    Book Description

Here is a warm and intimate visual biography of artist Romare Bearden (1911-1988). The photographs in this book were culled from Frank Stewart's thousands of images taken from 1975 until the artist's death. Stewart worked closely with Bearden, photographing him working in his studio, attending exhibitions and events, and relaxing with family and friends. These pictures reveal a warm and generous man, and offer insight into the genius evident in his art.

Among the preeminent artists of his generation, Romare Bearden represented the places where he lived and worked: the rural South, the northern cities of Pittsburgh and New York, and the Caribbean island of St. Martin. Religious subjects, music, and history and literature are overlapping themes in Bearden's work. The artist is best known for his collages and photomontages, but he also worked in watercolors, gouaches, and oils. In 1987 he received the National Medal of the Arts.

This book is organized into eight sections: Canal Street, Long Island City, The World of Art, Lectures and Teachings, Friends, Staten Island, St. Martin, and Canal Street, Again. Ruth Fine's introduction discusses the symbiotic relationship of the artist and photographer, and her interview with Stewart serves as a running commentary accompanying the images.

    Book Description

Romare Bearden (1911-1988), the great African American artist, spent much of the last two decades of his life on the Caribbean island of St. Martin. This tropical experience influenced not only the work (mainly watercolors) that he produced while in the region but also the imagery of rural North Carolina and Harlem that he created during his final and most productive years. Best known for his paintings and collages of jazz and the rural South, he was honored by a major retrospective of his life's work at the National Gallery of Art in 2003.

Bearden was explicit that, for him, the Caribbean was vital. "Art will go where the energy is. I find a great deal of energy in the Caribbean. . . . It's like a volcano there; there's something unfinished underneath that still smolders."

In this full-color work, lavishly illustrated with 130 Bearden paintings as well as many photos of him and his friends in St. Martin, distinguished scholars Sally Price and Richard Price explore Bearden's Caribbean experience with an insider's eye. Friends of Bearden, such as poet Derek Walcott and writer Albert Murray, contribute their critical assessments of Bearden's legacy, through interviews with the authors. Commentary by others, such as James Baldwin, Alvin Ailey, and Ralph Ellison, help round out the picture.

The book focuses on several themes that Bearden treated in his Caribbean work. In his "enchanted places," a lush forest provides the setting for sensuous female nudes. His "Obeah series" explores the mysteries of local religious life, depicting a variety of ritual specialists in trance. And his "Carnival series" bursts with the energy of that quintessential Caribbean celebration.

In this book, the Prices reassess Bearden's Caribbean experience, locating it at the very center of his artistic legacy.

"Romare Bearden: The Caribbean Dimension", co-authored by Sally Price and her husband Richard (both of whom are professor of American Studies, Anthropology, and History at the College of William and Mary in Virginia) showcases the life and work of the African American artist Romare Bearden (1911-1988) and his Caribbean work during his last twenty years with its themes of 'enchanted places and lush forest settings for sensuous female nudes. Also included is his 'Carnival' series revealing through an artist's eye the quintessential nature of this annual Caribbean celebration. Best known for his paintings and collages of jazz and the rural South, Bearden's work was postumously recognized with an exhibition at the national Gallery of Art in 2003. Enhanced with the inclusion of 130 paintings, as well as a profusion of photographs of Bearden and his friends, "Romare Bearden" also incorporates poet Derek Walcott and writer Albuert Murray's critical assessments of Bearden's enduring legacy, along with the thoughts of such luminaries as James Baldwin, Alvin Alley, and Ralph Ellison. Simply stated, no serious academic library American Art History collection can be considered complete or comprehensive without the inclusion of "Romare Bearden: The Caribbean Dimension".

    Book Description

Shange's lyrical poem is a tribute to the language of music and the magical, often mystical, rhythms that connect people. Music defines who we are as individuals, the places where we live, and how we exist within our communities. Music is life.

Written in a syncopated style that has its own melody, the poem is perfectly married to twenty-one extraordinary and diverse works from Romare Bearden who once said, "I paint in the tradition of the blues."

