The NEC Tab system is absolutley necessary in order to pass a State Licensing Examination. The test is usually 3 -5 hours long and depends upon your ability to quickly find the correct Chapter, Section or Table in order to provide fast answers. The Tab System allows you to rapidly flip to the correct page.

5 out of 5 stars Does anyone actually read these?.......2007-08-31

These are yellow tabs with writing on them. They stick to furniture very well which is the reason you dont leave them laying around for little children to find. Knowing how difficult they are to remove from funiture, Im sure they will have no problem sticking to a page. Just make sure it is the correct page.

3 out of 5 stars Motivation.......2007-09-21

If you want to be motivated or if the market is down and discouraging you. This book will inspire you to get back in the world of trading and teach you basic trading techniques that are still applicable today.

3 out of 5 stars Not that impressed.......2007-09-16

If your buying this book to learn how to buy stocks save your money. Nicolas Darvas isn't all that clear on his strategy and there are better books out there on the subject. On the other hand its a nice quick read if you like to read true success stories.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the time........2007-08-16

This book is boring- repeating the same experiences that didn't work with all the details on every one. What's good about it (there is some) is of limited value in today's marketplace, and you have to sort it out of all the filler. Overall, if you are trying to learn how to invest wisely- it provides more confusion that it clears up, and thus is a waste of time.

I've been managing my own investments for 7 years, and typically make about 20% annual. Neither novice nor expert, I read to learn more.. but like stocks- some books sound a lot better than they are. I can't see this book as being of much value at any experience level.

5 out of 5 stars The method of Nicolas Darvas makes sense!.......2007-07-15

How I Made $2,000,000 In The Stock Market by Nicolas Darvas.

Making money in stocks depends on what you think at the time you make an entry or exit. Not all investors think alike since every time you buy there is a seller on the other side or vise versa. (Zero Sum Game)
You either go up the staircase, stand on the staircase or go down the staircase. Very simple method to understand but most investors just don't get it and try to make trading stocks much more complicated. If you cannot climb the stair's why even be in that stock? Some trader's are even backtesting the Darvas method if it really works. There is no quick fix on WallStreet to learn how to trade. Nothing can backtest the coming future of any trade that is largely depends on your experience and your judgement and how you exit a trade.

The Darvas method is good read and good concept although a lot of reviewer's here cast their doubt's about this PRICE box method. Trading is a battle within yourself as you gain more experience to become a better trader. It takes time for you to set-up a method that works for you and have confidence in your own method. If you trade full-time it takes you less time to become skillful since you work at it every day even if you do trade using the Darvas method. The Darvas method is based on PRICE not on a stock indicator. When I think of the Davas BOX its like an old BOX camera they still work very well even today.

4 out of 5 stars He did it in a bull market.......2007-07-03

Nicolas Darvas wrote a very entertaining book. Maybe the fact that I'm half Hungarian added to the vicarious enjoyment. His early misadventures touched a raw nerve. His remarks about the high cost of trading in the bad old days reminded me of why I switched to an online broker. While reading the book I broke out in laughter several times.

I was so intrigued by the box model that I created a computer model to test it. The results were a disappointment. While I didn't test it with too many stocks, I ran the tests with growers like BLWD, AAPL, and CMG. Darvas stated that he invested in growth stocks even if he didn't call them that and I tried to mimic his style as closely as possible. To give an example, over a period of 18 month from Jan 2006 to June 2007, the model traded BWLD five times, two winners and three losers for a net gain of 11% over 18 months. Improving the stops might have increased the yield to around 16%. That's nothing to write home about. During that same period of time the Dow 30 advanced 16% (annualized percentages).

Some seven years ago I played around with another computer model based on crossing the various DMA lines. The stocks I used were the tech darlings of the bubble era. I used real price data from the '90s. The model made Warren Buffet look like a rank amateur, it was producing yields well in excess of 50% and it generated a very concentrated portfolio even when I fed it data for over 100 stocks. When I tested the same model in a bear market scenario it came out even, losing the trade commissions.

