This book is very practical and easy to understand. Parts might be a little basic, but they're definitely helpful. This book was recommended for a Directing 2 class in which Directors in Rehearsal (Cole), The Open Door (Brook), and A Director Prepares (Bogart) were all required. Which one do you think I read first, AND w/ the greatest of ease? Great for those just beginning to direct as well as teachers.

I wish someone had recommended this book before I directed half a dozen musicals and learned its contents the hard way...trial and error. While the information is largely common sense, the organization saves the time of having to figure it out yourself. I recommend it highly...especially for school and community theatre.
Everything a director needs to know gathered in one place........2001-05-15
I discovered this book through a fellow theatre professor and was immediately impressed with its scope of information. So impressed, in fact, that I'm planning to adopt it as the textbook for an advanced directing course I teach that culminates with the production of a one-act play.
The authors have covered everything a director needs to know, from selecting the play through rehearsals, peformances,and marketing. This book would be especially helpful for high school/community theatre directors, or those in similar situations where the director is expected to assume some of the responsibilites usually handled by a producer. (The sample forms are especially good for these organizations.)
Although not a substitute for a more thorough book on the pure basics of directing (blocking, composition, etc.), this is an excellent supplement that reviews those basics and enhances them with elements that often aren't covered in directing classes but are faced in production (putting together program copy, for example). Although I've been directing professionally for over 12 years, I immediately ordered a copy for myself after examining it.
THE CHECKLISTS ARE WORTH THE PRICE ALONE.......2000-12-04
While I didn't actually get any practicle directing techniques from this kit, I wasn't actually looking for any either. Anyone who thinks they can learn to direct from a book, shouldn't be directing in the first place. The kit has several checklists and forms that are a great resource for the new and more experienced director. It also serves as a solid outline of what is or should be involved with directing. It won't teach you how to direct, but then again, that's not the intent.

Essential and Practical Tool.......2006-10-23
I am glad that I found this book! This book provides the essential and practical tools needed to execute the tasks of directing. I have seen that directors often have a lot of "creative" ideas but need some help with the "practical" aspects. This book is so practical that it will make the job of directing so much easier for anyone. Almost every community puts on productions from time to time. I recommend this book as a staple to keep referrring back to. The templates within the book are also very useful.

On With the Show is a great book for anyone involved in theater production! It is filled with rehearsal tips and ideas that give guidance on how to rehearse successfully. This is also a great resource for kids in musicals or plays. Kids need to learn what to do when they get home from rehearsal. On With the Show gives practical ideas for kids on what to work on at home, which I haven't seen anywhere else. Sheri Bestor also provides ideas on how to memorize your lines. Everyone can use help in this area. I highly recommend this book for adults and kids involved with theater!

Part one defines the actor's inner life as he builds a character, living the role as if the given circumstance is happening to him. The exercises, games, and improvisations employ Stanislavski acting principles, allowing the actor to gain comfort and confidence in playing any role. Part two is devoted to physical aspects of acting a role, including movement, speech, costuming the character, script dissection, and tempo/rhythm, to enhance natural behavior. Many exercises will aid actors to employ all acting principles. Parts three and four contain theatre exercises suitable for acting students of all ages. The selected activities used by Stanislavski in his renowned Moscow Art Theatre are most appealing for advanced performing artists. Part five is a teaching syllabus to guide instructors in any school or college theatre program. Adjustments of the assignments are defined so as to guide teachers to employ the contents for any two, three or four year program. Part six illustrates dissected working play scripts. The director or actor will gain exciting new levels of creative artistry by employing this valued Stanislavski system. READ THIS BOOK!
Gordon Balls' intimate recollection of a fascinating time in American history allows a vicarious experience for those unwilling or unable (due to age) to participate. I know of no better writing from a personal perspective on the exploration, freedom, generational misunderstandings and sometimes, excesses, of the 1960's. Perhaps Ball will consider an autobiography of his early teenage years, 60s experiences, and later periods and indicating how those have shaped him. One may drop acid AND love baseball, right?
For Those Who Missed (or Miss) the 1960s.......2000-02-07
The best books about the 1960s were written by people who disliked much about the time: Joan Didion and Tom Wolfe. For those who want to know why one might miss the decade, what it was like to be young and arts-oriented and practice free love, I recommend Gordon Ball's book.
PERSISTANCE OF MEMORY.......1999-10-19
Gordon Ball's fine little memoir of the distant past is a bitter sweet account of growing up to a world that was not what we told it was. I guess, self discovery of the world, is always narcissistic and solipsitic. I admire so much his persistance and devotion to those that influenced and guided him in that discovery. He continues to do a great service to the legacy of that era. We may discover that the 60's are not over. Not by a long shot.