Here is a unique and visionary book that speaks, indeed sings, to both children and adults and is, at once, compelling, profond, and entertaining.

Someone read this book to me when I was young. Ever since then I've been inspired to write. I love this book. The word use by Ntozake is refreshing. Her poetry is very original. She has accomplished a lot, because it's suitable for all age groups.

    5 out of 5 stars Artful synergyý........2001-03-17

Ntozake Shange's poem, "i live in music", along with Romare Bearden's collages are presented together in this appealing book. The text and the visuals are skillfully paired and they feed each other's expressions.

"i got 15 trumpets where other women got hips

& a upright bass for both sides of my heart"

Shange's words are in turn playful, soulful, artful. The music she describes is encompassing and tangible - a real thing to be felt and true part of our beings.

Bearden's collages and paintings are vivid, engaging images of African American life and culture. The images are expressive and rich illustrations of musicians and singers. "Show Time" and "Fancy Sticks" are nearly audible - one can see the rhythm and song.

Shange and Bearden's talents complement each other so well one would think this had been a concurrent, collaborative effort rather than subsequent assemblage.

Along with i live in music, I highly recommend all the books in this series by Stewart, Tabori & Chang's Art and Poetry series:

"Life Doesn't Frighten Me", poem by Maya Angelou, paintings by Jean-Michel Basquiat..... "may i feel said he", poem by e. e. cummings, paintings by Marc Chagall...... "Dance Me to the End of Love", poem by Leonard Cohen, paintings by Henri Matisse

Each one would be a wonderful gift for a teacher, art lover, musician, poet,.... or anyone seeking inspiration. Treat yourself to one - or all.

    For all ages.

4 out of 5 stars A mostly great intro to Bearden.......2006-09-21

This is perhaps the best place to get acquainted with the work of Romare Bearden - one of the key American artistic figures of the 20th century (and unfortunately obscure, relative to more famous figures like Jackson Pollock or Andy Warhol).

Bearden was from Charlotte and grew up in New York City, with a college stint in Greensboro - upon his return to NYC, he began to fashion (alongside several other figures) a career as an artist. The then-emergent Harlem renaissance exerted a strong influence, and Bearden's work reflected the everyday in Harlem between the wars, modified with the strong influence of modernism.

Bearden remained a somewhat obscure figure until much later - the 1960s - when his then-recent shift to collage (digesting modernist and especially cubist influences) attracted substantial attention. This hefty book offers a great look at all phases of Bearden's career, and the visual extravagance of this compendium is of extraordinary value. The accompanying biography is a touch pedestrian - it offers all the pertinient biographical detail, but comes up a little short on context.

Still, mostly a great introduction to an artist worth getting to know.

    -David Alston

4 out of 5 stars The Best of Bearden.......2002-11-13

This book is a fantastic source of information, both written and visual, on one of our country's most underrated and neglected artists. Romare Bearden's career spanned over 50 years and his oeuvre encompasses many styles. If ever there was a "Renaissance" man of American art, this artist deserves the title. The book provides more than adequate information on his early years, family background, influences, and also brings to light the fantastic education Bearden procured for himself by studying with some of the most important artists of his time, Grosz, for example. A fantastic primer for someone looking to get a well-rounded glimpse of a true genius.

3 out of 5 stars An interview with Romare Bearden.......2002-03-13

I am a great admirer of Romare Bearden and when I bought this book I wanted to learn more about him and his art. This book has great pictures but not quite the amount of information I was looking for. I wanted to learn more about Romare's life and the book focus on an interview with Romare Bearden and a brief overview of his life. I believe the author was thinking on the saying that "pictures say a thousand words."

