Max Beckmann was among the greatest painters of the 20th century, yet no retrospective of his work has been mounted in the art capitals of New York, London, and Paris in over 30 years. Perhaps the lapse of attention has to do with the importance of abstraction in 20th-century art, and Beckmann's work is always figurative, simultaneously muscular and enigmatic and has enormous and unsettling power. Beckmann began his career as a naturalist and Symbolist in the period before World War I. After the war he developed a unique pictorial style that mixed expressionist color and gesture, mythological and mystical allegory, and the harsh new objectivity of his portrayal of modern life throughout the Nazi reign of terror. A prolific artist in painting, drawing, and printmaking--as well as a powerful sculptor--Beckmann created mysterious images and dense tableaux of unparalleled intensity and complexity during an odyssey that took him from his native Germany to Paris, Amsterdam, St. Louis, and New York. A new examination of Beckmann's role and reputation during the first half of the 20th century has been eagerly awaited. Making use of new scholarship and previously unavailable research materials, this book sheds light on Beckmann's work and his influence on and interactions with the artists of his day. Essays include discussions of Beckmann's Frankfurt cityscapes, his pictures from Italy, his triptychs, his group portraits, and his relationship with cultural politics in the 1920s and 1930s; texts and interviews by artists Leon Golub and Ellsworth Kelly; curator Robert Storr on "The Beckmann Effect"; and artist William Kentridge on Beckmann's Death. This sumptuous volume is published on the occasion of the retrospective exhibition mounted jointly by the Tate Modern, Centre Georges Pompidou, and The Museum of Modern Art, New York. It is the first comprehensive exhibition of Beckmann's work to be seen in the United States since 1984, and the first in New York since 1964.

The definite Beckmann monography.......2007-04-26
This book is the catalogue for the largest Beckmann exhibition ever held, in 2003,at the Centre Pompidou, the Tate Gallery and the Moma. All the masterpieces of this great artist are illustrated and explained, following a clear chronology and putting them in the historical and social context in which they were created. High-quality texts (especially the analysis of Beckmann's influence on contemporary artists like P.Guston)make this an indispensable work. Highly recommended.

Now in his late 70s, Leon Golub is a leading exponent of history painting – painting as a narrative, symbolic expression of global, social and political relations and of the realities of power. In this book, published to accompany a major retrospective exhibition traveling to Ireland, England and the United States, Jon Bird examines the artist's work from the classically influenced early paintings through depictions of conflict and masculine aggression to compelling images of the last two decades. Despite the widespread critical attention his work has received, the range and extent of his practice and its complex interweaving of the iconographic traditions of both high and popular art have not been properly examined. As a history painter, Golub is acutely aware of the antecedents to his own imagery and symbolism; part of Jon Bird's critical project is to track and define the artist's relationship to modernism. Making a case for Golub's practice of "critical realism" that also takes account of the unconscious, Bird focuses on two themes that dominate Golub's work: how his art figures the body as a sign for social and psychic identity, and what might be termed the symbolic expression of social space.

Chicago's art star.......2006-09-06
Jon Bird has written about Golub and he continues to write about Golub. This is a catalogue written for Golub's retrospective in Ireland.He has done a fine job in explaining Golub's work. In another book on Golub it is mentioned that Golub studied with Paul Wieghardt. A German who had studied with Paul Klee and lived in Paris until the outbreak of WW11.I think that Wieghardt would have liked the portraits Golub did of world leaders as they look like alot of the sensitively painted oils in Wieghardts class.Wieghardt painted thin himself.Bird gets across an inellectual portrait of Golub. Chicago figurative painters have been slighted by the art world.This book could do much to put the case before the art public. , the book brings out that here was a first rate intellect.When all the dust is settled about reputations in the figurative school Bird advances that Golub is tops.Watch out California!!! Golub told us about the brutality of war before the Iraq prison scandal.For that he is now thought of in the present art world.

