I have to share the same sentiments with a few of the other reviewers. Typically, when a CD-ROM comes with a book of this nature, one would expect the visual content (in this case the patterns displayed in this book) to be available on the disc itself. Not the case here, which I thought was a bit deceiving. It would have been much smarter (and more practical for the end user) for the book author to have provided the patterns as EPS files for use in a vector based software application such as Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw. Otherwise what good is it to look at these patterns when you can't easily recreate them?

1 out of 5 stars Junk.......2005-11-13

First of all the content on the CD is not resuable in anyway. It comes with a semi-functional interactive CD that will allow you to print patterns but they are all locked Flash files so you can not use them in illustrator or in any other program.

The book itself is page after page of repeated patterns with slight color adjustment. The patterns are uninspired and dated. I would not recommend this book to anyone if I could give it negative stars i would.

5 out of 5 stars Georgeous patterns you can change color and printout.......2005-11-10

This book is filled with beautiful and diverse patters, some really modern and clean, others more ornate and traditional. The best part is the CD lets you change the colors in the patterns and then print them out for you to use. It's great for everything from professional design jobs to scrapbooking and personal projects.

1 out of 5 stars unhelpful book..........2005-09-24

I bought this book because i thought i can use the pattern in the cd provided, but unfortunately you cant use any of them, they saved it as flash animation format. Unlike the other book I have purchased "the complete pattern library" where you can use any pattern in the book and even change the colors of them.

Inspirational, detailed, visually pleasing, good for research, and refrence. A must have if you are in the fashion industry

5 out of 5 stars Extremely useful -- One of the best I've seen.......2006-08-23

This is a great resource for costume designers and anyone else wanting to capture the look of a particular period. The drawings are detailed and include men's and women's styles for each year from the 1920s to the 1980s. Examples include evening wear, daywear, sportswear, and even underwear and wedding fashions. Accessories (hats, shoes, handbags) are also pictured. Plenty can be learned just from looking at the pictures, although the descriptions that follow help to summarize the particulars of line, fabrics, etc. Very easy to use. I LOVE this book and will refer to it often in my work. I wish Peacock would do one for earlier fashions.

Book Description

A companion volume to John Peacock's 20th Century Fashion and Men's Fashion, Fashion Accessories is the most comprehensive record ever published of fashion accessories throughout the twentieth century. More than 2000 full-color drawings--the result of extensive research into paintings, photographs, and the accessories themselves--reproduce each original item in meticulous detail, accompanied by a complete description. The book covers every kind of high-fashion male and female accessory for both day and evening wear: hats and caps; shoes, boots, slippers, and sandals; bags and purses; umbrellas and parasols; jewelry; scarves, stoles, and capes; gloves and belts; cravats, ties, and bow-ties. It includes a wide range of streetwear and sportswear, from baseball caps to plastic sandals, and every variety of the ubiquitous late-century sports shoe. All the century's archetypal accessories are identified, from the luxurious ostrich-feather and flower-bedecked hat of the 1910s and the cloche and pearl necklace of the 1920s, to the velvet scarf and mini-backpack of the 1990s. A final reference section contains a comprehensive bibliography and a chart that shows at a glance how accessories have evolved since 1900. There are biographies of the century's most influential accessories designers, from Salvatore Ferragamo and Manolo Blahnik to Patrick Cox and Georgina von Etzdorf, plus short histories of companies and firms that have played an important role in accessory design. For fashion enthusiasts, historians, and collectors, as well as designers working in the performing arts, this book will be the definitive reference work on twentieth-century accessories. Over 2000 color illustrations.

Even though I wish that these were photos, I recognize just how much work went into compiling this book and others that John Peacock has produced. This is a great book to help one understand visually subtle changes in fashion over the decades of the 20th century. I found it very interesting and feel that I will constantly reach for it for inspiration and ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source book.......2005-11-08

I first saw this book in Casa Mila museum shop in Barcelona and later regretted that I didn't buy it. I was delighted to find this book on Amazon. It contains pages after pages of very detailed colour drawings of men's and women's accessories through the century including the explanations. Moreover, included are the pictures of the complete look of each decade. It is an excellent, complete and clear source book which can be a great aid for such a perfectionist like me

5 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD.......2007-01-03

This is a very good reference book to have if you are working in the film/TV industrie or even Theatre or any other fashion area. it gives you a very good overview of every period for men, women, and children (which is very rare to find). it even shows accessories, hats gloves etc.

