buy. Maybe I was expecting too much but it only covers the bare basics of note writing etiquette.
Customer Reviews:
What a gift!.......2000-12-31
This book is incredible!! I'm 17 years old, and a senior in high school. I ordered two more of this book (which I had already bought one in a book store around here)to give as Christmas presents to a few of my teachers that I've had for a long time, as kind of a token of my appreciation. I already gave it to one of them, and she absolutely broke down into tears, said it was the nicest gift she had ever gotten. Hi, such a fan.

Excellent book.......2007-10-03
As a calligrapher in the wedding business I was looking for books to recommend to brides from my website. I found this book to be a little gem of information. It won't write your thank you's for you but it will guide you through the do's and don'ts using basic common sense. It has a helpful thesaurus and several sample notes to help you get past the writers block you will inevitably get when you sit down for this daunting task.
Ummmm....are you serious.......2007-04-26
This isn't the first time I've fallen for the mental game of "well, two people on Amazon loved it - it must be great" when purchasing an item. This book certainly falls into this category for me.
I read the book cover to cover in about two hours (nice feature), but only received two or three helpful "etiquette" pointers. Other than that, I feel you're buying a book of basic common sense when it comes to writing a thank you.
Thus said, I've always been a decent writer, so....this book is probably more helpful for people that have a hard time finding what to say and how to say it. I, personally, do not have many reservations in this area.
So, in short, this book was not useful to me, but, not to be completely negative, it might be a good inspiration for those that feel writing a thank you is an extremely daunting task - that's just not me. º
Excellent Book.......2006-01-10
This book was a wonderful tool I used when writing thank you notes after my wedding.I got many compliments on how well written they were from many of our guests. It has helped me write thank you notes since my wedding for many other occasions. I think it is important to write a "heartfelt" thank you note to someone who took the time to purchase a gift or give you their time. In fact, now I get irritated when I get a thank you note with 2 sentences!
I couldn't have written them all without this book!!.......2002-02-15
This book is fantastic! It helped me slog through the 179 thank you notes I had to write after my wedding. There were lots of great ideas of what to say and how to say it, and beleive me, after about the 25th thank you note, I needed all the help I could get. There is good solid, practical advice as to how to manage the thank you note writing task as well as inspirational advice to help you stay properly focused and, well, thankful. All in all, it was indespensable!

An 18 page pamphlet.......2007-08-23
Very disappointed. 'Heard about it on the Today TV show. It is an 18 page, hardcover pamphlet, 90% photos, with captions. Total text of "wisdom" could fill no more than 3 pages.
I gave this to wife for Mother's Day.......2007-07-17
My wife is a Julie Andrews fan, and that was enough to recommend this book. The book reflects on a mother's relationship with her child, and all that she comes to learn while "seeing" the world with a "child's eyes."
My wife loved the book. It makes for a wonderful gift.
A Great Gift for Mother's Day, Mom's Birthday, or New Mom.......2007-06-08
This book is filled with beautiful photographs and inspiring words about Mom's and kids. It brought tears to my eyes...
so sweet.......2007-06-02
This book is the sweetest. You'll slow down and see the world in your child's eyes.
VERY DISAPPOINTING.......2007-05-18
I had really looked forward to some words of wisdom from this very articulate and loving mother and daughter duo. What I got instead was very weak and tepid. The book was very meager in size and content, containing only photos and mundane "poetic" expressions. I could have written a much deeper and meaningful book about the wisdom gained and shared between my mother and myself in our 62+ years together . . . and maybe I will one day.
