colorful approach to composition.......2007-07-20
some author/artists have a unique ability to provide the right image and word picture to illustrate a concept. This artist & this book demonstrate that particular talent. It is an inspiring book that will cause your palms to itch with anticipation for an opportunity to try the ideas for yourself.
Wonderful way to paint!.......2007-07-12
At first I was afraid of negative painting, but now, it is so relaxing and the outcoming is always delightfully surprising!

Criticism for the public school system in the United States is nothing new; kids of all skill levels are slipping through the cracks at every age and in every city. Rather than attempting to change the system or point out it's failures, Jonathon Mooney and David Cole have created a practical guide to help kids jump through the necessary hoops to achieve whatever larger, postschool goals they may have. While much of the material is written for kids who've received the label LD or ADHD, many of the suggestions can be just as helpful for those who've been labeled "gifted," or any other student who feels frustrated with the daily routine of standard education.
The introduction (personal histories of the authors) is great reading for parents of LD or ADHD kids, and much of it has a humorous tone that makes it equally appropriate (and approachable) for discouraged adolescents. From the terror of weekly spelling tests to the few inspiring teachers and tutors the two encountered, the tales are equal parts entertaining, poignant, and encouraging to others who may well be experiencing quite similar events. There's little discussion of what methods are right or wrong--ultimately, both authors take a fundamentally pragmatic view, and it's "right" if it worked. A steady focus on study skills fills the majority of the book, and Mooney and Cole take what are generally pretty familiar stands on note-taking and test preparation and break them down into easily digestible concepts. With different methods for different types of learners (visual thinkers are encouraged to use maps and brightly colored markers), students will find plenty of help in creating notebooks, focusing their attention, and even appropriate ways of conducting the infamous all-nighter. Including information on how to recover lost class notebooks, how to make the most of a syllabus, and "The Seven Habits of Highly Disorganized People," Learning Outside the Lines provides students with plenty of tools to further each reader's personal idea of success. --Jill Lightner
Book Description
Learning with YOUR purpose in mind -- not your parents', not your teacher's, not your school's
Every day, your school, your teachers, and even your peers draw lines to
measure and standardize intelligence. They decide what criteria make one person smart and another person stupid. They decide who will succeed and who will just get by. Perhaps you find yourself outside the norm, because you learn differently -- but, unlike your classmates, you have no system in place that consistently supports your ability and desire to learn. Simply put, you are considered lazy and stupid. You are expected to fail.
Learning Outside the Lines is written by two such "academic failures" -- that is, two academic failures who graduated from Brown University at the top of their class. Jonathan Mooney and David Cole teach you how to take control of your education and find true success -- and they offer all the reasons why you should persevere. Witty, bold, and disarmingly honest, Learning Outside the Lines takes you on a journey toward personal empowerment and profound educational change, proving once again that rules sometimes need to be broken.

Why all the swearing?.......2007-09-11
I haven't read this book, I was thinking about buying it and read the excerpt online. It might be great, but I wouldn't want my kid reading any book with the "F" word on every page. I think it's unfortunate. Just my opinion.
This book saved my 1st semester @ Grad School!!.......2007-08-05
I had leafed through this book one day in the library and it looked interesting. So, I bought one and I keep it with me always! I use it like a reference book. I found the chapters on reading and writing for people with learning disabilities the best. Once I started using the techniques, I saved my semester and my Grad School career! I was on academic probation and had to pass all classes (I'd gotten an "F") before. When I came back to try Grad school again, I had two "D's" at mid terms my first semester back! I read the book from cover to cover and kept it with me after that. I went from two "D's", a "B", and an "A" to two "A's", a "A-", and a "B" over the next six weeks. By the time finals came I was in the clear. The next semester I got straight "A's" for the first time in my life! All using techniques from this book! You have to get it. If you have ADHD or another learning disability like I do, it will help for sure!
A must have book for those intelligent people with ADHD.......2007-07-13
I purchased this book after hearing Jonathan Mooney speak one evening last February at a local school. I have shared his story with many and have purchased several copies of this book and have even given it as "graduation presents" for some kids headed to college. Its a must have...
LD is not a prescription for failure!.......2006-12-14
Learning to learn can be quite a difficult task, just ask Jonathan Mooney and David Cole, two individuals diagnosed with learning disabilities and ADHD at a young age. But, it is not impossible. Through sheer determination and a disciplined regime, these two young men blossomed into honored Ivy League graduates. They forged their own paths and refused to let their learning difficulties define who they were or how successful they could be.
Learning Outside the Lines, provides intimate stories of pain and hardship to give us a sense of what it is really like to grow up with a learning disability. But more importantly, it provides those diagnosed with learning disabilities advice and guidelines on how to succeed academically.
This book is most beneficial for students in their teens who have been diagnosed with a learning difficulty and struggling to make sense of it all and looking for a way to effectively tackle a variety of academic tasks. It is also an amazing informational resource for anyone who has a child or student struggling in school.
For those of you who have been diagnosed with a learning difficulty, I would like you to take Jonathan Mooney and David Cole as examples of how you can succeed in life when everyone and everything seems to be against you. Know that having a learning disability does not mean that you can only go so far in life; you have the potential to do great things.