3 out of 5 stars Some strengths, but some serious weaknesses.......2006-08-19

I am very disappointed with this item. I bought it on the strength of Peacock's Shoes: the Complete Sourcebook, and the fact that Thames & Hudson was the publisher (another reputation bites the dust). One problem that both books share is that the title doesn't really convey the scope. I realize that it is hard to define vague areas, but this is more or less Western European and American fashion, it is only about women's clothing, not even the 2003 reprint covers the entire 20th century (it's 1900-1990), and "complete sourcebook" is a bit of an exaggeration. Christian Lacroix claims in the Preface that the fashions of the 1990s are too diverse to be covered. How "fashion" is defined is one of the chief problems with the book.

The basic plan is a good one: fashions for various occasions along with their associated underwear and accessories. The book is broken up into sections covering 5 years (e.g.,1900-1904) Each section has a page each of haute couture, accessories (usually shoes, purses, hats, wraps, and oddly enough, tops such as blouses and sweaters), leisure wear, underwear, evening wear, bridal fashions and two pages of day wear. Coats, jewelry, wigs, gloves, etc., are covered only sporadically. All are illustrated in color by 1100 drawings of a number of garments with dates; only the haute couture are attributed to specific designers. Apparently in order to save pages, the keys to the illustrations, with detailed information about the items, are grouped together in 10 year increments. I find this a bit annoying, but I understand the motive. This is followed by a very useful section with silhouettes for the beginning and ending of each five year period, with description of typical details: e.g. fabrics, trimmings, necklines. This is followed by brief vitas of designers and a bibliography.

There are some oddities in this admirable plan. I was born in 1953, so I remember several decades. Slips start vanishing from the illustrations in the 1960s, even though Peacock still shows plenty of dresses, and are pretty much absent in the 1980s. I suspect more women wore slips later: dresses and skirts were actually more popular than a decade earlier. Contrary to the impression conveyed in the drawings, women did not stop carrying purses in 1970-1974 and 1985-1990.

Worse, Peacock has ignored some of the major trends in 20th century clothing: blue jeans and denim; the decline of hats; and the rise of the woman's business suit. Even given that a book of this size can't really be "complete" this is a major failing.

The industrial revolution made clothing relatively cheap: even the poor could afford new clothing and affect designs. As Christian Lacroix says in the Preface: "... the more the century progresses, the greater the gulf between magazine images of fashion and what is actually being worn on the street." Peacock seems to ignore this. Lacroix continues less accurately: "There is no risk of that with this book ... the every day is ... side by side with fashion's idealized images."

Peacock himself says: "As dictated by the couturier, fashionable dress represents an ideal which few women attain but to which many aspire." He states that this book is his impression of the "ideal". I question defining fashion as strictly determined by couturiers or designers. They are a phenomenon of only the last couple of centuries; fashion existed long before they did. Historically, fashionable clothing was available only to the fairly wealthy and was an indication of their status. Now more people can afford designer clothes, but choose not to wear them. Bell-bottom jeans were as much a fashion of the 1960s-1970s as mini-skirts. Further, jeans were later created by some of the fashion designers that Peacock lists.

There are only hints that hats were pretty much abandoned except for cold weather and, in some cases, religious venues. Someone once described this as the greatest revolution in Western costume! When I was young, most women would never have gone to church or anything other than the most casual event without gloves and a hat. If they didn't have a hat, many put a handkerchief on their head. Now it is very common for women to be bare-headed.

Lastly, the business suit, particularly the knee-length versions that have probably been the most common, are virtually ignored.

The variety of types of garments are a major strength of this book, and some people may want it for that reason. I think it is a very poor representation of how people, even those consciously following some fashion, actually dressed. I suspect that many people with a great interest in the fashion of these years have this information already, and it is questionable as a sole, basic source. Certainly I wouldn't suggest that a novelist, say, rely on this as a representation of clothing in the last half of the century at least.

4 out of 5 stars Historical Documentation of Fashion.......2003-12-29

This is a nice book. I want to be a fashion design so my mom thought this would be a nice book,...it wasn't what I was hoping for but it helps if I ever have 'designer's block.' You can look at some of the designs and certain trends and work them into a peice of clothing. And since I've had a bit of trouble drawing my design with people and poses this gives me an idea of what it needs to look like but it doesn't help you draw better. All in all it's a pretty nice book, but not the kind I would have bought but I'm glad my mom did because it's given me lots of ideas.

5 out of 5 stars great "handbook".......2003-03-19

I'm a vintage clothing dealer and use this book constantly. Not as a reference for myself (there are many better books on this subject) but as a guide to show customers a general guide to the "look" of a certain period. The picture outline format is great for just illustrating trends in outfits from the time. I show them how you can capture a look with certain styles or accessories that may or even may not be period. It is a wonderful tool that I have used many, many times. I may not recommend it as a comprehensive guide to vintage, but as a visual tool for a quick education at a glance, you can't beat it.

