5 out of 5 stars Excellent primer on how to make money on spin-off situations.......1999-10-08

A good guide on investing in an inherantly inefficient area of the equity market. Recently, McKinsey published a study on corporate spinoffs, suggesting that spin-offs returned an average of 27% in the first two years of independance versus 17% for the S&P 500 Index over a recent 10 year period.

This book will help you take advantage of the dislocation often observed in spin-offs. A good investment for the serious investor.

4 out of 5 stars If you want to make some serious money read 'Spinoff'.......1998-11-23

If you are looking for a great novel I suggest you read Gone With The Wind. If you are looking for a treatise on Martin Luther King Jr. I suggest you read Bearing The Cross. If you are looking for an additional prespective on how to make some serious money I would suggest you read Spinoff.

Mr. Cornell probably will not win the nobel prize for Spinoff, but if you want an alternative to making some very serious money put you current investment thinking on hold and read Spinoff.

2 out of 5 stars This book falls _way_ short of its promises........1998-01-17

Although the initial discussion of spinoffs was ok, the 90 or so "case histories" are useless. Each one is about a paragraph in length, and merely describes the terms of the spinoff, with _no_ commentary whatsoever. The book will give you an idea of which types of spinoffs are worth further investigation, but it does not teach you how to analyze these situations further. However, there is a shameless advertisement for the author's spinoff newsletter at the end of the book. Tsk, tsk...

If you're interested in this type of investing, I would highly recommend Joel Greenblatt's "You Can Be a Stock Market Genius", which manages to go into further depth in about 10% of the space - and at half the price!

Book Description

Working with found objects, pages from old books, and dime-store trinkets, self-taught artist Joseph Cornell (1903–1972) transformed everyday materials into extraordinary universes. By collecting and carefully juxtaposing his treasures in small, glass-front boxes, this pioneering artist invented visual poems exploring themes as varied as the night sky, the romantic ballet, glamorous movie stars, and bird habitats. A lavishly illustrated and collaged book presents Cornell’s life and art, his sources of inspiration, and artistic process, along with six project ideas. Housed in a sturdy keepsake box with a see-through front window and removable grid, the package also includes materials to jump-start the creative process—printed sheets for collage, a metal ring, antique tags, and a magnifier.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a lot of opportunities.......2007-06-10

I think the book/kit is beautifully put together. It's a wonderful way for children and adults to learn about Cornell's life and work, gaining a sense of clarity about an artist whose personal mythology could so easily be considered inaccessible.

1 out of 5 stars Frightened and appalled..........2007-04-04

One of my design students brought the box part of this set into class as a base for a prototype this evening... the concept of it is frightening. Reducing Cornell's -- or any other artist's -- vision into an ersatz how-to kit not only undermines the brilliance and significance of their work, but completely defeats the process of artistic self-discovery and exploration. A better route would be to read-up on Cornell and other self-taught artists in more robust texts (Howard Finster, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Jacques Henri Lartigue... all of whom have books on Amazon) and use this insight to forge one's own artistic path in life... one that derives inspiration from the artist themselves rather than from a $25 kit.

4 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to the Artist.......2007-02-21

I wouldn't recommend this book necessarily to serious artists, but for a person beginning their first tentative steps toward collage and assemblage, this kit would be a good introduction. It includes a full-color book with lots of images and descriptions of Cornell's works and life. The kit itself provides materials for taking a first step toward creating found art. This would be particularly good for a young person as a way to introduce them to Cornell.

Joseph Cornell is the author of Sharing Nature With Children and Sharing Nature With Children II . This two volume set showcase nature studies and appreciation activities that any parent, teacher, or child care provider can readily engage in with children. Ann appreciation for the complex and interrelated life forms that comprise the exosphere of their environments is a solid basis to establish a life-long enthusiasm for nature and the out-of-doors, as well as a lasting commitment to environmental issues and concerns. Each volume is available independently, but school and community libraries are urged to acquire them both for the nature activities and environmental reference collections.

5 out of 5 stars Cornell's book for children.......2001-10-03

I had no idea that Joseph Cornell had written a book for children. This is a rare find. (It ranks up there with Robert Walser's little-known treatise on horse-grooming, or Arthur Brand's book of stock quotes.) There are stories here of hope and joy. You really get a sense of Cornell's engagement with a visionary romanticism when he encourages the reader to "let the child see into the world of nature, for there they will find a balm for their sorrows, a calm for their heart, and a palm against time." Cornell filled his boxes with the doodads of youth, and it's wonderful to find him speaking to children without any form of mediation. A must.

5 out of 5 stars Good to Have Around.......2000-05-31

This is a good book to have around when looking for ideas on how to increase our enjoyment and appreciation of nature. While the title says the book is for Sharing Nature with _Children_, the ideas are fun for adults too.

I like how the author provides a four-part framework for the activities described in the book, classifying them as awakening enthusiasm, focusing attention, directing experience, or sharing inspiration.

I also like the stories the author tells about his experiences in environmental education. I could feel his enthusiasm coming through in the stories. Plus, the quotations that open various sections of the book added to my enjoyment.