This is a great book for anyone who has trouble reading from top to bottom or beginning to end. Those who start in the middle and skip around or read toward the front will recognize themselves. Its been 30 years since I finished college and a few less since finishing law school. I still use many of these techniques every day. I laughed my way through the book because I kept thinking "Hey, I used to do that." Don't miss this one. Thanks to the authors. I'm sure we could be friends.blewin

a real talent..........2004-11-22
There may be some who are envious of this artists skill and there may even be some who genuinely don't like her work. Either way, one would have to be a fool NOT to recognise her immense talent. Anyone who knows any real Artists will understand how themes and colours can be repeated, this is not a bad thing in itself, even the the Great Masters did it, though unfortunately not all of their works survive in order to prove it.
Alexandra should be an inspiration to everyone, (including art teachers) and if everyone had the great fortune to see her work face to face, they'd realize that.
For me, she's got it........2002-03-22
I like what I see. I could care less whether some art critic/teacher thinks her work is repetitive or not developing. I love the use of color and her inspirational themes, which I find lacking in the art world of today.
Very repetitive- and, let's face it..........2000-07-15
She's not *quite* a master yet. I am an elementary school art teacher, and over the years I have observed more extraordinary child-artists than Alexandra Nechita. Her paintings are extremely repetitive and in the process of this book her art doesn't develop at all.
cubist.......2000-06-09
The pictures are repetitive and there does not seem to be any growth in her work.
Behind the scenes of the young master's early works.......2000-04-05
Destined to become one of the greatest artists of the 21st century Alexandra Nechita amazed the world at an early age with her unique mix of a several modern artistic styles. Like many of the great abstract works by Picasso, Chagall, Klee, Matisse, and Miro her work captivates the story of life through the use of vibrant colors and the unique shapes. Even in just the last year you can trace the process of refinement and experimentation that has occurred in Nechita's work. "Outside the Lines" chronicles a large number of her paintings from 1995 through the use of photos and accompanying description, in her own words, of what Nechita was trying to accomplish with the work.
Although my personal tastes align more with the types of work she has been producing in the last several years this book should be on any Nechita or cubist art fans bookshelf. Unfortunately there are currently no mass-published books that cover her more recent works. The only other book available is the one that purchasers of the lithograph pairs of the recent "My Journey" portfolios receive.

Book Description
Like a modern-day Don Quixote, Joe Kurmaskie—bike adventurer, writer, and twelve-year-old boy trapped in a man’s body—wanders the world on two wheels, often with hilarious results, in
Riding Outside the Lines.
A jaunt through such far-flung locations as Ireland, Australia, Mexico, South America, and beyond, here is a collection of tales woven together with one central theme: the world is a much smaller place when you view it from the seat of a bicycle.
Whether he’s weekending in the buff after accidentally stumbling into a nudist colony wedding, knocking back red wine in tin cans with a gun-toting ex–bounty hunter, combing the countryside in a quest to find the all-girl bagpipe squad he met in his dreams, or playing a rousing game of ice golf on the frozen tundra, Joe Kurmaskie writes of his gonzo global trek in a spirit infused with insight, good humor, and optimism.
Riding Outside the Lines encourages travel buffs and armchair explorers alike to get on your bike and see the beauty of our planet and the colorful souls who populate it.