Why the long story? Because I'm trying to put Darvas' achievement in perspective. From Jan 1957 to Dec 1958 the Dow 30 yielded 24% annualized, about three times its long term average. Darvas used an enormous amount of leverage or margin, more than most of us can obtain today and certainly much more than I would ever be willing to risk. Darvas must have had very good income from his dancing to dare risk that much. He did keep is income and his investing funds separate. Darvas was also very astute in his stock picking. The Soviets launched Sputnik on October 4, 1957 and America was feverishly trying to catch up. Kennedy was a good speechmaker.

I believe that an extraordinary number of favorable circumstances came together in a very fortuitous way to enable Darvas to achieve his feat. From $25K to $2.25M in two years is an annualized return of 843%. As they say on TV, "Don't try this at home." :)

    Book Description

Paine was the impassioned democratic voice of the Age of Revolution, and this volume brings together his best-known works--"Common Sense," "The American Crisis," "Rights of Man," "The Age of Reason," along with a selection of letters, articles and pamphlets that emphasizes Paine's American years.

    4 out of 5 stars What a useful collection........2007-07-10

It's good to have all Paine's material in one handy volume. Plenty to read and think about. It's a pity he's not better known in the USA, considering his significance in the existence of the country.

5 out of 5 stars We have it in our power to begin the world over again.......2007-07-06

This was a required reading for a graduate humanities class. John Keane's biography succinctly showed that Tom Paine (1737-1809) was the consummate revolutionary and a daring adventurer. Not only was he an important figure in the American Revolution, but he also traveled to France in 1791 to give that revolution a push. Paine traveled from England, just in time to stoke the flames of the revolution with his pamphlet Common Sense, in January 1776. To call Common Sense a sensation in the colonies is actually a bit of an understatement. It was an unparallel sensation and monumental work of Enlightenment rhetoric that quickly fanned the flames of rebellion throughout the colonies. In four months, over 120,000 copies were printed in the colonies--over 500,000 copies by years end. No other pamphlet printed in seventeenth century America came close to its success. Most importantly, Common Sense served to get the colonial patriots to drop their fear of open rebellion, and also emboldened those delegates who favored declaring independence from Britain. The delegates now had the confidence that a large segment of the colonists would support rebellion. Similar to the Declaration of Independence, the philosophical ideas in Common Sense are primarily from the English philosopher, John Locke (1632-1704). The most moving quote from the pamphlet became quite prophetic, when one considers the impact it ultimately had on the delegates in the congress, the drafting of the Declaration of Independence, and on the world. "We have it in our power to begin the world over again."

As a graduate student in philosophy and history, I heartily recommend this timeless classic to anyone who is interested in political philosophy, and history.

5 out of 5 stars Teach Thomas Paine to all Ages.......2006-12-03

Paine truly is the forgotten founding father. Unbelievably, I never learned about him till college--and only then through specific history classes. In addition to this volume, I suggest one of my recent discoveries: The Elementary Common Sense of Thomas Paine; the 1776 document Common Sense adapted and illustrated for ages 11 on up. It is here on Amazon. Paine, and all of our country's founding documents, should be taught to kids early on.

5 out of 5 stars Most Important Founding Father - outstanding one-volume edition of his writings!.......2006-07-22

Thomas Paine was the most consistent and important of all the American Founding Fathers. He consistently spoke up in favor of liberty and freedom; for example, his opposition to the institution of slavery (which he argued was immoral and un-Christian and thought it quite contradictory to claim to be a Christian on the one hand and support slavery on the other hand) - Paine also spoke up in support of women's rights, freedom of thought, the poor, etc.

The important thing about Paine is that he practiced what he preached, as opposed to just about every other founding father (e.g., Jefferson saying all are "created equal" but owning slaves, or Adams "dismissing" his wife's assertion that they too should be included in the political process). I don't think we ought to condemn those individuals for the beliefs that they had, indeed they were products of their time period - and they are worthy of study. However, I also believe that we should praise those who were able to step out of that period and see things as they are, this is what Paine was able to do.

