5 out of 5 stars Another tool in the shed.......2007-08-01

This is a very good book from the Data Warehouse toolkit series by Ralph Kimball et al. This one is all about ETL - extract, transform and load, although the authors may put it a little bit different sometime:
We expand the traditional ETL steps of extract, transform, and load into the more actionable steps of extract, clean, conform, and deliver, although we resist the temptation to change ETL into ECCD!
Anyhow, ETL or ECCD, it's the same thing - fetching the data from your live operational systems and putting it in your data warehouse.

The book thoroughly covers the entire ETL process. Believe me, I tried to squeeze a digest here. A few times. It goes out of hand. A lot, a huge lot of all sorts of information. Useful, extensive, clear and interesting to read.

Having read the first (?) book in the series - The Complete Guide to Dimensional Modeling -
helps greatly in understanding, because this book uses the same (standard) terminology - dimensions, facts, and so on.

Probably the only thing to whine about is the pictures. They could have definitely been better. Some of them are cryptic and some of them have no real value. Let's put it this way - some of the pictures do not help.

Anyhow, great book.

5 out of 5 stars A field manual for the professional .......2007-05-13

I've been doing this for 9 years, and this is the best book I've seen on ETL procesing and its role in data warehousing. Before you start your data warehouse effort have your team read this book. Not just the ETL members...both the front/back room technicians will benefit from understanding the clear presentation of what can be in scope (dare I say, "best practice" yikes!) for ETL processing. The ideas for capturing highly valuable data quality and cleansing processes is no less helpful than the emphasis on loading the data unless it is misleading enmasse or so obviously flawed. The bias toward driving the data to the front room for presentation forces data quality issues to the surface where they must be dealt with and the loop to operational systems (or perhaps even flawed ETL transforms!) closed. Illustrates alternatives for dealing with the messy reality of suspended data, late arriving facts and dimensions. Use it as a guide for your ETL efforts. Buy this book, read it and then buy a few more for your team if you agree.

5 out of 5 stars A handy tool on the desk of any ETL Developer........2006-06-27

I am currently working as an ETL Developer at a company
Fourier Approach, Centurion, South Africa.

Most of the time this is a fairly hot seat -
because so many business requirements are dependant on the
Quality of Information produced by the ETL process.

I always asked myself,

* Am I doing the right thing?
* Is this the best solution?
* How would other developers do this?

A while ago I attended the course

"ETL Architecture and Design Workshop"

presented by Joe Caserta, and hosted by Alicornio Africa in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Before the presentation we received a copy of the book
"The Data Warehouse ETL Toolkit".

This changed my whole perspective.
The book adressed all my ETL questions,
with examples from real-world situations.
It covers the whole ETL process and gives answers
to almost every question you will ever think of asking.

I must say this is a very handy tool on the desk of any serious ETL Developer.

Regards,

André Ackermann
ETL Developer

5 out of 5 stars Great coverage of the ETL building blocks.......2005-12-19

This is one of the few references out there providing the building blocks of good ETL design. There is plenty of technical documentation and forums out there that are specific to one ETL tool or DBMS but this is a better starting place for ETL developers. It is required reading as ETL projects often take short cuts in design, data quality and metadata management and reporting. This leads to very expensive Data Warehouse administration costs and often a complete rebuild of load jobs.

The book is relevent for people using most ETL or ELT tools and it will remain relevent for years even as the ETL products continue to advance and mature. It is targeted at DW but the basic flow of Extract, Clean, Conform and Deliver is suitable for most types of data loads.

Good coverage of the alternatives to traditional overnight bulk loads in the section on real-time ETL systems (also describes Microbatch) as the businesses and the major ETL vendors shift to SOA.

5 out of 5 stars A survival Guide and a Must.......2005-05-03

A survival guide and a must have for every data warehouse architect. This book is written for architects - not for ETL developers. Written from the 10,000 foot level, many of the architectures and designs are `nice to haves' and would require tremendous commitments in resources to be implemented and thus may be too lofty for many organizations. HOWEVER, it is best to have a theoretical bulls-eye, a target to shoot for, and try to make small baby steps towards implementing the optimal solution, then not have a hypothetical utopia at all to strive for.