Fascinating Science of the Sun.......2005-05-26
I enjoyed reading this book. Sometimes it can be easy to forget just how fascinating our sun really is. This book helps in this regard. It describes the theories of what the sun was like 5 billion years ago, compared with what it is like today. It discusses the visible part of the sun, as well as the interior of the sun. It also discusses the process of what makes the sun shine, as well as affects on earth, as well as space weather. All is very fascinating, though very complex. At times it is difficult to follow, and at times it gets slightly off the topic. Nevertheless, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about our sun.

Many books that popularize certain scientific topics for a broad readership tend to be rather chatty and include several historical and biographical snipets. Not this book; it's densely packed with scientific information on its subject matter. From theories on the what happens in the sun's interior to the observed effects that solar activity has here on earth, this book covers most of it in fair detail. It is written clearly and the topics are well organized. Several colour plates, charts and diagrams do much to illustrate the ideas presented. Complete with a glossary, a list of references and an index, this book is well put together. It can serve as a springboard for readers who would like more details on certain specialized aspects of the workings of our nearest star. An excellent read!!
Good but tries to cover too much.......2002-02-01
This is a remarkably wide-ranging overview of topics relating to the Sun. It is, in fact, probably rather more wide-ranging than it needs to be. Rather than focusing on the subtitle, it includes chapters on eclipses and earth's climate as well as seemingly rather pointless asides on topics like carbon dating.
The core, however, is quite good, covering the history of solar science as well as our current understanding. A standout chapter covers planned space missions that will investigate the Sun, something I found particularly interesting since I am currently working on one of them (STEREO) and have worked on others in the past.
In summary, when it's good it's very good, but it tries to cover more than it needs to and disappoints in that respect.

Popular science books have to walk a difficult line between scientific detail and an accessible level of simplification. Golub and Pasaschoff do an admirable job here of elucidating what is a highly technical and intricate field. I was reading from only a high-school level of physics knowledge but found most of the book to be comprehensible. Some points left me wondering but sometime I would like to reread and try to work these out. The authors writing style is commendably clear and delineates well what is known, what is likely and what is yet to be discovered using a set of great diagrams and also some beautiful colour slides. Frequently, you may find yourself wondering, "how can they possibly know in such detail about such a distant object?" Fortunately the authors provide excellent and entertaining histories of how our understanding of the sun has developed over the millenia and these are often the most interesting part. The best thing about the book overall though has to be the authors' enthusiasm for the subject which truly imparts to the reader a sense of awe and wonder for our nearest star. Although the subject matter is not as exotic as you might find in The Elegant Universe or Brief History of Time, this too is a highly entertaining and well written exposition of contemporary science for the layman.

Brilliant book on art and the black man!.......2002-01-17
This collection of essays may have come from a particular exhibit or conference. It is a book that discusses black men's status as objects of art. Don't sleep! The art world is racist. Coco Fusco and bell hooks have effectively documented this. So this anthology is a very needed intervention. Articles cover topics such as gay black men in movies, the visual representation of gangsta rap, Mapplethorpe, etc. The contributors analyze numerous art mediums, not just painting or film. What I love about this book is how straight black men and gay black men are treated equally; a discussion of one does not marginalize the other. I especially love the article "The Gangsta and the Diva." This book is incredible!

Leon Golub is best known for his large-scale paintings of violence and the abuse of power, scenes as colossal in brutality as they are in size. But, throughout his long career, Golub was a prolific draftsman as well. His first major drawing period began when he was a student in the 1940s. Encompassing the subjects of sexuality and erotica, The Aldrich Contemporary Museum presents this catalogue from the Contemporary Erotic Drawing exhibition, featuring more than 35 artists. In describing the immediacy and intimacy of drawing, Joseph Bueys once stated, "Drawing is thinking," and indeed, for many artists, drawing is a highly personal and revealing process in which raw ideas are expressed, allowing spontaneous imagery or thoughts to emerge. And so, to examine the subject of eroticism and human sexuality, it seems appropriate to examine these 100 drawings. Many of the images seem to work against images in the media, and so define what is erotic and titallating in their own terms. This 204-page catalogue includes drawings in varyious media by artists such as Ida Applebroog, Cecily Brown, Leon Golub, Tracy Nakayama, Mark Dean Veca, and Su-en Wong; features two essays by Sue Taylor and Wayne Koestenbaum; and biographical information on the artists.
