Book Description

When is the right time to shear a sheep? Is there a market for manure? What time of day is best to collect eggs? What is the correct way to milk a goat? What does a duck eat? Can a cow and a sheep share the same pasture? Which types of rabbits are easiest to raise?

The perfect book for anyone who has ever dreamed of having that little place in the country, Barnyard in Your Backyard offers tried-and-true, expert advice on raising healthy, happy, productive farm animals: chickens, geese, ducks, rabbits, goats, sheep, and dairy cows.

Each chapter focuses on a different animal, discussing the pros and cons of raising the animal, housing and land requirements, feeding guidelines, health concerns, and a schedule for routine care. Species that are easy to raise, hardy, and companionable are profiled. First-time farmers will discover simple, clear instructions for caring for animals throughout the year, as well as guidelines for processing barnyard products such as milk, wool, and eggs. Combining practical advice from real experts, easy-to-use checklists and charts, a seasonal care calendar, and detailed black-and-white illustrations, Barnyard in Your Backyard offers a comprehensive review of the ins and outs - the tribulations and triumphs - of living with and caring for a small barnyard.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-09-09

This book tells you everything you need to know for the novice to the experienced. Suggestions for those who want ornamental animals to the getting down to farming people. Pictures are great. Highly suggest this book!

4 out of 5 stars great book!.......2007-08-10

This book works great and spells everything out very easily. Not the most comprehensive I am sure but I actually learned alot from it. I was mostly interested in chicken and sheep as well as ducks and geese. great book for a beginner like myself.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book, on various farm animals.......2007-08-08

This book is a wealth of knowledge! I own lots of books on raising ducks and chickens, and I this book matches up well with all of my other books. Why is this impressive? Because the other books I'm comparing this book to are books that deal with only one type of animal (ducks, geese, chickens, exc). This book gives almost the same amount of detail as my other books plus it covers: Chickens, Ducks, Geese, Rabbits, Sheep, and Cattle. If your going to raise three or more different forms of live stock as a hobby, this is the only book you will need. If your going to try your hand at commercial production than you will need other books to supplement this book. I gave this 4 stars because the chicken and duck sections were not quite a thorough as my other books I have on those animals (but it did come amazingly close). This is a no brainer purchase for anyone raising three or more of the animals listed above.

5 out of 5 stars Best farm book yet.......2007-07-19

Have read lots of books in trying to get spun up on hobby farm life, and this by far takes the cake as number one animal 101. It is well presented, covers all the facts and includes diagrams and discriptions. Will recommend to others as first resource to start with.

4 out of 5 stars it is what the title says!.......2007-07-05

if you've just moved somewhere with a little land and are thinking of adding a few farm-type animals to your yard, this is a great book. It will tell you the demands that each of these little furry/fluffy/downy creatures will make on you, your property, and your bank account! The author gives a great overview of each of the animals mentioned in the title. BUT once you actually purchase the critters, you'll probably need a book that gives more in-depth information, especially in the health area. A great book to help you make educated decisions about what to toss in your ark!!

Book Description

Your backyard can be the source of the best eggs and meat you've ever tasted. The answer is chickens--endearing birds that require but a modest outlay of time, space and food.As they learned to raise chickens, Gail and Rick Luttmann came to realize the need for a comprehensive but clear and nontechnical guide. Their book covers all the basics in a light and entertaining sytle, from housing and feeding through incubating, bringing up chicks, butchering, and raising chickens for show.Througout the book, the Luttmanns express their wonder at the personalities of chickens--the role of brash protector played by roosters, and the instinctive motherliness of the hens. Given some freedom and attention, these birds can become much more than the egg-and-meat machines of commercial hatcheries and broiler factories. Chickens provide backyard farmers with enjoyable pastime, as well as a supply of good food.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars practical.......2007-09-21

Good, practical information on a number of subjects related to raising chickens and problems one might encounter.

5 out of 5 stars A great beginner's Chicken Book.......2007-08-23

This little paper back book is full of useful information. We checked it out from the libary so many times it started to fall apart. I figured if we are reading & needing it that much, it's time to buy the thing! It gives you information on raising chickens, culling, & housing. It is easy to read and understand. This book is a must read for any chicken beginner.

4 out of 5 stars Great content...poor design.......2007-07-09

I learned a lot with this book, but the quality is awful. It looks like it has been poorly reproduced. The illustrations are not good at all. I wish they would redo this with quality typesetting and graphics.