Looking for a comparison of ETL tools and which ones do what best? You will not find this here.

A great resource for DW Architects who may have many years of experience working on data warehouse projects but may have not had the opportunity of implementing some more elaborative meta data driven cleaning and conforming schemas - a truly interesting approach yet I'm not sure Ralph Kimball's design with the `survivorship support metadata' schema, could perform fast enough for some of the large data warehouse loading needs of larger organizations.

Separating critical issues from insignificant ones is difficult from the reading, however, the framework and methodical approach to the steps of Extract => Clean => Conform => Deliver and the role and responsibilities of the actors, i.e, DW Architect, dimensional manager, fact table provider, ect., give the reader/architect some clear division of duties more then likely not clearly defined within the corporation.

Plenty of ERDs, actual SQL statements, templates and diagrams to use in your existing projects.

The sub title says it all. What a power packed hardback. I wish I had been given this at birth and had given it to my children at their birth. Instead I bought it for myself and have given it to my kids now and am teaching the principles disclosed in it to my adorable grandson. Buy and read anything by Joe Vitale, especially this book.

I recommend this book as an introduction to the rest of Joe Vitale's work. It is an anthology including personal experiences, and nuggets of philosophy. If you like this book, like me, you will tend to highlight passages and read them again. It is an easy, hard to put down kind of book. If you liked this book, I would recommend you to read on The Attractor Factor. Enjoy!

Book Description

Professional Ajax 2nd Edition provides a developer-level tutorial of Ajax techniques, patterns, and use cases. The book begins by exploring the roots of Ajax, covering how the evolution of the web and new technologies directly led to the development of Ajax techniques. A detailed discussion of how frames, JavaScript, cookies, XML, and XMLHttp requests (XHR) related to Ajax is included. After this introduction, the book moves on to cover the implementation of specific Ajax techniques. Request brokers such as hidden frames, dynamic iframes, and XHR are compared and contrasted, explaining when one method should be used over another. To make this discussion clearer, a brief overview of HTTP requests and responses is included.

Once a basic understanding of the various request types is discussed, the book moves on to provide in-depth examples of how and when to use Ajax in a web site or web application. Different data transmission formats, including plain text, HTML, XML, and JSON are discussed for their advantages and disadvantages. Also included is a discussion on web services and how they may be used to perform Ajax techniques. Next, more complex topics are covered. A chapter introducing a request management framework explores how to manage all of the requests inside of an Ajax application. Ajax debugging techniques are also discussed.

The last part of the book walks through the creation of two full-fledged Ajax web applications. The first, FooReader.NET, is an Ajax-powered RSS reader. The second, called AjaxMail, is an Ajax-enabled email system. Both of these applications incorporate many of the techniques discussed throughout the book.

Professional Ajax 2nd edition is written for Web application developers looking to enhance the usability of their web sites and web applications and intermediate JavaScript developers looking to further understand the language. Readers should have familiarity with XML, XSLT, Web Services, PHP or C#, HTML, CSS. This book is not aimed at beginners without a basic understanding of the aforementioned technologies. Also, a good understanding of JavaScript is vitally important to understanding this book. Those readers without such knowledge should instead refer to books such as Beginning JavaScript, Second Edition (Wrox, 2004, ISBN: 978-0-7645-5587-9) and Professional JavaScript for Web Developers (Wrox, 2005, ISBN: 978-0-7645-7908-0).

Professional Ajax 2nd edition adds nearly 200 pages of new and expanded coverage compared to the first edition. Some of the new topics covered here include:

And of course the Second Edition retains and updates the core first edition content including:

This book is also available as part of the 4-book JavaScript and Ajax Wrox Box (ISBN: 0470227818). This 4-book set includes:

2 out of 5 stars Not Happy.......2007-10-03

Wed 10/03/2007 5:15 pm. I'm not sure who writes these positive reviews, but an early example in the book ("The Hidden Frame Technique", starting on page 21) is obviously broken. The book shows "HiddenFrameExample1.htm" in an illustration but there is no such file in the ProAjax2ePHP.zip file downloaded from wrox. Judging by quotes on the internet probably from the first edition, I'd guess the actual file is probably GetCustomerData.php (?) but whether it is or not, that file has an obvious syntax error, missing paren in line 12 "if (is_numeric($sID) {". Of course if I were a php/ajax expert all this would be blindingly obvious; but I'm not, that's why I bought the book. I can't say I'm optimistic about the remainder of the text.

