Book Description

If it were a simple choice, many people would choose to treat and care for their pets with natural therapies. Unfortunately, most cat care-givers find the expectations and requirements of natural pet health care fairly imposing and outside their reality in regards to cat care. Unlike the other resources on the subject, Whole Health for Happy Cats provides readers with the basic information to enable them to ask the right questions as well as find the right answers for their cat and their lifestyle. For individuals interested in caring for their cat without the use of drugs or chemicals, Whole Health for Happy Cats will enable them to incorporate holistic treatments into their lifestyle and benefit from reduced health care costs and a longer and healthier life for their cat. Although the book's approach is organic, it also presents well-documented health facts and research so that cat owners can make the very best decisions for their cat's lifelong health and well-being.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars What a great book for caring cat lovers!.......2007-09-27

I first became acquainted with the author through her Holisticat cat health list. I can't even tell you how helpful that list was to me, offering alternatives to what my vet was telling me was the ONLY course of action for a beloved pet.

This book, the result of years of Sandy's own research and input from cat health experts and feline enthusiasts alike, is superb.

It's not meant to be a medical handbook. Rather, what it does is offer lots of information about what it takes to keep your favorite feline happy and healthy. Preventive care is the focus. If you want to know more about specific illnesses and want great depth in that info, buy Dr. Goldstein's book instad.

Get this one for the following reasons:

1) the author clearly loves the animals she's writing about; her compassion for them and the love she feels for them come through on every page;
2) the author's clear explanations, including substitutions and warnings;
3) the author's thoroughness with her chosen subject matter; and
4) the invaluable information itself, especially the dietary info.

Buy this book; you won't regret the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Beginners Guide.......2007-07-08

Well-designed, written, and bulleted, peppered with graphs, recipes and action-oriented questions with illustrated answers, using lots of color photos on glossy paper... it is not remotely boring.

Love the simplicity and action-oriented perspective. It really IS a "guide" in how to improve the quality of life for a pet, and would be a great starter for any pet owner who wants a quick overview.

P.S. Also adds in cute little trivia... for example:

"Did you know... a group of kittens = 'kindle' and a group of cats is a 'clowder?'" Too cute, riiiight?

5 out of 5 stars The BEST Cat Care Bible.......2007-04-09

Over the years, I have read and consulted many animal and cat care resources for a variety of reasons. I first got into holistic animal care when my best friend, Nina the cat, was dying and no traditional vet could help & I had no clue about this stuff. Since then, I discovered numerous books but none has been as informative and up-to-date as this one.

Not only is the information coming from both personal experience and from veterinary approved sources, but Sandy Arora speaks to you in her book as a compassionate, understanding friend who wants to help & has been in your shoes many times.

Unfortunately, in animal-care circles, you can also encounter many who only want to 'preach' or condemn you and make you feel bad, for doing things a bit differently or your own way. None of that can be found here, for Arora offers alternative ways of doing things, especially if you do not have the time, resources or inclination of feeding an exclusively raw diet to your cat. This is a refreshing, gentle, informative and paws-down best book I have ever found, with methods that really WORK.

5 out of 5 stars Opened my eyes!.......2007-01-24

I love my cats and always want to do what is best for them. Imagine my surprise when the author proved logically to me that I wasn't helping keep my pets happy and healthy.
One of my cats has food allergies, and I thought I would have to deal with his sensitive stomach for the rest of his life (15+ years, hopefully). My other cat is overweight. Now they are on a raw diet (commercially produced). Even though it took some persistence, both cats are healthier and happier. Our sensitive stomach cat has thrown up a grand total of once in the last six weeks (when he started the raw diet); he used to throw up at least every other day, even on the hypoallergenic food. Our fat cat has lost weight and has much more energy. She still gets dry food at night, but we treat it like dessert and she only gets a tiny amount.
Both cats also have terribly anxiety about going to the vet. We have successfully used Rescue Remedy (suitably diluted) to calm their stress. My vet thinks I'm crazy, but she can't argue with the results.
Thanks, Ms. Arora, for helping me improve my cats' quality of life. If my cats are happy, I'm happy.