3 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-05-28

This book is good for the beginner. However, I would strongly suggest having another reference in addition to this book. It was written in 1976, and some of the information is out of date (incubator temps and such). The strengths of this book are that it's easy to read, has a seperate chapter on roosters, and that they share thier own experiences and their own blunders. This book is a decent place to start, easy to read, and under a 150 pages. Not bad. I own "Keep Chickens" by Kilarski, "Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens", and "Chickens" by Sue Weaver as well. Storey's Guide To Raising Chickens" by Gail Damerow is more complete and up to date, but it's also more time consuming to get the information. "Keep Chickens" by Kilarski and "Chickens" by Sue Weaver are more up to date versions of this book, and Sue Weavers book in my opinion is superior of the three. If I had it to do over again I would have bought Sue Weavers book for getting up to speed, and Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens by Gail Damerow for more in depth information after I read Weavers book. Trust me I've looked at a lot of chicken books, and done a lot of reading. This book is decent, and it will give some good information, and I'm not sorry I bought it. However, there are better books out there. Gail Damerow and Sue Weaver have superior products in my opinion.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-08-01

This is an excellent book for a beginner. I'm a software engineer, didn't have any knowledge about robotics prior to this book, and yesterday I finished building my first robot - Kobi (Jacob, which is a rather biblical name but in hebrew also literally means 'will follow'... as it follows lines of course). Took me about 1-1.5 months to read, gather parts and build.

I live in Israel and didn't want to order all the parts from the web (wanted to get it fast), so I bought what I found in the stores, improvised a little bit (just a bit) and built Kobi.

The book takes you through the electronics, including all the parts and tools to use, and the body building (quite a simple body - adjusting a container). Well written, amusing, very readable, lots of pictures to show the reader how things are supposed to be.

This is my first robotics book. I chose it after reading the excellent reviews on it in Amazon, now I'm adding mine. This book greatly enhanced my knowledge (and practice) in robotics, and I already ordered some more robotics books to learn more.

5 out of 5 stars Beginning Electronics.......2007-06-29

This is an excellent book. It shows you with detailed pictures and explanations exactly how to use electonic components. Very easy to read and understand. I use it as much my son.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, Highly Recommended.......2007-06-17

This is an author who has the beginner in mind. Everything is well explained, no guess work. Pictures and diagrams everywhere. Extremely useful especially if you have low experience in hand work like if you're just out of college. I learns alot about tools, materials, and construction tips that I did not even hear about before. It's not only useful for getting started in robotics but also in electronics. I have an engineering education so I don't know if the author's claim of the information being self contained and no background necessary is right, but in any case, you will get a hell lots of information.

5 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for!.......2007-06-15

I'm just starting into robotics and have no knowlwdge of electronics. I was thus looking for a beginners book needed to get started. I found that this book "Robot Building for Beginners" to be the best book to start with, even better than the "Robot Building for Dummies". Having got a good start with "Robot Building for Beginners" I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series for more advanced topics.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book for jumpstarting a new hobby!.......2007-03-27

My 8-year-old son and I worked our way through this book cover to cover, and found real value on every page. It's intent is clearly on guiding the uninitiated through the design and construction of their very first robot. Along the way, it offers tons of really practical advice on how to pick out the right equipment, where to get the components you'll need, what various components do, and how to work with them. When we were done we had a pretty cool little line following robot, but more importantly we understood how it worked, why it worked, and we had the tools and know-how to take the next step toward designing and building our own creations.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2007-06-01

I love Nicky Epstein's work and think her creativity is amazing. However, other than the cover item, nothing in this small book was interesting. The directions are for a piece of fruit, 2 rather ugly small cases, a VERY ugly hat, etc. I returned this.

4 out of 5 stars Knitting Knuts Unite.......2007-03-16

I love Nicky Epstein's work, and this is a good book for new felters. Most projects are simple, with the one on the cover being the most complex. This is the one I made and I love it! However, maybe it was the wool I used or my karma, but I had to trim the ends off after felting the main piece of the bag to have anything near a rectangle from which to make the handbag. This wasn't mentioned in the pattern, so maybe it was just me--I was thankful I had the experience and confidence to cut off the widest part at each end. That said, I LOVE my bag and have gotten many compliments on it the two times I have carried it. It is stunning!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginners to the craft.......2007-03-13

This book is excellent if you want to learn the craft of felting. The projects are pretty simple to learn and the instructions are easy to understand which is the most important part if you are new to felting.

5 out of 5 stars Felting is fast, fun and fabulous!.......2007-03-12

I was looking for the perfect project to give felting a try. As soon as I saw Nicky Epstein's Beginner's Guide to Felting I knew this was the one. I had to make that purse!!! In 7 days I had this beautiful purse that I get tons of compliments on! The instrucitons were easy to understand--I don't consider myself to be that experienced of a knitter. I also like that the projects are different from what I've been seeing elsewhere. My 10 year old daughter loves the book too, and wants me to make her a smaller version of the purse.