For the free cyclist.......2007-05-16
I was laughing so hard reading this that my husband came in to check on me because he thought I was crying.
Having read all 3 of Joe's books, I was inspired to check out his website and find out what he is up to now (he is running Camp Creative to rescue America from the couch).
Cycling will save America, and these books are what will bring the rest of my family (somewhat taken aback by my recent cycling obsession) over to Our Side.
I'd recommend this one for the single cyclist, Metal Cowboy for anyone, and Momentum is Your Friend for the cylist with family.
The Metal Cowboy's 2nd offering will not disappoint!.......2007-02-23
[...]
A while back I reviewed Metal Cowboy by Joe Kurmaskie which I thoroughly enjoyed. Joe is an amazing writer with a flair for getting to the best of a situation or person and he always has a way of making me laugh out loud while reading his tales. After finishing Metal Cowboy I immediately went out and picked up the follow-up called Riding Outside the Lines.
In Riding Outside the Lines Joe tends to focus more on his international adventures which made for a nice change of pace coming off of the mostly U.S. centric Metal Cowboy. One line in and I knew I was hooked again. I wouldn't be able to put this book down until I finished it off.
The cast of characters this time around was impressive. I always wonder how he meets such interesting people time and time again. My favorite stories in Riding Outside the Lines took place in Ireland because I had spent a decent amount of time there and backpacked across the country with Laura (I hope to someday ride across Ireland but that's a whole other story).
Joe is a masterful storyteller and this book showcases that talent. His descriptions truly bring the people to life in your mind and you begin to feel like you are there with him every revolution of the pedals. In fact, I call Joe by his first name now as if I we were lifetime friends. It's pretty crazy!
From his run-in with the local lifeguard trainees in New Zealand to the the brush with death in Ireland that lead him to the best impromptu B&B in the country to the mountain biking trip that ends the journey in Mexico Joe shows us what it means to be alive and that people, while they have their problems, are generally good and kind. The book is a great read for cyclists and non-cyclists alike and I guarantee you'll become engrossed in Joe's stories within a page or two.
Needless to say I have since purchased Joe's most recent and third book called Momentum is Your Friend and am eager to read it. In Momentum Joe takes along his two young sons on the journey which should yield some interesting stories.
Why am I not jumping into that book right away you ask? Well, I picked up Miles from Nowhere by Barbara Savage which I am going to read first. I actually got the name of the book from the chapter in Riding Outside the Lines where Joe nominates people for cycling sainthood. Barbara is one of the nominees and in the paragraph about her Joe calls Miles from Nowhere the cyclists bible. After that kind of recommendation how could I not read it?
Please go check out Metal Cowboy and Riding Outside the Lines when you have a chance. They are top notch reads and will really get you thinking about what you want out of life. Ride on!
Fantastic.......2007-02-11
Joes adventures are fantastic. The story telling is good and I like particular the mix between meeting people, funny situations, and the bicycling itself. That makes the book a great travel book, a great cyclo touring book and, just as important, a real funny book. Highly recommended!
He knows something and he's willing to share it with us...........2007-02-07
I bought this book about 2 days after starting "Metal Cowboy." Joe Kurmaskie's storytelling makes something so foreign to most of us (bike touring in the extreme) seem so possible. Why not get on a bike and ride to the coast? Why not chase a bagpipe troupe across Ireland? Now, I'm not going to start wearing a "What Would Joe Do?" bracelet or sell my earthly possesions to take his message to the streets, but I am challenged to try something a little outside my everyday existence.
metal cowgirl.......2005-12-14
Joe Kurmaskie you have done it again! I loved the first book that Joe wrote, "Metal Cowboy", so I just had to read the sequal. As a fellow metal cowgirl, I can relate to Joe's love of biking down that long and winding road. The way he weaves his stories of the people he meets along the way is what keeps me reading his books. The chapter that I just loved and had many laugh out loud moments is "Sign Language." The great mishaps of bulletine board messages are a great way to pull in all the unique view on a bycycle. If you are a biker , this is a must read.

Book Description
All of us yearn to be creative, but few of us feel we truly are. In this fun-to-read, energy-packed guide to stimulating our ingenuity, Hendricks proposes a nine-step process for unleashing an exciting spark of creativity and innovation in our lives, including creative approaches to problem solving such as mind-mapping, storyboarding, brainstorming, and five-sensing. With dynamic examples and proven concepts, Hendricks helps us to identify roadblocks that may keep us from being creative in our lives and ministries, and helps to unleash our creative potential.

