A nice book in its first part. The second is just a collection of software reviews. Software is so rapidly evolving that it can get obsolete too fast. Anyways it's a good overall image of the PalmOs platform

5 out of 5 stars Good coverage of 3rd party stuff for the Palm.......2001-08-01

Firstly this book title is misleading - it isn't a book for operating system hackers/app developers. What it is is a very good guide to the built in apps and add-on applications (mainly software, though there is a bit out of date section on hardware).

It isn't condesending or authoratarian, rather it comes across as a set of balanced well thought out independent reviews. Not all of the reviewed s/w is on the CD - and the CD front end is slow and clumsy.

The reviews of applications give the impression the author has actually used them and isn't regurgitating the applications marketing. He describes what each program does and, in may cases, what it doesn't. For most apps he gives the cost, memory requrement and developer, plus lists developers web sites. There is a good list of contacts in the back. Hardware section is good with pictures of most of the stuff. A good section on batteries but nothing on the serial connector. Not all available hardware is covered, though of course thats asking a bit much. One thing missing is a consise list/table/index of all the apps covered. I'm looking forward to an update of the book and definately recommend it to anyone wanting to expand thier palm functionality.

3 out of 5 stars TOO MANY RECIPES!!.......2005-10-18

I liked this book, but there were TOO MANY RECIPES!!!!!!!!!!!! I almost died from reading all the recipies. DO NOT READ THIS BOOK UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES IF YOU DON'T LIKE RECIPES!!!!! After reading this book you will have died in four different dimensions!! I do not recommend this for anyone who does not like recipes!!

This book is mainly about a boy named Leroy who solves lots of
cases and learns to be a good cook. Many of the cases are very
exciting, but the recipes -- not so much. If you can solve
the cases as well as he can, you could probably start your own
detective agency like he did. He has his own business where
people walk up to it and pay him 25 cents to have him solve
cases for them. Leroy's nick name is Encyclopedia because he's
so smart he's like an encyclopedia with feet walking around,
ready to solve any case.

Without the recipes, I would give this book five stars since
the cases are so exciting.

4 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia Brown is everyone's favorite cook!.......2001-04-11

Encyclopedia Brown is everybody's favorite cook, in this case the food he cooks is a mystery. There is a mystery at the end of each chapter. He knows lots of recipes. One of the mysteries is the cake. Read the book to find out who takes the cake.

I recommend this book to people who like to read cooking books as well as a mystery story. If you get hungry as you read a cooking book, I recommend that you should not read it. It has lots of good recipes.

    Book Description

For over two decades Parkett has presented unparalleled collaborations with key international contemporary artists, and paired their work with discussions by esteemed writers and critics. Issue No. 75 spotlights Kai Althoff, Glenn Brown, and Dana Schutz. Althoff's portfolio includes both erotically charged paintings of men in uniform and innocent "coming-of-age" colored pencil illustrations, sensuous work--at once homoerotic, punk, and devotional--that radiates a somber luminosity. Then there are his awkward, life-size installations, which appear to be made by some sort of drunken puppeteer. The "master" Glenn Brown employs a sorcerer's bag of techniques to produce retro-Rococo paintings and sculptures, maximally intricate, hyper-composed, and rendered with the intense detail of a tripped-out sci-fi animator. His fully-realized, uninhabitable dreamscapes reflect on the bizarre world in which we all live. Dana Schutz's painterly virtuosity and devotion to the medium also look back in time, but her brilliant, confessional exposition is very much of the now. Be the subject a dissected corpse, a dazed hippie chick, or her own boyfriend on the beach, Schutz's painted world, her "monster mash," is decadently radiant and ecstatic, and also frighteningly ghoulish. Text contributors include Jordan Kantor, Viet Loers, Oliver Koerner von Gustorf, Jennifer Higgie, Trevor Smith, Jarg Heiser, Michael Lobel, Daniel Baumann, Rachel Kent, Duncan Fallowell, Angelika Affentranger-Kichrath, Gian Maraniello and Rudolf Schmitz. Plus a photographic insert by Balthasar Burkhard, and spine by Carsten Nicolai.