4 out of 5 stars Best Book on a Great Painter; Could be Better.......2000-05-16

Romare Bearden is arguably one of the two or three most important African American artists of the 20th-Century (or just: one of the most important American artists). After moving through several styles from the 30s through the 50s, including social realism and abstract expressionism, Bearden found collage in the 1960s, and from then till his death in the late 80s he did his most important work. Sometimes he constructed his collages out of photos, assembling, let's say, a street scene, out of disparate parts. Even the faces will be constructed out of different eyes, mouth, etc. The result is an image that powerfully evokes the urban life of the period: its precarious hanging together, its danger of pulling apart, and its jazzy, angular rhythms, generated as the viewer's eye bounces from part to part, along the seams, to the image as a whole, and back to the parts. In later works Bearden cut the shapes for his collages from materials he'd painted, or assembled the collage and then painted over it. These new techniques add a subjective element, a visionary interior to the kinetic exterior, resulting in even more powerful paintings.

This book is the best single place to go to look at Bearden's paintings. It has a large selection of reproductions, many in beautiful color. It also has a number of fascinating interviews the author conducted with Bearden, in which the painter comes off as extremely knowledgeable about the history of art, and thoughtful about his own projects. I do wish the book had been better organized. Parts of Bearden's life and art seem left out, while what does appear seems to come in no particular order. Just because Bearden's best work was collage, a book about him doesn't have to be organized like a collage.

    Book Description

Li'l Dan, a slave on a Southern plantation, loves to play his drum. When a company of Union soldiers announce that the slaves have been set free, Dan has no place to go, so he follows the soldiers, who make him their mascot. But Confederate soldiers attack, and Dan discovers that he is the only one who can save his friends.

The only children's book ever written and illustrated by legendary American artist Romare Bearden, Li'l Dan, the Drummer Boy was just recently discovered. Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr. has written a personal introduction to the book, describing his own memories of the artist while Bearden created this memorable tale.

On an accompanying CD, Dr. Maya Angelou, three-time Grammy Award winner for spoken word recordings, reads the text.

4 out of 5 stars Power of the Drum.......2005-01-15

LI'L DAN, THE DRUMMER BOY is a story about a young boy who uses his special talents to save a company of Union soldiers. Dan learned to play the drum as a result of a lot of perseverance and lessons from a slave who lived on the same plantation. One day, he runs into a group of Union soldiers who explain that he and all other slaves are now free. Later, when the company runs into some Confederate soldiers, Dan uses quick thinking and his drum to try and save the day.

LI'L DAN, THE DRUMMER BOY is not just a pleasant and educational children's book, but also an important addition to African-American literary history. The book is the only children's book written and illustrated by the renowned artist, Romare Bearden. The illustrations in the book reflect his trademark artistic style, and as a result, the book not only sheds light on the Civil War era but is an excellent introduction to an important African-American artist.

The book also includes an audio CD which features Maya Angelou reading the story aloud. While her performance is not breathtaking, it does allow children to either read along or follow along with the illustrations as she reads. Overall, this is a wonderfully packaged piece of children's literature.

My 7 year old daughter wants to be both a drummer, like her father and an artist like her aunt. Her two favorite books this year are Lil Dan and DRUM, CHAVI, DRUM! This book is about a slave who learns to make and play drum sounds and when he is freed, through his drumming, he saves others. DRUM, CHAVI, DRUM! is about a little Cuban barrio working-class girl who is not allowed to play Conga drums becasue she is a girl. She and her best friend sneak to the largest Latino festival in the United States: Little Havana Calle Ocho Festival and she finds a way to show everyone that she was born to be a drummer. Both tales moved my daughter (and me). If you have a creative child that loves art and music, these are the two books to get not only for their inspiring tales, but also for the lively writing and the beautiful illustrations.

      Book Description

Conjuring Bearden, a richly illustrated exhibition catalog, explores the theme of the “conjur woman” in the work of artist Romare Bearden (1911–1988). Throughout his career, Bearden represented the female figure of the conjurer, or her Caribbean equivalent, the Obeah woman, in his art. Enthralled by her spirituality and power to transform, Bearden depicted the Obeah in his collage, photomontage, and watercolors. Although much has been written about Bearden, this is the first book to critically address his obsessive and creative relationship with this figure of the black vernacular.