A creativity book written from a Christian perspective...suitable for first timers only!.......2006-10-28
Color Outside The Lines
by Howard G. Hendricks
This is a creativity book written from a Christian perspective. Its principal title is certainly catchy. The author is Distinguished Professor & Chairman of the Center for Christian Leadership at Dollas Thelogical Seminary. This book is targetted primarily at pastors, evangelists, missionaries, Sunday school teachers & anyone else whom the Lord has called to serve.
The secondary title. which reads 'A revolutionary Approach to Leadership' is somewhat misleading. Actually, I have been carried away by this secondary title & I also did not realise that the book has relatively heavy religious undertones.
After reading it, I regret to point out that the intellectual contents of the book do not stand up to this secondary title. I can only say that this book is more appropriate for a first timer, who is interested in creativity.
The nine steps process mentioned in the book is definitely not revolutionary. In fact, they are the standard fare found in most creative thinking books. They refer essentially to:
- brainstorming;
- Plussing - involves continually adding to a thing with a view to making it better & ultinately the best;
- Five sensing;
- Objection countering;
- gaming - there are two broad categories of gaming: competition & simulation;;
- mind mapping;
- role playing - using the four roles defined by Roger von Oeach;
- thinking hats - based on de Bono's system;
- storyboarding;
Even the Creative Problem Solving process is drawn from the Creative Problem Solving Institute (CPSI), which has its origins from the work of Alex Osborn & Sidney Parnes in the fifties.
The examples given in the book are also very common & easy to solve in the first instance.
What intrigues me most is the apparent failure of the author to dovetail the entire creative problem solving processes into the leadership process.
I wish to reiterate that, for a first timer, this book is still worthwhile to be pursued.
For others, I would suggest pursuing Paul Sloane's 'The Leader's Guide to Lateral Thinking Skills' as a viable alternative.
a MUST read for educators.......2006-04-27
COLOR OUTSIDE THE LINES BOOK REVIEW
Throughout the book, Howard Hendricks focuses on the importance of creativity as a necessary component of education. Yet, Hendricks transports this creative priority outside the traditional bounds of educational circumspection and infuses the subject with an intensity that necessitates immediate implementation. He continually underscores his deep convictions that modern Christians must find new and fresh approaches for sharing the Good News in the "language" of the 21st century. Numerous local churches, he laments, are experiencing "spiritual dry rot." They are in desperate need of a revitalized vision that meets the needs of its congregation and ministries. Fortunately, Hendricks convincingly communicates the situation is not hopeless and promotes creativity as the primary conduit for the solution. Thus, the heartbeat of the book pulsates with practical principles that will foster and cultivate creativity within the body of Christ.
The primary supposition of the book (which he states several times) is Hendricks' belief that a significant portion of creativity can be learned. He thus kills the myth that people are born into a creative "caste" which portions each with a finite capacity of creativity that cannot be increased. While it is true that certain individuals are especially gifted with the ability to be creative, Hendricks postulates that all people can develop a useful creative perspective that provokes thinking and initiates new reasoning patterns. This creative thinking, however, must be exercised and disciplined so the user knows "how to distinguish a God-given creative
thought from a castle in the air." Thus, "creativity is not just an instrument; it is an environment" that must be intelligently constructed and evaluated. In fact, Hendricks warns that useful "creativity arises from a sense of security, from freedom within boundaries that define a person and community welfare." Creativity must be channeled into relevance and application.
Despite his non-traditional approach, Hendricks beliefs about the impact and role of creativity are rooted in the fundamental nature of God. He reminds the readers that the emphasis on creativity is not a new trend or educational fad. Creativity is the medium of life itself. Nature and creation reveal God as the highest standard for creativity. In fact, the Sciences, with all of their "discoveries" and inventions, in reality collectively give a standing ovation to the magnificent artistry and innovative design of God's handiwork (unfortunately, most scientists are too self-centered to hear this heavenly-aimed applause!) Naturally, since humanity was created in God's image, Hendricks then extrapolates this creative attribute of God to include man. He quotes Ryken (pg 31), " Human creativity is rooted in divine creativity. Artists create because God created first."