5 out of 5 stars Very well written. Excellent resource........2007-07-27

I'm a senior ASP.NET/Web developer with no Ajax experience. This is my first Ajax book. I wanted to learn Ajax from the ground up, not just the Microsoft controls. Our ecommerce site is very highly trafficed and there's no forgiveness for inefficiencies. This book certainly fulfilled my expectations, but it also introduced me to some new worlds of concepts that I did not expect. For instance, the chapter on Ajax Patterns: It's a new way of thinking about Web Development. I'm very impressed with its content. The book is clearly written, the examples are excellent. I am learning a great deal from this book. Nice job guys!

4 out of 5 stars powerful handbook.......2007-06-27

I really like this powerful handbook whick gives me detail tutorials in the field of AJAX practice.

5 out of 5 stars excellent in several respects.......2007-03-23

Last year (2006), I plowed through practically every available book on Ajax. This one really stands out for its excellent historical overview of how Ajax grew to exist. It also is one of the few that covers the use of hidden frames and Iframes as an Ajax technique (it has been around longer but is still used widely). The writing is outstanding. If you can only buy one Ajax book, this one should be it.

A free copy of chapter 1, "What is Ajax?" is available online at [...]

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly easy to read for a programming book.......2007-02-20

The information you need to get started on ajax programming happens very quickly in this book. The way it is presented also helps a great deal. While it still has it's dry parts, this book was actually surprisingly easy to read(meaning I wasn't falling asleep after 5 minutes of reading)

Stealing the Network is a book of science fiction. It's a series of short stories about characters who gain unauthorized access to equipment and information, or deny use of those resources to the people who are meant to have access to them. The characters, though sometimes well described, are not the stars of these stories. That honor belongs to the tools that the black-hat hackers use in their attacks, and also to the defensive measures arrayed against them by the hapless sysadmins who, in this volume, always lose. Consider this book, with its plentiful detail, the answer to every pretty but functionally half-baked user interface ever shown in a feature film.

One can read this book for entertainment, though its writing falls well short of cyberpunk classics like Burning Chrome and Snow Crash. Its value is in its explicit references to current technologies--Cisco routers, OpenSSH, Windows 2000--and specific techniques for hacking them (the heroes and heroines of this book are always generous with command-history dumps). The specific detail may open your eyes to weaknesses in your own systems (or give you some ideas for, ahem, looking around on the network). Alternately, you can just enjoy the extra realism that the detail adds to these stories of packetized adventure. --David Wall

5 out of 5 stars Fiction that hits too close to home.......2007-01-09

While they present this as a work of fiction, there is a large amount of information that can be immediately applied to your own situations. The authors mention that the stories come from real-life experiences or observations, and it is very easy to believe them. This is a great read for any network engineer or network administrator though don't read it at night, case some of the stories can be a little frightening, and you don't necessarily want the nightmares in your sleep.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining in it's own right..........2006-08-16

The Stealing the Network series of books is in a catagory on it's own. Thrilling, entertaining, and fun to read just scratches the surface of these books. I'll recommend this book to anybody, from joe sixpack who only uses the internet for games and pr0n to mitnick himself.

The highly detailed accounts immerse the reader in a truly fantastic series of stories of hackers and their techniques. Remember, the game is a mental one...

4 out of 5 stars Useful, readable illustration of computer security concepts.......2005-10-31

_Stealing the Network: How to Own the Box_ has 10 stories with a first person narrator, who is either an attacker, or in two cases, a defender. While the characterization isn't up to the standards of (good) commercial fiction* in most cases, it makes the technical medicine go down easier and gives a picture of who and why people do this stuff. That picture is useful in making an abstraction feel more like a concrete threat.

I think this would be a good intro for a non-technical manager of security staff who needs to know why we have to worry about these things. It's a faster read than Bruce Schneir's admirable _Secrets and Lies_, which is a straight discussion of how to think about security, and probably more rigorous and complete. This offers specific examples and leads to many similar lessons. I will read the next one, How to Own a Continent, when its turn comes up in the queue.

