"Electric Circuits," 6th Edition by Dorf and Svoboda rates as the WORST text I've ever used in my undergraduate or graduate training. While it has many helpful tables and illustrations, the core-material presentation is garbled and not easily understood. This is complicated further by an inexcusable plethora of errors contained throughout the text. Though the authors are obviously knowledgeable in the subject matter, from me they earn a grade of "F" for their ability as writers. When used as an adjunct or self-learning text, where the student's knowledge comes directly from the textbook and without the aid of live lectures, this book is useless.

The following three textbooks cover the SAME material as Dorf and are much better suited as adjunct and self-learning texts. These are presented in the order of recommendation to you: (Monier is by far the best of all)

1. "Electric Circuit Analysis," by Charles J. Monier, 2001, Prentice Hall.

This text is EXCELLENT. As the chapter material and the math progress in complexity (up to LaPlace Transforms) the author inserts "math review chapters," which are especially helpful. The material is presented clearly and in an exact fashion in this book.

2. "Electric Circuits," by Alenander and Sadiku

3. "Introductory Circuit Analysis," by Robert L. Boylestad

Unless you're taking a lecture course directly from the authors or have access to a professor familiar with all the errors and quirks of this text, don't waste your time with it.

Horrible!!!.......2005-10-25

This is the worst book to teach basic foundation skills to future electrical engineers. It assumes that readers are genuises and is definitely not for beginners. It is very difficult to follow and understand. The examples are mediocre and the problems are difficult. It omits key steps in solving some of the problems. It's exponentially frustrating when your university prescribes it as a textbook.(Did the course coordinators even try to read it from a beginner's point of view?) It's only good as a doorstop, paper weight, a projectile to throw at a non-sensical, pretentious PhD student teaching the class(or at least that's what he/she thinks they're doing), or in extreme cases, a toilet paper. Horrible book! Good for bonfires though.

This book is for skilled Electrical Engineering Students.......2005-08-07

If you want a book that holds your hand and babies you through circuit theory, than this book is not for you. Mastery of advanced calculus, and calculus based physics is necessary.

Having said that, being able to understand what is in this book will set you apart from an EET. You use this book because you want to be an EE. (You know, the guy who is the EET's boss. hehe)

This is a well presented book for a skilled enginering student.
You will know more about circuit theory than the average joe tech will ever know.

Saying you can't understand this book is like saying you can't understand Advanced Quantum Mechanics because it has too much math.

Don't be a baby. Just take your 3 semesters of calculus w/ differential equations and 2 semesters of calculus based physics
and then and only then will you be ready for this book. When you are done with this book, you will be a certified EE genius :)

And tell the EET's that they will be working for you. HEHE.

This book ist not too different in quality from Nilsson, quite normal; some topics are explained okay, others lack a bit of depth in derivation. But the problems are not very fun to solve.

Enjoyable textbook for passionate students.......2005-03-07

This is a very good textbook for passionate students who have a solid background in physics and mathematics. It is not suitable for the average freshman, nor is it suitable for technical or trades students.

When I say a solid background, I mean you had better be an A student in physics and mathematics otherwise you'll gradually be left behind.

Dorf doesn't baby students with this book. High school education has been dumbed down disgracefully these days as bright students are "streamed" with the not-so-bright. School education is politically correct and has been excessively feminized and made "inclusive." That means bright students should find a good school, or work by themselves, and work hard.

This is not to say that readers who have problems with this book are not very bright. It could mean they've had a bad high school education or their college/university dumbed down their mathematics and physics courses in response to the high drop-out rates. You need to be *very* good with, as a minimum, first year mathematics (calculus, linear algebra) and physics (calculus based physics). Don't make this text your first ever introduction to circuits and things like voltage, resistance, current, and so on. You should have met all these in your physics courses! (I *did* say you need a solid background in physics, didn't I?)

If you have a bit of time before using this book, or you want to repeat a class that uses this book, grab yourself a copy of Basic Technical Mathematics with Calculus (SI Version) 8th Edition by Washington, and work your way from there with more advanced engineering mathematics texts. Also pick up Grossman's Elementary Linear Algebra, or Strang's Linear Algebra. Now get yourself a good physics text, such as the Six Ideas in Physics series, and understand it. It may also help to familiarize yourself with basic electric circuits by working your way through a more elementary text that doesn't use calculus (assuming you need to work on your math before using this text, of course).

Go for it!