Since the main aim of the Christian walk is to develop a Godly image that will cause itself to be reproduced in others, Hendricks not only promotes the integration of creativity within the sphere of Christian education and discipleship but considers it a biblical mandate that Christians should become creative. The expression of our creativity defines our purpose. As Dr. Hendricks states it: "We have nothing to do with the fact of life but everything to do with its meaning." Thus, all Christians must conclude that the methodology for conforming to the true image of Christ is heavily dependent on their individual expression and use of creativity.
So you think you're not creative?.......2005-01-30
Dr. Hendricks has produced a marvelous book that captures an all too often missing ingredient from the skill sets of today's leaders: creativity. In the author's words, this book is about "the newness of life in Christ, the creative, redemptive side of our salvation." Since The Fall, man has been steadily drifting farther and farther away from God. Along with this distancing is the decline of creativity as stale thinking replaced an awareness of God's creative essence. Armed with this recognition, the author illustrates the fact that every creative act ultimately points toward God as The Creator. Hendricks' desire is to produce churches and leaders that are aware of the gift of creativity so they might become fully alive in Christ, ever-growing, driving change within the church, flexible, and unsatisfied with the status quo.
Color Outside the Lines neatly divides into three parts. In the first part Hendricks defines and examines the many facets of creativity. Part two introduces the creative problem-solving process and offers many techniques to accomplish it. Part three concludes the book with several chapters that focus on the application of creativity. The value of this three-step method is its completeness. Hendricks does not stir up a longing for creativity inside the reader, only to leave him to his own devices. At the conclusion of each of twenty-two chapters is a series of short exercises designed to awaken the reader's God-given creativity. By the time the reader arrives at the last page he has come full-circle along side the author's creativity. Not only did the reader participate in a discussion of creativity, he discovered his own repressed creativity, and was given a charge by Hendricks to allow this now awakened creativity to consume the his life.
A Very Uncreative Book About Creativity.......2003-01-18
I must start by saying I highly respect Howard Hendricks and his incredible impact on Christian thinking over the past couple decades. He's a great man of God who deserves a lot of credit for promoting the Gospel.
I applaud Hendricks' overall philosophy that individuals (particularly Christians) need to embrace the unknown and explore their hidden potential. But of all the books about creativity that I've read, this is one of the dullest. Hendricks stops at nothing to lull the reader into a false sense of mental comfort, rather than truly challenging readers to higher levels of innovation. His "proven methods" and "nine steps" are nothing more than the "tried and true" routines of the past, not revolutionary ideas for expanding the mind's capacity. The book is full of cliches and traditional (ie., old-fashioned) brainstorm activities. Worse, it reduces the creative process to a scientific formula, asserting that creativity is best wrought through some prescribed (and prescripted) convention.
"Color Outside the Lines" may be okay for someone who wouldn't know creativity if it bit them on the nose. But if you want to fuel your brain on the good stuff, try reading "Walking on Water" by Madeleine L'Engle or "Orbiting the Giant Hairball" by Gordon MacKenzie.
This is a home run by one of America's premere leaders........1998-11-26
Long-time leader and professor at Dallas Theological Seminary has written a volume that takes church leadership to new frontiers. . Pelted with quotes by notables (Drucker, Bennis, Nanus, et al), the author, with characteristic lightening flashes, tackles subjects such as personal and organizational creativity, leadership and family principles. Let this generation of Christian leaders rise up and call Hendricks blessed!! Five Stars!!!