5 out of 5 stars Thank You, Thank You, Sandy Arora!.......2006-12-05

My bookcase is full of volume after volume of cat-related reading material. Some of this material dates back several years, even decades; however, most is much more current than that, touting some of the biggest names in the "industry." Even as current as most of this material is suppose to be, I have difficulty trusting some of it, especially the discussions on diet. Many of these authors are highly regarded as experts in the animal health field, yet, I still cannot find myself trusting a lot of what I read. Actually, some of the information has even been confirmed as outright dangerous and should not even be said in the same breath as "cat," let alone be recommended for use with a cat.

Sandy Arora's book, "Whole Health for Happy Cats," fills the void that has existed for so long on my bookshelves. She demonstrates herself to be articulate and informative--(it appears she has good background and training in research methodology),-- backing up her information with plenty of documentation, references, and resources.

Being interested in nutrition most of my life, I truly appreciate her guidance on diet. In particular, her knowledge of raw feeding transcends most of what is being offered up by the expert gurus. Here is a lady who really understands what "species appropriate" means (without being dictatorial about it).

I've been practicing holistic methods with everyone in my household, furry or non, for over twenty years. I can only come to the conclusion that Ms. Arora proverbially "eats, sleeps, and *you know what*" cats (holistically, of course) because she seems to have covered just about every imaginable area of SAFE holistic cat care remedies, cat well-being, and cat health: from the nutritional end to the herbal end to the homeopathic end to, well, there is practically no end to what Ms. Arora covers in "Whole Health for Happy Cats." And her book is soooooo much fun to look at while you read it, with beautiful pictures (not just drawings) and informative sidebars and tables. (The picture on page 45 is especially amusing.) As an added bonus, I can actually go over to her discussion forum and ask her for clarification of anything in her book. (Pretty cool, eh?)

I do have one request: At the end of the book, Ms. Arora has added an appendix that outlines a few infectious diseases. You know the ones: FIV, FIP, FeLV; the ones that, when your vet diagnoses them, cause the contents of your stomach to leap into your throat. Sandy provides some wonderful info to assist those who have to bear the burden of that kind of news concerning their kitty. She helps to take away some of the feeling of helplessness that seems so prevalent with these diseases. And she gives the reader treatment options to help extend not only the life, but the quality of the infected kitty's life. My request? Please, Ms. Arora, if you have another book in you, take this subject of disease/illness/conditions and expand upon as many as you can, extending what you have already hit upon in your appendix and nutritional sections: FIP, FIV, FeLV, IBD, CRF, diabetes, and cancer, to name a few that you've touched upon already. It would be wonderful to have a "trustworthy" up-to-date cat-specific book that details different diseases and conditions, holistic treatment options, and nutritional support. It would probably save a lot of kitty parents a lot of grief and frustration, and give a lot of ill kitties a higher quality of life.

"Whole Health for Happy Cats." I would think your cats would indeed be happy if you followed Sandy Arora's advice. Less trips to the vet, tastier, healthier food choices, beautiful fur and skin, healthier teeth, healthier immune systems, and, most importantly, HAPPIER CATS: 'Cause "If kitty ain't happy, noooooobody's happy................"......or something like that.

4 out of 5 stars Great Keepsake!.......2007-09-26

I bought this for my nearly one-year old son to begin marking his Birthday celebrations. Everyone I've shown it to thinks it's a great idea and the perfect way to keep track of Ryan's first 12 Birthdays. Although it won't hold much, I just wanted it to hold invites, thank you cards and a few photos, and it will definitely do that and more. I've been thinking of buying it for all of my friends' kids, too.

5 out of 5 stars Great keepsake.......2007-06-27

This was a great book to purchase for birthday keepsakes. I gave it to my daughter for our grandaughter's first birthday. It was appreciated because it gave her a place to keep the invitation, pictures, etc.

3 out of 5 stars Not exactly what I wanted...but ok.......2007-06-01

Several years back, I saw a birthday memory book at Hallmark. I bought it as a gift for several friends. I looked everywhere for it but had no luck. I found this one on Amazon. It is ok but not exactly what I wanted. I wanted something more 'child-like.' This is very nice but doesn't really scream "I'm a kid!"