Good addition to your motor control library........2002-01-30

Overall, the book presents fairly practical hardware solutions to motor controllers design from industrial, automotive, to appliances.
It is a good book for those doing motor controller designs. It covered power device protection well and author seems to have practical experience and says when he has or has not tried out circuits presented in the book.
For those doing a lot of detailed control algorithyms, like PID, adaptive etc., or firmware development, if you are using motorola microcontrollers, the example code works well, however since flow chart or description of algorithym is not presented, and is buried in the code example, you are out of luck. Also, I think if it expands to cover DSP, and multiaxis controllers, it would be great. More details on the actual applications of say
speed or torque control using position feedback like digital encoders may help those beginners in motor controls.
I agree with another reviewer that it is one of the better books on motor control electronics that is out there. Definitely, a good companion to a firmware book on controls or actual application notes on application of micro or dsp's in motor controls.

Comprehensive book on motor control.......2001-04-19

Excellent book covering all aspects of motor control. This book did a very good job of covering control electronics, intermediate drive electronics and power devices. In addition it covered distributed drive controllers, sources of noise, and design principals. It had examples of a range of motor drive types including AC, DC PM, brushless, etc. It relied a little too much on Motorola parts but all in all it was an excellent book and a valuable resource.

I have been interested in electric motor controls for use in robotics for some time. This is the best book on the subject I have found so far. The book assumes you have a fairly complete knowledge of IGBTs, Mosfets and a solid background in electronics. Lacks important information on 3 phase, two phase, and single phase induction motor operation theory. Has good description of various problems produced by variable speed drives. There is a good theoretical overview of variable speed drive techniques.

I took Art Appreciation 2 years ago and this was our textbook. It's a fabulous book that hits on many aspects of art. Starting with learning how to see art, Fundamentals of art & design, and Materials & Tools it leads through the different types of art (Painting, Printmaking, Photography, Sculpture, Drawing, Architecture, Crafts...). It hits on the different ages of art as well from Ancient China up through Modern Art. The book ends with Contemporary issues of Art. I personally found the discussion of Mapplethorp to be highly intriguing.

If you don't know a thing about art , this book is easy to read & tons of photos make it easier to understand concepts and ideas. If you know tons about art, you'll love this book because it reminds you of all aspects of are such as fauvism, earth art & installations. Even the anti-artist will find something to love in this information rich book.

Dubbed "Mr. Atomic Energy" by Congressional colleagues and friends in recognition of his 28 years as a member and 10 years as House leader of the House-Senate Joint Committee on Atomic Energy (JCAE), Democratic Congressman Chet Holifield of California's 19th Congressional District served 32 years in Congress, from 1943 through 1974, and was a powerful figure in atomic energy matters. This first biography of Holifield, in chronicling the Congressman's significant role in the development and course of U.S. atomic energy programs and policies, also serves as a history of the formative period of this new force in national and international politics. An early champion of atomic energy, Holifield's efforts contributed to the establishment of the Atomic Energy Act of 1946 and earned him a place on the JCAE. His 1949 recommendation on the H-bomb led to the development of this new weapon nine months before the Russians. An ardent proponent of public power in the 1950s, Holifield opposed the premature involvement of private industry in the development of atomic power and urged increased government participation in that area; many of his recommendations were later authorized by the Atomic Energy Commission. Holifield supported the conversion of the Hanford, Washington "N-reactor" to electricity as well as plutonium production, criticized U.S. civil defense strategy as inadequate, and championed both peaceful use of atomic energy and a "nuclear Navy." During the Nixon administration, in response to environmentalists" opposition to further atomic power development, the Congressman took the unpopular position that trade-offs between safety concerns and the public's need for increased amounts of electrical power were necessary. He also sponsored legislation that divided the AEC into the Research and Development Administration and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, a move that affected the course of atomic energy development well beyond his retirement. The first chapter is devoted to a biographical sketch of Holifield's life prior to his congressional career, while the remaining nine chapters trace his influence and contributions in atomic energy matters. The in-depth description of the Holifield Papers as well as the select bibliography will be of great value to scholars of atomic energy history. Serving as an introduction to the wide range of atomic energy topics and issues, this biography would be a significant addition to the reading lists for American history survey courses as well as being useful for seminars that have students investigate atomic energy history.

Fast read; interesting; moderately informative........2006-05-18

This is a very quick read that gives one a picture of the stages in the life of Charles II, with whom the monarchy was restored after the English Civil War and the Protectorate (dictatorship) of Cromwell. The book does not go very deeply into politics as they pertain to the business of governance or the life of the people of England, but rather considers politics only as they pertain to the fortunes of the monarch. Charles II was popular, and has remained so in popular conception, but the reality of his reign was largely the unconcealed use of public funds to support his extravagant and frivolous lifestyle. The book does allow one to glimpse this, and in general to see something of the power politics in 17th Century England, though the focus is much more on producing a simple portrait of a colourful figure.

