Magnificent..........2007-04-27
Miguel has given Modelers with taste for the extreme weathering not just A guide book but THE guide book for mastering these popular techniques and effects... This isn't a book to be read, it's a book to be absorbed and studied... I can't imagine the amount of work that must have went into it to produce the step by step pictures that are crystal clear and are the real treasure of the book... I HIGHLY recommend this to anyone interested in the art of model painting... WELL WORTH THE PRICE!!!

A MUST HAVE REFERENCE.......2007-04-18
For someone who is trying model building for the first or for the seasoned professional model builder, this book is a must have.
Easy to follow photographic references and step-by-step instructions on everything from model construction, painting, detailing and diorama building.
A bit pricey, but well worh the investment. I have been a fan of Mig Jimenez' work for some time now, and I know after reading this book Mig will have many more fans.
Just a side note, this book is a translated text, and thus some of the wording is a bit awkward, but still very easy to follow.
It's very good, but not perfect.......2007-01-15
This is a very good book and worth the money. However, there were some choices made in the writing that were, in my opinion, the wrong ones. The problem is this; a picture is worth a thousand words but words are valuable to. Mr Jimenez is an outstanding modeler and has pioneered a lot of the hyper-realistic techniques of filters and washes spreading throughout the hobby. However, many of the subtleties of his technique really need some explanation and guidance. This book doesn't do a great job with this. Written descriptions are short and sparse with a focus on step by step photos. The problem is, many of the techniques are very dificult to follow without captions. Had the photos had captions with them, this book would probably be the best armor book out there today, finally providing a complete successor to Shep Paine's and Verlinden's classics. Without them, the book is full of inpiration but also a fair amount of frustration in adding these tools to one's own toolbox.
Not just for armor modelers: railroad modelers find much to use!.......2006-11-30
I am a former armor and military aircraft modeler and so I know to go to forums and resources that most railroad modelers don't begin to think of exploring.
I found MIG's book a treasure trove of techniques for my railroad modeling. Granted, I will have to use his technique descriptions as inspiration rather than recipes. Most freight cars in the era I model were an oxide red and most steam locomotives were black, so the use of base olive drab and panzer gray...and the colors used to filter, fade, rust and enhance them would be different too.
But I have never seen a railroad modeling magazine article or how-to book describe filters or mapping. And yet the possibilities for these techniques in railroad model weathering are huge.
This book may get me back into armor modeling too, but for now, it is a treasured resource for my railroad modeling!
Pure modeling eye candy.......2006-08-15
Sure it's spendy, but you will spend countless hours drooling over this book by one of the premier modellers in the world right now. As mentioned, every facet of AFV modeling is covered in this publication. From equipment to the process of painting the entire vehicle, groundwork, accessories, etc.
Do not expect a lot of text to be included with this books. The techniques are covered with high quality color shots. Did I mention all the pictures in this book are color?
Just don't forget to add a bib to your order when you get this.
Book Description
The art of painting miniatures, both military and other types requires certain knowledge, occasionally very basic in nature, in order to obtain satisfactory results. From the preparation of the figure, regardless of the scale and materials from which it was made up to the final presentation with finishing touches, the work requires a meticulous and passionate application, as well as patience and hours of dedication.
In this book, the reader will find the answers to the most frequently asked questions when undertaking such a task, whether they come from novices painting a figure for the first time or confirmed artists.
The main techniques and different types of paints and enamels, most commonly used materials, factors to be taken into account before starting any such task, the most amazing tricks for imitating all sorts of texture and effects and many more, are dealt with in this book in a very convenient and visual manner, with concise texts, so that any enthusiast can improve his/her results and discover techniques that he/she has never used before, either due to a lack of knowledge or fear of obtaining unsatisfactory outcomes.
A clearly structured index permits the use of the book without wasting time and finding each answer with ease.
But painting a figure is not simply a purely pictorial work. The reader will also find techniques and advice for making his/her finished pieces more attractive to the observer, through the choice of the appropriate base, decoration, conversion and the creation of small terrains in which to set the figure. Advice for participating in competitions is also provided, as well as the most appropriate ways for conserving figures and avoiding their deterioration with the passage of time and elements as damaging as dust.
The final section is dedicated to the works of world renowned confirmed artists, in an attractive gallery of award-winning works with the most outstanding works at an international level in recent years. Here, the enthusiast can source ideas for creating his/her own works, or simply enjoy the works of the great masters.
This is definitely a comprehensive manual that will be of great help for miniature figure painting enthusiasts, whatever be their chosen theme.