"A Brown Bag Life" is a silent masterpiece yet to be unveiled!
Amazingly, Mr. Anderson sets you right in the shoes of the characters on hand and takes you on an emotional ride through life as we ALL have known it...through ourselves or through someone close! Stimulating..as to put your mind in a place of perspective, heroes of all sorts develop and life lessons are learned through the sport of wrestling, and in a sense...the "sport" of life. Never letting go of how simple and complex life can be all at once, Glenn captivates you through a work that cannot be put down without carrying the story-line with you in your pocket throughout the day!!!
Well done, and kudos to what should be an "award winner!!!"
Take down...2 points, and a downright win ("pin") for Glenn Anderson!!!

      5 out of 5 stars Great Read!.......2004-01-08

I really enjoyed reading this book - it's smart, it's funny, and it's well written. I was hooked right away even though I'm not familiar with wrestling at all - it's about so much more than wrestling! Mr. Anderson paints a very vivid picture of Coach Thomas McCloskey; he's a bit rough around the edges, and he's kinda lost his purpose in life, but he's a real stand-up guy, and you'll find yourself pulling for him (and the guys he coaches) all the way. I loved it, I can highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars A great novel about the glory days, wrestling, & life........2003-12-19

A Brown Bag Life is a story that almost everyone can relate to. I read a lot of books by very well-known authors and I believe this was one of the best books I've read. We all know a Thomas McCloskey from our high school and college days. This book takes you back, bringing about your own memories, and let's you revisit the glory days, the low days, and those wonderful days of actually putting your life together....finally! This was a very entertaining book. I read it in four days, actually making time to read as I was hard-pressed to put it down. I'm anxious for the next book by Glenn Anderson.

I had a chance to look through this book recently at a friends house, and I was pretty impressed. It contains a bunch of useful maps, which from my experience are more than adequate to help you get where your going, or find a place to go if you don't know where you want to be. It also has page upon page of great information on all things walking in Australia. Well worth the price.

        Book Description

        Dear Reader:

The Childhood of Famous Americans series, sixty-five years old in 1997, chronicles the early years of famous American men and women in an accessible manner. Each book is faithful in spirit to the values and experiences that influenced the person's development. History is fleshed out with fictionalized details, and conversations have been added to make the stories come alive to today's reader, but every reasonable effort has been made to make the stories consistent with the events, ethics, and character of their subjects.

These books reaffirm the importance of our American heritage. We hope you learn to love the heroes and heroines who helped shape this great country. And by doing so, we hope you also develop a lasting love for the nation that gave them the opportunity to make their dreams come true. It will do the same for you.

        Happy Reading!

          Book Description

In this wonderful collection of short biographies, you'll meet a fascinating group of women and men from many different backgrounds. The one trait they have in common is their passion for creating beautiful buildings. The architects you will discover in this book are important both for the buildings they created and for their leadership in developing new designs, construction techniques, and ideas about the role of architecture in our culture.

Award-winning author Patricia Brown Glenn takes you on a wondrous journey across time and space and introduces you to each gifted artist. You'll learn how they became interested in architecture, the inspiration for their ideas, and how they influenced their contemporaries as well as later generations of architects. You'll also take a closer look at each architect's most glorious projects. And there are plenty of surprises along the way. Did you know that Thomas Jefferson, writer of the Declaration of Independence and one of our most memorable presidents, was also America's first great architect? You'll also discover the woman who designed William Randolph Hearst's fabled mansion, San Simeon; the architect who, in the 1940s, was banned from building his home in Los Angeles' fanciest suburb because he was black; and the Asian-American who has created some of our most impressive office towers, museums, and libraries.

Complete with more than 100 colorful drawings from illustrator Joe Stites, Discover America's Favorite Architects is fun as well as informative. It is a terrific source for writing school reports, a great companion for family vacations, and an inspiration for young readers who might want to grow up to be architects one day.

            Book Description

"I am a little bit like Doctor Frankenstein because I create my pictures with the remains and dead parts of other artists' works." So says the rising London painter, Glenn Brown, while essayist Tom Morton likens Brown's canvases to a zombie comedy. Thus, "Theater" is a half-length portrait of a skeleton whose bones resemble a slimy organic mass of meat, paste and raspberry ice cream, while the sad mutant heads in "Asylums of Mars" and "The Hinterland" look as if they were bred in a mad geneticist's laboratory. In this monograph, six recent works are presented on deluxe tipped-in color plates, each accompanied by a detail that reveals Brown's technique: the artist fills his grounds with flowing whirlpools of shifting colors--but what initially look like thick brushstrokes are revealed upon closer examination to be very thin layers of paint that could almost be mistaken for photographs or digitally manipulated prints.