Short overview of the Merry Monarch.......2001-03-03

If you don't want to wade through a large tome on Charles II, this is the book for you. It's fairly short, filled with illustrations, and yet hits all the important points of England's most popular rex. Charles II was a happening dude, with a love of life and people, and his ability to overcome his tumultous childhood and adult intrigues is truly amazing. This isn't just a pure bio, however, because as the title implies, this is also about the times of Charles II, and what amazing events took place. Plague, devasting fire, wars, regicides, you name it, the times they were amazing. So was Charles II, a magnetic leader, if there ever was one. The monarchy has been all down hill ever since.

Lady Antonia Fraser rules!.......2000-06-09

No historian writes history like Antonia Fraser does. The lives and times of Charles the Second were quite remarkable and both his predecessor and sucsessor were ousted from their crown but Charles II managed to gain the crown and keep it until his death. The odds were against him and he had to flee fatherless (his father Charkes the first was executed for treason) and penniless to the continent chased by Cromwell and his spies. Charles II was a complex person but one thing that can not be taken from him is that he was a consumated survivalist in a very dangerous political climate. Lady Fraser does an excellent job of recounting his lifespan and it is not often that history books read like a thriller. "Life and times of Charles II: Kings and Queens of England" is a page turner in the truest sense of the word.

Should have written the technical reference.......2007-01-29

This book would have been much more interesting if it had included more technical description. It might not have resulted in a non-technical book, but the majority of its audience is probably very interested in the technical bits. The devil is ultimately in the details, and this book could give the reader more without scaring away too many of us.

One of the characteristics of our power grid and large electrical supply systems is that electricity is generally consumed the instant it is generated. That is radically different from all other forms of energy where storage is used to balance demand with supply by storing excess supply for delivery later when demand increases. Liquid fuel and LNG tanks can be found everywhere, including in our "back yards", houses, and automobiles. Even our water systems have local water and pressure tanks to absorb pressure and flow variations. Only about 2% of electrical energy is stored in some way, usually in the form of lakes behind hydroelectric dams and batteries dispersed in many low power applications. There is very little storage availabe today to absorb local large scale power fluctuations. Many of the reacent rolling and some total blackouts may have been prevented if stored energy could have been added to the power grid in critical high power usage situations where transmission lines were congested and generators stressed to the max. The inability to provide sufficient power to the grid when desperately needed seems to invoke the laws of supply and demand to result in significant electricity price fluctuations -- even greater than the fluctuations found with fossil fuels, which do take advantage of substantial storage.

The fluctuations and mismatches between power generated and power consumed are, and will continue to be aggravated by the introduction of renewable resources where not only do loads fluctuate, but so do the sources.

Richard Baxter does an excellent job describing some of the emerging technologies that may be able to bring economical energy storage capabilities to the power grid, This book is written in an easy to understand manner. As any good reference book, the sections are self contained and can be read and understood without having to read the whole book. Nontechnical power grid stakeholders will be able to address the issues with a working understanding of energy storage

This book should be used as reference by any stakeholder interested in improving grid reliability and increasing renewable energy penetration in our grid.

This book should be considered by anyone interested in the new generation technologies or their applications in the energy industry. I like the way it is organized, including sections on electric, petroleum, and coal power storage. Electricity storage technologies and applications are discussed in depth in addition to renewable energy and storage.

It is written in clear language and structured in a straightforward manner. It contains numerous examples and insights from the actual developers throughout. The author also includes useful graphs and diagrams and a 12-page bibliography with numerous references as an easy next step for anyone interested in going deeper.

I've been active in evaluating new generation and transmission technologies in the electric power industry for many years, first with a major utility, and later as a Principal at my own consulting firm. Utility-scale electricity storage technologies have been around since the late 1970's, but only as demonstration units because of the limitations of the lead-acid batteries at the core of the projects. The technologies described in this book have shown progress since I've last looked into them, with some of them seeming to be on the cusp of real commercial utilization.

All in all, this is an essential reference book to quickly get up to speed on any of these technologies or understand how they are used. Buy it, trust me - I own a lot of these kinds of books and this is a good one.

As a management consultant in the power industry for more than 10 years, I can appreciate when a good desktop reference book comes along. I find Baxter's descriptions of Energy Storage technologies to be clear and to the point for someone who needs to gain an understanding very quickly. When I need more depth, it is there too, providing thorough descriptions of the technology's relevance, potential applications, and, most importantly, its limitations.

This is a book that I would recommend to anyone needing quick but complete access to all of the significant energy storage technologies on the market or in development. I would especially recommend the book to anyone working in the renewable energy field, as it provides quick guidance on how energy storage could enhance the economics of a renewable energy project.