4 out of 5 stars Nicky Epstein's Beginner's Guide to Felting.......2007-03-08

I love anything tht Nicy Epstein does..she's a unique designer. I think that I wish that this book had had a couple more items that weren't so 'boutique' and more maybe weareable..but then beginners do lern how to knit making simple things like ipod containers etc. Her instructions on felting were, however, exactly what is needed.

Book Description

Oils are perhaps the most versatile of all paint mediums. Yet for many artists oil painting is either shrouded in mystique or considered very difficult. Filled with clear, step-by-step instructions and surefire strategies, The Complete Oil Painter is an essential, one-stop guide to becoming an expert in every aspect of this medium. Artists will discover everything they need to know about materials (pigments, supports, canvases); tools and equipment (palettes, brushes); paint application (wet-into-wet, alla-prima, glazing, impasto); form and color (light and dark, expression, color mixing); exploring themes (still life, portraiture, figure painting); and much more.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars highly recommended book.......2007-08-20

This book is well organized, and offers practical information on the tools of oil painting, as well as organization and application. It does not give step by step lessons, nor does it suggest any particular style of oil painting. It is designed to aid the reader in whatever style or level. As a teacher of oil painting this is one of my most used books, and the one I recommend to my students.

1 out of 5 stars Not impressed.......2007-06-08

I purchased this book because of all the great reviews it received. I was not impressed. Everything was way too simplistic. If you're an intermediate or professional painter, you will not learn anything from this book that you don't already know.

5 out of 5 stars GjS.......2007-02-16

I was not sure what to expect having purchased other art books, but this is definitely a good book and I would recommend it to new and intermediate skill level artist. The Complete Oil Painter is well laid out and has much better example art than most books. I would highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Fancy dabbling with oils? Get this book.......2006-11-09

Gorst does an excellent job in walking the beginner through what they need and need to know to get started. It's promoted as being suitable for professional artists (I presume professional oil painters) - I'm not sure that an experienced painter will find much of use here. The images are good, providing an array of styles available with this medium. The subjects he chooses for the step-by-step practices are of a level of competancy not usually found in a beginner's book. Typically I've found the examples in other books to be rather bland - if you can reproduce the examples in here then you'll certainly have some paintings worth hanging.
My library of art books is approaching something like 250 items, covering all sorts of media as well as art theory, appreciation, history etc. The one thing that has struck me while pulling that collection together is, for the most part, Watson-Guptill produce an excellent range of books. The WG range aims at getting the beginner to an intermediate level ASAP and produce some quality art in the process, as opposed to the standard amateurish twee fare that other publishers, namely North Light Books, have folks churn out.
An excellent introduction to the world of oil paints. 100% Recommend.

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2006-11-02

It is idle time for understanding a management will allow you to accustom to a developing area of telecommunications quickly. Written by skilled experts of company Hill Associates - the leading company on preparation of technical experts in the field of telecommunications, this book contains the technical information necessary for understanding and application of key technologies.

5 out of 5 stars best intro to voice and data communications.......2005-06-14

If you only can read one book on the subject, this is it.
Written by experts in the field of computer networking and telco engineers it gives clear explanation of POTS infrastructure and data networking fundamentals, including the internet architecture. A lot of pages are devoted to "dying" technologies, such as X.25, ATM, and frame relay. Hot topics such as TCP/IP and Ethernet don't get enough coverage in my opinion. Even so, the book deserves 5 stars because even though it may not have everything, it does cover a lot and it does it well and with some sense of humor. There is no "filler" in this book. Besides, other books on the subject are ether too light (Dodd and Golenievsky), too technical (Freeman and Minoli) or
too wordy and biased towards telco point of view (Bates and Horak)
I must say I liked Horak's "Communications systems and networks" too -- it has a lot of complimentary and interesting details, historical notes and is written in a warm and loving style. I recommend you to read it before Hill's book if you are really interested in telecommunications.

5 out of 5 stars Great for a beginner painter.......2007-06-02

I found this book to be very easy to read and helpful with basic concepts needed for a strong foundation in painting with oils. I especially like the info about shading, color for impact and components to make your work more polished.

2 out of 5 stars a bit disappointed.......2007-04-09

I should have listened to the other reviews. The images are yellow toned and it makes it very difficult for a beginner to learn how to mix paint and get the right colors. The book also doesn't guide you on this matter which makes all the difference. I haven't used this book once.

2 out of 5 stars so so book.......2007-01-06

I read this and found only some info helpful. For a beginner this wasn't what I was looking for.