Where is the beef?.......2007-06-16
After having done a great work with F.A.Q. AFV Painting Techniques, looks like Mig was just looking for some money but without the intention to work for it. The book is a collection of pictures with some icons indicating the technique to use.
It doesn't teach you anything at all. If you're looking for a barely nice collection of pictures, this is the book for you. If you want to learn something I recommend "How to Build Dioramas" from Sheperd Paine. Even if it is not the main topic, it contains much more information about figure painting than the entire F.A.Q.
Basic reference .......2007-05-10
Book is a basic reference for figure painting. Would only be of any interest to beginer figure painters.
Before you buy this book.......2007-05-07
This book is a fairly comprehensive guide to figure painting from preparation to presentation, and lots in between. It is beautifully illustrated with color photographs, and contains a very nice gallery of finished works in the last sections. It is presented as a FAQ format with some albeit simplistic questions about different techniques or materials associated with the hobby, but they often go unanswered. For some unknown reason, the author(s) have used a series of photos with some little hieroglyghs of paint/brush symbols to illustrate the answers without any accompanying text in most instances. Colors are also shown as little hard-to read numbers which you will have to look up in the included color charts at the end of the book, but it is like translating an arcane tome. A little text would have gone a long way to clarify some of the more complex methods such as getting textured surfaces representing fur or fabric. Instead I am left with more questions than before. What actually written answers appear in the book are often cryptic for example: Q:"How do I paint a leather Garment with oils?" A: "In order to speed up the drying process, it is normal to start over an acrylic base as shown in the photographs." or some are self-promoting, Q:"How can I make snow?" A: "There are specifically made products available for this." (next to the picture of Andrea Artificial Snow, hint hint) Many of the questions are just too simplistic. After all, I bought this book to learn MORE. Overall, I did not find this book particularly helpful, and it is rather hard to use. But with some effort I suspect one can glean something good from it, and like I said, it is beautifully illustrated.

The 'Bible' of miniatures painting.......2007-07-19
Dallimore has provided an excellent guide to the eye-catching 'Foundry' style of painting in this book. Clearly presented with illustrated step-by-step guides and a plethora of example images for inspiration - many historical eras along with fantasy, steampunk and sci-fi are all covered - this book is a must have for any miniatures painter, from beginner to advanced. The only criticism is that the paints referred to are all Foundry products (unsurprising considering the title of the book). However, conversion guides from Foundry to Games Workshop, Vallejo, Plaka and many other brands of paint are easily found online. Highly reccomended!
Great Miniatures Painting Guide!.......2007-05-21
I had been looking forward to picking up Kevin's book for sometime and was not disappointed with the purchase. Kevin's painting style is provocative and unique. In this guide he shows you exactly how he takes a primed miniature from start to finish in very easy to follow pictures and illustrations. This guide is the best I have read on the topic and loaded with wonderful pictures of beautiful Foundry miniatures.
The Definitive Guide to Miniature Painting.......2006-08-23
Kevin's book is a must have item for beginners, experts and everyone in between. At last someone has gone to great lengths to show what an interesting hobby figure painting can be. If you're a wargamer, role player or collector there's plenty in here. The book clearly describes a series of step by step methods for achieving professional results. The full colour illustrations are enough to justify buying this book alone. The methodical description of the painting process and the advanced hints and tips though make the book. Highly recommended as the only real source book on the subject
Book Description
Informed by both structuralism and poststructuralism, these essays by art critic and historian Yve Alain Bois seek to redefine the status of theory in modernist critical discourse. Warning against the uncritical adoption of theoretical fashions and equally against the a priori rejection of all theory, Bois argues that theory is best employed in response to the specific demands of a critical problem. The essays lucidly demonstrate the uses of various theoretical approaches in conjunction with close reading of both paintings and texts.