One quibble: for a book published in 2003, with a chapter that mentions Snort a couple of times, I was disappointed in the Laws of Security Appendix. Specifically, the Law that "Any IDS can be Evaded" contains some material that is way out of date. To state that "free ones are starting to come available" at least a decade after Shadow, and at least a couple of years after Snort surpassed proprietary intrusion detection solutions, is a bit, well, weird. Snort is big time - Checkpoint just bought the company that writes it. The two chapters telling a defender's tale refer to Snort.

Also, I'm not convinced of the law's validity. The escalation between intrusion evaders and detectors is an interesting one but I think IDS has the advantage in this go-round. We can detect it, if we're watching the right things. Many of the evasion techniques are themselves alertable!

Apart from that, I found myself nodding in agreement with most of what was said. This taught me some things, and I've read pretty widely. This title is available cheap if you look at used. Check it out.

*It's at least better than Tom Clancy, whose plots are the only thing separating him from pure cheese, the male equivalent of a romance novel.

3 out of 5 stars Rough writing, but interesting.......2005-10-11

The writing needs some help -- I understand the newer books are edited by an actual writer to smooth out the prose a bit.
Overall I liked it, there were useful concepts in each hacker's exploit.
The story relating to "H3X", the female hacker was one of the better ones, but had a glaring problem: seeing as I'm not a lonely 14-year-old boy and have had romantic experiences of my own, I really didn't give a crap about the gratutitous, albeit vague, descriptions of her romantic nights out -- it would've been better to just stay on topic.

4 out of 5 stars Making Technology and Security a Fun Read.......2005-05-16

You may be asking yourself why I am writing a review of "Stealing The Network - How to Own the Box" (Ryan Russell, Tim Mullen, et al, Syngress Press, 2003, 429 Pages) two years after it came out in 2003. The reason is that next month, the third book in this series, "Stealing The Network - How to Own an Identity", is being released by Syngress. So in anticipation of this new title, I wanted to read this book, as well as "Stealing The Network - How To Own a Continent" (review to be written later this week). I did not expect to be drawn in as quickly as I was by this book, but I found myself being drawn in by the totally unique style in which technical content is presented and the fast pace the narrative took.

Each chapter presents a mini-scenario that demonstrates how specific network vulnerabilities can be exploited, causing potential problems and losses from organizations. What sets this apart from many of these books that I have read is that is kind of set up in the style employed by the television serial "Law and Order: Criminal Intent": a focus on narrative and knowledge from the point of view of the bad guys. While this is a work of "techno-fiction", the level of detail suggests that only the names were changed to prevent the innocent (or the guilty system administrators who fail to lock systems down as well as they should or could).

Another interesting point throughout this book is the emphasis on "social engineering", an oft overlooked weakness that has only started gaining true visibility in the evaluation and education of system administrators, managers, and end-users through highly visible incidents. It is kind of refreshing to read a detailed tale of what led a hacker to jump in a dumpster to find out information, and what led him to that point.

It is the unique approach the authors take that may make the book a more palatable read for true "uber-geeks", rather than these people not wanting to read a dry book presenting technical material in the typical dry approach, which for sure puts me asleep any day of the week. It may also make the topic more readable for non-technical managers to get a better understanding of their risks and vulnerabilities without getting buried in technical detail. However, this also is one big weakness of the book: there is no index of keywords or topics to go back to for easy reference, which would make the book a more used reference than just a good "summer beach book".

Who Should Read This Book

This book should be read by students starting out their formal education in computer information systems. It can teach them lessons without beating them over the head. The book should be read by system administrators so they can see that technical information can be presented in simpler ways, encouraging them to work on their "soft skills". Finally, it should be read by non-technical management so they can understand that the risks and vulnerabilities are very real, and need to be addressed.

Scorecard: Par on long Par 4

Note: When you read my review for "Stealing The Network - How To Own a Continent", you will hopefully understand why I only gave this book 4 stars.

Windows 2000 Active Directory is a notably authoritative and engaging guide to the Microsoft Active Directory (AD) for any administrator or developer making the move to the new Windows and this powerful directory standard.