One of Bearden’s most striking methods for introducing the figure of the conjur woman in his art was by distilling Cubist and Dadaist fracture through the deconstructive aesthetics of jazz compositions and African American folk collage and assemblage. With arresting color, Bearden’s conjurers were neither eroticized nor made passive. Essays look at Bearden’s thematic presentation of African American spirituality in relation to his experiments with form and technique. They trace his visual musings on African, Caribbean, and African American expressive mysticism and examine his magical reinvention of pictorial space and time.

This catalog accompanies an exhibition of the same title at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, which will be on display from March 4, 2006 through July 16, 2006. Together, they build on the findings of The Art of Romare Beaden, a major retrospective organized by the National Gallery of Art that toured nationwide.

      Book Description

A landmark work of art history: lavishly illustrated and extraordinary for its thoroughness, A History of African-American Artists -- conceived, researched, and written by the great American artist Romare Bearden with journalist Harry Henderson, who completed the work after Bearden's death in 1988 -- gives a conspectus of African-American art from the late eighteenth century to the present. It examines the lives and careers of more than fifty signal African-American artists, and the relation of their work to prevailing artistic, social, and political trends both in America and throughout the world.

Beginning with a radical reevaluation of the enigma of Joshua Johnston, a late eighteenth-century portrait painter widely assumed by historians to be one of the earliest known African-American artists, Bearden and Henderson go on to examine the careers of Robert S. Duncanson, Edward M. Bannister, Henry Ossawa Tanner, Aaron Douglas, Edmonia Lewis, Jacob Lawrence, Hale A. Woodruff, Augusta Savage, Charles H. Alston, Ellis Wilson, Archibald J. Motley, Jr., Horace Pippin, Alma W. Thomas, and many others.

Illustrated with more than 420 black-and-white illustrations and 61 color reproductions -- including rediscovered classics, works no longer extant, and art never before seen in this country -- A History of African-American Artists is a stunning achievement.

      5 out of 5 stars A Priceless Treasure.......2003-06-21

This is quite simply one of the best books I've ever read. As an avid reader, I do not make that claim lightly. What makes this book so remarkable is how Bearden and Henderson both bring the artists to life and give you a deep appreciation for their work.

No other book I've read on the arts has left me similarly breathless. While many of them have been quite competent at explaining things like "Impressionism," "The Renaissance," or "The Harlem Renaissance," none have so beautifully balanced an explanation of the artist and of the artist's work. By bringing the people to life, Bearden and Henderson have brought the art to life. They have made a priceless contribution to our understanding of African-American artists, their work and the challenges they had to overcome to pursue their passion.

This book is a must-have. It will deepen your appreciation of art and of the contributions that African-Americans have made to it.

      4 out of 5 stars nice book.......2000-02-21

i had a class in college that used this book as a text book. ienjoyed it then, but it wasn't until later that i really had a chanceto sit down and enjoy it. information is good and the pictures are plentiful. this is a very nice book for anyone interested in african american art and culture. another book that i would like to recommend is called souls grown deep: african american vernacular art of the south, volume one. i bought it at an art fair in new york in late january. i'm not sure that it has been released nationally. i've contacted amazon in an attempt to get more info. i have it so i know it is out. this type of book (souls and the history...) are too few and far between.

5 out of 5 stars A great resource for teachers.......1999-12-18

This book is a great resource for teachers of American art or culture. Each chapter provides an interesting biography of the artist along with descriptions of his or her work. Students respond to the art more fully by knowing something of the struggles and daily realities faced by each artist. A great resource for teachers or for the school library.

      5 out of 5 stars A Wonderfully Stunning Revelation.......1999-11-29

This outstanding potrait of little-known, but great and wonderful African American Artists should be required reading for all fine arts programs... The depth of research is evident and this work, a work of Art itself, is to be treasured and placed within the archives of the world's great libraries and the homes of all of us who love and appreciate great art and "Great Books"!..Sylvia Rosario, President,Black Satin Collectibles - email: bmc@blacksatincollectibles.com

      5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......1999-04-25

This book shows that white males have systematically excluded the voices of African American artists. Let's finally do away with white male hegemony and cowardice in the face of dissenting voices. This brave and courageous book explores white male racism, and we must be grateful. However, I would like to have seen an equal number of African American Women artists presented. I guess some of the old hegemonies remain.