3 out of 5 stars Like a book of paper doll cutouts.......2000-10-05

The book is filled with illustrations which are very nice, but I wasn't too impressed. Had I not bought it through Amazon, and was able to flip through it beforehand, I probably would not have bought it. Still, it looks pretty good on a coffee table.

Book Description

The most comprehensive and detailed history of shoes ever published, with more than 2000 specially drawn illustrations.

John Peacock charts the development of every kind and style of footwear from earliest times to the present day, for both men and women. His drawings reproduce in meticulous detail a host of representative examples from every era: the simple sandals of Ancient Egypt, made from natural fibers; exquisite Greek footwear of the "Golden Age," including boots made from rawhide with leather linings and leg bindings; richly embroidered and bejeweled shoes of the Byzantine empire; the fantastic pike-toed boots newly fashionable in the fourteenth century; the hugely exaggerated platform heels of the sixteenth century; eighteenth-century women's slippers of the finest silk; and a huge range of contemporary shoes, from sneakers and stilettos to the latest footwear in radical materials and experimental styles.

The pictures are arranged in six chronological sections and accompanied by full descriptions, including details of materials, heel and toe styles, decorations, and fastenings. An invaluable reference section includes a time chart summarizing the development of shoes throughout the centuries, a concise bibliography, and biographies and histories of the world's leading shoe designers and manufacturers, including Manolo Blahnik, Salvatore Ferragamo, Charles Jourdan, Roger Vivier, and Vivienne Westwood.

This encyclopaedic survey, with its colorful and detailed illustrations, will become the unrivaled reference work in its field, indispensable to any shoe enthusiast, designer, or collector. Over 2000 illustrations, 800 in color.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Give Thanks for this is as Good as it Gets.......2006-12-26

You really must give thanks to the author for having given us this book. As usual it is peerless in the degree of historical accuracy and detail that his illustrations unfailingly provide. Morever, it is one of the rare books that give us as much insight into men's footwear as it does into the history of women's footwear.

Of course it would have been nice to have detailed photographs of original ancient footwear or even those from a century or two ago. Sadly, many specimens have not survived at all or at often at best are in poor condition and are kept hidden from regular open exhibition at textile museums that do own them due to their fragility. In most cases the original appearances of the footwear have to be reconstructed using paintings and published period sources along with a dash of imagination. The results are illustrations that bring to life what the historic examples would have looked like to a far greater degree than pictures of old footwear delapidated beyond recognition.

Granted these inevitable limitations, the splendid size and quality of the illustrations makes this a tour de force vastly superior to anything else likely to go into print for many years, if not decades, to come

5 out of 5 stars Excellent within its parameters.......2006-08-10

I waffled between 4 and 5 stars for this. I think Peacock could do with some slightly more accurate titles. This is a history of western European shoes, with ancient Mesopotamia, Greece and Egypt thrown in for length. Beyond those, there is nothing on even eastern Europe, let alone Asia, Africa, etc. I also suspect from his books that Peacock does not really approve of our casual age. I saw only a single tennis shoe; none of the clogs and earth shoes that were so typical of the late 1960s and early 1970s; and none of the elaborate athletic shoes. Peacock does say that he is focusing chiefly on fashionable shoes, but I think that the high-end athletic shoes qualify as designer models, even if the other don't.

Given that, it's wonderful for what it does cover. Men's shoes are included. My favorite part is the ancient shoes; I have never seen such a variety illustrated.

The pages have small but clear drawings of usually 7 or 8 shoes per page, with minimal labelling. More detailed labelling follows. The time length covered by each section varies; as one might expect, shorter period are covered for more recent shoes. This is not as lush as the photographic collections of shoes, but I think it's more helpful as a history, especially for older styles which may have been reconstructed from fragments.

The introduction gives a brief history of the development of the shoes. There is a timeline where the shoes are reproduced as outline drawings to get a idea of the flow of change. This is followed by a concise history of designers and companies, and a bibliography.

So, it doesn't have a scholarly historical text, I don't recommend it for people as a book for gaping over startling shoes, but it is a very good visual history.

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive history of shoes.......2005-09-04

Fans of the shoe, whether they be fashion-oriented or art-oriented, will welcome John Peacock's fabulous book Shoes: The Complete Sourcebook, which holds over 2,000 illustrations to accompany a comprehensive history of shoes. Another plus: both men's and women's shoes are covered, from the earliest known shoes to modern times; and plenty of color accompany a chronological history which covers footwear trends, manufacture, and influences on changing styles. If only one fashion or art book on shoes were to be chosen for a discriminating library, it should be Peacock's: he leaves nothing out.