very nice cd.......2007-04-20
bough only the cd and not the book.. but very nice.. just need more brown skin female model (african-american or hispanic)...
Absolutely the best.......2007-01-04
The photographs are large and clear. The poses are natural. The models represent a range of physical types. The disk has 360° views of each pose. Wow! This is an invaluable reference for artists. Really the only game in town.
There's also a website where you can get additional poses. Highly recommended.
Variety is Key.......2006-12-27
When I first received this book in the mail, I was quite impressed with its quality. There are several models featured in the book, the lighting in the photographs is inoffensive, and the pages are beautifully printed. I soon discovered, however, that the book itself would be of little use to me.
While the book initially appears to provide an abundance of photographic material and a variety of models, a few flip-throughs will reveal that many of the poses and models are incredibly similar. It focuses mostly on the female figure and provides female models who, but for one, appear to be young, slender (but not athletic), and white. They are all heavily made-up, they have no visible body hair and their genitals (while intact on the DVD) are nonexistant in the printed images: they have been airbrushed out. I find this choice particularly offensive considering that the male models did not receive the same treatment, nor do they adhere to the same idealistic standards. The one female model who is an exception to being thin is also not white: though she is a beautiful and capable model, I feel it is unfortunate that she alone bears the burden of "otherness". Although the average western (American) dress size for women is size 14, and the majority of people in the world are non-white, there is only one model out of nine that reflects this reality.
Variety is not just lacking in the bodies of female models, it is also absent in their poses. The poses are, for the most part, very passive, static, and inactive. Although there are a few dynamic poses, the majority of them are constructed and trite, showing little or no tension in the muscle or weight in the form. This is an important matter to consider, since much of the DVD is comprised of different angles of the same pictures represented in the book. If you are looking for stiff, formulated and "feminine" poses, you will be no doubt satisfied.
The two male models featured in the book provide better material. they are different than one another, in age and athleticism, although they are both still white. Their poses range from active to passive, the more graceful ones reminiscent of Greek and Roman statues.
One of the biggest disappointments for me was the discovery that the lighting in the images doesn't appear to differ in any way, from one model to another. It is an all-over, seemingly directionless light, hardly useful to the artist in my opinion. It is so bright that there are few form shadows to be found on the models, and little contrast.
The images on the DVD-ROM are generously large, but strangely lacking in texture. I don't know if this is due to the way the lighting was set up for the photographs, or if the models were "touched up", but their skin looks flat and plastic. Even when an image is zoomed in on, rarely can there be seen any veins, muscles, wrinkles or pores.
I have not owned many other model reference books, but I have found that my anatomy books in conjunction with internet resources have provided me with more stimulus than this collection of poses. While the print quality exceeds older books of its kind, I do not think the book itself is a great reference. The DVD-ROM is more worthwhile, and the publisher's website provides some nice extras, such as free downloads and contests. If you are interested in purchasing this book, I definitely recommend visiting the site and having a look around - maybe even purchase some of their images available for download to see if you like them.
In conclusion, I think this set will appeal to artists who are new to figure drawing and to hobbyists who have not had much experience rendering the human form. To anyone else, however, it is simply more of the same.
A reference book for every artists' Library............2006-07-26
While no one book can ever address the needs of every artist, Art
Models comes
very close. In all my years as a student, professional artist, and an
instructor, I have never seen a pose file, or reference book that is in
any way
comparable to this volume. Most are produced in black and white, with
photos of
questionable quality, and are rather pricey. Not only is Art Models
superior to
anything that I have seen on the market, but the cost is about the
same, or
sometimes even less. When you consider the option to purchase the
additional
companion DVD containing the photos in the book, there is no question
that this
is a better value. I am highly recommending this book to all my figure
drawing
students.
A Wonderful Resource.......2006-06-16
This book and CD deliver just what they promise. Quality photos with a good variety of body types, and both men and women models. It's especially nice to see real women with curves included and not just spindly waifs or bathing suit model types. It's also a challenge to find male models and it's nice to have a couple of contrasting body types here as well.
This book/cd is an economical way to deal with the issue of how to learn/practice life drawing on your own time. I am a university desgin instructor and have drawn from live models in a classroom setting before. I compare this process favorably with my experiences. The book is well layed out and the images are larger than previous pose books that I have used. The real advantage for me is the CD. Using a video projector I can project a life-sized image on a wall and have a studio drawing experience. Better yet, I can spend as long as I want on a drawing/painting and the model never moves. I spent three hours on one pose, stopping and starting over several days, and I could pick back up and continue with the image right where I left off. Try that with a live model! The ability to zoom the high quality images is another great feature. Even working from a computer, I can lay out a figure porportionally/gesturally and then focus in on head, hands etc. to finish out details. The zooming can also help you set up different compositions within each pose making the possibilities almost endless.
A wonderful high quality resource for those who love working artistically with the human form.