It takes a special kind of book to paint the full picture of Romaire Bearden's artistic life. While quietly wrestling with what it meant to be a black American artist at mid-century, Bearden opened himself to a world of cultural influences. He found inspiration in Benin bronzes and paintings by Duccio; the Bible and Buddhism; The Odyssey and the blues; contemporary urban life and the rural lore of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. The Art of Romaire Bearden offers a wise and thoughtful assessment of Bearden in the social context of his life and times. In the graceful lead essay, Ruth E. Fine traces Bearden's career from its beginnings in the mid-1930s, when—as a newly-minted New York University grad—he toiled by day as a social worker and painted at night. Bearden's best-known works are his Dada-influenced photomontages, begun in the mid-1960s, which created a visual equivalent for a disjunctive era of triumph and tragedy for African-Americans. His ou! tput also included stunning book illustrations and costume designs, political cartoons, incisive essays about the role of the black artist and even popular songs. More than 200 color illustrations display Bearden's coloristic wizardry as a master of painted collage and lyrical landscape. The book accompanies an exhibition assembled by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. (through Jan. 4, 2004) which travels to San Francisco, Dallas, New York and Atlanta. —Cathy Curtis

      Book Description

One of America's most innovative artists, Romare Bearden (1911-1988) made colorful and passionate images that reflected his life in a time of creative ferment. His influences ranged from the old masters to African art, as well as the world around him: popular religion and ritual, jazz clubs and brothels, the history and literature of his time, and the places he lived (the rural South, Pittsburgh and Harlem, the Caribbean island of St. Martin). The resulting images are fresh and evocative, filled with quirky details and rhythmic forms.

This authoritative and beautiful book, which accompanies a major retrospective opening at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., provides a provocative and absorbing look at a beloved artist. The Art of Romare Bearden showcases compelling examples of his pioneering work: complex collages and photostats; watercolors, gouaches, and oils; little-known landscapes; his only known sculpture; costume designs; and book illustrations. The book includes a comprehensive overview by distingushed art historian and curator Ruth E. Fine based on extensive new research, as well as essays on Bearden's African sources, his writings (from art scholarship to songs), and his place in art and culture.

5 out of 5 stars Puts all the pieces together.......2005-05-25

This book was published on the occasion of a major retrospective of Romare Bearden's work at the National Gallery of Art. The lead essay by curator Ruth Fine deftly navigates Bearden's multifaceted artistic and personal life, a collage inspired by a world of cultural influences from the rural lore of North Carolina to Buddhism.

The breadth of the exhibition is exhaustive and stunning. Much of the art was loaned by private collections, and has rarely been viewed by the public. In addition to reproducing examples of his well-known collages, photostats and watercolors, it includes book illustrations, program covers, paintings in oil and gouache, murals, costume designs, and his only known sculpture. It also compares Bearden's work with some of its possible influences; for example, Bearden's collage "Down Home, Also" (1971) and Picasso's "Sleeping Peasants" (1919) though of course, Bearden always makes the image his own.

In addition to Fine's essay, 244 color plates and 86 black-and-white illustrations, the book offers five additional essays which place Bearden's life and work in the wider history of American society and art. For example, Jacqueline Francis' "Reading Bearden" explores what he read as well as what he wrote.

An indispensable book that finally puts all the pieces together.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent retrospective on a stunningly gifted artist.......2003-12-19

To call Romare Bearden a "black artist" is a hopeless exercise in trying to pigeonhole an enormously gifted human being. While supporting himself as a caseworker for the New York City Department of Social Services, Bearden turned out works of jaw-dropping skill and artistic talent. His inspiration ranged from Homer to the Bible to current events, and each was a vivid expression of black life in the Americas. Some of the best examples of his output are represented in this volume. The book is gorgeously illustrated and Ruth Fine's excellent narrative helps us get a deeper insight into one of America's finest artists.