Book Description
So begins this controversial and enlightened book by Roger Schank, Ph.D., a world-renowned expert on teaming, who believes that every day of the school year our children are being failed by an academic system that does nothing to stir a lifelong passion for learning. In this lively, sometimes alarming book, Schank shatters the myths about how children learn and offers candid advice for parents who want to raise kids with gumption, ambition, creativity, inquisitiveness, and analytic and verbal proficiency.

Where is the research to back it up?.......2007-02-24
Although I enjoyed reading the book and agreed with most of its premises, I was disappointed by the lack of references on the research backing up his recommendations. I am sure they will mostly make sense to many people, however it would have been a lot more powerful if he could have cited back up research and studies.
Another annoyance (at least for me) was the constant use of examples based on his 2 kids (now adults). At the end I was under the impression that all his recommendations were based solely on his own personal experience raising his family. Not sure how unbiased he can be in this assessment.
I'm glad I borrowed this from the library and did not spend my own money on it.
All parents should read this.......2005-01-12
Schank bravely asserts some concepts that might tick people off, but the book is very well written and insightful. Highly recommended to all parents.
On the right track, but the wrong train.......2004-07-20
I alternately love & hate this book. Schank is into linguistics, computer science & artificial intelligence & in order to study how computers learn, he studied how humans learn. He is currently the founder and director of Northwestern University's Institute for the Learning Sciences.
I don't care for his writing style. Although he knows a lot of the concrete research, he puts it aside in order to tell us what worked with his two children. It comes off as narrow-sighted and arrogant. He extrapolates from "what works for my two children" to "this is what everyone should do". At the same time, I agree with most of what he believes about natural learning.
My biggest complaint with him is that the entire book is set up to explain how damaging schools are to children and how parents can undo that damage with the little time they have at home with their children. He constantly and almost-wholly bashes schools, teachers, curriculum, etc., but explicitly dismisses homeschooling as an extreme option. He has the attitude that "school was damaging to my children, but I did a, b, and c, and they survived intact, so you should, too." One of the tactics he used to get better services for his children (a change in teacher, for example) was to throw around his professional clout. He needs to step out of his isolated academic environment to hear stories from all the parents who *try and try and try* to get services for their children and don't get results because they lack that clout....or inner city or rural parents who don't *have* choices....or parents of children with learning disabilities. I kept thinking how delusional he is to think that parents can change the system--even for their one child. Maybe 30-40 years ago in small suburban districts, but not anymore.
Mostly, I kept thinking how ridiculous it was to fight the system that bashes kids into compliance and submission when it's so much easier to just step out of that system and nurture learning (via his good suggestions) 24 hours a day via homeschooling. All the time he spent repairing damage that school does wouldn't be necessary if they weren't in that system in the first place.
If I put aside how bizarre his basic premise was (that a parent's job is to heal school damage over and over and over again), then his basic ideas about how to nurture learning are pretty good. My one annoyance with this part of his philosophy is that I think he still sees education as something you do *TO* a child vs. something that happens naturally (which he also acknowledges). He gives the example of manipulating their bedtime so they're forced to have some boredom to deal with creatively.
I think Schank's on the right track, but the wrong train. Schools are hopelessly messed up--fogettaboutit and move on. Very interesting, book, though, and I think that for parents just considering the issue of school for their little ones, it would be very helpful--if for no other reason than to encourage them not to put their children into that harmful system in the first place.
The ego ramblings are too much to bear!.......2004-07-11
Once you get past the self-aggrandizing author and his countless efforts to appear as an "expert" in child rearing and learning, he has some interesting points. He picks and chooses learning theory when it suits the justification of his own upbringing and that of the way he parented his own children. I suspect that this is why this book was written in the first place. This is purely an advice book from a professor who is clearly stepping out of his field of expertise. Once you get past the pomposity of Schank, you will find that he makes some very good statements about the responsibility of the parent as the primary educator in a child's life. Public education needs to be looked at critically from the perspective of every parent; the propensity for the lackadaisical if not neglectful teaching of any individual child is very high in a public education setting as well as in many private schools. From this stand point, Schank it right on the money. If you want child-rearing advice when it comes to learning and being successful, you money would be better spent on books with a sound basis in theory and practice such as those written about Waldorf and Montessori schools.
Think you've got an open mind?.......2003-07-27
Think you really know what's best for your kids? Read this book. It certainly isn't the be-all and end-all of wisdom on how we should educate our children, but it's the best work on the subject I've seen yet. To read it, though, you have to put aside everything you ever automatically "knew" about school (for example, that it's a good thing) and really THINK about it. What is the purpose of teaching higher math to a child with no aptitude for it and no chance of using it in her career? Why do teachers always insist that children sit quietly and never speak out of turn? Why do parents assume that school will prepare their child for life in the real world?
Roger Schank doesn't accuse teachers of trying to squelch children's interests or administrators of being bad people, but he does point out that the way the school system teaches is completely outdated and unintentionally destroys children's eagerness and passion for learning. To raise a truly intelligent child, Schank says, parents must take charge personally. They must work to undue the damage school does to a child, and to instill positive character traits in a child that will help him develop true intelligence: verbal ability, analytical ability, gumption, inquisitiveness, creativity, and ambition. There are simple (and not-so-simple) ways parents can do this, and Schank dedicates his book to telling us how we can help our children and also WHY we should take charge. He stresses that it isn't easy being a parent and it's even harder parenting a "smarter kid" -- but the goal is a child who knows who she is and finds herself as an adult in a happy and successful situation, doing something she loves and excells at. Isn't that a worthy ambition?
Altogether, COLORING OUTSIDE THE LINES is an eye-opening look at education in our country and the future of our kids -- well worth the time to read and put into practice.