Customer Reviews:
The title should read "Airbrush Techniques for Plastic Model Kits".......2007-05-26
Actually, this book was precisely what I was looking for. I had purchased
and read several of the other airbrush instructional texts and, while they
were great in their own right, they were too generalized for my needs.
Most of them start out with how to choose an airbrush, air supply options,
etc., but then get a little too generalized as I said. They tend to talk
about airbrush techniques as applied to automotive painting, tattoo art,
and what-have-you.
The bottom line is if you are interested in learning airbrushing skills
as they apply to the detailing of plastic model kits, THIS IS THE BOOK
YOU ARE LOOKING FOR. Not only does the author cover the usual subjects
such as airbrush/air source choices, he goes on to ventilation concerns
and solutions, choices of paints and protective coatings, and other
areas.
He also presents several project examples as instructions on conceptual
areas such as modeling vinyl figures, weathering (i.e., making something
look like it's been through real-life wear and tear), as well as all those
little details that transform your kit from an overly detailed toy into a
miniature representation of the real item. I was particularly impressed
by the chapter "Adding Dirt and Rust to a '63 Chevy Impala". Here he
describes some very simple yet convincing method of taking a respectable
model kit and making it look like something that belongs in a junkyard,
right down to the grimy whitewalls and windshield wiper streaks.
For myself and others looking to make such transformations, this book
is gold. For others, it's definitely a bit too specialized and will
definitely disappoint, hence my suggestion for the title change.
Great Info, Projects can help, but most are filler.......2007-05-11
This book helped me alot with my airbrushing skill. I wish he had written more of the general info as well as some beginner lessons. The projects are ok, I would do a coulpe mabey, but they don't help as much as beginner stroke, and shadowing lessons would have. More info on how to(try) do artwork with a single action brush. All in all a great resource.
How to Use an Airbrush.......2007-05-06
While not an exhaustive treatment of the subject, this is a very good reference. The foundation information needed to be successful in selecting and using an airbrush for model work is provided along with a variety of sample projects that demonstrate techniques. I had prior experience with airbrushes when the book was purchased but I did learn some valuable techinques and tips through the book.
How to Use an Airbrush .......2007-01-19
good explanation, easy to understand and the quality of the book he is excellent
More About How to Paint A Model.......2006-09-20
This is an excellent book but the title is a bit deceptive. It spends a little bit of time at the beginning describing airbrushes but does not go into much depth. There is not much on how to select a great tool. Instead it details techniques for painting models. In this, it does a very good job.
I bought this book because I wanted to learn about airbrushing for painting model railroad cars and structures but I know absolutely nothing about them. I still know very little. I did learn some fascinating ways to paint model cars, airplanes and figurines, though.
If you want to learn techniques for doing the actual painting, especially on hobby models, this is a great book. Its illustrations are lavish and clear as are the explanations. If, on the other hand, you want to learn about the brush itself in terms of choosing one and maintaining it, look elsewhere.