Articulate and technically astute, the author comes across as a trusted advisor, providing an expert's view of designing the layout of your company's Active Directory schema. In realistic terms, he shows you how AD can coexist with Unix directories. The book not only provides a collection of screen shots (though there are hands-on tutorials for specific tasks) but also a nicely in-depth tour of what Internet directories are and what advantages Active Directory offers. Case studies on sample domains and organization units (OUs) for sample companies, including a model global corporation, will help you cope with the design of even the most complex directories. Hints for limiting "domains" and favoring the more flexible "organizational units" (OUs) will also help you think in Windows 2000 terms.

Later sections of the book delve into Active Directory Services Interface (ASDI) scripting using Windows Script Host (WSH), Visual Basic, and even ASPs for browser-based administration. The tips and sample scripts for a variety of common administrative tasks, such as adding new users, changing passwords, and the like, assume very little programming background. This focus on the practical side of administration rounds out an extremely useful and technically savvy guide to Windows 2000 that can definitely simplify the life of any administrator, manager, or developer upgrading to the latest Windows. --Richard Dragan

Book Description

Working with Microsoft's network directory service for the first time can be a headache for system and network administrators, IT professionals, technical project managers, and programmers alike. This authoritative guide is meant to relieve that pain. Instead of going through the graphical user interface screen by screen, O'Reilly's bestselling Active Directory tells you how to design, manage, and maintain a small, medium, or enterprise Active Directory infrastructure.

Fully updated to cover Active Directory for Windows Server 2003 SP1 and R2, this third edition is full of important updates and corrections. It's perfect for all Active Directory administrators, whether you manage a single server or a global multinational with thousands of servers.

Active Directory, 3rd Edition is divided into three parts. Part I introduces much of how Active Directory works, giving you a thorough grounding in its concepts. Some of the topics include Active Directory replication, the schema, application partitions, group policies, and interaction with DNS. Part II details the issues around properly designing the directory infrastructure. Topics include designing the namespace, creating a site topology, designing group policies for locking down client settings, auditing, permissions, backup and recovery, and a look at Microsoft's future direction with Directory Services. Part III covers how to create and manipulate users, groups, printers, and other objects that you may need in your everyday management of Active Directory.

If you want a book that lays bare the design and management of an enterprise or departmental Active Directory, then look no further. Active Directory, 3rd Edition will quickly earn its place among the books you don't want to be without.

5 out of 5 stars What can I say? This book is necessary for any AD admin........2007-09-16

Not much to say, other than I finished this gem with a wealth of knowledge. You can really just jump around to interesting chapters, or read it cover to cover. This book covers everything from policies, to ADSI, to scripting.

5 out of 5 stars use this instead of the Gerald Carter book.......2007-05-25

Hi, I got this book because I could not make heads nor tails of LDAP System Administration by Gerald arter. I read this book, and studied this book, and learned from this book. The authors of this book make their living from the Active Directory. Thus you can be sure that they are not going to make fools of themselfs by publishing
a whole lot of garbage. I used this book to learn about LDAP and then I successfully implemented LDAP at work.

Highly recommended!

2 out of 5 stars Miserable dictionary of doublespeak.......2006-09-14

Not recommended for native speakers of the English language.
When trees == forests and top-level directories are instead 'naming contexts' .... The desirable format would be "This feature, which MS call 'X', is 'Y' plain english", but instead the Y feature will only ever be called X.
This is not a helpful book.

5 out of 5 stars The overall pros and cons of Active Directory, common tips and traps, and more.......2006-08-05

Joe Richards, Robbie Allen and Alistair G. Lowe-Norris' Active Directory, 3rd Edition is also for Windows administrators who may know all to well about the problems it's brought to prior versions of windows. This edition considers the Directory for Windows 2000, 2003 and its updates, considering the overall pros and cons of Active Directory, common tips and traps, and more. Yes, you can use Microsoft's documentation for many similar answers; but here they are arranged in a more logical manner and provide more candid assessments to help users upgrade or understand options.

5 out of 5 stars Great book but there is a new edition.......2006-07-21

This is the leading reference for Active Directory but it has been updated to a third edition, so you should get that one.