Book Description
Why are we afraid to be who we really are? Why do we seek to measure up to other's expectations instead of our own? Why do we so freely hand our power over to someone else? In the process of coming to terms with one's own truth and finally feeling comfortable in one's own skin, there awaits an even greater reward. The gift of YOU. Coloring Outside the Lines reveals how to get to this place--how to come to terms with one's true self, and how to know total empowerment. Coloring Outside the Lines takes an honest and heartfelt look at one man's story of growing up in the deep, conservative south. Mark Hyde's childhood was unique in the fact that he was one of a set of triplets from a broken home. He constantly tried to do things by other people's standards and not his own. He lost himself in religious dogma, six years of Baptist education, a feeble effort at marriage, and two suicide attempts. It was a desperate struggle to fit in. It is a story of the extremes to which we often go to not disappoint other people. He knows all too well what it's like to be uncomfortable in one's own skin, to seek after other people's ideas of truth instead of his own. This is Mark's account of walking away from his entire support system that defined his self-worth as a person. He had to do it for his own sake; he had to be true to himself. It was the only way to find comfort in his own skin and as a result, embrace his personal truth. You can be true to yourself. You have a right and a freedom. Take heart that it can be done and done beautifully. This is a story of how to get to that place we all desire, complete assurance of who and what we are.

This story of one man's life journey, is a compelling read--couldn't put the book down and finished in two reads. His comfortable writing style draws you in and is emotionally evocative--found myself moved to tears at several points. Highly recommended!
The Author's Spirit.......2007-02-20
Mark Hyde uses this book as a tool in which to deliver his heart and soul. In reading it, we see the incarnation of a genuine, loving and fearless spirit.
Courage to live your Truth.......2007-02-16
I loved this book, couldn't put it down. It was a moving and inspiring account of one person's struggle against invalidation and judgment. I so admire the author's courage and the strength it took for him to make some hard choices in order to live his truth. This is not about being gay or straight, black or white, male or female, so much as it is about being human and living your own truth. A great read that will inspire!!!!
Coloring Outside the Lines, by Mark Hyde.......2007-02-09

And after you have read, it you will know what it will take to live the rest of your life to the fullest with spirit. Gay or Straight this book is for everyone.
Brilliant self motivational book!.......2007-01-23
It only took me two evenings to finish this book. I didn't want to put it down. What an amazing life story. He has had a fare share of what life can give us. And to have so much intelligence and poise to become such a strong, warm and kind individual is admirable.
I came away with wanting to do everything I can to be a better person, for me.
This book really touched my heart!
Thank you Mark. Can't wait for your next book!!! :)

Book Description
Written by Musicians Institute instructor Jean Marc Belkadi at the request of his students, this book/CD pack will help guitarists understand, hear and be able to use modern outside playing techniques in their own compositions and improvisations. The book covers: four different concepts of playing outside (the chromatic, symmetrical, superimposed and 12-tone approach); the major, minor and dominant chord families; and more, all in standard notation and tab. The accompanying CD contains 82 demo tracks, with most played at full tempo, then repeated at half speed.
Customer Reviews:
GREAT TOOL.......2007-05-17
Obviously this is not for the beginner.
You need to know your chords/scales/modes before embarking on outside playing.
The examples are great tools for the guitarist who wants to add more flavor to his/her phrasing lines.
It doesn't spoon-feed you completely because you should already know the terms used in the book and be able to recognize motifs at least by ear.
Great book but NOT for beginners.......2005-12-10
Like all Jean Marc Belkadi books, or at least the 3 or 4 I own or have seen, this book is NOT for beginners. The author does NOT explain in great detail the examples of what he played. There is a short paragraph--usually just 2 or 3 sentences---stating the key and the general concept of what is happening in the lick. If you do not know some music theory, you will struggle with this book. You must also have some 'chops' before even thinking about getting this book. You must also understand how to learn from these books. The author cannot play the guitar for you. The point with books like these is to grasp the underlying concept of the lick the author shows you and then EXPAND on it and experiment with it in as many different ways you can think of. With those caveats being mentioned, this is a WONDERFUL book. It has given me many freah new ideas on improvising. But again, you must be prepared and willing to put alot of time and effort in applying the examples in the book. If you do, you will gain much from this book.
MI Press Rocks.......2005-08-30
Jean Marc is an awesome guitar player that i had the pleasure to meet and recieve a guitar lesson. He travels the whole world finding unique musical references from every star on the map. If you are into unorthodox guitar playing then this book is defintly fo you.