I found the directions for each activity to be adequate, with a nice range of activities to suit different people and interests. The original Sharing Nature with Children provides more of the same, and the revised edition of the original book incorporates the four-part framework.

I hope you enjoy the book and will use it to not only spend more time enjoying nature but also will be inspired by it to spend more time protecting nature so that future generations can share in this enjoyment.

Book Description

Out of the fantasies that enriched an often reclusive life, the enigmatic American artist Joseph Cornell (1903-1972) created a world of enchantment with his famed shadow boxes and collages. Using common objects like glasses, marbles, and mirrors, Cornell's work evokes the strangeness of the familiar and the odd familiarity of the strange.

Respected art historian and friend of the artist Diane Waldman probes the elusive imagery that marks Cornell's work. Interviews with Cornell and his family and access to the artist's papers inform her text. This richly illustrated book, now available in paperback, is one of the few to cover his entire career.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Restoration of a Worthy Magnum Opus.......2006-03-01

Fortunate is the arts library to have the restored and embellished 1977 monograph on the life and work of American artist Joseph Cornell, an artist whose importance not only to the craft of assemblage but to the history of American art continues to grow as the years pass. Author Diane Waldman initially based her monograph on extensive interviews with Cornell and his confreres in preparing the 1967 retrospective of Cornell's art for the Guggenheim Museum. And fine though that now extinct monograph was, it was important to update it with the added information gleaned from the 1978 gift of the bulk of Cornell's archives donated by the heirs of Cornell to the Smithsonian Museum, forming the Joseph Cornell Study Center in Washington, DC.

But enough of background. Waldman the writer and historian presents here one of the more sensitive tributes to Joseph Cornell in print. Included in this rather brief book are over forty color plates of many of Cornell's greatest works. The color reproductions and photography of these basically three-dimensional works is outstanding and allows the viewer to pause with each work, enhance the visual appreciation with the accompanying writing by the author, and then return once again to the biographical data of a man at odds with conformity and with somewhat fractured social graces.

Joseph Cornell was a unique artist and one whose impact on all forms of art (especially the eventual 'installation art' phase) is yearly more appreciated. This fine book is as sound a source of information on his life and works as any of the now many volumes on the shelves. Highly Recommended to both the novice and the expert. Grady Harp, February 06

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Primer On Cornell and His Work.......2002-11-15

Finally, a beautiful, comprehensive book about Joseph Cornell and his work. Diane Waldman knew Cornell intimately ever since she was an art student (and through doing gallery shows for him), and this affinity shows; this is ultimately a book of love and tribute to a friend.

The biographical material is excellent. Most fascinating segments deal with Cornell's stranger sides, such as when at his brother Robert's funeral, Joseph put a sheet over his head and laughed, creeping everyone out, and explained it was only a side joke that Robert would have understood. Cornell was terribly timid in front of women (particularly the ones he fancied) and had a complete dependence on his mother (he died months after she did). Waldman probes these and other significant personal issues (such as his association with Surrealism, and how the younger artists that have passed through him have influenced his work) and examines how they factored in Cornell's art. The book is generous with illustrations - Waldman supports her points with not only Cornell's work, but with other artists that were influential to him.

However, it is the lonely and telling poetry of Cornell's work that is the heart of this book. The boxes that Waldman chooses to include are presented intelligently, and beautifully. The innocence and nostalgia of each box is lovingly portrayed. The Medici series - Cornell's especially heartbreakingly beautiful and mysteriously passionate work - is presented perfectly by Waldman with thoughtful commentary and context, capturing in full its yearning and ardor. Waldman has given us a book that speaks eloquently about why Cornell is an artists people will remember for generations hereafter.

Book Description

Joseph Cornell (1903-1972), the American assemblage artist, was a quirky but passionate collector of bric-a-brac who used trinkets, scraps of paper, paint, and lots of glue to arrange imaginative worlds inside glass-front wooden boxes and frames. While evoking the Victorian era and childhood pastimes, Cornell developed a collage technique that radically transformed the way art could be made--and seen--for generations to come.

Book Description

In Dime-Store Alchemy, poet Charles Simic re?ects on the life and work of Joseph Cornell,
the maverick surrealist who is one of America’s great artists. Simic’s spare prose is as enchanting and luminous as the mysterious boxes of found objects for which Cornell is justly renowned.

In a work that is in various degrees biography, criticism, and sheer poetry, Simic tells the story of Cornell’s life and illuminates the hermetic mysteries of his extraordinary boxes–objects in which private obsessions were alchemically transformed into enduring works of art. Simic sees Cornell’s work as exemplifying a distinctively American aesthetic, open to the world, improvisatory, at once homemade and universal, modest and teasing and profound. Full of unexpected riches, Dime-Store Alchemy is both an entrancing meditation on the nature of art and a perfect introduction to a major American artist by one of his peers–a book that can be perused at length or dipped into at leisure again and again.

Then you will love this book of short essays and responses to Joseph Cornell's work by our Poet Laureate. It's amll and without a dustjacket, quite elegant and easy to take with you to read when you find yourself with a few spare minutes.