If you doubt Paine's importance in the history of American independence, consider the following; probably no other phamphlet brought the idea of independence to the mind of the colonists like Paine's "Common Sense" did and it was Paine's "Crisis #1" that was read to Washington's soldiers before they prepared for the biggest fight of the American Revolution. Paine's defense of the French Revolution in his "Rights of Man" sparked off a publication war that has yet to be matched and his "The Age of Reason" delineated the philosophical ideas that most of the founding fathers had with regard to religion (regardless of what the religious right would have you to believe).

Paine's mistake was not believing what most of the founding fathers believed, that the "common man and woman" was not intellectual enough to handle the arguments that he (and the others) were advocating. It was his consistency which brought about his downfall - this is a shame, because he is one of the most important thinkers to come out of the Revolutionary Period in American history.

    5 out of 5 stars Timeless inspiration.......2006-07-08

Thomas Paine, especially in The Age of Reason, did not put forth completely original ideas. Many of his contemporaries had the same critisms that Paine did in regard to organized religion especially Christianity. However, Thomas Paine organized such thoughts in a way that they were accessible to common men. Unfortunately his brave and inspirational work was his downfall. Closeminded and fearful citizens, like RICKITHEREADER in our modern times were frightened that perhaps Paine was tearing a hole the the fabric of their blind faith and because of this, Paines' last work, The Age of Reason, left him to die alone and impoverished. He was abandoned, even by his intellectual contemporaries, most who agreed with him but were not brave enough to voice their beliefs in the common vernacular. I was inspired by Paine who wrote, "My mind is my own church," which was not the voice of an atheist but the voice of a man who really did know the "truth" and his true path. Unlike RickitheReader, I have read both the bible and Paine with an open mind and heart. The joy of reading is the ability to let it lead you to new places. Thomas Paine would have said it better. Read this compilation and it will lead you to new places, wherever your faith is.

I'm back from Costa Rica and I can say this booklet is a good resumé of what you can see in that wonderful country. On 152 differents species shown on the booklet we saw 16 of them. I will bring it with me on my next trip in hope to see more.

I wasn't holding out much hope for value on this little "brochure" of wildlife but it turned out to be very nice to have. We just returned from a trip to Panama and Costa Rica and the guides - experienced naturalists with National Geographic and also from the parks and the Smithsonian - used it along with others. They are available for different regions and types of wildlife and I purchased two more when I was down there. Easy to carry on a hike, easy to refer to and great for the kids. They are certainly very basic but we were in isolated areas and some of us only got glimpses of an anteater or agouti so as the naturalists were talking about it, we could look at the guide and try to spot it again. Then if I only saw the tail, I knew what it looked like! Hiking up 300-500 ft. on muddy uneven trails with a camera in one hand, binoculars around my neck and a small backpack with water and such, it was hard to pull out a book for reference so if your trip is going to be at all like that, I recommend them.

2 out of 5 stars Pocket Guide Intro.......2006-03-16

This booklet was offered as a bundle with another book I purchased. The booklet itself is well done, but not very extensive re: the wildlife of Costa Rica. It seemed to be a bit pricey to me, even at a discounted rate, for what I received.

These are great for families, casual wildlife fans. For die-hard bird fans, you'll need the BIG Birds of Costa Rica book.

      Book Description

"Shaping Things is about created objects and the environment, which is to say, it's about everything," writes Bruce Sterling in this addition to the Mediawork Pamphlet series. He adds, "Seen from sufficient distance, this is a small topic."

Sterling offers a brilliant, often hilarious history of shaped things. We have moved from an age of artifacts, made by hand, through complex machines, to the current era of "gizmos." New forms of design and manufacture are appearing that lack historical precedent, he writes; but the production methods, using archaic forms of energy and materials that are finite and toxic, are not sustainable. The future will see a new kind of object -- we have the primitive forms of them now in our pockets and briefcases: user-alterable, baroquely multi-featured, and programmable -- that will be sustainable, enhanceable, and uniquely identifiable. Sterling coins the term "spime" for them, these future manufactured objects with informational support so extensive and rich that they are regarded as material instantiations of an immaterial system. Spimes are designed on screens, fabricated by digital means, and precisely tracked through space and time. They are made of substances that can be folded back into the production stream of future spimes, challenging all of us to become involved in their production. Spimes are coming, says Sterling. We will need these objects in order to live; we won't be able to surrender their advantages without awful consequences.