5 out of 5 stars Informative.......2007-04-23

Used this book in an intro to film class. I will keep it on the shelf as a reference book. For class it has smooth reading that is cohesive, didn't seem like it has filler information in it. It was fun to read. The context was very helpful in class for lectures, and movie analyzation. Goes over key aspects of film as well as very detailed examples of what to look for, how to see it.

5 out of 5 stars The Art of Watching Film.......2007-01-14

This book was a required text for a film class I took. It is very well done and the price was less than if I had purchased it at the college bookstore.

3 out of 5 stars Intro to Film Studies HUM150.......2006-02-26

This may come as no surprise but I only bought this book for a college class. It turns out that it was a great class. The book isn't nearly as dry as I expected but still, it is a text book. I took the class at the University of Phoenix just to fill some elective credits. Turns out the class was great and the instructor was too. The book was good for a text book and the service from Amazon was well above anything you'll get from a uiversity shop or even most online retailers. If you have to get the book I suggest getting it at Amazon. :)

Outstanding book. Even better than I thought it would be once I looked through it. It covers everything related to movies. There are even exercises, like homework, where you watch various movies to learn different things about the movies. If you take movies and movie reviews seriously, you need this book!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best if used with a printed copy.......2007-08-23

If you have never read Think and Grow Rich before, I would suggest reading the print version first (or at least have a copy handy). Since you will more than likely want to re-read or refer back to certain passages (i.e., the exercises that you are asked to perform).

I've read it several times over the years and thought that the audio book would be a good way to turn my 40 minute commute to work into more productive time.

Unlike the abridged version, there are no anecdotes from Napoleon Hill interspersed throughout this audiobook. However, there is a great introduction by W. Clement Stone.

I would recommend getting this version along with the abridged version simply because I think it's fascinating to hear Napoleon Hill and W. Clement Stone speak about this philosophy in their own words.

    4 out of 5 stars A timeless classic.......2007-07-03

Think and grow rich is a must read for anyone with a dream. Hill describes in inspiring detail how a determined and thoughtful human can achieve virtually anything with the right attitude, plans and of course...thoughts. Dollar-for-dollar the best buy on the Internet.

5 out of 5 stars Read the bible then read this!.......2007-06-08

What more can I say! If you need an attitude adjustment... here it is! Think about it! If you think you can... why cant you? This book deals with that from a near clinical point of view as well as a lamen joe point of view! Everyone on earth needs this book!

1 out of 5 stars Content is great, cheap , crappy paperback copy.......2007-06-07

My comment is for the production of this paperback, not the content.
This is the poorest quality paperback I've ever seen or purchased. Large chunks of pages came loose from the glue binding almost immediately after opening the book the first time. I was on a trip and constantly had to deal with more pages coming loose and trying to fly around. Really poor quality repro.

5 out of 5 stars Get This Version as it was Originally Intended to Be Published.......2007-06-04

This is one of my all-time favorite books which I re-read it at least once every other year. Ask anyone who has read this book and virtually everyone will tell you this is one of the best you will ever own. If you feel you need help succeeding in anything, then use this book as a coach. If you have the ambition, but need a plan - this book will help you. If you just need a pick me up, just read some of the stories intertwined - this book will help you.

This book is an all time great dealing with success and personal management. Dealing with practical methods for creating in oneself the ability to do whatever one puts their mind to. Starting with an idea (hence the name) one can expect to use this information to create a way to approach life that should produce positive results.

    ---**** THE BOTTOM LINE ****---
$ Get THIS version of the book (white background cover with green and yellow title)
$ This version is the way it was originally published. It is older, yes, but newer versions seem to lose some of the original "flavor" and "intent".
$ If you haven't noticed, there's no question about whether or not you SHOULD get this book; the only decision is which version.

I read a lot of technical books and also a lot of spy books. This mashed both of my favorite types of books. The authors who are hackers themselves did a great job of creating a story. I would recommend, and have recommended this book to a lot of people.

    4 out of 5 stars Fun, Entertaining..........2005-10-26

but the writing certainly isn't the best. They're a bunch of computer geeks writing about what they know best, and they make it entertaining as heck. I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys computers.

4 out of 5 stars How do you make a how-to-hack book into a compelling read?.......2005-09-21

Well, you can make a novel out of it.