5 out of 5 stars What a great idea!.......2007-01-15

I have seen all the school years books for memories but have never seen one for birthdays. My mother sent this up to us and I love it. There are pockets to store cards from the birthdays, pictures, an invitation from the party and some favors you may want to keep too. Obviously there is a limited amount of storage space but I love it. You fill in the age they were for each birthday (great b/c I didn't have this for her first bday). There are also spots for you to tell about their bday, about the party, what you did and ate, highlights from the day, gifts and who gave them, and a place for special memories and hopes for the past/upcoming year. Then you sign it or whoever fills it in signs it. I really love this book! I think I will buy more for family and friends.

Book Description

H. Jackson Brown, Jr. originally wrote Life's Little Instruction Book™ as a gift for his son who was leaving home to begin his freshman year in college. Brown says, "I read years ago that it was not the responsibility of parents to pave the road for their children but to provide a road map, and I wanted to provide him with what I had learned about living a happy and rewarding life." Life's Little Instruction Book™ is a guidebook that gently points the way to happiness and fulfillment. The observations are direct, simple, and as practical as an umbrella.

"But it's not just for young people," says Brown. "Most of us already know how to live a successful and purposeful life. We know we should be more understanding and thoughtful, more responsible, courageous and appreciative. It's just that we sometimes need reminding." Life's Little Instruction Book™ is that reminder, as well as the perfect gift for a relative or a friend who needs encouragement at any time of the year.

Since its debut in 1991, Life's Little Instruction Book™ has revolutionized the publishing industry. This little plaid book, which has been embraced the world over, has sold more than nine million copies, spent more than two years atop the New York Times bestseller list, and has been translated into 33 languages. Though originally written as a gift from a father to a son, its simple message has been enjoyed by men and women of all ages around the world.

Very insightful thoughts that teaches a lot of things.
A great buy for such a small book!

4 out of 5 stars Delightful and full of practical wisdom.......2007-06-30

This is the second volume in a series. It is delightful, easy to read and full of practical wisdom. It can be read in one sitting. The suggestions(512) are short, one or two sentences and were written by Brown to his son. The gems of wisdom are what you typically think of as being handed down from generation to generation.

It should not be read an stuffed in the bookshelf. While we probably have heard or know most of these bits of wisdom, we do need to be reminded of the thoughts. So it is helpful to read them ever so often. The more you read them, the deeper your understanding and appreciation of these truths.

A few of my favorites:

Act with courtesy and fairness regardless of how others treat you. Don't let them determine your response.

Spend your time and energy creating, not critizing.

Keep your private thoughts private.

Treat your employees with the same respect you give your clients.

When you lose, don't lose the lesson.

The book is entertaining and enlightening. Well worth reading a few times a year.

4 out of 5 stars Great to Give as a Gift........2007-04-16

This should be a definite buy. Not necessarily for yourself (although you should read it), but as a gift to give to other people. I received this book as a gift from my mom many years ago and just recently found it amongst a box of books I had forgotten about. Many of the little bits of wisdom are just as fun to read now as they were then.

It contains all the one-liner wisdom you would expect from a loving parent or anyone trying to pass along their good intentions. It's definitely not a book you just sit down to read, as it is a little 5x7 booklet with 5-10 "one liners" per page, but a little reminder you could keep in a special spot and just glance at once in a while. I have taken mine out of the box to do just that.

The thing I really liked as I reread some of the book is that much of the "wisdom" can be pretty different than the run of the mill "feel good advice" you would normally expect. It apparently was written by a person who's sole intention was to impart this wisdom to his child. If that type of intention was written into this little booklet it's got to be good enough to give to others.

Get it, you won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars An OK book........2007-04-05

This book was mildly useful. Much of it was smarmy trash but there were a few tidbits that were worthwhile. For me, it is entertaining to read books like this.

5 out of 5 stars Life's Little Instruction Book.......2006-06-30

I had previously purchased this book several years ago. As a former high school teacher I shared the "One" line notes with my students. This sharing became a routine my students looked forward to see when I posted them. With that in mind, I purchased a copy for my granddaughter for a graduation present.
After this purchase, Amazon informed me of the book that contained the first three editions of Life's Little Instructions. I slso bought tha edition.

4 out of 5 stars Use good sense.......2007-06-27

As a seminary educated pastor, I do recognize that a number of Bible verses are used out of context (a problem not unique to this book). At the same time, Christian critics of the book also seem to poorly interpret Scripture in their critiques.