The vision of Shaping Things is given material form by the intricate design of Lorraine Wild. Shaping Things is for designers and thinkers, engineers and scientists, entrepreneurs and financiers -- and anyone who wants to understand and be part of the process of technosocial transformation.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Techno-futuristic ruminations on "spimes" and sustainability.......2007-08-31

Type a few words into Google and you can find a sushi restaurant, a movie theater, concert tickets or a new car. But if you misplace your car keys in your house, you still have to search the old-fashioned way: room by room, cushion by cushion, coat pocket by coat pocket. If Bruce Sterling is correct, though, one day you'll Google your keys. And your shoes. And your dog. This is the nascent "Internet of things" made possible by technology, including such items as radio frequency ID tags and traceable product life cycle management. That is where technology is going: to the interactive "spime," Sterling's term for objects that will arrive with data attached. In this visually arresting novella-sized essay, Sterling riffs on a number of scenarios, from customized-to-order cell phones to products that "know" how much carbon their construction required. His aphoristic prose seems at times like madness, but there's method in it: Sterling urges designers to make beautifully sustainable products rather than more proto-trash. We believe his book could reform your ideas about design and provide a stock of carbon-neutral insights you can deliver to your colleagues over a recyclable cup filled with shade-grown coffee.

2 out of 5 stars This book is a little too short. .......2007-08-08

This book is 'wafer thin', I would recommend John ThakorsIn the Bubble: Designing in a Complex World instead, it is goes into a lot more depth, but is still a sci-fi.

      5 out of 5 stars A tool, in a way..........2007-07-19

This is such a short read, and such a good read - it really is a tool, more of a reminder. The way some people put a model of their dream car on their desk, to remind them their goal, this book should be kept around, read once or twice a year to remind oneself to put purpose, intelligence, and diligence into what you create. I think I'll start giving copies of this to new employees...

5 out of 5 stars Setting the agenda.........2006-12-15

If you're looking for a book on sustainable design, the intertwining of the informational and the material, and RFID, look no further.

Sterling's account is more than a book for designers. Though some angles tend to originate from design-related topics, the implications and responsibilities pertaining to design cannot belong to a community of designers per se.

That's a pretty self-evident idea of course, but allow me to elucidate.

When Sterling argues that "we need a designed metahistory", this pertains to the idea that the information that is related to objects / spimes / shaping things needs to be designed. Given the fact that more and more objects are tagged, and thereby enrolled in a global information architecture, this implies that 'design' has the ability to influence the way we relate to object-data.

And this is by no means a scenario that is sci-fi: take the EPCglobal architecture as an example. Sterling is perfectly aware of this.

For me, the book provided a framework in which many more things can be deployed.. But I suppose the book's effects will depend on the mindset of the reader. The capacity of the book to create new concepts and new levels of thought is obviously there. To me, the ability of a written work to do this is what makes a book great.

5 out of 5 stars important work for more than just designers..........2006-06-05

...or perhaps it's just that "design" is an extremely broad category. Sterling presents a futurity that is at once realistic and utopian, frightening and hopeful.

This book would be useful for not just anyone designing anything, but anyone concerned with the future, how to achieve real sustainability, or how all that geeky stuff (you occasionally read about in the Wired you pick up at the airport) will really effect you.

I agree with another reviewer that the actual print design of the book is a hindrance, which is ironic; my distaste for it was only made worse by having already heard Sterling brag on it during a talk. But even with this beef, I have to give it a full five stars based on the content alone.

As a newbie to Greek, I had written dozens of little notecards with lots of hints and helps which were strewn all over my work surface. Once I got this study guide, I was able to file all of them. What a tremendous help! Thank you, Dr. Mounce!