2 out of 5 stars Complete hype.......2005-05-21

I happened upon this book in the bookstore, and also recently saw it mentioned in Harper's Bazar. All they say is that it is a "comprehensive history of footware." What they fail to mention is that all the pictures are illustrations. There is not one single color photograph of an original shoe. If you check the product description above that Amazon provides, it does tell you that it has illustrations, but many people don't know to look there.

While the drawings are nicely done, they didn't give me the same thrill that seeing an actual photo of an original shoe would have. The pictures on the cover are exactly the same type of drawing and the same type of composition that you will see of other shoes in the book. I can understand having drawings of shoes from hundreds of years ago, but not having any photos of modern shoes seems a cop out.

The book is informative, but I think it is in no way "complete." It gives an overview of shoes from different eras, but does not scratch much beyond the surface. So, you get a little of everything and some representative pictures of the average footware, but not a good sense of what might be unique about a particular time period beyond what you can see for yourself in the illustrations.

I've read other books on fashion history that do a better job than this book in covering a wide range of time periods (such as Decades of Beauty). However, these books did not contain only shoes. I have yet to find a book about shoes that has both good photographs and informative text.

So, due to lack of competition, some people may want to check this book out because there isn't anything else out there. But, I would not reccomend buying it sight unseen. I think that this book would be too elementary for a fashion historan or someone into the history of shoes, but too boring for the average person to want to buy. I definitely would not recommend it for someone with a shoe fetish. It was worth the time I spent looking through it at the bookstore because of some of the text, but mostly because of the lack of photos I did not buy it.

Book Description

Here, in more than 1,500 full-color, specially drawn illustrations, is the most comprehensive and detailed history and sourcebook of twentieth-century jewelry ever published. From the 1900s to the year 2000, John Peacock charts the development of every kind and style of jewelry for both women and men: brooches, earrings, necklaces, pendants, bracelets, buckles, dress clips, hair ornaments, rings, watches, cufflinks, and more. Both precious jewelry and costume jewelry appear, as does novelty jewelry.

John Peacock is the doyen of fashion illustration. His many books on men's and women's fashion and accessories form an unparalleled library for students, collectors, and fashion enthusiasts alike. Many years of research for this book, using paintings, photographs, and the jewelry itself, have allowed him to reproduce in meticulous detail a host of representative pieces from every year of the century. Arranged in twenty-year sections, the pictures are accompanied by complete descriptions of each piece, including details of materials, stones, designs, fastenings, mounts, and surrounds.

These highly detailed drawings allow the reader to see how the styles of the great twentieth-century designers and jewelry houses—among them Lalique, Cartier, Chaumet, Chanel, Jensen, Verdura, Schlumberger, Haskell, Harry Winston, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Tiffany & Co.—have filtered down to mass-produced and costume jewelry. Every style is represented: Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts pieces of the early twentieth century; Art Deco of the twenties and thirties; cocktail jewelry of the forties and fifties; Pop Art creations of the sixties and seventies; flashy, ostentatious jewelry of the eighties; and more delicate, retro jewelry of the nineties. The invaluable reference section includes biographies of the century's leading international jewelers and a concise bibliography. Over 1500 color illustrations.

2 out of 5 stars Totally not happy with it!!!.......2007-05-12

This can only be a reference book, flip it over once and you'll get bored. Also, don't expect to find good pictures. I bought it at it's original cost, it's not even worth at that cost.

4 out of 5 stars A colorful survey.......2004-03-19

"20th Century Jewelry: The Complete Sourcebook," by John Peacock, covers many different types of jewelry: brooches, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, finger rings, buckles, men's cufflinks, etc. The cover boasts that the book contains over 1,500 color illustrations. These illustrations are drawings (not photographs, as is the case in many other books on jewelry). These drawings are very well done; they are lively with color and intricate detail.

The illustrated pieces reflect a rich variety of motifs and stylistic approaches: bold geometric forms, floral designs, whimsical characters, religious iconography, etc. The book also includes a section with short biographies of designers and companies; among those profiled are Boucher & Cie, Hattie Carnegie, Faberge, Rene Lalique, Paloma Picasso, Swarovski, and more.