1 out of 5 stars many good tips.......2007-01-06

This book is written by an artist that has a lot of obvious talent and ability which is always a good start for how-to-paint books! His approach to colour particularly sticks in the mind. There are no complete step-by-step demonstations (beginning to end mapped out)- but many snapshots of some of the processes and some of the stages he arrived at before the finished product. Particularly useful for artists interested in landscapes and alla prima. I would recommend this as a book which complements an artist's personal tuition program - but not a book for complete beginners I wouldn't think.

4 out of 5 stars Good beginner instructions.......2007-01-06

I used this book when I first started oil painting, and have referred back to it since. It has good basic instructions - my only critisism is that every painting shown seems to be in the same colors! Everything isn't yellow, after all. I thought maybe there was something wrong with the photos - or else the artist just likes sticking to one color scheme. It did make me look at my own palette more critically. Now I consciously try different color schemes on paintings, just for variety - so maybe it was a good thing...

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for the beginner.......2006-06-18

I am an absolute beginner and knew nothing before I picked up this book, but found it easy to follow and a lot of fun. I spent as little as possible because it all adds up fast. Among the recommended supplies, I bought 2 round brushes, a bamboo brush, and a 3-inch hake, and got by fine without the others. There are 11 recommended paints for the projects. He describes the different paint grades (professional vs. student), and while professional are typically preferred, they are also more expensive. I was pleased with the results I achieved with the cheaper student grade paints and encouraged by the thought that they might be even better if I invest in better paints. All in all, I would highly recommend this book. You can start it without knowing a thing, and finish it excited about what you've achieved and the possibilities that lie ahead.

3 out of 5 stars May not be what you need.......2007-07-04

I thought this book was okay, a good overview. It was well written and thoughtfully laid out. It didn't wow me. This book is geared more for people who want to work on older furniture, mainly chairs. I want to reupholster my couch and love seat. In that respect, this book was minimally helpful and I'm going to have to buy another book to fill in the gaps. Keep that in mind if you want to purchase this book. Also, the author and much of the reference information is UK-based.

4 out of 5 stars upol.review.......2006-03-01

very informative, both books. The home book, was helpful in learning how to recover an armchair, and the auto book was helpful in seeing what I needed to do to mend a door panel with material. Very happy with the results.

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY! A BOOK THAT'S MORE THAN I WANTED!!!!!!!.......2005-12-08

I ordered this book because I wanted the "baby steps" version of upholstery. I have several books on this subject, this is the only one that motivates me, knowing--yes I can do it!

5 out of 5 stars Upholstery: A Beginner's Guide.......2005-09-12

I have glanced through the book. I am a self-taught upholsterer, with projects all around my home to do. I pretty much copy the existing pattern and method of upholstery as each project was originally put together. There have been challenges along the way with a few upholstered chairs. This book has color and detailed illustrations. I do own two other books by David James. I wish I had owned this book earlier.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2005-03-30

This is a really great book -- a sort of shortened version of his "Upholstery: A Complete Course". I think this is by far the best book for people who are interested in learning upholstery. It is superior to Singer's "Upholstery Basics" and makes Sunset's "Simply Upholstery," truly simplistic. They pale in comparison. All of David James' books are great -- very thorough and well written. There is an obvious difference in books that are written by those who love the craft and those that are simply informative. If videos were offered of what David James teaches in his books, it would be like having your very own private upholstery lessons!

1 out of 5 stars total waste of money!!!.......2007-04-07

this book was not helpful at all!!!i had just recently got into manga and anime drawing so i thought that this book would be helpful to me you know with the title being "basics for beginners" and all. all it did was show me useless information.all it does is show you characters made out of these weird rectangle type things only and then the finished project (but thats all no hair no clothes no nothing), instead of step-by-step directions on everything. if you are a beginner i would highly reccomend NOT, i repeat NOT getting this book!!! it confused me and didn't actually show me how to draw anything!!!if your a beginner and don't know where to start, your not alone!!! although this is the first book i ever got on the whole anime subject i would suggest some other how to draw manga books but definately not this one. try how to draw manga ultimate manga lessons volumes 1-6 and more how to draw manga volumes 1-4. believe me if you want, if you think diferently and want to try it any way be my guest but in my oppinion it's a total waste of money!!! hope this helped!!!

5 out of 5 stars Nice Book.......2007-01-10

Bought it as a Christmas gift for one of my nieces. I looked through it before I gave it to her. The book looks like it's got alot to offer. Maybe I'll get one for myself in the future.

1 out of 5 stars tasteless.......2006-06-28

This book tasteless. There are comics in the back of the book where there is a pedophilia scene. A young boy is seduced by a older man. It's not very nice. It also shows how to draw seductivley. This book is not appropriate for young people.

4 out of 5 stars It's awesome .......2005-11-06

I would recommend this for all beggining artist in magna, it has helped me alot, now i'm on the search for a magna book that teaches to draw clothing. This will really increase your drawing prowess