5 out of 5 stars Greek for the Rest of Us - a great beginning into the world of the Bible.......2006-11-08

As everything Bill Mounce writes (I have bought them all), this is a fine, well put-together book to introduce the main language of the New Testament to new learners. It can serve as a first step in schools/seminaries for those without any previous language exposure, as a kind of up ramp rather than a staircase. Of itself, with a lexicon (Greek/English dictionary), it will let many beginning students, clergy without Greek studies and interested laymen to read and get a basic understanding of the language in which most of the New Testamant was written. They would also be better equiped to use various word study and Bible commentaries presented in English, but which use/show the Greek words behind the English. Bill has put in a special section that concentrates on this useful area. As with others of his books, he has included PC based resources to make learning easier.
One of its other valuable aspects is the excellent review of basic grammar for those who have never seen an inflected language with its many case endings and verb tenses and moods, as Old English used to have, but which it has mostly lost. Few students have studied Latin these days (it was required in my high school and was of great use to me as a bridge to Spanish and a deeper understanding of Latin-derived English words). Older Greek texts assumed that students knew Latin and taught accordingly. Dr. Mounce does not assume this and so his book will be great way to ease into Greek, even giving the reader a better understanding of English.

In summary, this book fills the gap between a typical modern high school level of language study and the more difficult first year college/seminary beginning Greek course very well. It will allow a student who wanted more to breeze through the first months of a standard seminary Greek course, while the overview of the whole language it gives would make ongoing learning much easier. I highly recommend it as a required book for all Christian seminary students as well as for those who are trying to learn more about God's Word on their own. It will allow both a window into the language in which Christ's Words were first recorded and the start of a wonderful journey into the beautiful language of Greek. He even gives a chapter on an overview of Hebrew. I highly recommend it, as well as it logical follow-on, Basics of Biblical Greek, also by Dr. Mounce, with all of its workbooks and vocabulary guides (all on Amazon). Of the many Greek texts I have, this pair is the best for today's student. A last comment: this is a good place to start for the student of Classical Greek as well, and for the same reasons. By the way, Bill Mounce makes learning Greek (almost) fun.

5 out of 5 stars Great "Cheat Sheet'.......2006-08-31

This is a wonderful way to quickly recall important ponts about New Testament Greek without feeling like you are cheating. It is a great reference guide that is pre-punched and fits easily into a notebook for easy and quick reference.

      5 out of 5 stars Greek Reviewing.......2006-02-17

This has proved to be an affordable, but extremely valuable study tool for Greek Grammar class. It has most everything important that's needed for quick reference. There are a few things that I would have liked to have seen on it also, but overall I was very pleased with this study tool.

      Book Description

We all know that today's architectural design has moved from the sketchpad to the screen the era of the Mayline and the drafting board now seems downright Paleolithic but techniques for using the computer not just as a tool for rendering but as a generative instrument remain woefully unexplored. In Tooling, the latest installment in our renowned Pamphlet Architecture series, the technologically progressive young firm Aranda/Lasch illustrates how advanced computational methods and algorithmic codes can be used to foster architectural design.

Tooling explores patterns generated by computer codes that in turn create an organizational template assembling projects. By openly sharing these codes, the authors seek to foster further investigation into their methods, allowing other architects to model and evolve more critical and insightful geometries and patterns.

5 out of 5 stars suggested for digital designers.......2007-07-28

as an architect, i find this book fascinating. but it is not in any way limited to the practice of architecture. its relevance extends to all fields of design, and probably into fields of which i am not familiar. its a 'must have' in my opinion.

4 out of 5 stars takes the admirable risk to make some projects.......2007-06-21

Most of these spript-based architectures remain in an isolated, abstract, computer space, and few of the projects in this book have been built either. Yet this book takes some risks other computer designers haven't yet taken, in terms of tying the scripts to architectural institutions and real places (the Las Vegas project), or archetypal architectures, like the grotto project. The results still feel naive and in-process (IMO), but as a book it's one of the better justifications for the future of script based architecture.

      4 out of 5 stars action .......2007-01-10

The book updates the latest trend and concept of architectural actions. I find it very useful tool to have.

4 out of 5 stars A good startpoint for learning about scripting and algorithmic design.......2007-01-03

This book provides a general idea about scripting and algorithmic design to those interested in this new medium of design in architecture. I personally have known the authors and they're experts in this field.