Yes, the contents of this book are truly beautiful to look at. But I found the book's arrangement to be somewhat cumbersome. The captions to the pictures are on separate pages, often several pages away, so I found myself constantly flipping back and forth in the book just to identify the pieces. To identify a piece, you have to go to the separate page which contains small black-and-white numbered outlines of the pieces on the page you were initially looking at. These numbers are tied to a set of captions next to the key diagram. It struck me as an excessively complicated system; I have seen other jewelry overview books which keep the captions and illustrations on the same page in a more user-friendly system. Still, the beauty and variety within this book make it worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars As Good As It Gets.......2006-12-07

Books on men's dress history of any quality are few and far between so it is a delight to find something a thorough as this one. Most of the time all you find are snippets of information in between the volumes of things written on women's fashion history but here at last is a book devoted entirely to men's dress. I know of no other book which has so many pictures as this one with so many eras being covered in this degree of detail. Some eras are covered better with the greatest strength probably the 18th to early 20th century with other periods being covered in less depth.

Illustrations are plenty in this book and as usual from this author each one is carefully researched and beautifully demonstrate the essential feature of each period's dress. One might complain that photographs might have been better but the problem is that limited examples of original clothing have survived or have done so only in poor condition. Museums are also reluctant to display many things because of the fragility of the items.

Of course you can complain about a lack of text too but that is to look a gift horse in the mouth. You can likewise also complain that regional variations in dress (England vs France vs Germany vs Italy vs Russia etc) are not covered and nor the difference between different social groups (based on profession and social class) throughout the ages. However if you put in full textural explanations about the social implications of dress in Shakesperean England or the pro-aristocratic significance of ruffled shirts in post-revolutionary France you would soon end up with an encyclopedia running several volumes. The fact is this book is as good as it gets until some publisher demonstrates a willingness to print such a massive undertaking. So give thanks that someone has published this gem in the meanwhile for it is truly excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Highly useful book on men's fashion.......2004-04-20

Just a picture book? A GREAT picture book, with detailed captions to help you understand what you see.

Most fashion reference books have a few sketches or photos of men's attire for each 20-100 years or so. This book has dozens. For example, Day Wear 1897-1900 has 8 full sketches including shoes and accessories and another 8 for Day Wear 1900-1907. Then there's Sports & Leisure Wear and Evening Wear, Footwear and more.

I need to dress a man for a 1900 picnic. I turn to Day Wear and have quite a few choices. This allows me to select several that use garments I already have on hand and easily determine what other items would be appropriate--if bow ties are were worn or shoes have pointed toes, etc.

I got this book at the library, then couldn't function without it, so I had to buy it. There might be a book this useful for men's fashion after 1920, but I've never seen anything this helpful for any period before then.

5 out of 5 stars A superb collection and invaluable resource........2000-11-28

This is the most fantastic book of gentlemen's vintage clothing that I have ever read. It is filled from cover to cover with detailed drawings, in both color and B&W, accompanied by a decription with every item shown in this great book.

Example, (the following has a detailed color drawing and reads as follows): Day Wear 1928. British. Single-breasted grey wool overcoat, wide lapels, inset sleeves with split cuffs, button trim, large patch-and-flap pockets, top-stitched edges and detail. Straight-cut trousers with turn-ups. Collar-attached shirt. Striped tie. Trilby hat. Two-tone leather brogues. Leather gloves. Walking Stick. The drawing that accompanies the above description is in color so that you may see the correct colors to be used.

This is a wonderful book and is a must have for any gentlemen interested in vintage clothing. It's a guide for having the clothes remade for your own personal everyday wear or for studying.

2 out of 5 stars Nice picture book.......1999-07-26

I checked this book out at a local book store. It might be a good resource for a costume designer or fashion maven, but contains no "real" information (very little text, no explanations of clothing styles or traditions, etc.).

Book Description

The most comprehensive and detailed history available of women's fashion in the modern era.

From the styles of the early 1900s to those of the twenty-first century, John Peacock charts the development of women's fashion in all its aspects: couture wear, leisure wear, day wear, evening wear, bridal wear, underwear, and accessories. Fashion's greatest designers and designs are all here: from Worth's visiting dress, Chanel's suits, Balenciaga's classic gowns, Dior's New Look, and Mary Quant's mini-dresses to recent designs from the collections of Calvin Klein, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, and others.

Photography could never capture so faithfully the dazzling variety of these designs. Indeed, many that predate the advent of color photography have never been shown in their original colors. John Peacock's wide-ranging research, using paintings, photographs, and the garments themselves, has allowed him to reproduce in meticulous detail lines, shapes, weaves, patterns, and colors. Arranged by decade, the drawings are accompanied by complete descriptions of each garment and accessory, including the fabric, cut, and pattern.

In this revised edition of Peacock's standard book, 155 new drawings have been added, together with detailed descriptions. The updated reference section includes a time chart summarizing the development of fashion, biographies of couturiers and designers, and a bibliography. 1,250+ color illustrations.