This is my recommendation: Weigh what is said against the best psychological research and Scripture. As it relates to Scripture, understand that many verses are used out of context, but what is said in the book may still be consistent with Scripture. If you think a teaching in the book is against Scripture, find a verse to support your idea, then ask yourself: Is this verse/passage really against this idea or am I making this up? Use direct teaching passages (like NT letters), because you are likely to find "principles" that the Bible isn't really teaching if you think you "found" a parenting principle from a story, parable, OT Law, or prophecy in the Bible.

No book is perfect, but overall I certainly like the book. It is well worth considering.

5 out of 5 stars Was Jesus bottlefed and forced to cry it out?.......2007-05-18

Was Jesus bottlefed and forced to cry it out? Didn't think so. It's funny how some Christians think that it is damaging to the family unit to respect your baby's needs. Those needs being: Breastfeeding, bedding close to the mother, and not having to cry it out. This book explains how we as humans were designed by GOD to feed our babies with our breasts and keep them near us when we sleep.

1 out of 5 stars Damaging to Family Unit.......2007-02-03

I bought this book thinking it would be a good health manual with a christian perspective but I was very disappointed.

From a christian perspective, I found it shocking that it took several scriptures out of context in developing their permissive-parenting philosophies. Young babies are to be centre of the family (and marriage), rather than equal members. No helping babies to develope in the way they should go. I think this book could be damaging to the core unit called "family" if fully embraced.

Try a more balanced parenting style (not the extremes of demand or schedule feeding) like that which is found in "Secrets of the baby Whisperer" or "Babywise 1".

5 out of 5 stars Worth The Purchase.......2007-01-16

I enjoyed reading parts of the book. Very extensive and detailed. It showed the viewpoints of what a doctor would suggest and what the Lord suggests. In addition, it gives you bible verses and suggested prayers. It has made me more focused to be an effective Christian parent.

4 out of 5 stars Infants.......2006-10-27

I am very concerned by the reviews which seem to suggest that something is wrong with a book that discourages disipline of infants. I understand wanting to raise well disciplined kids. But, babies are different.

Research has shown time and time again that babies CAN NOT be disciplined safely (crying it out is one example) or through other means, without risks both in the short them and the long run. Yes, babies who sleep through the night are a blessing, but not all can do this and they do not have the cognitive ability to learn good behavior through discipline. Besides which if you have a baby in the room with you at night it is less stress for everyone, babies have little tummies and are soothed by closenesss and mom doesn't have to go upstairs several times a night to feed an infant who might have been hungry for ages or isn't hungry yet.

I don't understand how this idea is in conflict with Christian thinking or why this research has been seen by one reviewer as in conflict with religion.

Was surprised to find the "Write your own story" book enclosed in this gift set. Would recommend to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Golden Book set.......2007-02-08

I bought this set for my grandson and am very pleased with it! It has five titles (The Color Kittens, Mister Dog, I Can Fly, Baby Farm Animals, The Jolly Barnyard, and The Happy Man and His Dump Truck) which are old favorites with some favorite author/illustrators, including Margaret Wise Brown and Garth Williams. The reason for buying the set AS a set, however, was the blank create-your-own Golden Book! I think this is a great idea and look forward to seeing my grandson's own story!

A much appreciated gift for 8 mo. old baby. "He loves his 'If You're Happy and You Know It' book already!", Mom wrote in her thank you note sent with a very happy baby picture!

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-05-29

My son is 18 months old and loves this book, as well as the others in this series. He loves the pictures! I love the fact that I can either read or sing the book to him.

4 out of 5 stars Very cute illustrations.......2007-01-19

My daughter likes this book. She loves the song, so this works for her. However, I don't particularly care for the made-up new verses.

5 out of 5 stars fun for babies.......2003-02-12

My baby loved this book from 3 months on. She loves when we sing the suggested verses to her and really relates to the watercolour illustrations of the other babies inside.