From a hit website to a printed coloring book, Coloringbookland: Coloring outside the lines of good taste continues the tradition of offending as many people as possible through the healing powers of laughter.
By mixing innocent retro clip art with black (and sometimes shocking) humor, Jim Wirt pushes the boundaries of the social norm and rips it a new one with this 92 page laughfest!
Customer Reviews:
Coloring Book Land.......2007-02-01
Coloring Book Land's gimmick is that it combines clip art and stock
illustrations with offensive one-liners. Like most simple types of
humor, the jokes are lost if explained in detail. So trust me when I
say that the majority of cartoons in this book are entertaining, even
if it doesn't necessarily sound funny to see a picture of a mother and
daughter seemingly exalted over their grandfather dying and going to
hell, or paramedics advocating casual racism.
If these descriptions seem somewhat shocking to you, then be advised
that there are cartoons with much worse content that I haven't
described. Wirt's sense of humor will alienate some people, but is
likely to attract far more.
This book is clearly up there with anything that The Onion or The
Daily Show has put out there in print form. It's not War and Peace,
but it's funny. Throw it on your coffee table, pick it up when you're
bored, and enjoy.
One of the good things about this book is how effectively it
translated the material from Wirt's [...]
Unlike the work of other web writers turned authors, the material of
Coloring Book Land doesn't lose anything in the translation between
mediums (although this may be because there isn't much content to
misplace in the first place). Thus, if you want an accurate preview
of what the book is like, you can just visit the website.
Coloring Book Land does have some problems, the foremost being that
the book is only 96 pages long. Although the cartoons can be funny,
there aren't too many of them, and Coloring Book Land isn't the sort
of book that one rereads. Furthermore, the entire conceit of the
book, that one is actually supposed to color the pages, just seems
like an excuse to print Coloring Book Land on cheaper paper, thus
reducing printing costs.
Nevertheless, if you enjoy tawdry humor, then Coloring Book Land will
probably keep you laughing for at least half an hour or so. If
complicated jokes aren't your thing but simplistic juxtapositions have
you bending over in stitches, then you'd be well advised to pick up a
copy.
sick is not a great enough acolade.......2007-01-21
wish there were more pages for the money, and a few of the alternate captions from web site. equally offensive to all. way to go.
I'm Going To Burn In Hell.......2007-01-19
The most accurate comic in ColoringBookLand is "You're going straight to hell for reading this book." Almost every single page in the book would make a perfect t-shirt that of course, would also damn you for all of eternity.
what a treat!.......2007-01-19
I read CBL all the time, and I was afraid this book wouldn't live up to my expectations. I was wrong. Plenty of original stuff all in the same horrendously political incorrect vein. Highly recommend.
Not for children.......2007-01-11
This book is hilarious. I'm not sure where Jim Wirt finds the inspiration for these cartoons, but it's obviously a dark and twisted place. His jokes touch everything from homosexuality, to drugs, to pedophilia, to pornography to masturbation. Trust me, there is a reason that the Amazon description doesn't go into very much detail. I highly recommend it--just not for children. And a nearly a 100 pages, it's not some cash-in attempt. Honestly, this is one of those books you stick in your bathroom and laugh as your guests try to manage their business and read it at the same time.

Truly inspiring.......2005-01-12
Ms. Mattern is a true hero. Her story has given me a new perspective on living. In the face of death, she saw life. I can only pray that I would possess half the courage she had while fighting cancer if ever I find myself in a similar situation. Her book will leave you with a whirlwind of emotions; I laughed and cried. The book is a beautiful composition of an amazing woman's will to live. Her family and friends were her backbone, never letting her fall. I highly recommend this book; it's a must-read for all.
A Powerful Story About Life, Illness, Strength and A Future.......2004-01-22
This is an inspiring book about a person's recognition, struggle and successful battle with a catastrophic illness. How does she reach down and find the strength to fight this cancer? How does she use all of her resourses and strengths and rely on friends and family for help? It's a must read since we will all have someone in our life...if not ourselves...who will deal with this.
This book is so real, so informative, at times lightened with humor but always a powerful story.

Outstanding Story.......2004-01-08
This book is a testimony of a woman standing in the face of insurmountable odds and creating a recovery plan that goes beyond the traditional western model. It is a spiritual journey. The author used all of her stored up business skills to make her treatment and recovery a team effort. Loved it!!!

The writing is first class. This story is a riveting chronology of a compelling life. It is a must read for everyone facing great challenges in their life, for all those who love someone facing great challenges and for everyone else because we are all vulnerable. The open disclosure and emotional honesty is heartwarming. This book provides paths to success for others - it changed my view and approach to cancer and enriched my view of love. I would rate this book more than five stars if given the choice.