Which is precisely what the folks at Syngress Publishing have done. The MO here is to gather a group of experts in the 'hacking' field. Then, have them each write a chapter that focuses in on their sub-area of expertise. Finally tie all the chapters together with an overriding thread, in this case an uber-geek villian looking to make a final score.

And it works quite well. If you are going to pull this off, then there is a balance between the techno-speak portions and the traditional elements of a novel (plot, characterization, etc). Granted, given this books target audience, it can pile on plenty of the technology and be just fine. But you can't igonre the story.

Most of the contributing authors are able to hold up the 'story' side as well as the 'tech' side. Some do not, and this is why I gave it 4 stars. In particular, one chapter so muddles the character motivations, plot lines, and timeline that the novel is not quite able to recover with a wholy satisfying ending.

I never expected Dickens, though. I did hope to broaden my knowledge of hacking - the hows and whys while being entertained. And 'How to own a continent' delivers the goods in a unique and fresh way. Kudos, and thanks.

    5 out of 5 stars Nice!.......2005-09-08

Nice book, seemed with hacker's novel!!
Pretty good read for fun. :)

    4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2005-07-19

How to Own a Continent is the first Stealing the Network book I have read and although it kept me on the edge of my seat I was displeased with the ending. The book uses real tools and real methods on how these "hacks" occur but the end just leaves you hanging with no closure. While reading the book you think there is no better book for hacking theory and what it takes to pull hard hacks. But this book does leave you with a little bit of a bad taste in your mouth. Forthe most part the book was great but the ending was lacking.

    The Workout Log

This book is designed to help you keep track of your workouts so that you can make every workout count towards your goal! By keeping track of your progress, you can tell right away what works and what doesn't.

The front cover is laminated with a unique Yin and Yang workout design of two people working out within a gear-shift wheel. The author, who is also a professional computer designer, designed the cover. The inside cover has a conversion chart from kilograms to pounds. The first page explains in a user-friendly manner of how to use the book.

The 2nd and 3rd pages are designed to annotate your present body measurements, height, weight and your max on squats and benchpress. The actual "log" portion of the book is designed in an easy-to-use format. The user can track how many reps and sets he did with a particular weight. It even has a section that asks, "How the workout went" and the user can circle

BAD OK GOOD VERY GOOD EXCELLENT (or even) #@!

For those really bad days in the gym.

This book has been in circulation since 1994. It has sold extremely well in the gyms across Canada, but it's time now to get the book on the net and to a larger market.

    5 out of 5 stars Perfect for............2007-09-10

This journal is perfect for a bodybuilder. Plenty of room for high volume training; bodypart measurment log; goal setting. This is not a general fitness journal. There are no pages specifc to diet or cardio and there is minimal room for notes. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for my needs!.......2007-08-23

I must keep track of my workouts in order to track my progress. I have always just used a little notebook to write them out, but this book is great. It is designed very practically for the serious minded exerciser. It is not meant for cardio only, it is definitely for weightlifting.

4 out of 5 stars Simple, Durable, Compact.......2007-08-23

This is a great tool for anyone that wants to monitor their weight lifting progress. This would not be a good tool for someone doing cardio or other aerobic type of exercise. The pages are easy to track your progress, there's space to write your specific workout activity, and you can quickly mark the day, date, and time of workouts. Each page has a section for daily weight, workout level (was it a fair, good, great, or poor workout), number of reps, and sets.

What I really like about this book is the pages are thick and sturdy. You can throw it on the gym floor, keep it in your gym bag, and it will withstand the punishment. It's been a simple and effective tool for me and as soon as I fill this one up, I plan on buying another one!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome workout partner.......2007-06-26

I ordered this book from Amazon after reading a few reviews both on here and other sites online.

The book has everything you need for strength training sessions. There is only a small space at the top of each page to record any cardio training you do, so this might be a deterrent for some people. However, I find it more than adequate as you can just put down, say, that you did a spin class, hour on the treadmill.....etc.

If I lost this book I'd immediately buy another one.

5 out of 5 stars If You Are Serious About Your Work-Outs, Buy This Log.......2007-03-11

This work-out log is very well organized without being "busy". It has room for 6 sets of 15 exercises per day so whether you lift for mass or circuit train this log book has every thing you need. Highly recommended.