The 14 Book Beany Malone Set includes: Meet the Malones; Beany Malone; Leave It to Beany; Beany and the Beckoning Road; Beany Has a Secret Life; Make a Wish for Me; Happy Birthday, Dear Beany; The More the Merrier; A Bright Star Falls; Welcome Stranger; Pick a New Dream; Tarry Awhile; Something Borrowed, Something Blue; Come Back, Wherever You Are. The Malones of Denver, Colorado are a warm open-hearted family with a welcoming home, open to friends and all others in need of physical and emotional nourishment. The series has the warmth and sense of solidarity intrinsic of wartimes and the post-war era. There is a general feeling of peace and simplicity. When the series opens, the Malone children are motherless, as Mary Malone has been dead for three years. The father, Martie Malone, is often absent due to his duties as editor of the Denver Call. Three of the four Malone children, Mary Fred, Johnny and Beany, live at home. The oldest Malone daughter, the beautiful, loving Elizabeth, has been married to Lieutenant Donald McCallin for one year. The Malones live on Barberry Street in a large, wide-bosomed gray stone home. Their surrounding neighbors are Mrs. Morrison Adams (known as Mrs. Socially-prominent Adams) in her red brick home with immaculate white trim and frilly curtains in the windows, and the imposing and stately home of the Judge Buell family.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING SERIES!! IS A MUST READ!.......2006-06-24

I got the entire series this past Christmas. I had read the first 2 because although my library had more, they didn't have all of them, and they didn't have the 3rd and I don't like to read things out of order so I was really sad. So then I was soo happy to find out they were being republished by Image Cascading!!!

So yea I read them all and they all rock!!! It's nice seeing what teenagers did back in the 50's. And it was also nice how different people's relationships were with their family's, I wish it were more like that today. And they are also way more responsible and mature then we are now. Making their own money, not having to depend on their parents for everything. And their parents respect and trust them more too! And they definatly treat their parents with much respect which is ALOT more then I can say about kids of today.

The first book is about Beany's older sister, Mary Fred. It is in MF's junior year of highschool, when Beany is in 8th grade. The rest of the books are all about Beany, in highschool, college, and then when she gets married. And let me just say I LOVE who she ends up with. They are SOOO cute!!!

Everyone should read these books they are amazing and are definatly one of my favorite books ever!

5 out of 5 stars A Happy Introduction to Adoption.......2007-09-09

As an adoptive Mom, I get so tired of kids books that talk about being saddened or depressed by adoption. Yes, kids may need to talk through those issues at times, but I wanted a book that would introduce adoption to my infant daughter in a positive way. "Happy Adoption Day" does that beautifully, with joyful rollicking text and an explosion of colorful illustrations. This books is such a favorite of my (now 2 year old) daughter that I had to put it up on a top shelf and bring it down only by request because it was about to disintegrate! Read a more complete review and learn more about my adoption story at my blog www.kiddobeans.com

4 out of 5 stars Not for adoption through a public agency.......2007-08-23

I was a little disappointed this book only addressed going to another location for adoption. We adopted through our local DSS so it doesn't really pertain to us. We have an Adoption Day, but not like one described in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect way to remember a great day!.......2007-03-27

Happy Adoption Day is a wonderful book to help families and children celebrate the occasion on Adoption Day. As a social worker, I give this book to every child that is adopted into a loving home to serve as a momento of this special time in their lives. The message in the book works well with children who are adopted at birth, at an older age, internationally or who are of a different nationality than their adoptive parents. I would certainly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Adoption Book for children and families........2006-11-04

This book is the lyrics of the song by John McCutcheon. My daughter loves the song and having images to associate with it is just wonderful.

2 out of 5 stars I hope it records better than it reads........2006-08-15

John McCutcheon, Happy Adoption Day! (Little, Brown, 1996)

I have to start this review by admitting that I'm not the best sight-reader on the planet. In fact, I'm pretty awful at it. What do you want? I'm a drummer. I not only have a tin ear, I have one that was recycled at a cut-rate plant. So, okay, maybe I'm not qualified to be reviewing this book from a musical perspective. But even a drummer can recognize rhythm-- especially when it goes wrong. And there are some places in this book where it goes horribly, horribly wrong. (My nonmusical wife pointed out some of the same lapses in rhythm I had first wondered about.)

And here I offer the same postulate I have been offering, usually unsuccessfully (no matter how right it may be) for years: how you say something is just as important, if not more, than what you say. The message of the book is all well and good, but present it in a clunky manner, and you're either teaching kids to resent the message overall or to enjoy really substandard music. (Doesn't Radio Disney do enough of that already?) Awkwardly-phrased lyrics: not confined to rap any more. ** ½