This book covers washing, cleaning, polishing etc your boat. There are instructions and a lot of ideas on household chemicals which can replace expensive boat-labelled products. There are a lot of product recommendations - not only generic advice. The downside of this is that a lot of the products described are not available in Europe.

great resource for the military figure modeler.......2006-02-01

How to Paint Realistic Military Figures.......2005-07-07
This book was exactly what I was looking for. I'm fairly fussy when it comes to my hobbies, and will only invest in something that I know is good.
It has lots of step-by-step photos and techniques explained in detail.
The authors are very experienced and do excellent jobs of conveying their many years of experience.
I highly recommend this book if you're interested in painting figures. Novice to experienced painters will not be disappointed, it's definitely a keeper that will be used many times as reference in the future.
A Very Good Primer for Painting with Acrylics!.......2005-04-19
Actually, I haven't seen the new edition of this book; only the original. The techniques of using acrylics for figure painting are explained very clearly and the photos are very good. Each stage of achieving the final result is shown. BEST OF ALL: The authors of this book do good work, so you know THEY know what they're talking about! Beware of another book on painting figures with acrylics...this was the first I've seen and is still light years ahead of the 'other'.
Book Description
Painting miniatures, though a relatively small sector, is one of the most widespread hobbies throughout the world. The modellers and painters prefer mainly military figures and model vehicles, closely followed by fantasy figures. However, painting female figures presents an alternative to these, taking second place among the preferences of many painters, perhaps due to a lack of knowledge or the difficulty it presents. From now on and thanks to this publication, all this is history.
When painting a female figure, one should simply be familiar with the appropriate techniques in order to obtain the picturesque effects that portray finesse, avoiding sharp lights and shadows used on military figures. Airbrush techniques, almost always feared by the majority of painters, provide really surprising finishes that can later be applied to other types of tasks.
The sensuality, glamour and eroticism that occasionally accompany female figures cannot be forgotten, making this publication an essential guide for overcoming the fear of this type of figure painting that can provide great satisfaction once the pieces are finished. This is undoubtedly a new style that breaks away from traditional techniques that are repeated in conventional figure painting.
The publication is designed in a very visual way, accompanying the reader with brief and concise explanations on the use of different techniques, illustrative step-by-step processes. The examples described include how to paint figures ranging from 30mm fantasy miniatures to large scale figures, as well as specific techniques for simulating skin, hair, lips and everything that comprises the female figure as a whole, in which sensuality is a key factor.

Female Figures.......2007-01-13
I purchased this for my husband for Christmas. He paints figure models and female figure models are one of the hardest to do, according to him. Lots of shading, etc. He was very happy to receive this as a gift. The edges were damaged when we got it, wrote to Amazon and returned it. We wanted a replacement. The replacement came a couple of days later before they received the damaged one back. I trust Amazon and their products. AMAZON is awesome.
Book Description
Reckless and dissolute in personality, but elegant and sensuous in his art, Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) is one of the best-known, and least understood, artists of the 20th century. This comprehensive and beautifully illustrated volume, based on new scholarship and featuring contributions written by distinguished American scholars, explores the myth that surrounds Modiglianiincluding his troubled personal life and his death at age 35and re-examines the position he holds within the history of early 20th century art. Focusing on his erotic nudes, portraits, and figures, Modigliani and His Models is also the first book to look at the lovers, models, and girlfriends who influenced his work.
Customer Reviews:
Good but not revolutionary........2007-05-06
Another beautiful exhibition catalogue (this one from the Royal Academy in London, 2006), this book is first and foremost a very well illustrated publication with top-quality images of Modigliani's best known portraits and nudes. Some interesting information on his models (lovers, friends, dealers, unknown), their origins, the role they played in his art and life also make for good reading. I would not say this is a breakthrough study that brings revolutionary insight on the artist's oeuvre, but it is still worth it as a satisfactory reminder of a good exhibition.