5 out of 5 stars Dime Store Alchemy: The Art of Joseph Cornell.......2007-05-26

This elegant book reminded me of "Einstien's Dreams." The book is about the genius of imagination. Cornell's provincial life gave him the opportunity to observe his world closely and let it expand into his art. The writing by the poet Simic is a piece of art in itself.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious!!.......2001-08-07

Reading Dime-Store Alchemy is a fine way to get to know Joseph Cornell's work (and of course Charles Simic's). Simic uses a writing style which pieces together different elements of Cornell's favorite authors and poets, beautifully reflecting the montage operation created by Cornell himself. As Simic ambiguously reveals aspects of Cornell's life in New York City, the reader finds him/herself on the same search for an understanding of beauty that the artist spent his entire life investigating. Don't miss it!

Book Description

Published to celebrate the centennial of Joseph Cornell's birth in 1903, this book provides a fresh, multidimensional perspective on the pioneering modern artist. Lavishly illustrated with over seventy-five boxes and collages, as well as images of the fascinating source material that the artist collected to create his exquisitely crafted worlds, the book communicates to the reader the sense of surprise and delight that one experiences upon viewing the actual boxes with their toys, stuffed birds, maps, clay pipes, marbles, shells, and other paraphernalia of daily life.

The book's essays bring together the expertise of Lynda Roscoe Hartigan, chief curator at the Peabody Essex Museum and former director of the Joseph Cornell Study Center; the compelling commentary of Walter Hopps, art dealer, museum curator, and the artist's personal friend; the wide-ranging scholarship of Richard Vine, author and managing editor of Art in America; and the sensitivity of Robert Lehrman, a leading Cornell collector whose firsthand experience lends this publication its distinctive intimacy. Among the topics explored are the role of dualities in the artistic process, the dominant themes of Cornell's oeuvre, and the importance of his Christian Science faith.

Through its innovative technology, the book's companion DVD-ROM delivers an encyclopedic compendium of the artist's works and source materials, the insights of numerous scholars and critics, access to Cornell's experimental films, and interactive opportunities that promote an utterly unprecedented investigation of his art. 231 illustrations, 205 in color; DVD-ROM.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good photographs of the Cornell's works, but..........2007-09-16

the binding is really bad. My copy is gone in pieces after
a couple of careful consultations.

5 out of 5 stars Volume of J. Cornell's work.......2007-02-17

Excellent reproduction plates of Cornell's art. The advanced artist will appreciate how Cornell was able to achieve the difficult task of creating good composition within a box.

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY A GOOD ILLUSTRATED CORNELL BOOK.......2005-09-10

Finally there is a good book of Cornell's work (shadow boxes) published, using detailed color photographs and remarkable notes/text. This book presents the reader with in-depth insight into the ingeniuty of Mr. Cornell, God rest his tireless, creative soul!. Features an excellent biographical introduction as well. The photo- illustrations are superb, showing both overall and macro views of his boxes. Highly recommend this book for the Cornell lover, also makes for a great coffe table book too for your average art-loving page flipper.

5 out of 5 stars A must for Cornell fans.......2005-09-06

The photography and commentary of this book alone are worth the price if you are wanting to learn about a remarkable artist.

But the DVD included with the book is truly amazing for those wanting to explore Cornell's work without the benefit of a museum viewing. Truly educational and yet simply organized and easy to view.

5 out of 5 stars Essential material for the serious Cornell fan.......2005-09-03

I'm immensely satisfied with this book. The photography is beautiful and does as much justice to Cornell's work as can be done in a 2D format. But the meat of the package comes in the DVD-ROM included. the sheer volume of information, images, films and resources presented is nearly overwhelming. The close-up, navagatable, hi-res images of Cornells collages, boxes and objects, the written essays, histories and intervies, and especially the elusive collage films presented in a beautiful, fun to navigate wonderland of extra stuff make the DVD alone worth the price. and you can get it for something like 20 dollars less online? and even if you buy it for full price, if you're seriously into having everyday access to this amazing artist's work, you almost can't afford not to get this. anyway, i like it. hope this helps.

      Book Description

Joseph Cornell is well known for the oneiric quality of his art and films. Many have tried, often in vain, to put into words the strange power of his boxes--toy-like constructions whose playfulness and humor are anchored in a profound melancholy and loneliness. "Slot machines of visions," said Octavio Paz. Cornell himself is said to have enjoyed children's responses to his work; perhaps because nothing prepares one better for viewing a Cornell box than having an unbiased mind. Catherine Corman has combed through the voluminous diaries that Cornell kept throughout his life, now in the care of the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art, in search of the artist's own dreams. What she found are brief flashes of images, and short, enigmatic narratives of illumination--the verbal equivalent of Cornell boxes. In 1993, Mary Ann Caws edited a large portion of Cornell's diaries for publication by Thames & Hudson, an invaluable sourcebook for Cornell studies. This new, shorter volume is a poetic addition to that literature, equally indispensible to those interested in Cornell as it contains previously unpublished writings, but also because it is as intriguing and mysterious to the uninitiated as the magical boxes themselves.
